UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

2009 Dogs could be even better

It may seem early to be talking about this but there is a good chance that Georgia could be an even better football team next season.

Think about it. The Bulldogs will be returning their entire starting offensive line (with Trinton Sturdivant back at left tackle) and all the backups up front. A.J. Green and Tavarres King will be seasoned sophomore receivers. Should junior quarterback Matthew Stafford and sophomore tailback Knowshon Moreno come back, that’s a seriously explosive offense. And even if they don’t, with a line like that, Georgia should be just fine with Caleb King and Richard Samuel and incoming freshman Washaun Ealey in the backfield and Joe Cox or Logan Gray or Aaron Murray under center.

Defensively, now you have defensive tackle Jeff Owens coming back for a fifth season to start alongside Geno Atkins (provided be doesn’t bolt for the NFL) with Kade Weston and Brandon Wood and DeAngelo Tyson and Ricardo Crawford providing depth. Rod Battle and Justin Houson man the ends. The Dogs will miss Dannell Ellerbe at middle linebacker but will have seven returnees besides, including Rennie Curran. And you lose only CJ Byrd from the secondary (provided the Asher Allen and/or Reshad Jones don’t skip to the pros).

In all there are 53 freshmen and sophomores on scholarship on the current roster and the Bulldogs just played 20 freshmen in the season opener. So that’s a lot of experience coming back.

Meanwhile, the schedule also gets a little better, though it’s still a very attractive one. The Dogs open at Oklahoma State on Sept. 5, pick up Arkansas for Alabama, play Arizona State at home and have an open date before the Florida game.

The point is, it all adds up to another pretty good team. There is a lot of script still to be written this season but the Dogs ought to be in the championship conversation again next year.

Now, a brief look around the SEC… .

Gustav damages Tiger Stadium

More than likely it will not effect Saturday’s game between Troy and LSU in Baton Rouge but Tiger Stadium incurred some damage from Hurricane Gustav and has officials huddling about how to handle it.

Bama on SI cover

Specifically, tailback Glen Coffee as writer Austin Murphy features “the beatdown in A-Town,” as they’re calling the Tide’s 34-10 win over Clemson. Coach Nick Saban the Bama faithful frothing again. With only Tulane, Western Kentucky and Arkansas between the Tide and their Sept. 27th date at Georgia, it should be an undefeated, highly-ranked and confident bunch that arrives in Athens.

Smelley to start for Gamecocks

Chris Smelley will start under center for South Carolina tomorrow night at Vanderbilt. One’s left to wonder why Smelley, who takes over for an injured Tommy Beecher, wasn’t the starter all along. Columbia State columnist Ron Morris weighs in on coach Steve Spurrier’s seemingly never-ending quarterback controversies.

Harvin heals for Hurricanes

Florida wide receiver/running back Percy Harvin has healed from his heel injury just in time for Saturday’s game against Miami. Things are working out quite nicely for the Gators, who will have a bye week for heading up to Tennessee in Week 4.

Luck dries up for Vols

Nashville Tennessean columnist David Climer figures Tennessee must have used up all its luck last season during its surprising run to the Georgia Dome. All the breaks seemed to go UCLA’s way on Monday night.

Next year will be an easier road with a lot of great players returning but we need to support the team we have this year. I fully expect the D will look as good as or better than it did at the end of last year against CM. They will be more motivated and the rust should be gone. It’s a great time to be a UGA fan. Go Dawgs GATA. Now it’s time for the bugs to show their jealousy.

Chip, It would be nice to see Stafford and Moreno back for next season. Of course that depends on how this years ends. I guess the #1 ranking was a token thrown our way for last season. The voters knew the schedules for everybody and could predict the outcomes of those games. They knew Richt was going to avoid injuries and play some people, plus not embarrass the other team. Can’t believe that Bama shut down Clemson like they did. I knew they would win but 0 yards rushing for one of the supposedly best TB duos in the nation? UT looked like a big ten team speed wise with exception of their DB’s and the one RB. Tebow might get to 200 yards passing this week with Harvin back. Give him the Heisman now and call it good. SC will be in trouble this season if SOS keeps up his QB game. Pick one Steve and develop him into the QB you want.

I’m ahead of you on this one, Chip. Next year does set up nicely. Forget about Stafford and Moreno, though. They going to be making the big $’s and rightfully so. Kinda reminds me of TN’s last NC. Payton goes to the NFL and Tee Martin gets the job done to win it all. Alabama looked mighty inspired as did USC. Lot of drama left in 08 but it’s ours to lose. Stay focused guy and have a lot of fun out there!

I think from now on each year we will be loaded. It’s just a matter of beating Auburn, Tennessee, and Florida in the same year. We have a hard time doing that. You have to bring your A game every week. Our out of conference is still going to be difficult. Ok. St. will be tough out there. Their coach is 40 AND A MAN SO WATCH OUT. Need 5 more blue chippers to fill our class out. We need to focus on the opportunity we have this year first though. GO DAWGS!!!

I think Georgia should win every national title in the next 10 years or so…Call it a 10-Peat…Some smart Dog fan (like Towers) should trademark that slogan now!!!

Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Florida should probably just consider dropping football or trying to get into the ACC or Big East…Why go on?

UGA is doing a great job recruiting this year. As a Georgia fan and a south florida resident, i would love to see them steal some of this speed from down here in s florida. We need a tenacious speed rusher on both ends of the d line and a shut down corner. The offense is set up nice with two top qb commits and three young backs in the stable. The wideouts could be lethal if Bobo would not call such a conservative game. Two of the next three years Georgia will win the national title. Mark it down!!!!

I agree it is way to early into this season for next years predictions. But what makes you think Moreno and Stafford will bolt? I think several will go early but I don’t think it will be either of these two. A quality senior year for either of these two future greats will only increase their stock value in the NFL

ONE game into 2008 and you are already calling the 2009 UGA squad better (potentially).

And so the hype machine has officially started for ‘09.

Pathetic.

This is why UGA fans have massively overinflated egos and it’s also why when/if they fall short of a national championship it hurts twice as much.

Hey chip,

You forgot about getting Marcus Washington back at Middle line backer next year. He will have his 5th year due to haveing a medical redshirt this year. If Geno, Asher and Rashad Jones come back next year the defense will be even more stacked than it is now. Bottom line is that the dawgs will be good for quite awhile. ireally like what CWM has done with the defense. We need a little more conditioning but I think we will be rolling by mid season. We just need to avoid loses until then.

Will you Dawg fans quit emulating your newest hero, UGA VII, licking yourselves as dogs are wont to do (per Lewis Grizzard) and play out this season? You may find the SEC teams on your schedule have voted to make you earn any wins you get on the field.

Can you believe that “THE Ohio State Buckeye” has the guts to post on a blog in SEC territory? I am sure the writers were impressed with the mighty Buckeyes kicking four(4) field goals in the first half against YS. Yes, Beanie Wells was in the game. He didn’t go out until the third quarter. But keeping with the Olympic spirit, the Russian judges, I mean the Midwest sports writers stayed the course and kept OSU in the running. I wonder where THE OSU would finish in the SEC?

The reason that both Stafford and Moreno may enter the draft is the NFL’s bargaining agreement or should I say lack there of. Next year may be the last year that rookies will be able to get the big bucks. After next year there may be a strict cap placed on rookie salaries.

Dogs should be focused on Central Michigan. Although they’re not nearly as balanced, this team runs a spread similar to WV. And we all know how Richt’s team fared against WV last time. Not saying C. Michigan will win, but they certainly feel that they can win, and they will be MUCH more competitive than Ga So. Focus on this week fellas.

GEEZ LOUISE, FOLKS!

I don’t usually respond to a lot vitriol that pervades this blog every day but I’m going to today because most of it is directed at me.

Here’s the deal on today’s topic: I don’t need to wait to see what Georgia is going to do in 2008 to hypothesize about their potential in 2009. All you need to know some facts: Georgia won 11 games last season and finished No. 2 in the BCS rankings; most of the starters are back from that season and the Dogs added some talent to boot; nearly all of the players from this year’s team will be back next year, including a couple of great players that aren’t able to play this season because of injuries.

At least half of the people that come on here and rip everything all the time aren’t Dogs’ fans. In fact, the majority of fans of other teams that come here seem to believe they have some kind of duty to come in and shoot down anything positive — whether it’s factual or not — that is written about Georgia. So you’re never going to accept the basic fact that the Bulldogs are a very good program right now and an excellent team at this place and time.

Don’t think so? Ask the coaches at Florida and Georgia Tech and Tennessee and South Carolina and Alabama and Auburn and Florida State. Those are the programs that primarily go head-to-head with Georgia in recruiting and they know better than anybody what kind of players Mark Richt is attracting to Athens and what the Bulldogs’ place is at present in college football… .

All that said, my only assertion today was that Georgia “should be in the championship discussion again next year.” I’ve never said they were going to win any championships this year or next year. But you’re lying to yourself if you say they weren’t in the discussion last year, aren’t in the discussion this year or won’t be in the discussion next year. You’re being naive or obstinate.

I’ve been covering college football for more than 20 years so I’m not just some zealot mouthing off about my team. This is an objective observation arrived at via the considerations I listed above. That’s where I’m coming from.

And let’s make this clear: This blog is written for Georgia fans who are interested in knowing all the ins and outs about the Dogs. The topics are meant to be of interest to them. But this is an open forum so anybody who wants to participate here may do so. But if you don’t like the topic, tough. Come back tomorrow and maybe you’ll find something more to your liking.

The fact is, I try to sit down very early in the morning every day — SIX AND SEVEN DAYS A WEEK — and think of subjects that might provoke some thoughtful discussion. I apologize if every single one doesn’t meet whatever standard sit is you think it should. Just doing the best I can. And I will continue to.

By Mobile Dawg

September 3, 2008 3:06 PM | Link to this

Let’s talk about CM. What keeps a defense fresh? Watching the offense control the ball. Georgia’s offense is a double edge sword. It’s great we have that quick strike capability but we put the defense right back out on the field. Southern tripled our time of possession Saturday. We need to get back to SEC football to win the SEC and a possible MNC.

Ball control, with our line, backs, and big play threat to occupy the corners and safety’s we should dominate the clock, scoreboard and keep CM’s big play QB off the field. We dominate and win impressively.

That will be the key against Carolina, AS, Bama, LSU, UF, AU, etc. I love the big play but we shouldn’t try and live off of it. Sorry, I forgot UT, an honest oversight, had nothing to do with UCLA game.

Yes, we should be great next year. I want to be great this year first. It was only the first game but we really didn’t look like a dominant #1. To truly dominate teams you need to dominate the clock IMO.

Get ‘em Chipper!!! I like the thoughts of a great 2009…and since recruiting is a 12 month event, I like updates every month, regardless of “in football season” or “out”.

That being said, I believe all Junior’s, including Stafford and Moreno, will be back next year. Not only will be be loaded with talent, we’ll finally have an O-line that has EXPERIENCE! Stable full of Running backs, head-hunting DB’s…..it’s a great time to be a Dawg. Now, if only I could afford season tix!!

September 3, 2008 3:23 PM | Link to this

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the topic, Chip. In fact, I agree with and appreciate the points you made. I’ve been saying the same thing for the last two years.

I also agree with “1 eyed jack”. The NFL’s new agreement will make it interesting for anyone thinking about jumping ship early.

I can’t help but think about our old friend, Buck Cochran… Man, he would have loved seeing all the freshmen play. Buck was able to see that, because of the recruiting/strength of our program, re-load is the word for our future. It is nice to know that in the unfortunate event of an injury to anyone in our backfield there is not so much of a slide in talent for the back-up.

The reason I have believed for the past 2 years that 2009 would be a better year than ‘07, ‘08 is the O-line. 2 years ago, we were in a mess. CMR took some great strides in patching things together with some JUCO moves, recruiting, and hiring Searles that we have progressed nicely… better than I gave us hope for. But for the next several years we should be pretty well set, and it seems that recruiting is unreal, concerning the talent we are bringing in.

If your brain has a problem multi-tasking to the point that you can’t dare look at the future of the UGA program without feeling like you are somehow jinxing or overlooking our current schedule, then God help you and I’m thankful that you are not part of the UGA coaching staff, because you better bet your a$$ that they are considering all things.

Keep going Chip, these people are just hating on UGA right now because of how much national attention the program is getting and wishing their team was in our position instead. The internet brings a sense of anonymity, as does not having to signup to post comments here. If people were banned for making flamebait comments here, most of these people would be gone long ago but they keep on cluttering up these comments with their useless drivel on a daily basis that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Why are we talking about next year. I agree with one of the first bloggers…now is the time!!! We only fell one spot and should have, partially because of letting GSU score 21 points on us at home and because of the way USC took care of VA on the road. However, this was the first game, focus on C. Michigan, take care of business and then we get into the SEC with USC. Today is the day, C. Michigan is coming to town and we need to take care of business. Please…no more talk of 2009.

Chip,

We don’t always agree… but there is nothing wrong with your article. You are not saying that 08 is over, any thoughtful reader understands that you are simply pointing out that UGA “may” be better next year depending on what Stafford and Moreno and any other underclassmen choose to do.

With Jeff Owens rehabbing now, the guy is going to be able to bench press a small village by the time the 09 season starts.

Regardless of what UGA does THIS YEAR (win national title, lose three games, or something in between), the Dawg faithful will be pumped up for next season and you are just offering a glimpse of the schedule and players for next year.

Unless you are the starting tackle for the Dawgs, please explain to me why you and I, as fans, can’t or shouldn’t discuss the future of the UGA program.

It is incredibly laughable to me that some folks beleive that we, as fans, should only focus on our next opponant, as if we had a damn thing to do with the outcome.

Do you think that CMR just starts substituting freshmen into a game like he did Saturday on a whim? You think maybe he has already been thinking about the future, and whether this or that player would better serve the team and program by playing or red-shirting?

We’re just fans, dude… We can talk about the game and what beer you like best…… AT THE SAME TIME! Free yourself from the shackles of believing that we, as fans, need to confine ourselves in conversing about anything but the next game.

What Chip is really trying to say is CMR has UGA in a position to compete for the NC for the next few years! We’re getting to where we reload not rebuild. Hopefully we’ll win it all this year if not we’ll be good enough to knock on the door in the upcoming seasons as well.

I’m not worried about UGA’s offense scoring too fast. I understand that will cause our D to be on the field more, but don’t forget that when you score fast, you also SCORE.

If Georgia had a hapless D, I’d be more concerned about that, but we don’t.

Interesting that Georgia dropping in the polls after week 1 from #1 (despite winning) is the first time that has happened in college football.

No other team has ever been disrepected that way by the media and coaches. That is a sad commentary on the state of college football.

In making all these predictions for this and next year, Georgia Fans seem to forget that Bobo is still calling the plays and Willie is still the DC. If Bobo does not return to his old habit as he did against UT last year and instead apply the same game plan as against Auburn (2nd half)then the offense can be lethal. Willie is often times reluctant to put pressure on the opposing QB so I am not sure what to expect. CMR continues to bring talent to UGA and will continue the trend for years to come. However we can only hope that Bobo and Willie will step up and fully utilize the talents at their disposal. So why the talk about next year instead of the focus on this year.

This atmosphere will never change until the AJC does what it should have done years ago and make people register an online screen name and then keep it password protected.

This would cut out the morons who steal other people’s names and say libelous and ridiculously false things about them.

This will also make people more genial, as they will now be responsible for what they say.

This would help cut out the online stalking and cyber bullying taking place in these forums.

This isn’t an expensive proposition, and as long as the AJC refuses to do what EVERY other sports site out there does, and PROTECT people’s screen names, then we will continue to have this bullsh!t on these boards.

PRACTICE UPDATE

Georgia is going hard today on gameplan. Players are in shells (helmets, shoulder pads and shorts) and going over the scouting report for Central Michigan. Hard to gauge a lot from the short time we get out there with them but they seemed really focused and into it today. The weather is absolutely perfect for football, sunshine and a little heat but a nice, steady breeze to make in manageable.

Some observations …

Disappearing green: If you want to play on Saturday you have to be able to do everything in practice on Wednesday and that means shedding the green jerseys. So there were very few out there today and no new ones that I could tell… .

Encouraging signs for the future included SE Kenneth Harris (ankle) getting around pretty good in green and FB Brannan Southerland (foot) and S Quintin Banks walking and jogging without any noticeable limps are anything. CMR still says Game 6 for those latter two but they’re definitely progressing well. Harris looks like he could probably play but I’m thinking they’ll hold him out for precautionary reasons…

Lots of NFL scouts out at practice today. Not sure why today was different but there were several on the practice fields watching and taking notes… .

Drew Butler apparently is going to handle “sky punts” this season. That’s what the Dogs call “pooch punts.” I didn’t know what and CMR hasn’t mentioned it to the writers but his dad (and my old buddy from Redan High and DeKalb County Parks and Recreation) Kevin Butler just told me that’s the plan. Georgia hasn’t had the opportunity yet so we’ll see this Saturday I guess.

That’s all for now… .

I-dog if the voters had vacated UGA after the WIN, I would agree it was a disrespect issue. But 20 out of the original 23 voters still voted UGA number one. Losing 3 votes after a win isn’t that unusual. OSU, OKL, FL all lost #1 votes while winning big.

It seem like everyone feels like this was some collective movement to decide UGA needed to drop down. It’s really a case of individual voters and USC just consolidated more of them this week.

Remember this quote: “I would think its a blessing really”. Coach is known for his prophetic statements.

Cola Dawg

The latest I heard was he came in overweight and out of shape and the Coaches kept their word about letting play on the DL but he has been too slow and looks like he will be redshirted. Of course this could all change with more injuries on the defensive line and/or he really gets in shape and impresses Coach Garner and Fabris.

As for Southern Cal and OSU in 2 weeks, this will be a very close game and I was leaning toward USC winning but now IMHO I think OSU will win. Virginia was not a good measuring stick for USC, lost too many players to graduation and the NFL. SC has 4 new starters on the OL, a new QB and 5 other new starters on offense and at some point all this inexperience will show up and cost them a game or two. OSU on the other hand has 20 starters back from last years team and because USC blew out Virginia the Buckeyes know they have to bring their A game or they will lose. Also it is not a bowl game. OSU has lost so many bowl games it is now in their minds that they can’t win so they then lose. It will be interesting to see what happens as this year unfolds.

The real issue here is whether Stafford stays or goes. If Knowshon goes, there are some very talented guys to give it a go. Stafford, however is a rare talent, the kind NFL offenses need. He can throw every type of pass they need. His stats are only a part of the story. Scouts know that he is the real deal. He reminds me of Dan Marino in his Pittsburg days… he was not the stat leader, but man did he have the arm. Stafford’s decision hinges on how things go this year. If the team does not go to the SEC championship game, then it is very possible he is back. He does seem to like being a college student, but if someone is waving a signing bonus like Matt Ryan got this year, you can bet he will jump. In that case, Georgia will be good, but they will not be in the same league as USC or Oklahoma. This is the year. This is the moment to seize.

As for the fans of other teams on this blog….. the simple fact that they’re even on this blog is proof that they’re envious and jealous of the GA’s football program. Their appearances on here speak volumes on how they perceive GA. For instance, you think I would ever venture onto a Tenn or South Carolina blog page? This is so comical….already talking about next season after the dawgs let a high school team score 21 points on them. You folks who claim that Richt called the dawgs off after a 38 - 0 lead needs to watch the game again . A lot of 1 st stringers were still playing on defense when GSU scored 21 points. Plus GSU had a TD that was a terrible spot on the 1 yard line, then Ellerbe got a gift of an interception. Heck my grandma could have intercepted that ball. The Dawgs wait and see defense will get killed by Carolina, Florida, Alabama,LSU and ASU. This year is just another year of Fools Gold and so will next year. O V E R R A T E D

Hey Fools Gold, you just proved my point. BTW, who is your team? Also, most of the 1st string WAS out of the game when GSU scored their 21 points. Most of our secondary, linebackers, and D lineman were out of there. Sure there were a couple still in there, but you can’t take all of them out at the same time. If you knew anything about football, then you would understand that. Anyway, who cares if GSU scored 21? Moreno had only 8 carries with 3 TD’s, and Stafford was pulled in the 3rd quarter. If he and Moreno had played the whole game, they would have easily scored in the 60’s.

Did anyone really watch the game. The defense did not look good at all. The first string let Ga Southern drive all the way down the field. If it was not for a bad throw they would have scored. Caleb looked like he was a half step slow to me, maybe he can turn it up in the next game. O-line did not look as good as they should. They really did not knock any one off the line. We have a long way to go before we can claim a Nat champ. That being said I know Mark will get the team to where they need to be, but at what point of the year? Lets take it one game at a time. Go dogs!!!!

Salutations Chip. Look at this picture realistically. USC plays perhaps two or three quality teams at most. They go undefeated. BFD! Ohio State plays one game per season. They win it to reach the title game. BFD! The two untested teams collide with each other. Winner truly a paper champion. An SEC team with two or more defeats which has to face merciless competition every week (more or less) hardened to make mincemeat of either of them. Hell, bring them on back-to-back. It does not matter! That is why Ohio State leads the universe in every statistical category until a REAL team comes along. OSU is not strong enough to be a second tier SEC squad. I would love to see how USC would emerge after a three-bout gauntlet with Georgia, Florida and LSU. Not 3-0, I can certainly assure all! Any solution? Only a playoff which tyrannical powers-that-be violently oppose. It would knock OSU and their ilk completely OUT of national title picture. That is why all bowl bouts should be South versus north. Which way would pendulum swing? Think about it. Most Southern teams have pride. Except, apparently, that (cat)whipped bunch of chokers in Tennessee.

Hey BuLLdawg- I’m not too impressed with the anti-Fulmer notes. He is Tenn’s cross to bear and not ours.

END Oledawg QUOTE

Here is what I wrote :

PAC-10 has 1 of the BCS Top 13, while The SEC has its Four (4) in the Top 10. The SEC won 10 games Week 1 and the PAC-10 won only 7, although the only Conference The SEC had a losing record against is the PAC-10 (so far to-date.)

UCLA did not make it into the Top 25 of the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, beating an also ran in The SEC, who for example has not been ranked ahead of UGA in the AP Poll for 7 Consecutive Seasons Straight, and counting.

Tennessee is generally considered today to be in the 2nd bottom half of The SEC again.

No SEC Championship since 1998 for Fulmer. No BCS game since 1999 for Fulmer. Not been ranked in the Top 10 since 2001, Phillip Fulmer has not done anywhere near as well as Coach Richt.

Despite 4 first half interceptions by PAC-10 UCLA 3rd string QB, the vols did nothing on Offense. While it appeared that the vols had a great OL, in fact, they do not. The vols’ Defense was even worse, if that is possible. When UCLA’s Defense was tired, the vols’ was even more tired and out of condition as the game wore on. Special Teams for the vols’ were not special at all. With the suspension of the Punter Britton Colquitt for the first five (5) games for multiple arrests and the pitiful kicking by Daniel Lincoln who missed 4 of 5 field goal attempts all of which Blair Walsh would have made, the vols lost the game on Special Teams and on Defense when the vols simply could not stop UCLA’s 3rd string QB.

Tennessee dropped out of the Top 25 of every single Poll. There are, however, still 6 SEC teams in the Top 25 as South Carolina moved into both the AP Poll and USA Today Coaches’ Poll at Number 24.

Phillip Fulmer, when they zoomed in on him last night, looks very old. Elderly, getting on in years, and having a sorry coached football team, does not look good to recruits. I will not be the only person with this observation. It is what I saw.

These are the facts, not smack Oledawg. Sorry you cannot tell the difference.

Hey Palmetto Dawg…… Fools Gold has a point. My Grandmother ,God rest her soul, could have scored 45 points on GSU. Yeah there were both 1st,2nd and 3rd stringers playing in the 3rd and 4th but those guys, you would think, shouldn’t allow a high school band aid team score 21 points against them. Now the pundits have put UGA at # 2. Why was the team not in good condition with all the cramps and injuries mounting. If you dont think the pundits don’t take these into account in assessing and ranking teams then you are looking through rose colored glasses and fooling yourself. Is this because these recruits may just be bust and the 2009 recruiting class could also be bust. Dawgs could use that excuse. Dawgs need to play hard every in game and do it with style,if they don’t, then dawg nation will be heart broken and will get NO RESPECT. BTW Palmetto Dawg you must be a Gamechicken in disguise!

Hey Chip, no need to apologize. Don’t listen to all the haters!!! Helloooooooo people..and recruits too, UGA is currently, and will going to continue to be in the Natl. Title hunt for the next few years. Face it. We have our work cut out for us this year and the injuries have hurt but hopefully some kids will look at this as an opportunity and step up. Yes, we have a brutal schedule and we’re probably not going to go undefeated, but if we can somehow end up with 1 or fewer losses we should end up ranked in the top 2 and at least have a shot at it!!! Good point about many staying with their original vote, but the fact still remains this is the FIRST time a team ranked #1 pre-season has ever lost that ranking after a win in week 1. It is historic.

Factor in that said team as up 38-0 and one has to scratch their head and wonder why we have a lousy system not befitting the greatness of college football.

I-DOG I agree. But try not to let it bother you too much. If we go out and win week after week, people (voters) will take notice. We have to earn it. USC has been to the 2000s what FSU was to the 90s. Like it or not, they are riding on what they have done in the past. Not to mention they look like a pretty darn good team. I wanted them last year. You Dawgs fans don’t want to understand while scratching your heads and wonder why the mutts dropped. You were not all that impressive against a team with 9 to 10 suspended players and playing a lot of freshman players. Ugas 1st string defense allowed GSU to drive to the 1 yard line. Silly penalties , cramping and injuries are mounting. Yes its historic when the # 1 team doesn’t win impressively against a high school team. USC pounded Virginia like they were supposed to do and look impressive in doing so. They were simply men against boys and UGA should have looked and done the same but didn’t. UGa is going to be in trouble when they play Spurrier in a couple of weeks and that 20 pound over weight Ford Festiva is gonna cause some problems for that vanilla offense.. …. I - Dog….That 38 - 0 ain’t good enough through the pundits looking glass. That should have been the score at half time. Take off the rose colored glasses and demand your team to do better! 45 - 21 puh lease!!!!!!!! 67 - 3 should have been the score. Its football not powder puff.

Rx Dawg….. UGA doesn’t want any part of the real USC. They will embarrass Uga just like they did to Arkansas a few years ago. Uga aint there yet. If one cannot think forward about what will happen in a year from now, in business, your business will fold. I make projections on what will happen six months from now, one year from now, two years from now. That is why my business is sucessful and I am just an employee.

There is nothing wrong in taking that same attitude and applying it to a college football team. Case in point. Bama. They will be better this year than most thought six months ago. Saint Nick will have an even better team next year. If these coaches did not look toward the future while playing in the present, then they would wind up being Coach Goff, a great player, great recruiter under Dooley, but a lousy head coach. Key in the music, That’s just the way it is.
