UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

OL Little struggling for Dogs

It’s early yet but it would appear that Florida State got the best end of the bargain when offensive linemen Chris Little and Antwane Greenlee switched their commitments and signed with Georgia and Florida State, respectively, on national signing day in 2007.

Little had committed to Notre Dame but flipped on the Irish and signed with the Bulldogs on the morning of Feb. 8, 2007. Earlier that day, Greenlee, who had committed to Georgia in August of the previous year, shocked the Bulldogs’ coaches when he put on a Seminoles’ hat and signed a LOI with them at 8:35 a.m. that morning.

Little’s signing went a long way toward easing the outrage of Georgia fans that day, and Georgia coaches as well. But as it stands today, it would appear FSU got the better end of that deal.

Greenlee (6-6, 301), now a redshirt freshman with the Seminoles, is slated to start at right tackle this season. Like Little, he was redshirted as a true freshman (Greenlee suffered a cervical sprain and had to sit out) but has apparently really come on this summer.

Little (6-6, 330) hasn’t been anywhere close to seeing the playing field. Last year he showed up overweight and with a broken wrist. He missed all of spring practice with a stress-fracture in his foot, which required surgery this past March. He showed up overweight for preseason camp again this year (350 or 360) and then, last week, hurt the same foot again. He underwent surgery again and is apparently out for the year.

Just goes to show once again that you never know how a recruit may turn out. Both these guys earned four stars from both Rivals and Scout and, including ESPN’s ratings, had average national ranks of 12.6 (Little) and 16.3 (Greenlee).

And maybe Little will come around eventually. Once he gets his foot taken care of and gets his weight down, he could end up being all-conference or All-America. Who knows? But it’s not looking too good so far.

For diehard Dogs

For those of you that claim to bleed red and black, here’s a YouTube video called “Tradition Never Graduates” that’ll probably fire you up for the coming season.

NYT loves UGA

The New York Times is certainly showing Georgia a lot of love. After running a piece on Knowshon Moreno last week, the newspaper has come back with a story by Atlanta writer Ray Glier on how the Dogs are dealing with the hype and expectations of being a consensus preseason No. 1.

Calling Scott Howard

Here’s a Q&A with Georgia part-time play-by-play man Scott Howard in something called the Georgia Sports Blog. I actually talked to Scott for a while yesterday and was going to include a note in this evening’s notes but you’ll get a little more here.

REMEMBER PRACTICE UPDATES BELOW LATER TODAY.

Chip, it would be GREAT if you and/or Tim could provide some fan-friendly “If You Go” game-day information for each game on the Thursday or Friday before the game. For example, PLEASE find a way to post what time the Dawg Walk will be for the Home games (is CMR going to be in the first DW as usual?). Also, it might be helpful to post such things as Book Store hours for folks that don’t often attend Home games. For away games, maybe you could post things like recommended places to eat in other cities. I saw this a while back for the Arizona State Game, and I saved the information for when we make the trip in September. Thanks, and Go Dawgs - GATTA!

Michael S - I know you were asking for info in a broader sense, but for this Saturday, the Dawg Walk is at 10:45. Ceremony for UGA VI is in the stadium at 12:15, and intro of UGA VII is at 12:19 (if you want to be exact!!). I saw this all on georgiadogs.com this morning.

Hope this helps.

I’m going way off topic and my next post will be a long one. FL’s D was terrible last year. Everyone agrees on that. How could that be with so many top rated recruiting classes? I did a little research and it looks like they have neglected the D for star skill position players in recruiting (this part we all knew), but what else is causing a team with so many highly recruited athletes to be so poor on D.

When they have signed 4 or 5 star defensive players, many have either washed out, been injured, or been moved to offense.

I’ll fill in the info on those signees in my next post.

By Cliff

August 27, 2008 1:57 PM | Link to this

I-dog,

Part of Florida’s problems on defense this year is that, despite being poor last year, they had 2 guys leave early for the NFL that were drafted, one high. Compared to Georgia’s draft results, they lost more talent, by far. Also, Gators have lost slightly more important players and more of them so far this fall to injury off of that defense.

By I-DOG

August 27, 2008 2:18 PM | Link to this

Gator Defensive Woes:

In the 04 class, there are no 4 or 5 star defensive players still on the roster. These would have been players redshirted and playing their senior year.

In the 05 class, Reggie Nelson was a 5 star, not on the roster.

Jon Demps was a 4 star, not on roster

Avery Atkins, 5 star, not on roster

Dorian Monroe, 4 star, RS Junior

Ryan Stamper, 4 star, RS Junior

Kalvin Baker, 4 star, not on roster

06 class

AJ Jones, 4 start, Rs Soph

Brandon Spikes 5 star, Junior

Jermaine Cunningham, 4 star, Junior

Cory Hobbs, 4 star, RS Soph

Dustin Doe, 4 star, Junior

Brandon Antwine, 4 star, Rs Soph

Jaques Richardson, 4 star, RS Soph

Bryan Thomas, 4 star, RS Soph

07 class

Jeremy Finch, 4 star, not on roster

Brandon Hicks, 4 star, not on roster

John Brown, 5 star, Rs Freshman

Major wight 5 star, Soph

Carlos Dunlap, 5 star, Soph

Major Trattou, 5 star, Soph

Lorenzo Edwards, 5 star, Soph

Duke Lemmens, 4 star, not on roster

Torry Davis, 5 star, Soph

Ahmad Black, 4 star, Soph

It seems that this is a team that’s best players are from the 06 and 07 class defensively and that if the coaches develop them, Florida will be formidable beginning next year on D.

Chip: I’m usually a big defender of yours on this blog, but I gotta say that today’s topic is a pretty cheap shot on your part. Yes, the kid is “struggling.” Yes, showing up overweight two straight years for fall practice shows a distinct need for better self-discipline. BUT - - with three days before the season starts and with a ton of possible subjects to explore - - did you really need to write a rip job on a fourth-string guard who just found out he will miss the season due to injury? Especially a young kid still suffering from the tragic and unexpected death of his mother just a few months ago?

Shame on you.

Hope you learn to exercise better judgment in your reportage from here out. You’ll excuse me if I head over to “something called the Georgia Sports Blog” for more accurate and better Dawg news.

Cliff,

I agree, it reminds me of our situation a few years ago with the OL at Georgia where Donnan didn’t recruit any offensive linemen one year (or none made it in) and then we had some career ending injuries in the next class from what I remember… to make up for that, we had to get some serious number of OL for a class or two and then the same situation sort of repeated 4 or 5 years later when we had a large group of senior OL’s leaving.

Has anyone else noticed the fact that there are no ridiculous and ignorant comments (purely negative) from GT fans on this UGA blog. Just something I realized as I read the comments. It would be great if the same were true on the various GT blogs.

Every year I sincerely root for UGA to win all of their games and then lose to GT of course! I don’t like our chances this year, but we are only a couple of seasons away from having a solid consistent football program at GT.

I really want GT to beat UGA every year; however, if we cannot manage a victory this November…….I would like to see UGA win the National Championship. I wonder how many UGA fans felt the same way in 1990????

Good luck to both teams and let’s get to the games; I am ready to watch some college football!

Chip,

So I guess you bought Damon Evans’ line of crap (put into his mouth by his puppet master, Michael Adams) about why Georgia does not allow all students who want tickets to be able to get tickets?

Is that why you refuse to shed more light on this greedy practice?

Chip, you grow some cajones anytime soon, how about you ask Adams and Evans why a school with a much larger student body and a much smaller stadium can seem to give all their students the opportunity to get tickets (yes, I’m talking about Florida, which, weirdly enough, enjoys the best home-field advantage in the SEC… strange how that works out) and STILL have an athletic department which makes plenty of money, yet Adams and Evans can’t seem to be moved to allow our smaller student body have more seats in a larger stadium.

When you grow some, Chip, how ‘bout you ask them the tough questions about how these two guys, who are supposed to be serving the best interests of the student body, instead screw over their student body.

And to Altamaha, the hypocrite, yes, take the seats from the alums.

WE’RE THE ONES WHO ACTUALLY GO TO THIS SCHOOL!!!

We sit in classes with the STUDENT ATHLETES.

We know them. We also cheer louder and are far more passionate than any 10 alumni.

When it comes to all college sports, the students should come first.

Sanford Stadium is mausolium on Saturdays compared to The Swamp, because of this self-serving and greedy action by Adams and Evans.

Again, Florida, with a larger student body and smaller stadium is still able to make PLENTY of money and still give every student the opportunity to get football tickets.

You alums had your chance, yet now that you’re graduated, you all turn into a bunch of hypocrites, led by Altamaha Dog.

Just because alums can afford to pay more money doesn’t give them a “right” to tickets.

The only people, besides the player’s families, who have a right to tickets, are the damn STUDENTS!!!

But that Fascist on the North Campus sees fit to play his greedy games and trample all over the rights of the students, paying us no heed at all as he continues to trample us under his heel to “better” our university.

The day Michael Adams leaves, or is deposed, is the day he will truly better our university.

PRACTICE UPDATE

OK folks, back in from practice. We didn’t get to see much today as they allowed us to watch only “flex” and periods A and B, which are special teams. But I was able to learn a little.

Some observations:

Blair Walsh was handling kickoffs. CMR had already said the true freshman from Fort Lauderdale was going to handle placement kicks but he was kicking off the the first team on WEdnesday, too. He really puts his leg into it, lifting his small frame well off the ground… .

Kade Weston is probably out. CMR hasn’t said that yet but he wasn’t practicing today (in green) and that’s usually a good sign he won’t play Saturday. CMR apparently told the Athens Touchdown Club that last night… .

Flanker Mohamed Massaquoi was riding a stationary bike but was not in green. Not sure what that means but probably not much… .

We all know the starting O-line now but it was interesting to see what the No. 2 looks like. It appears that unit is LT Vince Vance, LG Chris Davis, C Ben Jones, RG Cordy Glenn and RT Justin Anderson. That’s the way it looked when I saw it. Don’t know why Glenn was both first and second string. Tanner Strickland was out there in a red jersey but I didn’t see him take any snaps. We’ll see I guess… .

That’s all for now. I’ll let you know more post-practice.

Bob

As a UGA alum and a season ticket holder, I hear you loud and clear, actually I hear yall loud and clear since I sit in Sec 117 near the band and student section. I think it would be great if all students were allowed into each and every UGA home game. I agree that there are many alumni that are not as jubilent as the students at games (to put it mildly), but I definitely yell as loud as I can at each and every game. Unfortunately, the athletic department makes more money off of alumni than students, when it comes to football tickets. I’m not saying that I agree with the process or think that it’s the right thing, but it is what it is. I’ve seen quite a few students trying to sell their tickets with no intentions of going to the games, when there are many students that couldn’t even get tickets. I hope that Damon Evans will hear all of this talk and give us a better explanation than I’ve heard in the past. Go Dawgs!

Chip,

Have you ever been able to corral coach Van Halanger to see what he thinks about this year’s team? Last year, he said we would be special because of how the players cared about each other. Any other “predictions” of the like from him? How is he feeling about our chances to have another special season?

Also, with regard to Glenn playing Right Guard with the second team, it’s probably because that’s where he’ll be when Boling returns from suspension. We’ll see if I’m right when next week’s game comes around!!

Bob, tell me how I am the hypocrite? I don’t carry season tickets anymore, and I would personally prefer more students in the stadium, so where is my agenda? I gave them my seat because I didn’t go enough and decided somebody else should get them. And I graduated long enough to go that my contribution level wasnt that high to just stay in. I have also given away tickets on the bridge before. Don’t even try to be taking any moral high ground with me, You are looking at my beltbuckle on this one.

What you dont seem to get, and refuse to admit is that you are NOT taking the tickets from the rich fat guy across the way. You are taking it away from your pals that just graduated a few month ago. Just a hunch that somehow, that idea will sound less appealing to you pretty soon.

BY the way dead wrong about UF.

I saw the century of tradition and frankly I wasn’t impressed at all. If you watched it you wouldn’t think we had any tradition at all. We have won a national title but it only shows a couple of clips about Herschel and the 1980 dawgs. It doesn’t mention that we have won it once. And it doesn’t mention that we’ve won the sec several times. 6 under Dooley and 2 under richt. You wouldn’t know any of these things just watching the video.

By Bob Sacamano

August 27, 2008 5:54 PM | Link to this

Marietta,

Adams and Evans CREATED this ticket black market.

Because only students can use student tickets. You need to produce your ID to use them.

Again, I mention the fact that Florida makes PLENTY of money and are in the black EVERY year, yet they, with a SMALLER stadium and a LARGER student body somehow manage to let all the students who want tickets, get tickets.

Funny how they can do that, but we can’t.

Again, Evans just keeps on repeating the crap his Puppet Master feeds him, and no one is telling the truth or doing what’s right and in the best interests of the STUDENTS.

The Fascist up on North Campus couldn’t care less about doing what’s in the best interests of the students.

If it isn’t his ridiculous, unilateral changes like the plus / minus grading system, it’s screwing his students out of football tickets which rightfully belong to us.

He’s a dictator and he must be stopped. This has gone WAY beyond Dooley.

Way beyond!

POST PRACTICE UPDATE

All right, here’s what I found out:

Kade Weston is out. As it turns out, the big defensive tackle has a sprained medial collateral ligament. It was first thought to just be a bruised knee. Weston said he’s not sure he’ll be back. “The trainers here know what’s best for me so I’m leaving it up to them.” …

Coach Jon Fabris insists he still does not know who will return punts for him. “I’ve not settled on anybody, which is not good,” he said. Fabris swears he still has 12 different guys catching punts every day at practice. He quipped that he hopes to have it down to a half-dozen by pregame warmups Saturday and then he’ll make a decision… . He did let me know that he’s not a big fan of having cornerbacks do it because they’re already winded from playing defense and often they’re the best guys at covering the opposing team’s gunners… . He pointed out that he lost 99 career returns in Mikey Henderson and Thomas Flowers, two of the best Georgia has ever had… .

Fabris also wouldn’t reveal his D-end rotation. Most of his guys missed most of camp. But Jarius Wynn and Jeremy Lomax are good bets… .

CMR can’t wait to meet the new Uga. “I have not met him,” he said. “It’d be hurtful if I didn’t get a chance to before he’s introduced.” He was kidding… .

Uga VII will be introduced at 12:19 p.m., or 15 minutes before kickoff and right after a video tribute to the late Uga VI… .

To correct a few errors on your part about Georgia’s football history:

  1. 11th winningest program of all time
  2. Two Consensus National Championships- 1942 and 1980 and named # 1 in at least one poll- 3 other times- 1927, 1946* and 1968. Played for two other MNC in the 1977 Sugar Bowl- lost to #1 Pittsburg and 1983 lost to # 2 Penn St.
  3. 12 SEC Championships- 1942, 1946, 1948, 1959, 1966, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 2002 and 2005
  4. Two Southern Conference Championships 1921 and 1927

  5. 1946- 11-0 only unbeaten, untied team as Norte Dame and Army had tied and did not go to a bowl game.

Chip, thanks.

I’m wondering if there is a general trend up in injuries across college football. One reason might be much bigger people, while ligaments may be the same as they were long ago; putting too much strain on a joint, and making collisions more disastrous. Force equals mass time acceleration (or deceleration).

Look, Altamha, Tybee, and Bob. First I know i’m a “kid” but I have the right to see the dawgs play because my parents are die hard alumni who have been going to games for 38 years. Also, I don’t take a student ticket because my voice is lost EVERY game even the push overs (basically I am part of the game, I don’t go to “enjoy” it). Bob, you are right, Adams is a power hungary jerk, and I PROMISE if I get into UGA I will protest on his front lawn even if its just me! But tickets are no tickets, we are the DAWG NATION we shouldn’t be fighting each other. We agree more student tickets, we should MAN up and quit attacking each other and rep the Dawgs. Bob, uf doesn’t give all their students tickets, but they get more than uga and all in one section. Next year if I get into uga, holla at me and we can protest against ADUMBS together! Interior line is second to none… . O-line is a different story. It’s the bugaboo of this team, IMHO. Not good to have that many newbies facing a sked like Georgia is. But it’s a high-pedigree bunch so maybe they’ll grow up fast.

Thanks for the updates Chip. I always enjoy your work and was very interested in Greenlee’s progress. I hope Chris will come around for us, and Greenlee must have some regrets for not coming to UGA by now and being pirched at the top in the national spotlight. Unless I have him confused w/some other decommitment, his reason for backing out was he couldn’t stand the thoughts of participating in mat drills. Sometimes it just doesn’t pay to be a lazy-@$$!

Yes, I watched College Football Live. I noticed how May and Holtz can rattle off the names of LSU and Florida players like they had memorized the media guide. Yet, when it comes to Georgia, all they knew was Stafford and Moreno. Stafford and Moreno this and Stafford and Moreno that. I’d be willing to bet they didn’t even know who Sturdivant was until he got hurt. That probably goes for most of the media in fact. Kind of ironic considering the great weight they are placing on his injury. Please take whatever these clowns say about Georgia football with a grain of salt, whether it be good or bad. They obviously know very little about the program. I think that is changing but slowly. UGA still doesn’t get the attention that LSU and Florida get and it shows every time these morons open their mouths.

Good to hear an update on Little. Hope he is able to come around for the Dawgs. From the FSU reports I read, Greenlee is doing well and is happy about possibly starting for the Noles. At the very least, he will get in a lot of snaps this year. Btw, no way Greenlee is lazy with an oline coach like Trickett!

That’s right Greenlee was, is, and will be the best of the 2. He had an unfortunate injury last season and chances of him ever playing football again looked dim at one point. The young man was able to recover and is now making progress on the field. Over the next 3 seasons you will hear his name often. Allright Homers, get back to plowing. Them fields are looking bare…

Paddy,

Zebrie and Greenlee are fighting for the same spot, Right Tackle. So either Greenlee the RS Freshman or Sanders the trues Freshman will start at RT.

And for the poster stating that Greenlee “backed out” of UGA because of mat drills. That is laughable. Trickett our OL coach is the best in the business and is a true hard a*. UGA couldn’t offer him what FSU could - Immediate playing time - which he would have had if he didnt have the neck injury last year.

In all fairness, Holtz did make a point to say that along with USC and OSU, Oklahoma and Georgia were right there in term of teams of this decade. Holtz has said a handfull of good things about Richt lately as well.

FSU’s offensive line coach is probably the best evaluator of OL talent in college football.

Actually, there’s a pretty reliable test for knowing whether a HS lineman will pan out — is he overweight in HS? Chances are he will be in college. Little committed to FSU’s old staff before new OL coach Rick Trickett called him and told him not to come. Trickett’s analysis was that he would be overweight and too slow throughout his college career. Looks like he was right, at least so far. The recruiting services, on the other hand, get enamored with the big guys and substantially overrate them. Little still has a chance to exercise discipline and get his weight under control, but until he does, he’ll continue to have injury problems and remain a non-contributor.
