UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Southerland a flawed NFL prospect?

Don’t know if you’ve had a chance to check out the newly formatted daily online paper the Sporting News is producing but it’s definitely worth a glimpse if you get a chance. Our former college editor Jeff D’Alessio is running the show over there now and it really is a neat concept.

That said, I’m not sure I’ve ever read more horse-patooie than I did when I perused Russ Lande’s draft projection on Georgia fullback Brannan Southerland. Lande projects Southerland as a fifth-round pick and I have no qualms with that. That’s probably a reasonable slot for a fullback as far as I know but I have never been able to figure out what in the world NFL scouts are thinking and I’m not going to try now.

What I disagree with is most of what Lande writes under “weaknesses” for Southerland. This is a subscription deal so I don’t know if y’all will able to follow the link so here’s what Lande wrote under that heading:

Weaknesses: Is not a premier athlete. Struggles to bend knees for low lead blocks, limiting movement. Tends to stop moving his feet after initial blow and will fall off the block. Shows stiff hip movements, struggling to block moving targets in the open field. Is not a strong and powerful runner inside - gets tripped up by low arm tackles.”

I have to assume this guy Lande has seen Southerland play in person or at least on video because how else could he possibly write authoritatively on this subject if he didn’t spend time doing that. But “struggles to bend knees for low lead blocks, limiting movement? and “shows stiff hip movements?” Are you joking?

Tell that to Auburn linebacker Tray Blackmon as he’s knocked out of the play on this long run by Thomas Brown. Perhaps Lande should consult the two Yellow Jackets taken out by Southerland on this TD run last fall.

And maybe Southerland is not the greatest runner in the world but Georgia doesn’t ask him to do it much other than around the goal line. That’s where most of his 21 career TDs have come from, five of them on receptions. Last time I checked NFL teams are drafting tailbacks to do the running and fullbacks to do the blocking.

These draft “experts” crack me up with their references to “hip movements” and “knee bend.” It’s like they all go to Mel Kiper Jargon School to learn how to verbalize the tiny flaws only they can see. Never mind that Southerland is a little over 6-feet tall, weighs 248 pounds, runs a 4.6 40-yard dash and is the third-strongest player on Georgia’s team, linemen included. Never mind that he’s a model student. Never mind that he’s the consummate football player.

NFL GMs be warned: Southerland has stiff hips!

I hate to do this but… I had him as a day one talent a few months ago. Last week, I had him in the 6th round, but I could see him going anywhere from the 4th round to the 7th. I really do like this unproven D-II player out of Multidirectional State Technical College. He is unpolished but had a fantastic combine.

There are plenty of NFL teams that would kill to have a runner that can move the pile, take on big linebackers, and catch the ball out of the backfield, which he does surprisingly well. There are plenty football players that had flaws, Jerry Rice anyone?, who are in the HOF. And plenty of combine stars who never see the field.

The “G” stands for Georgia, you big dummy!

Who cares what these “experts” think. UGA produced a fullback by the name of Mack Strong. He was undrafted and signed as a free agent. I guess he wasn’t any good as he lasted a “mere” 15 years in the NFL.

CHIP

Please give us the scoop on how the TE’s are looking. With Sutherland out the first few weeks, Chapas being the only scholarship fullback available and a retooled OL: I see our scheme and TE’s playing a huge roll in how well we will be able to both run and pass block. Figgins looks like Ben Watson in uniform to me. How much will he be used to “disguise” the inexperience of the young OL earl in the season. I’m expecting to see a heavy dose of two TE’s up through the bye week.

Thanks!

That guy’s full of $hit. It’s a safe bet to say he’s a fraud as he’s obviously never even seen Southerland play a down.

Unless of course there’s another fullback out there with a strikingly similar name. Maybe he’s confused with a Brendan Sootherlon playing at UTEP or something.

Although I like him, I do agree with some of the article. If you watch some of the short yrd runs..he does get cut down at the legs and falls over for the yrd. Look at the FLA game if Moreno hadn’t pushed on a crucial 1-2 yrd first down, we would have missed it…He is strong but being strong isn’t a ticket. He does need to run better and block a lil lower. Look at the link above on TB run and he more or less “picked ” him

The Sporting News became irrelivant many years ago. Their time is long since gone. Took their Mag. since HS but have not picked one up in 23 years. Even then as a youngster I knew that what they tried to sell was either old news or not correct. I can’t believe they are still in business. Southerland in the 5th or 6th is about right. Then he plays about 8 to 10 in the NFL, makes a couple Pro Bowls. Another good call by TSN.

I had posted that Southerland would be a first round pick without taking into account that fullbacks are never drafted that high. Still, it seems strange that he would not be taken in the second round…

Chip, I agree with you, all he does is destroy linebackers, DE’s, and safeties… I understand he is not “athletic enough to play cornerback or QB, but the teams that pass over him in the draft are going to wish they had him.

Chip,

I make no excuses for Jeff’s column - he’s wrong. But I wonder if he’s evaluating Southerland as a ball carrying fullback instead of a blocking back.

Despite the details he goes into we all know - as do NFL scouts, Southerland’s blocking skills (just ask the other backs). When Bobo let Southerland carry the ball it was typically a short gain.

While we’d all like to see him carry the ball for 20 - 30 yds he’s a blocking back who’ll do well in the NFL if healthy.

My best wishes to him for a speedy recovery (you’ll recall I predicted he’d be back by midseason or sooner) to help THE DAWGS through their formidable schedule.

He reminds me of that Falcons fullback who got the concussion and had to retire……an absolute monster! He’ll be fine and the O-line will be fine…..so much depth. You know good and well he is one of the best blitz blockers on this offense.

POST-PRACTICE UPDATE

Sorry there wasn’t a mid-practice update but we couldn’t watch anything but warmups and there was nothing to report from that. Here are the few things there were to report:

There was an injury and it appears serious: Redshirt freshman linebacker Charles White went down with an apparent Achilles tendon injury very early in the practice game. Richt couldn’t say how bad or how long he’d be out but White did not return. He’s currently third-team middle linebacker and is on a lot of special teams… .

The scrimmage was closed but Richt spouted off a bunch of stats for us afterward. They’re kind of meaningless in the context of the practice game — namely, no actual tackling — but FWIW here are some:

Passing: QB Matthew Stafford: 4-for-5, 70 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs; Joe Cox AND Logan Gray (they both wore #14 and sports info couldn’t tell who was who), 9-of-13, 216 yards, 2 TDs;

Receivers: Demiko Goodman 3-89, 1 TD, Kris Durham 3-57, Tavares King 1-57, 1 TD;

Rushing: Dontavius Jackson 11-51, Richard Samuel 3-10, Carlton Thomas 4-20, Knowshon Moreno 0-0.

Richt declared Georgia Southern the winner because he ordered the No. 1 offense to drive the length of the field in the final two minutes for a game-winning score. Blair Walsh missed a 45-yard field goal attempt… .

CMR speaking to Athens Touchdown Club’s on Tuesday night at 7 Athens Country Club. If you’re interested call 706-543-9860.

That’s all for now. Full notebook should be on the UGA page shortly. Good night.

By the nature of the position, Fullbacks block first, run second. Find a Fullback that blocks well, runs stong, can catch and has a dose of speed, he’ll find a home in the pros…A fellow named William Andrews comes to mind as he was used primarily as a blocking back for some horse ( I forget the name ) at Auburn. Andrews career in the pros was shortened due to injury but long enough to be an All-Pro running back for the Falcons…

Just ignore “the” Ohio State fan. I’m guilty of taking the bait from some of the crazy posters, but when a guy asks what cow collge Bear Bryant coached for… we have to draw the line.

Lets see what ignoring him does.

I just have to do this…THE OSB’s RE : Your immediate withdrawal and surrender from Dixie— Ask your friends back in Ohio what brand of Chesterfields the Bear smoked. You’ll stump ‘em every time…

…and this from the archives : After Woody smacked the Tiger, he hunkered down in his hovel back home in Ohio. If memory serves correctly, it was an ajc staff writer that got the Woody scoop. Ol’ Woody watched the lad sit under a tree in his front yard, in a driving rain I might add, hoping for a shot at an exclusive interview. Woody liked his tenacity and brought the lad inside. The rest is history…Have a great trip back. Go Vols

Ohio Buckholes-Every year ron zook is coach at illinois you get a practice run at an sec team.Illinois is only a medium class sec type team.Last year you lost to them so i guess ohio is only a half as* team huh.You best worry about your sister teams first.Technicaly you lost to two sec teams, since illinois has an sec coach, ohio is 0-10 against the sec now.OHIO IZ THE SEC”S HO NOW CUZ U BELONGS TO US.
