UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Do Eagles have any shot vs. Georgia?

The start of the season is right around the corner and, as a result, Georgia is shifting some of the focus off itself and putting it on its opponent, in this case Georgia Southern.

The Eagles are an interesting first-game opponent for the Dogs. Of course, they’re in Division I-AA (I don’t care, that’s what it is to me, not “Football Championship Subdivision”). So that effectively makes it a no-win situation for Georgia. Win big and you were supposed to. Let them keep it close and you’re overrated. Lose and you might be run out of town on a rail (see Appalachian State-Michigan and Lloyd Carr).

But to UGA’s credit it has agreed to play its good neighbors to the South every four years or so. It’s represents a financial bonanza for Georgia Southern, which receives several hundred thousand dollars for the game, and gives the program some exposure it otherwise might not receive.

I haven’t delved deeply yet into what all the Eagles will be bringing to Athens. But I’ve seen enough to know Georgia shouldn’t be in grave danger. I know I’ve always felt Chris Hatcher was one of the great up-and-coming coaches around, and he’s been up-and-coming for a while now. I know they bring nine starters back on defense from the team that finished 7-4 last season and tied for third in the Southern Conference. I know they lost eight starters on offense, including the quarterback.

In fact, a pretty good quarterback race has been going on in camp this preseason. According to Chad Bishop in the Statesboro Herald, redshirt freshman Lee Chapple is the current starter but Ohio State transfer Antonio Henton is closing in on him hard. Sounds like there might even be a chance the Bulldogs see both of them.

Meanwhile, Georgia Southern does very little like anybody else. They run a derivative of West Virginia’s 3-3-5 defense and Hatcher has been running a Hal Mumme-style spread offense for years, way before the spread became vogue offense in college football.

That said, I don’t expect Georgia to struggle quite as much with Southern this year as it did last time they played in 2004. The Dogs won 48-28 but were ahead only 13-7 at halftime and gave up 348 yards offense. I counted 70 freshmen and sophomores on the Eagles’ roster in their media guide and that’s not generally the makeup of an underdog team getting ready to pull an upset or even a scare.

So what do y’all think? You believe Georgia Southern can make a game of it? Will you be disappointed if Georgia doesn’t win by at least 50 points? Or do you just not care and want to hurry up and get this win and get it over with without injuries regardless of score?

Considering how banged up, it’s a good thing we’re starting off against them! No disrespect against G.S., but I just don’t see another App St - Michigan. I think our defense will stifle them, that’s if we still have anyone healthy enough to play.

Blue and White! Fight! Fight! Blue and White! Fight! Fight! Georgia Southern! Eagles! Fight! Fight! Fight!

Who am I kidding? I graduated GSU in 2005 (with Chad Bishop who is a friend of mine and a Brookwood grad) but I was bulldog born and bulldog bred, and when I die, I’ll be bulldog dead. I’m pulling for the dawgs to win but for GSU to play well. GSU will be back to being a national power soon, just not this year.

As someone who graduated from GSU I would like to think that GSU does have some shot. I mean did anyone give App State any shot at beating #5 Michigan? So why not. Any thing can happen in a game. Now do I really thing Southern can win YES!! Do I think there are going to, well no. UGA has why more depth at every postion on the team and will start to open the game up by the third series of the game. Just don’t overlook us like Michigan did App State and don’t write us off so fast. Chris Hatcher is going to take GSU back to where it was with Erk and Paul Johnson as head coach.

Chip, They better not even be in game. In order to maintain #1 we better be scoring style points. Richt and the team changed dramatically last year IMO. I hope coach realizes that in this day and time style points are needed to stay put. That OSU/USC game may very well bump us out of the top spot regardless of what we do. But if we slack at any point early don’t expect to keep #1. Damn 9 days to go. My seasonal anxiety disorder is getting worse by the day.

They don’t have the athletes to compete with the DAWGS. I don’t neccesarily want to win by 50 but a 32 or 35 point win would be nice.

With all the hype UGA has had going into the season, it would be no surprise to see these chumps choke against GSU. Let’s just hope we can keep enough of them out of jail once school (i.e. bar-hopping) starts to have a full starting line-up.

Don’t even compare UGA/GSU to App State/UM. Richt is nowhere near retirement. Lloyd Carr retired 3 years ago and has been known to take naps on the sideline during games. He woke up last year during the SportsCenter highlights of App State’s victory. He thought he had a nightmare. Guess he did.

I am not that concerned about the final score. Whether the coaches and players will admit it or not (they won’t of course), this kind of game is very much like an NFL preseason game. They’ll be experimenting with different schemes and personell to see what works best. You’ll probably see about 50% of the entire offense in this game at most. Same goes for the defense. Whether this game is a success or not will not be measured by the final score. It will be measured by the level of effort and focus the team displays. I hope to see the defense flying to the ball and the offense moving the ball well with no dropped passes or turnovers.

For the first time ever, we do not need any “style points”. We control our own destiny this year folks. No excuses.

On Tony’s blog today I said that Jacksonville State has a shot at beating Tech especially if GT struggles on offense then starts turning the ball over. GSU could give the Dawgs a game for a while if they play good D however I don’t think there offense won’t be able to score enough points. Hinton scares me more at QB because they can run more of the type of O they had last year with Jason Foster where as Chapple will be more of a strictly passing QB so that takes the option package out of the game. One thing I like about Hatcher is that when asked about his O he said if we have a good running QB we’ll be more spread option but when we have a passing QB we’ll be more Air Raid. Even more so we actually see him do just that! Which makes to much sense! It seems like Rodriquez & PJ have forgotten that they got where they are by adapting there offenses to there talent earlier in there careers but now seem to be trying to play there “system” with pieces that don’t fit. To me Michigan should be more of a spread passing O until they get the right QB’s to run the spread option stuff full bore. Meanwhile GT should add shotgun & I packages to there O to adapt to there talent. The option principals could still be used as well as more traditional plays out of those sets.

Who cares about style points! Just win the games! With our schedule if we win every game will be in the BCS title game. If we’re up by 28 in late the 3rd then sure you can think about style points otherwise just win the game & be happy about it.

NYC DAWG: CMR has been making a point to mention Kevin Perez at the end of all the O-line discussion. But, at last check, he was still running third-team center behind Chris Davis and Ben Jones. … As for backup LT, who knows? Looking right now like they’re going to have a three-man rotation with Kiante Tripp, Josh Davis and Vince Vance for the first game and with Cordy Glenn also working at RT. That will expand when Clint Boling comes back. But that’s just a theory because we’ve just barely gotten a first five out of them.

On paper we should win by fifty but Southern will come to play, probably run out of steam somewhere in the third quarter. At least I hope so.

Central Michigan with their quarterback is one that should not be overlooked. They did win their conference last year.

IMO I don’t anyone needs to fret over the OL. Don’t forget about Coach Searles. One of the best in the country. He will have somebody ready to go. The eager will step up and perform. BTW, I do respect and like GSU’s football program. Erk started a great thing there with just a couple bumps in the road since (Van Gorder) but yes they do have a coach in palce that respects that tradition and will win, I just hope it isn’t the first game of this season.

I went to both schools. BS in Biology at GSU 2000, Doctor of Pharmacy UGA 2005. Back then UGA was a good quality Div-1 A program, GSU was an elite Div-1 AA program. This made for some excellent football. Now UGA is an elite Div-1 program, and 1/2 of GSU’s team is made up of true/redshirt freshman with some in the starting lineup. They just aren’t what they used to be. GSU doesn’t stand a chance this year but they’ll be back and one day. They just might accomplish a victory over UGA, just not this year.

Georgia did not want to schedule this game, but because they could not refuse it politically. Many legislators and other politically influential persons believe the three major football programs should play each other periodically. As Chip quite rightly pointed out, UGA has nothing to gain by playing this game, this is Georgia Southern’s BCS championship game, and the Eagles will play like it regardless of the talent disparities between the two teams.

UGA needs to take control early and score often; otherwise, the Dawgs risk having a more stressful “preseason” game than they would prefer.

UGA has had a habit of letting teams like GSU, Cent. Mich., etc. stay in the game making it close. We need to dominate these teams, not necessarily with 50 point spreads but at least with ball control and “brick wall” defense.

If we are indeed a #1 team we should be scoring so easily that we have subs in early in the second half. Nothing against GSU, its just that they should not be able to hang with the best in the Nation… If we are the best in the Nation.

I’ll just be soooo happy to get into the season and see what we have.

AYTHING can happen, but I don’t think this is one of GSU’s best squads, at least not in the opener… they are very young offensively.

I believe that other than one player, UGA will outweigh the GSU Defensive front 2 deep by an average of 40-50 pounds. One would think we could run the ball pretty effectively and that will set up the pass.

Too much speed and size depth difference which should begin to show midway thru the 2nd quarter, but that is why they play the game. NOBODY thought Stanford had a chance against might USC and there are numerous examples of tight games and outright upsets. The team has to get up and be ready to play otherwise, it could be scary.

Do the Eagles have a shot ? Of course they do. Especially after all the crying I’m beginning to hear about injuries here, freshmen there, …. blah, blah, blah, blah. Sounds like someone isn’t comfortable at the top to me.

Dawg nation is tuning up the violins already and the season hasn’t even started.

Georgia Southern has athletes and speed. They do not have depth, which usually weighs heavy on any FCS team playing a BCS team. If the day is hot and muggy, it favors the Dawgs in a big way. If it is cool, breezy, etc. it gives a little more stamina to the Eagles. With the right conditions and a little luck, the Eagles can make it a game. They definitely won’t be intimidated.

IF, and it is a big IF, the game is out of hand in the 3rd quarter, Richt will have to balance making the score look good for a national audience… with keeping his 1st team healthy and giving the backups the reps they in a real game. It would be extremely foolish to overlook any game, regardless of the opponent. With all of the preseason injuries and suspensions we’re looking at for this first game, I think a realistic outcome would be a 14 point win. Certainly less than what we’re capable of, but we also do tend to play down to the level of competition, especially in the early games. GSU should be respected just as much as any other team on our schedule, and that includes our dreaded neighbors below them on the map.

The DAWGZ will run the table yall, I guarantee! It is amazing to me how so many people are discrediting the DAWGZ when everyone whose opinion counts have voted them as #1. The college football community voted them #1 because they have the most talent of any team in college football and have a longer winning streak right now than any other team. I don’t think that there is a team on the schedule (although very tough for sure) that can beat them. The team this year, even with injuries, will be loaded. Some of our best players will be coming back from injuries mid way through the season which should give the Dawgs some fresh legs for the second half of the year. Also, with The DAWGZ having two easier opponents the first two games they can work out any possible weaknesses and adjust to the changes in the OL. The GEORGIA BULLDOGS are ready, but are you ready to watch your team get thier a&*es handed to them? No excuses will be needed this year HOSS! BOOM! Loran whatdoyagot!

Chip,

The big worry to me seems to be the D-Ends. I think everyone’s overlooking that. It seemed to be one of the deepest units besides linebacker coming into camp, but I can’t believe how the injuries have decimated that group! We were down to one scholarship player and two walk-ons at one point!!!

My question is: If these D-Ends aren’t able to get enough practice, won’t that really affect our ability to get a good pass rush that we’ll VITALLY need when playing the likes of LSU and Florida?

Also, how does coach Fabris intend to prepare the D-Ends in the wake of all these injuries? The way it’s looking now, we won’t even have a two-deep come the first game!!!

What do you think, Chip?

Georgia’s injuries have not been anything out of the ordinary in my opinion. They are just getting more media attention because of the high ranking and expectations this year. The only major injury has been Sturdivant. But even the media’s treatment of that story has been somewhat puzzling. When they put out their preseason All-SEC team Sturdivant didn’t even crack the 2nd team. Yet the second he goes down the sky is falling for Georgia. You would have thought a nuclear bomb had went off in Athens the way they reacted to it. Seems like a bit of a contradiction to me. On the one hand, the guy isn’t All-SEC material. On the other, his absence is enough to sink the hopes of the #1 team in the country. Hmmmm….Thank god these morons withdrew from the BCS process. That was definitely a step in the right direction.

Hatcher announced that the following were suspended: Raja Andrews (SR WR) 07 Starter Charwel Brown (JR DE) 07 Letterman Brandavious Mann (RFR OL) Terrione Benefield (JR LB) 07 Letterman Damon Suggs (SR DE) 07 Starter Zeke Rozier (RFR RB) Garryon Taylor (JR WR) 07 Letterman Ronnie Wiggins (JR DB) 07 Letterman

Ouch, 6 of 8 had decent playing time and 2 were starters on an already VERY young team. sorry but GO DAWGS!!!

GSU has a shot just by stepping on the field. Don’t think for a minute they don’t want a shot at the #1 team in the country.

It is a lose/lose game for the Dawgs unless we hammer them and win by 50. Personally I am not Spurrieresque and see no point in running up a score for the delight in it or the Polls. Most likely CMR would have to play starters the whole game for that kind of score.

I say remember APPY ST. Hit them in the mouth early hard and often. Demoralize them and put the game away asap.

They are a good team with a good coach in division AA but still a cupcake. Remind them of that fact. GSU definitely has the tools to ruin a dream season the Dawgs if overlooked.

Regan - 2 1/2 QTRS would be a half + half a quarter, not a HALF and a QTR as you claim. It’s a lot easier to say 2 1/2 quarters. And what kind of sentence is “Is now GSU will be in the game for 3 Quarters”?

No way the Eagles stand a chance with or without the 8 players suspended. Too many young guys on that squad to compete with the Dawgs. Regardless, they are excited about the opportunity and will show up to play the game.

Hatch will build the program. It’s just going to take time and last year he had to play with what he had. This year is the first real opportunity that he’s had to recruit for his system. Give them 3 years and the Eagles will be back on top of the division where they belong.

For now, I hope both squads play their best games and neither one of them incur too many injuries.

This game is, and always will be, a tribute to Coach Russell. He meant so much to both programs that we ought to take this opportunity every 4 years to remember him.

The question I’ve always wanted answered is why TECH never would play Southern. I was born and bred a DAWG and graduated from SOUTHERN. I was proud of both schools for being willing to play each other every four years. Never could quite understand what TECH was so afraid of.

I’m hoping that with Coach Johnson at TECH, SOUTHERN will eventually get it’s chance to play them every four years too. It’s good for the State of Georgia.

BTW……The best thing TECH has done in a long, long time is hire Johnson. If any of you TECH fans question his ability, let me tell you first-hand that this guy is a gamer and he’s committed to winning. I’m not a TECH fan but i am a Paul Johnson fan.

Hope all three schools have banner years.

PRACTICE UPDATE

Dogs going somewhat lighter today as they’re in shells and doing a lot of run-through for tomorrow’s dress rehearsal scrimmage for Georgia Southern down at the stadium… . Again a somewhat cool day. The electronic temperature gauge they have on the field, which takes into account wind and humidity, was saying 79. You know sure as the world it will be 102 the day of the game… .

Some observations:

Tanner Strickland didn’t make it back to the field as CMR predicted. He was working out in the weightroom, where we learned yesterday he’s pretty much the strongest guy on the team. Indications are it was merely precautionary since they were just going in shells today… .

Speaking of testing, I was talking to asst. strength coach Keith Gray about yesterday’s wt. room numbers and said I’d been hoping to also get 40-yard dash times. He told me that the fastest guy on the team was CB Bryan Evans, who had clocked a 4.26 but that fellow corner Remarcus Brown was right there with him by hundredths of seconds. Then Keith told me about a race between Evans, Brown and WR Tony Wilson in which Wilson “smoked” the other two guys. Gray said it was untimed and unofficial, especially since Evans and Brown were claiming to have pulled up… . Bottom line: Those are three fast guys… .

Injury scene: DT Kade Weston (knee) still out. Add DT Brandon Wood to the list. Don’t know with what yet… .

That’s all for now. Jenna’s handling the notes today so she’ll post a full report this evening after practice. I’ll give you a post-practice update after we get Richt and players.

Since you’re on the subject of Statesboro today, any news of DeAngelo Tyson’s progress in camp? Probable redshirt? He was so highly recruited and we have high hopes. He seems to be one of several young DTs not getting much pub this year (along with Wood and AJ Harmon). I assume that’s because that position is so stacked this year. Next year, however —especially if Geno leaves early for the NFL — the cupboard could be a little bare. So just want to check the progress of next year’s DT crop. Thanks.

POST-PRACTICE UPDATE

A.J. Green is running at second-team flanker, behind mohamed Massaquoi, according to both CMR and receivers coach John Eason. I had thought A.J. a split end until now and that’s actually what A.J. told me earlier but not according to Eason. The flanker runs wide at Georgia but either way it’s the Z route and the Z routes are what A.J. is learning. The other starting wideouts are Kris Durham at inside slot and Kenneth Harris at SE. Reserves include Tony Wilson, Demiko Goodman and Tavarres King.

Justin Fields has moved ahead of Ben Boyd at backup fullback behind Shaun Chapas.

Good news from Brannan Southerland, who saw his doctor today after Monday’s CT scan. Said the doc very pleased with the results. Still not 100 percent healed but let Southerland come out of the boot for increasing number of hours each day. From now on it becomes a pain tolerance issue.

Matthew Stafford said Kiante Tripp has looked really good at left tackle… .

Knowshon Moreno said he couldn’t say whether he’d be returning punts or not but that he likes it, “like any other player would.” Said he doesn’t care if he does or not, just up to coaches. “I’d play center if they asked me to.” … Had a writer in from New Jersey today doing a story on him.

CMR said he’s looking forward to today’s “practice game” at Sanford Stadium because “we’re finally all going to be on the same sideline, on the same team. Going to be as close to a real game as possible, with a coin toss, a running clock and all special teams. Only difference is it will be against the scout team.

Ghost, I spoke with the Statesboro High coach this week. He said that John Knox and Justin HOuston will be seeing action this year and that DeAngelo Tyson may not be redshirted (seems the UGA coaches are high on him).

As for this game, my Eagles would not even play if we didn’t think we had a chance to win, but logic says we are just too young (50 redshirts and/or true freshmen on the roster this year.) Hatcher is a great coach but the ball will have to take some funny hops this year for GSU to stay in the game. PROUD to be an EAGLE! GATA.

So sorry about the suspension news today. I’m sure Coach Hatcher had a tough decision. It’s awful for the rest of the team (and, I’m sure, heartbreaking for the kids who were caught). Still, if this UGA/GSU game is like all the others, we had better be sure our chinstraps are buckled tight. I say let the Big Dawg eat at the start of the game…but due to the injury list—keep it conservative. Dawgs 14-0 in the first quarter, maybe 21-0. Once it’s established Southern CAN’T SCORE against #1 D, then slowly start working down the depth chart to let our #1 players rest. By early in the 2nd half we should see our #2 O moving down the field — almost in practise scrimmage mode — giving the lower parts of the depth chart as much playing time as possible.

It’s off the subject and I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned it yet, but there was a little piece in the Orlando Sentinel that had Lou Holtz’ take on the SEC. Says he, “Florida will win the SEC. Georgia’s schedule is too difficult and the Bulldogs will always have trouble with South Carolina, which will have the conference’s best defense.” I’m so glad the sage one has enlightened us. Since he’s wrong 95% of the time, UGA should be OK.

Ok, we get it. UGA is Number 1 in 3 dozen polls across the world in college football, including now today Number 1 in the BCS Poll at http://www.collegeBCS.com . Enough of that already. We get it that Matthew Stafford is the Top QB Draft-Eligible Junior after the year, and that Knowshon Moreno is a draft-eligible redshirt sophomore after the season. We know we play 9 games against Top 25 teams this season, so enough already on that too.

We know the fans of every other football team in the nation are all in here trying to find something negative to say about us and positive to say about their own team in direct retort to all this media attention.

I’m not used to it. I graduated UGA in the late 70s and we were very good then, great fun to watch from the Railroad Tracks or student $1 tickets, and even when we Won, they didn’t give us credit. I attribute most of that to the articles in the AJ-C sensationalizing things such as UGA has no offensive line, no kicker, a quarterback not as good as Tim Tebow who was 1-4, not MJS’ 3-1 against the Top 25 Final AP Poll teams last year. Presumably, the AJ-C is OUR HOMETOWN PAPER.

Growing up Dad had season tickets to Sanford, and traveled significantly to away games with seniority points for ticket allocations. He had an UGA Van built-out to his specifications including the Georgia Fight Song on a CD that played when he tooted the horn, Color TV, stand-up space and Captain Chairs. He took me to watch Fran Tarkenton play, as a kid and I will never forget him pointing out that he filled the air with long balls when no one else did. We Won and Won and Won and Won.

Look, I’m a football fan of my alma mater, have a family with degrees like I as the oldest son, from UGA. I was born a Bulldog. I readily admit I am a Homer Bulldog Fan, and am damn Proud of it.

I look forward to UGA VII. When I was born Mike was our mascot. I don’t remember him. I remember every UGA, however; and saw each. I Love Dawgs, always have, and they Love me. I am very saddened by Our Loss of UGA VI.

If I ever watched an NFL game (Dad had season tickets to the Falcons’ games for years until I said I would not go with him.) it was because I was wanting to see a Georgia Bulldog play in the NFL game. I am told we had season tickets to the Washington Redskins’ games too when my parents met at the Pentagon where they both worked. He decoded secret documents as USMC Major in WWII and she typed them up. He was an Orphan from near Savannah Georgia and she from a well-to-do family in Ohio on the Ohio River.

I got season tickets to The Bulldogs’ myself when I graduated. I study the Media Guide. I buy the Preseason Magazines. I participate online and have since 1977 when I built my 1st PC and hosted 2 Bulletin Boards as Webmaster.

I avidly travel to away games, although the 2,000 mile trek down I-20 (which changes it name to I-10) to Tempe, Arizona is not 1 of my current goals – keeping our company afloat in these tough times if far more my goal for the families supported by our technological prowess.

I go to the bowl games, and always have. I have stories you would love to hear like the 4th and Dumb Dickey play against us at the Gator Bowl in JAX when after the game, I put the 4th down marker under my Matt Robinson Alabama Game Jersey (another great story when everyone was interviewing Matt and they must have thought I was a reporter, so when they opened the locker-room, I walked in with them and he turned to hang it on a hook in his locker, and it fell to the floor so I picked it up and no one noticed.) and carried it home too.

I’ve seen all this happen. I remember it with alacrity.

I am ready for a week and 2 days to pass. I’m ready for the season. I will be back in here to tell you how poorly your team did and how well Ours did by direct comparison daily. I want to watch the games, remember The Plays, and Tailgate. Give it your Best Shot : We Will Be.

12-2.

I suspect the Eagles have a decent shot, but UGA will squeak this weak opener out. Until UGA learns to open on the road with a respectful opponent, UGA will never receive any respect.

I predict UGA will cruise through the first 2 games, then trip up against USC and ASU and here’s why:

USC

  1. USC is a better program than UGA 2. ASU . ASU is a better program than UGA
  2. Dennis Erickson knows how to win national titles and will outcoach CMR

I predict UGA will cruise through the first 2 games, then trip up against USC and ASU and here’s why:

USC

  1. USC is a better program than UGA
  2. Spurrier knows how the beat the dogs like a dog year in and year out, so no change in 2008
  3. Spurrier is finally getting results from his recruits and USC would make a run at the SEC title this year, leaving UGA out in the cold once more.
  4. Spurrier is a more experienced coach and a better tactician vs. CMR

ASU 1. ASU is a better program than UGA 2. Dennis Erickson knows how to win national titles and will outcoach CMR 3. Carpenter is back and healthy, thus he will dominate the UGA secondary.

After UGA loses these 2 games in a row, UGA will drop out of the top-ten, then face losses to UT, AU, and LSU, and all those rabid $10,000 UGA boosters will be calling or CMR to step down.

CMR will be asked to leave by 2010 when he fails to even make it to a BCS title game.

Gratfuldawghead, I have the same dilemma as you. As a DirecTV subscriber, I’ve been looking into the possibility of buying the UGA-GSU game as a PPV event and/or part of the ESPN GamePlan pkg. Although customer service at DirectTV is virtually nonexistent, here is what I believe the situation to be after talking to them and checking on both directv.com and espn.com: As a PPV event, the game will be available to cable subscribers only. Dish Network and DirecTV customers will not be allowed to receive the game as a PPV event. As for ESPN GamePlan, the game is on the schedule but will be blacked out in the local market. Your best bet is to do what I did, get a friend who has Comcast to order the game and invite you over to watch.

Mike bobo interception idiot:

How many points did Spurrier’s vaunted offense score during our last trip to Columbia? ZERO

Against the worst UGA team since richt’s first year.

How many points has Spurrier generated in 3 years vs UGA ?? 34

WOW, impressive.

You are dumber than a mushroom.

If GSU still ran the Triple Option I’d give them a decent chance to keep it close. But Georgia has too much speed on defense for the spread to work. I mean GSU isn’t Florida or West Virginia. Too much speed difference between Division I & Division IA for GSU to have much of a shot.

As to the cable TV issue, does Comcast think that by blocking out all the DirecTV/Dish subscribers from the UGA/GSU game they will somehow convince us to dump satellite and buy their crappy product? If so, they are sorely mistaken. This type of churlish behavior only reinforces why I never will be a Comcast TV customer.

Chip,

Do you expect Georgia to revert back to running some of their no-huddle offense that Richt brought here from FSU during his first few years as coach? If I recall he ran into issues with how quickly (or not) he was able to run this type of offense because of officials and rule changes. There has not been much mention of it this pre-season as far as I have read.

BAM511 Yes, I think you’ll see some no-huddle from Georgia but only as a change of pace. Nowadays they prefer to take their time, size up the defense and run or pass based on what the defense shows or what’s working.

Thanks to App St, the dawgs won’t be looking ahead. Georgia is well coached and ready to show the world! You GSU fans and grads are to be commended for your positive attitude but really! You just had 8 players suspended. It’s going to be an ugly affair! And watch your step Eagles, the new UGA is gonna leave his mark on your side of the field.

Bob 17 int’s.

I respect the Georgia basher that comes on here and makes a bold prediction about UGA losing to S. Carolina AND ASU and then gives us reasons as to why that will happen.

If you are right, I will give you credit for your prediction, but if UGA goes 4-0 to start, we expect you to come back on here and revisit the situation.

For the record, I disagree with you about Spurrier. He was a terrific coach in the 90’s. He has gone about .500 in his last 6 or 8 seasons. He sullied his reputation with a weak NFL record and has not achieved anything of note at S. Carolina other than a big win here and there.

He was shutout 2 years ago by Georgia IN HIS OWN STADIUM, I can’t wait to see how he blames his staff and players individually if that were to happen twice in a row.

He won’t do it but I hope Richt puts up 70 on them. I like GSU and all, but this isn’t about being nice anymore. It’s about setting a tone. UGA has a shot at a NATIONAL title this year and poll voters around the country need to see that UGA means business from start to finish every game this year.

What was the final score of the USC vs. UGA game in Athens in 2007?

How come UT has stepped on your face for the past 2 seasons?

How many national titles does Spurrier have compared to CMR?

How many times did Spurrier kick the dogs to the curb at UF?

How many times has UGA beaten UF in the last 18 tries?

When was the last time UGA won a national title?

How many titles has Miami, USC, OU, Texas, and LSU won since 1980?

You sir are the reason everyone regards the UGA program as a joke and the fact that UGA fans will never admit their program is failing, when it is. CMR has you so snowed, so just keep writing those checks, while he laughs all the way to the bank.

Bottom line: win some national titles, then you have some bragging rights, otherwise, shut it up and strap it on.

Let me break it down like this: 1) GSU fans’ comments deserve no responses. They are a junior college with an inferiority complex towards the flagship University in Athens. They are our annoying little cousins that are just asking for arse whooping. Ignore them. 2) Most “eagle” fans on here are tech fans. They are so depressed and humiliated over our ownership of their dump of a technical college (located in the ghetto) that they will assume ANY other fans identity just to try and pick an internet fight, which is the only fight a cowardly nerd would ever think of starting. Plus, they’re too chickensh!t to even play GSU, because, unlike Georgia, the nerds might actually lose that game. 3) Most “florida” fan on here are either (again) poser tech fans, or the embodiment of what you do not want your children to grow up to be. Ignore them as well. 4) Gamecock fans need to be laughed at. That is their only function. Fodder. Yes, I know the chickens won in A-town last year. But, if the best season your program has ever had includes a loss to Navy, then, well, there you go.

That is all.

As a GSU grad and a UGA fan, I’ve thought about this a good bit. Upsets are a risk when you have an experienced under dog with a favorite that does not take preparation seriously. In this case, GSU is simply too young to qualify for the first part of that and I don’t recall ever seeing Coach Richt or a UGA team so motivated going into a season. I think it will be a blow out, but Richt being the gentleman that he is, will sit on it in the 4th quarter. The score won’t be a Spurrierish 70-0, but will be a big win in the area of 48-7, or something in that range.

After watching ESPN Gameday Season Preview Show Saturday, you would think that Georgia could only look forward to playing in the Almond Bowl or something played before Christmas. I agree what their saying about our tough schedule, but I believe we are up to the task. It makes me feel better that they haven’t picked us, because they are not very good at picking the BCS Champion even when they are only two teams to choose from. Most of the Gameday Crew don’t think we will be undefeated when we play Florida and none of them think we can beat Florida. If you believe them, we will lose four games. Wow, that’s a lot different that what everybody else is thinking. I’m going to make a prediction that the Dawgs are going to make them eat their words again this year. GO DAWGS!!!!

The dawgs always play down to opponents and this week will be no different. GSU is gonna bring some heat to Athens early in the year. The dawgs are overrated as usual and until they get past their usual “just beat em enough with no killer instict” football they wont go anywhere in the SEC, much less than the NC. GSU rolls 28-24.

Ok…..Im a GSU Grad. I was also Bulldog raised. I saw hershel wakler carry the ball for the first time as a dog, and also witnessed the “run Lindsey run” play in 80…….while in the stands…..with my mother.

Anyway, I mean no disrespect to GSU, but it has to be a 1 to 1000 shot this year. UGA has more talent than last year, great coaching, and 9 out of 11 defensive starters returning.

All I know is that there is not a team in the counrty who wanted to play UGA in a bowl game last year. The reason on the street they drew Hawii in the Sugar Bowl is that a USC / UGA matchup in the Rose bowl would have shown up the BCS championship.

The offense is now poised with great experience and talent.

I hope GSU plays well, but the depth will eventually get them.

UGA has a real shot this year, but in my opinion the SEC championship is almost a greater honor than the BCS. Lets face it. More years than not the SEC could easily have the top 3-4 teams in the country. Thats why we will never see a BCS playoff series. It would make USC, OSU, and a few other have to earn thier ranking…….and they dont have the year in year out talent for that.

If you disagee…….OSU is 0-9 in modern BCS play…….The proofs in the pudding.
