UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Richt on A.J.: ‘We’ll get him in the game’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This just in: A.J. Green will play this season. Probably in the first game. Probably a lot eventually.
OK, that’s probably not breaking news. It has been pretty evident since Green committed to Georgia nearly two years ago that he was probably going to see the field the first time he trotted through the gap in the hedges the day of a game. But coach Mark Richt removed all doubt yesterday when asked about the long, tall wideout from Summerville, S.C., who has been sidelined much of the preseason with a hip flexor injury.
“He’s just missed so much, you know?,” Richt said at first, making you think he was about to say something different. Then …
“All I can tell you about him is we’re going to get him in the game. I don’t know when but we’ll get him in the game.”
Here’s the deal: Green has struggled a little with grasping the offense. The thing is, in Georgia’s system, when Matthew Stafford calls a pass play in the huddle, it’s not as simple as the split end (Green’s position) runs a deep post on said play. Once they get to the line of scrimmage, the coverage that the secondary is in will dictate the route. Both the quarterback and the receiver have to recognize that and agree on it silently. Often, the quarterback may check out of one play and into another based on the defense. Now another whole set of options is introduced.
Said Richt: “[Green’s] still got a long way to go. There’s still some things he just does naturally extremely well. But there’s still that learning curve to try to understand the offense, a particular route, how we want it run, how we want it run against different coverages. There’s lot of nuances he’s got to get comfortable with. But it’s good to get him back going.”
That said, it’s still just football and there’s nothing stopping offensive coordinator Mike Bobo from just calling specific plays for Green on occasion. You can pretty much count on the Dogs, trying to hit him deep a couple of times in the first couple of games. But by the time they get to South Carolina in game three, the sophistication of the defenses will jump 10-fold. It’ll get more complicated.
But something tells me you’ll see the Dogs go to Green a lot in Columbia. The Gamecocks went after Green hard, especially after he committed to Georgia. I’m sure the Bulldogs would love to showcase him.
We’ll see soon enough.
Sing it: SEC better than Big Ten
You have to check out the song — and accompanying video — written by college football enthusiast Ryan Parker. The title says it all, “SEC Is Better Than the Big Ten.” …
CBS schedule leaked
Wondering what games may end up on CBS later this year? It’s normally a closely-guarded decision not finalized until the last possible moment. But apparently it intentionally or unintentionally leaked its tentative schedule on the Internet. You can see a copy at SouthernSaturday.com.

Gator fans who are so worried about our injuries should instead be worried that: A) Percy Harvin still hasn’t practiced and: B) He’s apparently so frustrated that he’s been starting fights with his teammates — i.e. Chris Rainey.

LOL. Only in the south can pea brained people truly think that the SEC is better than the Big 10, LOL. I can’t stand it anymore. I am truly inundated with idiots. You guys have lost your minds and I learned a long time ago that you can’t argue with a fool. I’m putting in for a job transfer today and won’t be back. At least, until we spank your azz in Miami (LOL-if one of you AH’s even get there)

I am not worried about AJ Green or Caleb King. I want to know about our placekicking. We lost a mighty weapon in Brandon Cottuu and as we found out with Andy Bailey, a shakey kicker in pressure situations can be more costly than a back up RB or freshman WR.
Who is the leading PK? How has the PK looked in practice.

The ohio state buckeyes……REALLY I mean come on you have to know the SEC is better because we beat you down 2 years in a row. The only reason you even made it to the NC game was because of your cupcake conference. It should be named the Big 1 because although your team has quality players and coaching you guys still suck. Oh and your going to lose to USC on sept 13 BAD!!!! so don’t worry about the NC, who knows you might make it to a BCS bowl game but you’ll probably blow that too. Love UGA and the mighty mighty SEC.

AJ sounds just what the DAWGS ordered. It’s gonna be a real treat seeing him on Saturdays!.And to the Junkeyes, you have not beaten an SEC Team in 13 tries. The SEC has dominated with Wins over the not so big 10 for years, so pleae, transfer out of our beloved South and take as many of those Junkeyes with you.If you don’t like watching GOOD SEC COLLEGE FOOTBALL go back to OHIO and take your Big 10 network with you, you want see any of us trying to stop you. See you in Miami, GO DAWGS!

To The OHIO STATE BUCKEYE:
I don’t have to bring up the obvious but I can talk with you on a level playing field. Top to bottom the SEC is deeper and better than the Big Ten. I have close connections to the Big 10 and they are even humble enough to acknowlegde the SEC is better. I respect the Big 10 and pull for Michigan to win it everyyear but it kinda gets old when it’s OSU and Michigan every year year after year. I’m really pulling for Zook to continue to land top recruits at Illinois and continue to bring that SEC influence to the Big 10. In a nutshell the Big 10 is a respectable conference but top to bottom the SEC is better, even with Vanderbilt, they are 3 times better than Northwestern. The Pac 10 and the Big 10 should merge because all of this old traditon stuff ( I respect tradition to a degree) is really getting old. Will the Big 10 play a night game? (yes I know OSU and Wisconsin will play at night this season) Will they Ever play past Thanksgiving? Will they add another school and split the conference up (no because they love OSU and Michigan to finish the year). Good Conference , not better than SEC, top to bottom.

Is it that he is struggling to grasp the offense or grasping the ability to stay on the field? It seems like that latter. If he is on the field getting the rep’s in he would get in synch w/ Stafford sooner rather than latter. All they need is to get the timing down.

No one invited you to move here an no one wants you here. Outsiders like you have diminished the community in Atlanta and N. Ga. in general. You can not possible leave Georgia fast enough to make us happy. Please leave, and take all the other yankee transplants with you.
And by the way, it appears that we need to remind you that OSU is 0-9 against the SEC in post season play. The most specious ranking across the board in all the meaningless pre-season rankings that are out there is that for OSU. OSU’s late predictability for a late season swan dive is exceeded only by South Carolina.

Chip, correct me if I’m wrong, but I have gleaned from CMR’s comments that Blair Walsh has won the kicking job (placekicking). I was at the spring game and saw two kickers make long field goals. If he has beaten these guys out, it looks to me like he is the real deal. An update would be great!

THE Ohio State Buckeyes——Personally, I try not to engage in the more unseemly forms of smack talk and one-up’s-manship, so, shall we restrict this discussion to our respective alma maters? Do we really need to recount the recent BCS and NCAA history of the University of Florida and Ohio State? And, if you really want to make it an SEC-vs-Big 10 conference comparison, need I also remind you of the outcome of last year’s BCS championship game against a 2-loss SEC champion, or OSU’s all-time 0-9 bowl record against SEC teams, or OSU’s recent 0-2 bowl record against South Carolina (one of those middle-of-the-pack SEC teams that you so quickly dismiss)?
Please feel free to remind me about the Gators’ 6-point loss to Michigan last New Year’s Day. Go ahead, we can take it. Our Gator kids don’t like losing to Michigan or anyone else, and our coaches don’t plan on making a habit of it.
So, see you in January, THE OSU. I hope your Buckeye kids are looking forward to playing another one of our pushover SEC teams in their bowl game. Rumor would have it that UGA would now like to play your team in January, too, so be careful for what you wish.

Please stop blogging on this site Ohio Bait fans. You don’t even deserve the right to talk with REAL football fans. You guys play flag football up ther in The Small Ten. You will never be better than the SEC and your hold on The Small Ten is about to end after this year. Coach Rich Rod is going to have Michigan creaming Ohio Bait for the next 5 years once he gets a black QB to run his system. Mark it down that in 5 yrs, Jim Tressel will be forced to leave Ohio Bait.

CHIP Something I hadn’t thought about until yesterday. USC and OSU play Sept. 13. With USC and OSU having so many 1st place votes in the polls, the winner of that game will probably get the first place votes of the loser. So basically, don’t expect the dawgs to be ranked #1 on Sept. 14, even if we get out of SC with a W.
Not that I care that much about rankings, especially preseason, just thought it was interesting that win or lose, we probably won’t be #1 four weeks into the season.

I’ve been an Atlanta sports fan my whole life, and always root for southern teams.
But these things tend to go in cycles, and it would be foolish for us to think otherwise. We can always truncate records to make one team or conference look better or worse than others.
If you look at NCAA record books from the beginning of college football, **the current 12-team SEC actually has a LOSING RECORD vs. the Big 10:
89-95-7**
Of course the SEC has dominated the recent history, and that’s what most people are reacting to, but let’s be clear and call that out. History teaches us, though, that it could easily reverse trend, so let’s enjoy this run for now.
Of the 12 SEC schools, UGA has the best winning percentage vs. the Big 10 (7-2, .778), and I’ll be rooting for them to make it 8 wins this year, if they play a Big 10 school in a bowl game.

All of you who say that rankings don’t matter need to ask Auburn what they think. If it were not for one of the craziest seasons in recent memory OSU would not have played for the NC because of their ranking to start the season (#11 i believe). You can’t expect a season like last year with all the upsets to happen every year. It was a very unusual season. Pre season polls play a big part in where a team ends up. A 12-1 team who was ranked 15th is not going to be where a 12-1 team who started #2 is at.

Best comment ever made about the Big Ten was when Lewis Grizzard took a job as a sports writer for a paper in Chicago. After years of watching SEC football he had to cover the Big Ten. He said “It is like watching two mules fighting over a turnip”.

And the women in the SEC are much more attractive as well. I will give the Big 10 credit for an ice hockey program superior to the SEC (the ponds never freeze over solid enough, if at all, in the South).
Green will energize and enhance the UGA receiving corps the same that Moreno did for UGA running backs. In my mind the struggle is how to split up the running/passing game. If Stafford improves significantly and Green/Massaquoi/etc. catch everything thrown their way then it’s pick your poison time for opposing defenses. Of course, the answer is that Stafford looks at the defense and takes what is available.

That random Buckeye fan is a raving lunatic…what a boob.
Green is a big time playmaker. I watched this kid while he was in high school and he was outstanding then. I can only imagine how good he could be with the quality coaching he’ll get at UGA. I can’t say that I wish you guys good luck this year, but it’ll fun to watch. Richt has really turned UGA around and put it on the national scene. Can you handle the pressure?

Mr. Wrestling #2: Good one! …
Lowcountry Bulldawg: Both. Green’s ability to grasp the offense has been hindered by his inability to stay on the practice field. But he’ll be fine… .

To Greg on the previous blog….Wow Greg ……what a great write up on Gamecock football! You failed to mention though that since 1988 UGAs record over the Gamecocks is only 11-7. UGA being such a power house you would think that the series wouldnt be so close as of late. Hmmmmm…maybe that’s why some sport pundits on espn and others are still skeptical about UGA. Greg… all I know is that the lowly Gamecocks won 16 - 12 and held UGA without a T D last year ouch… Spurrier owns the dawgs which you failed to mention as well. The Gamecocks owned the dawgs last year and will own them again this year too. BTW Seems the dawgs are getting their more than fair share of injuries here lately. Coaching staff must be having problems with teaching proper technique and physical conditioning. UGa needs to get healthy so there wont be any excuses when we play them and send the back to Athens with their tails tucked between their legs on 9/13/08.

Here’s the only thing I care about as far as the season goes.
Will the team approach every game with the same passion they displayed in the seven games following the Vandy debacle?
Will they show up emotionally in every game this year like they did from the Florida game, on?
Because that is what it is going to take to win the SEC this year.
I don’t care about the MNC, it’ll take care of itself. But to win the SEC we are going to have to finish 11-1 in the regular season.
Because Tennessee is going to be a beast this year on defense.
Not Florida, Tennessee. Florida doesn’t have a lick of defense, again, so they don’t have a prayer, and every big-mouthed, big-talkin’ Florida fans knows it.
Florida is going to have two losses before they even play us. One to Tennessee and one to LSU.
So it is imperative we beat Tennessee this year.
But it can’t be the Blackout Game. For two reasons.
1) We have a week off before the game, so we don’t need the emotional lift.
2) The team should have more than enough to go on as far as getting blown out two years in a row by Tennessee to get pumped up off of that alone without the need to get pumped-out by a Blackout, and the same goes for the Wine and Cheese crowd in the South Side Stands. Yeah, you alums, I’m talking to you who sit down through the whole game and don’t raise your voice above a whisper.
The Blackout needs to happen at the Cocktail Party, where the team will need the emotional lift a Blackout will give them after coming off of what will most likely be a brutal game at LSU the week before.
Imagine what that scene will be like in J’ville: one half of the stadium all in Black, screaming their lungs out during every Gator offensive possession, louder than anything they’ve ever heard before, turning that joke of a “neutral” site into a home atmosphere for us, 90 miles away from Gainesville.
Cocktail Party needs to be a Blackout.
And the team needs to approach every game this year like they did the last seven from last year.

hank, do you even know what the sports term “own” means? You don’t own somebody because you beat them. You can’t gonna own somebody in a game coming up either. “own” has to do with somebody who can’t ever seem to beat you with any regularity. Just thought I’d help you out you so you can properly run your yap next time you try it around your pals.
Spurrier at FL, yes, he owned Georgia, that was proper use. Actually he owned a lot of teams, when he was at Florida. I’m surprised you would bring that up since it makes SC look eeven worse, but hey, knock yourself out.
BTW, I think ALL the sports pundits are skeptical of SC, but why wouldnt they be. ESPN not ready to claim UGA is the best team in the country. Only one of the best. Oh darn, you really stuck it to us there.

UGA has losses to 2 current Big 10 schools: Penn State in 1983 and Michigan in 1957.
You’re correct. Penn St was an Independent at the time of that game. The NCAA tracks records using current conference alignment and alignment at the time of the game.
It’s much easier to look at current conference alignment since teams used to change conferences a lot more often in the old days. The Big 10 is a much older conference than the SEC (1896 vs. 1933), so you again run into truncating of time periods if you look at game day alignment. In fact, several “SEC” schools were playing Big 10 schools long before there was an SEC.

Altamaha Dawg….. Let me share something with you in sport jargon…Ever heard the phrase “owning or having bragging rights for the year”? Does that also apply to teams that never seem or have trouble in scoring T D on a certain team? Thus the defense owned the losing opponents offense that day. PRACTICE UPDATE
Not a lot of news to bring to you today. Kind of status quo for the most part. Dogs going in full pads and probably will get after it pretty good today because the tentative schedule calls for them to go through a dress rehearsal for the game Wednesday (or maybe Thursday depending on a possible change).
Anyway, some observations:
Looks like injuries for two potential starters: OG Tanner Strickland was in green and only walking. Left the field and headed to the training room early. Also, LB Akeem Dent was in green sans pads and walking very gingerly around the field. I’ll have to check with CMR after practice but neither looked like they were going to bounce back in the next day or two… . DB Makiri Pugh (ankle) was riding a stationary bike beside OL Chris Little. … On the positive side defensive ends Rod Battle (sports hernia) and Jeremy Longo (broken hand) were still in green but participating in more of the drills… .
FWIW, just noticed today that C Chris Davis can snap the ball with either hand. Seems to alternate almost every snap but I couldn’t establish a pattern. I’m sure opposing DCs will try to. But I guess Davis could switch up to mess with their heads. I’ll try to remember to ask him or Richt about it… .
Speaking of Davis, he seems well entrenched as the starting center now. Ben Jones is still getting work there but I almost never see him with the 1s. On that note I keep seeing the same five with the 1s — LT Tripp, LG Vance, C Davis, RG Glenn, RT Davis.
That’s all for now. More after practice.

I’ve been bugging DVH and the strength and conditioning folks for some of the weight room numbers on the players this summer. A lot of you guys asked about it and I’ve heard it was a phenomenal year. for instance, I know that at least four players tied or broke Brannan Southerland’s power clean record. I know it used to be 385 and the new one is 400 but I can’t recall exactly who all reached it… . Anyway DVH and his asst. Keith Gray told me it’s a compliance issue. But they’ve supposedly been working with the UGA compliance director to find out what they can and can’t disclose. So I’m hoping to get something on that pretty soon… .
TybeeDawg: Joe Cox is doing fine. He had a setback with a sore throwing elbow but came back this past weekend and seems to be passing fine. Logan Gray has made great improvement but the fact that Gray is working three special teams tells me they believe Cox can handle backup duties just fine.

supaATL, good points about SEC v. Big 10. These things go in cycles, and when you look at the overall history, the Big 10 has a small lead with the SEC closing fast.
Sort of like Georgia - Florida. There are Gator fans who would be genuinely shocked to learn that Georgia has a 10-game series leads and owns 75-0, 51-0, and 44-0 victories over Florida. Before Spurrier came along Georgia had a huge series lead. These things go in cycles. It’s impossible to find rhymes or reasons for it.

scott: Dontavius Jackson appears to have fully recovered from his wrist injury and is getting a lot of work in practice because of injuries to others. I would’ve said earlier he was a good candidate to redshirt but Richt said the other day that he expected all the freshman skill players to play this season. We’ll see.

No actually I have never heard of the term “owning for the year”. Or a 16-12 “owning thier offence”. Now “bragging right”, yes, very familiar. So you would like to change your wording to bragging right? I’m ok with that. My only issue with SC fan and bragging rights is that you seem to claim them irrespective of the outcome of the games. And the one year you DID actually deserve it, you prove just how insolent you are.
Funny you should mention scoring. As I recall you guys crowed just as loud the year before after failing to score a SINGLE point.
I can understand how it is that you do not understand that the overwhelming majority of SEC champs needed somebody to lose to get there. Having never been there and all.

Wow, Ohio State fan that wants to transfer out of the Southeast cause he’s tired of the homers here.Probably because you have no facts to back up your inflated team in a low rent conference. We won’t have to take care of you for the title, USC is going to put you in your place.I’ve got an idea though, why don’t you bleach those Buckeye uniforms and pull a ‘pink out’ at USC.

The Dawgs won’t score fifty points on GSU because CMR won’t run up the score when he gets a decent lead. I’ve seen him scale back the offense on many an occasion during his seven years at GA.

POST-PRACTICE REPORT
OK, got the lowdown on a few things:
First, as always, the injuries: CMR didn’t think the situation with Tanner Strickland was too serious. Said it’s a sprained foot (this dogged him all last season) but that Strickland said he would be back Wednesday… . LB Akeem Dent is bothered by a hip pointer. It’s pretty painful but otherwise CMR said Dent would just “have to suck it up.” They’re going light the next couple of days so he should be OK… .
Dress rehearsal for Georgia Southern at stadium is going to be on Thursday. So the practice for the dress rehearsal is going to be tomorrow. This will be a lot of run through in shorts and no pads. So not much competing for positions the next couple of days. Lineups are pretty much set at this point… .
Lots of scout work on Georgia Southern: Richt said they usually don’t begin on an opponent until 10 days out but they started on the Eagles two weeks out because they are “so different” on offense and defense especially. “What we understand is they’re very similar to West Virginia [on defense], which is like a 3-5-3 or whatever. That’s not like anything we’re going to see.” … Richt said last year they did a lot of QB run but thinking it’ll be more pass-oriented out of the spread this season like coach Chris Hatcher did while he was at Valdosta State. “We’re not sure of anything,” Richt said… .
Richt said RG Bean Anderson has been getting some work at right tackle and has actually looked very good out there. Said he’ll probably get reps at both guard and tackle versus Southern and they’d reevaluate afterward. “We’re very, very unsettled” on the O-line, he said… .
HERE’S THOSE WEIGHTROOM NUMBERS I PROMISED:
Top three for the various disciplines are: Bench press — DT Jeff Owens (520 pounds), OG Bean Anderson (500), FB Brannan Southerland (475); Back squat — OG Tanner Strickland (700), OT Kante Tripp (645), Southerland (635); Power clean — LB Dannell Ellerbe and FB Shaun Chapas (400); Southerland, LB Darius Dewberry, TB Richard Samuel (387)… .
Power index (pound-for-pound strongest): CB Bryan Evans (6.50), **CB Prince Miller (6.48), FS Reshad Jones (6.37); Total lifts — Strickland 1,535 pounds, Southerland 1,497 and Owens 1,490.
For total team perspective: The 2008 team has 36 players that can bench 400 or more pounds, which ties for 2005 as its most ever… . They have 40 players that back squat more than 500 pounds, which is second only to the 2005 team’s 46… . 61 players can power clean 300 or more. That’s nearly three times as many as they had in 2002 (27).
That’s all for tonight. ‘Til tomorrow… .

The pre-season ranking is given to someone, but to keep it, to Own it we will have to EARN IT… every week.
Some years there are teams that can’t honestly say that they earned it with the schedule that they played. With our schedule, if we keep it we will definately have to earn it.
I swear that I don’t mean this as an insult to Ohio State, but if we make it through our schedule and happen to meet up with OSU in Miami, we will have faced five or six better teams in our regular schedule and SECCG.

Tybee, i would bet my donkey that the blackout will be in Jax. No way UT, we have to beat a team first or be in a bowl game for the blackout. UT has had our number the last two years, no way we blackout in Athens. UF is howling about the celebration and how they want payback. They had 3 and a half quarters and could not do it. I just watched my copy of the game last weekend. They scored a toucdown after the penalty. They were ahead by three points at one time. But they could not hang on and the Dawgs took it to them. Only because Tebow was hurt, what many people do not know is that Tebow was trading jerseys with defensive players and playing both sides of the ball. He was hurt and that is why we scored 42 points on their defense. If Tebow had not been hurt, their defense, with Tebow, would have won the game. Dang….

Hey Gamecock Henry-
The Dogs don’t have such high expectations put on them by the media and fans because of how they started last season. Even the most ardent Georgia supporter will admit that losing to South Carolina and subsequently UT was a low point of the Richt tenure. I can sort of understand losing to UT but to lose to SC, the way we lost (our offense was anemic) is inexcusable. The reason the Bulldog nation is so excited is the character that GA showed in getting up off the mat after the UT loss and moving forward. We closed the season with 7 straight wins including a dismantling of a much ballyhooed Hawaii team. You see, over here in Georgia we like to measure a team by its actual performance on the field for a season of football, not just in a single game. After Georgia played down to their opponents in losing to SC and (a far superior to SC) UT, they went on to a somewhat glorious season. What did the gamecocks do? They lost to LSU, Vandy, UT, Arkansas, Florida, and Clemson. You lost to freakin Vandy, way to build on that momentum dude. The gamecocks are aptly named, they like to strut around an crow but when it comes to real accomplishments they are just little p*** chickens. Come back and post when you win something, anything, a conference championship, even a division championship, hell how bout your state championship? Clemson seems to have your number. Till that happens shut the f*** up.

Oh wait, you have to work and you and your union goons have run all the good jobs out of Ohio to Asia. If we don’t do something quick to stop the flow of disgruntled yankees into our great state our football teams will begin to be overated has beens like Ohio State. I’m praying Georgia makes it to the national championship game this year because if Ohio State wins 8 games in that sorry confernce of yours the bias of the polls will put them into the game against our dogs. We’ll see who the real football confernce is then. BTW what is the Big 10’s bowl record in BCS games. Save you the trouble, its 8-9 (in other words losing) while the SEC is 11-4 and leading the list of major confernces (Mountain West has played and won one game giving them a 1.000 winning percentage). To the Ohio State Buckeye fan, lets be realistic here the Bucks are 0 for against SEC opposition and the main reason for their numerous appearances in the BCS title game is the fact that they play in the Big 10 conference which has little to offer when it comes to stiff competition. As for AJ I can’t wait to see him step on the field at Sanford Stadium I think he is going to be the real deal at WR. I have a feeling this year is going to be quite special for Dawg fans like myself getting to Miami to beat the Buckeyes will be more than icing on the cake.
