UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

No. 1: Harder place to finish than start

Consensus No. 1. That’s one heck of a note for Georgia.

It was a big deal when the Bulldogs were tabbed the preseason top team by the coaches. It’s an even bigger deal that that they’re No. 1 in both major polls. I have to admit I was surprised when the writers seconded that vote in the AP poll over the weekend. These are, after all, some of the same writers that picked the Dogs second to Florida in the SEC East at Media Days last month.

But that wasn’t the main thing. Sure as the world I thought the media masses would take into account preseason injuries and the schedule and drop Georgia down a peg or two. By the way, I should interject here that no AJC employees vote on the AP poll. A bunch of us used to vote on that and the Heisman Trophy and other things but stopped voting on all polls and awards shortly after the AP poll became a part of the BCS formula. Of course, it isn’t anymore but we still stay away from that stuff just the same.

So anyway, the poll came out and Georgia was No. 1 in AP, too, and the die has been cast on the 2008 season. There’s really only two ways for the Dogs to go from here: Either it will be the greatest season ever — considering the expectations and the schedule, et al — or short of playing in the BCS title game, a colossal disappointment.

I’m not going to get into whether I think they can do it or not. We have plenty of eloquent columnists that get paid to do that. But you probably won’t be surprised to know that very few preseason No. 1s finish the season with that ranking.

In fact, according to the AP, out of the 57 polls it has produced since 1950, only 10 preseason No. 1s went on win it all. That’s 17.5 percent, or 1.75 chances out of 10. By the way, the ones that managed to go wire-to-wire are: Southern California (2004), FSU (1999), Florida State (1993), Oklahoma (1985), Alabama (1978), Oklahoma (1975), Oklahoma (1974), Oklahoma (1956), Michigan State (1952) and Tennessee (1951). You’ll note that coach Mark Richt was was on the staff of the two FSU teams that did it.

So that’s just some food for thought going forward. Grab onto something folks because I can promise you it’s going to be on wild and crazy ride this season. We’ll be with you every step of the way.

The Knowshon Zone

I don’t know much about its genesis but you’ve for to check out the new fan site for Knowshon Moreno called The Knowshon Zone. Pretty simple really but let me know what y’all think… .

Tate gives up football

According to the Cartersville Daily Tribune, prospect Donavan Tate, the son of former Georgia standout Lars Tate, has given up football to concentrate on his baseball career. He’s supposedly a top 10 draft candidate in baseball. I’m sure it was a tough decision for the kid. I always think of George Lombard when I hear about these kinds of things… .

Trouble in Gatorland?

Real interesting “podcast” from the Miami Herald reporter that covers the Florida beat. At the paper’s sub-site known as Gator Clause Joseph Goodman states flat out that Percy Harvin is a bad team guy and blames him as the instigator of a recent sideline fight with teammate Chris Rainey. Listen for yourself… .

Eyeing No. 120

Great story in the New York Times about a guy that has seen all 119 Division I-A teams play in person. He plans to make it 120 when Western Kentucky moves up in 2009… .

Behind the curtain

You probably always hear those of us covering Georgia mention the name Claude Felton. Well the Bulldogs’ Hall of Fame sports information director was recently honored at an event in Augusta and the Augusta Chronicle chronicled it. Pretty much anybody in the business will tell you Claude’s the best.

Chip,

Joseph Goodman is a BIG mIami fan who somehow covers the Gators for the Herald. If you look at his history even just this season on back to an incident with Chris Rainey in HS, Goodman has constantly tried to make the Gators look bad with made up innuendo.

It’s the same that if the girl for the AJC who went to UF covered UGA and constantly made up stuff that fans know better than to be true.

You really shouldn’t give Goodman any credence..

A “collossal dissapointment” Chip? If the Dawgs fall short of the BCS title I’m sure you’ll do your best to portray it as such, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Surely as the Georgia beat writer you’ve heard Mark Richt say on NUMEROUS occassions that the SEC championship is the #1 goal, or were you just not listening? There are many wonderful things this team can accomplish this year short of a national title, especially with this difficult schedule that you can’t shut up about. An SEC Championship would be an amazing achievement. Even without an SEC championship, if this team wins 11 or more games they will have accomplished something. A collossal dissapointment? You are unbelievable dude.

The fisrt game will be a good indicator of the dawgs season against Ga. Southern. A few streaky good plays here and there both on offense and defense. UGA will still play to the level of GSU with some lackluster play. I see a 38-21 game with the dawgs pulling away late.

Henry,

Your a frickin’ bozo. Yes, you guys beat us with defense, but did you consider that you also did it with a veteran quarteback. Your QB situation is a joke right now and I don’t care how many defensive starters you have coming back, you guys will be lucky to get into field goal range. What is with you guys? You’ve never been relevant in football and this isn’t the year it begins. Good luck trying to figure out how to make excuses for Spurrier not finding his groove on offense. Maybe we should see if the ACC and the SEC would like to make a trade Clemson for S.Carolina. You guys might actually be a contender over there. What a joke!

The UGA people whined and begged so much late last year that they got their wish. Everybody is voting them number one. They would have been better off flying under the radar the last 8 months and into September. It’s going to take a lot of talent and character to STAY number one. I don’t think they have it in them. They will get the “DAWG in head lights” look at least twice this season.

Maryland Dawg…. I remember a few years back when the dawgs had the Mr Shockley and barely beat the Gamecocks 17 -15 in a game that Carolina could have easily one. A missed extra point and a T D called back. The dawgs knew that they barely escaped with all the self proclaimed talent that they supposedly had. UGa is a joke thinking they are #1 blowzo!!!!

Henry,

And what happened the last time we were in Columgbia? 18-0, please you guys will be lucky to duplicate last years stellar season. You should think about putting your collective passion for your football team into a more useful endeavor. If you must be reminded only Vandy and Kentucky have more losses in the conference since 1992 than your mighty cocks. Do us all a favor when your team actually breaks the .500 mark in all time winning percentages, come back to celebrate. But until then please stop wasting valuable blog space on a team that can’t comprehend tradition.

Trust me he is NOTHING like your intern. She tells the truth and doesn’t try and make a story when there is not one. You said controversy. There is no controversy. Goodman is creating one. Rainey and Harvin both said it was no big deal and no different than scuffles that happen at any teams preseason practice including UGA’s. UF has already won a National Title with Harvin so that disproves Goodman’s acertation of the “controversy”

Gamecock Henry, this hasn’t been updated since 2004, but nothing has changed. Spurrier might some day reached that pinnacle of Gamecock football history - the Outback Bowl - before he dies, but that’s the best you can hope for.

The University of South Carolina began playing football in 1892. Since then, they have had an all-time winning percentage under .500, which ranks 92nd all-time in D-1A football…only 25 programs have been worse. A few of the notable football programs who have been better than the Gamecocks include such powerhouses as: Duke, Western Michigan, Tulsa, Toledo, Navy, UAB, Central Florida, Ball St., North Texas, Nevada, East Carolina, Houston, Northern Illinois, Utah St., San Jose St., Vanderbilt, Akron, Baylor, UNLV, Kansas, and Rutgers just to name a few. This is South Carolina Gamecock football.

Since the Associated Press began ranking football teams in 1936, the Gamecocks have finished in the top 20 of the rankings only five times. Carolina has never finished in the Top 10 of a major recognized poll. South Carolina won its first bowl game 103 years after they started playing football. In over 100 seasons of football, Carolina has yet to participate in one of the “Big 5” Bowls (Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Cotton). As Carolina is set to begin this season of collegiate football, they have won 10 or more games in a single season once. Since 1892, South Carolina has had only 42 winning seasons and 52 losing seasons. This is South Carolina Gamecock football.

South Carolina has had 32 different head coaches in its storied tradition…only five of them stayed longer than 5 seasons, 21 of them have losing records. Of the 56 programs which have played more than 1000 games all-time, only four have scored fewer points than South Carolina in their schools history. This is the tradition of South Carolina Gamecock football.

Conference Play In the 50+ seasons Carolina has been affiliated with a conference, they have won that conference once…the ACC in 1969, with a 7-4 record. Since joining the SEC in 1992, Carolina has had a winning record in the conference twice (2000 and 2001). In the twelve seasons as a member of the SEC, Carolina boasts a conference record of 35-68-1…only two teams have been worse: Kentucky has 27 wins, Vanderbilt 12. Although Carolina has yet to finish in the top two of the Eastern division, they have finished last twice (1998 and 1999). Carolina has yet to win six conference games in a season. And no one should forget the fact that Carolina went two consecutive seasons without winning one conference game, not one (1998 and 1999). Carolina had an impressive string of 21 consecutive games with a loss snapped in 2000 by beating New Mexico State (then let the rest of the country know what Carolina football was all about by tearing down the goal-posts). Since 1992, only three times has any non-probation member of the conference failed to win two or more games overall in a season…South Carolina has accomplished this feat twice, Kentucky once. Since 1992, only once has a conference member failed to win a game overall in a single season…you guessed it, South Carolina. South Carolina’s all-time record versus other current conference members is even more impressive: 2-9 vs Alabama, 4-8 vs Arkansas, 1-4-1 vs Auburn, 3-18-3 vs Florida, 13-41-2 vs Georgia, 8-6-1 vs Kentucky, 2-14-1 vs LSU, 5-7 vs Ole Miss, 5-6 vs Mississippi St., 2-18-2 vs Tennessee, and 11-2 vs Vanderbilt. That’s correct, Carolina leads the all-time series against 2 SEC teams…Kentucky and Vanderbilt. This is South Carolina Gamecock football.

South Carolina vs. Others The comparison of only 12 seasons in one conference does no justice to the tradition of South Carolina football. So lets compare the Gamecocks record versus D-1A schools they have played 30 or more times: 35-62-4 vs Clemson, 13-41-2 vs Georgia, 33-21-2 vs Wake Forest, 24-27-4 vs NC State, 16-34-4 vs North Carolina, 17-24-3 vs Duke, and 20-13-1 vs Virginia. That’s correct, Carolina leads the all-time series against 2 of these 11 teams…Virginia and Wake Forest. This is South Carolina Gamecock football.

Last 10 Years But all this tradition and past records are meaningless. What is more important is the recent history. Only losers live in the past. We are in the best years of Carolina Gamecock football, and the future has never been brighter…or has it? For perspective, let’s look at the last ten years…Carolina is coming off another losing season, the 6th in the last 10 seasons. Overall record since Lou Holtz became Head Coach is 27-32 (.458). Since 1994 they are 50-64. Remarkably, Carolina has finished in the Top 25 twice in the last 10 seasons and been won all three bowl games in that span. But before you get too excited, remember these are the only 3 bowl games they’ve EVER won. The three seasons they’ve allowed the most points all came within the last 10 years. This is South Carolina Gamecock football.

The 2002 season marked a significant time in South Carolina Gamecock football history. On November 9, South Carolina was defeated by Arkansas giving South Carolina their 500th loss in history. Currently there are 16 members of the elite “500 Club”, five of them with better win percentages than the Gamecocks (Virginia, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Kansas, and Rutgers). In the middle of the season, the Gamecocks were within 1 game of reaching .500 winning percentage at 489-490-44. What would they do? Could USC reach the elusive benchmark of minimal mediocrity? No. They lost five straight to close the season at 5-7 and miss the post season by one game. This is South Carolina Gamecock football.

The Gamecocks fell to 0-9 the last two years in games that could’ve gained them a bowl bid. The final defeat was a humiliating trouncing at home to their arch-rival Clemson 63-17. Many records were set or tied in the “rivalry” game including most points scored by a team. Coach Holtz said afterwards that he’s “embarrassed like I’ve never been before”…

This is South Carolina Gamecock Football.

Finally back where I can read and post on the best board on AJC.com…. sucks when work gets in the way.

Chip - great call on George Lombard. I played HS Football the same time as him and faced him a few times at camps. That dude was SICK. Frankly, I can’t blame a kid for sticking to baseball. Much better long term quality of life if you can make it in the bigs.

One more for you Chip - interesting read on Harvin. Have you seen anywhere in your research online about Percy’s health? I am hearing from some UF friends who are more realistic that fanatical, that they think he is not right. That the leg/foot injury might be one that follows him all season. You have any thoughts?

Thanks….

Greg, you left out two other significant facts about South Carolina Football. It is the place coaches who have won national championships go to fade into oblivion. That started with Pepsodent Paul Dietzel, continued with Lou Holtz, and is likely to continue with Steve Spurrier.

The other thing is South Carolina has the most delusional fans in the world. They crow and cackle like they are world beaters before every season and then wind up losing their cockadoodledo during the season.

Chip- Dawgbone.com referenced the Orange and Blue Hue.com article titled Delusional Bulldogs. Want to get going on your FU hate for the year? Read what the arrogant Sweet Ole Boys wrote! You will no longer be critical of Chip’s articles(which rarely needs criticism, but does have some thoughtful blogs).

Folks, don’t let kids pull your chain on this blog. Let’s put something of value on our Dawgs on these pages like info on other teams and our players. With that in mind, I want to start by asking that we don’t let idiots take over our blog by replying to kids who stir the pot. I happen to respect the hell out of So.Car. for having a great defense that stopped us and won the game last year. They gambled with their game and won by moving around AS STAFF WAS UNDER THE CENTER. They got away with it once, but not this year. Brinkley has been a load on defense for 3 yrs. The guy is a great player and plays best against us. Respect him and watch closely what our offense does to handle him this yr. Spurrier WILL play Garcia. His inconsistency may be used to confuse our defense and he is the only qb capable of athleticism that can keep us off balance, but if you have bought into Spurrier’s “Please don’t throw me in the Briarpatch” routine with Garcia then don’t be surprised. Spurrier will throw any and every thing at us that he can.

A team that many bloggers don’t know about(according to the blogs I see) is ASU. You can read about qb Carpenter and Coach Ericson without my adding to it. However you should know that they have a tradition of winning football dating back to the time of Coach Frank Kush when they were in the WAC. One team had three players in the top 10 of the Heisman voting. The qb, Danny White, rb Green and a wide receiver whose name I forget. All went to the NFL including the receiver’s son who went to the NFL later. Kush trained the team at Camp Tontozona that is still used today. Their conditioning is done on a hill of sand at temps exceeding 100F because they often play at night when the temp is above 100F AT GAME TIME. Conditioning at high temps is required when you go to the desert early in the season. My point is that they have a proud football history, are second to USC in their Coach’s second season and trained to play under daunting conditions. This is not news to UGA’s staff, but it may be to fans. Do not equate the Sun Devils with a weak conference(in our eyes). Do not diss this team like we will storm into THEIR stadium and impress them with our ranking. That’s a sure way to get their fans riled up to a high crowd noise where we make offensive mistakes because you can’t hear the signals. UGA’s depth may be a saving grace in that oven. I hope we still have it when we play them. Knowing your enemy is required to defeat them. Let’s get more info on this blog about our opponents. Wouldn’t you enjoy a game more by watching Kiante pick up the RedDog and bodyslam Brinkly just before he gets to Staff? Now that would be something to cheer for.

Trivia: Who were the first teams to play in the Peach Bowl? One of them is in this blog.

Gamecock Henry,

If UGA finishes 9-4 this season as you predict, that would be impressive at USC considering USC has had one 9+ win seasons since 1960 (1984 was a damn fine year).

That the difference between UGA and USC…it’s called tradition. 9 wins season at UGA is called disappointment. 9 wins at USC means the world is coming to a end.

Your record vs UGA 14-44-2 Your record vs Clemson 37-64-4

USC has had 0 appearances in the Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, Cotton

I am so glad we play Carolina so early on in the season. This is actually the game I am looking most forward to. I truly believe this is the year we lay it to them, stiflin their crappy offense (as usual), but actually scoring with reckless abandon, inlike the near past. The Dawgs will be ready this year for the game. Keep talking smack, Cocks (you’re unbelievably some of the best at it - with nothing to back it up). Less than 4 weeks, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Obviously, a preseason #1 ranking doesn’t guarantee anything & obviously, you have to be very good (in addition to a little lucky) to win the MNC. But I’m not buying the idea a preseason #1 makes it any more difficult.

So, 17.5% of preseason #1s have ended up winning it all. Of course that sounds ominous, but I’d be curious to see what the percentages were for other preseason rankings — i.e. how many preseason #2s, 3s, 4s, etc., have gone on to win it all. I would guess that when compared to other preseason positions, the preseason #1s actually fare pretty well, statistically speaking.

Point is, it’s difficult to win the MNC, regardless of your preseason ranking. But at least when you start at or near the top, you’ve got a better chance of recovering from a loss & returning to the top of the rankings.

Being #1 pre-season is fun for the fans, but I don’t think it is that much more of a target on the team’s back. If they were ranked sixth pre-season, teams would still be gearing up to play them.

If UGA can somehow lose just one game during the regular season, they should have an excellent chance to play in the SECG and get into the national title game.

If they started out the year at #6, they might not get there with 1 loss.

UGA plays several teams with equal or close talent or at tough places to play, S. Carolina, Arizona State, Bama, LSU, FL, TN, and Auburn. If they can go 6-1 against that crowd it will be quite a feat and should be enough to get in!

Chip, I don’t know how difficult is would be to research, but it would be interesting to know the stats as to which preseason ranking ended up number one at the end of the season the most. In other words, how often did number 3 preseason end up number one? Or number 5 preseason? etc etc. My guess is that preseason number one ended up number one at the end of the season more than any other preseason ranking…therefore giving the number one ranked team in preseason the best odds to end the season number one. What do you think about spinning it that way?

Chip- I had not previously read Barnhart’s story before blogging here. I see that he also is aware of the hot desert nights at ASU in the fall. My info came from watching in their stands in early seventies. Frank Kush was not only tough in training(similar to Bryant), but also was a little too physical with his players. I watched him pull one of his player’s helmet off and beat him over the head with it during a game. Alas, he did it once too often and was tossed. Can’t you see that happening in the game nowadays?

The trivia answer that no one cared about was ASU. Furman Bisher noted they played dynamite college ball and no one knew them. He personally put ASU football on the national stage by lobbying in the ajc for them to play in the first Peach Bowl. They haven’t looked back since. Do not get them confused with New Mexico or NM State. Those were the only teams that Donnan could beat consistently and also are the teams that had his winning avg. up. I don’t think he ever beat Au,Tenn, FU or Tech.

Run the table this year? I’m stupid and naive enough to believe that we may be able to beat them all. Tenn was the one that was the gnarlyest, but that was before I saw the off week scheduled before we play them. My greatest concern now is a rematch with the West Champion. That might prove to be a stumbling block, but if they are undefeated at that point, it may give more incentive to overcome.

Fu’s arrogance and egotism should give us plenty of ammo to slam their butts. Most of the fans and their coach don’t even know they were spotted two td’s in that game, the flip up into the air by an off balance Staff and awarding them 30 yds on the kickoff. And we still kicked them by 12 points. They are trying to hypnotise themselves that they lost by a fluke or a bad ref’s call. Let them delude themselves all year and we can bring them back to reality again.

Rest easy UgaVI. Urban Crier still remembers “The Dance” every day. He now will commission it into a book that will also pee the fans off all over again every time they read it. That should warm your soul into eternity. We understand it will be the world’s shortest book entitled “Florida Victories”.

I expect Georgia to finish in the top 15 because of the last few games. The early season will cost them at least 2 games with 3 at No surprise. All in all another typical uga season 2 or 3 losses. Stafford will not be an issue to any other team but an injury here or there could easily make them a 4 loss team. There will be a surprise this year in the SEC east.

All this handwringing over starting #1 is getting a bit ridiculous.

NOT starting #1 hasn’t exactly helped us FINISH #1 anytime recently. Are we actually supposed to WANT to be ranked lower?

Being ranked preseason #1 does NOT make finishing #1 any more difficult. It’s OBVIOUSLY a better place to start than anywhere else.

Shooting a basketball from halfcourt will usually fail but every missed shot does not lessen the odds of the next one going in.

The REAL issue that I think is being overlooked regarding this #1 preseason ranking is not what is Going to happen. It’s what IS happening. Mark Richt has set another standard at UGA. He now has his program in position to compete for the NC. You really can’t say he has before. MNC is a wish list item based on a lot of factors beyond his control. Getting into position is an attainable goal. He may not win it this years, but barring a total collapse, he will have them in the same spot next year. Based on what I see happening, the year after too.

Yak all you wish haters. You know it, we know it, the media knows it, oh, and you can’t stand it……….Coach has got his program right where YOU want yours to be.

thank you Josh. the past few weeks have been ridiculous.

  1. you would think we only have 5 offensive lineman on the whole team and that sturdivant was the only good one

  2. espn is nailing us and apparently we arent even a top 5 team to anyone who works there

  3. apparently we are supposed to rank teams by how they will finish from now on

  4. if you ask any hater, UGA is the crime capital of the college football scene

  5. our schedule isnt the same sec schedule of past, it now includes the new england patriots and michael phelps

  6. I THINK EVERYONE JUST NEEDS FOR FOOTBALL TO START SO THEY CAN QUIT HITTING THE REFRESH BUTTON ON ALL UGA WEBSITES FOR ONE MORE PIECE OF NEWS

Why u guys insulting the gamecock tradition? Sure we don’t have quite the tradition as a lot of teams but who the hell is Georgia? You only got 1 nc. Would you want a Bama fan beating you down over your joke of a tradition compared to them. Last I recalled Bama is no. 1 and I think we all agree on that but forget about them. What bout Tennessee. They got a much bigger tradition than Georgia. Moe ncs and conference ncs, more overall wins, they own UGA head to head competition, better alltime winning %, better bowl history, they’ve won it all in the last 10 years, etc. As far as I remember I think in overall number of alltime wins, championships, alltime winning % against other sec foes I think Georgia ranks 5th or maybe even 6th. Bama and Tenn. are 1 and 2 and then I would have to say LSU is 3rd with 3 ncs. Auburn has same number of ncs as Georgia(1) but leads Georgia head to head and I think has more bowls and higher winning % overall. That places Georgia 5th ahead of possibly Fla. Georgia holds the head to head over Fla. but the gators have 2 ncs and have won 17 of last 20 vs dawgs. Who the hell u is? U just middle of the road program not much better than us.

This may be old news but …

Arizona State still has available approximately 3,000 season-ticket packages, which include a UGA ticket. If tickets remain after the conclusion of ASU’s season-ticket sales, those can be purchased on a single-game basis. If available, those tickets would go on sale Sept. 9.

All this “target on the back” talk is absolutely ludicrous. Anyone spouting this nonsense, including Mr. Chip Towers, has never played a sport in their life. So you’re telling me Georgia’s opponents would want to win the game LESS if Georgia were ranked #2? They would be LESS focused on the task at hand if Georgia were ranked oh, lets say #5? If rankings are so meaningless, why do that have such a huge impact on the pysche of the game? I submit that they don’t. I submit that a football team wants to beat its opponent no matter where they are ranked. I submit that it is hard to finish #1 whether you start at #1, #3, #20, #119. You can pick any ranking you want to and it will be damn hard for that team to finish #1. The odds are stacked against EVERYBODY. The odds are not stacked against Georgia anymore than they are any other team. Winning championships is hard. That’s what makes it so great. If anything Georgia is in a BETTER position than everyone else because it control’s its own destiny. Once again another absolutely laughable blog out of Chip Towers. I expect no less.

Some interesting analysis of pre-season AP rankings in the BCS era: The number 1 ranked team has gone on to win the BCS championship game twice. The number 2 team has won the championship game 3 times. The other victors were ranked 10, 19, 13, 14, and 7. So, 5 out of the 10 years of the BCS, the preseason 1 or 2 team went on to win the MNC. The other half of the time a sort of unheralded team came from less prestigious ranking to win the MNC. I find it interesting that the preseason 3, 4, 5 slots have never translated into a BCS champion.

Looking at the teams that have made it into the BCS game and lost, four were preseason number 1s and three more were preseason number 2s. The remaining teams were ranked 13, 4, and 11.

So, historically 12 of the 20 teams that have played in a BCS title game began the season with an AP ranking of either 1 or 2. Further, 6 of those were ranked number 1 and 6 were ranked number 2. After that, only 2001 Nebraska was ranked in the top 5 (they were 4) preseason.

It is easy to say that number 1 preseason teams haven’t faired well, but in six out of the 10 years of the BCS, the number 1 preseason team made it to the BCS championship game. Also, in six out the ten years the number 2 preseason team made it to the BCS title game. The game hasn’t been played enough time to establish a real statistical significance, but clearly the preseason 1 and 2 ranking correlate with appearing in the BCS game when compared to the rankings of other teams that have played in the game. Preseason 4, 7, 10, 11, 14, 19 teams have each appeared once. The lucky preseason ranked 13 team has appeared in the game twice.

Below is the list of teams that made the BCS title game along with their preseason AP ranking:

1998 – Tennessee(W) 10, Florida State(L) 2 1999 – Florida State(W) 1, Virginia Tech(L) 13 2000 – Oklahoma(W) 19, Florida State(L) 2 2001 – Miami(W) 2, Nebraska (L) 4 2002 – Ohio State(W) 13, Miami(L) 1 2003 – LSU(W) 14, Oklahoma(L) 1 2004 – Southern Cal(W) 1, Oklahoma(L) 2 2005 – Texas(W) 2, Southern Cal(L) 1 2006 – Florida(W) 7, Ohio State(L) 1 2007 – LSU(W) 2, Ohio State(L) 11

Henry-

That is, without doubt, the best post I’ve ever read here in response to some lame-brain, non-thinking, non-reasoned post by a deluded fan. I mean, it’s great to love your team and all, and SC usually plays their absolute best against the Dogs, but they really do need a tast of reality. I was born and raised in Atlanta, went to UGA. Lived in SC for 3 years and you would think that SC had the greatest football tradition in the South to listen to the fans over there. The reality is that they generally have been mediocre through the years. Good work man!

PRACTICE UPDATE

Just walked in from the sunny and hot Woodruff Practice Fields. The Bulldogs were really getting after it today. Not that they don’t usually but there was just an vibe of urgency in the air. The offensive and defensive lines were competing pretty intensely as were the wide receivers and TEs against the DBs and LBs right before they chased us out at the end of period 4. Coach Richt actually chased some photographers away from shooting the O-line as they went over play after play in rapid fire. Heard Richt holler as they moved into offense vs. defense portion, “shows how well you know it. Show us how perfectly you can execute the plays.” They’re obviously reviewing the practice video very intently now to determine who’s going to play… .

Some observations:

Caleb Green in green: The ballyhooed tailback was in a non-contact green jersey and jogging around the practice field. Apparently a tight hammie but not a good time to be sidelined while the offense is getting down to the nitty-gritty, IMHO… .

On that note, far fewer players in green overall. I didn’t count them because, frankly, I’m getting tired of counting green jerseys and you can never be sure if you missed some… . Suffice it to say there will be far fewer every day as they get closer to the first game… .

One greenie that has to be disappointing for coaches is *RFr. OL Chris Little. * He’s limping around pretty significantly and riding a stationary bike while his O-line colleagues were going at it 120 yards away. The USA Today first-team high school All-American may end up being all world but he’s certainly off to a slow start here …

FB Brannan Southerland had a CT scan — slang is Cat-scan — today. Won’t know the results ‘til he sees his doctor Wednesday but he seems to feel good about his rehab… .

Trinton Sturdivant, was working out hard in the weight room during practice and seemed in good spirits. He undergoes surgery Aug. 26… . .

Tavarres King and Michael Moore both made really nice catches while I was watching. The Dogs have a good-looking group of wideouts if you ask me. Have to see if it will translate under the lights.

All you beloved Georgia brothers and sisters: can you believe what these Carolina idiots write? And I have to live with them!! On the one hand, they make weak attempts to diminish our accomplishments and tradition, then they go orgasmic when they imagine winning a game against us (.233 winning percentage).

I watched just a few minutes of the replay of last year’s game between UGA and SC, and in just those few minutes I saw a fumble by SC nullified by a shift penalty, a fumble by SC that luckily bounced right back up to the player and enough dropped passes by UGA to last a season. If THOSE two teams played 10 times, UGA would win 9. This year in Columbia the score may be 9 to 0 or 90 to 9, but Georgia will win it, no doubt whatsoever.

“It’s Hard To Finish No.1” the AJC headline announces.

I guess that is why only 1 of the 119 Division 1A teams accomplish it each year.

The point is, if you don’t set the NC as a goal and try to accomplish it, you will never attain it.

I’ve spoken upabout a regional, or geographical, bias in the polls more than once. I’m surprised to find that the bias exists within the SEC’s media in regard to the AP poll. Given their votes in the Conference poll, it stands to reason that more than a few of the voters in the AP poll had Florida ranked ahead of UGA. Incredible. Our own Conference’s media is damaging the Dawgs hold on the top spot. Go figure.

And is there some savant who can tell me (us) what preseason rank (by number, of course) has ended up as AP Nat’l Champs the most? Second most? I would ask the same about the Coaches Poll, but that’s a bit too much to hope for. If anybody knows, please enlighten me. Thanks guys. And Go Dawgs!

And I believe UGA has reached the talent level now where they should be expected to contend for the NC every year. As long as that respect is there nationally, any ranking in the top 5 is fair by me. If the Dawgs win’em all, it won’t really matter in the final analysis. Take one game at a time and these guys should be OK.

You know… I’m just starting to get a bit of a feeling about C. King that I hope doesn’t turn out to be on target.

First, I wondered a bit when I heard Coach Richt emphasizing the #2 tailback spot being wide open even BEFORE camp began (he seemed to go out of his way a couple of times to make that point). Then, I was surprised to hear that true freshman R. Samuel was getting as many snaps as King in scrimmage (even considering Samuel is obviously gifted). And now the green jersey thing… I’m just starting to get a feeling that King may not end up where a lot of folks thought he would. (i.e. will he be more Robert Edwards or Jasper Sanks?) We’ll see. Anyone else want to comment on this?

Any of you Carolina idiots who are still reading…

Here’s what UGA’s “regional program” has done since Richt arrived.

2001: 8-4 2002: SEC champs, finished #3 in both polls 2003: finished #6 in one poll and #7 in the other 2004: same as 2003 2005: SEC champs/#10 finish in both polls 2006: 9-4, beat VT in bowl game 2007: Sugar Bowl champs/#2 in one poll and #3 in the other

Top 3 2 of the past 6 years and Top 10 5 of the past 6 years. Our “bad” years under Richt were 8-4 and 9-4…which would be dream years for Cocks.

One final thought. Pete Carroll started as USC(the real one) in 2001, same year as Richt started at UGA. Carroll is 76-14 at SC and Richt is 72-19 at UGA. Not much difference, right? You idiots are always bragging about how tough the SEC is to somehow compensate for your annual ineptitude so wouldn’t logic tell you that Richt’s 72-19 record in the SEC is more impressive than Carroll’s 76-14 record at SC. Yeah, I thought so. Some regional power we are…one you’ll never be in your wildest dreams. But you’ll still have “16-12” to jerk off to until the next time you beat us in 5 or 6 years(if you’re lucky….again).

A little RATIONALITY to go with all the hype about how hard it is to win when you start #1:

Over the last 19 years (According to stassen.com), teams with the following preseason consensus ranking have finished #1 the following number of times:

1 - 3 2 - 5 3 - 2 4 - 3 5 - 0 6 - 1 7 - 0 8 - 0 9 - 1 10 - 1

Bottom line: The only preseason ranking more likely than #1 to result in a national championship is #2.

AltamahaDawg,

Perhaps mentioning Robert Edwards was a poor choice - I don’t know much about his recruitment story. I was trying to think of one of the most recent “great” tailbacks at UGA. My question was whether King will go the way of one of the “greats” or one of the “never-lived-up-to-potential” types (like Jasper Sanks).

I’m hoping for the former.

This is one of the more entertaining blog threads I’ve read in awhile. The “This… is South Carolina Football” post waaay up top was not only eye opening, but hilarious in the context of the SC poster. I’m a stat head, but really didn’t know how truly futile the c** program has been.

Granted, Spurrier is a different animal, and we did get beat at home last year… I know the Brinkley Boys. I’d put them right up there with Dannell and Rennie as far as LB’s, so we best be prepared…

… but after we take care of Southern… has anyone looked at the stats on the QB at Central Michigan? He’s the Tebow of the MAC. USA Today did a half page on him… and they had a winning record last year, and I THINK (without double checking) that they beat a BCS conference team in their bowl last season.

We talk about “prove it” and “one game at a time”, but it seems clear there is no way Southern beats us… but please folks, don’t sleep on a trap game like C. Michigan. It’s not a gimmie. CMR, Chip and anyone who follows this will tell you the same…

THEN we can extract our revenge on the Gamecocks, hopefully setting up College Gameday in Tempe on September 20th…. because I’m taking the trip. Gobble up those ASU season tickerts if you can. You can sell back the rest of the game tickets at legal face value and not spend what you would to park a mile away from the hedges at the Bama game the following week.

CHIP You know Munson will fret over the Freshman kicker, and I heard CMR gave him a day or so? How good is Walsh… really? Many of these games may come down to his leg… I figure that’s at least as important as Caleb King or freakin’ Chris Little.

I was the 1 here who put up http://www.KnowshonZone.com , not you Chip Towers.

As for you didn’t think the team ranked Number 1 in 23 different polls would be Number 1 in the AP Poll - duh.

As for AP Poll Preseason Number 1 teams not getting there at the end of the regular season, 5 of the last 6 (All but Southern California last year), have in fact ended the regular season Number 1 too.

All I want to do is to be able to get into The Game. I think we might go 12-2 this season, and starting Number 1, we have a chance to be in The Game at 12-2. We’ll see.

According to you, Georgia can’t hit in baseball last year (idiot), Dannell Ellerbe is not a Star (moron), and you think UGA should not be Number 1 today in the AP Poll we finished Number 2 in last season and lost no one from when we played the Number 7 SoS last season and this year’s schedule seems to match up as at least Number 7 SoS this up-coming season.

But, then again, according to the AJ-C Georgia Tech did NOT lose 6 Football Scholarships 2007-2008 for Academic Cheating NCAA Major Infractions Database Probation.

And, oh yeah, according to the AJ-C too, “wouldn’t it be something if Georgia Tech ruined UGA’s Number 1 Ranking by beating UGA this season.”

The AJ-C does more to MAKE THE NEWS than report on it than any rag in the world with your sensationalism.

Now, why don’t you admit you read my post yesterday morning, and promptly clicked on it and now report on it as Knowshon Zone.

I’ll take our chances in The Game. Just get us in it. Harder place to finish the regular season Number 1 than Start it, like the 2 aren’t related at all with in fact 5 of the previous 6 Number 1 AP Poll Preseason in fact ending the regular season Number 1.

Spurrier and Fulmer were both at their peak during those years and let’s not forget that Donnan was the one who had to clean up Ray Goff’s mess… Mark Richt knows that he took over a program that was not far from making it big. Donnan left a ton of talent(David Greene) and a fundamentally sound group of players. Josh you are so right. Pass the valium.

Like many of our brethren in the poultry nation, I also have the game in Columbia circled. I think the players do too, even if they cannot say so. That game was the the one that got away last year. Tennessee steamrolled our boys… but we gave that one to Spurrier. I think Mike Bobo learned something that day, because it looked to my eyes like he blinked in the gaze of the ole ball coach’s poker face… Bobo probably has it circled too. I cannot wait. But lest we get ahead of ourselves, Coach Richt and the boys have some tough (and underated) teams to deal with before that. Let’s just hope that our top two tailbacks can make it to the first game!

Its interesting that S.C. fans would claim they’re going to beat us and send us to a 9-4 “disappointing” season. If the Gamecocks went 9-4 there would be parades in Columbia.

Sorry Dog Nation, but I have been doing some thinking and there is absolutely no way we can win a national title in 2008.

We just don’t have the horses or coaching to get us there. I see 8-4 at best with losses to AU, LSU, USC and UT.

It was a good run and let’s enjoy the cover of SI while we can.

8-4 at best, and I suspect Columbia will take it to us again. We just cannot beat the Old Ball Coach.

UT stepped on our face, and only by the good graces and manners of Fulmer was it not worse. They could have run up the score.

Can anyone out there confirm or deny that CMR is talking with Miami about taking over for Randy Shannon next year? There are rumors flying that CMR was using the UGA program as a “stepping stone” to get back to the Miami program.

UGH!

Well that confused me even more. Is “great” good or bad?

I’d say King has had an entire RS year to prepared, in which he appearantly was good enough that he almost played against UF, has been praised by the staff during the offseason, and had a very nice G-day game performance. I wouldn’t read too much negative into tht fact that he has been nursing a slight injury during camp, like so many others. He isn’t likely to be a fizzle.

Well, that was pretty good timing I have to admit Mr.(or Ms.) poser.

I just have to say that the title of this blog is asinine.

So you are saying that its easier to start off pre-season No. 1, before any games have been played, than it is to end up No. 1, after 13 games? Really? No sh!t.

AltamahaDawg,

FSU has a better chance of obtaining CMR’s services than Miami does. Miami is a he11-hole, and a terrible place to raise kids. Tallahassee is better for raising a family, but the football program is in a mess, and CMR doesn’t want that headache. I am sure they will come after him hard when the “coach in waiting” experiment with Jimbo Fisher doesn’t pan out, but who wants to follow a legend like Bobby Bowden? It doesn’t work out more often than not….see Ray Goff….In addition to CMR stating on numerous occasions that he was going to stay at UGA “as long as they will have me”, it appears that his brother-in-law, Dallas Cowboy’s QB Brad Johnson, will be joining the staff as a QB coach after his contract is up in Dallas and he retires. Brad Johnson has already sold his Tallahassee property, and currently has purchased a home in Athens. He either plans to retire in Athens, or he plans on working for CMR. The rich will get richer as far as coaching goes….starting in 2009.

What I’ve learned about the MSM is they don’t like being proved wrong. Matter of fact, by the appearance thereof, they’ll attempt to alter reality in order to preserve face, ya know, the 1st Amendment thing to say or print whatever fits the template created…All that aside, to get to the BCSNCG, UGA doesn’t have to run the table, but they do have to win the SEC. In 2007, UGA was, without a doubt, the second best the SEC had to offer by season’s end. They were rewarded by earning a Sugar Bowl bid. The sad part was their opponent was swept into that game by virture of a season record that looked good on paper, but couldn’t stand up to a 2 loss SEC team that literally cleaned their clock. When it comes down to BCS matchups, they must do better then that…The Colt was no Joe Willie.

Wow Greg ……what a great write up on Gamecock football! You failed to mention though that since 1988 UGAs rcord over the Gamecocks is only 11-7. UGA being such a power house you would think that the series wouldnt be so close as of late. Hmmmmm…maybe thats why some sport pundits on espn and others are still skeptical about UGA. Greg all I know is that the lowly Gamecocks won 16 -12 and held UGA witout a T D ouch… Spurrier owns the dawgs which you failed to mention as well. The Gamecocks owned the dawgs last year and will own them again this year too.

I really hate to be mean, but , Give me a break, South Carolina needs to be a (10-2) team in the SEC for at least 50 something years to be seriously considered a worthy threat. They will never measure up to the LSU’s,Ala.’s ,Auburn’s,Tenn’s,UGA’s,Fla’s in the awesome SEC- SAS or not!
