UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Don’t forget about Jones on O-line

It’s getting late in the week. Time to empty out the notebook… .

Lost in all the talk of about how Georgia is going to deal with loss of Trinton Sturdivant at left tackle is the development of some of the young inside guys.

You’ve heard a lot recently about true freshman Cordy Glenn of Riverdale and how he’s come on lately to take over the top spot at right guard. But don’t forget about Ben Jones, the freshman from Centreville, Ala., who enrolled back in January. Coach Mark Richt and his staff certainly haven’t. Richt was bragging on Jones after practice yesterday.

“Practicing very hard, knows what to do,” Richt said. “He’s competing very well. I just think he’ll play. Chris [Davis] we know is going to play. Ben will play.”

It sounds like it’s the coaches’ hope that Jones will eventually start at center.

“Ben’s probably more comfortable at center,” Richt said. “I think center is more natural for him and guard would be a more natural transition for Chris if we needed to do that. I’m not talking starting five necessarily. But let’s get him in there and let him play and maybe bump Chris out a little bit as we go. I think Ben has proved that he’s ready to play.”

ELLERBE’S SI DECISION

Georgia linebacker Dannell Ellerbe was especially thrilled about being on the cover of the Sports Illustrated with teammates Knowshon Moreno and Matt Stafford. But it almost didn’t happen.

Richt explains.

“All summer long he had this goatee and in the summer we don’t have the [facial]hair rule,” Richt said. “But if you’re going to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated we want you in the grooming regulations. I think he resisted it a little bit and [sports info] came to me about it. I said, ‘Well, Dannell doesn’t have to cut off the hair off his chin if he doesn’t want to but if he doesn’t cut the hair off his chin, he’s not going to be on the cover of sports illustrated. So it’s up to him.

“He showed up the next day all clean-shaven with a big smile on his face. That’s pretty exciting for him.”

And for his family. Ellerbe is from North Carolina but he has a lot of family in New York. The SI covers were regional so those folks got editions with Ohio State on the cover. So Ellerbe said he is desperately seeking extra copies to send to his uncles and aunts up north.

“I got a copy, but I need about 50 more though. Everybody I know wants one,” he said.

Speaking of Ellerbe, he’s being held out of contact because of a shoulder injury but Richt said it isn’t serious.

SEC IS INJURY CENTRAL

No doubt you’ve taken notice that the injury bug hasn’t been limited to Georgia.

In fact, it has been far worse at the first major football-playing university down from Georgia Tech on I-75. (That’d be the University of Florida, not Georgia State. The Panthers aren’t quite D-I yet).

Anyway, the Gators have had five - count ‘em, five! - players suffer season-ending ACL injuries so far. There is a good write-up about it that quotes coach Urban Meyer in the Tampa Tribune.

In addition to losing safety Aaron Savage for the season to a knee injury, Auburn has encountered more injuries to the offensive line, secondary and wide receivers. There was a breakdown in the Dothan Eagle this week.

MEYER ON DISCIPLINE

Those of you pining some more information on Meyer’s decision to let lineman Ronnie Wilson back on the team - despite charges of discharging an AK-47, punching and spitting on a person and getting caught with pot - there’s an in-depth piece on it on Sports Illustrated’s website. I understand Andy Staples’ take on it and Meyer’s explanation echoes some of Mark Richt’s sentiments as far as you can’t help somebody if you kick them out the door. But Wilson’s indiscretions are pretty extreme for remaining on the football team, in my opinion. Meyer claims the kid, a starter on the national championship team, still might not play. We’ll see.

So let me get this straight, the OU Sooners kicked that kid off for cutting up on a cell phone video camara. However, Meyer is leting a kid play ” despite charges of discharging an AK-47, punching and spitting on a person and getting caught with pot”. O.o Thats quite the disparity.

Urban Meyer is starting to tread water at UF and he knows it. The SEC is proving a lot tougher than Meyer thought it to be and maybe it’s just me, but I feel a little panic setting in with Coach Meyer. He’s looking another 4 loss season dead in the eye and it scares him to death. He thought he would come into this league like a shooting star and steal the whole show. Won’t happen. Urban Meyer has lost 4 out of 5 games with top 25 competition with a Heisman Trophy winning QB as his starter. Think about that folks. Urban Meyer isn’t going to last much longer at UF.

All human beings deserves a second chance (not just in football) and the article that Andy wrote states Wilson’s indescretions but also shows what he did to make up for it. The article also stated how giving someone a second chance can be good (or bad). I think all coaches gives their players second (and even third, fourth chances). Also… not all Football programs have all saints on their team, so I don’t think we even have to have any further discussion. Ahem, ahem (you know what teams I’m talking about)

Hey please see ID…there is just one thing hilariously ignorant about your shot at UGA there my friend. Have you any idea where the infamous AK-47 incident began? It all started in a bar. So if UGA players will be at the bar drinking their tails off, it will be in heated drinking competitions with Gator players who are better armed than the Gainesville PD.

Here is my starting O-line for game one.

Left tackle- J Davis sub V Vance

Left Guard- C Davis sub V Vance

Center- B Jones

Right Guard- Strickland sub Bean

Right Tackle- K Tripp sub C Glenn

This allows current starters to really polish their spot and allows future stars to earn their stripes. I like giving Jones the entire job at Center vs GA Southern and letting him make his rookie mistakes vs DII. If this line-up works, it just helps us more when Boling returns.

Chapel Bell: In case you missed it they’re installing the refurbished, 800-pound bronze bell in the newly-rebuilt tower tomorrow morning. A ceremonial “first ring” will take place at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. You’ll recall that Georgia fans broke the yoke that held the bell after ringing it all night following the win over Florida. It cost $14,000 to refurbish the bell and they’ve replaced every other part. So it ought to hold up to lots of ringing this season. Our Andrea Jones did [a little update] (http://www.ajc.com/search/content/metro/stories/2008/08/13/ugabelltower.html).

Jeremy- I’m aware of the bar and AK-47 situation. Wilson shot the AK in the air…not directly at the person (he since paid his price by serving community svc, getting a degree a non-scholarship, etc) just to get back on the team. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance. My point is you guys have players carrying second-related alcohol arrests and Richt gives them a 3rd chance (suspending them for one game). Huge punishment alright (sarcasm). Second chances are nothing nowadays as I see from most programs.

Hey Milton … Your boy Dewberry has to do community svc and undergo counseling for his offseason “activities”… kinda like my boy AK-Wilson, yet Dewberry is on scholarship and suspended for 2 games. Wilson was kicked off the team then and is paying his way through college now. Yup, Richt sets the standards higher than Slurban oh right.

Au Contraire - Are you kidding me??? How can you compare property damage (destroying flower pots and knocking over trash cans) to punching someone, then spitting on them, then firing a semi-automatic weapon in public?

By reality check

August 14, 2008 3:24 PM | Link to this

You are confused “please see id”. Georgia suspends any student with second alcohol related arrests from school. That is university policy, not something the coaches decide. Donovan Baldwin has been suspended indefinitely with only one alcohol related arrest.

Clint Boling was charged but not convicted of a single alcohol related charge and he has still been suspended for a game. Get your facts straight if you want to make a serious point. You are provomg yourself to be a buffoon who doesn’t know what he is talking about.

Dewberry was not charged with a crime Au contraire. If he had been and retained an attorney there is an excellent chance he would not have been convicted. The camera resolution was inadequate to identify him. Instead he owned up to everything and is making restitution. If you are not intelligent enough to see the distinction between that and discharging an AK47 in a bar you are entitled to full membership in the buffoon club with your buddy “see id”

NC- Preston Parker (FSU) is suspended 1 game after his concealed firearm issue. Dewberry (one of six players suspended) gets 2 games after his property damage issue stemming from a bar altercation. Wilson (also bar altercation related) was kicked off the team. Do you see my point here? Suspension-keep your scholarships vs Dismissal-lose the scholarship. All programs has this types of issues. How they are handled is another thing. So dont get on your high tail on how Slurban handles his issues

Speaking of Tech’s ticket advertisements, yesterday I heard that they had sold like 275 less season tickets than this time last year. That’s surprising given the number that wanted Gailey gone and the potential Johnson brings. Maybe some of that is based on Tech’s sloppy spring game which is to be expected w/ a new coaching staff, but I think Tech will be back a few years from now. As weak as the ACC is this year they could have a strong record this year.

Speaking of those SI regional covers. Notre Dame had two different copies. The last one had Coach Wei$$, and Jimmy Clausen on it. The picture was taken by Google Earth. They tried a normal camera but had problems fitting Wei$$’s body and Jimmy’s head in the same frame. The Leprechaun was supposed be in there too, but rumor has it Charlie ate it.

Dear Urban Crier,

Thinks are going downhill in G-Ville. And understand this, The turd fans are the most spoiled fans of any fan in any sport. College or pros. They will turn on you in a second and they know you won a NC with another coaches players. Another 4-loss season and another loss to UGA and you could be in trouble. Just like Obama your arrogance shows but yet you have nothing to be arrogant about.

By Wild Bill

August 14, 2008 4:19 PM | Link to this

The only way to settle this discussion between UF and UGA would be a shoot out between Florida’s gunman and UGA’s pistol toting lineman. The thug that wrecked the hospital parking lot would have been caught, camera resolution notwithstanding. He is no hero for turning himself in. Bolling refused the alcohol test. Under state law, that is an admission of guilt. Let’s see, if I am sober, and I refuse the alcohol test, that is an admission that I am drunk, and I lose my license. That is a little like Caleb King not knowing a street was one way, and that you need a driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. I don’t believe that Richt could fix these things through prayer, so I suspect that what we have here is a little bribery and ticket fixing. The gold medal for thuggery goes to UGA. Silver to Alabama, and UF gets the bronze.

How many 19 yr olds own an AK-47, it’s an assualt rifle? I think CMR giving second chances to our guys that have bar incidnets is a lot different than Urban Liar letting this thug back on the team.

please see ID:

Just not true about players getting one game suspensions for multiple alchohol infractions at UGA. Proof:

A. Hebron a 5 star recruit was kicked off the team for a year for his 2nd alc violation, no other crime… just drinking alc.

T Chandler, starting tight end suspended from OK State game for drinking outdoor despite the fact that he was over 21 at the time.

Munzemier (spelling?) suspended for the first two games for alc.

Baldwin, kicked off the team after being suspended for a DUI and then getting in a fight. Kicked off the team forever.

Totally different story for the Gators…you act as if firing an AK47 in the air is no big deal. “he didn’t fire it AT somebody”. Well, that would be attempted murder. He deserves a 2nd chance? No, he does not. His punishment should be not getting to play Division 1 college football, period and end of story

What if the bullet accidentally hit YOUR son, daughter, friend, girlfreind, wife? and paralyzed them or killed them. Oh well, he only fired into the air. Spitting is not the end of the world, but what about the assault and the drugs.

If the guy plays a down for the Gators, that will tell us everything we need to know.

AK47 you can’t possibly be that stupid so I won’t bite on the fishy comment.

Incidentally, as a Viet Nam era Marine I am very familiar with the AK47. It handles a lot like a M-16 especially if the selector switch is on automatic but has one huge advantage. A 7.62 mm (M-16) round will fit the chamber of an AK47, but the AK47 round is slightly too large to fit the chamber of the M-16.

REALITY CHECK the AK has a “Hot” load and a kick that the 16 does not. The AK is easy to shoot and mantain but, you need more practice to stay on MARK. The 16 has less kick and stays on target easier. I like the HK 302 and Sig P226 or P228 9mm as a SIDE. You Jarheads keep your K-bar, 45 and the SEAMAN dropping you off on the beach. Me and my boys will enjoy OUR first step into the DARK NIGHT AIR.

I-DOG 20% of the team? Is that 45, 50, 60 players that still only equals 9 players of 45. That AIN’T NO BRAGGING then you just need to know what a 3 point basket is worth. Now, tell me how many players had a 4.0 in a real course of study. Any Ni&&er can sit in a classroom for an easy grade.

Logan Gray is also returning punts

Go ahead and jump out of perfectly good airplanes if that is your idea of a good time Chris. The only beach work I do is in broad daylight and involves cold beer.

POST-PRACTICE REPORT

As always, a complete report will be posted on the site separately shortly but here’s what you’ll want to know now:

As I mentioned earlier, Knowshon Moreno is returning punts in practice. I actually noticed that in a pre-practice warm-up drill the other day and thought he was just fooling around. And you may also find it interesting that quarterback Logan Gray is getting some looks on punt returns as well. Here’s the aw quotes from Richt:

On Moreno: “I think he could be pretty good at it. I’m not sure if we’ll pull the trigger or not but he’s working there.”

On if it would actually happen: “That’s Coach Fab’s call and I trust his judgment. I think he’s the best punt return and blocks coach in America so I don’t need to tell him how to do it.” …

On Moreno’s feelings: “Knowshon will do anything you ask him to do. We’re trying to get out best players ouyt there, including on special teams. And he has an aptitude for it.” …

On Logan Gray returning punts: “Logan wants to help us win. He’s the gunner on the punt team and he’s working on being a puntreturn man. He might have some other roles. He’s been working as a safety on the kickoff team. He just wants to play.

On geting Gray hurt: “A guy in those positions could get banged up where he couldn’t play QB. That’d be scary but I think we just need him to play right now.” …

Players weren’t available for interviews after the special teams-only scrimmage at Sanford Stadium, which was closed to the media, so I don’t have anything from them… .

Other stuff: Dogs are down to just two walkons and Jarius Wynn at D-end. Injuries (and a dismissal) have sidelined the rest (see notes later)… .

Brian Mimbs has looked good at punter, fellow punter Drew Butler is “much improved,” Blair Walsh is your man in PATs and FGs but they haven’t settled on kickoffs… .

That’s all for now.

We could sell more tickets, if we offered a package with all the Varsity food you could eat. Don’t laugh, it has worked for the Braves. Tickets are difficult to sell in the lower reaches of the ACC. This could be a win-win deal for everyone.

Chip great after practice comments, please school your intern on giving pithy comments. I am over the she is a Gator, tar and feather her. But her after practice reports lead much to be desired. I expect next time she will say, This just in, the number one offense was wearing red and the defense was wearing white. Stafford being a winter looked good in red but CJ Byrd should remember not to wear white after labor day.

EARN IT!! Cmon Dawgs, scream it at the top of your lungs.

Tech fan, I feel your pain. It is a total shame what Tech has to do to get butts in the seats. I guess most Tech grads leave Atlanta for parts unknown. Dawg grads go to Atlanta. You have a G on your helmet, that means Georgia, state, to me. Good luck with the spread and your new coach, till we play you.

Chip, can we get Jenna to wear a blackout bikini top for the Vol game? Enquiring minds want to know. Okay just mine. I still have not seen the Journalism Hippocratic oath on Objectivity. I would love a copy of that to join my Hall of Fame in my bar/dining room. Right next to my framed ticket of the Jan 1, 1981 UGA vs Notre Dame. You have my e-mail, I will give you my fax number.

I agree with you (again), exNFLplayer. Urban Legend is definitely talking a different game this year. But I give him credit for not shying from the expectations. Not that he’ll meet them, but he’s facing them head-on. The quotes here in Orlando are strongly worded, and he seems to believe this will be a “special” year for UF. I feel the same way, but my idea of “special” is 5 losses. That is a realistic number given the injuries that they’ve been hit with and the fact that their defense is still a huge question mark. I don’t believe Meyer realized that in the SEC every week is a rivalry game of some sort. He certainly has failed to get his teams prepared for the task lately.

Please, please get your facts straigh Mr. UGA beat writer. Ronnie Wilson did not play for the Nat’l Championship team, much less start. And, he has been kicked off the team. After a one year suspension, he was allowed to walk on. He had to go through alot to be allowed to walk on and there’s a better than even chance he’ll never see the field. I expect fans and coaches to stretch the truth, but we hold journalists to a higher level.
