UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Dogs have many options on O-line

It’s official - Bulldogs left tackle Trinton Sturdivant will miss the 2008 season with a knee injury.

So now your No. 1-ranked Bulldogs have to make a major adjustment. Obviously Sturdivant was their best option there at left tackle. I’ll be getting into this today as a followup story but what do you think is the best way for the offensive line to adsorb his loss?

The easy answer is to simply elevate Josh Davis to first team. Davis (6-6, 293, RSo.) was a very highly-touted prospect out of Jayess, Miss., but has played very little to date, perhaps because Sturdivant has been so good. Davis got Sturdivant’s reps in Monday’s scrimmage.

Another option is moving left guard Vince Vance outside to tackle. Vance (6-8, 320) came to Georgia as a tackle and repped there a lot last season but has played mainly inside. Together with Sturdivant they formed a formidable left side of the line. CMR was also talking about moving guard Clint Boling out to left tackle but Boling is suspended for the first game.

One of the best options in my opinion may be to move right tackle Kiante Tripp over to the left side. The redshirt sophomore from Atlanta is the Bulldogs’ most athletic lineman. He told me in a recent interview that he set three O-lineman records this summer: 40-yard dash (4.82 seconds), back squat (645 pounds) and power-clean lift (370). He said he was aiming for the bench and vertical leap records but didn’t get a chance to attempt them. Last time I checked that was the type of athleticism coaches are looking for at left tackle, which protects quarterback Matthew Stafford’s blind side.

I know, I know. It’s not that simple. There’s a lot more that goes into learning such an important position. But the coach Stacy Searels has 18 days to make it happen. The best thing for Georgia is it has recruited a lot of O-lineman the last couple of years so it has a lot of options. But clearly Sturdivant was the best one.

So what do you think? Devastating blow or bump in the road?

PRACTICE UPDATES COMING THIS AFTERNOON.

It’s official…He’s out for season. Mark Richt got approx. 2 years to bring in a NC; if not, he will be sweating bulletings in 2009. The season doesn’t get any easier. F*&%^K! What was CMR and Staff thinking about.

Horrible news to wake up to. I wish him a speedy recovery for his sake and for Georgia’s. That being said, our coaches seem to get the players to handle adversity well. This is the first major test of many to come, in many forms, I’m sure.

This hurts a great deal but we will be able to adjust. Someone else will step up. Hopefully it’s not a tear and he’ll be back for that tough stretch against Bama, Tenn, LSU & Fla, although the Bama game probably wouldn’t allow enough time to heal.

Losing Trinton definetly hurts. However, I think we have great coaches & depth players that we should be able to overcome this. Go with the Kiante Tripp option. He’s been doing great so far after switching from D to O. Lets not lose focus here. Chip: Heard Green re-aggravated his hip flexor again. Any more updates? Severity?

It’s a bump man. My DAWGS have great backups. We’re the best team, period. We’ve spanked Florida & we beat the best offense last year in Hawaii. Like I’ve said, we’re going all the way if I have anything to do with it.

Karma is a b***…Sturdivant ended the Gator’s Teron Sanders’ season last year with an illegal block (by diving at his knees). Has anyone confirmed that it happened during a play, or was he practicing a James Brown split maneuver for their first TD against Georgia Southern?

I have absolutely NO credible source for this. I hope beyond all hope that it is false, but I’ve read that his injury is of the Albert Hollis type severity and it is unlikely he’ll be able to play again. Again I repeat that this is just a completely unsubstantiated rumor and I’ve no credible reason to back it’s veracity. Despite that disclaimer it is not to early to pray for the young man’s speedy recovery whatever the extent of his injury.

Chip,

Can THAT much damage be done wearing a knee brace? Surely, every lineman wears the braces at all times.

I fear this is just the start of injuries that will make all of our heads hurt.

Devastating bump in the road. These things happen unfortunately, I feel for the young man far more than the program. As important as he was I believe we a couple of good options.

Green’s continued problems with the hip and the lack of Knowshon also concern me as well as we still have 3 weeks before the season opens. When will Southerland return? Let’s hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Pretty big bump in the road, in my opinion. I think Stacy Searels will figure out who is best to put over there and I think he’ll get the line together in time for the season opener. I think we’ll be ok, but we’re definitely going to be missing him this year as that is the most important spot on the OL.

Dude has a season ending and possible career ending injury….which he would have been a first day pick in the NFL and could have helped his own family financially and his grnadchildren’s grnadchildren and you are talking aobut Karma for touching a pregnant women’s stomach.

Sturdivant the same thug who was his calss president and graduated with honors from high school. He’s a kid dude. Lay off of him. Karma doesn’t have anything to do with it. It’s a part of the sport.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m devastated. Hopefully, someone else can slide into that role, but I’m much more wary about the season in general now. I was already a little bit wary anyway. I hope he has a speedy recovery, and comes back next year good as new.

Terrorizing a pregnant woman? Hardly. If there was anything at all to that story, it would have gone much further than it did. I think the woman made it up to cover why she was out so late at night where she shouldn’t have been. As much as I despise Duke, do we not remember the Lacrosse team scandal?

PTC Dawg, AMEN! The kid is hurt so stop with the classless mess & have some compassion! It’s easy to ridicule people you only read about or see in person. I think people forget the players are real people too, everyone has faults & does stuff they shouldn’t.

Trinton, may God bless at this time & as you recover.

I like Chip’s options in this order: Vance, Tripp & Davis. Unless Tripp is going to be a AA type of LT it would probably be best not to change positions around to much. This might change our O in the short term if whoever takes Trinton’s spot needs help. If that’s the case then I like the thought of going with a lot of 2 TE sets. Also we could use some of the guys moved to FB as H-backs on that side to help out. What this may mean is that the O has to be more conservative until the OL solidifies. Realistically it was going to be that way before this happened but now it might take even longer. The SC, ASU & AL games being one after the other has worried me all summer if the O is limited it could be an issue during this stretch. As the season goes on the O should gel then open up. The good news is our D is the strength of this team & hopefully can keeps games close. So early on we might have win nail bitters with old style ball control & D if so Walsh may have to deliver early. As the season goes on this will become more of a bump in the road but right now it’s hard not to think it’s devastating.

To the poster wondering why this would happen with a knee brace on: The only thing the braces are good for is providing some, not complete, protection from a blow from the side. Your knee still swivels and torques inside the brace and from the description of the damage, that’s what happened to this kid. Braces probably provide just as much psychological benefit as physical benefit to an OL.

To the “karma” dirtbags: I can only echo what some one else posted—-you will find out, sooner or later, what karma is really all about.

Best wishes for a complete recovery to Mr. Sturdivant.

No question Trinton is one of the best in college football with All-American potential, but even still one man doesn’t make a TEAM. The TEAM will have to come together and work harder to cover for our fallen comrade. That which does not kill you makes you stronger. Hopefully there won’t be any more injuries, but that is very unlikely. There will be injuries that will require others to step up which is exactly what great teams do. The DAWGZ will be fine. Get well soon Trinton. We look forward to seeing you back right away!

A loss of your best lineman is always real bad and a major concern. To win the SEC the Dawgs will have to overcome even more adversity. When we do win the SEC this year you will easily be able to tell which players stepped up their game to make this transition workable. Very good depth at OL. Lets see who grabs the brass ring.

It certainly hurts no doubt about it. First string anywhere on the field is gonna hurt but especially one of his caliber. The bad thing about that injury is it’s usually a two year process. Out one year for surgery, healing and rehab. The next year spent relearning to use it. I think of some running backs especially over the years that had that injury and their first year back on it was horrible. Production way down, then the come out of it the next year. So his will probably be similar, maybe not as noticeable if he was running the ball and scoring TD’s. I hope he’s at least able to get a medical redshirt. It sucks to lose him but I know they have some quality depth at OL and will make the right adjustments. Just think, he was a new and unexperienced player this time last year and all the question marks surrounding him and the rest of the young OL and it worked out fine so I think someone will step up. Still going to miss him though for sure. Get well TS, keep your chin up. Go Dawgs!

Anybody can come in here with comments considered by them to be funny. Injuries in contact sports is not uncommon. They happen coast to coast every day. Fans of other programs won’t be spared season enders, of which, UT has lost a DT for 2008 on an already thin D-Line. Go ahead and say he got his due. Go ahead and say it’s payback for whatever you wish. Fact is his number came up. From this Volunteer’s perspective, may Sturdivant recover for 2009 and beyond…

Thankfully, we have depth at the line this season and Sturdivant has plenty of time to live the glory days at UGA before making millions in the NFL.

As usual Gatorzone, Buzzgt and General Neyland are classy. We could stand with lots more fans like that….and that includes some so called Dawg fans too.

Tough luck on Sturdivant. Fortunately Searles is a great coordinator and I think we will be ok, if a bit thinner. Glad we are starting out with Southern and C. Michigan now.

Trinton is a super talent. Best alternative probably to move Tripp to the left side-will be and adjustment period. Has Cordy Glenn moved ahead of J. Anderson on the depth chart. Georgia has depth, Trinton will be missed, however.

Georgiadogs.com has removed the depth chart from the site, Chip could you please provide on a regular basis.

Would like o’view of the O/L by position/player - there is tremendous potential depth, question is progression.

I’m a Tech fan, but a real fan doesn’t wish injuries on anyone. I hope your O-lineman gets the right care and achieves complete recovery. This is where UGAs great recruiting classes year after year will pay off. Richt will plug another 4-star stud in there and you’ll be fine.

I think Searels will have the line performing well. There are 18 practices left and enogh talent to fill the void. I hate it for Sturdivant, but unfortunetly injuries happen in this game.

By Obnoxious Georgia Fan

August 12, 2008 12:56 PM | Link to this

Sturdivant is a great player but the effects of these types of injuries are often blown out of proportion, especially when they happen in the preseason. Chip Towers writes of a “devasting blow” to Georgia’s offense. Chris Low of ESPN writes of “ominous” signs for not only the offense, but also the entire Georgia team. That’s a big word for a guy from Knoxville. Doomsday is upon us. The seas will boil. Blah, blah, blah. Its as if Georgia will be forced to play with 10 men on offense or something. Hold on to your hats for this groundbreaking revelation: WE WILL HAVE A LEFT TACKLE THIS YEAR. I promise. Whoever he is he will be big, athletic, and well coached. I promise that too. No, he won’t be as good as Sturdivant. No, he probably won’t be an All-American. He probably won’t even be All-SEC. He’ll be good enough to start at left tackle for UGA though. This much we know for sure. And if he’s not there will be somebody right behind him who is. The sky is not falling. I repeat, the sky is not falling. Please grow a pair folks.

TE Fontaine to UGA!

By 82DAWG

August 12, 2008 1:03 PM | Link to this

Josh Davis was actually not a highly regarded prospect; he was refered to as a “project” by the recruiting “experts”. A project implies someone that, after a redshirt year, a year on special teams and a year as a backup, should be ready to contribute (in year 4). If coaches are willing to skip a few steps with Josh here, either as a redshirt Freshman he is way ahead of where he was projected or we are way reaching and in big trouble. I think Cordy Glenn might be a better option.

It is always sad to see what jerks people can be. A young man has been seriously injured and people are making light over it. I’m a Tech fan, but I hope this young man recovers quickly. I can predict any change in the weather based on a high school knee injury from 31 years ago. From a football perspective, this is a tough injury for UGA because the left tackle protects the quarterback from the blind side (if he is right-handed). Georgia has great depth, but stepping into this position is like replacing the “quarterback” of your offensive line.

You guys that are celebrating the fact that a young man got injured… well you are the lowest form of man kind on this planet! I wouldnt wish this on any one from any school. The rivalries are between the fans, not between the fans and players!

Tim Tebow is a Gator, but he is a class act!

Sturdivant is a class act who is a top notch talent. you may not be a fan of the Dawgs but to root for a player w/ season ending injury is flat out wrong!!

I hope no team in the country gets hit w/ any more injuries like this.

The one thing that helps ease my fears is that we have one of the best OL coaches in the nation, and he can get them up to speed. Better that it happened now than in the first or second game, I think. There’s still plenty of time to get the line ready.

By Lowcountry Bulldawgs

August 12, 2008 1:53 PM | Link to this

Well if there can be a silver lining to this it would be two fold. First, it was in the preseason so we can work out the details for a replacement. Secondly, if it was goingto happen at least it was again preseason so he can redshirt. This as opposed to being in the third game and then seeking the help of the NCAA(insert laugh) for a medical year.

Looking at our Two Deep depth chart I had tken for granted just how young this OL is. Every single young man is a Sophomore or Freshman. This could be a hug stumbling block to the road to a title. So many SEC teams with awesome front fours.

Fontaine is a DAWG!!! Maybe it had something to do with my constant bombing of their local newspapers. I live on the Cape (about 40min away) and my hometown team Barnstable Highusually plays Dartmouth every year. They used to be a powerhouse in the 80’s. I will, for sure, be going to Dartmouth games and I’ll be wearing my UGA gear just to remind him of the best decision he made. 82DAWG Your right, the football talent in S.E. Mass is not the greatest, but Mass. has produced some good ball players over the yrs. ** Flutie,Hasselbeck bros.(QB’s), Stephen Cooper (LB)of the S.D. Chargers is from Wareham Mass. located between Dartmouth and the Cape, also the Saints had a kid by the name of Jamal Branch (RB) who i believe was last on their practice squad. Unfortunately, football has a lot of competition around here. This is predominately a Hockey/Baseball state and we have produced quite a few good players over the yrs. This kid I think will be the huge body type of tight end, that can block and show some quickness. As for overall speed, this kid is going to prove to be a little slower then most. I see him more of a Dave Capser TE ,not so much a Kellen Winslow type. But hey, UGA coaches have a plan for this kid and I can’t wait to see him in the Red and Black!!! Go DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At the same time, I am not predicting UT to be in the NC either. So quit your crowing about how good UGA is this year before the first snap has been taken. I do predict a loss for UGA @ Arizona and at SC to start the season. Fellow Dawgs we are going to be fine as Josh Davis was the starter at left tackle until he hurt his knee last year during the spring and then he was hampered during the regular season with a shoulder injury. Trinton took advantage of his opportunity last year, now Davis or Vance will have to step up and take advantage this year. Another thing Moreno is fine, the coaches are giving the other RB’s an opportunity to show that they deserve to be the # 2 RB.

PRACTICE UPDATE I

If periods 5 and 6 — the only ones the media was permitted to view Tuesday — were any indication, the Bulldogs have not resolved on a course of action for replacing left tackle Trinton Sturdivant. During that span of roughloy 10 to 15 minutes, line coach Stacy Searels tried several different line combinations as they ran through several plays, with Josh Davis, Vince Vance and Clint Boling all getting reps at left tackle. What’s more, I also saw Chris Davis work at both guards and center, Ben Jones work at center and right guard. Cordy Glenn at first-team right guard, Boling at right tackle and Kiante Tripp at right tackle.

It looked like Searels and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo were simply putting all the linemen through the paces, quickly calling out different plays and then watching to see the if the linemen carried out the right assignments and football.

Not a lot to draw from it just yet but we’ll get some more details when coaches and players are available after practice.

By hop

what a huge loss to the team and one that will be very difficult to replace.

sturdivant was by far our best offensive lineman and playing the most demanding position on the line, since it requires the proper protection of the blindside for righthanded qb’s.

this is going to hurt the dawgs changes of winning a championship!

-it is going to hurt but in reality our O-Line was untested to begin with

-i’m not sure that the challenges the coaching staff face now are much different than what they faced last year

-like last year we will at times be inconsistient and our offense will sputter

—it is going to take big plays by the big players in early key games (USC, Bama, ASU, UT)if we have a shot at BCS

-in essence we will have to gut out some ugly wins and develop momentum before hitting the LSU/UF part of schedule if any of these projections are to come true

1st: I hope Trinton will have a great recovery and be able to continue playing for the Dawgs in the future, I wish him all the best and pray for his recovery. 2nd: People the freaking sky is NOT falling down, and quit buying into all the hokey SI jinx garbage. Football is a physical sport and there are going to be injuries, period. This team is very deep at all positions and from top to bottom is one of UGA’s most talented. While no one ever wants to lose a player of TS’s caliber, it’s not the end of the world. There will be someone who will step up and fill the void, and if you don’t believe that then I question whether or not you’re a real Dawg. We’ve got arguably the best O-line coach in the country in SS and he will have that line ready to go. We also have two tune up games before the real meat of the schedule begins. If anyone thinks losing ONE starter outside of Staff or Knowshon is going to be the difference I say to you there are 21 other starters and 44 2nd and 3rd stringers that would argue differently. I’m not trying to diminish what Trinton meant to the O-line, but we will survive without him on the field this year and have a very successful season. Anyone who takes pleasure in another person’s injury just because he wears another jersey is taking what it means to be a fan WAY out of context. I personally never take pleasure in seeing any player get hurt regardless of the team he plays for. Speaks volumes to one’s character or lack thereof. GO DAWGS!!!

While it hurts to lose Sturdivant, and I wish him a speedy and full recovery, I do want to say that no one player is bigger than this team. Not Sturdivant, not Stafford, not Knowshon. Someone will step up. Coach Richt has built the kind of program that has the will and the chemistry to get it done. This team is deep and no matter who plays the staff will coach them up to the task and their teammates will have their backs. That’s UGA football guys. Keep those heads up. I agree w/ most of you, the depth is so good, this will hurt but someone will step up. I’m not sure about moving Vance over from LG to LT though. Usually aren’t the bigger slower linemen playing on the inside w/ the smaller quicker guys playing the tackle?? I say move Tripp over or have Davis take over LT. Vance is too slow for those quicker SEC DE’s.

On a sidenote, Chip I like your idea of having links ‘everything Bulldog’ on this blog. To add to that, ESPN actually(for once) has a good idea. If you go to their college football section, you’ll see a “blog network” for every major conference. They have some nice indepth reads on every SEC team.

POST-PRACTICE UPDATE

Apologies, loyal bloggers, for just getting back here. I had to write a big follow-up piece on the offensive line situation in the wake of the Sturdivant issue and they needed it for State edition. That basically meant that I had to “write like the wind” after we finally got post-practice interviews… .

My story should be posted on the main site in the next hour but, in a nutshell, here’s what I found out… .

Trinton’s injury is bad. Not as bad as some were saying here but pretty bad as knee injuries go. Trainer Ron Courson would say only it was multi-ligament injury. Surgery sometime late next week and looking at a 9-12 month rehab. But in no way is it a career-ender, Courson said… .

Here’s some good quotes about the whole situation that I was unable to fit into my story:

Richt on what a healthy Sturdivant meant: ” To know the backside of your QB is protected and to know that he understands what to do. He’s bigger, stronger, more experienced than he was a year ago and he did a pretty good job a year ago. It’s sad for him of course because he worked so hard. He got up to around 310 pounds, stronger than he’s ever been and has been practicing so well. It’s hard to lose experience.”

On the impact to Sturdivant’s career: “I don’t think it will threaten his career… . I think it’s somewhere around a nine-month rehab. There was a guy named Dan Footman at Florida State that played for years in the NFL after a similar injury. He’ll be fine.” …

Richt on whether AP voters should take injuries into account for the preseason poll, which will be released Saturday: “I don’t know. I guess they could take anything they want into consideration. They may have already voted by now. I guess they could call up and change their mind if they wanted. I don’t think it will make that big of a difference to the voters.” …

Stafford on the whole deal: “At the time I felt really bad for him. It’s definitely a huge loss for us on the offense. He’s a great player and a great person. But we’ve still got 14 games to play, hopefully. It’s tough, we know, but we have to find somebody to play in that spot. It just opens opportunities for new guys to step in. We have to move on… .

“We’re a resilient team. We understand it’s a loss but we’ve suffered losses in the past. When Thomas Brown went down last year, Knowshon stepped up. There are instances across the board where people go down and other people step up. It’s the sign of a good team. Hopefully we can do that.”

By the way, freshman Cordy Glenn appears to be the emerging unexpected star out of this group. He’s starting at right guard and may slide out to tackle to allow Kiante Tripp to move to the left side. Richt was asked how Glenn looks compared to Boling and Sturdivant this time last year:

“I’d say on par. I think just watching Cordy it didn’t take long to say it could do it physically this year. The question was how much would he learn and how quickly would he learn. I think it’s been outstanding how little he’s made mistakes. If you say slip or slide or tech or Denver ot all these calls that mean something, if you say it at the last second that’s not easy to learn. But he’s been very good. He seems to handle it pretty good. That’s why he’s been working with the No. 1 group the last few days.”

Chip thanks for the updates. I think we can all agree its a major setback for the team but we have people stepping up to fill the void and looks like we may have a solution here. I saw on College Gameday Live they had a story on TS and now some of the analysts say this affects us and our ranking. CMR definetly had the right answer for that. Let people think what they want to. I know the Dawgs will step it up and come out swinging. GO DAWGS!!!

Old Gold, even though you are an enemy blogger, I and many, appreciate the fact that you and others realize that these are real people who have just had a brick wall slam into their dreams. I would feel the same for any young man on the Tech roster. Your comments are sincere and most of us thank you for them.

Zeb, thought about adding on to EARN IT!!, but as Twain said, brevity is the sole of wit. I imagine someone has told the troops about our campaign slogans. Heck it would fire me up.

We are deep at almost every position, we will take this adversity and use it as a rallying point. The O-line will get stronger to PROVE IT for Tristan.

This team has the unique opportuinity, due to the rankings and raw talent, to be something truly special. I can’t wait for opening day.

EARN IT!!!!!

The thing that comes to mind for me is not just losing a starter. Obviously we have capable backups, and no OL can play every snap of every game. But just makes it that much more difficult, and less option, when you need to shift folks around mid season to cover somebody else out for a couple of games. Let’s hope that is minimal.

However, we seem to be able to handle that well enough. It occurs to me that we have rarely had a very long stretch where we were completely settled at line. How many times have we learned that somebody had to come out in the second quarter during the post game interview. I think it happens a lot more than we realize.

Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this or not, but we did get the #1 offensive guard in the country last year, he’s just on the other side of the ball right now….A.J. Harmon. I know Richt promised him he could play defense, but it’s worth a shot. Slide Boling or Vance out to left tackle and slide Harmon in at either guard position.

I hate what has happened to big Sturd. Seems to be a rash of injuries going around(UGA, Auburn, Fla.) You’ve got to feel bad for these KIDS getting hurt after working so hard to get ready for the season. For those of you laughing at the KIDS getting hurt, KARMA will return the favor to you.

Now to the pressing issues. Although I’m upset with the injury to big Sturd, I am just as upset with the “scrambling” going on to find a replacement at LT. Why don’t the coaches hace back-up plans IF someone gets hurt. This “we’ll move this player here and this player there” is a little disconcerning. Boling played well at RG. Jones is a C so on.

The one good thing that comes out of this is the fact that so many players are moving around and playing other positions and getting valuable experience. We are OK for the first 2 games(hopefully). We need to have the 1st and 2nd lines set by SC. We’ve got plenty of depth to do it. Let’s get it done. GO DAWGS!!!

Update…I heard that Stafford injured himself while going for his 3rd helping at the buffet line and is expected to be out for 2-3 weeks. Apparently some gravy spilled off his mashed potatoes and he slipped. We at Tennessee wish you a speedy recovery Matt. Next time only take 2 trips to the buffet line. PS..we here in Knoxville look forward to our trip to the SECCG in December to watch our Vols.

Chip you’re making us very nervous by refusing to acknowledge the half dozen or so requests to clarify the rumors about Knowshon’s shoulder and alleged off-field problems. Is this just rival fans trying to yank our chain or is there something to it? As for Trinton,O-Line is not a place we could easily sustain an injury and Trinton is our most indispensable lineman. He was so good and we were so thin he started immediately without a red-shirt year. Now a red-shirt has been forced on him and there could be a silver lining for us if he plays through a fifth year.As for the NC it’s still attainable but it just got a lot harder. When UT (whom I always pull against but respect) last won it they lost their best player (Jamal Lewis) at mid-year. One big component is luck. They had tremendous breaks in the Syracuse (pass interference call) and Arkansas (Stoerner fumble) games and then played a Florida State team which had lost its quarterback. We will need the young kids to step up and we will need some breaks but we can do it. We’ve never had this much talent. The schedule as everyone has pointed out is rugged.Florida and UT have also had major camp injuries. I loathe Florida as much as any Georgia fan but Tim Tebow is a great human being. His observations on the celebration were class (in great contrast to his coach). If we can beat Florida with Tebow and Percy Harvin (who scares me even more) at full speed it will only add to our lustre. Get well Trinton and Go Dawgs!

I wouldn’t be overly upset about the “scrambling”. I’d say its pretty unlikely the coaches of any team do NOT have a plan for injuries. I think you are seeing the plan. I’d bet we would have still seen some of that moving around even without the injury to Sturdivant, it’s just obviously drawing more attention because of it. Chip might correct me, but I doubt he would have reported lineman moving around had it not been on everyone’s mind. (and I’m sure there was more of it than normal) They can settle all day long on who they want to be the line, but somewhere along the line its going to change. I’d be more concerned if they couldn’t do some switching around now, as in, had no options. I’d be willing to bet they DO know who they would start today, but a lot of this is just in case some other #1, #2s are hobbled.

Munson, you left out the “My God”, it’s good to hear another positive voice out there along with a few other regulars, they know who they are and don’t need to be called out.

Just last week we were hearing about how good AJ Green looked and how he was going to add another whole dimension to our offense. Now all of the sudden the worry because of Sturdivant, lack of info on Moreno, etc. I worry myself but then I remember, it’s only a game for us, and most of the players. Very few of them will go on to make a living at football, but they will have a life time of memories. Let’s have fun with it. If we do lose a game I sure wouldn’t let it or any of the scum sucking comments the idiots post get under my skin. I would pick up my little girl and go out and enjoy the rest of the weekend knowing there would be another day.

Anyone who thinks someone can immediately step into Sturdivant’s shoes and play as well is wrong. This hurts the foundation of any winning team - The O Line. Answer; Elevate Davis and give him plenty of practice and playing time against GaSo & CMi and hope he can do the job from then on.

What the he!! is going on with these preseason injuries? It happens across the country. A simple delay of one week to ten days will give the players more time to stretch and warm up to full contact hits. What a waste of great talent.

Sturdi - I hope you surprise us all and recover in time to play some this season.

Thanks CHIP!

Heck, even when things do get widely reported, they are in here patting themselves on the back, because they are the first to post some idiotic rant about it.

If there was anything to it, it would already be in the mullet-wrapper.

As far as possible injuries, it’s pretty obvious he’s not 100%, or wouldn’t be in the green jersey, but for me if, Im content that the coaches know what needs to be said. Lets see, Heisman trophy candidate, admitted bruised shoulder. Key player for our team to compete for the SEC. Player knows the plays blindfolded. Yeah I would put him in there and throw 300 pound linemen at him. Are you kidding me? Just make sure he is healthy for the first game and let the bull out of the chute. Knowshon does not have to prove a thing. Get off this trouble speculation. In 1982 we ran Hershcel straight at the line during fall practice and what happened? He broke his thumb. He was useless except as a decoy in the Clemson game. Why do we want to take a chance at Knowshon getting hurt? He is smaller than Herschel and the linemen are thirty pounds heavier now. Get the picture?

Those, as many as you list, are hardly all the options that Stacy Searels has for 2008-2009 season.

The facts are that Stacy Searels’ Offensive Line were 13th in the nation at giving up sacks last season, and last season we were in a lot worse shape than Stacy Searels is this year on the OL.

Stacy Searels also had the best rushing yards per game last season since 1992 for UGA with an OL in far worse shape last year than this.

I love Trinton Sturdivant, but the facts are that he gets a 6th year of NCAA eligibility for this injury, and in the long run only makes us stronger both this season and after this season.

We had way too many Offensive Linemen on the roster to play this season, as it was. Redshirting an entire OL class ranked number 1 in the nation for OL recruiting classes two years ago, was a big mistake.

We could not possibly be in a better situation at any position on either side of the ball to absorb the injuries that we will absorb this season playing again one of the toughest schedules in the nation, than we are on the OL of Stacy Searels.

I have complete confidence in Stacy Searels, and none in the AJ-C to analyze what is his call.
