UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Summer’s over and Richt rejoices

Bells were chiming, confetti was falling from the ceiling, doves were being released. That was the scene in the second-floor office of Georgia coach Mark Richt Sunday night at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall.

Metaphorically speaking.

One of the longest offseasons in recent memory officially ended at 5 p.m. Sunday when 105 players checked in to begin preseason practices. Richt had to be the happiest man in Athens. Now there can be no more stories of “offseason arrests.”

We can’t be sure about Richt’s feelings because he hasn’t been taking calls the last couple of days. Seems he’s been a little tied up between preseason coaches’ meetings and legal briefings.

I kid, of course, but I’m sure CMR is not finding much humor from this trouble-riddled summer. Eight of his players - or an average of one a month - managed to get themselves arrested and thrown into jail since the Bulldogs’ Sugar Bowl romp against Hawaii. By all accounts that’s the most in the SEC.

The latest arrest (and indefinite suspension) came this past Saturday when snapper Jeff Henson was popped for public intoxication and urinating in public and two other players wound up in the hospital after getting smashed in the head with beer bottles in a barroom brawl. One of those players, safety Donavon Baldwin, was indefinitely suspended because he was already on probation for a January DUI. Seems a couple of players tore up some property at the hospital while waiting on their teammates to get treated. The hospital has chosen not to prosecute.

That it all happened two days before camp had to have chapped Richt to no end.

At least now those young men will be under the full-time control and supervision of Richt and his staff. There will be very little idle time for players between now and the first week of December. But you’d have thought the mere prospect of having a team good enough to compete for the national championship and wanting to focus every ounce of energy to that end would have been cause enough to avoid an embarrassing streak like the Dogs put together this summer.

Now Georgia has five players suspended or dismissed. Think their absence will adversely affect the Bulldogs in 2008? And what about intangible effects? Does this mean the Dogs will be an undisciplined team on the field as well? Is it an indictment of Richt’s leadership style or coaching ability?

Let me know what y’all think. I’ll let you know what Richt has to say when I cover his press conference around lunchtime.

Seems like the excitment of the number 1 ranking got a few of the guys a little bit carried away. As Clint Eastwood said, “deserve’s got nothing to do with it”. It time for the Dawgs to “Prove It”

Chip, you are correct in the fact that loosing Jeff Henson is no small loss.

I do not believe this will affect the coaches or players preparation for the season.

Dont really think its a big deal. Yes its bad for players to get arrested, but that doesnt mean Richt is a bad coach. Look at the shambles Penn State is in right now.

These football players are in college, and Ill bet the amount of non athlete undergraduate arrests is at a comparable percentage.

My point is this: The arrests you see in the offseason so far have come MOSTLY from young guys who messed up.

The leaders/stars whatever you want to call them know better by this point to be acting like idiots.

I think the team will be just fine.

I’m moving on to the real news. A couple of “busts” who never really play much anyway making mistakes when I am long-since on record a long time ago that I will not defend them, is not something that will sell newspapers dragging it out - like it compares with the Georgia Tech football player charged with RAPE of the Georgia Tech baseball player who died of heroin overdose.

Now, lets be honest here please. The AJ-C has written a decidedly biased storyline of Georgia Tech is going to be great and The University of Georgia is just another school a long way from Marietta Street downtown Atlanta.

Tony Barnhart is a boy from North Carolina who grew up an ACC basketball fan who takes shots at UGA whenever he can and coddles Georgia Tech as a result.

I have read the AJ-C in print my entire lifetime, every day. It costs a fortune since they ran off the only competition in this 1 newspaper town, the Atlanta Times. They did that by dropping the price of the printed paper to 10 cents. Now, Sunday alone is like three dollars.

Its a biased newspaper, as our Governor pointed out a year ago who used to be Vince Dooleys backup quarterback, which has gone out of its way to try to drum up support for Georgia Tech at the expense of The University of Georgia.

Did you read Furman Bishers column yesterday ? Did you really ? Its obvious he has lost it. There isnt anything there reporting news in the entire article.

Chip Towers, UGA beat writer they say, wrote that Ohio State is consensus Number 1 in the nation despite the facts that UGA is Number 1 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, College Football News, EA Sports, ESPN, Lindys, The Sporting News, Dallas Star-Telegram, AJ-C, TC Bailey, The Big Lead, Sports Illustrated and the Average of All Preseason College Football Polls all rank UGA Number 1. How did he come to this conclusion that Number 3 Ohio State, who plays a cupcake strength of schedule he does not discuss and who has been battered in both of the last 2 NC games, is instead the consensus Number 1 ? By taking only 6 polls and finding 6 that only would show Ohio State Number 1.

What was Chip Towers’ previous article as UGA Beat Writer ? He stated that Danny Ware, Chester Adams, Kade Weston, Joe Cox, Bryan Evans, Marcus Washington, and Dannell Ellerbe were only OK as football players at UGA despite the fact all were starters. The coaches expected them to be starters, Chip Towers states. They havent done anything, were not any good Thats B.S.

Here is the URL Link to these biased comments at the AJ-C : http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/uga/entries/2008/07/29/morebuststhan.html

Are you kidding me AJ-C sportswriters that this is what you come up with as news you are reporting on and all this, just this weekend, today being Monday.

Long-sought championship season for Coach Richt who is in fact the 4th Winningest Active College Football Coach in the Bowl Subdivision ?

Wouldnt it be something if UGA is beat this season by Georgia Tech ? Well wouldnt it ?

I say again that the AJ-C is a biased newspaper against UGA and rooting for Georgia Tech.

That these writers have to leave the paper because we do NOT get our UGA news from them pandering to Georgia Tech with their AJ-C reported 29,000 alumni in the AJ-C readership area. UGA has a third a million in the AJ-C readership and this is the biased reporting that is presented daily by them all on the sports desk at the AJ-C.

Cox newspapers is doing us all a favor to get rid of the lot of them and to remind them all that who they are writing for are not the 2 Georgia Tech fans, but the millions of us UGA fans, whom they despise with a passion because Athens is 59 miles away, like all of us do not live here among the 5 and a half million in Atlanta.

Tony Barnhart is a pompous over-bearing self-reported know-it-all who does not report the news he goes out and digs up but instead attempts to tell us all that he knows the real facts on every sport when all he really knows is that he has to find his news at other news sources like all the rest of us.

Terrence Moore stays on ? That racist should have been fired many years ago with the entire rest of the group of agenda sports writing such as I provide you here of just this weekends news. No, Im not going to miss any of them. Good riddance and take a few more with you.

Injured players are a BUST and Dannell Ellerbe is NOT A STAR.

Take note AJ-C sportswriters, those of you who are left, that you are pandering to Georgia Techs two (2) fans and biased in what you say about UGA who make up your readership by direct contrast.

At 20 minutes before midnight last night, this was all well-known that the AJ-C lost both Furman Bisher and Tony Barnhart but you don’t even mention it in passing Chipper Towers, sir.

“However, Athens-Clarke County police Capt. Clarence Holeman said Sunday that the hospital which contracts with the Georgia Athletic Association to provide medical care will not pursue charges because “arrangements have been made to take care of the damage.”

It looks like Big Tolley got in there and saved out season again. Some more players could have been in trouble but we got our lawyer out there to save our starters and we only had to release the names of a couple of third stringers and make them the scape goats since they had been in trouble before. Hopefully Richt will put some ankle bracelets on thesse guys to keep them out of the bars soon so we can finally win another championship.

In fact, there is nothing in print in the newspaper of this 1-horse town newspaper.

And, Jeff Schultz had the guts to print before he left to China that China does not allow opinions contrary its agenda.

Getting drunk and fighting over girls? You would think that the players committed an act of terrorism the way this is being reported. Okay, the Lomax thing was ugly, but he was dismissed. Young guys are going to party and get in fights. Sorry that’s just the way it is. There is really no story, here, beyond that, and it is not exclusive to UGA either.

The only thing more entertaining than the Dawgs getting in brawls, and not getting arrested for destroying hospital property….

Is people who think the AJC is biased against the Bulldogs. Did you miss Mark Bradley whining that UGA did not get into the national title game last year(which insulted the intelligence of all readers who do not bleed black and red)? Have you missed all the “destiny with greatness” type stories that the AJC has written this offseason.

The story I want to read is how and why Mark Richt has carried the lawlessness of Florida State’s program up to Georgia….and more importantly will anyone care as long as he keeps winning.

By charlie

I wondered how long it would take the AJC (Chip) to start a blog solely for bashing the dogs over the arrests. I’m shocked it took you so long (24hrs).

Anybody notice how you never hear about other schools athletes getting busted over alcohol? You probably think it’s because their players are squeaky clean. Wrong. It’s because they don’t have a city paper like the AJC to constantly keep the negative reports in the news. Instead, their reporters start blogs for fans to genuinely discuss the team and its season.

At the MOST these stories about alcohol deserve a REPORT not a BLOG to bash the team. But then if this paper had reporters to do that then how would the AJC survive without blogs to bait Tech and Dog fans to fight amongst themselves?

The UGA football program is an embarrassment to the state of GA. It will continue as long as Mark Richt continues to issue his slap on the wrist punishments. The reason these guys are screwing up multiple times is because Richt didn’t administer significant punishment the first time. Mark Richt ranks right up ther with Nick Saban as the worst of the worst for his win at all costs mentality

UGA’s no different then any other D-1 program in big time college football. They’ve all had their problems with this stuff. There’s no solution. At the end of the day it’s all about money being brought in to the schools.

Kids make stupid decisions every day, but the coaches must win or they’re gone. They can’t discipline these guys too much or they might lose a few games. If they do that they might as well go on and resign.

Richt should make the whole team run extra bleacher runs in the stadium b/c when one player F’s up, they ALL F up. If he doesn’t nip this in the bud NOW, it will spill over and become a huge distraction once practice in pads and then the real games begin. This is totally embarrasing to the program and he needs to come down hard on them. Nobody wants to see UGA become the next Miami, but on the field brawls are not far behind if they keep going the way they are.

When I was in Athens in the early 80’s I believe the entire linebacking corp was forbidden to enter most (if not all) bars in Athens (by the bars, not the university). The difference was that there was no internet to broadcast this news to all poles of the earth. These guys just didn’t play for the first couple of games and no one knew why. Or their nights in jail went unreported because no one really cared; it was “boys will be boys”. I remember some of the stuff that Jimmy Womack used to do. Ho boy, that would turn a few heads now. That whole 1980 team had a ton of run-ins before the season. Something about a pig stolen from the ag or vet school? It just happens people, read it, roll your eyes, but don’t get all hot and bothered about it.

The “G” stands for Georgia, you big dummy!

While I don’t condone underage drinking, I do believe it’s somewhat overplayed towards athletes. The biggest difference is back in the old days when I was at UGA, the legal drinking age was 18. It was a common occurence to see athletes drinking. The legal age is now 21, but I dare say the percentage of athletes drinking is relatively the same. Only now the rules have changed and it’s much easier to get busted. For their own sakes, I do wish athletes (and any underage student for that matter) would say away from the brew.

The Georgia Bulldogs have been my team for 30 plus years. And I would say I am a very big fan, but I am really disappointed with what went on with the team this summer. When I was 18-22 years of age I was a Military Policeman in the U.S. Air Force. If my behaviour would have been as bad as these players. I would have been in big time trouble. These players are on full-ride scholarships to an outstanding University. They should be watching their P’s and Q’s and taking full advantage their scholarships allow.

Majority (all but one)of incidents involve Alcohol issues. Not dismissing the lack of good judgement by those involved but living in Athens I see the majority of these as being a bad indictment of the policing of “Carding” at downtown Athens bars. Seems to me that Athens-Clarke County Police have been lax in enforcing standard procedures to prevent underage consumption. A majority of these arrests could have been avoided if proper procedures were taken and if Athens CC Police were serious about deterring this by holding the establishments accountable for any incident where a minor is charged and fining them (the establishment where the minor was drinking) or placing their alcohol license in jeopardy if there seems to be a pattern of problems.

Without a doubt this is an embarrassment to the program. However, you must put in perspective that the guys (outside of Lomax) were not contributors now, nor in the near future to UGA’s success. You talk about Saban being a violator of the “win at all” cost mentality. Well, I know Jimmy Johnson was far worse, and he didn’t just take it to another team. He took it to another league. With those guys if your a “star” you get the slap on the wrist, but if your the 3rd string weakside LB your off the team. How many people can admit (honestly) that Richt is the same way? 0, hence Lomax is gone. And could you imagine if Knowshon had done something like get arrested after a bar fight? He might not be gone, but the punishment would be stern. If your a guy he expects to count on then you answer a much stiffer penalty.

I think Mark Richt is an excellent coach, and I think he is trying to do right in his approach to discplining players, but all these incidents have to begin to speak to the character - or lack thereof -of some of the players he is recruiting. It does not reflect well on the University.

When does the NCAA step in on events like this ? The athletic dept should build their own bar, hire a group of 100 “lovelies” and let the team fight among themselves every night with no consequencies. Just bring in a couple of bouncer goons to make sure no one really gets hurt.

It stinks to get this kind of pub and all this crap keep happening but you know what’s really funny? Look at T Moores last “UGA” entry titled “RICHT MUST ELIMINATE UGA’s KNUCKLEHEADS”… nothing good written since then when CMR did eliminate the main knucklehead TM was refering to. Only the bad news gets highlighted, and when CMR does what he should, it rarely get the same type of pub.

Anyone who knows how they system works though understands the real root of the problem, CMR can not by NCAA rule have any contact with his players after spring ball and before fall’s camp start, period. So for 4 months these guys are on campus with no one to answer to and make no mistake about it, the younger guys look to their head coach for leadership. Not teachers, not friends, but their coach. Young players aren’t accustomed to their coach not being there, the high school coach is always there. Once they been there a while and get into the “establishment” and the seniors take the lead you see this stuff slow down. But until the NCAA loosens up on the contact rules, this will continue on every campus in america, not just UGA… UF UT & Bama have all had forgettable offseasons.

Classy actions begin with the head coach. The Georgia head coaches’ action last year in Jacksonville told his players that they can act with no class as well…”you can break the rules as long as it suits your purpose”…and obviously he has high level (rich) contacts to keep his top notch players out of trouble even when they get into it big time. The Georgia head coach speaks, like many self righteous Christians these days, with forked tongue. You Dawg fans have fun ripping Meyer. He is a professing Christian as well (although I realize many of you right wing, conservative, red neck fundamentals out there don’t believe Catholics are Christians). The difference is he does not walk around be “holier than”…and just speaks the truth…something the Georgia coach has a problem doing…unless it fits his purpose, of course.

The interesting part of this story is the fact that a group of Richt’s hoodlums players destroyed hospital property while waiting for their fellow thugs to be treated. The hospital did not prefer charges. Undoubtedly Adams sent some of that season ticket scam money in the hospital’s direction. In the last month, we have had a student beaten unconscious, a pregnant woman fondled, and now a hospital vandalized. If His Holiness were what he pretends to be, he would kick all of these bullies and hoodlums off the team.

I always hate having players missing from the lineup on gameday, whether they’re a starter or a backup and no matter whether they’re suspended or hurt. Depth is always important, not to mention experience at playing time top to bottom. But, I honestly think that for the most part, the players who have gotten this team to where they are now and the players who can and will take them to the top at the end of the season are quality character young men with a sense of disipline, and just good common sense. I guess it’s like a weeding-out process. These guys who hurt you and their teammates in the off-season are the same guys that are going to hurt you in practice and on game day so I think everything will work out. I mean, you don’t hear about the stars and the stand-up guys getting into trouble. They are all a group of kids though, yet still a group of kids who need to grow up a little quicker and learn to be responsible men. It is an embarrassment to the university and fanbase that CMR has not stressed to his players that there will be consequences to bad behavior. I am sick of hearing “boys will be boys” every single time one of our players gets into trouble. Eight players in eight months being arrested is ridiculous. These players should be held to a higher standard because they are in the national spotlight as well as some of them receiving an education from a top university at no cost to them. I am starting to get disgusted with the way that CMR is allowing our name to be tarnished.

When UGA beats the absolute hell out of those stumblin fumblin bums on North Avenue AGAIN this year all the ink in the world won’t mean squat. UGA will always own Tech. Bill Bilichik, Steve Spurrier, nor Pete Carroll couldn’t save that bunch. Hell, Mark Richt couldn’t save such a disfunctional program. Amazing how out of all the coaches that wisely turned that black hole for coaches down, the ones that do take it are always proclaimed the “messiah”. And the result is always the same. Paul Johnson will go from hero to zero after the first beatdown that everyone knows is coming occurs. My guess is immediately after the VT game.

Can you gather some data for us? I’d like a list of the top 25 school (as just ranked in USA Today) and their number of off-season arrests. Just so I have some perspective on our Dawgs. It does seem like we get into a bit more trouble than most schools…but I don’t have any numbers to back that up. Can you post that for us? I think it would provide a good place to start a conversation.

Thanks!

After Gooooo Dawgs….were droppin the Sick ‘em and adding Gooooo Dawgs…like the cops are chasin’ ya!!! Remember the most important thing in college athletics is to relate to your players personal experiences. Hey, it worked in ‘07, when we jumped around the endzone like convicts and pumped the Soulja Boy…..Peace Out Dogs and Brad.

The AJC puts up headlines like “Richt is happy the summer is over” and “Summers over and Richt rejoices.” Then the writer goes on to admit that he has absolutely no clue what Richt thinks about anything. Am I the only one that sees a problem with this? Am I the only one that thinks this is irresponsible and sensational? This blog is complete garbage desinged to push buttons, not inform. We should demand more of our local paper people. After all, they have a virtual monopoly.

Some of you people should actually visit Athens every now and then. I swear, 90% of the people on here have no idea what they’re talking about. “Nothing good happens after midnight”? IT’S ATHENS PEOPLE! EVERYTHING HAPPENS AFTER MIDNIGHT! Good and bad. These are young college kids. I was recently one myself. The arrest rate for the student body as a whole is VERY similar to the arrest rate for the football team. Within something like 0.5%. If anything, I’m suprised more football players aren’t arrested. Most of the arrests that occur in Athens are simply for underage drinking. How many of you drank when you were 18-20? Almost all of you. If anything, I’m suprised more athletes aren’t arrested. They’re the big men on campus that get all the attention and everybody wants to party with. Mix that with a police force that makes its sole responsibility to crack down on all those hardened criminals with fake IDs and alcohol on their breath, while the city around the University continues to deteriorate, and it’s truly a wonder there aren’t more arrests. Enough of this crap aboout “Oh, sonny, when I was their age, blah, blah, blah.” It’s a different world now, give me a break. They’re not thugs because they like to drink. They’re just normal. Get over yourselves.

Chip, I let My feelings be known in a post on Sunday, I won’t bore You by repeating them. Let’s just say I’m disgusted! Will these suspensions hurt the team? With the possible exception of Munz, no. Will UGA suffer from a lack of disciplin on the field? Not if Richt gets the attention of the team right now. Bowtin should be red shirted and put on the scout team. With UGA’s depth at LB He probably would have been anyway, but He should be told that He will not see the inside of Sanford stadium untill next year because of this incident. No matter how good He is. Do not suspend King, but bump him back to third string and practice the Freshmen with the first string. I think sitting on the bench and watching a true freshman or walk-on come in on to give Knowshon a break would be more effective than a suspension. Next, if I were Richt I would add extra wind sprints in the first week for the whole team. A team should become like one person, when one screws up, everybody screws up.

These are KIDS who have made some bad choices and have been caught. All downtown Athens is now is bar after bar. They are still responsible for their actions, but they are not any different than most college age kids. I’m sure there were a few other college students arrested over the weekend too. Now with fall practice starting, they will be under lock and key. Let the punishment happen and let’s move on to winning games. I don’t think it’s HEADLINES either when this happens. Let a coach get into trouble then post it. Or let a player commit a felony, then report it. Why not report all of the college students who get into trouble? Let’s move on and Go Dawgs! I’m tired of you guys making something out of nothing. CMR will handle it the way it should be handled!

Everyone needs to get their panties out of a wad…. the player that kicked over trash cans at the hospital was Lemon who is not even on the team anymore so get your facts straight. Lemon, 20, who was dismissed from the team last month after being charged with aggravated battery, was identified by hospital security as the person seen kicking over trash cans.

Everyone expects CMR have complete control over his team 24/7, these guys are adults, its not high school people. Its not like our players are raping, doing heroin, dealing drugs, or using a dead girls credit card. Believe me all of the guys that have been in trouble this summer will pay dearly for their mistakes. This kind of thing has always happened but with the internet you hear about every little thing that happens over in Athens. Get a life and don’t be mad because they get drunk in Athens. I don’t even know why people make this such a big deal. The people that are mad about this are the same people that think a good time is a six pack of Zima.

Tampa Gator:

Good lord! What about Meyer playing Joiner on Saturday night after he was arrested on Felony Burglary Wednesday? The guy didn’t miss a single snap the ENTIRE REST OF HIS CAREER WITH THE GATORS, what kind of message does that send?

Ken:

Akheem Hebron a 5 star recruit, kicked off the team for a year for two incidents ONLY involving underage drinking.

Lemon, kicked off the team forever for assualt. I totally agree this is aserious incident, but Richt can’t legally give a guy a lethal injection or the chair. Kicking someone off the team is the most serious punishment a college coach can dole out!

Hensen, I believe is suspended for at least a season if not more kicked off forever.

Chandler, starting TE, suspended for a game for ABOVE age drinking in a parking lot. He was 21 drinking a beer in the parking lot of his apartment during the Summer.

Baldwin - suspended already for a DUI and kicked off the team permanantly after the 2nd problem. I agree with you that in this one instance, the original suspension for DUI should have been longer.

Any crime involving physically hurting someone Richt has consistantly kicked the guy off the team. Even minor infractions like the J walking incident and others result in missing at least a game.

Name me another school that has suspended a player (a real player) for JUST getting caught drinking underage, no other problem. I cannot find a single case at ANY other D1 college football program. Probably because nobody on that campus drinks alcohol!

Which specific incidents at UGA should have had a tougher penalty (other than the Baldwin case which I agree was too light). Let us know

Same sh1t, different year. Other college students are doing this stuff, they’re just not on the football team. These are really just kids having fun and some make mistakes, granted some pretty stupid ones. Life goes on. These players know they are under more scrutiny and they have to pay the price for their actions. So football goes on without them. No big deal - nearly every program has the same issues. It’s part of college football. Go Dawgs.

The premise of this article is absurd. Most of this criminal activity took place during the school year, and some of it during the football season. Richt has complete control over these thugs, and he can kick them off the team for any infraction. Probably half of Richt’s scholarship players have no intention of graduating from college and couldn’t do so if they wanted to. They are looking for an entry to the NFL and the money associated with pro football. It is next to impossible to gain that entry without experience and exposure at the college level. Richt’s focus has always been to win in any way possible. In spite of his phony religious piety, he is no different from Saban, Spurrier, and Fat Phil. A real college president would step in and put an end to this behavior before some innocent person is killed. As long as Adams can scam the fan base for 10K season tickets, he will continue to wink at Richt provided Richt can win football games. Don’t count on a championship, though because these people are not champions.

The Dawgs are fine. They have a few, that as adults, have made poor decisions that do not reflect upon CMR but themseleves and how they were raised.

I-Dog, and others, My problem is not so much what these guys did as when They did it. This team has a chance to do great things, partying the weekend before spring practice starts is not what needs to be done to take this team to the top. Every student in Athens knows the cops are tough in that town, yet these guys go partying with Lemon. While most will not be missed, King is expected to be an important part of the offense, and He is in a bar underage and mouthing off at the cops. he needs an attitude adjustment.

Representing the SEC in the running for the Fulmer Cup as of today, the Red Elephants of Alleybammy have a commanding lead over the Razorpigs, then the Dawgs followed up by the Mighty Vols. Next we have Florida and MS ST rounding out the SEC reps in the Top 25…Roll On Tide…

I-DOG — FYI. Meyer immediately suspended Joiner and took his captain role away forever after he was charged. He returned to the team, and the LSU game, only after he was cleared by the law (the DA), the owner of the establishment (who said his own employee made a bad judgement call in dealing with Joiner’s car that night, the University, and only after talking to Meyer). He did not start against LSU and did not play until Munroe (his replacement) was hurt. Yes, Joiner played the rest of the year and played well. He also was a model citizen for the rest of the year…and to this day. In fact, Joiner had been a model citizen up until that point. Joiner just wanted his car, which he should have been given, no matter the time of night. The employee at the place was scared to open to fence for an “angry black man”…therefore upsetting Joiner. Can you blame Joiner for getting upset for someone being racist? Can you blame Meyer for reinstating him (but losing his captainship and starting role) after he had been cleared. Tony Joiner is a great guy…Meyer knew that. The big thing, he was innocent of the charge. YOU THINK YOU SHOULD NOT PLAY SOMEONE EVEN IF THEY HAVE BEEN PROVEN INNOCENT? Meyer did all the right things in the Joiner case. Give me a break. In addition, Meyer is all over the Gator players about living right…and he holds them accountable. A good story out of Gainesville is about a player who is coming back to the team as a walk on after he was kicked off it by Meyer (Ronnie Wilson). The kid returned to school after being kicked off the team, paying his own way. Lived right, and now he has earned his way back on the team. Still no scolly, however. The kid was a potential All-American, but that did not matter to Meyer. He was gone. But the kid has had enough character to not give up, change his ways, work hard, and he is now getting a second chance. CLASSY…just like Coach Meyer.

Georgia will never learn what dicipline means. Sit a couple of thugs out of a meaningless game is like sending your grandma to the store for a pack of smokes. You’d never miss her anyhow and would do better if she didn’t come back.

Just announced that The player responsible for the vandalism at the hospital was suspended for more than 20% of the season, ordered to pay for the damage, and hours of community service and counseling.

If no charges had been filed at any other school, like they weren’t here… the player would run a few wind sprints (which I assume he will also have to do at UGA in addition to the above stated penalties.)

Mark Richt is a great football coach and by all accounts a fabulous human being. It is possible though that he shares with his mentor, Coach Bowden, a blind spot when it comes to recruiting kids with character. Coach Bowden has paid the price many times for giving chances to young men from troubled backgrounds. Sometimes it pays off for everyone involved but too often it blows up. Virginia Techs’ football program is the poster child for this recruiting approach. None of us want a rogue program. The top programs in the Country ( USC, Florida, Ohio State ) do a good job of recruiting kids with character and the result is a minimization of embarrassing events. Come on Coach Richt — step up.

Im as big a UGA fan as there is. Its about time we quit blaming the coaches, the police, the bars or whoever and start putting the blame where it belongs….on the players. They get a free ride at a great university and all they have to do is play a game. The “boys will be boys” argument is getting old. They should be held accountable for their actions just as if they were the average “joe” student. I hope CMR can instill his values on the team and help teach them to make better decisions. If that had happened to Joiner at UGA, he would not have played against LSU period and end of story. Of course, Joiner was stripped of his Captain status, what else could Meyer do when the story made the USA Today!

The guy criminally trespassed and took a car that didn’t belong to him (it was his girlfreinds right and it was locked up, right? Even if the people who towed the car were not nice to him.

Wilson got a 2nd chance at UF? Wasn’t he arrested for firing an AK 47 near a crowd! Again, if that had been a Georgia player firing a weapon like that… he would NEVER get to suit up for the Dawgs again.

There was a UGA hoops player that was suspended just for having a 3 inch fishing knife in his room this past year.

UGA player, Hebron was a five star player and had to do basically the same thing that UF player Wilson did. He was kicked off the team for a year and had to earn his way back. His crime instead of shooting an AK 47 near a crowd of people was… he was not 21 and drank alcohol.

I don’t see how that makes Meyer a class act.

Hey guys. I apologize for not being more interactive today but I’ve been slammed just from the standpoint of it being the preseason news conference and the first day of practices couples with the developments regarding Dewberry’s suspension and all that entails… .

It was rather notable that CMR spent at least 75 percent of the season’s first press conference talking about off-the-field behavior issues. But even he acknowledged that was understandable given the cumulative weight of 8 incidents and the fact that the three took place on the Saturday night before camp opened on Monday… .

Here’s the ultimate irony: Richt decided to practice 27 times rather than the NCAA maximum 29 times in the preseason so he could give the players a break this past weekend between the end of summer semester workouts and the beginning of preseason camp. Some thanks he got for that! …

Practice updates and news conference tidbits coming soon!

As stated earlier I am not excusing bad judgement but ACC PD is everybit the culprit on this as anyone. There is no incentive for them to truly enforce “Carding” to eliminate underage drinking in downtown Athens bars. Why?!!! when they get $500 bond plus fine plus community service in the deal. It is much like the lazy way they have turned to camera monitored traffic lights. Hasn’t really lowered the accidents but it SURE has been a cashcow for good ole’ ACC!!! Same goes with these underage and public intoxication penalties. (not just the FB Player’s either) They know it’s going to happen so why kill the Golden Goose!!! Typical of UGA fans to not admit that their ” players ” can do anything wrong but want to point fingers at everyone else. If everyone else is jumping off of a cliff, is it OK for you to jump off of the cliff too.

UGA should have a good season this year. Provided they don’t run out of bail money or they can have a jail break every Sat. morning.

I am convinced that the people complaining about the arrests at uga are just haters stirring the pot or have never been to Athens (especially in the last 3 years) and have never been 18-19 yo. All of these arrests except for Lemon are typical stuff that happens in a university town. underage drinking, uritnating in public, open container, etc. If you say you have never done one of those above things I would call BS on you. On top of that Athens/CC is being funded by the students and fines payed for arrests. Have any of you talking smack ever been to Athens? If you walk through Athens (even on game day) with a plastic cup and it has alcohol in it, you WILL get a ticket. If you are underage and have that same cup you WILL be arrested. I’m not excusing the arrests and it doesn’t look good, but if you think the same thing is not going on at every university town in America (except GTU-dorks) then you are not very perceptive. Some schools just have better working relations with the police, and most college towns do NOT have the same concentration of bars that downtown athens does. I ask again…have you been to Athens lately. It’s an 18 year olds dream/nighmare. There is no ACC/SEC schools campus town quiet like it.

Not an SEC Fan, not all UGA fans turn their heads. Rather, we hang them. While we do so, we also acknowledge there is only so much that can be done to control teenagers. I’ve raised 3 and they all did things that defied logic. However, nothing was fatal and they turned out to be quite successful, mature adults. There’s hope.

I- DOG. YOU MISSED THE POINT…twice! Joiner was cleared of ANY wrongdoing before the school reinstated him and Meyer then allowed him to play again (but he never regained the postion of captain and he did not start against LSU). What is wrong with that? I wrote that Wilson’s willingness to take his dismissal, stay at the university, work hard, change his behavior, and then walk on to earn the right to play again…is classy…and, by the way, very remarkable these days. Wilson willingness to work hard and come back on his own does, however, show what a class act Meyer is. That says Wilson has a lot of respect and admiration for his head coach, and that he was willing to change to come back to play for him. Yes, Wilson made a major mistake, received just punishment for it, and now, through reformed behavior and hard work, has earned another opportunity to prove himself worthy again…without a scholly. I think Wilson has learned a valuable lession, and I think he should be allowed to walk on at Florida…as long a he pays his own way through school. That is what America is all about, my man. I hope all of your players learn from their errors in judgement. But, the bigger problem is the lack of control your head coach has over his players…very ZOOK-like to me…and very similar to what happened when your coach was the head assistant at “Free Shoes University.” If you recruit a lot of 5-star thugs, you will have a lot of 5-star problems. Say what you want, Meyer’s first focus in recruiting is the player’s character. There are a lot of 5-star players in the state of Florida that have gone elsewhere because they had character or serious academic issues and Meyer would not recruit them (one plays running back for West Virgina right now). I am sure one or two of Florida’s players will mess up soon. It is what happens occasionally at any school. But what is happening at Georiga right now is a reflection of a bad culture that the head coach needs to address honestly and correct…or it will destroy him…as it did with Zook (who, by the way, is also a man of high character).

Some tidbits from practice:

Let me tell you, I haven’t seen him in pads yet but wide receiver A.J. Green looks great. He’s wearing No. 8 and, just from an athletic standpoint and the grace and ease with which he runs routes and catches the ball bodes well for the Bulldogs… .

PK Blair Walsh is wearing the No. 57. I asked him if that was his jersey for the year because he was listed as 87 on the new roster and he said, “unfortunately yes. The only kicker in the country in the 50s. …

Here’s your No. 1 O-line as of Day One: LT Sturdivant, LG Vance, C Davis, RG Anderson, RT Tripp… .

August 4, 2008 7:12 PM Heres the totality of all the so-called arrest that the media is so extended about.

FB Fred Munzenmaier: Two games for walking and drinking. LB Darius Dewberry: Two games for kicking over plants and hitting a parking lot arm. OG Clint Boling: One game for reckless driving. SN Jeff Henson: Indefinitely for double drinking incidents. DB Donavon Baldwin: Indefinitely for double drinking incidentrs. DE Michael Lemon: Dismissed from team for beating up a guy.

Thats it. Thats the total impact of all the embellished and overhyped allegations of out of control that the media loves to lay on the Dawgs.

When you read the actual punishments does it sound like out of control to you? No, it doesnt. Or does it come across sounding more like the Athens-Clark County police chief defined it. the football players at UGA are not out of line with the typical college student. And oh, the police chief used the stats to prove it, something these blind allegations do not do.

I am left with the feeling that if 15 UGA football players were arrested for robbing a bank and later all charges were dismissed because the police mistook the UGA bus for the geataway car the AJC 6 months later would be using all 15 arrests to prove some hollow point.

Chip, I would be more concerned about the off field trouble if the guys involved were big-time players. Sure Boling, Henson and Dewberry are starters at their respective positions, but they are able to practice with the team and we do open up with Georgia Southern and Central Michigan. I’m not too concerned with directional schools. It’s no big deal; 1 offense starter, 1 defense starter, 1 special teamer and 5 subs. I think they will still be able to find enough talented players to “get past” the first couple of games. Season starts against South Carolina.

Tampa Gator:

You can’t be serious.

A guy get’s arrested on felony burglary charges and ‘magically” the charges are dismissed in just two days? I wonder how that happened in Gainsville two days before the LSU Florida game? Hmmmm.

I am more than twice Joiner’s age and have yet to be arrested on felony charges, but if it ever did happen, I can tell you that I wouldn’t think the wheels of ‘justice” would move that quickly since I am not a member of the Florida football team with a very big upcoming game.

Would Richt have suspended Joiner? You bet. Proof? A starting OL, Bolinger, had charges dismissed recently for a driving incident (NOT A FELONY). After A MONTH! the charges were dismissed and this player is still being suspended for a game.

The guy with the AK 47 getting a 2nd chance at Florida? What if a bullet had killed an innocent bystander or paralyzed them? No 2nd chance for them.

IF you EVER read of a UGA player with an AK47 in a crowd… that player will never again suit up for the Dawgs. I’m not impressed that he kept his nose clean for a whole year. Meyer runs a real tight ship.

Finally - Positive Headlines and national respect with a #1 preseason ranking - and within a few days - Headlines revert to a program of typical arrogant elitist athletes that feel as if they are above the law.

WE have had our issuess at Auburn as well - and as an alum - my stomach hurts when this type of headline hits the papers - because no matter how many good players of good things your school has done - the THUGs dominate the headlines and that becomes the public perception of your program and school

If it was one or two players - it’s one thing - but 8 players arrested since the Sugar Bowl??? You have a problem in Athens - character matters - Dawgs will not win the SEC East - write it down

How embarrassing for thUGA and the SEC

War Eagle-

I disagree with your comments about CMR and the idea that a few players’ bad behaviour would cause him to be judged like that.

Frankly, those types of comments from someone with your experience trying to mold young men into being better than society gives them a chance at are beneath you.

I’m surprised that you would know the man as well as you do, and have a better than most folks’ understanding of what his job is day to day would count yourself on the side of pure morons that want to label him in such a way.

You’re a better man than that. There are a lot of people who know you or at least of you and have a great deal of respect for you and your opinions. You know as well as I that Tubbs has been in the same boat and every Coach either has or will be in the same boat, having players… young men make poor decisions.

How you can even insinuate that CMR can be labeled or even compared to some of those old programs is appalling. What next? are you going to take to the same low level as others and mock his religious convictions negating the works that he has been a part of, helping the less fortunate? The Georgia Bulldog football program is nothing but a joke —fielding a team with a bunch of low-life criminal thugs who are certainly not deserving of a scholarship offer to a major university of higher education.

As an alum of UGA I’m simply appalled. Even under Dooley things were’t this bad from a public relations standpoint. You Dawg fans who are stating this is no big deal must be sidewalk fans and not alums. You sidewalk fans who defend these actions by stating, ‘well, it’s not as bad as GT players raping or ODing on heroin’ don’t get it either.

There is NO excuse for this. Dump these lowlifes out of the program, don’t let them return, and stop recruiting this type of athlete. UGA 89-

I don’t believe for a single second that you have ever been to Athens Ga, much less graduated from UGA.

Since you are so intelligent that you can trash everything UGA in one post, why don’t you explain to everyone what you mean by “stop recruiting this type of athelete”. In your infinate wisdom and obvious superior knowledge of recruiting by CMR and the UGA Coaching Staff, tell us all how you would determine that a high school football star that has never been in trouble, has good enough grades to qualify, and has made it through the character tests that CMR uses to guide his decisions will somehow become what you call “this type of athelete?” Feel free to find some integrity and quote us all the “thug” background of these atheletes. Real stuff, not just prejudiced “code” words for black atheletes, I’m talking about substance… criminal records and such. I challenge you to back up your rhetoric with fact or just STFU.

Tell us all how you would be able to sit in a young man’s living room while other powerhouse universities are waiting on the porch for their turn, and you can accurately predict that in a few years this young man will get caught drinking a beer in public… your definition of a thug.

Better yet, why don’t you just shut up and let people wonder if you are an idiot instead of posting garbage that proves you are one.

Dewberry’s acts are embarassing and inexcusable—he should be let go. Henson very literally just p** away his playing career—he should be gone too. Alcohol related incidents are one thing, especially in kids this age, and everyone should be given a second chance in that regard, but repeat screwups reveal a pattern, and should be stamped out before spreading. Set a standard that these players understand and respect, and eliminate these bad apples.

I have been and always will be a supporter of Richt, but this is the first time I’ve felt a little frustrated—not that this is really even his fault, but he is the head coach, so of course he’ll be looked to when these incidents occur. I hope he does the right thing and makes an example out of these imbeciles. Destroying private property, especially a hospital, is ignorant and embarassing. To those of you who don’t see a problem with this behavior…did you attend UGA or does your affiliation end when the football game ends on Saturday? These kids, whether you like it or not, do represent the University and this type of behavior paints us in a very bad light.

I am not making excuses for Dewberry but I think it is fair to look at the facts and try to understand the situation. It appears that Dewberry was acting out of frustration. Instead of trying to hunt down the guys that bashed his friends’ heads with beer bottles and taking out some serious revenge, and risk prison time, he reacted poorly by breaking some pots and one of those remote parking arms that go up and down letting cars go in and out of a garage. He was wrong for what he did. He may have been able to get away with it, but he fairly promptly turned himself in and admitted guilt.

Again, I’m not making excuses, but if what was reported by the sensationalistic media as a Bar Room Brawl was as such, where are the other particpants? What hospital did they have to go to? If all this was the UGA players’ fault we’d all be watching the other guys tell their side of the story on the news with Lawyers standing there. Sounds like the UGA guys got the worst end of the deal and who knows, may have never touched the other guys. We just don’t know.

As far as Dewberry, the only question is whether the punishment fits the offense. 2 games, reimbursement for the property damage, community service and some serious on the field punishment. Even in the court system leniency is granted for people who admit guilt and turn themselves in.

If this had been just a random act of vandalism where he went out looking for someplace to cause some property damage… different story. He was in a moment of passion and frustration for what he saw had happened to his team mates. If the Hospital wanted to press charges, that would be a different story also. It is my understanding that he was not even arrested, it became a private matter between him and the hospital. Maybe I’m wrong but I think there is something to be said for him being man enough to own up to his fault and paying for it.

I concur Hunk Erdown. Dewberry is a fine example of what CMR instills in his players. We, as Christians, make mistakes. It is not the mistake that decides our fate it is how we respond to it. Repenting for our sins. Now, by no means do i want to make this a religous based arguement. But, for those who have bashed Richt’s faith, it’s the only option.

As one post mentioned, all but 2 of the “out-of-control” incidents were drinking only. And another post mentioned that in the SEC alone Bama and Arkansas have had more run-ins with the law since the end of last season.

So please be wise when you call a group of young men “thugs”, because I’m sure for those of us that went to college drank before we were 21. And those of you that didn’t also drank before you were 21, as well. 6 drinking incidents, 1 fight, and 1 guy upset at a hospital. No lives taken or potential to be taken (UF AK-47), and no woman’s innocence and feeling of being safe shattered (Tech you know what I’m talking about).

The only difference is that UGA’s no. 1 and it’s “The gift and the curse”. Because, everyone loves a winner. But, everyone watches and meticulously dissects that same winner.

I can tell you for an absolute fact that if Georgia Tech had a drug program with teeth they would be missing about 15 players right now. I personally have taken in 7 footballers for simple possession of marijauna. They are released to a coach and entered into counseling. If an automatic suspension came with this offense they couldnt hide their pot smokers out of sight of the public. Tech fans would be surprised just how many miscreants they really do have on that team.

I hate that some of our guys made poor decisions, but out of the 105 young men on the team most are outstanding God fearing young men, and any person that makes a blanket accusation that our team is full of thugs and CMR lacks integrity DOESN’T KNOW HIS A* FROM HIS ELBOW!!!! So a few guys got busted for underage drinking and wreckless driving, OH NO!!!,like that’s never happened before in a college town like AThens. Offenses like DUIs and fighting just make me shake my head in grief. I know kids are kids, but you guys have got to be smarter than that! Coaches do all they can, you can’t watch these kids 24/7. CMR is big on discipline, at least you hear about our players being punished when they screw up and missing games, doing community service and doing up downs till they puke. It just gets swept under the rug at other schools, or they will just play them anyway like Meyer. Rival schools love fat to chew, especially losers! DeRon Furr did not attend Auburns practice Sunday a day after a practice skirmish left him on hands and knees for a few minutes before he needed a trainers assistance to struggle to a nearby tent the players are using for water breaks. Furr spent the remainder of practice sitting under the tent.
