UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

No. 1 distinction a mixed blessing for Dogs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Let the hype begin!
Obviously by now most of you have heard that Georgia was selected preseason No. 1 in the USA Today/Coaches poll that was released at 6 a.m. Friday morning. This is significant for a couple of reasons.
Chiefly, it’s important because the coaches poll is a third of the formula for determining what two teams play in the BCS Championship Game. Starting high in the poll can be a factor in finishing high, particularly if a team stumbles somewhere along the way. Just ask LSU, which started last season No. 2 in the coaches poll and managed to get into the BCS championship and win the national title despite two losses.
Secondly, this is the opinion of college football coaches. And it is a well documented fact that the coaches are much more diligent about making their selections since it became a legitimate part of the BCS formula for determining a champion. Coach Mark Richt himself has talked often about how he sits up late on college football Saturday nights watching ESPN’s SportsCenter so he can be sure to see all the highlights of all the teams and make an informed decision when he has to turn in his poll on Sundays in the fall.
On the other side of things, any team to be tabbed No. 1 in the preseason will have a target on its back the rest of the year and opponents will be supremely motivated to take them down.
By the way, Richt did NOT pick the Bulldogs No. 1 on his poll. At SEC Media Days last week he said he was going to choose according to the consensus of all the preseason polls to that point. According to a composite poll compiled by the SEC media relations office, Ohio State was the consensus No. 1, followed by Southern Cal and then a tie between Georgia and Oklahoma.
So what’s your reaction about Friday’s news? Big deal? Much ado about nothing? Do you agree with it?

It also means that UGA should have a good team. This sure beats a pre-season rank of, say, 12.

Its a huge deal. It’s been 26 years since we’ve been the No. 1 team in the country, in any poll, at any time during the season. While it doesn’t mean anything in the record books if they don’t back it up, it says a lot about the perception of the program in the minds of the nation’s coaches.
And it feels damn good to be #1 once again.
Finally, I would like to point out that the Coaches got it right. Too many in the media look at the pre-season poll as a way to show how smart they are with respect to how the teams will finish. The poll is not a predictive one it is a poll which is supposed to reflect which team is the best in the country right now. It is not a contest to see who can pick the eventual BCS Champion which is an entirely different question. If the Big East Champ and the Big Twelve Champ go undefeated there is a great chance that the best team in the country won’t even get to play in the BCS Championship.

Being #1 will be nice while it lasts, which should be untill the winner of tOSU and SC is determined, then I think it will change. That’s fine too, I am more concerned with where UGA is ranked in December. Where You start does affect where You finish. Just ask LSU, and Auburn!

Plus it will be exciting to hear the PA announcer at Sanford Stadium to say “Here comes the number 1 team in the land” lead out by UGA VII. Its gonna be crazy in the the city of Athens come Aug 30th. Of course being ranked #1 has benefits, in the BCS, in desirability for prime television spots, coverage on ESPN, etc. Being #1 also brings more national exposure to the program, which obviously can’t hurt recruiting.

Agreed. Starting high makes it easier to stumble early and then work right back up to the top. Chip, I want your take on the TV/Money aspect of all this: Being televised by CBS for the majority of the season isn’t doing us or anyone in the SEC any favors with this beauty contest. ABC (ESPN) obviously like to hype their own games. If CBS owned ESPN, would the season play out differently? I didn’t start to think about these things until Auburn got robbed a few years back with an undefeated record. Do you think playing ASU on ABC means that we will actually make some Sportscenter highlights somewhere in the first half of the show? The pundits might atually talk about us, our players, etc. Or do I have to endure another solid year of USC, Ohio State and Oklahoma highlights and love affairs?
Go Dawgs.

I love the fact UGA is getting some national respect. I’m optimistic about the outcome of the upcoming season, but I’m also a realist, this schedule is nothing less than a gauntlet. I say let’s introduce UGA VII to winning ways by beating Southern first; like CMR says win the individual Games, don’t get caught up in the polls, and the rest will take care of itself. GO DAWGS!

I ditto DC Dawg. Otherwise, it doesn’t mean a thing and doesn’t amount to a hill of beans. They always look at last year; what’s that got to do with anything, besides returning starters. Even with that, who’s to say a returning starter will be better this year? It’s great to get some recognition; but we’ve gotten that at the end of each season. The first BCS rankings will be a lot more important. First, we gotta beat GA Southern. Then we gotta beat C.Mich, etc etc. Fellow Bulldog fans: please don’t get too hyped up ‘cause about any team on our schedule can beat us if we don’t play 60mins of Bulldawg football. You think LSU, Awbun, Flawduh, Tinuhsea won’t have something to say about all this?

Am I the only that doesn’t like this as a UGA fan? Imagine how p** and motivated the team would be if Florida were ranked ahead of us after that whipping we put on them last year. I’d much rather be the “underdog” (however much of an underdog a top 5 team can be) than #1. I have a feeling Coach Richt would agree with me. He’d much rather be harping “Let’s go prove everybody wrong!” all season than “Come on guys! You’re not #1 until you prove it on the field!” First and foremost, we need to win the SEC. That being said, how many times has a team gone wire to wire to win the BCS championship? I think only twice in 11 years (FSU and USC if I’m not mistaken). So more often than not the coaches are wrong at the end of the season. As bad as it sounds, I think an early loss this season could be a blessing in disguise for this team. Knock us down a few spots in the polls and give us something to prove and something to fight for through the rest of the year.

I’m ceratinly not going to complain. It’s high time we got even a little respect from the polls, coaches or otherwise. Even now, that respect is grudging; this is the second closest preseason poll at the top since USA Today began administering the poll and the only time that three teams got double digit first place votes. And does anyone really believe that The OSU can actually beat any of the other teams in the top six? They should have to prove it in order to get that ranking, and that hasn’t happened in a while. Oh well, it’s up to UGA to stay in the race. Truly their destiny is in their own hands now.

Well, this year will show exactly how good our entire coaching staff can be. It will tough to keep guys 18-22 year old from getting a big head from all the hype. It’s an easy thing to do at that age.
It’s all about one game at a time. I love CMR, don’t get me wrong, but we have yet to have an entire year in which we were ready to play every game and show enthusiasm. Look at the UT game last year. Not to take anythng away from UT, but we were flat.
Still, with our schedule, one loss should still get us in the NC unless that loss is to UF and they are undefeated. Their schedule gives them a better chance to be.
One game at a time men! I look forward to a great season. Go Dawgs!

Puts a target on our back, yes, but also increases the “choke” factor for our opponents. Teams are more likely to choke by the end of the game when they’re trying to upset THE NUMBER ONE TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. That’s a psychological advantage.
Thing I hate is how much power it puts in the hands of the editors of SportsCenter, if that’s where coaches are keeping up with teams to determine their vote. How many of you have watched a game, then watched the ESPN highlights, and felt like the game summary just missed how it all went down?

GATOR CHOMP: I agree with you about Tebow being the best player in this era. Not even Peyton could do the things he can. However, he still needs people to block for him. We found several holes last year in your line and will again this year. Tebow is a class act off the field as well. I only pull against him against my Dawgs. This years game will be one for the records!

Please spare me all the tired psychobabble about handling the hype and targets on the back. Please people, develop an original thought. The media has beat this supposed story to death. If a preseason ranking is so meaningless, why would it have such a huge impact on the psyche of the team? Is there some news that I am not aware of? Is Richt calling off preseason practice because of the #1 ranking to avoid injury? Are the players currently dancing in the streets of Athens celebrating this tremendous accomplishment? I don’t think any of these things have happened.
Generally speaking, I think this whole “handling the hype” thing is way overblown in college football. I don’t think anybody goes to a school like Georgia, LSU, Florida, USC, etc. to fly under the radar their whole careers and play in peach bowls. This are big time athletes that want a big time stage. At those schools, you face the risk of losing your starting job almost everyday. You think they give two **s what some stupid poll says? I don’t think they’re just spewing cliches and coachspeak when they say they pay no attention to it. I think they’re telling the truth. They’re just trying to earn their way on to the field.
I’ll just stop here and say that if Georgia doesn’t win it all this year it won’t be because they couldn’t handle the hype. It will be because they weren’t good enough. We will see.

This is great news for the Dawgs! Ben I disagree with you, Being No.1 means we control our own destiny. We don’t have to hope this team loses or that team loses, they just have to go out and take care of business. As for the disrespect factor, if these kids need that as motivation to go out and play hard then they’re in trouble. RoboDawg I agree with you, late in close games there will be much more pressure on the team trying to pull off the upset. The bottom line is if you’re ranked 3-25 you will need help to get to the national championship game, whether it’s a team losing or winning in fashion to sway pollsters, you don’t have control of squat. Being number 1 with the schedule Georgia has, we can’t be turned away, we CMR and the Dawgs are in control. 1 game at a time, 1 win at a time. Let’s not forget, CMR coached on the 1999 and 1994 FSU teams so he has 1st hand knowledge from a coaching perspective of how to manage those expectations, and what can happen if you don’t but more importantly what can happen if they are managed properly. (FSU 1999). GO DAWGS!!

Just catching the news all the way from Los Angeles and this news is more exciting than Manny Ramirez — I think I might move back to the ATL for this season!
Anyway, at least we know we won’t be the next Auburn if we run the table. CMR has enough heart to win it for Tubberville — after we take down that war eagle, of coarse!
But look at our schedule now … #5Florida, #6 LSU, #11 Auburn, #16 Ariz. St. and #18 Tennessee. Let’s not forget the Ol’ Ball Coach, our in-state rival running a threatening option, and Central Michigan twice returning MAC champions. As Beano Cook put it, “If Georgia goes 13-0, they should be playing in the Super Bowl”

Georgia has never done well when picked to do so in pre-season. The most recent examples is still loom in the rear view mirror. Remember when we read all those stories about David Greene and David Pollack (those “wacky nutty roomates”) in their senior season leading the Dawgs to the promised land? They were great leaders (on and off the field), but unfortunately the team was not up to the expectations created in the media. Remember when Jim Donnan’s team beat Florida and went to Knoxville with a chance to be #1? The team could not handle prosperity and, as coach Donnan said at the time, ” we just blew our chance to play with the big boys.” Tennessee was a very good team, but Georgia came out flat and made it easy for Fulmer to spoil the party. Had Georgia won that game, Mark Richt might never have come to Athens. (We could go into detail about Ray Goff’s 1992 team, but it is too painful.)
It takes as much of a mental edge to be a champion as it does to have the physical abilities and work ethic. Coach Richt is right when he emphasizes that a team has to focus on the work to be done… but they also have to believe they are worthy of becoming champions. That is why Urban Meyer took his team to the top so quickly. The culture of winning established by Spurrier still hung in the air. Florida did not tolerate Ron Zook the way we did Ray Goff.
The Dawgs certainly have a chance. Like many on this Blog, I have watched every season since 1980 hoping for another chance to see my team win a championship. Even if they lose, I will be satisfied if it happens because the other guy wins by playing their best, not because the Dawgs could not handle the pressure and sustain focus.

I think the preseason poll speaks more to the excellent program CMR has built at UGA than it does to who will win the BCSNC.
Remember that it was just in 2002 that we were all excited for having won our first SEC championship since 1982.
Will the Dogs win it all? The season has not even started.
They will have a great season if they play their opponents 1 at a time and not look ahead.
They could win a lot of exciting games and beat Tech, play in the SECCG, and win a bowl game over a really good team and I would be extremely happy.
You don’t have to win the BCSNC to be a winner and have a fun season. It would be great to be 14-0 and BCS champs, but it will take hard play and some luck too.
If we do as well this season as we did last season, I will be extremely happy.
I will always love the Georgia Bulldogs and support CMR regardless of a NC or not.

Urban Meyer took his team to the top because UCLA upset USC the last game of the season. It had nothing to do with a “culture of winning”. It had everything to do with pure blind luck (and a great team that had a great season). If not for UCLA’s upset, Meyer would have been forced to settle for an SEC title and 13-1 season just like Richt did in 2002.
Its amazing how many people are absolutely clueless to the luck factor in college football. Culture of winning? Good grief what a bunch of crap. I’d also call winning 72 games in 7 seasons a culture of winning but that’s just me.

Chip,
1 is nice. I’m 28 and we haven’t been #1 since I was in my first year on earth in 1980!Now, let’s earn the right to be #1 wire to wire…even with this record. If we win all of our games (which is possible) we will solidify our Dawgs as one of the best teams in COLLEGE FOOTBALL HISTORY. Think about that!
Last— I like the fact that our #1 offense is practicing vs our #2 defense (which is better than most #1’s) and vice versa for our defense. This can only help us prepare for the tough road ahead. I can’t wait for #1 O vs #1 D in goal line drills during camp!!!

Ok OK…..i want some to tell me how Stafford did not make the SEC list for clutch players to watch for in 2008……bring on Florida fans, but here is what clutch means ok.
ok let’s get one thing straight. what is more important individual awards like the Heisman, or winning the big games in the “clutch.”
What has Tebow accomplished as a true starting QB with the game on the line?? How many game winning drives have Tebow orchestrated down the stretch??
Three of the four games Florida lost last season they lost by a touchdown or less (Auburn 20-17, LSU 28-24, UGA 42-30, Michigan 41-35). All but the Georgia game, the Gators had a chance win within the last minutes of the game. But the Almighty Tim Tebow couldn’t put a winning drive together. The Michigan game, Tebow threw 3 of his 4 interceptions of the game came in the last 3 Gator possessions of the game.
On the other hand…..Stafford had the Bama game, the Vandy game and the Georgia Tech game where he put significant scoring drives together that ultimately decided Georgia’s victory.
Tebow may have the hardware, but ask a fan who they would rather have a QB that wins or a QB that has a lot of hype and hardware.
Tebow 9-4 as a starter (55% winning percentage) Stafford 17-4 as a starter ( 77 % winning percentage)
Stast may looks pretty, but mathematics do not lie. We’ll actually see who fares better in the NFL drafts, because the NFL looks for winners not flashy pretty boys.

AGTfan, sorry for spike and all the other idiots that are Dawg fans. Unfortunately, when you have a fan base as large as UGA’s, there’s always bad apples, and they seem to stick out the most.
Time for the Dawgs to earn their ranking. It’s on the players, and the glory is their’s if they do it (not the fans). I challenge all Dawg fans to cheer on their team no matter what happens this year. No booing at Sanford when we’re down by 10 in the 2nd quarter or some lame @$$ crap like that. Be loud and support our team (Spike, I’m looking at you. By the sounds of it, you’re one of the bandwagon guys that booed Mo-Ma a couple years ago).
I’ve never been so embarrassed to be a Dawg fan as the day we lost to WVU in the Sugar Bowl when UGA fans were trashing Shockley (the one who carried us that year) in the 1st quarter of what was almost one of the greatest comebacks in bowl history.
Go Dawgs.

While it feels good now. The pre-saeson coaches poll #1 team has only gone on to win the National Championship once in the past five years. USC did that in 2004. In fact if you look at the pre-season top five over the past five years, out of 25 teams only 10 of them have gone on to finish in the final top 5 coaches poll. Let’s review the math; 20% on National Champonships and 40% to finish in the top five. Vegas has the Dawgs 8-1, OK is 6-1, FL 5-1, and USC 3-1. That being said, the Dawgs are loaded! Their biggest opponent will be themselves. Go Dawgs!!!!!!!

What happens during the season and how it all turns out in December and January is all together another story but for now it’s right. And I’m excited and punped about it. I’m always excited about the up-coming season regardless of expectations but this makes it more exciting it seems. I only hope the coaches are right! I’m ready for it, we’re all due I think! Regarding the Stafford/Tebow debate, I am a big Stafford fan, but also keep in mind he has had the services of the likes of Thomas Brown, Lumpkin, and a kid named Moreno….the same cannot be said for Tebow. If Florida had ANY other running threat other than Tebow last year, they probably beat Auburn and LSU.
I look for Matt to take a big step forward this year from a production stand point as well as a leadership standpoint.
It’s clear just from the numbers that it isn’t even close between the two, but if Stafford leads us to the SEC and/or BCS Titles, then we have some valid points to bring to the discussion.
Regarding the #1 ranking by the coaches, I think it is deserved. I do think we are the best team in the country, but as to whether or not we end up in the BCSCG, we’ll just have to see. I would think if we win the Conference, we should be there, but I doubt we go undefeated…that schedule is just too tough.

I’ll even concede that it was fairly jerky for me to come on your blog and take a shot at your fans. I’m not sure what got into me. (Maybe it was that “Good Old Fashioned Hate”.) My intent when I started was to compliment your team.

gator06’ although your motives were suspect, your comment about only place to go is down, IS the whole point of wanting to be ranked #1. I assume you mean, if UGA loses a ballgame, which is highly likely, they can only drop. Now would you rather your team drop from #1 or drop from #5 if that happens? Its a pretty simple formula.
And who exactly are these teams on our schedule that will JUST NOW be highly motivated to beat us?

For instance. 9-4 record WINNING percentage is: 5wins/9total games=0.5555 or 56% 17-4 record WINNING percentage is: 13wins/17total games=0.7647 or 76% So who ever is making Fun of ugarulz44 math stating Tebow’s winning percentage is 69% instead of 55% and Stafford’s is 80% instead of 77% is the REAL person that need’s to take a math refresher course. The Georgia Bulldogs CONTROL OUR OWN DESTINY.
With the BCS USA Today Coaches’ Poll now out for 2008-2009, only UGA and Southern California control our own destiny. No one else does.
Florida certainly does not. Even if Florida beat UGA, Florida would require several other teams to Lose for Florida to get in. Ohio State and Oklahoma would both also have to Lose; or, Southern California would have to Lose; and, of course, if UGA were to beat Florida yet again, Florida would be out even if Florida and UGA Won every other game.
This is the value of the Preseason Polls.
This is why people hate the Preseason Polls.
Who did Steve Spurrier vote for in 25th place on his B.S. ballot because it absolutely was NOT DUKE.
There are Five (5) SEC teams ranked in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 18 teams. UGA at 1, Florida at 5, LSU at 6, Auburn at 11, and the vols at Number 18 as the dead last worst ranked SEC team. The Georgia Bulldogs play all of these teams.
There are Seven (7) SEC teams ranked in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 27 with Alabama at Number 26 and South Carolina at Number 27. Both of these teams could move into the Top 25 at game time against UGA, as we play both of them as well.
Mississippi State 41 and Kentucky 42 are both listed in the Coaches’ Poll too, and UGA plays Kentucky as well.

Georgia Tech made the USA Today Coaches’ Poll at Number 51, fifty places worse than UGA. And, we play them too.
Arizona State is Number 16 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll and we travel to play them in addition.
That’s 9 games against USA Today Coaches’ Poll Preseason Opponents, not counting The SEC Championship Game UGA has been to 3 of the previous 6 seasons winning 2, and not counting the BCS Bowl Game of which Georgia has been to 3 of the last 6 and won 2 of those as well. With those games, that is 11 games this season against USA Today Coaches’ Poll opponents UGA will have played this 2008-2009 stellar campaign.
We also play 9 games this season, not counting the SEC Championship Game and not counting the BCS Bowl Game, against former College Football National Championship Winning Head Coaches.
It is the 1st time UGA has ever been ranked Number 1 in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll, ever, and the Coaches’ Poll is the 2nd oldest poll still in use today in college football.
This also marks the 1st time UGA has been ranked Number 1 in the Coaches’ Poll since 1983. twenty-five years ago.
Coach Richt has received a lot of Love, as the 4th Most Winningest Active College Football Coach at 72-19 in his 1st 7 seasons since Vince Dooley hired him.
Which is the Number 1 Football Conference yet again this season, as every season ?
Who plays The Best College Football Schedule this season of all the Top-Ranked Football Teams again, as it was last season too ?
Duh.
How that is a mixed blessing for UGA College Football fans, one can only wonder.
Now, that’s EXCITING, no matter what the AJ-C numbskull “sportswriters” say.

I don’t think the #1 ranking makes a difference at all when it comes to the bull’s eye. The OOC schools will be gunning for UGA simply because it’s an SEC school. The other SEC schools will be gunning for UGA because they think UGA is overhyped. Might as well be ranked #1 if everybody wants a piece of you anyway.
I think CMR will continue to keep the guys grounded with his one game, one play philosophy.

Chip- Could you tell Jenna that an incoming GT freshman’s take on UGA being overrated is a “little” nonvalidated . Why didn’t she ask a GT player’s little brother “Bubba” about his opinion. Just because he can’t pronounce 2-syllable words shouldn’t matter. Where did she get the idea to use football-ignorant people for an opinion? I thought that reading her Article, Some Fans Think Georgia Is Overrated, would present some info That I hadn’t availed myself, but imagine my surprise to find it was more like a “Man On The Street” interview at the GT Student Center. We have heard from the DivI Coaches as to their opinion of the best football team in the country, but an incoming freshman to GT has a publishable opinion that differs?-Hello! Jenna, I’m sorry your editor gave you a publish-or- perish order. Your article title is bogus and misleading. I’m blogging here because Chip has expertise on UGA Sports that I hope he will share with you. He at least knows that the word “expert” is composed of two words. The “ex” is an unknown quantity in mathematics and a”spurt” is a drip under pressure. Please don’t add a “tease” to the word by writing uninformative articles with attention-grabbing headlines.

I loved the comments by the GT freshman. Uga did NOTHING last year. And seriously, have some school pride for goodness sake, if you are going to get quoted in a local newspaper. The best thing we did all year was to beat a bad team that was much better than yours? As if beating your team was a non-event? uh huh…Thats is some serious wanting to curse UGA at all cost there sport.
camille, help me with that math here. If some team is ranked #5 (better starting place to you) and drops a few spots to say #9 or #10, that is going to end up better than droping down to from #1 to #5 if they suffer a loss, and then have to climb back. Did I misread that?
I believe that the more weeks that we can stay #1, the more vested in that opinion voters are going to feel. I can’t see any voter wanting to come out and say “ok I voted them #1 for all this time and now they lost a tough game in a tough schedule, so I have not known what I was doing for half a season”. Thus a potential drop not very much. And remember, the rest of the top 10 will be accumulating losses as time goes on as well.

I love our Dawgs, don’t get me wong, but I could give a crap about the preseason rankings. Ask Michigan last year. All I care about is how we finish the year. A lot of things have to fall into place to win a NC. Look at Auburn a few years back. How in the heck can you keep that team out of the NC game. That one still blows my mind.
Some luck, staying focused every game and staying healthy will be the key. It’s just nice to be in the running for a NC. Now let’s finish the drill!

I am astounded that I have to correct someone on this - Tebow 9-4 record means out of 13 games he has 9 wins, 4 losses - winning percentage of 9/13 or 69.2%. Stafford’s record 17-4, 17 wins, 4 losses, total of 21 games (that is 17+4 = 21 just to be clear)….so winning % is 17/21 = 80.9%. Come on guys….

Yes, I do think they are very much in line and I’d be willing to bet that the arrest made in the past few school years for public urination compared to this ONE football player does in fact statistically hold up. I do however expect these guys to know that have a lot more at stake than the general student population, so its a lot more disappointing.
BTW, your nick scream of a totally objecting viewpoint on the way.

Well AltamahaDawg sir, you cannot mitigate what has continued to happen over 50 times in the Coach Richt Era and that is that yet again at least 3 more Georgia Bulldogs and 1 former player kicked off the team were out getting drunk at places like the Library bar and contrary to what you lie about to cover up were involved in a bar brawl, fought themselves, urinated in public, were public intoxicated and arrested.
If you want to stop this kind of stuff, quit making excuses for the Number 1 Football team in the nation and demand that the line in the sand must be drawn.
Henson, Dowlin, Baldwin, Lemon (who was kicked off the team) and others also at the hospital destroying property are all at the wrong place at the wrong time involved themselves in illegal goings on that will require all to be suspended.
Oh, so we look at it and say one is a senior offensive lineman in the rotation on the offensive line and our long-snapper and Donovan Baldwin are the only 2 who really play much ?
Oh, no arrest of Baldwin or Dowlin…yet.
What in the name of God were all these players doing out what ?
Celebrating being ranked Number 1 ?
Is that the story you try to cover up ?
Or, is it the story that now we add to the 50 Suspended by Coach Richt since December 20, 2000 when he became our coach ?
I’m fed up with it for one, and will not meekly attempt to cover it up and mitigate what is a total embarrassment.
Do you want me to list for you the now over 50 suspended players on the football team at UGA in the Coach Richt Era ?

Here we go. Now Richt will have to come up with a different shirt color,an endzone run,or some other gimmick for every game to keep the boys “high”. Plus us fans are addicted to them also. If nothing spectacular happens each game, will we will be disappointed and wanting more? Let’s get back to earth, keep Richt’s head out of the clouds, and just play football. the rest should take care of itself.

Cuz, I agree with Aville. This behavior is inxecusable. On the weekend before fall practice? Please! How often has Coach Richt talked about focus? Do these guys seem focused to you? Henson and Baldwin were given a second chance and They blew it. Give Them Their walking papers. We will be short of recruits next year, take Their scholarships and give Them to someone that wants to play football. Let these birds party at home. As far as I am concerned any other player that was hanging out in a bar with Lemon can go too! The University of Georgia represents Me and every other Resident of this State, and by God I am sick and tired of reading crap like this every other week! Enough is enough! I want the bad apples removed from the Institution that takes My tax money and My donations. If it costs Us a run at the title this year then so be it.

I just love the head lines…2 more uga players arrested;that makes 8 so far. I guess you can say they are #1 as far as how many have arrests the team has had before football season. You cannot keep turing a blind eye to thses football players behavior. When will the SEC organization start fining uga for their behavior? It seems like the coach does not have “his boys” in line. Make them accountable for their behavior, don’t just slap them on the wrist & say “no no, do not do this again or else”! I will never like the uga football organization just becasue of this reason. WAKE UP FANS!!! If this is the best you can do for a football team, God help you!

Everybody needs to calm down, Coach Richt will deal with these issues appropriately. They (the coaches)can not sit on these guys 24/7, the players themselves and leaders on this team need to step forward and take responsibility for policing themselves. As for this being embarashing it is to those involved and as for those making excuses there are no excuses as these may be immature young men acting like spoiled brats they still need to learn that they are under a microscope and they need to act accordingly.
Personnally when I was at Georgia the legal drinking age was 18 and we all partook in drinking adult beverages and I seem to remember a bar brawl with at least 14 or was 15 players being involved. BTW we didn’t start the fight as it was started by a bunch of fraternity brothers making some deragotory comments about our mothers. None of us got officially arrested but we did get to ride back to campus where Coach Dooley, Russell and several other assistants were waiting. We all had to do blood and guts then run the hill, believe me it didn’t happen again. I have never been as sick, sore and tired as I was after that unfortunate incident, but I learned a valuable life lesson. As for Henson and Brown this is their second offense and IMHO should be kicked off the team if not out of the school. Now lets get back to talking about football.

A-ville Ranger’s first and last sentence could read about many a program. In retrospect, the latest incidents may do more to secure a focus for UGA in 2008 than to destroy it. Learning by example isn’t as painful as learning by experience, although those left standing will now have to gut it out for the misdeeds of a few…

Roswell Ed, FYI, Henson is white, as are Boling and Munz. This is not a racial issue. Using racial slurs on an open blog makes it appear that You are the one that has lost control. I don’t want this blog to become full of hate and race baiting like the Falcons blogs did during the Vick fiasco. I know You enjoy posting on this and other sites. I am no Tech fan, but to say I would never let one of My kids go there would be stupid. I have two Daughters and I supported both in Their college choices. Neither wanted to go to a large school, prefering smaller schools, Mercer and Gardner Webb. You might as well support Them in Their choices. A-ville, I’m a little surprised at your comments about Sturdivant and Anderson. Are you saying that it was not handled properly? These latest knockleheads out drinking the night before camp, already with one strike, I don’t any any problem with kicking off the team, But I think that cleared up just as it should. Are you concerned they didnt learn anything from it? In fact you are indicating that that actually indended harm as matter of culture? Do you know something we dont?
AS I’ve stated before, the entire episode was caught on tape and the one person you know damn well saw it and dug into in depth is Coach Richt. I think he is in a pretty good position to just who intended what. Have you EVER seen him take an action on such issues that wasn’t spot on?
The other person who saw the tape and looked at both sides was the UGA attorney, and I have never seen Ed Tolley come out and publically defend any football players in trouble. He doesnt seem to me to be a stupid man, apt to go out on limb representing the state university and all.
The “lesson” for them is the same as the lessons every single grown man in here has learned a few times, be careful what you say and do, especially cutting up, as you never know who might get offended. And might I say, our lessons in that were far less severe as landing in a police car and on the front page. Those boys already paid big time.

First, frankly, what the heck is a 25 year old dude on the team for anyway. Just a little advice for Henson: its time to get out in the big ol world and get a flippin job.
Second, now that camp has mercifully started, they can keep all these guys out of downtown. That probably needs to be extended over into the season somehow.
I can only imagine how this started… so you guys are number 1… you ain’t %$@%, etc. And rather than walking away, somebody starts something and beer bottle flys..
What the heck is Michael Lemon doing.in the middle of all this The one thing that Richt has got to understandis that he can help a guy find another place, but there probably is nothing gained by that guy still hanging around town and going out with “his boys.” At this point, Michael ain’t got much to lose and I wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t right in the middle of all this with some of the other football players coming in to stand up for him when some jacka$$ got in Michaels grill for his issues….

R-Ed, You were out of line using that “j” word. Not like you to stoop to that level, if it was you who actually posted that. If it wasn’t you, then AJC needs to look into that. However, CMR is losing control of his program. To have these latest incidents right before the start of practice is unacceptable. These things have a way of negatively affecting the team, so he better pull the reigns tight or their play will suffer on the field.

I thought that Baldwin deserved more like a four game suspension for the DUI. I believe that this is a serious crime because innocent people can easily be hurt or killed. His suspension was weak in my opinion. It looks like it won’t matter much since after this lates brush with the law, he will be kicked off the team.
The other suspensions that Richt has meted out seem to be solid, but I thought the Baldwin one was weak.

Put any 100 college students in a group and see what happens in 4 years. Now, I don’t condone stupid behavior, but I understand it. It’s going to happen. It happens at every university across the nation. Yes, these scholarship guys are freakin idiots. If they got a pass on one incident and screw up again…..they’re off the team and out of school….PERIOD!!! I don’t care if they are 6 star players…..you’re gone. I’m getting the feeling that some folks may be right, Richt and the team leaders are not being the leaders they need to be. Every single player on this team has got to understand they are now under a microscope. There is no room for error. If you want to drink, then dammit do it at your apartment and don’t freakin leave. Boling wasn’t convicted of DUI. The policeman in Alpharetta who pulled him for DUI did not have a clean probable cause case so plea bargaining to reckless driving made sense for both sides. Boling is out for one game instead of two and keeps his license. The Alpharetta police didn’t have another one dismissed like they frequently do when challenged. I didn’t see this reported in AJC but perhaps I missed it.

It is sad to see any students get arrested but we should wait until all the facts are in and handle the situation properly. As for being #1 to begin the season, thats where you want to be because if you do stumble and have a bad game your still in the thick of things and in LSU’s case you can lose 2 games and win the national championship, where if they were not ranked so high last year to start the season they would’ve watched someone else clobber Ohio State to win the national championship. People say anking pre-season ranks dont matter and thats BULL**, unfortunatly if your a lesser rank school its nearly impossible to win the National Championship because of the numbers and politics. Anyone #16 or below can only hope to win their conference. Rankings are a lie Playoffs are needed. If we went by rankings in the Pros the Giants would’ve never played the Patriots. The only Playoff system is to have the 6 major conference winners, the #1 Mid-Major, and the #1 team who didn’t win their conference or “wildcard team”. Seed them 1-8 and play it out. Get rid of these bowls with 50 words in them that nobody except alumni and gambling addicts even watch.

UGA should enjoy their #1 ranking while it last. It’s just another year of the ridiculous “it’s our year boys”. If I had a penny for every time I heard a UGA bandwagon boy say that I would be a rich person. If by some chance UGA gets through their schedule, wins the SEC outright, and wins the national title game, I will be the first to tip my cap. However, you have several teams on your schedule who will work you good this season. Florida being one of them. The “easiest” game you have on your schedule is the opener against the under dawg Eagles from GSU. And what’s sad is your players are turning their nose up at those guys from Statesboro. I would watch out. They may not beat you, but they are very capable of keeping it close enough to prove you right out of the number 1 ranking. Hatcher has the ability to spread you out. He may not have the depth you have, but the numbers show they match you speed for speed. Remember Athens, pride goeth before the fall. As arrogant as your town is, you may have a special falling coming your way on the footbal field!!
