UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Fullback a big concern for Bulldogs

Today we will begin to take a position-by-position look at the 2008 Georgia Bulldogs. We won’t necessarily do this every day but fairly regularly between now and the start of the actual season.

I figured we’d start with the fullback position, since that is one of some concern due to Brannan Southerland being out for the first few games with a leg injury and Fred Munzemmaier being suspended the first two. That would be a major issue if Georgia was opening with Arizona State or South Carolina. Less so, I think, with Georgia Southern and Central Michigan. But don’t be fooled, those first two opponents can play and will be supremely motivated.

And fullback is an extremely important position in the Dogs’ offensive scheme, particularly under coordinator Mike Bobo. Remember how much they ran the ball with Knowshon Moreno and Thomas Brown last season. Go to Youtube and take a look at the highlights of their best runs. Chances are you’ll see number 36 clearing out a linebacker or safety to lead the way.

Obviously Georgia will turn to redshirt sophomore Shaun Chapas (6-2, 236) to fill in for Southerland. But “fill in” is probably not a fair assessment since Chapas played a ton of ball last year. He played in every game, finishing with 11 carries for 41 yards and 3 catches for another 22 yards. And the Dogs often lined up with two fullbacks in the backfield in short-yardage situations, with Southerland in front of the tailback and Chapas on the wing.

Based on my own observations and my conversations with coaches and players, I believe Chapas is more than an adequate replacement. I think he’s really good and very much in the mold of the fullbacks we’ve seen under Richt (Jeremy Thomas, J.T. Wall, Verron Haynes). In fact, Chapas, who has worked some at tailback the last two seasons, is probably the best runner since Haynes and supposedly has real good hands. But it wouldn’t be wise to think anyone would not be a downgrade from Southerland. That kid, who I believe will be back by Game Four, is one of the best in America.

The problem is after Chapas. With Munzemaier out, there are no other scholarship players. As a result, the Bulldogs moved walkon linebackers Benjamin Boyd and Justin Fields over to fullback. Boyd, a senior, has been a terrific and valuable special teams player for the Dogs. He is listed at 6-1, 210 but there’s no way he doesn’t weigh more than that now. You can tell they got him in the weight room and trained him as a fullback. I bet he went up two neck sizes. Fields (6-1, 244, RSo.) was already built that way. Georgia has a couple of other walk-on freshmen in Josh Sailors (5-11, 220) and Josh Bagby.

The key here is keeping Chapas healthy those first few games and there are certainly no guarantees of that at such a contact-oriented position. So a position that would be a huge strength with everybody available is one of the Bulldogs’ chief concerns heading into preseason practices.

Chip, Thanks for the discussion on one of the few positions that has a lack of depth on this roster. Hopefully Chapas will be able to hold it down and stay healthy until Munzenmaier gets back… Do you think that Munzenmaier will be a “troublemaker” that we shouldn’t rely on, or was it one of those young idiotic mistakes that we’ve all made? Either way I think that Chapas is a bit underrated at the position, but will be praying for a swift return for Southerland.

UGA will be okay, good coaching and good history at the fullback position.

Chip,

Thanks for the excellent article. I am no longer concerned about FB. Only concern no is with the Placekicking- big concern with that position. To many games on that schedule look like 3-5 point games (if you are a betting man).

I definitely think Southerland is the best fullback we have had under Mark Richt. Verron was a better runner, but Brannan is a mobile offensive lineman and I enjoy his pancake blocks most heartily. Chapas adds an interesting dynamic, especially in the first few games, for throwing more to the FB out of the backfield. The kid has some moves. Hopefully we feel confident operating out of a single set more for the first 2 games.

Is there any possibility that we would use the tight-end as H-backs or, dare I say it, see a two back set with Caleb and Knowshon or perhaps even Samuel (or Kalvin)?

Chapas is a good player, we might see some new plays designed to take advantage or His running ability. With a whole fall practice to get ready I have faith that the Coaches will work things out.

We know how rough Richt’s crime dogs can be with 150 pound students and pregnant women. In a few weeks, we will see how well they do with opponents their own size.

I think this is a great opportunity to get #24 and #22 on the field at the same time. Watch the old Auburn films and you will see that two good tailbacks in the game at the same time can create a nightmare for a DC.

Southerland has been a go-to guy and sure enough workhorse not to mention another serious offensive threat but I believe we can get by unscathed a few games without him. His hard nosed blocking talents will be missed but I am sure with slight changes in schemes Chapas can fill the need.

I haven’t seen Caleb King yet but Moreno proved last year he is as quick to block as run. We’ll be fine unless injuries hit us hard and early.

chip how do you keep your job, your observations are nutty!

chapas is not the best running fullback since hayes, and i would even say i would much rather have sutherland run since he has good speed and the strongest man on the team.

sutherland will be playing in the NFL next year and he is the BEST fullback in the country, just ask most NFL scouts.

anyway, dawgs will be just fine!

What about Tanner Strickland. He’s an OL, but he played fullback in high school when they needed him. He has good feet and good size. He may be an alternative for the first two games.

The Munzenmaier suspension is one that’s incredibly troubling to me, because am I wrong or is he the first recipient of the Larry Munson scholarship? I want that standardbearer to be a shining example for other Dawgs, not Mr. DUI. Fred needs to get his act together for Larry, if not for the rest of the Georgia team.

I agree with you, Chip, on the idea that Chapas will do very well filling in. Once Brannan comes back, we won’t need to worry about fullback at all this year, and possibly not for the next few years with Munz and Chapas to take up the slack.

Southerland is a Bust. He will Bust open the opponents and, when needed, Bust in for a short score. It’s a shame he Busted his foot but he will be back sooner than expected.

Chapas needs a nickname — sadly I can’t think of any right now. “Buster”, maybe?

Tomorrow we look at Kickers, and predict who will Bust field goals and extra points through the uprights.

Dawgs will be fine for the first two as long as they keep their noses to the grindstone and out of the newspaper. UGA has more than enough tallent to overcome the FB and PK positions against GSU and UCM. However, they will have have to have the kicking game in order by the time they arrive in Columbia. Lowcountry is right USC is the beginning of those 3-5 point games.

It will be interesting to see how the lack of Southerland also affects the goal line offense. He was money from inside the three yard line. Hopefully with all the talent at WR we can score more from outside the redzone.

I came across this old post of mine and thought I’d share it with you all:

“October 9, 2007 5:20 PM | Link to this

Publicy or privately (except coaches only meetings and perhaps even just one on one) CMR isn’t going to say anything that isn’t completly supportive of his assistants. Anything else would be a stupid thing to say. Even if he fired somebody he isn’t going to say a bad word about them, and my strong suspicion is that he won’t fire anyone. CMR has built up a lot of good will so he isn’t worried in the least about being canned anytime soon. I also think he sees these last two years as some growing pains (last year with a new QB and this year with a young OL). You won’t see any major staff changes until after 2009, and that’s only if we haven’t progressed. My guess is that all of you whiners will have shut your pie holes by then.”

Isn’t it amazing what a 7 game win streak can do? If you are interested go back to the blog on that day last year. You’ll be amazed at the level of angst and stupidity coming from many of the bloggers. They were all football gurus and I was a stupid “homer.” I won’t wait for any apologies.

I think we should be fine at Fullback.. I am concerned about our PK. Missed field goals have hurt us in the past… Look what happened in 2006 both Vanderbilt and Kentucky games were lost because we missed field goals and/or points after, in fact most of the losses we have had since 2002 were due missed FGs. We have a highly rated freshmen coming in, but so was Andy Bailey and he was a flop. I know we had no depth at the PK position after last season, what else do we have there?

Chip,

Fullback is only a concern because of the injury to Southerland and Munzemmaier’s two game suspension. Both should be back by the South Carolina game and Chapas is more than capable, as he proved last year, in filling the hole at fullback ubtil then. What I would like an update on is the middle linebacker position, in particular- Marcus Washington? When he was on the field and able to play last year we were a great defense and with out him we were only average to very good.

I met Marcus Howard 2 years ago at the practice fields, and, although he was a small DE, he was much bigger than any of the guys in tech’s photo’s. I know there is a kid that will be a surprise this fall and may come up big at fullback. He gave up scholarships to play at Georgia and is built like a truck. The coaches had him come up early to work out all summer and he’s doing really well. They’ll work him in slow at first but just like Southerland and Curren he is talented enough to play as a freshman. He comes to Georgia from Parkview so is well coached also. If they don’t redshirt him he can contribute.

I LIKE THE WAY RICHT HANDLES YOUR SUSPENSIONS.SUSPENDS THEM FOR THE FIRST TWO GAMES AGAINST WEAK OPPONENTS OR DECIDES HE ISN’T GOING TO SUSPEND THEM AT ALL.I GUESS YOU HAVE TO DO THAT SORT OF THING WHEN YOU WANTTO WIN AT ALL COSTS.

Hey Barney Fife… We know that Trial lawyers love it when Phil comes to Bama, and we also know UGA fans hate it when Phil come to Georgia and hangs 51 on their home turf

Chip- Sorry I missed your story yesterday. Looked for several hours after the stated posting time because you gave a heads up in your last story. Good observations, but no mention that Richt was placing two new players as backup to Chapas. One of the players hasn’t been mentioned yet that I’m aware. I don’t know Fields, but CMR has designated him to practice the fullback position in fall practice. I have advocated that UGA fans should learn the players at least 2 deep at each position, especially Defense. Now I have to live by my advice because I’m unfamiliar with him.

I think that it is great that you and “Mr.CFB” are going to highlight players until season starts and these positive stories will be followed zealously by UGA fans. Someone has their head on straight because your staff noted the detailed interest of many bloggers who refuse to pay a subscription to various web sites in order to get this info on your own team. It just opens a portal and fills a need most fans have probably searched for on various websites.

The blogs concerning the kicker seems unwarranted since we recruited and got the best one out there. Backups are also there. That part of the game is very important to us this year and I feel it has been addressed. Where is the angst coming from? Perhaps there is info that few people can obtain OR perhaps the negativity is coming from nonfans of UGA with a contentious axe to grind. CMR has the pulse and he has always been open. Right now he is making sure no player thinks he has a lock on any position in order that he gets maximum focused effort during fall practice.

Looking forward to your next story. Sleep well UgaVI and thanks for the memories. Knowing Urban(and he says the team also) is continually thinking of “the dance” warms the heart of this old fart. Boy, he’s going to hate UgaVII. Could we teach the “dance” to our new mascot in time for the game?

smyrna man,

We love it when Phat Phil can hang 51 on us but can’t win a SEC Championship game anymore.

Chip- Damn! I reread your story after posting the above comment. Big as day you had posted Fields’s name and a little info. My bad. I’ll be contrite and change my name to Alt Zeimer. Where am I and what day is this? Did I miss the whole season? A little bit of that advice you gave a blogger about reading comprehension can be passed around to several of us!

Barney Fife… 51 at the end of ‘06 or 28-0 at halftime in ‘07 which beating do you prefer? Also at least our NC Trophy is still shiny.

Barney Fife is slightly confused and absolutely right. UT hasn’t won the SEC in nearly a decade, but he really doesn’t love it when we hang 51 or 35 on ‘em…UT held the key to the East last year. This year may be no different…At this point, JAX is just another game UGA has got to win to take the East…

Of course UT is the gate keeper to the east. Beat Fla early and we are in the drivers seat

Fullback problems will be the least of the Puppies worries when they come to Death Valley. You butt lickers have some time to re-group and try to keep the game competitive though.

Gen, with all due respect, and please do not cut off my weekly deliveriess of sipping solvent from Jr johnson, no way we lose in Athens this year. I just do not see it happening. If you had the same team and the same coaches besides the Great Pumpkin, I would give you fifty, oh what a bad call, fifty. Just dont see it with your changes. Good luck as my friend, other than then.

Mark,

The concern is that with such a big season on hand we are having to rely on a huge unknown in this department. Also the last time we gave out a scholarship to a kicker it was Andy Bailey and we know how that turned out.

Also the kid can hit 59 yerders all day long on the wider goal posts in highschool, but can hit consistently hit a 40-45 yarder in college? This is my overriding concern.

GOOO DAWGS!!!
