UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

SEC meetings kick off preseason football
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’m about to hop in the car and head to Birmingham for the SEC preseason football meetings, otherwise known as SEC Media Days.
The first four teams and their coaches to take the podium this afternoon are Florida (w/ Tim Tebow and OT Phil Trautwein), Mississippi State (w/ QB Wesley Carroll and LB Jamar Chaney), LSU (w/ C Brett Helms and DE Tyson Jackson) and Vanderbilt (w/ S Reshard Langford and WR George Smith).
I’ll be providing blog updates here of interesting news and tidbits but let me know if there is something specific you want to hear from any of these folks and I’ll try to find out.
Georgia, which is bringing Mohamed Massaquoi and Jeff Owens, is up tomorrow morning. Also up on Thursday are Alabama, Ole Miss and Tennessee. Auburn, Kentucky, Arkansas and South Carolina round it out on Friday morning.
We’ve got a lot of good stuff coming from Tony Barnhart and me the next few days so be sure to stay tuned. With this, preseason football is officially off and running.

Any word on the Anderson/Sturdivant, “situation”. How severe ARE the suspensions and is there the possibility of expulsion. O/L is the “key”. Also, has Boling fully recovered from “mono”, and is he participating in the summer conditiong program. Also, how is the rest of the O/L progressing - specifically Tripp!

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive opened up SEC Football Media Days. His main message was that he declared five years ago that it was his goal that the league be free of NCAA probation. “We came close,” Slive said, disclosing that only the Arkansas track program was currently enduring penalties. “I’m disappointed in us being so close but am pleased with the progress. We tackled the infraction problem head on while enjoying the most successful period in history.”
Also said they will decide this fall whether to start an SEC television network, address access issues for media with players, coaches and practices and trumpeted more stringent academic requirements for student-athletes.

Lane, I think everyone is anxiously awaiting the “video”. But Expulsion for a misdemeaner? The charge was simple battery which is by definition “touching in an insulting or provocative manner”. Different than just plain battery which is causing some physical harm. (even that is a misdemeanor) I’d say proving those guys intended any insult without any resonable doubt to convict is going to be impossible. I’d bet on sensitivity classes, no criminal wrongdoing, and internal penalties for embarassing everyone.

I just read the clip on Oscar Meyer still being miffed at Georgia’s celebration last year. Didn’t that happen in the first quarter? Not like they didn’t have a chance to respond. He was also quoted from his book as writing: “it will forever be in the mind of Urban Meyer and in the mind of our football team” - did you ever see the Seinfeld episode where the guy kept refering to himself in the third person?
reporter: “Urban, how are you enjoying Media Days so far?”
coach: “Urban Meyer likes Media Days. Urban Meyer likes football. Football makes Urban Meyer happy.”

Well, it sure was not off and running with preseason football when the Stinking ACC had their media days. What a joke the ACC is.
Booby Bowden said that the ACC has gotten better, not FSU getting worse and that it is just harder in the ACC now that they joined before the 3 Big East teams did.
FSU has 1 of the worst records in college football, and has had for years and years and years and years now.
7 to be exact and this year is 8.
Not 1 QB since Coach Richt took this gig here, where we have had nothing but great quarterbacks since.

I tell you what I remember forever, the embarrasing lil’ dance the gators tried to do on the sideline as a responce.
That was the just the cheesy book seller taking. The football coach aught to be the one who answers how his team failed to get any better field position when your oponent kicks off from the 7.5 yr line. Oh yea, your team cancells that out with an unsportsman penalty on the run back. and 2 more before it as over as I remember. Keep it up UM, keep talking that crap about motivation from a penalty LAST year. If losing the game didnt fire em up, I’m sure trying to remember that far back will. FYI, there are bulletin boards in the UGA locker room too.

Shane, as always, good to hear that ole south ga humor. Alt, you are correct sir. He got really fired up on the sideline after “it” happened and tried to fire his team up, but it just didn’t look right. To all the good gators on here, I really hope you know it wasn’t disrespect that Richt was doing, but only trying to break the curse. I actually didn’t think he had it in him. I thought he was too nice. Now, let’s say, Ga Tech does that this year to us……I’ll understand. It’s a motivator. It gets the team fired up. If Florida returns the favor with the same thing….I UNDERSTAND!!!! Ya see, it’s not that big a deal with most of my brethren….we know why it happened. Ok, if we were playing at the swamp, and he would’ve told the team to go and jump on the gator(or whatever)on the 50 yard line, then yes, that would’ve been an a*******hole move and should’ve gotten somebody kicked out of the game. You people REALLY need to understand that this was (in the words of Dr Phil) NOT ABOUT YOU!!!! You guys have had some mindset over us for a while, and Richt was just trying to break that for HIS team. It wasn’t classless or crude and he dam sure doesn’t have a history of doing anything like that, and he probably won’t do again. So please just chill out over that. I know you gators want revenge, and the DAWGS know it too.

Zeb- a person who constantly curses is one with a limited vocabulary. While you get out the dictionary, I’ll school you some more on Jawga history. Only once in Georgia’s history have they withstood the pressure when highly rated. Teams like Southern Cal, Notre Dame, and Alabama can teach you what it’s like to be expected to succeed and follow through.
Everyone will be looking forward to your crow eating post after the season. Barnhart is already giving the Georgia faithful an excuse when you fall short-Tony has mentioned the tough schedule about 15 times and the season hasn’t started.

UNDEFEATED LAST SEASON, if Knowshon Moreno had run the ball more against the vols and against Spurrier ?
Buford, sir, UGA finished Number 2 in the Final AP Poll.
Why in the name of hell would I worry about what Coach Richt should have done against the vols or South Carolina, neither of which finished their season anything like Number 2 in the nation ?
LSU did not play UGA.
Not for the SEC Championship and not for the mythical national championship. Good for them. UGA would have beat LSU in the SEC Championship and anyone who saw that game that day, knows that even the vols should have beat LSU.
As for the NC, Ohio State had NO DAMN BUSINESS in that game with their soft schedule of for the whole entire season having beat only 1 Final AP Poll Top 25 team, Wisconsin, who in turn beat **NO FINAL AP POLL TOP 25 TEAM, including their bowl game.
Why don’t you worry about the fact that UGA ended Number 2 in the nation instead of trying to figure out how to make it look like UGA blew it ?
It is quite apparent to all of us that UGA has the longest Winning Streak 7 of all BCS teams, and that UGA played the toughest Schedule Number 7 in the nation of all Top-Ranked Football Teams - and, that therefore UGA did better than every team in the nation, punctuated by UGA ending being ranked Number 2 in the AP Poll for the season.

At what point does the AJC do something about the Falcons blog? I wrote to Julia Wallace a year ago about the infrequent updates. She said it would be discussed. There seemed to be an improvement. However, unlike EVERY OTHER BLOG on the ajc, commenting is open for a couple of hours and then closed. OR like the most recent one, it never opens at all. Pathetic. This has to be Wyche, right? Reading Meyers comments made me just wanna puke. Comeon, new year, new team. This isn’t last year and if he has to rely on that one incident to motivate his team for UGA this year than he has some serious issues in Gainesville.
Meyer needs to suck it up and move on. Grow up and get ready forthe game this year. He must not realize, but the more cryin he does about it, the more it will motivate UGA also.

Lowcountry Bulldawg-
You said that if Meyer has to rely on one incident to motivate his team for UGA then they are in trouble. SO what would you say if he had to make his team create an incident to motivate them (celebration) and then have a “blackout” (although I suppose they wouldn’t wear black) gimmick to motivate them a few games later? I agree that these were great tactics by CMR…but Im just wondering how come you believe that Meyer using a motivation tactic (such as replaying the tape of the mutts jumping around in the end zone for 2 minutes) to mean that they are in a lot of trouble? Insert foot in mouth

Not really interesting,
Ugh, Meyer is on record (in third person no less) as having said the incident will be on his mind and his football teams mind forever. FOREVER… like a long time. I guess CMR used his motavational ploy pretty well if Meyer will think about the incident FOREVER. Meyer just showed a crack in that armour of his.
Also what are you even bringing up the celebration and the jersey for? Is this a t**-for-tat thing? Are you 5 years old in this argument? Insert mouth open foot…what? Just like Urban, I’ll be waiting FOREVER for your response….lol
By Interesting

Lowcounty Bulldawg-
I will admit that the celebration worked out well, I said that. And if it is bothering Meyer that much, then yes, that will ultimately help the mutts (more than likely). BUT you missed my point. You said earlier
“If he has to rely on that one incident to motivate his team for UGA this year than he has some serious issues in Gainesville”.
I am just wondering why you think that using an incident for motivation means that he has problems? CMR had to CREATE incidents to motivate the mutts last year, with the black out and the celebration (thats why I brought up the blackout, moron). Now it worked out great for them last year, i don’t disagree there. I understand that you hate UF, and urban cryer, but your logic is flawed (flawed logic from a dawg, what a surprise). Meyer has a great motivating tool in the footage of the mutts dancing in the endzone. So he won’t have to pull any gimmicks to motivate them, they will already be motivated from the tapes. Now granted, there is a difference between motivated and angry, and for the mutts sake you should hope that they are angry, b/c teams usually make more mistakes when they are playing for revenge.
So, you only had to wait 23 minutes for my response, not forever. Open mouth, insert other foot.

Guys, the reason UM is still p** is that when CMR and the Bulldogs, in essence, threw down the gauntlet with the celebration last year, UM turned to his guys and ‘picked it up’. He exhorted the Gators to ‘join the battle’…and guess what? They lost. They had virtually the entire game to rub The Dawgs’ collective noses in it and it didn’t happen…and what’s more if it didn’t happen last year, it damn sure ain’t likely to happen this year. This Georgia team has more talent and more depth than we’ve had in many a year - by far. Florida? Well they didn’t exactly look like Appy State in that bowl game with Michigan (Those jerks, UF, cost me big time in the last year’s bowl pool. I really thought they had some heart, and talent, but nooooo. Serves me right pickin’ the lizards.) Sure, as it turned out, in Hawaii, we were beatin’ up on the Sisters of The Poor, but we looked good doing it. No, UM seems to be whistling past the graveyard with his ‘miffed’ attitude. His team didn’t respond then and I don’t think he’s too confident that it will this year either.
Hey ‘Interesting’…you ain’t very.

Intresting and Lowcountry, if Ya’ll keep it up You wll have more foot,{feet?} in Your mouth than Nick Saban. According to Chip and some of the players the attitude in Athens is much more serious this year. Keep in mind that the Dawgs were extremely young last year. This year 90% of the starters will have gone through the SEC wars at least once and know what They have to do to win. Richt will have something new to use if He has to, after all he has had the whole off season to dream up a couple of ploys. Urban should forget the celebration and move on, that was last year. It would be better for him to worry about getting Harvin the ball more often than to worry about the celebration.
By dale
July 24, 2008 10:00 AM | Link to this
Interesting, The difference is the frame of reference. A blackout, a pep talk, an end zone penalty, all that happens during the course of the game. It has immediate effect. Urban’s remarks are tantamount to Richt saying “guys, remember the black out last year? Use that to get fired up.”
And the end zone dance happened in the first quarter when the score was 7-0, it’s not like it happened as time expired.
