UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Cleaning out the ol’ notepad
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s incredible how fast football season is bearing down on us. At this point it’s like a locomotive running downhill. It will be just about on top of us when Countdown to Kickoff kicks off this weekend. That will be followed very shortly by SEC Media Days, which start Wednesday in Birmingham. As of now next you can expect a new blog here every day of the week. Regular stories and features and news on Georgia will be coming as well. As always, let me know what you’re interested in finding out about and I’ll do my best to get it for you.
OK, let’s get down to it. I need to clean out the ol’ notebook so we’ll touch on a number of things. In fact, let’s number them… .
(1) Countdown to Kickoff: I’m curious to find out how many of you good folks plan on attending this third annual event Saturday on the UGA’s Woodruff Practice Fields. (more info here). This fan event, created by Matt and Jon Stinchcomb and co-hosted by David Greene, has grown into a pretty big deal. I talked to Matt this week and will have a profile on him for Saturday’s paper (should be online Friday) that will include some update on Jon and Greenie, who are still competing in the NFL. Three of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.
(2) Got a chance to talk to basketball coach Dennis Felton — and several other SEC basketball coaches — on the SEC summer basketball teleconference Wednesday. Felton, as ever, remains incredibly upbeat despite the recent losses of two of his players (Billy Humphrey dismissed and Jeremy Jacob transferred).
Felton said his Bulldogs, who won the SEC Tournament this past March, are “in the best place that we’ve ever been” in terms of their ability to compete at the highest level and said their talent level has increased to the point that they should be able to absorb the recent losses. “As we’ve progressed every year, part of that progression has been our recruiting classes,” he said. “I believe this class will prove to fall right in line with that.”
There has been a lot of buzz coming out of summer workouts about freshman Trey Thompkins and the Dogs also added point guard Dustin Ware, 6-8 forward Drazen Zlovaric and athletic wings Travis Leslie and Ebuka Anyaorah.
But the real key to me is going to identifying some core leadership within the team. Georgia lost a ton with the graduations of Dave Bliss and Sundiata Gaines and Humphrey appeared to be the best candidate to pick up that role. It will be interesting to see if the usually quiet and reserved Albert Jackson can pick up the slack.
(3) One last basketball note: I was surprised to hear Felton say he’d be in favor of shortening the basketball season to make it a one-semester sport. I’d definitely be for it.
(4) Interviewed DT Jeff Owens this week and had an enjoyable discussion as always with the jovial South Floridian. Believe it or not he’s even bigger than usual this year, “too big,” he told me as he hopes to lose 10 or so pounds during preseason camp, which I’m sure he will. Writing a Q&A for the coming days so stay tuned.
(5) Coach Mark Richt spoke to the Jacksonville Bulldog Club this past week (he’s in Macon tonight) and acknowledged to the big crowd that this year’s team “has a lot of star power.” But, as ever, his message continues to be to temper expectations and keep them realistic with the challenging schedule that is before them.
“You show them the schedule and let them know that every year we have to earn our way,” Richt told the Florida Times-Union. “I don’t think any SEC team can just pump their chest out and think they’re going to run through the league. It’s just a battle royal every time you go out… . All we can do is win the SEC East,” he said. “We’re just trying to beat Georgia Southern, really.”

The 700 extra tickets for a $10,000 donation each - that’s $7 million. Is that incremental money or did 700 former ticket holders die or otherwise fall off the list?
By Chip Towers
July 17, 2008 10:54 AM | Link to this
Ft.WorthDawg: That’s not exactly how it works. The $10,000-plus bucks is what it would cost for somebody that has never before donated money to the Hartman Fund. But there are a lot of folks who have continued to donate money and raised their cumulative score to the point they may be eligible for extra tickets they’ve been requesting. And one recent trend has been for people that have not yet received tickets to continue to donate year to year to increase their “score” so that they’re eligible for them if not now then eventually. It is important to note, and I failed to mention this in the story, that the cutoff last year was $2,000. So a guy that got in as a first-time donor last year paid only that amount and this year was eligible for renewable tickets for only the minimum donation per ticket $250 to $500 per depending on location of seats. The point is, it’s not always as tough a ticket as it was this year and it is cyclical based on yearly turnover, expectations, etc. Bottom line, UGA’s system rewards loyalty and, of course, money.

Chip, Can you give us an update on weight room numbers? It’s always interesting to hear someone bench 510 ( Ben Watson) or a 200 lb running back bench 425 (Brown). Maybe even give us official 40 times? Just some stats to quench the thirst… Also, can you ask/answer why UGA does NOT have a full time Special Teams Coach? I believe our special teams limit our ability to win games. It seems as if the average starting line for our opponents after kickoff is out past the 30 yard line. And our kickoff return has not been much better. When can we expect, if ever, CMR to give this the attention it deserves? Especially in a season where we have 10 games that could come down to the difference being “special teams”. Why can’t we institute “beamer ball” in Athens??

jferg NC dawg…some of the kick-off problems were related to the new rule of moving them back 5 yards to the 30. Still it’s a great point to work harder on coverage…I held my breath on just about every kick-off last year.

Great point about improving special teams. Could mean 1 or 2 more wins in close games if we can get it right most of the season.

Countdown to Kickoff has replaced the August Picture Day in our family. Buying a ticket that goes to charity has cut down on the mobs that picture day brings. Present & former players have time to pose for pictures, sign, & actually interact with the kids. It’s a quality event that I will continue to support. Go Dawgs!

I won’t be attending Countdown to Kickoff, mainly b/c I have no kids, and that seems to be the focus. It does seem like a great event to support started by some great guys.
How much of a leadership role do you think Terrence Woodbury can take on? A very hard worker and really played awesome in the SEC Tourney, but maybe too quiet? I am concerned about JJ. He seemwd so enthusiastic even on the bench last year ….. maybe he saw Trey Thompkins and freaked.
If Jeff owens is even bigger, he must look even more like Beetlejuice (a great big guy with a wee little head nd a scruff of hair on top). He cracks me up - great player and a great attitude.

jferg NC dawg: Actually they no longer share weightlifting numbers or 40 times with us because of supposed NCAA rules concerns. So youo have to kind of get them piecemeal. But, for what it’s worth, when I was talking to Jeff Owens the other day, he said he recently benched 485 TWICE. He did 535 once as a sophomore but hasn’t really tried to max that much since. But he thought 485 was about as good.
By Chip Towers

NewnamDawgCF: Now that you mention it, Terrence Woodbury is a VERY good candidate to fill that role. Could be the only one really… . And, yes, JJ ran away from competing with Thompkins and others. It’s a shame because he could have helped.

Chip do you expect to see a more aggressive UGA offense in 2008? I could easily be wrong, but it seems like they got conservative at times, last season.
Maybe the use of more 4 WR sets, as well?

Chip I’ve got a few more questions for you.
After being highly recruited out of High School, does Kenneth Harris have something to prove during his senior season?
Will 2008 be a breakthrough year for Israel Troupe and Walter Hill?
Matt Stafford is entering his junior season. Will OC Bobo allow him to do some “Gun-Slinging” at times? This might loosen up defenses and get defenders out of the box, making it easier to run.
Thanks.

Cuz I agree. Hope they don’t overlook anybody. That’s a recipe for defeat. Wish we could speed up that clock. I start suffering from college football withdrawl symptoms the day after the final bowl game. Used to be able to enjoy MLB, during the off season, but I’ve lost my interest in it. Not because of the strike years ago, just because the game bores me.
Back to football…Hopefully all of the breaks go to the Dawgs, this season. I’ve often heard it said, that just being good isn’t enough. You’ve got to have some luck along the way, as well. Is that why ND loves their leprechauns?
Go Dawgs!

Georgia basketball is in the best place it’s ever been? Ha! What a joke! No PG, a Freshman PF and no SG to speak of. Looks like a losing record and a new coach is in order in Athens.
Meanwhile in the city of Atlanta, Georgia State is heading back to the postseason.

This is what I call “maturity time”. With expectations so high, it takes maturity to understand anyone can lose on a given Saturday, and every team has good players because of the 85 rule. Hopefully these terrific young men in red and black, will be “mature” enough to rise to the challenges ahead, realize the opportunity they have before them, and simply MAKE IT HAPPEN! Very few can say they were National Champions. Hopefully every Dawg will be able to, if not this year, next for sure. I think if they are mature, this year and next!

Cuz LOL! How much heat will be on Wei$$, if they don’t have a complete turn around in 08? I hope Navy makes it 2 in a row over ND!
Back to UGA…Somebody asked a great question about Special Teams. This could be an X-Factor, in determining the outcome of games. Hopefully, the Dawgs will shut down their opponents return men. Asher Allen is excellent returning kicks, but he’s a very valuable DB. Do you think CMR will replace him in the return game, for fear of injury?

Chip,
Is that $2,000 for all renewable seats for a first time donor or adjacaent seats? My friend was a first-time donor last year and gave way less (just the minimum) and got two seats, two rows apart. You may want to double-check that figure.

I’m new to the blog and have to say I’ve enjoyed it. I was born and raised in the Classic City right outside the confines of The Campus. It took some time for my brothers and I to realize the importance of Georgia Football on our lives. We were all about 4 or 5 years old when we “came of age” for Georgia Football.
My point is simply this, Much as we all love the dawgs, there is not a better seat than the BIG Screen in the family room. Sure, we miss the excitement and pagentry that are part of the Georgia Football experience. We also miss the traffic, the crowds and the drunks.
I’ve made it to the Ga. Dome for the championships and when the Dawgs play for the NC, I’ll be there. But for the regular season….I’m at the house.

Minookadawg, Harris stepped it up in spring practice and is now listed as starter ahead of Durham. We will see how it works out in the fall. Last year Wilson went great guns in the spring but faded in the fall. With Durham, King, and Goodman behind him there is going to be some fierce competition for that spot. I think Mo-mass will be the go to guy, He earned on the field that last year and has become a leader in practice and the classroom. Everybody else will have to compete for PT. Troupe and Thomas were both good return Men in high school, again competition, though Thomas may be red shirted. Defenses will be keying on knowshon, so I look for Bobo to open it up more, a lot will depend on the O line which is still very young. No seniors and only one jr. The defense should be pretty well set, especially the line and lbs, dbs should be good too, and could be great if Jones continues to mature. The O line remains the question, Who will step up and take Nando’s place and lead this group? Also, Who will take the all important center spot?

zulucanibal: All the indications I get is the rest of Georgia’s signees all will be present and accounted for… .
minookadawg: The thing you have to think about is it’s good to be conservative in football, as long as you are winning. If you can just line up against somebody and run for 5 and 6 yards a pop, then you go with it as long as you can… . OC Mike Bobo is not conservative but I think he is a big believer in a strong running game and it appears he’ll have that again. That said, I think you’ll see the Dogs chuck it around a good bit with Stafford and those receivers. But I don’t think it’ll be a ton of 4 wides because that takes away the threat of the run and play-action… . Funny you should ask about Kenneth Harris because I just interviewed him this afternoon. He said he only hopes to win big as a team and wasn’t concerned with personal accomplishments… . In that vein, I don’t think it will necessarily be a breakout year for Troupe or Hill because the Dogs are so flush with talented upperclassmen… .
Ben Moore: I’m pretty sure Felton was referring to a “best place Georgia has ever been** during his tenure and he’s talking about the types of players he’s bringing in. That said I agree they have some holes… .
Go_Dawgs79, David: All I can say is that $2,000 figure for last year’s new donor is from UGA ticket manager Tim Cearley and I don’t know a better source than that. But I don’t know, maybe he was rounding up or maybe it varies according to seat location and that was the average. I’ll check back with him if I bump into him.

Owley Dawg, I’m with you about watching the games. When I attended UGA, I went to about 3 games before I realized that it was a mess to deal with the drunks and the traffic (I didn’t live on campus). Now that the Dawgs areon TV of some sort for almost every game there’s no need to attend any but the most important games. Replay, comfortable seating, cheap food, and you get to pick who you watch the game with. Can’t complain.

Chip, I understand that the NCAA has taken some stand with weight training -although I do not understand exactly what that is.
I do know that the Iron Dawgs was a great and fun program that the team started under CMR and they released posters and generally made a deal out of it.
Does the Iron Dawgs program still exist, or did the NCAA regs affect it?

Die Hard-on, I’m normally nice to you techsters, but man, put down the crack pipe. I’ll give you this, you may win, but it for dam sure won’t be by 20 points. What are you basing your reasoning on? A new head coach, a brand new offense you’ve never run before, or could it be the new offensive and defensive coordinators??? Or could it be all the high caliber recruits that have jumped ship over the summer? I appreciate your fervor for your jackets, but at least have an honest approach. I’m not going to call you names, but get ready to get blasted for that comment. You can have hope that you will beat us 42-24, but I’m thinkin……..ain’t gonna happen. There’re are a ton of dawgs in Jax just like Hot-Lanta . And no, it’s not just gator country. But it’s not as bad as Atlanta, who plays host to every freakin conference in the country. I love for people to be faithful to their conference, but if your an azzhole, please go back to the state or university you pull for. If you don’t like Georgia, we just don’t need you. I don’t know too many GA grads who had to pull out of the SEC to make money. 10 members? Are you that stupid?? Who’s your team sport??? Chip thanks for the info. Your explanation clears up a few things I was wondering about.
shane#1 I appreciate your input as well. You asked some good questions about the OL. Guess we’ll have to wait a while to see who steps up. Velasco will be tough to replace. Is Chris Davis still the projected starter at C? A lot of folks are excited about true freshman (Ben Jones?), but I’ll reserve my judgement until after I see him play.
Glad that you mentioned Troupe and Thomas on Special Teams. I’d like to see one of them get a chance to be the primary return man. I think AA is too valuable to risk on ST, although he can provide a spark with some exciting returns.
As far as I’m concerned, Coach Felton is doing a great job at UGA. He definitely has our basketball program going in the right direction. There were some issues. They were handled properly and the team in moving on.

” 350 at a meeting of the Georgia Bulldog Club of Jacksonville at the Southpoint Marriott ” packed the Marriott meeting room.
Our OL has never had what we have on this team right now. We are in great shape for this season on both lines.
Georgia Tech, let’s see. Jacksonville State, Duke, Gardner-Webb, and the usual group of small colleges in the America’s Cupcake Conference not 1 single 1 of whom have EVER in the ACC BEAT Coach Richt since he took this gig 20 December 2000. Therefore, based upon this piece of crap SoS and the Strength of Schedule of cupcake city in the ACC, Georgia Tech is going to beat UGA 42-24.
1st you log on as Florida fans, when Florida does not have a winning record over UGA the past 4 years and when Florida played 5 Final AP Poll Top 25 teams last season losing to 4 (UGA played 4 and Won 3.)
Then, you log on as a Tech fan and say that Tech is going to whoop UGA in football. You need a QB and a wide receiver, just 1 mind you of either. Want to share any name for either position who has not quit Tech since this out-of-date offensive mind came to Tech and is forcing Tech to play an offense Nerds just don’t have the bodies to carry out ?
While UGA has been ranked in the Final AP Poll 11 Consecutive Seasons and counting, what has Tech done ?
Been to 11 bowl games in a row.
5 Tech bowl wins and 6 Tech Bowl Losses.
UGA has 9 Bowl Wins and only 2 Bowl Losses.
But, I don’t think the Nerd poster is smoking crack.
I think he is shooting up with Heroin.
Or, part of the football team who played against us after he admitted he was personally setting up the drug deal for 93 lbs. of drugs in the van with his child on his lap on Tech’s campus down there in drug slums of Atlanta.
8 in a row. You’re a joke.

We had a very good OL last season.
Correct me if I am wrong, but the consensus of opinion on this blog this time last too, was that we had problems on the OL.
All we did was go to out and have 1 of the most dominating OL in the nation against a very tough Number 7 hardest in the nation Strength of Schedule.
We gave up so few sacks and opened up such great holes that we rattled off what now stands as the longest winning streak in the country except for 1 cupcake playing team in the entire Bowl Championship Subdivision.
Now, this season, you want to in every single post Shane#1 tell everyone that again we have no OL.
Pardon me.
No hissy fit.
UGA has the best situation possible on both lines this season.
An ex NFL Football player just finished correcting you on it, after I did.
And, you bragged on him and called him your hero.
Mine too.
Our lines are what they are.
I would not trade our lines for anyone else’s lines.

Our long snapper you call our only Senior Offensive Lineman, is in fact a 3-year Varsity Letterman who played 12 games last season, and he is our 4th String Center : Jeff Henson. That is a very capable backup in shotgun, for example.
Now, whose fault is it that he is 4th string ? The fault of all the guys whom Coach Stacy Searels brought in and got so much out of last season when this entire blog except me said we had no OL last season too ? It’s a bad situation that we have 10 Offensive Linemen on this roster who will make an NFL roster ?
Whenever we have 1 who is dead-set going to be in the NFL, you have to whine : “I hope he doesn’t get injured.”
“Or, I haven’t seen him play”
“Or, he doesn’t have the experience to read college defenses like Florida’s for example.”
Good Lord.
Stop and smell the roses.
Stacy Searels has proved himself to you last season, if you would only allow his body of work to speak for itself.
We were much younger last year on the OL and far more inexperienced than we are now a year later.
We redshirted one entire OL class we recruited. There were 7 OL we recruited that season, and we redshirted them every single one.
Now, we have them too.
Let me explain to you about Stacy Searels. He is 1st Team Consensus All-America Offensive Lineman at Auburn. He has coached the best OL in his career there, at LSU and now at UGA. I do believe, no hissing fit (twit), that Coach Searels has the best track record of any OL Coach in the nation.

What does he therefore bring to the table ?
First you cannot talk about Junior College JUCO transfers among the most sought after in college football, as if they have no experience. Not when Coach Searels too has now coached them for two (2) years in addition.
Here is what Coach Richt listed as his Official UGA Depth Chart Spring Practice :
LT 77 Trinton Sturdivant (6-5, 293, So.) 78 Josh Davis (6-6, 293, RSo.) 61 John Potts (6-3, 285, RFr.)
LG 72 Vince Vance (6-8, 320, Jr.) 54 Tanner Strickland (6-5, 328, RFr.) 66 Micky White (6-3, 331, RSo.)
C 63 Chris Davis (6-4, 292, RSo.) 76 Ben Harden (6-3, 310, RFr.) 74 Kevin Perez (6-3, 270, RSo.) 61 Ben Jones (6-3, 300, Fr.)
RG 60 Clint Boling (6-5, 290, So.) 79 Justin Anderson (6-5, 328, RFr.) 73 Chris Little (6-6, 330, RFr.)
RT 75 Kiante Tripp (6-6, 270, RSo.)
It certainly looks to me like Vince Vance is sitting there atop the Depth Chart for Starting Left Guard ahead of a player destined to be in the NFL. You want someone other than Vince Vance and Tanner Strickland at LG ? Love to hear it. Can you share with me a team in better situation than Vince Vance and Tanner Strickland at LG ? I will hold my breath while you have a hissy-fit and find any team in America with better than Vince Vance and Tanner Strickland at LG.
Coach Searels STARTED 2 True Freshmen Offensive Tackles for the First Time in the Modern Era to start last season and you and this blog in its entirety had a hissy fit.

Excuse me.
A football player who is properly coached can start at OL positions every single season at UGA or any other college in America all 4 years, then be drafted in the NFL and play in the NFL. They can play their entire careers at UGA as the Starter from their True Freshman Year to they are Drafted.
What matters are do you have the studs, or don’t ?
We are so good on the Offensive Line, that you probably do not know yourself Shane#1 that we have had Offensive Linemen leave this OL since Stacy Searels took over to begin last season who was a starter and will be a Starter at Big XII school because he would not get the playing time here he seeks.
That’s how good we are on the OL. I would not be surprised to see that player get a NFL paycheck.
We had 3 Freshman Starting Offensive Linemen last season. Did you know that ? Or, just want to sit there talking out of your butt that they are young and never mention they Started last season ? Well ? Which is it ?
They are young ?
Or, we started 3 Freshmen OL last season ?
Go ahead.
We all know.
You can say it.
3 Freshman OL and we had 4.5 yards per rush for the best The University of Ground Attack has done in 17 consecutive years dating back to 1992.
We gave up but 15 sacks all season long.
” Oh, of all positions, you must have experience and not youth on the OL to be any damn good at it, never mind 10 on the roster will be in the damn NFL playing in the league. “
Go have a hissy fit that UGA has no bloody OL and will hurt, hurt, hurt this season.
And, next season.

Well, now that My hissy fit is out of the way, I agree that UGA has the best O line coach in the country. I in no way think this O line has reached it’s zenith. I can access Rivals too, so I do not need the depth chart rehashed for My benefit. The coaching staff will get these guys ready, but will We drop a game or two early, like last year? Now I am tired and I am turning in, feel free to take any pot shots You wish.

Pss-off shane#1. You know nothing with all your tirade that UGA has no OL. Then agree with my every point YOU ASKED ME to share with you.
With 1 Senior OL this year and he you say is the Long Snapper only.
Never mind he played 12 games and provides great leadership to this OL.
This is the biggest Offensive Line UGA has ever fielded.
This is the most talented Offensive Line UGA has ever fielded on one roster ever with 10 who will make an NFL roster on our roster today.
This is the most well-coached Offensive Line UGA has ever fielded as well.
I would have liked to have seen NaDerris Ward stick it out at Tight End, but you said OL, not TE.
This OL this season is MORE EXPERIENCED THAN LAST YEAR’S OFFENSIVE LINE. Go have a hissy-fit.
Chris Davis had 13 Starts last season. Ben Jones came in in the Spring for all Spring Practice with Coach Searels and the rest of the great OL UGA has this season. What ? A true freshman can quarterback UGA, who came in in the Spring too like Ben Jones, but a true freshman cannot start on the OL for UGA who came in in the Spring ?
B.S.
Sorry to give you a hissy-fit.
Most knowledgeable observers figure Ben Jones Starts, or absolutely plays well enough to start right now. What did you see ? He was here all Spring, just like Matthew Stafford who started as a True Frosh at QB for God’s sake.
Clint Boling made All-SEC Freshman Team and had 11 starts. And, Coach Richt lists 2 Redshirt Freshmen behind him who clearly will Start this season. I don’t know what your problem is what with this every single post of yours Shane#1 no matter what else everyone is talking about with just you sitting there saying we ain’t got any OL.
By ............................................BuLLdawg

B.S.
Trinton Sturdivant All-SEC Freshman Team too, started 13 games as True Frosh last year. How the hell did he do Shane#1 ? Well ? Go ahead. I think we all know you know how he did too. Who gives a crap that since 1989 no one ever started at LT as a True Frosh at UGA ? We have good players at LT behind this stud if he gets run over by a damned truck. Give the kid some credit. You will be watching him too every Sunday in the NFL, and when they Draft him in the 1st round, he will play in Game damn 1. “Cannot read NFL defenses” you will be having a hissy-fit about.
What ?
You don’t like Kiante Tripp either without having a hissy-fit ? Kiante Tripp is considered one of the very best both defensive linemen and offensive linemen in the nation. He played 8 games on the OL last season. What in the hell do you want Shane#1 ?
Sitting there having you hissy-fit.
Every post.
Every blog.
No matter what anyone else is saying.
You chime in that we ain’t got any OL.
No seniors.
Then you correct yourself on that. Sort of.
1 Junior. Got something to say about that too, in your hissy-fit. “He’s just a junior college transfer kid” you whined having your hissy fit “we ain’t got any OL” when that Junior played 11 games last season. Well, did you watch him Shane#1 ?
You are going to watch him start 14 games this season Shane#1. You said you wanted experience. Then, we give you a Junior All-SEC player and you what ? Have a hissy-fit he is a JUCO transfer whom you watched play 11 games last season for Coach Searels.
How the hell come you cannot say 1 nice word about Coach Searels and these men who have proved themselves to you ?

“We dropped games last year because of our sorry OL.” “We will drop games this year because of our sorry OL.” “Don’t tel me our Depth Chart; for I know they suck, cost us games last year and will this year again too.”
Waah.
What are you a mama’s boy Shane #1 ?
What Josh Davis wasn’t any good in the 8 games he played last season as a Redshirt Freshman ?
Why’d we play him then, pray freaking tell ?
I guess you know nothing about Hargrave either ? Because you sit there putting down Justin Anderson too. He would kick your butt, but instead he too will just have a fine NFL career and start every game for UGA his entire career.
We go get you 3 more OL in this Number 5 Recruiting Class in the Nation again for 2008 Top 5 Class in America and you have a hissy-fit that those 3 are not worth the damn time of day to even consider either. Redshirt the lot you say. Frankly, the best of those 3 OL is not even on campus yet; so, he might be redshirted. But, if he is it isn’t because he isn’t any good.
It’s because the OL Coach Stacy Searels has been teaching for now 2 years, is in fact chalk full of NFL future OL who will absolutely prove your B.S. put-downs on UGA’s OL this season again like you did last year too undeservedly, so much of a hissy-fit.
Give it a rest.

BuLLdawg, where does all this anger come from? Dude, get some help. Why do you get so offended when someone (Shane #1) raises a few good questions? Coach Searels is an incredible OL coach. Never heard Shane #1 dispute that fact. The point I believe he was trying to make, is that the Dawgs will have to play some youngsters on the OL. Now, put that depth chart away. I know, C. Davis started last year and mainly played the guard position. Sturdivant (great dancer…LOL!), and Boling are good returning players.
But…Velasco left some big shoes to fill. That doesn’t mean the UGA coaches are incapable of recruiting and grooming replacements. I don’t understand your animosity towards fellow UGA fans.
Now, you can cuss my handle with as many #@#$% as you’d like to. I’m sure you’ll find a way to slander me. That seems to be your method of operation. Maybe you’ll just complain that this is an attempt by me, to “flame” you. Who cares? My words, when posted by me, speak for themselves. I don’t say anything I’m not willing to defend, because I take pride in what I write. At the end of the day (arriving pretty quickly for me, but a long ways away for most), we’re all Dawg fans. What’s the point in us trashing each other? This blog deserves better! Unlike many, I’m not cooler online. I just don’t understand why you are so quick to go LOCO. I hope you can find some source of peace in your life and let that anger go. It ain’t healthy.
My response to your oncoming diatribe: BACK OFF!!

Yes, but that’s beside the point.
I think Paul Johnson is the successor to John Heisman and Bobby Ross. He is destined to return the Wrambling Wreck to gridiron glory. It’s been 18 years since we’ve won the National Title, so we’re due. I predict 42-24, but only after Georgia scores a late touchdown during garbage time to make it look more competitive. After all, if Georgia can’t stop Ga. Southern and Troy’s option attacks, how can they slow down Tech’s. THWG!

First the OL, I would like to remind a few of my fellow Dawgs that Josh Davis and Vince Vance were the starters last year in spring practice until they hurt their knees and then Davis also had a shoulder injury in the fall which hampered his progress which gave Trinton Sturdivant and Clint Boling their opportunity. These two made the best of that opportunity and proved that they could play at the highest level and did quite well as evidenced by the Dawgs winning 11 games and finishing # 2 last year. This is the deepest we have ever been on the OL, we are 3 and 4 deep at every position and I’m talking about guys who will be playing on Sundays in the future. The real concerns on this team are still at receiver and Kenneth Harris has never shown that he can play at a level where he is the second or third receiver much less the # 1 receiver. Mo Mass is talented and if he plays the way he did from the Vandy game on then we will be in good shape there. As for Tony Wilson, he started fast but then took that cheap shot- spearing in the South Carolina game and wasn’t the same after, the word is he once again was impressive in the spring. I heard King, Troupe, Durham and Hill were all impressive as well and should see PT. The other concern is injuries which always happen, hopefully we will be somewhat fortunate in this area and will have the ball bounce our way a few times. Go Dawgs

Well, I see He is on My butt again, putting words in My Mouth. I said I had concerns about the O line, especially at center. I never said that UGA had a “sorry” line or that the “sorry” line cost Us two games last year. Matthew Stafford said that the O’s motto in the first half of the season was “fake ‘till you can make it.” That speaks for itself. When you have three freshmen on the O line You will have some problems. BullDawg, when You use quotation marks You should use actual quotes, not what something You made up. What You are doing is dishonest, and it is not a mistake, it is deliberate. You Sir are a liar, and You have the nerve to call War Eagle a liar. War Eagle was one who helped make the SEC what it is today. All SEC fans owe Him and the other members of His generation a debt of gratitude for the college football that all of us so much enjoy. Then Your sorry butt calls Him a liar. You are a scumbag piece of crap and this will be My last response to You. You are not worth it, You sniveling little coward. Hello Gen Neyland and Shane # 1,
I don’t ususally keep track of other SEC school’s OL’s but since you asked Tennessee from what my very close friend at Tennessee tells me is going to be the best they have had under Fulmer, but all depends on staying healthy as he tells me they are only 1 and 2 deep at each position after that there is a big big drop off in ability. Tennessee’s achiles heel is their defense. As for Florida they have some very good OL returning and if they have recovered from their injuries will be very good as well, of course as long as they stay healthy as they are not very deep on the OL. As it was last year their weakness lies with their defense, but my friend at Florida told me his “D” will be much improved this year and he has been right on in his evaluations as long as I have known him. As for South Carolina’s I haven’t a clue as I have no inside info there. I can tell you this Georgia has the deepest OL of any team in the nation. BuLLdawg was actually a little conservative when he said 10 of our OL would someday be playing on Sundays it is actually a little higher than that.
Go Dawgs and Go SEC I can’t wait for the season to begin.

Big Dawg, I am hearing about the Gators “improved” defense. Does this mean that they are going to attempt to tackle Knowshon this year? Last year they just waved at Him as He ran by. Maybe if they actually make a stop Meyer can let Them run out on the field and celebrate making a tackle.

Shane # 1,
Remember Shane by the Florida game our OL and DL had both jelled and were dominating the line of scrimmage and there weren’t very many teams at the end of last season that could have played with the Dawgs. I know there are people on this blog that would disagree but they are not being objective. As for the Gators being able to tackle Knowson, I sure hope they have fits with him, King and Stafford.
Yes my inside source told me that the ship had been righted on defense at Florida, they made the same mistake we did two years ago with our OL when we redshirted a couple of OL that should have played thus giving us some depth. He said he was overuled by his co-defensive coordinator and Coach Meyers last year as they redshirted several guys who would have provided depth on the DL and DB positions and in his opinion would been starters by the end of the year if they hadn’t been RS.

Big Dawg. I share the concerns that Tubbs expressed about installing the spread at AU. He is worried that practicing against a “finess” O will make His defense soft. When a team that hasn’t practiced against a power I meets a team like UGA sometimes They are not prepared. They have a FB and a TE or two coming right at Them and They are not accustomed to that physical style of play. IMO, it is like tOSU, after playing a schedule of cupcakes and only having to get up for one or two games They meet a team like LSU that comes right at You, on O and D. Nobody is trying to fool You, in the trenches it’s Man on Man. The guy across the line wants to whip Your butt, and with a 300lb Man like Dorsey You are up the creek. You are right that UF lost the battle on the lines, I think They will lose it again this year. Everybody except Howard is back on the D line. Howard will be missed, but Atkins and Owens are back, the D line is deep, and I think Tebow will be unable to run this year because He doesn’t have the speed to get outside. You are right about the O line having jelled last year, by the end of October They will have jelled this year. My concerns about the O line were for early in the season, not late.

No matter how many people tell you the same thing, here we are again with you day after day after day after day saying that you are concerned about our OL.
As for posting nocturnal, excuse me sir but your posts speak for themselves as well.
And, as for Albany Georgia, yeah it’s so much better a place to live, raise kids, and make a living than Dunwoody Georgia. Right.
One other thought, now that you have made this entire blog once again into you alone say our OL is a concern, and that is since you say folks posted for you, which of these posts in this blog are by you including the drunk tirade of yours promising and threatening bodily harm hiding behind your keyboard ?

I will tell you this our OL has already jelled as the coaches were actually running 2 first team lines in the spring and a few of the 3rd stringers were impressive as well and were switching them in and out at will. The real concern with this team is overconfidence and at the receivers positions. Will they consitently make the tough and timely catch, that is what concerns me. Anyway it is all moot and/or speculation at this point.

Big Dawg, Richt if stressing to the guys that They focus on the game ahead, and not look down the road. One of the players said last week that right now they are thinking about Ga Southern. Richt has be telling Them that if They take it one game at a time the season will take care of itself. I don’t think They are overconfident, this team just has a swagger and an attitude that I don’t remember seeing before at UGA. I credit Knowshon with developing this attitude amoung his peers. At the Sugar Bowl the team seemed to have a chip on Their shoulder. That is not a bad thing to have on the football field. And I concur, GO DAWGS!!

Is it me, or do people like BuLLdawg always have to argue w/ people, even w/ fellow fans of his own team just to prove he knows(or thinks) he knows more than the rest of us?? Oh well
About the season, coaches always say that their players have to take the season “one game at a time,” but do you really think our guys are focusing soley on Ga Southern and not on down the road at the gamecocks or ASU? These guys aren’t pros so I dont think its possible. That game at USC really scares me, because w/ one loss in the SEC your NC hopes go down the drain. I can’t wait for the season to finally start though.
Is it just me or does it seem like the OLDER you get the LONGER the offseason lasts??
