UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

I, too, would rather write about football

Let me preface my remarks today with one statement: I don’t like writing about arrests.

I didn’t get into the business of sports writing so I could spend every day perusing the police blotter for names of the athletes I cover. I got into it because I enjoy sports and the spectacle of it and writing about the people, places and personalities that encompass that world. My father was a youth-league football coach and played football and baseball and soccer pretty much from the time I could walk until I went to college. And I probably started writing about sports then mainly because I could no longer compete in them.

So that’s just to make it clear to anyone out there who thinks we relish times like those that have befallen Georgia this summer. In fact, I can’t think of any sports hack (affectionate term within the business) that enjoys that side of the job.

That said, it is a necessary part of our work these days. The Internet Age we live in makes for a 24-7 news cycle and virtually all information nowadays is public. So every day I click on a little icon in my browser toolbar that says “jail log” and check to see if any of the athletes that we effectively glamorize daily has fallen off his pedestal (nothing today by the way). I do so with the hope I’ll see nothing. Most of the time, however, the news of an arrest of a football player has already gotten out before I have a chance to click.

That’s been too many times this year. Seven Georgia players — or an average of one per month so far — have found themselves on that jail log. The latest, and the saddest, was Michael Lemon.

By now everybody knows Lemon is accused of slugging a UGA student much smaller than himself and apparently in a defenseless position over a misunderstanding about a girl. That momentary lack of judgment cost Lemon dearly. And while I feel sorry for the victim in this case, DeMarius Jackson, I also must confess I also feel sorry for Lemon.

Lemon, lest we forget, just a year and a half ago lost his mother in a terrible, senseless tragedy. Phaba Lemon, 39, was killed by an ex-boyfriend who burned down the Lemon’s house to conceal the crime. On top of that, in high school, Lemon saw his best friend die in a car wreck. It was way more than any teen-ager should have to bear.

And who knows how much all that hurt may have contributed to Lemon’s actions? That in no way justifies anything Lemon did on that Saturday night in Athens. But you can never be sure how grief and pain may manifest itself in young people. And this story is nothing but sad. For the moment, Lemon has lost a college education and the football opportunity of a lifetime and Georgia has lost a good player.

We also live in a much more litigious society today. Confession: I was attending college in the mid-1980s and was at a party where there were a lot of football players (OK there might have also been some beer). One of them didn’t like the fact that I was dating a girl that he used to date (or was dating, that was never made clear). He confronted me about it and punched me square in the nose when he didn’t like my response. Never once did I consider calling the police or even his coach. Perhaps I should have but it just wasn’t how we handled things back in those days. A short time later he apologized, I accepted and we left school as friends.

The point is, I’d much rather be writing about football. And if we can ever get out of these dog days of summer I hope to be doing nothing but that.

CHIP TOWERS IS THE BIGGEST HOMER IN THE HISTORY OF THE AJC. Never seen such an apologist. Got your pom poms next to your typewriter?

I wish this was always just football also, but, unfortunately, stuff happens. Michael has surely been through much, much more than any young man should have to experience. I wonder if the coach would give him a year to show that he can “stay straight” and then if he does, let him come back to the team? Sure, he made a mistake, but there are times you have to look at all the circumstance.

Nice work, Chip. I think there were some very strong points made in your article, “Athletes not a problem.”

I look forward to the start of the 2008 season. No matter what transpires on the field, at least we can talk about what happens ON THE FIELD.

Chip, I think you make a great point. Sometimes people just need to say “maybe I deserved that punch…”

That said, it appears Lemon did go a bit above and beyond when he broke the guy’s eye socket. A shiner is one thing…breaking a bone is a little much.

All in all though I think you bring some real perspective to this situation. Some of the arrests have been ridiculous and stupid (like Sturdivant and Anderson).

Come on, “Sven,” “Missing Carter.” I was very pointed in saying that it in no way justifies what Lemon did and I meant that. He’ll be punished accordingly. Already has to some extent… . And had I known calling the cops was an option I probably would have because I was mad about getting punched in the nose. It’s just that most of us didn’t think that way… . As for sports writers, I’ve talked to some that cover Florida and Alabama and South Carolina and Tennessee and none of us want to be dragged down with this crap. That’s the point. It happens.

Just how much more can UGA take? 7 players have been arrested & kicked off the team? It does sound like there is a serious problem with the UGA football team!! Coach, WAKE UP!!! You can’t blame it on their age. Quit making excuses for their BAD behavior. I for one am truly ashamed of this team & the coaching.

unhappy fan:

Uhhh…you have a few of the facts wrong. It is true that seven players have been arrested in the off season, but charges were dropped against one of them, and only one of them was kicked off the team.

So the official score is: 6 and 1, not 7 and 7. I’m not saying that particular score is laudable. I’m merely correcting the record. If you want to be “truly ashamed of this team & the coaching” based on the real score, then be my guest…

Underage drinking leads to most of the arrests at UGA, of athletes and non-athletes alike. This is a nationwide problem that has led to serious injury, jail time, and even death for thousands of college students from every state in the union. Be involved in a DUI accident with injurys and You are looking at a felony, if You are lucky enough to survive. If there is a death resulting from the accident You are looking at vehicular homicide. In either case You and Your parents are facing one hell of a law suit. We hear about Lemon and other athletes, how many nameless and faceless students ruin Their lives every year? I know that underage drinking has always gone on, I did it Myself, but now it seems worse than ever.

Hey CMR, if you recruit non-student athletes, you get non-student behavior. Of course it doesn’t take a student athlete to play at Georgia, since they have so many Jock courses designed to keep football players in school. Go Gators, the Top SEC school.

Thanks for an article that shows some heart and sensibility about these situations. You generally give a reasonable, adult point of view about these small things and the bad ones. I hope these kids can leave UGA educated men rather than the boys they often enter school as.

For those of you who call for the harshest penalties for these guys, keep in mind Richt and this program are probably the best chance some of these guys have for a good and/or better life. When you blog as a hater against kids/young men, you probably need to check your own character. I will agree that there are times actions call for harsh penalties, but lets make those times serious. Lemon’s assault charge might be in that catagory but in my opinion it probably shouldn’t cost him a career and an eduction. I hope he learns his lesson and perseveres. I hope the victim recovers without any lasting problems.

Carter: While most of your stuff makes some sense I have to admit you and the AJC, in general come across as JERRY SPRINGER type news sources. I will not believe you if you say you don’t put a little extra into reporting a problem regarding a UGA athlete. You and your newspaper love that little/large surge you get by being out front on bad news. Why couldn’t you have added to your column that the Athens PD stated that the athletes were no more of a problem, percentage-wise, than the student body as a whole. I understand because that would knock some of the shine off your daily jailcheck report.

Chip I didn’t take your blog to mean in any way that DeMarius Jackson should have just sucked it up. Some people are idiots to derive that conclusion. I was in college shortly after you were and you are exactly right- back then, unless it was a fight resulting in serious injuries, you moved on. You didn’t go whining to the police. But nowadays with our litigious society it’s nigh impossible to settle things man-to-man. I want to pound my ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend because of the way he went about hitting on her while we were still dating. He’s a derelict anyway and deserves to be pounded. But the problem is, I know if I beat his @$$ he’d go crying to the cops rather than take the punishment he deserves. Then my clean record with the law would go bye-bye. He of course, with his multiple DUI’s and other arrests, wouldn’t have that concern. Anyway, most of us who read your blog and your necessary reporting of players running afoul of the law know you are just doing your job. Unfortunately too many Georgia athletes lately have not been doing theirs.

Chip, The problem most UGA alums have is that the AJC is clearly benefiting from dragging down college kids just to sell ads on their little web page and news rag. You take the arrest of a player with a “concealed weapon” and drag him through the mud, he becomes a “thug” on these ridiculous blogs and now has to clear his name. The reality is he had a legal weapon in his car in the wrong place and was pulled over for going 10mph over the speed limit or “DWB”. Now, when he was cleared of the arrest the AJC buried the story and still includes him on your arrest docket. Of the 7 arrests, I believe only the “speeding” ticket (10 mph over the speed limit - ye gads what a thug!) and the Lemon case were not alcohol related. Munzimier got arrested for hailing down a cop thinking it was a cab! Shouldn’t he get points for taking a cab?! Yet, Terrence Moore and a lot of AJC writers (not including you) find great glee in taking numbers of arrests, not bothering to look into what’s behind the arrests and try to make our University out to be some sort of problem child for college football. Coach Richt even said to Terrence in his article that our high expectations for this year had nothing to do with the number of arrests. If he wanted to hear what was behind each specific case Richt was glad to tell him but Terrence just turned a blind eye to it and said “whatever the case, UGA needs to get rid of the knuckleheads.”

I realize you finally went in depth with the Lemon case and appreciate that. It takes a journalist that’s true to his trade to explore all of the options. All I ask is you be fair to the players and not just sensationalize these arrests to sell papers. I expect it from Terrence Moore, he’s a hack journalist who is only around to get people upset. Pretty sad career to look back on if you ask me.

The LAWS/ENFORCEMENT has changed, the KIDS have not changed.

I still don’t think walking with a BEER should be an arrestable offense, but it is. So is trying to get a cab after having a few drinks. So goes our society.

I’ve seen ONE major incident out of our football players this year, and that was a fight gone way wrong.

And to the GT’ers posting here, how is that glass house you live in? Are the windows hard to keep clean?

This is a wonderful blog Chip Towers. However, by the time you get to this blog, there are many others who have weighed in on this.

T. Kyle King has many comments on his site for example by all of us.

I would like to weigh in here too, and about the blogs covering this so far.

You asked for explanations. You said we haven’t heard the explanations. You said this was because his side hadn’t yet been heard. You said the reason why his side hadn’t been heard was because they all left the scene. You never addressed why his side would leave the scene. You never addressed why the 6 impartial witnesses all should be considered just only their side, when their signed written statements under oath would lead to all of them being put in federal prison were they as you put forth just their opinion.

You stated repeatedly that Michael Lemon is Innocent until proven Guilty. In direct contradiction with your opinion on all this, The University of Georgia automatically suspended Michael Lemon from participation in sports at UGA. In direct contradiction with your position on all this, you closed for comments agreeing with you or disagreeing with you.

You urged that we reserve judgment and consider all the witnesses as possibly just offering their side of the story.

You cited his leaving the scene as to why his side is not yet presented. You ducked the question of why he left, though.

Now, after Coach Richt was made privy to the Investigation and spoke with Michael Lemon himself personally, Coach Richt has dismissed him from the team and refused to discuss him coming back at this point unless several factors fall into place and at a much later date than now.

At no time have you discussed the $70,000 raised by all of us on the street corners and mailed in for The Michael Lemon NCAA Sanctioned Fund to take care of his younger brother living in Macon with his Grandmother after the murder of their mom and burning of their home leaving them with nothing except his mom’s fiancé charged with 1st degree murder.

The unprovoked nature of the aggravated attack has yet to be mentioned. Why, too, is that ?

There is no indication that Michael Lemon will be allowed to come back.

Nor should there be. I will not ascribe explanations to him coming back. I will not ascribe explanations inconsistent with the statements sworn under oath written and signed for the authorities. I will not defend Michael Lemon.

There have been 50 individual separate suspensions of Georgia Bulldog Football Players by Coach Richt in the Coach Richt Era already. And, also in direct contradiction with several comments by others that it is entirely explainable that a 274 lbs. Football Hulk of a man will not allow a conversation with :”his” girlfriend, it is this very issue at the heart of the entire sordid mess. Mr. Lemon does not own a lady. There is no explanation that includes this being correct, expected, nor stupid on the part of the UGA student cooking at the time seated watching the grill at the apartment pool.

We gave Mr. Lemon every chance in life. UGA did. The NCAA did. All of us did. Quit coming up with inconsistent with the facts explanations for what may have been which never have been presented.

By ............................................BuLLdawg

July 15, 2008 2:15 AM | Link to this

What is presented is that he is kicked off the team. An action I called for by Coach Richt. If you wish to study or discuss the study of the criminal mind, there are explanations for why each did what they did. Alcohol. Drugs. Chemical imbalance. Temporary explanations. A person cannot do serious harm to another.

Coach Richt has made it abundantly clear to all of you that Coach Richt will not stand for it either. Coach Richt has said so from the beginning, as I pointed out.

I’ll not stand for it, nor offer explanations. There is no excuse nor explanation possible. And, you can tell T. Kyle King that he can come over here and read what I have to say about his explanations when there are none, whether he likes it or not. If he had something to say to me, he could have sent me an e-mail. He still can and offer an apology for being wrong and for disagreeing with one who simply does not appreciate providing explanations for what is not explainable. Censorship is not high on my ideals.

Maybe if UGA started recruiting some ‘student’ athletes instead of just ‘athletes’ then the thuggery and arrests would not be there to report on any longer.

It a total embarrassment to be an alum of UGA at this juncture —the UGA athletics program has always had it’s share of problems with arrests, flunk-outs, Jan Kemp, remedial courses, arrests, etc.

It’s why this alum can honestly say THWG from an athletics program point of view. I will always be very proud of my hard-earned degree, but I could give an ‘uga’ about UGA from an athletics standpoint.

Well said Chip. I’ll not comment on the many opinions expressed in response to your very heart-felt piece on this summer’s arrests, especially Mike Lemon’s. I guess I’ll just say that they reveal more about the posters than the kids themselves. Just one caution to all: I recommend not positioning yourselves as mind-readers (that is, saying what was and wasn’t going through Mike’s mind when he exploded on Jackson).

I think that Chip was very honest and forthright in saying that it’s possible to have mixed feelings about Mike’s situation: sad for Mike and his heartbreaking experiences, empathic toward DeMarius Jackson for what appears to be an unprevoked and devastating assault from a very big and well-conditioned athlete, hopeful for both about their futures, and in agreement that Mike needed severe discipline for his actions regardless of his state of mind. I feel that way too. I don’t know Jackson but he sounds by all accounts to be a good student and good guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I hope he recovers and is back in class this fall. I do know Mike and feel terrible about what’s happened. He’s no thug in spite of his thuggish actions. He’s a good student who could never afford UGA without his scholarship. I’m hoping that he can qualify for HOPE money and continue in school if he loses his scholarship (which as I understand it may happen this fall). He clearly needs the support and structure of school and football and the family they provide for him in the absence of parents. I imagine that he could also use some prayers and support from the fan base.

And we could all do without the idiotic name-calling that goes on every time an AJC reporter tries to post something about sports.

Didn’t Lemon hit the other guy 5 times in order to blow out his eye socket? That much violence has nothing to do with internal pain. Richt certainly cannot control the behavior of his players any more than any other coach in the NCAA. However, he can dismiss the thugs and this is a good step in the right direction.

In my opinion, sports are a great metaphor for life. We have gotten way too used to this sort of incident and began to overlook more and more from these punks. Let’s not forget these guys are getting an opportunity that most people would do anything for.

Is there anywhere on the web to get unbiased UGA coverage instead of through rose-colored glasses? I agree with the critics on this board: It’s way to fluffy and apologetic.

I don’t know what has happened at the AJC but the college football coverage in general has gotten MUCH WORSE — much, much worse — in the last year or so. There’s not nearly as much of it as there was — either in the newspaper or on the web. I like the Athens paper OK but AJC really needs a new writer. Hopefully they will replace the one who left with someone who didn’t graduate from Georgia. As a fan, I want coverage that’s fair but not written by a homer.

I’m not proud of my team when someone gets arrested. We shouldn’t be making excuses or noting that, well, the general student body doesn’t get arrested as much. Guess what? The general student body isn’t on scholarship and treated like royalty either. It’s not too much to ask that these guys behave.

Well said BannerHerald… It takes most students (who have to get loans) 15 years to pay them off. I think I could have behaved if I was getting a free ride through college. Instead, I worked night jobs and paid my loans off over time. I am not bitter, because that is what I had to do to improve my life situation. However, these guys are coddled from age 12 if they can play. All they have to do is be decent citizens. No excuses! Is that too much to ask?

I find this article very interesting and right on target about the student-athlete arrest situation at many schools. I went to UGA shortly after Chip and can also attest to the fact that things have changed drastically. When I went to school, the legal drinking age had only gone up to 21 in the last few years. That is why you see so many more alcohol related arrests now. Back then, the police forces largely ignored minor drinking infractions because that’s what they were used to doing from when students were mostly of age. The police, too, are now under much more of a microscope than back then. If they ignore the slightest issue with any student, then something truly bad happens, they’re likely to be roasted in the media, sued, and terminated. I feel completely confident that student-athletes at all schools are probably causing less trouble overall than they ever have. Unfortunately, the information age putting everyone under a microscope, the “let me blame somebody attitude” of many young people, and the sharp decline in stable, two parent homes has, IMO, made this a very different time. Don’t misunderstand me, students need to be punished for their crimes or other bad behaviors; I just think some people need to start remembering the old saying “a few bad apples don’t spoil the bunch” as well as realizing that as much as a football coach might try, he cannot be a perfect father to 125 kids.

Just one example of the craziness - maybe the facts will show it to be more serious, but I’ve asked many women I know about the times they were pregnant, and they said that people came up and touched their stomachs all the time and sometimes it was annoying. However, they understood that there was no bad intention to this, and they certainly never considered pressing charges.

Anyway, I just think that this article does a good job in pointing out the fact that unless we were a witness to what happened in any arrest situation, we can discuss possibilities, but have no business judging anyone. We need to leave that up to the families, court systems, coaches, and GOD.

Come on, people, didn’t anyone read Chip’s article from yesterday? It’s available in the UGA section on the on-line Sports page. If Michael Lemon is found to be guilty of what he is charged with , this is truly indefensible, and I am sure he will be punished appropriately by our Criminal Justice System.

Gatorzone I’m not trying to say he was right to get in a fight but anger is an emotion and sometimes your emotions get the best of you. It was not premeditated but it was definitely wrong and he deserves to get kicked off the team. If you’ve never been angry enough to get in a fight I can understand that because everyone knows that UF folks are as perfect as Saint Tebow. Now Jamar Hornsby using a credit card belonging to a dead student - the day after her death - 70 times - is not based on emotion. In fact the guy has no emotion in his soul to do that.

What the h does win at all costs mean? We had one fight and a few alcohol related incidents. You gators are having a good old time coming on our boards and trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. Just go away.

Chip, this is a good article. The fact that you felt compelled to justify your point of view merely speaks to the likes of the Terence Moore types’ continual view down their noses at UGA. You’ll notice that most Ga Tech fans who post on UGA blogs state that they couldn’t care less about us or our football program, yet they continuously choose this venue in which to spout their distaste for our program and glee when our 18-20 year old young men make bad decisions. This kind of thing happens all over the USA. I am not condoning the behavior, but until I can judge a young man for bad decisions made at such an early age, I need to review that span of time in my own life and realize that I have no basis from which to judge anyone. The Techies stay mad long after they graduate, mainly for realizing that their worst decision at 18 was to attend such a haughty, holier-than-thou institution that would rather point and laugh than resolve their grievance on the playing field.

WHatever… Hornsby was immediately kicked off of the team. I think you misunderstood my intention. I was certainly not throwing stones at UGA, but in the state of college football everywhere. I even said that Richt could not be expected to control all of his players anymore than any other coach can.

It is just sickening to see so many atheletes EVERYWHERE throwing away such good opportunities.

Win at all cost is what pushes most programs. The pressure is so intense that many have to cut corners in recruiting questionalble athletes. (my beloved Gators included) My point is that when these guys do not uphold their end of the bargain, they should be kicked off the team and lose their scholarship.

GATORZONE, I don’t begrudge your point of view. You are a Gator fan who seems to “get it” and as far as I’m concerned you are welcomed to stay. Now, when GATORCHOMP gets on board (if he isn’t already), we will get to see the reverse of your good judgement and unfortunately bolster the sterotype fairly or unfairly applied to ALL Gator fans. I still don’t get why “jorts” are so funny…but it seems like harmless banter. If anyone is “guilty” of wearing them, GATORCHOMP would be a likely offender. See you on November 1st.

Gator, I believe Richt IS recruiting good kids. For the most part they’re just normal college students, most of which stay out of trouble. Lemon’s case is an isolated incident but writers like TM and irrational fans want to tag us as “thuga” when in fact we’ve had one violent incident this year. It has to be hard to recruit guys to play football and expect them to be total warriors on the field and complete gentlemen off of it. To be honest, I only know of a couple of incidents with UF players and the major ones like coke and rape at other universities. I get a little bent out of shape when some of our guys are getting lumped into that crowd because they touched a pregnant belly, went 10 mph over the speed limit, or got busted for underage drinking. I can only speak for UGA when I say our program is NOT a “win at all costs” type of program. And frankly I could give a damn about anyone else’s.

How does that compare with the student body?

Chip, if you didn’t report it, you would probably catch more grief from people wanting to know what happened to someone than you do for actually reporting it. Probably the same people.

Glass House — Tech fans in general were very disappointed when Reuben Houston was allowed back on the team (by a judge’s order) and even more disappointed at the message that Chan Gailey sent by allowing him to play. I hate when any student athlete at any school throws away a chance at an education by committing crimes (no matter how large or small). CMR has done the right thing by dismissing Lemon just as CPJ has done the right thing in dismissing Tarrant.

GM31 — your comment was tasteless and classless. People like you (and their comments) are the reason that so many other UGA fans undeservedly get such a bad rap. I hope it makes you feel better about the current situation to speak so crassly about a dead student athlete who will never get the chance to defend himself. I would venture to bet that you have shown more respect for the mascot that died that you have shown to this young man and his family. Shame on you…

Tech fans, we do not want to hear a peep out of you as long as you have an accused rapist still on your roster.

Richt kicked Lemon off the team for his behavior, your school continues to harbor an accused rapist so just give it a rest.

Its really funny and sad when Techsters come on UGA blogs and vents posing as disgruntled UGA fans and blast the school, the players, and or the coaches.

It is so transparent and so stupid.

No UGA fans want a UGA player to get into trouble but some do. Chip cites 7 arrests this off season.

Six were for misdemeanors, and many college students get cited for those due to a moment’s bad judgment.

Last year C King had just arrived on campus and was charged with a misdemeanor for riding a motorized bike (not a motorcycle) the wrong way on a one way street on campus, which has several internal one way streets.

When I was in school I did the same thing one day in a car, after a 2 way street had been changed to one way. The cop just corrected me and said pay attention to the signs (and no, I was not an athlete).

Six misdemeanors; how many convictions? Remember, this is America and you’re not guilty until deemed so in court of law, and not by a mob of Tech loser bloggers.

Now, one felony is one felony too many - if he is guilty. A court of law decides that, not an AJC columnist (right, Terrence?) and not a bunch of Tech losers.

So until Lemon is found guilty, let’s not crucify him in the AJC. I know the paper has an inflated sense of self importance, but the AJC is just a newspaper, not a court of law.

I seem to recall the AJC trying to crucify Richard Jewell in its stories in 1996. We all remember how that one turned out.

And as for Tech, when you get your drug trafficking, heroin usage, hit and runs, and rape issues under control, then you can criticize us.

Also quit supporting underage drinking by playing the Budweiser Beer theme during football games and change the lyrics to your fight song to drop references to “drinking your whiskey clear.” Under age drinking is a problem the Tech administration should take seriously.

Pitbull: Are you complaining about underage drinking at Tech? You sir, are an idiot. Indians don’t drink, especially not whiskey. But seriously, don’t be a little girl about a fight song reference. This is college football, people drink, especially down south (and ESPECIALLY in the SEC, which is why your whiny comment amazes me)

And yes, most of the UGAY arrests are for minor, “non”-issues. The AJC just doesn’t have anything to write, so they have one moron attack the players (T Moore) and then another moron try to make it all sound better (Towers). By the way, Tarrant has been suspended from the Jackets, pending further results. All you can do is try to teach them the correct path, and then throttle them when they choose to play thugs instead of college athletes.

The coach can do all he can to help and influence these players, but the players have a choice of right and wrong. These boys are given the chance to make good grades and play football and to become role models for their families, friends, and neighbors. I praise coach R. for trying to show these young men a better life by trusting and believeng in God. Way to go coach never compromise on your faith in God. We need more men like you at Ga.

Guess that arm doesn’t hurt too bad wde. Keep throwin ‘em.

Here’s some old readin fer ya:

One of Auburn university’s prominent football players was being honored as a scholar athlete for his work as a sociology major. Professor Gundlach, the director of the Auburn sociology department, had never had the player in class. He asked two other full-time sociology professors about the player, and they could not recall having taught him, either.

So Professor Gundlach looked at the player’s academic files, which led him to the discovery that many Auburn athletes were receiving high grades from the same professor for sociology and criminology courses that required no attendance and little work.

…The Auburn football team’s performance in the N.C.A.A.’s new rankings of student athletes’ academic progress surprised many educators on and off campus. The team had the highest ranking of any Division I-A public university among college football’s six major conferences. Over all among Division I-A football programs, Auburn trailed only Stanford, Navy and Boston College, and finished just ahead of Duke.

Among those caught off guard by Auburn’s performance was Gordon Gee, the chancellor of Vanderbilt, a fellow university in the Southeastern Conference and its only private institution. Vanderbilt had an 88 percent graduation rate in 2004, compared with Auburn’s 48 percent, yet finished well behind Auburn in the new N.C.A.A. rankings.

“It was a little surprising because our graduation rates are so much higher,” Mr. Gee said. “I’m not quite certain I understood that.”

I think we all know what he’s insinuating here.

And we wonder why Auburn players are so clean, looks like they keep it in the family down there on the plains. It’s just a matter of time before those stones start comin back at ya wde.

It is has been well known for many years that Auburn is not ranked as an academically competitive university for high school students in the process of selecting a college.

They do an outstanding job however of keeping all potential legal issues involving their football players under wraps.

An enterprising sports writer could make quite a name for himself if he were to do some digging and interviews.

That would of course eliminate any writers from the AJC. If its not on the blotter, they just go by the practice field for 30 minutes, file a story and go home.

Haha wow so a bunch of hearsay and I’m all the sudden convinced Auburn is a fraud of a school?

Maybe they will come back, and I will be disappointed if those things are true. But quite frankly UGA had about as embarassing a scholastic episode involving athletes as any that can be imagined a few years back and those were proven facts.

And guess what, you can’t cheat the police (even though as in the case of UGA, they will apologize for you). And Auburn is butt-wiped clean in the criminal department. The biggest bust we’ve had was Tray Blackmon a few years back for UNDERAGE DRINKING (which I think most of us will agree is not a big deal, just as some of your guys shouldn’t be held too hard for it). But the indisputable fact is that as far as discipline Auburn is far healthier than UGA, UF, or UA.

And funny how you UGA guys wipe your slate clean compared to GT’s rape charge. As awful as rape is, having one rape is not as bad a sign FOR THE PROGRAM as 7 arrests. Hell, that one player may be more f* up than any one of UGA’s, but for 7 different guys to get busted, that says more about UGA’s program than any one one charge against another school.

I’ll happily admit that the past two years weren’t as I would have hoped. But do you think I’m scared? You guys can keep awarding yourselves preseason national championships but you can bet that you WILL NOT be national champs at the end of the year. Keep in mind that the higher ranked you are, the better Auburn and CTT’s chances are of wooping your butt.

And, be honest, you UGA fans are just a little scared to visit the daily beat blogs. Never know when #8 will be coming.

And the only thing more embarassing than having 8% of your team arrested is having the cops come out and say your student body is much the same. hahaha

Auburn is a JOKE of the highest order.

Look you Auburn fans, Auburn is the most penalized football program in the history of NCAA Probations ever.

Auburn was blasted on the front page of the New York Times and carried nationally for your FOOTBALL PROGRAM allowing your players to take Academic Fraud classes online.

Your President of Auburn University and your Athletic Director were BOTH FIRED for flying to hire Bobby Petrino when they had not even told Tommy Tuberville that Tubs had been fired.

Academic Fraud put Auburn University on 1 Year Academic Probation as a college, the whole entire Auburn University.

7 NCAA Major Infractions Database Football Probations for Auburn University, and you come running in here telling UGA fans that our men’s basketball program had Academic Fraud. Get a life.

Directed Reading Sociology Courses for your Football Players, the lot of them. Ring a bell ?

Auburn football players with an average 2.14 GPA made 3.31 GPA in the directed reading Sociology classes they were funneled into by the Athletics Department for all these Auburn football players.

There are 52 former Georgia Bulldogs in the NFL today. Only 3 schools have more. Auburn is not 1 of them. The players in the NFL that Auburn does have come from the State of Georgia.

Auburn’s Strength of Schedule is always very easy for an SEC team. You elect to play ULM, S Mississippi, West Virginia, and Tennessee-Martin. That’s this year. All of your non-SEC games. That’s all of them. Last year it was cupcake Kansas State, USF (whom you made headlines nationwide for Losing to), New Mexico State, and Tennessee Tech. Your scheduling has been criticized every single year in football.

Coach Richt has a Winning Record against Tommy Tuberville and Auburn in the 7 seasons Coach Richt has out-recruited Auburn every single solitary year.

UGA has been ranked in the Final AP Poll every single solitary season for 11 Consecutive Years now. During this time, UGA has 107 Wins behind only 2 teams both of whom have 108 Wins.

Auburn is 16th with only 93 Wins. 14 Wins fewer for Auburn University than UGA, and this despite the Notorious Easy Out-of-Conference Schedules Auburn puts annually on your stinking schedules.

No other school in the history of the NCAA currently has been ranked 11 Consecutive Years in the Final AP Poll but UGA.

I think “wde” must still have the Nike cleat stuck up his butt from the past 2 years of defeat. By and large, Auburn fans are civil and certainly are loyal (unless your name is Tommy Tuberville, that is). Like him or not, Tubs is a good coach. It should be fairly obvious that Tubs has taken notes from the Donnan-era at UGA and has an excellent “relationship” with the local authorities in and around Auburn University. “wde”, please take your ignorant, giving Auburn fans a bad name opinion and go away. You have been flagged, now take the penalty and step it off (of this blog). It is amazing how insecure you UGA fans can be. I take a stab at you guys because you just can’t seem to stay out of jail and all the sudden you guys start bringing up academic allegations against Auburn, none of which have been proven and none of which (I’ll admit) I have any insight to at all. What am I supposed to say? Oh, ‘whatever’, you’re right. I’ll just roll over and die because you must be right. I wasn’t even talking about academics, someone else brought that up. I think avoiding the topic is to both of our mutual benefit because neither schools has a very squeaky clean record in that department.

Haha you bet I’m still ticked about the last two years. You think it was fun watching B. Cox throw 5 interceptions in 06, or watching Auburn (who had you VERRY scared for 2/3 of the game) run out of gas in the 4th quarter is fun? But at the same time I’m not scared to admit that I’m peaved and I think deep down you guys know it wasn’t as lopsided last year as the final score suggests. Remember Troy, that lowly non-BCS school that put up 34 points on you? Well we got that offense + better athletes coming at you, running 95+ plays a game, and you can bet we’ll have a top 10 defense. I don’t think you guys should be so cocky! And I think most of you (the smart ones) would agree.

The notion that Richt or any other coach can control a kid who, in too many cases, experienced 18 years of dysfunction before he arrived at the university is just plain silly. A lot of these players have no concept of normal.

Georgia suspends them, at least. Remember the Gator safety (Joiner I think) who stole a car off an impound lot and was arrested for a felony the week before the Cocktail Party? The owner - no doubt a UF booster - discovered that it was all a big misunderstanding, declined to press charges, and Joiner was back in the starting lineup within days. Thankfully, he spent most of the afternoon watching Georgia receivers streak into the end zone, which is some form of justice.

Does anyone think a Georgia player would have played in that game? No way, he would be in Lemon’s shoes right now.

Hey WDE,

Being gassed and not being able to “finish the drill” in the 4th quarter is what we like to refer to as conditioning and is an important part of the game.

And if you watch that entire game from last year, the score may have been close for 2/3rd’s of that game, but Auburn never really had us on the ropes ever. They were behind from the get go, and put together a pretty solid 3rd quarter. One good quarter’s play is not going to win you too many football games in the SEC.

We’ve all got players who get into trouble. I always laugh when I see a post from UGA fans calling Bama Tuscaloosa Correctional or something to that effect. And here they are with 7 players arrested just since January. But I shouldn’t pick on UGA. Its just a plain fact that every team in the SEC is going to have players getting into trouble because a lot of these kids come from tough backgrounds and a lot of them come from fatherless homes. So when anybody out there, whether they be Bama, UGA, Tenn, Auburn, Florida, or whoever starts talking trash about someone else’s players getting arrested you should just shut the hell up because unless you’re Vandy you’re probably living in a glass house when you throw those rocks.

A previous blogger mentioned WR Kris Durham as under used in 07. I guess I can agree with that, but his role will increase greatly in 2008. I know there are many talented WRs on the squad, but either A.J., or T.King, or possibly both will red-shirt (IMO). Okay, probably not both. Tavarres had the opportunity to enroll early, and gained some valuable practice time during the spring. I have no first hand knowledge of how talented A.J. Green is. But, it sounds like he’s ready to compete.

Back to Durham. He will be used as a “move the chains/possession wr” AND a big time threat inside the Red Zone, especially on the fade pattern. I expect him to become one of Matt Stafford’s favorite targets and continue to develop into a top notch WR. As many of you are aware, Durham showed significant improvement during bowl practice, and made some nice plays versus Hawaii.

I am curious to see if OC Mike Bobo will utilize more 3 and 4 WR sets next season. It’d be nice to spread the field and give Knowshon even more room to run. With FB Southerland on the shelf for the first 3-5 games, why not use some single back sets with 4 WRs on the field? Also, I expect to see a more patient Moreno in 2008. At times, he seemed to accelerate just before his OL could set up their blocks. The Dawgs have great successs with their run, play action pass attack, but maybe the offense will be tweaked just a bit.

With fleet footed QB Logan Gray on the roster, I still wonder if the coaches are considering using him as a “change of pace QB,” if the offense hiccups some, in big games. Of course, if your starting QB is as talented as Stafford, why even consider such an option? (sorry, pun intended).

That’s all I’ve got.

Go Dawgs!

Good point, shane #1. To be honest, I don’t know if he’ll get many starts, but I truly believe Durham will get plenty of PT and make the most of his opportunities. Look for him, every time the Dawgs line up in 3 or 4 WR sets, especially on 3rd and short to medium situations. He will excel at the slot position. Stafford will appreciate his effort and ability to make the tough catch in traffic. Kris has added more muscle, which should make it easier for him to get off the line and create space. In 08, Durham will be Stafford’s go to guy. That being said, Mo Mass will continue to make HUGE plays downfield.

Would you like to see the Dawgs spread the field more, or exclusively stick to the current offensive philosophy?

Your Academics at All Barn University sucks.

You Lost your accreditation for one year, and on the U.S. News and World Report Rankings ARE NOT EVEN LISTED while UGA is Number 59. In fact, every other SEC school is ranked ahead of All Barn University.

This is why you are Number 20 in the Directors’ Cup All-Sports Trophy and UGA Number 10.

This is why Tommy Tuberville cannot recruit like Coach Richt can. This is why we have 52 in the NFL and Auburn only 39. This is why we have larger attendance. This is why we have better enrollment. This is why we get more of the better football student-athletes (UGA far higher APR than All Barn) and why we get more of the better football players.

Future, Harris had a breakout spring practice and moved ahead of Durham, as I said, this depth chart will change in fall practice. Several times. I agree that We will see plenty of Durham in the fall, whether He is listed as starter or not. I think that Mo-mass will be the go to guy next year. His stats were pretty good for a second option last year. He is a senior, a four year starter, and has become a leader both on and off the field. Stafford is becoming the leader of the offense, as He should be, but I believe in senior leadership. Mo-Mass and Chandler need to really step it up. Chandler will be the only senior on the line of scrimage. I am not that enamored with the spread, I think that defenses are begining to figure it out. Stafford will take off when other teams leave the middle open, like He did in the Tech game last year, but, IMO, the reason defenses sometimes get careless is that Stafford is not exactly Mike Vick when it comes to running. I like Stafford in a more “conventional”, for lack of a better word, offense. Also, going to the spread would remove the FB and maybe the TE, two posistions of strength for UGA. Remember that Chapas gave Us some quality minutes last year. The spread with Logan at the helm is very intresting to Me, and I think We will see a lot of it in the future. Anyway, I am not worried about the skill posistions on offense, no senior O linemen DOES worry Me.

Shane #1, no senior O linemen this year is a very good thing. It only means that future teams will have those senior O linemen with quality depth provided by the underclassmen that UGA is recruiting on the O line. Remember, all of UGA’s O line has extensive playing time.

Ex, I didn’t state that clearly, actually We do have one senior, but He is a LS. No seniors is a mixed blessing. We have only one jr, so the O line should improve every year, in technique, size, and strength. However, I always thought it good to have a senior or two on the O line to settle the guys down when the going got tough. The log jam of freshmen and sophmores should allow UGA the luxury of red shirting the new guys over the next few years. IMO, a red shirt season helps O linemen more than any other posistion. The center slot bothers me, We have so little experence there.

It’s not trashing people who disagree with you who say :

(1) Coach Richt does NOT have a Winning Record over Tommy Tuberville.

(2) UGA is not doing well at being National Champion compared to the vols when UGA is Number 2 in the nation in the Final AP Poll and the vols for the 6th Consecutive Year finished in the Final AP Poll WORSE than UGA again.

(3) These are also not stats.

They are called FACTS.

Center is a critical position Shane#1. The lynchpin of the O line and UGA has typically had a leader in that position. Overall the line looks good. Coach will have the right guy there. If Vince Vance gets it together he can be a real stud. We know Sturdivant can be the best to ever play at UGA. I am fortunate to have a job that lets me attend many practices around the SEC and some of the ACC. UGA has across the board the best situation in the SEC East. Sorry UF fans but unless you find a secondary, you are looking at another year like the last. You need to shore up at LB as well. Auburn is going to be tough…physical in the west. If their new offense puts up the points, look out. LSU is very good again. UT has alot of compelling issues to address. Just my take.

Just to make sure you guys hate me enough…

You’re talking about Auburn’s academics doesn’t have any effect on me at all. The fact is that I don’t go to Auburn, haven’t gone to Auburn, and won’t be going to Auburn. Wanna know why?

I’m a ramblin’ wreck from Georgia Tech and a helluva lawyer!

Pour on the hate. Wanna talk academics?

Ex, so You get to go hang around practice fields huh? Man, great job! You aren’t one of Fulmer’s spies are You? I want Tony’s job. Go to Amelia Island and Destin for a few weeks and sip bloody marys by the pool and hang out with the poohbas of the ACC and SEC, then take a couple of months off. Rough life! Then in the busy season You go to ballgames, go to the Sugar Bowl then hang out in N.O. for a week for the BCSNCG, and all this on the AJC’s dime. You are right about the center, hardest job on the offense. He has to be smart, but aggressive, know how to read the D, and be a good leader for the O line. He has to be strong enough to take on a NT and quick enough to get out on a MLB. He also has to be the type person that can earn the respect and the trust of the QB and the other linemen. Crybabies and guys thst don’t want to work hard need not apply.

Let’s see what you have to say after some games are played. My friend Chip is a good reporter. He’s paid to cover the Dawgs. You Dawg fans, and that includes me, would rather a homer GA fan be blogging than an Oklahomer fan, which Carter was accused of a time or too. Get over it. whatever happens happens. Let’s enjoy the good times that are upon us. Might win the NC this year, might not. A lot of anticipation this year. It might sneak up on us when we least expect it. Like 1980. Either way, CMR has us in the conversation, which is where we’ll be as long as he’s around. Say your prayers for that and be thankful. What’s happened to FSU since CMR left?…………..
