UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Football season never ends for players

For us football season is three intense months in the fall followed by a brief bowl season. But for today’s football players it is truly a year-round endeavor.

I say this after spending yesterday afternoon over at the Georgia football complex. While it’s just the second week in July, these guys were going at it like it was the middle of September. Of course, there are no pads involved and no footballs either, for that matter. This time of year it is about pure conditioning.

On that note, I ran into quarterback Matthew Stafford and spoke with him very briefly. From my perspective, he appears to be in the best condition he’s been in since he’s been at Georgia. All I could go by was looks but there was virtually no sign of the pudginess that’s always been part of Matt’s physique. He actually looks taller.

Anyway, I interviewed Prince Miller and Chris Davis while I was over there for some things I’m working on and asked them about staying in Athens all summer and working out and running daily.

“Other than a full schedule of classes, it’s not too bad,” Miller said. “It’s the time when you really get to know your teammates and kind of build a bond with each other”

Davis said the summer is beneficial academically. “It’s a time to help your grades,” he said. “Classes aren’t as big and you can get a lot of help from professors one-on-one. I look at it as a GPA booster. In general, you can be looser and freer. It’s not as intense. I like the summer.”

I also got a chance to talk linebacker Marcus Washington for a few minutes. Marcus is recovering from shoulder surgery after injuring it again in spring practice. Originally he was expected to miss the whole season but he told me Tuesday he’ll be coming back in October. That’d be a bonus for the Dogs if he does.

That’s all for now. Like I said, we’ll start having some regular features on football a couple of times a week now. I’ll have a short Q&A with Prince Miller that should be up online later today and will run in tomorrow’s newspaper and I have something planned for Sunday’s paper as well. And, as always, we’ll be on top of news as it breaks.

Wonder if Matthew knows that people pay so much attention to his physique? Glad to hear he’s looking good though. We are expecting big things from him this year.

Maybe somebody could help??? I did not realize that conditioning for QB Matt was an issue. Had the coaches been concerned? He has played well, not always great, but still a fine QB. I know getting into shape is a plus but was it holding him back?

Chip, Thanks for the article today. I’m struggling to find something new to read everday. What was all the crazy rumor stuff about Knowshon and CMR? Also, I’ve asked a few times but still no answer, any chance that AJC.com is going to make the UGA page available via blackberry or their mobile site? All the other pages are accessible but not ours. Two more quick q’s, when is the first day of practice and when do you think UGA VII will be named? Thanks so much for the daily updates.

A full schedule of classes? More one on one time with the profs? What a bunch of classless thugs. Next thing you know they’ll be doing something wild and crazy like staying up all night studying for a test. Things are clearly out of control in Athens and Richt needs to get a handle on it.

GATOR CHOMP, you’re email is what makes Dwag fans hate Gators so much. Plus, it is about as intellient as my big toe! No way we blowout the Dawgs this year. It will be a knock out Dawg/Gator fight for sure, but the Dawgs this year are a legit top 3 team. Depending on our D, we will be a legit top 10 team. If the D is great, then we will be a legit top 3 like Georgia. Trying to keep it civil and intelligent. And I hope you Dawgs don’t mine me blogging here. I enjoy reading your comments about the Dawgs. And I hope the Dawgs are undefeated when the Gators meet you in Jax. How great would that be!!! Signing off, Tampa Gator.

Gator chomp,

Obviously we all know that you are on some illegal substance. Please tell me anyway how a team that went 0-4 against top 40 defenses last year and with a defense that was mediocre at best, will come out and just smoke our doors off? I believe you guys are as talented as anyone, but as you break in a new defensive coordinator and play a ton of freshman on the d-line, do you really think your defense is just going to manhandle us? I think it’s great that your so proud of your school and are passionate about your team, but spare us these retarded statements and just pray that Stafford doesn’t go ape** on your defense this year. Shouldn’t you go to the Wal-mart and pick up some new pairs of Jorts for the upcoming season?

Just when I start to think that all Gator fans are just like ‘gay-chomp’, somebody like TampaGator comes along, acts like an adult, and spoils it for me. You see I have long history of dealing with Gatorfans…back when Vince was regularly, and routinely, sending the lizards home with their tail between their legs - think about it - most of the gators I knew were pretty reasonable, they had learned not to expect too much and realized just how foolish they looked when they let their mouths get ahead of their accomplishments. Then Superior Happened…and the rest is history.

They have, as a rule, become the most arrogant, the most despised fans in the SEC - and probably the country. I’ll never forget listening into a pre-game(s), radio sports-talk show early in the season following the thrashing UF had taken at the hands of Nebraska the previous January. Florida was playing UT in Knoxville that day, a UF fan called in to the local Atlanta station on their way up for the game and proceeded to berate Tennessee fans as low-life, ridge-running, peckerwoods that just weren’t in the same class as the mighty Gators…pretty personal and way out-of-line. Soon-after a local called in to say that he had just recently moved to Atlanta, had no ties to the SEC but was a college football fan and had seen Florida take that thumping at the hands of Nebraska…an embarrassing beating that should, and would, have humbled any human with a conscience and the brains to know when to keep their mouths shut. But noooo….here’s a jerk claiming some sort of superiority on the basis of just being from UF…that attitude on the part of the UF fan had made it clear to the ‘objective’ observer that Florida and Florida’s fans were not worthy of support from anyone that cared about anyone but themselves. This pretty-much confirms what I’ve come to think about ‘em - then along comes Tampa and all my opinions are threatened…well maybe just till the season starts.

gamecockgary, you need to brush up on simple math. How will we score 10 points if we don’t get in the endzone? I guess we’ll just have to kick a field goal and get two safeties on you. That sounds REAL likely dumbass. Go to school. I will enjoy the beatdown of the cocks more than any other this year the way you idiots blog here. Hope you enjoyed it last year because, as history tells it, you won’t enjoy another one for a LONG time LOSERS!

Stafford has boatloads of talent & potential. I think he is understanding more regarding what’s at stake (for his & the Dawgs’ future). There’s millions of dollars in NFL contract, endorsements, etc. potentially awaiting him, so he ought to sell out 100% for keeping his academics solid & preparing for football year round. Offseason, he needs to work towards peak physical condition in preperation for the season. I’d like to see him holding 220-225 max at around 9-12% bf. As the season approaches, his training, diet and mental preperation should be flawless. Stafford has the world awaiting him! GO DAWGS!!!

I know Mark Richt, and the Univ. of Ga. are classy. How do they attract their absolutely vile fans. I have been going to football games for many decades, and Ga. fans have been vocal, but the current fans writing on every blog on the planet never have anything to say that has any value. This seems to have started with the advent of drugs. Maybe we need to start a drugged dogs anonymous organization. Is it beyond your scope of understanding that it is okay to act like a responsible adult between your villification of everything and anybody that doesn’t agree with you. There are many good and intelligent people that follow and support other schools. Georgia, will always get the top athletes in this area. and other people would be more inclinded to pull for them. Why the Atlanta papers allow this garbage only shows where their allegiance lies. If everyone who follows schools other than GA. would stop buying their rag sheet, and subscribe to papers who give everyone a fair shake, and edit these idiots who spout out venom everytime they get on the website. Thanks for listening.

Hey gamecockgary, win the SEC once, just ONCE, then you can get on a Dawg board and spout your nonsense.

Gamecocks: 0 SEC championships 0 National championships 0 BCS bowls 1 Ten win season in history 78,00 fans who think they are WAY better than history proves.

GatorChomp - you can’t stop Knowshon, therefore you can’t stop the Dawgs. And your boy Tebow will spend more time on his back this year that last.

Go Dawgs!

By My Take

July 9, 2008 1:52 PM | Link to this

I actually think Tennessee will once again pose a much bigger challenge for us this year than Florida. Florida is crazy overrated right now. Of the five top 25 teams on their schedule last year they lost to four of them. Tebow’s injury was no fluke. It will happen again if Florida cannot find a dependable running back. My eyes about popped out of my head when I saw the size of their spring game hero, Chris Rainey. 5 foot 9 and 156 lbs? This is Florid’s savior? The dude is going to get killed. There is no way anyone that size can carry the load over an entire SEC season. I don’t care how fast or talented he is. And yes, the defense will probably be better. But better for this squad probably means average because they were flat out awful at times last year. Watch the Georgia game if you don’t believe me. If I didn’t know any better I’d think the Florida secondary was trying to throw the game. It was THAT bad.

Now none of this is to say that Florida can’t be as good as everyone says they will be this year. They certainly have the talent. Meyer is a good coach. Tebow is the best in the business. But as of right now I just don’t see what everyone has to go on to justify calling this a top 5 or even top 10 team. It is absurd.

Gator Chomp, don’t get too ahead of yourself. To sell the Dawgs short this year is not very smart. They have a great team and we will be fortunate to beat them this year. It surely will not be a blowout, unless the same team that played in Knoxville last year shows up. That is not likely.

UGA/FLA will be a great game. A lot will depend on the outcome. Injuries, What’s in these guys heads at the time, luck and breaks. All the talk above is nonsense. We will see. both teams will be good this year and I doubt they will both be undefeated when they play. I do like our chances. The Dawgs defense will be very good and the offense could be special. As for GATOR CHOMP, the only lucky thing about last years’ game is that we didn’t hang 50 on you. Hopefully this years’ game will be a good one. No one fears the Gators, so you need to come back down to earth. Tennessee absolutely took us behind the shed last year and whipped our butts. This year should be different. It is the blinding, cocky ignorance of UF fans like GATOR CHOMP that give a lot of Gator fans a “bad name”, that’s for sure. Most of the true Gator fans I know are civil, at least. Should be an interesting year. If we could only get Terence Moore to move down to Gainesville so he can spoon with Meyer like he obviously wants to, it would be a great year!

Thanks Chip. I appreciate it. I have another stupid question if you get to it: When do the “Authentic” jerseys start selling? Last year the #7 jersey was the only authentic that I knew about and you can only get those in XXX fat boy size now. Do you know when they start releasing those? I’m guessing it will be #7 again along with #24. Thanks for the time and for answering all three of my other Q’s.

When they win the NC will they be regarded as the “best Team ever” based on their scheduled of all the teams that are “supposed” to be good right now during the offseason? Please let us know your opinion, tell us that the dogs are very good, talk dirty to us.

Why do so many UGA fans consider the “jean shorts” line so funny? Are you people from the cosmopolitan cities of Ellijay, Jasper, Carrolton, Douglasville, Dacula, Macon, Americus, Albany, Camilla, Vidalia, Waycross actually insinuating that Florida fans are more redneck than UGA fans. The Dawgs definitely have the talent & potential to run the table, but we’ll probably end up with 1 or (maybe) 2 losses (none of which will be to candy@$$ Flowerida or the Slurppier’s Lamecox). GATORZONE, not all UGA fans think the jean shorts analogy is that funny. I would like to think most UGA fans are decent and don’t spew some of the crap that gets posted on here, but you inquiring about where people are from in the state of Georgia only fuels those that are ready to pounce on an “enemy infiltrator”. Name a few “cosmopolitan” cities in Florida, if you will. A couple on your list from Georgia would certainly qualify as cosmopolitan if compared to the likes of Palatka, Welaka, Rideout or even Gainesville.

The Dawgs will own the SEC this year. Honestly, the only game I’m worried about on the schedule is at LSU, and UGa should beat them by 17 due to talent differential alone. UGA should match up well with either Ohio State or USC in the title game in Miami, but the dawgs have so much talent on offense and defense, I don’t see any team being able to stay on the field with UGA this year for very long. Florida? Don’t make me laugh—they are a 1 man team, and their defense will be terrible again. The dawgs should put up 40-50 on uf this year in an easy blowout.

Gamecock Gary always makes me laugh. He’s funnier than Richard Pryor was in his heyday.

(He’s on drugs like Pryor, too…)

I doubt that South Carolina will even win more than six games with that overrated defense (gotta defend the run to challenge in the SEC!) and that nonexistent offense. But the chickens will dream on, as usual, even as Spurrier’s SEC win percentage heads south and Richt’s heads north.

Next, after Spurrier finally gives up, the ‘Cocks will stop getting half-dead coaches to sully their reputations in their twilight years by losing in Columbia and will instead try to re-animate the corpses of fully-dead coaching legends. Watch out, Bear Bryant—the Gamecocks may be digging you up next year!

Gatorchump & Gatorzone are two mudders of a kind - living in a dream world. We really cleaned their clocks.

If the same offense that allowed more sacks on Tebow during our game than the total sacks of all prior games and their tough defense that gave up 42 points is returning, then we’ve got their number again this year. I called it last year and Atlanta Gator didn’t believe me. Now I’ll call it again - the gators are not looking forward to playing The Dawgs. Their afraid of losing AGAIN! Their fears are well founded. The Dawgs will stick it to them again.

heeldawg, I think when SC finally stops trying to hire the next big name, hoping to bring instant credibility to the program, they will start to be dangerous. AltamahaDawg, I always thought that SC has underachieved, even when the coach wasn’t the supposed Second Coming. They certainly have played UGA tough for the past 3 decades. They’ve never really lacked talent; I just don’t think they’ve ever learned to win. I thought (feared) that Spurrier was going to do that for them, but it must be so deeply ingrained that he can’t turn the corner with them, either. That’s to the Dawgs’ benefit; the longer they stay blissfully unaware of how to win consistently, the better off UGA will be.

Alt, as usual I agree. No one could be that arrogantly antagonistic and mention their children in the same blog response. I think Gatorchomp has to be a creation of someone who just wants to stir the pudding. Atlanta Gator and our old pal Gator the Dog Catcher put class back in the old SEC warfare.

Enemy bloggers are always welcome as far as I am concerned if you can state a case as to why your team will win and ours will lose, have at it. Smack talk is fun but should probably be saved until all our teams play a game or two. I aint talking smack until I see us on the field in 2008, except for the occasional fire back at the delusional yardbirds.

And according to the terms of the JAX convention signed in 2006 by Gator the Dog Catcher for Florida and me for Georgia. “”Smack talk by the losing team is prohibited until three weeks before the following years game.” I lived with it, he has lived with it. The loser pays, Gators you lost, you reap the whirlwind.

USC east has some big shoes to fill on defense. Only one of the fabulous Brinkley boys came back for his senior season. Their Dad works with me, he is not anticipating the breakthrough season that Lamecock Larry is expecting. But, I suspect that as usual, USC will play us tuff, I just think we win probably 24-17. One touchdown at least, possibly another one.

One day USC will find a young coordinator on the bubble, grab him, make him head coach and then they will move in a few years into the ranks of the top teams in the SEC east. The death of Joe Morrison put the breaks on a program that was on the move and they have never recovered. Fans still in the stands though, and I respect that.

UGA has not won a title since 1980, and all the excitement surrounding the 2008 season is nothing more than hype.

Dogs will be lucky to go 8-4 in 2008, with losses to UT, AU, LSU and USC, of which most are road games.

It is just sickening to hear all the noise around Athens right now, but when it is all said and done in Nov-2008, the Dogs will be out of the national title hunt again.

My recommendation is for the AJC to drop these blogs, strap it on, suit up and get it on, and watch Southern Cal win another National Title

By the way, if you think CMR can outcoach Tubberville, Fulmer, Spurrier, Miles or Meyer (with 4 having national titles) you have another thing coming. Quite frankly if CMR were to leave the UGA program, he would have a hard time landing another D-1 job.

Omaha Update

Odd how we hear no comments from Chip or anyone else in Bulldog Nation of how Fresno State put a beatdown on the Dogs in Omaha. The almighty SEC fell to the WEAK WAC.

Talk about a beatdown!! I think Athens is planning to rename Foley field to Choker’s Field.

See you in the fall….and remember…8-4 at best!!

Go ahead, let the red comments fly….

I know we are supposed to ignore the morons like mike bobo 17 int but i can’t stand him making these moronic posts with no basis. So tebow owns the dawgs? 0-1 as a starter classifies as owning them? And you say that all of the preseason hype never amounts to anything and we are out of the mnc hunt by november. 2007 11-2 AP #2 in AP and Sugar bowl champs, 2005 10-3 AP #10, 2004 10-2 AP #7, 2003 11-3 sec east champs AP #7, 2002 13-1 sec champs AP #3. The 2002 season could have very easily been a NC season but the chips didn’t fall our way the way they did for florida and lsu the last two years. So when you say UGA never lives up to the hype you should do a little research. There are very few teams in the country with a resume that can even come close to UGA under Mark Richt

By GATORZONE

July 10, 2008 10:02 AM | Link to this

Murdock, agreed. Richt is a good coach. Stafford is a good quarterback. Moreno is a great runningback and your defense is phenomenal. Anyone who does not give them respect is an idiot. By the same token Tebow is a great QB, Harvin and the rest of the offense is good. Defense will be much improved, but it would be impossible to be worse.

I look forward to a great season for the SEC in general. There are some great teams this year. And, any true fan gets nervous on any of the major matchups. Any game with LSU, UGA, Auburn, UF, UT, and even Alabama are going to be difficult.

Let’s get the season started already!!!!

Top 5 offensive plays that will break the backs of opposing defenses in 08:

5 One on one fly route to newcomers TKing or AGreen (in place of MH from last year) 4 Direct snap to KM 3 Fake give to KM or CK then QB keeper up the gut (I don’t know the exact name its what MS did to UK & GT last year) 2 Screen pass to KM or CK 1…. Toss sweep to KM

Just barely missing the cut: - 4th and short or goal line to BS to finish them off.

What do you guys think? Did I miss any good ones?

Gatorzone, I agree with you as well. I in no way see a blowout either way coming this year and no matter what either teams record is coming into the game, either team could win. But based on last years performance by each team and what each team is bringing back from last year, I like Georgia’s chances better than i have in a long time. The thing that bothers me is when idiots like gator chomp and bobo 17 int come on here and make childish statements and obviously have no football knowledge and ruin an otherwise good blog topic. I have noticed that many of the bloggers that used to frequent this site don’t even show up anymore and i can’t blame them. They used to provide more humor and insight than you could get from any other source but the blogs have gotten so out of control that they are now nowhere to be found. I look forward to reading knowledgeable posts from other college football fans such as yourself no matter what team they pull for but people like gator chomp make it hard to even enjoy what once was a great thing

GATOR CHOMP, post as often as you like. Your ignorant rants speak for themselves. The David Pollack “poser” is a sad, sad person. Truly a classless post, but I’m guessing it was a Tech fan in “disguise”, so it doesn’t surprise me. The post that Mark Richt couldn’t get another D-1 job if he ever left UGA made me laugh out loud. Very few coaches have EVER had the success he has had, in any capacity (Head Coach at UGA or Coordinator at FSU). That was just a dumb comment. Consider the source, I guess. The “Tebow owns UGA” comment made me laugh, as well. He’s a good “kid”, and one heck of a player/athlete, but to say he “owns” UGA is pretty funny. I do wish him well, though because he’s a class act, as far as I can tell.

What Gator chomp, and all of the rest of the UF faithful, always fail to acknowledge is the fact that even though they have had the upper hand in the series for the last few years, UGA still owns a commanding lead in the overall series. Yes, it is past history, but history is what makes up a rivalry. I can remember when playing UF was just like playing KY or Vandy. It goes in cycles and hopefully the cycle is turning again and we will once again have the upper hand.

MoDawg, I don’t understand why you automatically assume that the idiotic statement about David was from a Tech fan. No true football fan ever wants a player seriously injured, regardless of what team he plays for. Some jerks got a laugh out of the Tech baseball player who died. I surely don’t necessarily think that these were UGA fans. They are just aholes, period. My best wishes and prayers for David.

acually over the last few years(4) the series is tied 2-2. So by the gators bringing up their little run from the 90’s they are still living in the past and refuse to accept the reality of the situation. The fact that if UGA beats them this year then the dawgs will have taken the last 3 out of 5 from them and Tebow still will not have beaten the Dawgs as a starter. Bottom Line…they fear the Dawgs.

Big expectations for Dawg fans this year….looking forward to visiting Athens this fall - a great college town.

Since 1988 - the start up year of division play - TN has won 13 out of 19 games and 3 of the last 4. LOVE BEATING THOSE DAWGS!!!!

UGA program has improved since Goff/Donnan - but I still like the fact that we are dominating the PUPS!

CAUTION: Dawg Fans - I see a similar expectation level for you guys this year and Peytons last year with the VOLS. Go into the season optimistic - but if you go into this season arrogant (like I am sensing from some of you Dawg fans - and similar to what we did that year) you will be disappointed.

UGA has a tough schedule - and could potentially lose two or even three against the following: So. Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Florida, Auburn.

My opinion is there is not much that seperates UGA, AUB, FL, LSU and TN - Bama is knocking on the door as well. SC is capable of pulling the upset. One stupid turnover or if you just have a bad day (like UGA did in Knoxville last year) you are toast.

My unbiased prediction is that Gators (I hate to say) should be favored to win the EAST….as long as Tebow stays healthy and the Gator defensive secondary shows improvement from last year - which I am convinced will be the case. TN and UGA is a toss up for second…….but do not be surprised if either the Vols or UGA wins the East.

I will be rooting for UGA to beat AZ State - hope you guys root for the VOLS to beat UCLA.

GO VOLS!!

It’s funny how these blogs bring out the worst within us. The comment about no. Fl is true. I live here and am astounded when some liquored-up redneck here looks at my hat and asks,”Does that ‘G’ stand for ‘gator’”?. Laughter keeps me from telling him what the “F” on his head looks like. These people never saw high school much less went to that University whose hat he is wearing. Why don’t you gator fans get a bunch of new Stanford hats and swap them out. Tell’em that the “S” stands for Seminoles. I know it is embarrassing for grads to wear their “F” head hats around these jerks because all SEC fans would make the same association. They may also think they are rednecks to boot!

Update from Butts-Mehre:

Tavarres King was just up here to be interviewed by Anthony Dasher of uga.rivals.com. Said he is up to 182 pounds and that A.J. Green is everything he’s been hyped up to be… .

A qualifier on Marcus Washington. According to Claude Felton, who spoke to the training staff, Washington is definitely not going to play this season. Going to redshirt. I asked Washington on Tuesday in a passing conversation when he was going to come back and he clearly said “October” but he probably meant that’s when he’s going to return to the practice field. Sorry for any confusion.

If so, how prominant of a role could they play in the UGA offense?

Any mention of either of them or RB Carlton Thomas being used in the return game? (AA is excellent, but does CMR want to risk his best CB getting smashed on a return?)

Best wishes to Marcus Washington. Hope his recovery goes well, and he is ready for 2009.

Hello Cuz, Alt, Gen, Zeb, AtlantaGator, and all My web friends. GatorChomp is obviously a kid that loves to text, hence 2 for to, u for you and etc. Just be glad He doesn’t have Your cell #’s. I was hoping to see Washington back, but Curren and Gamble have been playing well and so many teams use the spread nowadays that We will be in two LB sets a lot anyway. I am looking forward to seeing King play after all the spring practice reports and Green sounds like the real deal, We’ll see when He puts the pads on. WR seems to be crowded. It is obvious that UGA wants Logan on the field, I would not be supirised to see Him on the field late in games running some kind of WVa spread with Thomas in the backfield, if We have some linementhat can be taught the blocking schemes. Oh well, I hope you guys enjoyed Your Fourth.
