UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Football season just around the corner

Well, it’s about two months until Georgia’s football season starts. To many of you that may seem like forever before it gets here. For me it’s like it’s just around the corner and there is a ton of work to be done between now and then.

Later this month the “preseason” officially gets started as I will be off to Birmingham, Ala., for SEC Football Media Days. That will be shortly followed by freshmen reporting, then the entire team, then daily practice.

I know there’s some whining for a little more daily football information here on the blog and from here forward I’ll be trying to drum up some for you. But, just so you know, we’re already well at work on football. Right now is the time of year that we’re gathering information and doing interviews, etc., for our preseason football special section and also planning out a lot of our preseason coverage.

Meanwhile, most of the Georgia football players are in Athens and in school and working out. There’s not a ton to report on that but I’ll be getting by there regularly to check in with players and coaches and see what’s going on.

On that note I ran into fullback Brannan Southerland late last week as he left the Butts-Mehre Building. He was still on crutches and sporting a patriotic red, white and blue cast on his surgically repaired left foot and leg. Southerland was actually coming from a rehab workout. Southerland’s recovery period at first was expected to last at least five games into the season but he told me he’d be surprised if it went as long as three games. He even said he’s shooting for the first game but it’s been my experience all athletes are optimistic that way and I’m sure the training staff will be very careful with Southerland, who already has created a lot of NFL draft buzz.

So there you go. There’s a little football fix to get you through your Monday. Like I said, I’ll be monitoring the team much more closely from here on. C-ya!

Great news on Southerland. It would certainly be a boon to get him back for the meat of the schedule.

Chip is right. This lull after spring practice till the season actually starts is when football fever gets BAD! I’m so ready for Football season that I’m actually getting geaked up for the GA Force playoff game tonight! Chip, any word or clue yet how recent the offseason incidents will affect the team?

Good news on Southerland. It’d be great to have him back for the big trip out West, though I think we’ll be all right at FB even if he’s a little too optimistic.

I can’t really wait for two more months….

Thanks for some good news!! It’s nice to hear something positive, and not the usual “player getting arrested” news. Keep bringing us good news! Tell the rest of the staff at AJC that if another player gets arrested, just don’t report it because we would rather not know.

Thanks for the good news on Southerland.. Hope he’s ready by SC.. We need him at full strength during the meat of the sked.. He’s as important to the running game as any lineman.. He destroys the DE’s & OLB’s with that devestating kick out block… Knowshon & Caleb (& the Dawgs O) NEED him!!!

Look forward to any other newz from the Classic City!!

Did anyone see the NFL networks Top 10 show on all-time NFL programs that develop NFL talent? Only 2 SEC schools made the list Tenn. and ‘Bama. I hate to ruin it for everyone, but I was so upset by the top 3. Notre Dame, Miami and USC. I understand USC (who will lose to us this year in the NC title game). I even understand Notre Dame (all the national titles and tradition). But how did Miami end up #2. What have they done!! They went 5-7 last year. When is the last time they were relevent?? How did they make the list at #2 and UGA not make it at all. Are these people at NFL network smoking something?

Georgia will be 8-4 this season, 9-3 at best. I like the Bulldogs, but we’re caught up in the emotions of the last few games last year. This is the still the same group who was smashed by Tenn, lucky to beat Bama in overtime, and barely got by Vandy. With their tough schedule, I think it’s going to be worse than people expect.

Not to diminish Southerland ( he is probably the best FB to play for UGA) but I think we will be okay with Chapas. I don’t know how long Munznamaier will be suspended; 1 game or 2.I am paticularly interested in the defense. We have expierenced secondary, but I know they can and will play even better. Does anyone else agree that we basicly play defense with roughly 4 safties on the field with our speed at LB. I look for Elerbe, and Owens to really break out this year. I know 33 was really good last, but this year even better. I also look for Reshad Jones to really come on also. Maybe the best DB by the end of the year. Damn, I am getting the shakes waiting for the season to begin. Go DAWGS #1.

Chesterdawg, you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Every year UM has at least 1 player drafted in the first round, and usually more players drafted than 90% of the schools in D1.

Good news about Southerland Chip - though not unexpected. Without him Moreno and King won’t break into open field running as much. Southerland will be highly recruited if he comes back and plays healthy this season. He may be the best blocking back in the country.

Chip, ChiefNotahoma (above) blogs a point that I have mulled over for sometime now. We lost a squeeker to SC, then got pounded by UT, escaped Bama - close, but a legit win, Vandy - same, we pounded UF but they turned out to be an end of the season loser team and I still think they will be unimpressive this year, pound an average Auburn team, KY - same, GT - same and destroy an average Hawaii High School team. We are talented and deep and have lots of confidence. Granted our schedule is one of the toughest in the country but outside of that, are we REALLY poised to make a legitimate run at one or more titles? Are we that good? Please don’t say, “Well, we’ll find out!”

Chip, keep on reporting the news, good and bad. I don’t know why some people only want to see good news. That makes you delusional. The arrests are bad, but we need to know about them.

ChesterDawg, take a look back at Miami’s success over the past 20+ years and you will understand why they sent so many players to the NFL. This year was the first in many, many years that they didn’t have a 1st round pick. You can’t base all-time records on the past few years.

FLA DAWG - I hear you. I keep thinking the same thing. I can remember lamenting a seemingly lost game at Vanderbilt that would have put us in the cellar of the SEC East at that time. A “timely” Vandy fumble at the UGA 8 followed by a nice drive and we are saved. Are we really as good as we think? I believe we are very good, but so do a dozen other teams, plus a couple of dark horses we are not even considering. We are going to have be extremely good and extremely lucky this year if we are going to come close to reaching the expectations we have set.

Last year was the tale of two season. I don’t think anybody has any delusions that Georgia was a great team the first half of last season. We were not. But we were a great team the second half and it showed in the final scores. Average opponents or not (and I think its a big stretch to call Florida, Auburn, and Hawaii average), we did what great teams do to average teams and blew them out of the stadium. 6 double digit wins in a row. That’s all you can ask for. What I found most encouraging was that even when we weren’t playing our best we still won convincingly. See the Kentucky and Georgia Tech games. Kentucky was a good team. Ask LSU.

Yes, that was last year and this is this year. But last year is all we have to go on at this point. If we play like we did the second half of the season we are every bit as good as everyone thinks we are. If we play like we did the first half of the season all of these 8-4 and 9-3 predictions won’t be far off the mark. We’ll see.

No, we’re not going to blow everybody out this year. There are going to be some tough games. It is going to take some luck. It always does. It took luck to go 11-2 last year. It takes luck to go 9-4. We may even have some close games against Vandy or Kentucky again. But in the current state of the SEC a win is a win. People need to get over this idea that the middle and bottom of the SEC are just going to roll over for the big boys. Those days are long gone.

By the way, I think we pound Arizona State into the turf. 55 sacks? Good grief.

LOL Milton Jeff. That’s hilarious - here’s an excerpt:

“I guess I’ve been on the computer too much playing video games and not going out and meeting people as much as I’d like to.”

At least have the self-respect to not nationally broadcast these failings. This doesn’t do anything to disprove tech’s stereotype.

Thanks for the Southerland update - could be very important to have him down the stretch. Also, please please report when kids are cleared of accused wrongdoing. I think that it is so ridiculous that the last thing most people read about Jeremy Lomax was the headline that he was arrested on weapons charges. Reading on we found out how truly unserious the charges were, but there was not even a mention of the fact that the charges were dropped. How would the reporters at the AJC like it if anytime possible, negative headlines were posted about them, and then when it turns out to be nothing, no one bothers to correct them.

Lets not forget CMR words of last year. He knew from the start that the team would not be very good, but thought as the year went on and they jelled they could be a very explosive team. They did just that. I know our schedule is tough. We might very well lose 2 to 3 games, but a 10-2 year with this schedule is great. No one likes defeat, but it happens. We will definatly have the talent, the questions is going to be is do we catch those 2 or 3 breaks that always define the NC season.

Defensively Georgia was average in 2005, and below average in 2006 and half of 2007. this was due to the over commitment of martinez to pass coverage and the opponent QBs were having fun, no hit, no sack and life is good. but after Vandy game Georgia’s defense was totally changed, like possessed or mutated. different blitzing schemes and pass coverage schemes. actually Georgia started to blitz and get to the QB. and that was one of the difference maker for the season. Georgia’s defense became unpredictable. However I want to point out that Georgia’s defense did not play Tennessee good. the defensive schemes were horrible and very predictable. Tennessee strength is in their offensive line, they have good offensive line. Georgia must play Tennesseee tough and design blitzing and passing shemes to overcome the strength of their line.and the key is let Crompton beat us if he can but not Foster!! Anyway I hope our defense will keep doing what he was doing after vandy game. Our offense should be spectacular, unstoppable. people outside georgia dont exactly know how talented our offense is! I predict Georgia will average 45 points considering the tough schedule. go dawgs

Great news for our star FB. With an relatively young, relatively inexperiences O-line….having that guy makes me feel a LOT better, not only about our run game but also in pass protection! That being said, maybe the abscence of a great blocker and great leader will generate some extra motivation for the o-line to really step up. Because, if they miss their block now, maybe Stafford gets hurt because Southerland isn’t there to clean up their mess? I think that sounds like motivation to me! Go Dawgs! Please be the team from the 2nd half of last season!

One last thought. Does CMR have problems with off-season motivation? It seems like we always start our seasons fairly flat…see the SC game every year. It seems as if we always hit our “stride” around the 5th game of the season. Anyone have a comment on this?

The national title talk really bothers me, mostly because it’s not a real title, and it’s largely out of a team’s hands (see 2004 Auburn, 2006 Boise State, and about four undefeated Penn State teams through the years). If Georgia loses just once - a virtually certainly with that schedule - then two undefeated BCS schools like Oklahoma and USC can lock us out of the BCS title game. Or we can lose the popularity votes to another 1-loss team.

I know that Florida’s two recent NCs and LSUs two recent NCs (including that two-loss wonder from last year) have a lot of our fans hungry, but it took improbable fluke losses for those teams to back into the title games. You can’t count on that. Just take care of business in the SEC and I’ll be happy. If someone wants to vote us NC at the end, that’s icing on the cake. The SEC is so tough and prestigious that a conf. championship might as well be a national title, anyway.

I saw the Vandy game on replay the other day what I didn’t remember at the time is that we held them scoreless the second half after giving up the lead shortly before the break. It was never a matter of them moving at will on us, just a handfull of busted coverages and a couple of big/trick plays that went their way. Even had thay scored in the end, (and that was a strip, not a lucky fumble) there still was sufficient time to score and we had moved the ball all over the field that second half.

Its called winning, not almost losing.

NC Dawg - history shows that long before CMR came to Georgia, the Dawgs always played it close with SC despite their obviously inferior talent. I just take it that c** fans have delusions of grandeur every year and play over their head for awhile before inevitably falling back to Earth. It would be nice to go out and lay 50 on them each time but with so many games throughout the season to get “up” for, it may be necessary to just settle for consistently beating, if not dominating the chickens. We can’t overspend our adrenalin and have nothing left in the tank for Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, etc…

I couldn’t agree more. Willie Martinez( and Mike Bobo for that matter) has an unnerving tendency to get conservative at the wrong times. His defensives have looked awful against UT the last 2 seasons. With that being said, I think we will beat the Vols this year 1. B/c we will have a bye week before that game, and 2.) because Crompton is like their Joe Tereshinski, good player but doesn’t have to arm to strech the field.

To Ed

Again I couldn’t agree more. The Dawgs ( and more importantly Dawg fans)need to focus on playing physical dominant football instead of recruiting classes and preseason rankings. They busted their butts down the stretch last season and put themselves in position for a NC b/c of their play not their hype. The BCS is a joke anyway. OSU in the National title game the last two years? Give a break. Focus on what you can control and everything else will fall into place.

NC Dawg - IMO it’s more of a team gel factor than coaches motivation as far as hitting a groove. Last year was a little different and I do think the motivation got better after the low point at UT. But in general, we have been playing so many young guys that I think it takes a few games for everything to really click. With more leadership from upperclassmen this year, I hope to see a quicker start.

BuzzyB:

Are you a Tech fan or a USF fan? USF needs to put together a good couple years. Great QB, but I know severalUSF grads that are scared of the O-Line. Man, if your a Tech fan you have just summed it up for all Tech people.”If we can’t beat them, then let’s find someone who can.”

If I were you. I would worry about your own team and go to your own blog. Of course it is nice to be on a blog that talks about a team that is always in the running for wining their conference and a shot at the NC. Tech? See ya at the Toilet Bowl again this year.

P.S. Hawaii would have kicked your teams tail last year.

WDE,

It ain’t bragging. It’s about beating who you play which Auburn has failed to do the last 2 times against UGA.

UGABLWS,

Key factor for UT in 2008. No David Cutcliffe. Check out UGA/UT during DC’s time at Ole Miss. Fulmer is out of excuses now. Sanders turned Woodson into an NFL draft pick yet couldn’t coach for Phat Phil? Cutcliffe is not there anymore to hide Phat Phil’s inadequacies.

Who will be the next scapegoat? Phil better look in the mirror.

Dan,

UT may actually have an upgrade at QB this year as Crompton has the ability to stretch the field with his arm…something Ainge could not do last year mainly because of injuries (Ainge did it fine as a freshman and pretty good as a junior, but he’s history to the SEC now.) When Crompton started against LSU in 2006, his bombs were impressive and had many UT and LSU fans complimenting him as the next star QB at UT. Whether or not that is the case will be settled on Sept 20. UGA will have a great team in 08 as will FL, but it will come down to head to head to head play between UGA/UT/UF and then who gets the breaks during the entire year…whoever fares the best on those 2 categories will represent the EAST in Atlanta.

Paddy and BuzzyB, I live in FL, too, and none of these FL schools have me really worked up and/or worried. All have major question marks- UF’s defense, FSU’s offense, Miami overall, USF’s depth, UCF’s talent level, etc. I mean, what good is returning 7 starters from a defense that sucked (UF)? Ditto for FSU and their offense. I like Randy Shannon as a person, but I’m not sure he’s the guy for UM as HC. USF pulled a couple of stunners last year, but could easily have the shoe on the other foot this year. UCF-what can I say? They couldn’t beat the 9th best team in the SEC last year with one of the best teams in their history. I think that speaks for itself. None of these five will win 10 games this year. Mark my words.

Let me guess, when you were growing up you never got into any trouble, no one ever gave you second chances, right? Things happen, people get second chances everyday(not just GA football players). I’m sure Joe Hamilton will be welcome at Tech any day he wishes to come on the field. He had second chances in life. Got one while at Macedonia H.S. in SC. OK guys, I actually responded to some of your queries earlier today but it apparently didn’t post. Been chasing down the basketball transfer this afternoon and an updated story should be up soon… .

To Chief Notahoma (great handle) and FLA DAWG: I think 8-4 or 9-3 is absolutely possible for Georgia this season. The Dogs very easily could have finished last season with such a record. There is such a fine line between that and undefeated and/or championship contender that is dependent upon lucky breaks and good fortune with injuries and discipline, etc. Georgia hasn’t done so well in that department so far this year… .

DOUBLE G DAWG: I have no idea. They’re not telling me anything. I may be going it alone. We’ll see… .

Was over at Butts-Mehre Building today and Dogs were getting after it pretty good in the weightroom and running out on the fields in the afternoon heat. Will be getting some interviews and report back to you this week.

I really hate to see that report out of Athens on Jacobs transfering. Really thought he was going to be a good player here. The only good thing about it is, usually when a guy leaves to “have a bigger role someplace else” they obviously didnt feel they were were the leading candidate. Can we assume Woodbury and Price have that locked down? With Thomkins on the way. Did that put Jacobs competing with Barnes with and maybe even Zlovaric for backup time. I’m sure he will have more of a role somewhere else, I just hate it because you always need to be as deep as possible for practises.

Chip I have been doing some research on UGA football, and came across something referred to as “The Hog Incident of 1980.” What transpired, and what role did DC Erk Russell have in mentoring the team and using this opportunity to “bring them together?”

To Gen Neyland From what I’ve read, new OC Dave Clawson, will have his “similar to west coast” offense ready to put up some big numbers. He has stated that he loves this scheme, because it gives UT the flexibility to build/adapt their offense around the talent on the roster. BUT…

I believe the week off, prior to hosting UT, will give DCWM plenty of time to scheme up some nasty blitz packages. Barring any more off field drama, the Dawgs should be near 100% and ready to knock the Vols all the way back to Rocky top…with a LOSS in their Davey Crockett caps.

AltamahaDawg: I agree. I think Jacob leaving is a bad blow. I also think Jacob was not smart to follow the advice of his AAU coach, Titus Randle of the Louisiana Future. Kids run away from competition nowadays. The source of Jacob’s fright was Trey Thompkins. He’s a beast and him and Price and Barnes all play the 4. But Dogs are going to be much more a two-post team and were cross-training Jacob at the 3. Just a dumb move.

Future Beat Writer/Columnist: That hog story has grown in legend and status over the years. The truth is it was just a bunch of crazy young dudes acting up late at night, much to one unfortunate pig’s chagrin. How they dealt with the consequences, however, is what some of them say galvanized and unified that team. Getting #34 signed helped, too.

It’s not UF we gotta worry over. They won’t win the East. It’s either UGA or UT. Mark it…Alas, I’ve been wrong before, BUT…FBW/C The off week is UGA’s plus hosting UT. No doubt. We have some Son’s of Your Mama’s Biscuit Rollers the week afore so it’s almost a wash going in. We gotta suit up and run the drill prior too, though. I shouldn’t have to point it out but UT holds the key in the East. If we bow out to UF and UGA, then it may all come down to JAX and I’ll put my dime on UGA…It’s all about the battles, not the war crowning he East Champ (Remember 2007). Thanks Chip. Got any good stories behind some of the UGA traditions?

I was reading an article on the Junkyard Dogs, (that’s where I saw a reference to the “Hog Incident”) and learned an interesting fact. Around 1974, Erk Russell asked the band director to play, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” when the defense made a good play. He was trying to find ways to galvanize his “Junkyard Dog” Defense. A unit he descibed with these words:

“By our own definition, a Junkyard Dog is a dog completely dedicated to his task, that of defending his goal line….In short, a Junkyard Dog is one who must stretch and strain all of his potential just to survive. Then he can think about being good.”

The Redcoats continue to carry on this tradition. Until now, I didn’t understand the significance of that song. I often thought, “Why do they always play that old stuff?” Now, I get it.

Gen”tleman” Neyland you always bring a strong argument. I respect that. As a fan, I always look forward to UGA vs UT. Seems like just yesterday, when David Greene and Verron Haynes broke the streak. Your Vols had won 9 in a row against the fellas from UGA. From the hob nailed boot incident on, this series has returned to being a rivalry.

I hope that last year’s victory over UF can also be a breakthrough performance for the Dawgs in that series.

The last 2 years vs UT have not been pretty for this UGA fan (or the team). If the Dawgs are to live up to expectations, CMR’s squad better find a way to beat BOTH UT and UF…in the same season. Of course, that might not be enough, given that MONSTER of a schedule.

The defensive schemes didn’t change, it was the personnel that changed. As important as Knowshon’s coming out was to the offense, the emergence of Rennie Curran was a HUGE lift to the defense. With his speed and ability, having him on the field transformed the entire defense. Without Curran on the field, CWM wasn’t able to blitz as much and had to rely primarily on pressure from the front 4.

Can’t wait for the season.

The national news outlets have done more stories on UGA football than the freakin’ Atlanta paper. What kind of sense does that make? How are the voluntary summer workouts going? How will the loss of Southerland affect the team the first half of the season? What are the questions that need to be answered going in to summer practice? There’s 3 topics for you right there Chip and it took me all of 5 seconds to come up with them. Good grief.
