News doesn’t stop for vacation
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Howdy folks. I’m back. Vacationed on the Gulf Coast last week and really enjoyed it. Hope y’all had an enjoyable week as well.
Of course, as usually is the case whenever I take some time off, all kinds of news breaks. Where I stayed in Florida, there was no cell service and no wireless access. So I didn’t find out until late Wednesday evening that Georgia basketball player Billy Humphrey was arrested for DUI and subsequently dismissed from the team. Thanks, by the way, to Chris Vivlamore, one of our editors, for handling the news.
Such a shame, but coach Dennis Felton was left with no options after Humphrey’s third arrest in seven months. Too bad because I really believe Billy is a decent person who just made some poor choices. I hope he lands on his feet somewhere. No question it will hurt the team. Billy was just coming into his own as a player.
Then, of course, I learned of Uga VI’s tragic passing Saturday morning. At this point I was traveling home from Northwest Florida and was able to receive the call from our news desk that Uga had died of heart failure. I was able to help out with a couple of calls as I drove. I can’t say it was a complete shock. At nearly 10, Uga was very old for a bulldog and, at 65 pounds, a good bit overweight. But there had been no recent indications he was not well.
I’ll be attending Uga’s burial at Sanford Stadium this afternoon and will file a report for the UGA page as soon as possible. It’ll be the first one of these that I’ll see in person. Oddly enough I’m not sure what to wear.
Anyway, I’m back on the scene and will be providing news and updates daily. So stay tuned.

Reality Check, do you know something about Bobo’s son’s overfeeding of a poor creature that needs to be investigated. Someone call PETA and they will send a naked chick to protest in Coach Bobo’s yard.

While I kind of agree that covering the funeral of a dog is a bit out there, you have to remember Uga isn’t just another dog. He’s one of the most famous mascots in college history. Heck, even Fox news reported his death.

I really cannot understand the ridiculous hate posts from this weekend and now today. Had I been living in Baton Rouge when Mike the Tiger died, I certainly would not have gone on the LSU blogs acting like an idiot and disrespecting their school traditions and mascot. There are also several jerk UGA bloggers that put assanine comments on the Tech blogs and they are morons, too. Those of us that are dog owners/lovers feel empathy for the Seiler family, and as UGA grads/fans pause to remember all of the great memories provided by all of the Ugas over the last 52 years. When the blog topics are about the games, etc., spew your crap; I don’t care. But to be rude and disrespectful of a lost family pet and University mascot identified with by thousands of fans & children is just sick.

Hi Chip, and welcome back. Thanks for covering the funeral for UGA VI. I’m hoping you can do a follow-up on the CWS very soon. My Dad has seen on several other blogs that some Bulldog fans are saying things to the effect that Coach Perno was directly responsible for the team’s collapse after being up 5 - 0 in game two against Fresno State. I’d be interested in your opinion on this, as well as what our future looks like for next year with the loss of so many of our pitchers.

R.I.P. Uga VI. We’ll miss you. You have served Athens very well. As for you idiots that get on here and downgrade this as non-news, get a life! UGA is BY FAR the most well known and beloved mascot in the nation. You obviously haven’t walked through Sanford Stadium and seen the monuments that prove how much respect and love goes to these fine animals. You also might want to order a back order of Uga on the cover of Sports Illustrated with guess who on it. Anyway, we know you hate us because we are a superior program so continue to take the cheapest of shots at anything UGA. You only make yourselves look bad.

Newnan and P Dawg, good to hear from you guys. I don’t know why some people seem so heartless about the loss of a pet. Even John Kincaide at 680 the Fan was b!tching about all the press coverage over UGA VI. Well, he’s from Philly so I wouldn’t expect he would understand the south. Newnan you and I were talking about our dogs just last week and then this happens. I guess we’ll just have to ignore the hater’s and let them talk their smack. Good to see some relevant comments going up. I have a new motto. This sentence is the last time I will ever acknowledge the jerks that post!
Moving on, I’m glad we all got a chance to pay tribute to Uga, but I like the post by Michael above. There was quite a bit of discussion about possibly Perno’s youth as a head coach showing in a bad way during the CWS. I like Perno, but did have to question some of his decisions in the second game especially. Of course, we have that all knowing hindsight to work with, but it was kind of like the Sugar Bowl with WVU when it seemed that everyone in the Dome knew they were going to fake the punt, but somehow our coaches didn’t get the message to the players. I’d like to hear Chip and others’ take.

Don’t know what happened on that last post - I was saying I’d give him a break b/c he went to a school (Temple) w/o the football tradition of southern schools. Notice how many other SEC school fans that posted nice things this weekend. Kincade doesn’t get the excitement you see in a child’s eyes the first time they get their picture made with Uga, or how fired up the fans and players got to see Uga in his black jersey, too, etc. IMO, we also associate this Uga with the first several years of the CMR era, which has been awesome so far and is probably going to get even better. A lot of stuff like that would not register with a Temple guy.

Thanks ed. Now go find Wilbur. The bottom line is that I do feel empathy for the owners of uga6 and for pet owners who are extremely bonded to their pet. Working dogs that afford blind people some quality of life, dogs that afford cancer patients some quality of life, children who lose a pet, etc…..have my respect. For any university to lose an animal mascot and for those who so call mourn its passing, does not command respect, and receive the extensive media attention. There are to many humans dying that warrant media coverage and our respect.

I am sick and tired of these arrest. I don’t like the game suspensions because I don’t think it really penalizes the players (mostly the team and fans). They should start taking scholarship $’s away or something that will really impact the individuals. Secondly, the Athens police need to get a grip. So there was BBQ and fist fight…did we really arrest college kids for this 20 years ago? If there are drugs/guns/knives involved lock their butt up but some of this stuff is ridiculous. I don’t know the answer but every school has an issue with it. Again we need some punishment that REALLY hurts the offender and making them watch a couple of games is not working for any school. I would like to see the NCAA “BAN Players” for two years for felony convictions so that they cannot play at any school at any level. Thugs are thugs and will not be influenced but we must get some solid individual punishment to scare the good kids to stay clean!

SlickWillie,
So you have a philosophy where “respect” and sympathy are zero sum, meaning that if you mourn the passing of a dog you are lessening the “respect” and sympathies for dying humans. What a strange and somewhat sad theory.
And re: your first post, most people have too much to worry about in their own families and jobs to give a flying rip about why someone in Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Lithuania, or Korea might “hate” us.

this must stop - If a kid does something serious like the bama or tech player - he gets booted from the team or suspended. A fist fight at a BBQ doesn’t sound that serious to me. Sounds like they should be doing mat drills at 5 am and running steps. Sending them home and kicking guys off the team helps no one. For the record we now have a player arrested for owning a gun legally but just having it under his seat instead of the glove box. We have a basketball player who blew a total of .02 and .03 in two separate incidents that got him arrested. If he were over 21 he would have been way under the legal limit. (can’t believe a college would drink) and three players arrested for getting in a fist fight at a BBQ. Sounds like either bad luck or a police force with too much time on their hands.

charlotte dawg, no, they have my respect & sympathy. I agree most families have to much to worry about to care about what other countries think of us. The same holds true for the loss of a university mascot. My empathy is for the owner and not the fan base. Life goes on.

Please read my earlier post and pay attention this time! My point is that some of these “arrest” are ridiclous…meaning the cops need to just break up fist fights and go find real criminals if they want to lock somebody up in jail. If the incidents are real issues (guns/knives/drugs etc…) lock there butt up and prevent them from playing for any team for a couple of years. The main point is a two game suspension or even kicking them off the team does not work when they can simply go play at another level school on full scholarship the next week. Maybe someboby has a better answer but all I know is that I am sick of the BS petty arrest made by the police for silly crap like college kids in a fist fight and the BS punishment that schools give out when the arrest are real and serious!

As usual, nobody exactly knows what happened. But as near one can tell by this article Micheal Lemon apparently beat the crap out of this guy sending him to the hospital. A little more than a fistfight.
According to this article, what Anderson and Sturdivant did was not so serious. Apparently one of them touched a pregnant woman they did not know on the stomach and she didn’t like it. They didn’t beat up a pregnant woman like some people are claiming.

The Lemon case looks like a serious incident. He may have some issues, his mom was murdered last year. Regardless of the seriousness of the incident, its not that hard to keep your hands to yourself. Its one of the basic rules of socialization that you learn when you are like 3. These guys are grown men. Please do not make apologies for them. Lets leave that to the Techies. Unlike them we shouldn’t try to sweep our problems under the rug and hush hush all our embarassing incidents. They’ve got a myth that they need to keep alive to justify their athletic mediocrity. We don’t. Fortunately we aren’t that pathetic. The Techies always play dumb when faced with this sad reality, but deep down inside they know exactly what I’m talking about.
I digress. Maybe the Athens area police are targeting UGA players but so what? If you break the law you break the law. I don’t think they were entraped in to punching someone and touching the pregnant girl’s belly. That would be tough to pull off. Maybe a regular student could get away with this stuff but these guys are not regular students. That’s just the reality.
I’m sick of this foolish crap every single summer. It is extremely selfish of these guys to act like this. The 95% of the football team that can keep themselves out of trouble will be left to pick up the slack. Not only that, but when one player acts up it reflects poorly on the whole team. Fair or not, its just another reality.

Oooohhhh, get a freakin grip. Gangsta? Two guys touched a girl. A guy gets arrested for having a licensed weapon in his vehicle, just not in the glove box, a guy has too much to drink and hails down a cab and it turns out to be a cop instead (funny but incredibly unlucky, Munzemier was at least not going to drive), unfortunately 2 others supposably didn’t use good judgement (cases pending) and got DUI. And now we have one alledged bad case of battery with Lemon.
People, don’t just read the headlines here. The AJC loves it when news likes this breaks. They want you to see “concealed weapon” not “the young man was very cordially with the police when he told them that he did in fact have a firearm in his car that he keeps for saftey reasons” - which every Georgian with a firearms license has the right to do.
But please guys, don’t tick off Ben. If he turns in his tickets because he dissaproves of your behavior who will fill his seats?

Looks like we just got some more points for the Fulmer Cup. The Lemon case seems to be the more serious. I don’t know the circumstances of the touching of the preganant woman but I was raised to not touch a woman that did not want to be touched. Evidently she did not. Looks like we will have to get rid of some red shirts just to have a line for the first few games.
I know of no one who has not been distressed over the loss of a family pet. And not only was UGA the family pet of the Seiller’s, he was the official family pet of the Bulldawg Nation family. Unless they have lowered the typical college age, those young men are adults. They’d better know better. They can coast on MR’s halo only so long.
The Athens police MUST keep a tight rein on the citizens there. There is a great deal of thuggery and thievery there and immense pressure on the police to safeguard the Cobb County college students. I salute the A-CC police for not being intimidated by the power of UGA sports, and for trying to keep Athens a great place to live.

You In-bred rednecks need to get a clue. Here at Georgia Tech we don’t have this issue. A. we don’t have girls and B. the ones we do have all have adams apple’s. Our stand-up student athletes get arrested for more serious stuff. Like raping women, hit and run, having a serious amount of drugs shipped to there dorm room and lets not mention how our pitchers overdose on illegal drugs and dies. I mean clearly our team is better then your at getting in to trouble. I mean rape is much more serious then touching a woman’s pregnant belly. Now I am going to start telling you how much smarter I am then you guys are. I mean my qb thinks that you have 5 downs in football.
Oh yeah guys I like to have sacks put on my chin. Does that make me gay?
Here in a minute I am going to really start talking tough and throw out a bunch of threats and act all tough. Hopefully mom and dad will let me finish this game of world of warcraft before dinner. Does anyone think its strange that I am 35 years old and still live at home? What does it feel like to kiss a girl?

Just wondering, exactly why is a pregnant woman, who is not a UGA student hanging around a college dorm at 2:00 in the morning anyway? She has also released her name to the press. Sounds like someone wants their fifteen minutes of fame. Seems to me like she has more to worry about than being touched on her stomach.

To those of You that made comments about recruiting “thugs”, Trinton had a 4.01 HS average and was Valedictorian of His class. I thought He would be the last to have a problem. BTW, both guys deny doing anything improper. Maybe We should wait and see on this one.

I cannot believe that the two football players were arrested for touching a pregnant woman’s stomach! I have two children and during both pregnancies had people touch my stomach—and most of them were not invited to do so. Big deal! This constitutes simple battery?? Unbelievable! I am speechless.
