Hot times expected at Foley Field
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
So I’m standing in the Georgia dugout at Foley Field yesterday waiting on coach David Perno to come out of the locker room when the fan a few feet to the left of me begins to make some gosh-awful sounds. It was a smaller version of one of those big mist-producing fans you see on the sidelines at football games. Then it clanked and clanged and finally it stopped all together. Team trainer Mike Dillon quickly came over to tend to it but, after only a short while, pronounced the fan dead on the scene.
Perhaps that’s a good omen for the Diamond Dogs, who come into Friday’s NCAA Super Regional against N.C. State as one of the hottest teams in the nation. With a noon start and their dugout fan on the fritz it doesn’t look like they’ll be cooling off anytime soon.
Speaking of fans, it was a good sign for Georgia when today’s game sold out in one day earlier this week. In fact, the Bulldogs received an extra 400 tickets returned by N.C. State and sold out of them by Wednesday. That’s not unusual for Georgia baseball in the postseason but there was a little concern from UGA administrators when ESPN gave them noon starts Friday and Saturday. The Dogs would have much rather started at 7 p.m. but, as ever, television dictates all in sports.
Anyway, both Carter and I will be in the press box at Foley Field today and I’ll be blogging periodically from there today. The NCAA doesn’t allow you to do play-by-play for constant score updating but I’ll try to give you some periodic sights and sounds that you won’t get from television.
So stay tuned and thanks in advance for hanging out!

Fearful of what kind of “fan” you were referencing when you talked about “gosh-awful sounds”. That could’ve gotten ugly. Good luck to the DiamondDawgs, and may the real fans make lots of sounds.

HomeDawg: That’s hilarious. I didn’t take into account possible confusion over my fan reference… . And I’ve heard some strange sounds from fans out there at Foley Field the past week or so… .
By the way, I’ll be out in the stands and visiting the dudes that live behind right field early in the game but I’ll be back in the press box asap to respond to your queries, etc. C-ya!

Hey guys! Sorry just getting back to you but I spent the first few innings up behind Kudzu Hill with the guys that live in the houses up there. Those dudes are hilarious and big-time baseball fans. And they really know their team. I’m writing a story about them that will be up later… .
A few observations:
Georgia obviously in all-white. Dogs weren’t going for a “white-out.” It was just to try to stay cool… . It’s not just a little hot, it’s melt-stuff hot. I feel for the folks sitting in the sun, which is the great majority of nearly 4,000 folks here. The sun is not at a good angle for shade even for the guys under the roof areas… . N.C. State is a good-looking team. Georgia did a great job getting four runs off Shunick because he’s throwing some good stuff. Only Peisel (two Ks) is really struggling at the plate. Poythress is 2-for-2 with a RBI, giving him 10 in the last four games… . Georgia’s given up only two solo shots… .
Last inning N.C. State had the umpire come out and check Trevor Holder’s hat to make sure he wasn’t using something to enhance his pitches. Blue didn’t find anything. Probably just mind games.

Gametracker — Click on the UGA Gametracker. It’s a little confusing as it has UGA in the white shirts. UGA is the home team - top of the 5th, NC State has 2 outs, 1 guy at 2nd, and UGA leads 4 - 2.

So much for N.C. State’s vaunted pitching staff. Dogs up to nine runs again (only scored fewer once in NCAA tourney) after Joey Lewis’ two-run off reliever Drew Taylor right after he came into the game. Georgia is really swinging the bats… .
Just as big is UGA starter Trevor Holder. After coming in with a 14.65 era in last three games, he settled down after two early homers and is cruising right now. More importantly, not showing any signs of trouble from his shoulder. Must be that spitball!

GEORGIA TRUMPING WOLFPACK ON PITCHING: Bottom of eighth now and Dogs still up 9-2. Another great double play… . N.C. State’s Clayton Shunick’s eight runs allowed is the most he’s given up in the last two seasons. He came in with a 2.16 ERA… . Conversely, Georgia’s Holder pitches past the seventh inning for the first time in his career. Had gone seven innings four times this season… . It’ll be interesting to see if Perno lets Holder try to go the whole way or whether or not he might want to bring in Fields in the ninth just to get him a little work.

By Chip Towers
June 6, 2008 3:03 PM | Link to this
It’s in the books! Georgia has won Game One of the NCAA Athens Super Regional 11-4 over N.C. State. Never mind the two meaningless runs late, it was an impressive victory all the way around and sets up the Dogs well for the rest of the best-of-three tournament.
That’s thanks mainly to starting pitcher Trevor Holder, who pitched 8 2/3 innings to save UGA’s staff for the rest of the weekend. He almost had a complete game effort before a walk and HBP chased him. The Dogs brought in Justin Earls to finish the game and a walk and a boot by Gordon Beckham led to two unearned runs. The three errors weren’t good but 11 hits, 11 runs, two pitchers, one win — That was priceless for Georgia! …
I want to thank you guys for hanging out in here and conversing with us today. Please feel free to blog on and I’ll check in later but I have to get busy now on my feature story on the “Right-Field Dudes.” You can be sure you’re presence on these blogs is noticed and appreciated by everybody at the AJC. No need to get excited in Athens. UGA will most likely get past NC State, but will get body slammed by Miami, the number 1 seed. Miami is just too good and the Dogs are out of gas.
You see sooner or later UGA has to go on the road and we all know that UGA cannot win baseball games on the road, and they can only win when they host, which includes most sports in Athens.
That is the reason UGA always wants to host, because it is the only way they can win a ballgame. I predict UGA will take 2 in a row from NC State, then the #$#$ will hit the fan when they face Miami.
If any UGA fans think otherwise, I suggest you put your money where your mouth is.

This is quoted from Orson Swindle’s Every Day Should Be Saturday (edsbs.com):
” A rumor sizzled around various message boards yesterday that Knowshon Moreno was in some form of trouble at UGA, thus sending a white dove of giddy hope springing from our ear and soaring o’er the heav’ns in celebration. (Nothing harmful; we just hoped he done something like given up football for a lucrative career as a blogger, or gotten religion Mase-style, or perhaps sought to become a red-eyed yogi like Ricky Williams.)
Of course, it was crap. Knowshon, according to our sources, just got a little too attitudinal for the coaches’ liking and was sent home following the spring semester to live with his family and then, after having sense knocked into him by family, was itching to come back. So, in short: nothin’ from nothin’. Knowshon seems more than ready to crank that in the fall. Celebrate or mourn, depending on your team affiliation.”
He doesn’t name a source or provide a link.
Great game Dawgs. I was able to listen at work. I can think of no better way to ruin a day’s productivity than listening to a Dawg win.

There are now 19 preseason football polls, as I know it.
NOLA (whatever that is Ohio State 1 Georgia 2), ESPN (Ohio State 1 Georgia 2), CBS Sportsline (Ohio State 1 Georgia 2), Sporting News (Georgia 1 Ohio State 2), Bleacher Report (whatever that is has Ohio State 1 UGA 3.), and the Dallas Star-Telegram (whatever that is Georgia 1 Ohio State 2), CSTV (UGA 1 Ohio State 4), Lindy’s Sports (UGA 1 Ohio State 3), College Football Poll (UGA 4 Ohio State 7), Southern Pigskin (Ohio State 2 Georgia 4), Atlanta Journal-Constitution (Georgia 1 Ohio State 5), Associated Content (Georgia 1 Ohio State 8), Yard Barker (Georgia 1 Ohio State 5), The Big Lead (Georgia 1 Ohio State 3), Athlon Sports (Ohio State 2 Georgia 5), Scout.com (Ohio State 1 Georgia 2), Rivals.com (Georgia 2 Ohio State 3), National Champs.net (Ohio State 1 Georgia 2), and Sports Illustrated (Georgia 1 Ohio State 2.)
Average Ranking of 19 pre-season polls :
The average of all polls I can find shows :
3.0 Average Ohio State Ranking 1.9 Average Georgia Bulldogs Ranking
The facts of the matter are, that it is not close that across the nation Ohio State is not well-respected and for good damn reason. It is a stinky 1-team conference and has been that Ohio State plays in. Oh, and by the way Ohio State has NEVER ever beat an SEC team in any bowl game ever.
Ohio State.

Oh yes, It is widely know to those of us in Texas that Oklahoma has the largest number of fans of any school that have never seen the inside of a classroom. Are you a high school graduate? Dodson was absolutely cruising; if taking Dodson out of the game costs UGA a chance at Omaha I will be severely PO’d. Especially if Miami, CSF, and FSU get beat out in the round of 16. Extremely dumb decision that puts them in a winner take all game that is completely unnecessary as UGA clearly has the better overall talent. Watching the game it seemed as if UGA had State where it wanted and that they were bound to score a few more runs in the late innings. The national championship series is for the taking and that quick hook may cost them their best chance in a really long time.

Ha Ha …. The pups get no respect, no respect from espn. No respect in football either. According to espn you must have a compelling program.

Same thing here in Southern California—so frustrating. Why is the LSU/Irvine game on every single ESPN channel that is carrying college baseball??! Ridiculous.

The reason ESPN doesn’t think the Dawgs game is compelling has to be because the Dawgs are killing the Wolfpack 12-3 in the top of the 7th.
Go Dawgs!!

We regret at ESPN that our decision to switch to the LSU and Cal Irvine has caused an inconvenience among Georgia Fans. There were two compelling reasons on why the decisions were made. Our First reason was because of the larger viewership markets in California and Louisiana. Secondly, the Foley Field Regionals were the easiest baseball regionals for the on the road to Omaha. Ofcourse, we at ESPN were very impressed with the level and strength of competition at the LSU regionals with Cal Irvine and # 7 LSU. Basically, for all of you Georgia inbreds who still can not understand, it came purely down to simple economics. Sincerely, Tobias Tobin, V.P. ESPN Sports Marketing and Programing

Elliott Avent and Tom Holiday are sorry individuals and I hope their backsides are sore from this colossal beatdown for more than a few weeks. Hitting Lyle Allen was a classless act and the NC State program is a joke. How about recruiting better players rather than pout about getting your wolf tails handed to you by higher caliber players. Head back to Raleigh and make yourselves feel better by pounding the likes of Duke, Maryland, and Boston College. They are closer to your level of competition. You don’t deserve a sniff of Omaha. This beatdown felt even better than last week and that is saying something considering who was beaten. What an absolute joke.

Avent and his comments were as classless as the programs at NC.ST are.He should be banned from college sports. What a looser he is!!

Well, the game was on ESPN HD. 846. When UGA scored 9 runs in the 1st inning to make it 9-0, ESPN moved it to ESPN regular, Channel 46. I figured you guys would channel surf when they made that decision. It said on 46 that it was LSU Cal State Irvine. But, it was not. It was UGA killing NC State, who played the Number 68 SoS.
Choke ?
Ha ha ha ha, Tech fans.
Your Tech posts in this blog about UGA choking again and again, are so childish.
The facts are that UGA has been to as many CWS in the last 5 years as Georgia Tech has ever, all told, all-tine.
And, UGA has been to twice as many College World Series as Georgia Tech. Cupcakes with cupcake SoS.
Georgia now opens with Miami.
To the AJ-C sports-writers who stated that UGA cannot hit.
Ha ha ha.
I tried to tell that UGA hits 50 points higher than our Opponents, even though UGA has the toughest SoS of all the ACC teams.
ACC.
1 CWS NCAA Championship in baseball, ever. 1955.
UGA has 1 in 1990.
UGA is now 41-24 in NCAA Baseball Tournament Games. This is a .630 Winning Percentage, while Georgia Tech is .533 Winning Percentage in NCAA Baseball Tournament Games - including especially getting their teeth kicked in by UGA.
Gordon Beckham is hitting .401
He has 101 hits on the season and 90 runs. 202 total bases. 26 home runs. 70 RBI. He is hitting .395 against the Top 25. NC State raised it to a new level with Gordon Beckham now with 50 walks and 9 times hit by a wimp pitcher who doesn’t want to face him. The Number 8 pick overall, Gordon Beckham is a multi-millionaire. In 252 at-bats, he has struck out only 30 times. He is 17 of 18 in stealing bases against this competition of mostly Top 25 teams we have played this season.
Over a quarter of a million fans have watched UGA play Live this season. 250,294.
We have won this College World Series before. At Number 14 in the latest Directors’ Cup All Sports challenge, I don’t have to tell you that we would pass Florida by winning another. And, we have the pitching to accomplish that.

Miami of Florida has 5 NCAA National Championships in all sports ever. 1 Women’s Golf and 4 Baseball, but none with the ACC.
SoS for Miami 57.
SoS for UGA 39.
Against the current Top 25 teams in baseball this season :
9-5 Miami.
15-7-1 UGA.
3-1 NC St, 2-1 FSU, 1-2 NC, 1-0 Missouri and 2-1 Arizona. Sum total of Miami’s 14 games against Top 25 teams at 9-5.
1-2 Arizona, 1-2 Oregon State, 1-1 Florida State, 3-0 South Carolina, 3-0 Kentucky, 2-0-1 LSU, 2-1 Vanderbilt, and 2-1 NC State. Sum total of UGA’s 23 games against Top 25 teams at 15-7-1.
Miami doesn’t allow many stolen bases, but their pitching is not that great. They play small ball very well with a ton of SAC Bunts, lots of SAC Flies and a lot of stolen bases.
Of course, they were not done against many good baseball teams.
It is generally considered that Miami of Florida is the Number 1 baseball team today.
8 Losses all season long, Miami of Florida total, would do that.
Miami of Florida hits the ball well and plays solid defense.
Is Miami of Florida going to win the CWS ?
No. The ACC has NOT won the CWS since 1955, and only that 1 year have they ever. Why should 2008 be any different. The ACC plays cupcake SoS compared to UGA.
Miami of Florida has 3 world-class hitters. None are as good as Gordon Beckham.
I’d say this is a good game. Nick Montgomery should pitch.
I will remind everyone that I led the charge to find the replacement for Ron Polk and that I said steadfastly that it should be David Perno.
I have a lot of respect for teams, such as Miami of Florida, who play sound fundamental get them on, get them over, get them in baseball.
I don’t have any respect for the ACC stinky easy schedules they play.

Chipper Towers said that UGA could not hit the baseball this year.
So did Carter Strickland.
Stanford has played the Number 1 Strength of Schedule in the nation in collegiate baseball this season, and is in the College World Series. Congratulations Stanford. Impressive.
39-22 Stanford.
41-23-1 Georgia Diamond Dawgs.
SoS 2208 Baseball :
1 Stanford.
.
31 Fresno State.
.
39 UGA has played the 3rd hardest schedule of CWS teams.
.
45 Rice.
.
53 Miami of Florida.
.
64 North Carolina.
.
67 Florida State.
.
72 LSU.
.
UGA will move up to Number 6 in the College Baseball Newspaper’s June 10th NCAA Division 1 Baseball Poll from Number 7 last week because Arizona State did not make the College World Series.
Number 6 is nearly enough for UGA to pass Florida in the All Sports Trophy for the Top SEC Athletic Department in the Directors’ Cup All Sports Trophy.
Did I mention that Gordon Beckham is batting .401 despite having played 23 games to-date against the Top 25.
We play Miami of Florida this Saturday June 14th at 6 p.m. local time, which I am told is 7 p.m. our time. We have Sunday off, no matter what.

I have never had the dish network, but I thought they are supposed to have access to all 4 regions of ESPN shows. Maybe you subscribe to that package, or I may be wrong that the dish network does that. I know Satellite TV reception does because I have sat there and gone station by station through it several times on different days.
I spend a fortune on Comcast Platinum Package and have made all stations UGA has ever been on in any sport a Favorite for me to press and quickly scan through a channel surfing of all stations. Here, I saw for example 801 have the SEC Championship Game loss in HDTV for UGA. With my 65 inch plasma, I prefer HDTV when I can get it.
ESPN 46 is where I watched the game, and it was not HDTV. It was on HDTV to begin with, then when we scored 9 runs in the 1st inning, they swapped regular ESPN 46 (not HDTV) with 846 where we were in HDTV. This left it showing that LSU was playing UC Irvine on ESPN 46 non HDTV; but it was not what was actually playing after the 1st inning.
What area are you in ? I think you have a beef with Dish Network about which of the 4 regional ESPN channels they actually show in your area. I don’t know their regions, but I can assure you the programming is totally different on all 4 actual ESPN channels.
The last thing I want is to have a game like this, and never get to see it. CWS is done in streaming audio and TV.
College baseball gets a bad rap ESPN SUX, when beat writers try to say a team with a SoS of Number 63 Georgia Tech is great and SoS Number 39 UGA cannot hit the bloody baseball.
Even today, Carter Strickland keeps this B.S. up about how UGA was doing so horribly at the beginning of the season playing these 23 games against the Top 25.
15-7-1 against The Top 25 today, is a lot better than Miami of Florida’s only stinking 9-5.
And, Georgia can absolutely hit the baseball this season against the Top Baseball Teams in the nation, while shutting them down by direct comparison thereto.
David Perno is a lot better than Danny Hall. Now, beat Miami of Florida, then we can play Florida State who we are 1-1 against this season. Then, we can play LSU who we are 2-0-1 against this season in Baton Rouge. We need to win the game.
