UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Athens regional is college ball at its best
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For those of you that have said to themselves, “Aw, it’s only college baseball, who cares?”…
For those you that live in Atlanta and thought over the last few days, “I would go but it’s too much trouble to drive over to Athens. I’ll catch it on TV”…
For those of you that have reasoned you had something better to do: I’m here to tell you that you’re missing something special going on at UGA’s Foley Field the past few days.
By now, certainly most of you know that Georgia and Georgia Tech are playing at 7 p.m. tonight for the right to advance to the NCAA’s Super Regionals. The Bulldogs, after losing the opener to Lipscomb, came roaring out of the loser’s bracket and beat Georgia Tech last night 8-0 to set up a winner-takes-all game tonight. And, yes, our good friends at CSS will be there to broadcast it into your homes (those of you with cable at least). But never minding for whom one roots. The real treat lies inside the gates at historic old Foley Field.
Let me first preface my remarks with this: I’m not the biggest college baseball fan in the world. There may be some people that do but I don’t get real excited about a regular-season game lasting four hours before being decided 15-13 in 11 innings. But the NCAA tournament — or college playoffs as they might as well be called — is a different animal altogether.
The NCAA regionals I’ve covered over the years have been some of the most exciting events I’ve ever witnessed. They’re so unpredictable and no lead is ever safe. And when it comes to swinging those aluminum bats with a 314-foot porch in right field and 400 to dead center, you can be sure anything can happen. Add to that formula an intense rivalry such is Tech-Georgia and the loser-goes-home dynamic and you can bet there’ll be some crazy atmosphere tonight.
Besides all that, I’ve had the pleasure of sitting the last couple of days next to veteran sportswriter Jack Wilkinson. “Wilkie” has covered thousands of major-league baseball games and countless events over the years but he said he was taken aback by purity of the scene at Foley Field. And he’s right.
Only a few thousand can fit inside the tiny concrete stadium. Rather than bright lights and fireworks and a 200-square foot matrix board, a good mix of classic rock-n-roll, oldies and dance tunes pours politely from the speakers atop the right-center field scoreboard every half-inning. There are no advertisements on the outfield walls, only understated, white-painted graphics of championships gone by. Venders can be heard barking “peanuts” and “ice-cold Coke” and, no matter what happens on any given play, cheers go up in once section of the grandstands or another. With the name of their school stitched proudly across their chests, the players sprint to their positions and back to their respect dugouts every three outs. And regardless of outcome, the teams shake hands in the middle of the diamond at game’s end. With the exception of aluminum bats, it’s how baseball was meant to be played.
Yeah, you can see what happens on TV. But you can’t smell the hot dogs or feel the breeze; you can’t hear the pop of leather or hear “Blue” yell “strike” when the pitch was clearly an inch-and-a-half outside.
I’d say it’s worth cutting out of work an hour or two early, beating the traffic and going to bed a little late. But that’s just me.

By the way, reserved seat tickets are $12 and general admission is $10. They can be purchased by calling Georgia at 1-877-542-1231 or you can try to buy them at the gate. Scalpers have been out all weekend.

CHIP playing in the same Regional has worked out perfectly for you and the tech beat writer. Here we are, hours away from UGA and gt battling it out one last time. Loser leaves, winner moves on. OUTSTANDING! Y’all got a friendly wager on the outcome? (Maybe loser writes a week long blog for the other guys). I trust either of your professionalism, if put into that situation.
Who will take the mound for the respective schools?
Hopefully, the Diamond Dawgs score a ton of runs tonight. The gt offense WILL NOT be anything close to shut down in this one.
Go DAWGS
P.S. Is it possible to cork an aluminum bat?

Well, I try to go to as many Georgia baseball games as possible. I’ve only got to make it to the Louisville game so far. But I knew I had to go to this tonight. It took me about 30 times but I finally got through to the ticket office this morning. GO DAWGS!

Amen!!! I was one of those TV watches fools for the first game and my son begged me to take him up to Athens for the Night Game with Tech last night and my daughter got home and asked too… That was it, we jumped in the car and drove from Duluth to Athens (leaving just before 5 PM). Got up there with no tickets and $20 cash and were just gonna sit on cudzoo hill to watch.
Well, we got up there and found we could still get tix for $10 so I ran up to a nearby ATM and got a few more $$$ and we ended up sitting right behind Home Plate!!!
It was the perfect setting and a perfect game and I am so glad we did NOT watch it on TV and went up there!
Wish we could go tonight too but we have a Hockey Game !!!

This just in: The game is sold out. UGA’s John Bateman just called and told me. That apparently includes Kudzu Hill. But, like I said, scalpers have been out en force this week and there’s some decent perches in the backyards along Morton Avenue… . Those of you that can’t make it I’ll tell you about the breeze and smell of hot dogs tonight!

CSS is only available on Charter and Comcast cable systems. It is not carried by Dish Network or DirectTV.

I work at Taco Mac down the road and we run on DirecTV, however we do not get CSS. At home, I have Comcast and CSS is channel 45. I would assume that DirecTV doesn’t receive CSS, but I would highly recommend finding somewhere that has Comcast, because this game will be worth it.

Matt:
I don’t think DirecTV carries CSS. It is a sports network operated jointly by Comcast and Charter. For that reason, I believe it is carried only (or at least mostly) by those two companies’ cable networks in the southeast.
A buddy of mine got DirecTV a couple of years ago, and he really misses having CSS…

On football, many of you have inquired often about the eligibility of coveted wide receiver prospect A.J. Green. I always refrain from such discussions out of respect to the student-athletes and their individual struggles to achieve admission to college. But, for what it’s worth, Green arrived on campus this week and is enrolled in summer classes, along with most of the 2008 signing class. As far as I can tell there is only one signee that might not make it by August… . In case you missed it, ESPN’s Outside the Lines did a great piece on Green’s high school, Summerville (S.C) winning the state basketball championship. A.J. is interviewed on it a couple of times. Very moving vignette on their late coach who was a fireman among the “Charleston 9” that died fighting a blaze last summer.

Somebody asked about starting pitchers: Georgia is going to go with either LHP Alex McRee (5-1, 3.75) or RHP Justin Grimm (0-1, 8.90). Tech will start RHP Zach Von Tersch (7-5, 4.14).

I agree with Chip’s assesment. I live in Athens and try to make several games a year. And yes, college baseball can be gruesome to withstand at times but when it comes to regionals and super regionals it is absolutely amazing. I’ve been to many sporting events at all levels and the two regionals (2001 and 2006) were some of the most amazing sproting events I’ve ever witnessed. I really can’t explain it but it really is something special.

Can someone please explain to me why Perno started this guy Grimm? This has to be one of the dumbest moves I have seen in a long time. He’s has two second team all-sec pitchers that are both ready to go and he starts a guy that has given up 29 ER in 29 innings.
By DWG

What, and miss all of the action on the AJC “Game Tracker”! Does that thing even work? ESPN has already posted scores and nothing at the AJC. Does Chip go to a pay phone every three innings to call in the score? 3-2 Dawgs so far in the first. Looks like it’s going to be a real pitchers duel.

By Chip Towers
June 2, 2008 8:30 PM | Link to this
Hey guys. We’re not allowed to update the score or give any play-by-play, so says the NCAA. But it’s 6-5 Georgia in the bottom of the second… .
On that note, nobody here in the Foley Field press box was surprised to see Georgia’s 3-0 lead evaporate in the bottom of the first. In fact, we took a few friendly bets before the game on over-under for runs scored in the game. I set the line at 18 runs and immediately drew (friendly) wagers from two of my colleagues. As you could imagine, they were dogging me pretty bad as we stood at eight runs in one inning (now 11 thru two). I was glad to see that goose egg go up last inning… .
Not sure what all you can see on TV but there are people everywhere trying to get a glimpse of the game. It was a sellout, as I told you earlier, so some folks have found some creative perches. The backyard of the house on the corner of Pinecrest and Morton is absolutely packed. Not sure if the guy is charging for parking or admission but he’s making a mint if he is. Meanwhile, you’ve got people sitting inside the tennis complex watching over the right-center field wall, they’re all along the fences down left field and in the outfield corner. There even are people tailgating and watching from the top floor of the Coliseum parking deck. So whatever they give out as the attendance tonight will be lower than the number of actual folks watching… .
Another goose egg in the third. Suddenly I’m not feeling so bad.

GO DAWGS!!! College baseball playoffs are longer than the NHL or NBA. I am still for a football playoff, but I think maybe a “plus two” at the most. How many teams go to Omaha?

POSTGAME NOTES: As you might imagine Georgia was well represented on the NCAA Athens Regional All-Tournament team. They had six players, led by right fielder Matt Olson, who was named the regional’s MVP after going 15-for-20 (.750) in the last four games. Also on the squad were Gordon Beckham, Rich Poythress, Ryan Peisel, Bryce Massanari and Nick Montgomery… . Charlie Blackmon and Jason Haniger made it for Tech… .
This is an incredible stat: Dogs now are 15-0 in elimination games at Foley Field… . They are 6-2 vs. Tech in NCAA regionals since 2001… .
Just got the schedule for the Super Regional versus N.C. State — Friday at noon (ESPN), Saturday at noon (ESPN2), Sunday at 4 p.m. (ESPN)… . Tickets go on sale Thursday at 8:30 a.m. You can call 1-877-542-1231 or go to www.georgiadogs.com.

1.How crazy was it at Foley Field when the last out was recorded?
2.Since the Super Regional starts Fri…I guess I’ll wait till Thurs/VERY early Fri to ask who the starters are.
3. How do the players and coaches feel about this HUGE victory, with a MARATHON left to run?
Thanks for your time and GO DAWGS!

Mr. kl, I believe your trade school education has failed you. You have been misinformed on the statistics. UGA beat “tech” in basketball, and now we have also beaten “tech” three out of five times in baseball. You cannot possibly argue that the acc is ahead of the SEC in the sports that matter, i.e. football, and basketball. When Florida has won the last two out of three basketball national titles. And I can’t remember the last time the SEC did not win the National Championship in football. It is clear that no one on this site is “boasting,” and you have labeled yourself yet another whiny techie who is in denial about UGA’s continued athletic prowess. GO Dawgs.

Here’s why college baseball fails to really grab my attention:
1-Too many games, too few pitchers….hence a joke game like last night. The good HS pitchers go pro, then the late bloomers turn into the ace and/or closer and then you are pitching the rest who are average and overwhelmed by good college hitters.
2-Aluminum bats….too many texas leagers that should’ve been outs.
3-DH…not enough strategy, stealing, moving runners.
I am glad for the Dawgs and will root for them, but it’s just not real baseball.

For a scary minute there I thought you said, “…good luck on out towards Obama.” The atmosphere in Athens all 4 days was great. I don’t know why we all still get so excited by beating Tech, it has become routine. I guess because they hate us so much and we love to see the dejected looks on their faces when they loose to us again. Our Tech friends still have hope and still talk big, but they know their athletics will never challenge us. They still look down their noses at Georgia people and claim to be superior to us academically. Tech is a great school for certain things, but so is Georgia. Let’s be good winners and console our Yellow Jacket buds.

Dear Fleabags,
Congratulations on your victory and advancement. That was quite a display of hitting to be sure. Although watching GT get behind every hitter 2-0 certainly helped the cause, I’ll give credit where it’s due, your bat’s had our pitchers trying to be too cute. Oh yea, THWG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Making it oh, so sweet for most of the 3,518 fans inside the park and the hundreds of others outside, it came against archrival Georgia Tech, 18-6 Monday night. For those counting, and surely all those in red and black who can are, Georgia has a 6-2 record against Tech in the NCAA tournament this decade.”
Jeez, I crack myself up.
Toodles, poodles!!

Hi,I’m Seong-Ho,Yoon living in Jinhae City southkorea now.
AJC.com brave bulletin I can’t write from yesterday now.
Something fraude exist I sensed and I want to send messege to people of Atlanta Braves.
I didn’t meet and talk with any people of USA from past to now for important things.
I didn’t receive any money from people of USA. Keep in mind.
Babylon now can threathen my families and relatives freely. Keep in mind.
May the force of Messiah be with you
P.S:P.S: Below is my blog’s some article
Freemason
Theseday it is easy for you to read articles about freemason ruling whole world in the web. But, really speaking, this is trick of the most malevolent Babylonian living in korean peninsla for the purpose of imputating their sins to freemason and the original culprit are Baylonian whose language is korean.
And what is Freemason?
[18Century passport of Freemason]
The painting upper direction was in the passport of Freemason in 1785. Look presicely.
In top-most, the world Justice exist. God is Conscience and Justice sense.
In the below, Someone’s face is painted like Sun, and the middle of his forehead is wide, dark eyebrow, nose a little wider than the white, and you can find this face is something like Asian. Yeh Solomon, Osiris, Messiah,Lion’s face.
In the below again, Isis and another wife exist, and in center of both located Pheonix which means the guardian of Isis.
In the left side, Pyramid is and in right You can catch the flags of Judah’s 12tribe.
The sentence of script I can’t read for this word I don’t know well. ^*^
After all, this Freemason meant that people who didn’t forget Solomon and waited Osiris, and they were connected with Judah’s 12Kingdum. They knew so well about reality theeseday I am writting over the world.
[Article about Messiah]
And upper document someone wrote I think you need to contact, but never easily you could meet with them I think. But, they don’t know this fact “Allah is Messiah” and they would be people of Judah. The good people have to hand in hand with them, and you can’t trust people who don’t want to meet and help me, if they would avoid me they must be slave or descendant of not Judah but Israel. Person who can’t talk about Neutron and Resonance Schumann would be like witches and wizards who can’t tell “Voldmort” and you can’t trust them all and unbelievable. Originally Freemason pursuited the whole kinds of Justice about history, laws, economy, etc, and Freemason who chase Common Sense Babylon made must be slave or hyperjesus.
This Freemason was started to be fully attacked by Neutron from 1880’, so they caught the information about Neutron by intelligence office, they informed this secret to Judahs’ 12tribe’s Kingdums, World War1,2 were occurred by very this information You exactly have to know I think. Freemason informed the King of Japan and Japan invaded korean peninsla and southchina, but the insufficient information couldn’t defend themselves from implanting spy, therefore Implanted inslaved bosses of Japan attacked Hawai Island by the order from Babylonian who was living in north china and southafrica.
If Freemason would dislike the war about Babylon, that is proof of inslavery, because they were people who named Atomic Bomb to Neutron Clear Bomb. This fact the kings of Judah’s 12tribe couldn’t tell a nation for poor scientific knowledge, and they didn’t want to make nation to be horrified.
Mr.Obama is Freemason 32th degree I found article about him theseday. And he quit Jesus Religion. This fact is enormous hope to the good people in Asia around.
May The Bright Morning Star be with you Real Freemason ^*^
