UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Barking picks up in tennis final
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
All right, I’m not really sure how much blogging may be going on during Georgia’s NCAA Championship match against Texas — which is set to start a little after 7 p.m. EST here in Tulsa but may get started late due to women’s match — but I figured I’d file a new entry so those of you that care to converse can as the match commences. I’ll try to update you with details if and when I can but I’ll be under a bear of a deadline tonight so don’t know what I’ll be able to do.
Anyway, the electricity has definitely turned up a notch. The legendary Dan Magill flew in today, as did Georgia AD Damon Evans and most of the senior staff. ESPN’s mighty broadcast trucks have pulled in and taken over the main walk into the stadium and pointed their giant satellite dish toward the stars and brought in giant banks of lights for the back courst. The women’s match is ongoing but a steady stream of patrons is starting to file in for the marquee men’s match this evening. You know the participants must have the hairs on the back of their necks standing up.
Like I said, blog away and I’ll check in when I can with some insights you might not be able to find otherwise.

Just came in from doubles to grab my computer. Match didn’t get underway until right at 8 p.m. so it’s going to be very late in finishing… . Dogs went down quick 4-0 at No. 1 but came back for 4-2. Games were on serve at other two spots. UT is real good in doubles so wouldn’t be a surprise if the Horns got the doubles point.

Anyone out there that can provide updates it would be very much appreciated. Has anyone found a site for live scoring updates—I cannot find anything at all.

Doubles point goes to Longhorns. Dogs gave them a scare though. Hunt and Schnugg came all the way back from down 0-4 to lead 8-7 with Hunt serving tied 30-all. But Flores and Garrapiz went down fast in the 14th game at No. 2 to lose 8-6… . So same scenario as last night against Virginia: Dogs go to singles down 0-1.

Nice win UGA. Watched it on TV and online. I cannot say much for the ESPN broadcast, but how much practice do they get? It is amazing to see the all-time champs in NCAA champs in tennis with the 3 California teams at 15+ championships, then UGA with 6, then William and Mary with 2 - everyone else 1. IMPRESSIVE!!! Especially in a more competitive college tennis world. UGA seems to benefit from the short trip across the pond. Still, Athens is much prettier than Atlanta. Go Diamond Dawgs…

Go Dawgs, national champs twice in a row!! Sweet to win one away from Athens. I knew it was ours to lose after we beat Virginia, even though I was a little nervous after Texas took the doubles point, but I still felt our singles depth would pull us through. Congrats Net Dawgs!! Tennis dynasty!

Anybody know if the Dogs won? … Little joke there… . real little… .
Anyway, here comes a behind-the-scenes admission — I missed the clinching moment by Helgeson. I had back to the media tent just minutes before as Helgeson looked like he was about to go ahead 5-3. I went to grab my computer and start putting some words together. By the time I’d called the office to advise and got back to court one, Helgeson was getting mobbed by his teammates… .
What a perfectly-scripted ending, with the senior co-captain coming from behind to clinch the championship match against his old school. And to his credit, Helgeson always downplayed that whole transfer-from-Texas thing. He was also gracious about saying it was a great program and a touogh team but he just needed a change… .
As for the team a truly remarkable accomplishment. Nobody could have seen this coming after losing John Isner and Matic “Omie” Omerzel off that dynamo of last season. Isner, by the way, was tuning in via computer in the wee hours of the night in Austria… .
Here’s some facts and figures to sink your teeth into: The Bulldogs finish 27-3 in their “rebuilding year.” … It was their sixth NCAA championship. The other five had all come in Athens… . Dogs trail only Stanford (15) in national titles since the team format was established in 1977… . Georgia is also the first repeat champion since Stanford won four in a row from 1995-98… .
The Bulldogs lost the doubles point for the second straight match and the sixth time this season but were 4-2 in those matches… . Nate Schnugg was named tournament MVP… . Schnugg (9-0), Luis Flores (7-0), and Jamie Hunt (4-0) have never lost an NCAA tournament match and are now 20-0 combined… .
Schnugg told me he was leaving school in the fall to give pro tennis a try. However, he could return to Georgia is he doesn’t tear it up and make too much money and, in fact, thinks he’ll probably be back in the spring… .
Again, thanks for spending some time here. I’ll check in later.

What a great tradition the DAWGS tennis have build. They have have truely been a tennis powerhouse from the early days of Dan McGill. It all started in the 60’s with the arival of Henry Fields and Danny Birchmore. I am proud to say that Henry was a good friend of mine.
I am very proud of them, and it is good to be a DAWG. I watched it on ESPNU.

Chip,
Can you do a a feature or blog thread on how the Sears Cup all sports competition is scored or determined (and, obviously, how UGA stands in it this year)?
