UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Living on Tulsa time
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greetings from Tulsa once again. I’m at the $15 million Michael D. Case Tennis Center watching the defending national champion Georgia men’s team put a hurting on Pepperdine in the round of 16.
The Bulldogs smoked them for the doubles point, winning 8-1 and 8-2 at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Then, after stumbling a little out of the gate in singles, regained their footing and are rolling now. At this minute they’ve won five first sets so it’s just a matter of time before they clinch it 4-0.
Now, on to the town of Tulsa. Thanks again for the many suggestions of where to go and what to do. I still haven’t been able to go out to dinner yet, per se, but I did get to sample a little of the nightlife last night. Make that late-night, nightlife because I didn’t get out of the tennis complex until 11:30 local time.
I met a couple of Georgia sports information guys at a place they chose down on Cherry Street, the “Gray Snail Saloon.” It was a great place if you’re in your 20s and I’m not. So after standing in front of the bar for 15 minutes with my ribs rattling to hip-hop holding up a twenty for the bartender to please get me a beer only to see him walk away to get straws to fill the dispenser then come back and serve the young lady behind me and to my right, I decided to leave. Never did get that beer.
I proceeded to a place called “Buckaneers” Tulsadog recommended as “a great dive” not too far away on Harvard Avenue. It definitely was a dive and was filled with some interesting characters. It was karaoke night, as it turns out, and a couple of ladies did their own version of Coyote Ugly on the bar. I finally got my beer but I didn’t stay long as the loud, bad singing and the smoke was getting the best of me. Yes, they smoke inside the bars here.
So, anyway, with any luck I’ll get done in time tonight to try one of your many dinner recommendations. So stay tuned. I know this is riveting stuff!
Dogs are about to clinch so I’ll check in later.

Nice win by the Dogs today. Here’s a link through the University of Tulsa’s website where you can watch the action at the Case Tennis Center. http://tulsahurricane.cstv.com/livestats/m-tennis/TulsaTennis.html

OK, Dogs ended up clinching 4-1. Travis Helgeson, ranked No. 4 in the nation, was upset by No. 37-ranked Bassam Beidas at No. 1 singles… . But the story of this match was Jamie Hunt’s comeback at No. 4. He hasn’t lost in singles in 18 matches but found himself down 5-0 before rallying to win seven straight games and win the set. Never mind that his match was suspended with him leading 5-4 in the second set, his was an unbelievable comeback that seemed to inspire the whole team… . Christian Vitulli, playing the court next to Hunt, clinched the match 6-3, 6-4.

Dogs get the winner of Ole Miss-North Carolina match, which is ongoing. Rebels surprisingly lost the doubles point but are up at three singles spots. Could go either way.

Chip: Seems like only Virigina and Ohio St. and maybe another team or 2 are the only teams that could beat the Dawgs..what do you think? Also, at the end of last year, I thought that N.Schnugg looked to be the “most talented” player going into this season…do you think he’s #1 position level at this moment?

What UGA is doing right this moment in all these sports, just before the Final NACDA Directors’ Cup is handed out, is to propel UGA way up the list again this season in the all sports trophy.

Dogs just won the doubles point over Ole Miss. Most impressive was the 8-4 win at No. 1 by Jamie Hunt and Nate Schugg. The guys they were playing were ranked No. 5 nationally and they’re 17th, so UGA definitely served notice. Point was clinched at No. 2 by Luis Flores and Javy Garrapiz. Dogs No. 3 team was tied 6-6 and on serve… . Georgia now needs to win just three of the six singles matches to advance to the semifinals for the third straight season.

OK, Roy, Georgia won first sets in five of its six singles spots. The only position it lost, oddly enough, was at Jamie Hunt’s No. 4. He hasn’t lost there in 19 straight matches, so that was a surprise… .
For live scoring and such you should be able to find what you need on the Tulsa website. Just google “Tulsa athletics” and you’ll find your way there.

I have something to say about Georgia Bulldogs’ SPORTS.
And, it is not about how great AltamahaDawg says he is - which is just a Flame of someone that day in here as his only entries in the Georgia Bulldogs’ Blog.
Ohio State would never have beat UGA last year in football.
Or, any of the other SEC teams last year.
The crowds are the same for the NFL regular season games, as they are for the NFL playoffs. No different whatsoever.
Regular season games, especially if it can be shown to be beneficial to more than just Big 10 and Pac-10 Ohio State and Southern California, will become even more of a big game and big draw.
Right now, if you are from a conference that has 1 football program like Southern California is in the Pac-10 or like Ohio State is in the Big 10, then your football games against their Opponent that week is more amplified than just won/lost record against cupcakes and creampuff powder-puff “opponents.”
For example last season’s NCAA Number 73 Strength of Schedule for Southern California and Number 38 SoS for Ohio State (This includes their BCS Game Opponent.) would have to stand on the merits of those wuss opponents.
Their won/loss record would not mean as much as who in the blazes they beat who were in fact Top 25 teams.
By ............................................BuLLdawg
May 19, 2008 5:36 AM | Link to this
Then, they would want to play a Championship Game in those conferences like the Pac-10 and the Big 10. Then, another team would actually become good in those conferences. Then, the winner of that game would actually be able to put up a game against all the other conferences who do have Championship Games.
The regular season games would be even more meaningful. Bigger Games. More important games.
All that matters right now is can the Big 10 and Pac-10 top team go undefeated. If they can, then they are in the NCAA BCS National Title game, no matter who in the hell it is they actually did beat.
I hardly think that Ohio State beating 1 ranked team all season long and that 1 team Wisconsin who in turn beat no ranked team all season long, qualified Ohio State to play LSU last season who beat who Number 1, Number 3, Number 12, Number 16 and Number 23.
The facts of the matter are that all those 5 wins by LSU last season over Top 25 teams were in games that basically everyone out West and everyone up North hoped would cause LSU to lose those 5 games instead, and keep LSU out of the NCAA BCS National Championship Game in favor of some 1 team conference like Southern California with no conference championship game and no good win all season long last year.
And, it would have. But, LSU won all 5 of those games to the chagrin of Southern California with their NCAA SoS Number 73.
http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/Internet/toughest%20schedule/ia9gamescumm.pdf
It’s frustrating to be stonewalled by fans of college football programs who play nothing but cupcakes, don’t want to have to play a conference championship game, and want instead to talk about the integrity of the regular season and how that integrity of the regular season should not be watered down by having to actually beat good teams to be national champion.

Just as it is frustrating to come in here and see what some think passes off as a discussion of Georgia Bulldogs’ Sports in the UGA blog here.
Georgia was done dirty this last season.
It’s a beauty contest right now. Go undefeated in a conference of but 1 team, have no conference championship, beat no Top 25 team, and play for the NCAA BCS National Championship.
All this will end, just as soon as we all see that the answer lies with the Plus One +1. Any watering down of the Plus One +1 to an 8-team playoff will ruin fixing this.
The fix is that Ohio State NEVER gets to play in the NCAA BCS National Championship Game against the likes of Florida the year before or LSU last year - neither of which did they have any damn business of being in. Obviously.
Level the playing field.
Give more than just the Pac-10 and Big 10 one-team conferences an opportunity to be in fact the champion of this sport because we all know that the Big 10 and Pac-10 have but 1 team, that they purposely don’t want to have to play a conference championship, that they purposely don’t want to have to beat Top 25 teams, and that all they care about is preserving their precious won/loss record - saying that they are a BCS Conference and went undefeated.
Georgia played the Number 7 NCAA SoS last season in football and this up-coming season again. Same thing.

Bulldawg, I think I hit a nerve with you going after that tech fan, who was trashing one of our (not your) own.
It’s always struck me as odd that you have NEVER defended or agreed with any actual Dawg fan in here, in fact as consistantly combative with them. If they say Mark Richt is great, you point out how many losses he has. If they comment on a player, you point out who they should be talking about. And God forbid anyone takes another team to task, you’d be the first to point out thier accomplishment over UGA.
But you don’t seem to have any problem and never seem to address the many haters and rivals posting in here.
Interesting.
It’s also peculiar to me that your entire body of work consist of internet research. Not one mention of actually being at a game. Never a reference to Athens, or campus. (or a real life for that matter) EVER.
Odd.
You never comment on a particular game, make any prediction, or talk about the players or program, real time. No expression of joy over about a huge win. No comments about black jerseys or celebrations over the gators. Just statistics about the Pac-10.
Hmmm
I suppose it is possible that you could be the one Dawg fan in the world that takes the side of rivals, hates all other Dawg fans, has no personal reference to the school, never seems to talk about the actual game, and who’s “fandom” is based solely from the internet. Possible I guess.
