UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Dogs, Jackets, AJC converge on Tulsa

Greetings from Tulsa, Oklahoma. What am I doing here, you ask? I’m here to cover the NCAA Tennis Championships. I’m interested in hearing what y’all think about that.

There’s no question the AJC needs to be here chronicling this event. After all three teams from the two state universities we cover the most are represented here. The defending national champion men’s team from Georgia is here. The Bulldogs are seeded fourth this season but, by all accounts, have a reasonable chance to repeat as national champs. The Georgia women, who have won two of these things, are here as well. They’re seeded No. 2 so, obviously, they could win another title. Then there is the Georgia Tech women. The Yellow Jackets are defending national champions — they won the program’s first title at UGA last year — and also won the national indoors earlier this season. So obviously they are very good, too.

That said, we know college tennis doesn’t necessarily generate great interest and/or readership. But this is an example of how we don’t always base our coverage decisions on what people want to read most. We also have to consider the athletic achievements of the teams we cover on a regular basis.

So here I am in Tulsa, a place I’d never been to and never expected to visit. Please tell me somebody will be reading the copy I’ll be producing out here over the next week (something on the Tech-Georgia tennis rivalry coming a little later today). And I’ll offer another shout-out to Tulsadawg, one of the blog’s regular visitors, to tell me once again where I should be going and what I should be doing during my down time (which won’t be much).

Meanwhile, I’ll understand if the blog morphs into a discussion of Georgia’s strength and weaknesses on defense this season or more debate on the Dogs’ baseball program compared to Tech’s. They certainly put on a good show at The Ted last night.

I’ll be checking in regularly. Until then, so long from Tulsa!

UGA athletics owns Tech. Baseball, basketball and Football! Now lets add womens Tennis to the mix!

Go Dawgs!

Also Tech will be lucky to get a fieldgoal with Paul Johnson’s trick knee offense!

Chip, Looks like the rain is on its way, but by tomorrow afternoon, things should be improving. Picked up lunch at Queenie’s in Utica Square, and the women’s tennis team from Miami was there. Another good place, but get there early or late for lunch if you want to sit down.

And yes, you should be covering these events for the AJC. Not only because of the Georgia connections, but we’re talking about Division 1 National Championships.

Again, for Mexican at lunch, go to Las Americas on 3rd between Lewis and Utica. For Mexican at dinner, go to El Rio Verde just west of Utica and north of Admiral. The most popular pizza is at Hideaway’s on Cherry Street (11th Street between Utica and Peoria,) but I like Umberto’s on 21st, just west of Harvard. These places are within a couple of miles of TU.

For entertainment, try Cherry Street, Brookside, or downtown, and if you want the best dive in Tulsa, go to the Buck on Harvard, just south of 11th Street. You’ve also got to see a show at the Cain’s if you can, and stop at Soundpony either before or after.

One place I left out before is the Gilcrease Museum (just west of downtown.) If you have a free afternoon, you’ve got to see their collection of Western Art. And don’t forget a trip to a Lebanese Steakhouse. My pick is the Silver Flame at 61st and Sheridan.

Anyway, welcome to Tulsa, and if you need more info, I’ll check in here now and again. And GO DOGS!

Chip, Check out Casa Bonita in NE Tulsa. Great Mexican food, all you can eat. Tulsa’s a great town, really clean and cool people. Check out the zoo (I know, geekish) but it is one of the best in America. Drillers Stadium is a great place for minor-league ball. For more expensive food, try the Duck Club at the Doubletree Warren on South Yale. Take a drive down the remnants of Route 66. Drive down the Turnpike to Muscogee and tour the USS Batfish, a WWII submarine that is about as landlocked as you can get.

As far as tennis, keep us updated. It is one of the first sports in which Georgia became a dominant national force under Dan McGill. Used to love to read about them in the Banner Herald when I was a kid.

So, have fun and keep us posted!

Chip I like reading how all uga sports finish a season. Thanks for the update. On a football note, here’s a preseason top 10 take from a rivals writer (formerly sporting news writer).

  1. Georgia The Bulldogs felt they were stiffed on a trip to the BCS title game last season. They’ll find an invitation stuffed in their mailbox this season, thanks to a veteran defense and dynamic offense led by QB Matthew Stafford and RB Knowshon Moreno. Woof, woof.

Welcome Chip,

I have to agree with almost all tulsadawg/Georgia87 has to say. I personally am not a huge fan of western art, but if you are, don’t miss Gilcrease. I think Casa Bonita is closed? Also, a friend told me the Zoo was in disrepair after some of the storms we’ve had this past year.

Las Americus and Umbertos are excellent, inexpensive, and mom & pop style. Umberto’s = a slice and garlic knots for less than %5. Mid-range price check out Bros. Houligan (15th Str between Harvard and Lewis or 61st and Mingo). Caz’s in the Brady District has similar menu. Hideaway Pixxa is good and it was a college town start-up at OSU in Stillwater. The Spudder for a good local Steak. For touristy type stuff my favorites are the Gun Museum in Claremore…huge, and the Tall Grass Prairie in Pawhuska. Tall grass prairie is a heard of several hundred buffalo on an open plain. It’s about an hour north of Tulsa. The Buck is a cool little dive, I go once a week or so. You should also drive through the ORU campus…it’s trippy. Lastly as you are a journalist you may like Gardners Bookstore at 43rd and Mingo. It’s a huge used bookstore.

I hope you enjoy your time in Tulsa. The stories on championship tournies that the Dawgs are competing in sre very appropriate.

Chip,

As a Tech fan it is good to see that you will be following them in Tulsa along with the other team :-) Can’t wait to hear your updates on how all the “Georgia” teams are doing. It would be nice to have both of the championships in the state again. Thanks for the coverage.

Oh yeah tulsadawg is right, you should definitly go to a Lebanese Steakhouse. Jamil’s on 51st between harvard and lewis is old and has had many famous guests and the silver flame is good too.

Chip! Don’t let your stay in Tulsa pass without checking out the giant praying hands at Oral Roberts University. They’re freaky.

And of course, the hometown paper should have you out there covering the championship tournament. Tennis is a great sport. Those athletes and their endurance (both physical and mental) are amazing.

The Silver Flameis ok, bu if you want a better steak and the same Lebonese food….go to Jamil’s Steakhouse…its a Tulsa tradition! They are tearing down the origional so get it while you can.

On another note, would any dog fans here in Tulsa want to start a Bulldog Club where UGA fans can get together and watch the football games this season? I’m from GA but live in Tulsa and do not know many UGA fans. I’ll check back later to see if there is any interest!

OK, here’s a somewhat humorous update: I asked for all this sage advice about where to go and what to do. But I left my hotel to go find the tennis venue (more on that later) and get my credentials, etc., before I had time to actually heed it… . Anyway, after checking out the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, I asked the media relations dude there where to go to grab a bite. He directed me to a restaurant district district off of Utica Street. I thought I followed his directions to the letter but ended up in a very nice neighborhood of million-dollar homes. I couldn’t help but think Tubby Smith must have lived out there somewhere. So I ended up just heading back in the direction of my hotel (Courtyard Marriott) and settled on a Ruby Tuesday’s nearby. In three words: not very good… .

The moral of the story is this — I will closely follow the advice dispensed herein from now on and will report back with reviews… .

As for the venue, Tulsa’s new tennis center here, circa 2001, is very impressive. I especially like the indoor facility, in which you can view all six courts, three on each side, from a mezzanine level complete with bleachers… . The outdoor facility is very nice and pretty spectator friendly. But, once again, a college school has failed to reproduce the most important thing than Dan Magill Tennis Complex offers back in Athens, a venue in which all six stadium courts can be viewed at once. There are only four in the center court area here, separated two to a side by a grandstands area. The other courts are wrapped in octagon shaped fences around the periphery. Great courts and perfect for play but not the greatest for spectator tennis… .

OK, so it’ll be a lunch and a late dinner out tomorrow after all the tennis so help me decide on the best destinations. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

C-ya!

Great idea by the AJC to cover the NCAA’s. As the tournament progresses, give us an idea of how the crowds compare to the tournaments hosted at the Dan McGill complex.

There has to be one in every crowd. Chip, ignore the jerks and keep Us posted on how all three of OUR teams are doing. Three of My home town boys should be going to Omaha this year and I hope all three do well. The Posey brothers at FSU and Thomas Nichols at Tech are products of the great baseball program here in Lee County. Lee County is baseball crazy and the kids have the best in coaching and equipment from tee ball to High School. Buster Posey is expected to be the overall first round pick in the MLB draft this summer. His younger Brother Jack and Nichols at Tech were teamates at LCHC last year. I hope the Dawgs win it all, but I will root for these three guys too.

GT will topple UGA from here on out —in pretty much every sport that the two play. UGA is setting up for a tremendous fall —just wait until after the middle of September after SC and ASU hang back-to-back L’s on the dawgies. I’ll be in Tempe to see the latter.

Dawgie nation will be screaming for St. Richt’s head —particularly after GT puts a whippin’ on the dawgs in November. Remember, Chan is gone, Ball is gone —the two persons responsible for the last three UGA wins over Tech. I have seen the future and the future is quite nice.

Glad you are covering the NCAA’s. I watched the tourney last year via computer. Go Dawgs!

By Mike

Mr. Towers:

This Tech fan is glad that the AJC is providing coverage. UGa has a proud tradition in tennis, and Tech has now built one to match theirs in women’s tennis. I hope they meet in the Finals (and that Tech wins, of course).

That game at the Ted was a great college baseball game. Congrats to the Dawgs for finally showing us why they won the SEC this year. I am glad my Jackets won the season series from the Dawgs by winning earlier in Athens and at Tech, but UGa played some great baseball Tuesday night (actually, I thought both teams did). That Joshua Fields is something special out of the pen. And that catch in the outfield, my goodness! I hope both baseball teams meet again in Omaha.

Finally, despite the football streak, UGa does not won Tech in sports, just in football. Our softball team swept yours this spring, our baseball team won the season series, the men’s basketball series are pretty much won home and home, our women’s basketball is improving and beat you 2 years ago (I think it was 2 years ago)although you usually dominate there, our volleyball team usually dominates yours and we both have nationally ranked golf teams. Sounds pretty even to me outside the gridiron, and we’ll see how well you play PJ’s offense on the field. Talking about it beforehand is meaningless.

By Joe

May 15, 2008 8:16 AM | Link to this

If the AJC had any sense, you would marginally cover these events all year long so that readers would be aware of it.

Then, when you show up in Tulsa people are not wondering how an entire season just started today.

Just another example of shoddy journalism from our one paper town.

Chip, thanks for the tennis coverage. I wish the AJC did more collegiate tennis coverage. For those who have never watched the NCAA’s at the Dan McGill complex in Athens, you should definitely go even if you’re not a tennis fan. Best collegiate tennis facility in the country by far. It’s a U.S. Open night match type atmosphere when the UGA men are playing.

Chip, Stop apologizing for covering something other than football. Everybody in the state with an IQ larger than an interstate (pick one), is interested in how UGA as a school is doing. Anybody that has ever attended a gymnastics meet, a baseball game or a tennis match at UGA knows what I’m talking about. Hell, half the football team is there usually supporting their classmates. If we send somebody to nationals in noodle-tossing I want to hear about it. WIth no apologies.

Don’t know why web folks haven’t posted my tech-georgia women’s tennis story on the uga page but I’ve taken the liberty of providing the link here for those of you that don’t have other access to it. OK, to some of you comments:

Joe: we do cover tennis all year long. We report the results of all their matches all year long, usually in the “Briefly” or “Etc.” sections. Not usually found on website, however… .

GTguy, you’ve got to be kidding. You really take that phraseology as a slight to Georgia Tech? Incredible… .

dawgtennisfan, yes, there will be matches going on simultaneously all week. Lot of tennis to get in in a week, then individuals begin… .

Again, thanks for all the suggestions on where to go and what to do. I’ll offer some reviews later… .

Thanks, for the coverage. Men are finally healthy and should be a factor. The women, should also be a factor. Dancevic, who is from Canada, has a brother who plays professionally. Is Dancevic originally from Crotia?

College tennis teams throughout the country, have and inordinate amount of international players, some with as many as 1/2 or more. Are schools granted additional benefits for recruiting foreign players or is American tennis declining that badly? Troy University’s women’s team is primarily Eastern European/Russian. There is no doubt that the quality of baseball here stems from the commitment Lee County has made to the little league programs. UPDATE FROM TULSA

Not looking too good for the Lady Dogs. They dropped the doubles point to Arkansas, a team they split with during the season. Losing the doubles point is not unusual for them this season but Georgia pulled off an upset at No. 1 doubles and was up 6-4 at No. 2 before blowing it at end… . They’re now a little ways into singles and the Dogs were down a break at every position except No. 6. Could be a short stay in Tulsa if they don’t get it going soon.
