UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

ASU’s Erickson: Spring games ‘overrated’

So, back to football for a moment. Don’t know how much web surfing you guys do but I noticed late yesterday a report on Arizona State - Georgia’s fourth opponent next season - which just completed its spring game this past weekend.

In general, the word was that the Sun Devils’ offense did not look good at all. Rudy Carpenter, their senior quarterback, struggled. He completed just seven of 21 passes for 88 yards and most of those yard came on one 43-yard touchdown pass. According to reports, the No. 1 offense did not convert a first down until about four minutes were left in the second 12-minute quarter.

There was some concern on the message boards out there. But coach Dennis Erickson, for one, wasn’t.

“People overrate a spring game,” Erickson told local reporters after the game. “I overrate it. Obviously Rudy wasn’t on today as much as he could have been, but he’s had a great spring. He’s our quarterback and he’s made so much improvement with his delivery and all the different things he’s doing.”

Defensively, linebacker Gerald Munns had 11 tackles and linebacker Mike Nixon intercepted Carpenter once. The White vs. Maroon intrasquad game, attended by about 3,000, ended in a 17-17 tie.

In other football news, Macon’s Josh Kendall had a good story about how coach Mark Richt is returning to Honduras for another mission trip and this time he’s taking about 20 of his players with him.

“They will freak out when they see how big these guys are,” Richt told Kendall. “When they see these guys, their jaws will drop … and then they’ll thump us in soccer.”

Richt and his family went to Honduras for the first time last year as part of a Baptist mission. UGA has verified the trip to be within NCAA rules, according to the story.

Thanks for all the thoughtful responses to yesterday’s blog about UGA’s third equestrian national championship. I’m going to the men’s basketball postseason awards banquet tonight and will file a report tomorrow. The baseball team plays Kennesaw State tonight. The Dogs lost the last time they played.

In the meantime, feel free to suggest future topics. I’ll be checking in often.

Changing subjects. If Pollack’s NFL career is really over, Coach Richt would be smart to look to add him to the Dawgs coaching staff. he’s a born leader and motivator and will succeed in whatever he does in life.

I second the motion Rabid. Any discussion?

Sure spring games are overrated. Glorified scrimmages that probably are better at providing the players and coaches actual game day planning around logistics than a game day atmosphere on the field. But I like the way UGA, and Richt lately, handles spring games…more of a celebration of a hard-working spring, rather than a viewpoint of showing the world how good your team will be. Richt & Co, and many other schools, played many walk-ons and 3rd/4th stringers which is very nice for those players and their families, and also let the regulars get a few last licks in on each other. But as a game, they stink. Kind of like spring training for baseball, you look for consitency and improvement in the spring, and hope any injuries are minor.

By the way, I have my tickets booked for the ASU game! I know a ton of Dawg fans will be going, but I hope we all go with a good attitude and show some respect to a great college town.

I agree with Rabid. Hire Pollack in some defensive coaching capacity. What a true role model for the young pups.

Just make sure that Pollock does not do any head butts on the players. He might hurt them.

The B’ham News’ sports editorial columnist gave the Richt trip to Honduras very favorable treatment on the front of the Sunday sports page. For those over there who can read, I think they got a real appreciation for why we are glad to have CMR. Further, for those a-holes who keep bashing us for so-called thuggery (underage drinking, wrong-way scooters) and claiming CMR is hypocritical, this story would be wasted.

Also in that section was a very large write-up on Title IX, naming those who have had the most impact on women’s sports. Not surprisingly, the SEC dominated. Coach Summitt at UT was #1, UA gym coach Sarah Patterson was #2, although her achievements are greatly overshadowed by #3 Suzanne Yoculan (minor breach of objectivity by an AL paper). Andy Landers was #10.

And, finally, in the humor category, the weekly AU/UA back-and-forth bashing continues to put the UGA/Tech bashing to shame in terms of delusions of grandeur.

Oh, yeah. Get Pollack back to Athens. He can manage his RV tailgate park in his spare time.

By Left to Right

Is there any evidence Pollack can coach? The skills necessary to be a great player are not always the same as the skills necessary to be a great coach. There have been many, many great players who were poor coaches.

Plus, college teams are only allowed so many coaches on staff by the NCAA. Which of UGA’s current defensive coaches do y’all propose getting rid of to make room for Pollack?

By P Dawg

April 22, 2008 3:42 PM | Link to this

It would be great to see Pollack on the sidelines in Athens! I’m proud of him for having the common sense to give up more money to stay healthy for his wife and children and everyone else in the Bulldog Nation who would be devastated if he had permanent paralization for trying again.

Erickson might as well play this off. Even if they came out of the scrimmage looking great, the fact is they won’t when they play UGA. They haven’t seen speed and size like this!

Another fine example of why we are so fortunate to have CMR here. Most coaches are sitting on an island somewhere sipping pina collatas after their spring games and look at where this great man is. It’s not all about x’s and o’s folks. Richt proves it!

Future topic suggestion:

(I know this is thinking ahead, but it’s an interesting question:)

Which UGA football team do you think should be better… 2008 or 2009?

Despite all the hype for 2008… as I see it, if KM and MS stick around for another year, there’s no reason to think 2009 won’t actually be the better squad (with an easier schedule, too.) A more veteran o-line and a proven kicker (hopefully) will be the key factors in this, and I don’t see us losing that many pieces at the end of the 08 season (assuming a few key guys hang around.) Am I missing something?

By Cuz

Arizona State does not concern me. Playing LSU and UF back to back does.

By mcdawg

April 22, 2008 3:55 PM | Link to this

Erickson is correct but you need to feed the beast-that is a game i hope not to overlook-it will be about 105 on the field at kickoff so heat will be a factor (don’t give me any nonsense about dry heat-its hot)-not to discourage anyone from traveling already have great seats through ASU

April 22, 2008 4:21 PM | Link to this

Here’s another wrinkle on ASU… you can’t tailgate until 3 1/2 hours before gametime. If it’s not in the South, it’s not tailgating. And on top of the fact that ASU only had 3,000 people at it’s spring game, it tells me they aren’t that serious about football. Characterizes the PAC-10 pretty well for me.

Dog 44,

I’ve been preaching the same thing. I do like our chances this year, but we should be just as dangerous, more experienced and who knows even more hungry in 09. All in all we could be in for some of the best years we have experienced in a long time. As for ASU football, if their O-line is anywhere as bad as they were a year ago, most Dawg fans will be partying in Oldtown Scottsdale by the 4th quarter due to a**whipping we will lay down on the sun devils. Should be a fun trip.

I remember last year after Okie States spring game and what they accomplished, there were more Cowboys on this blog talking about how they were going to take the Dawgs to the woodshed and give them an old fashioned Oklahoma butt whipping. History proved them wrong. You cannot predict a season on a Spring game, end of story.

most likely the asu game will be a night game. both u of a (arizona) and asu play night games at home most of the year cause of the heat. i live out here in arizona, and have for the better part of last 20 years, and at night it most likely will still be very warm but more tolerable. start hydrating NOW!!

out here, i can tell y’all, college football does not mean/count as much as it does back in the sec. i do hope uga does prepare very well for the environment/game. i would love to see my dogs (finally) take it to asu. GO DAWGS!!!

Left to right… you are correct on some level. How do we know if the guy can coach? But look at his backround. Nothing put pluses. There are some players that could not coach a lick; Pepper Rogers, Vedie Himsl, Elvin Tappe, Eddie Haas, Bobby Petrino,Ted Williams, Bob Lemon this list could go on forever. I for one would give Pollack every chance to prove his worth. I think he could make his mark as a very good football coach.

The thought of 09’ has already crossed my mind a few times as well. It would be much more satisfying going undefeated with this years schedule, but we’ll take em’ all. UF had a similar SEC schedule when they won it with one loss a couple of years ago and they were saying that it wasn’t supposed to happen until the next year but they had a much worse season the next year. Sounds like they might not be as well off with CUM’s recruits and schemes. Anyway, if UGA does get it done in 08’, look for Stafford to go on to the NFL. But don’t cringe too much about that thought. As good and well thought of as he is, we won’t be hurting for replacements at any position for a LOOOONG time! (unless CMR takes a pro job((now cringe!!)) which I don’t see happening). GO DAWGS!!!

Don’t put too much stock in ASU’s spring game. Old Dennis knows His way around a practice field, He will have His guys ready to play. I am glad CMR is taking players to Honduras. Teenagers and twentysomethings tend to be extremely egocentric, it will do Them good to see some real third world poverty up close.

David Pollack would be a great addition to the UGA staff. What a class act. I was truly crushed when he injured himself in ‘06. He had such a bright career ahead of him. I hate to see that happen to any player, regardless of the colors he wears on Saturdays.

April 22, 2008 10:33 PM | Link to this

I’m really glad the players will be going on the mission trip with coach Richt. In fact, I wish more coaches worked to have their players involved in charities. The results are beneficial to everyone involved, and it puts the games they play into proper perspective.

With that in mind, I’d like to see some stories on former Dawgs and the community service activities they do in their communities, or what they’re doing with their careers. It doesn’t have to be just football players, but other former athletes.

For example, former tennis star Brent Crimes is an optimologist in Athens. Robert “Happy” Dicks is a neurosurgeon.

With all the crime related stories involving athletes, a series like that would be a breath of fresh air.

I ain’t worry about ASU at all. We’ll run all over their D. I seriously don’t think they can stop our running game. Stafford will dissect it and audible to whatever he wants.

Rudy Carpenter will be on his back counting stars. He’ll experienced what Colt Brennan experienced in New Orleans. We’re too deep upfront.

Pollack can make a good coach. He definitely has the football smarts and be a good motivator. The only thing that I think he might need to be real good at, is learn how to be a teacher first. IMO, you need to know how to illustrate schemes to get a point(s) across to the players. He would make a good coach and he’ll be a heck of a recruiter too.

I am bringing a Bama fan with me and I want him to see the best Athens has to offer…not so much the most expensive places…just the places with the best atmosphere..thanks for any help on this..email me if you like…tvradioguy@yahoo.com. Loosa, just park downtown and walk around. There are so many places to eat that are not expensive that I cannot name them all. Of course one reason I cannot name them is that I was not seeing to well at the time, but I was not driving. Plenty of good eating joints across from the old part of the University, old Franklin college. The reason for the wrought iron fence was to keep cows out in the late 1700’s. Only way to get close to a cow is buy a burger at the Grill. Good burger joint if it is still there.

I would love to see Pollack back in Athens in some capacity, either in coaching or support services—Maybe in the AD office. Assuming he has his degree. But, I see him more in a broadcasting role. He is already doing some stuff for Fox (I think Fox). He would also be ideal for Loran’s job on the sideline.

Chip:

What about the Banner Herald Sports Dept. covering the SE Lacrosse Conference CHAMPION UGA Men’s LACORSSE CLUB? UGA just won the SELC Crown (for the 2nd straight year), with a thrilling 17-16 win over Va Tech at the tourney over in north Atlanta. Have you or any of the Banner Herald Sports folks ever seen a Lacrosse game? UGA Lax will be invited to play in the College Lax Club National “sweet 16” out in Dallas, TX. in mid-May.

Go to CollegeLAX.us for the details. Our UGA kids are a great Lacrosse team, yet they get virtually NO coverage in their own hometown Sports page. UGA Coach Jason Slider has done a great job with our team. With a little news coverage, maybe the UGA Athletic Dept would support our Lacrosse program more (hint-hint).

I’d like to see the Athletic Department and/or the University attempt to make contact with alumni out west to encourage them to attend the ASU game. UGA never travels out West and something as simple as a postcard sent to alumni in AZ, NV, CA, CO, TX, etc. announcing the game date with hints on how to obtain tickets could pay big dividends. It is reasonable to assume that getting alumni to attend the game might provide a spike in donations to UGA as old interests are reignited.

Sobedawg, watch out for Hebron, from what I understand He had a great spring, but got no props from the coaching staff. Methinks He is still in Richt’s dawghouse for getting suspended last year. Hebron is possibly Our fastest lb and Has something to prove. Loosa, I second Cuz’s recomendation. Try to get a room at the Holiday Inn on Broad. You will be within walking distance, or a short cab ride, of any place You would want to go. Do not drink and drive in Athens! Do not drink on the street or in a parking lot! While in Athens take a tour of the campus. You will not find a more beautiful campus anywhere, and the Co-Eds will be wearing their spring dreses!

He has been laying around the apartment in His undewear drinking for, like, WEEKS! I am saving up money from My job to get My own place, I mean, seeing you dad in His underwear is SOOO GROSS! Anyway, I don’t know much about football because it is dumb, but here goes. My Dad says that UGA has some good tight ends, which is cool, because the community college where I go is full of fat little dweebs, not a tight butt anywhere! What does geaux tigers mean, were You trying to say go? Don’t they teach like spelling and english and stuff where You live? I have read some of this stuff so I know what ASU means, Arizona State, right? I think that must be in like, Arizona, or someplace. I know why everybody is freaking out, ROAD TRIP!

Geaux Tigers, who’s your QB? Perrillwhoux? Nice leader you got there. If he does it again and Leslie still don’t suspend him, IMO, your team will be divided… b/c he gets special treatment. I wished we could’ve played y’all in the SECCG, we would’ve ran all over your fur tail. It’ll be a close game, but I like our chance better. Perrillwhoux will be running for his life.

Serious question though, why do y’all wear white jersey at home?… just curious.

SamoanDawg (Dog?), don’t worry about our QB because we are absolutely knee deep in them. The same goes for the rest of the LSU football team positions. We will not be divided as you flea-bitten hounds will see IF you have the fortitude to come and see us this fall. Perhaps your coach, ‘Mary’ Limp-Richts, will just forfeit the game and do the SEC a huge favor. You have no chance and we will take you UGA mix-breeds behind the woodshed to show you some serious whup-ace! The game will not even be close, mutt lover. LSU will repeat as SEC Champions and you know it.

White jerseys at home? That’s easy to answer, dawg boy. Have you ever watched a thunderstorm? Stay with me now…..concentrate….have you ever watched the lightning in the sky? OK, still with me? Good. Now what color would you call that lightning, dawg boy? I rest my case. We are as fast as lightning and nothing will stand between LSU and another NC - not UGA, not UF, not ‘Bama, NOTHING. Put that in your ‘dawg’ pipe and smoke on it.

Geaux Tigers, you’re pretty cocky aren’t ya little tigger. ummm.. didn’t we knocked out your Qb, Russell, in the last SECCG? yeah, it’ll be the same scenario. Perrillwhoux will not last after the 1st qtr, if he’s still with the team. I don’t think he can handle the pressure, he will have a mental break down. Can he managed the whole game by himself? probably not… better have your backup ready… better yet, it dudn’t matter who your QB will be, they will go down like a sack of potatoes!

btw, put down that bottle of white lightening… actually give it to Perrillwhoux, he’s thirsty.

I think we win in Baton Rouge because our defense cannot be stopped by their O-line. I think Stafford and Moreno score enough points to win the game. With the added playing last years National Champs, the motivation is there.

I for one was pulling for LSU to stomp Ohio State in the NC game. I had no sour grapes that we were not there. If we had won either the UT game or the USC East game, we would have something to say about it because we would have been in the SECC. We did not, we got what we got.

LSU, I have a lot of respect for your program and your tradition. I am making predictions based on last years team. This years team as yours, has not played a game yet. My fear is that we put so much emotion into winning at the Red Stick stadium we may be out of gas by the time we make the rumble by the river the following week.
