Herschel opens up in new book

So I’m assuming most of you saw Nightline’s interview of Herschel Walker last night on ABC. If not, some video excerpts and a couple of stories are available on ABC.com. I watched every minute and found it to be quite revealing.

Some of you have probably heard me talk about it before but to me Herschel has always been one of the most mysterious athletes I’ve ever encountered. I mentioned when I first wrote about his book back in January that he’s extremely insulated and that you’d sooner get the Pope on the phone than you could him. In fact, I was unable to reach him when I wrote that first story on his book. And I KNOW the guy. Carter Strickland subsequently caught up with him about a month ago up in Washington D.C. but, even then, it was difficult as difficult as ever to gauge Herschel’s true feelings.

Anyway, kudos to ABC for getting him to sit still and answer all their questions. That’s the most I’ve ever heard his now ex-wife Cindy talk about things. Of course, it helps when the goal is to promote something, which Herschel and Simon & Schuster are doing with his new book, “Breaking Free.” But I thought both Herschel and his wife came off quite sincere and truthful.

The part I thought most interesting, selfishly, was ABC flashing up and reading out some of the quotes Herschel’s former coaches and teammates said to me when I first wrote about the book. In particular, Vince Dooley sort of tongue-in-cheek said he liked “whatever personality Herschel had when he was carrying the football.” To that, Herschel said Monday night he guessed Dooley didn’t care much about the other sides of Herschel. But then Herschel qualified that by saying his coaches and teammates had no way of knowing how he was feeling deep down inside. And it sounds like Herschel and Cindy encountered the same problems many of us “regular people” do with relationships and life’s stresses.

Just goes to show that, no matter what anyone has accomplished and how high a pedestal we place them on, we all have our similar problems and trials and tribulations. Herschel seemed completely contrite and sincere in his goal of going public with his struggles in the hopes of helping those who may be encountering similar ones. Herschel is such a hero to so many in the Bulldog Nation and I’m sure it was somewhat upsetting and at the least a little awkward to see him in such a vulnerable state. But, as it turns out, he has been scared and uncertain just as the rest of are facing the challenges that life presents us. And he certainly believes that Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a real malady.

Anyway, no sense in me rehashing the whole interview over again. Most of you saw it. Those of you that did, let’s hear your thoughts on it. Any reason to believe Herschel is the victim of misdirected counseling or do you think he suffers from a true clinical psychological condition? Do you think Herschel is just searching for a way to justify some bad behavior or is he a true victim of circumstances? Do you think it made UGA look bad in any way? Much ado about nothing? What did you think?

Ultimately I guess we all need to read the book to form an informed opinion. He’ll be in Athens at the UGA bookstore Friday from 12:30-2:30 p.m. and in Atlanta at the Carter Center Friday night at 7 p.m.

Herschel was idolized as a hero to an entire state from the age of 18-20, then became a rich and famous pro athlete from age 21 until his early thirties. Now, he’s a washed-up has-been (Not my feelings, I love the guy - but he’s not relevant in the same way anymore).

I suspect that Herschel and many other athletes go through the same type of psychic trauma many former child acting stars go through when they age and aren’t relevant to anyone anymore. It’s sad. I wish him the best.

HW sounds like Tom Cruise discussing Scientology.

Given that a large majority of psychiatrists don’t recognize DID, it is most likely HW suffered from bouts of depression caused by the stress of his celebrity. Unfortunately, he has been convinced that the the garden-variety mental ailment he suffered from was in fact a rare and exotic condition worthy of a book and major press tour.

I agree with Coach Dooley liking “whatever personality Herschel had when he was carrying the football.”

Who cares if he puts a gun to his wife head, went to any classes, and was given free Trans Am’s at UGA? He won us our one and only National Championship only 28 years ago.

All Herschel needed was a little tender loving spooning from Buck. To bad the QB’s can’t spoon the running backs. It’s written in the Bylaws by the late great Wallace Butts.

Our spooning must be amended!!!

HW sounds like Tom Cruise discussing Scientology.

(Well, it’s really no different than a well-known alcoholic celeb/athlete who realizes he has a problem, goes through rehab, and then discusses the whole situation through a book or on a TV show. Whether Herschel truly has DID or not, his life seems to be better now because he’s making the proper decisions in his life to deal with things. In the end, that’s all that matters.)

It’s great to see Walker fans turn their back on him because he’s “No longer relevant anymore”. Apparently he is only good for one thing, carrying a football. A shameful commentary.

UGA Equestrian will be competing in the National Championships in Waco, TX April 17 - 19. Location is the Heart O’ Texas Fair Complex — Website. UGA has some top-ranked competitors. For all of us in Texas, this is a great chance to see a Georgia team compete. If you have kids, so much the better.

I have no doubt Herschel wants to help people. I have no doubt He has problems. I have many doubts about His Therapist and His course of treatment If I am not mistaken some of these same “Drs” were responsable for the “repressed memory” fad of a few years ago. I have no problem with some rich patient finding Their “inner child” if it makes Them feel better. What I do not like is the fact that many innocent people were accused of molesting Their own children. Patients were placed under hypnosis and “memories” were dredged up by Their quack Drs. Families and reputations were destroyed by charges of child abuse that were later proven to be false. Evidently Herschel had shown no signs of this disorder before His Dr discovered it. Did the good Dr find Herschel’s problem, or plant it? I think Herschel and his Dr are worrying about a condition that doesn’t exist, while whatever mental illness He may have is not being treated.

As one who suffers from a mental disorder, if you read my posts sometimes you can tell. I poke fun at my disorder and I am sure Herschel has had more than his share of making jokes at his own expense. This is called coping. As long as I maintain my medication, I am fine. Probably the same with Herschel. I knew Herschel at UGA, I knew he was very self conscious about himself and he had a hard time accepting that he was this media superstar. He ignored the spotlight and would rather spend time talking to other small town students than the media. He did not like the media dance, he did it, he did not like it. He is a great guy, one of the best persons I ever got to know, aquaitance wise, in Athens.

With respect to the Lars Tate refernces, so far as I know Lars is doing well and has a son (Donavon) who is a highly rated football recruit next year. I believe it was former RB Tim Worley who got in a bit of trouble with the police recently. Of course, until one of our players punches a woman in a pizza parlor, I won’t take criticism about player conduct from Tech fans like Ramble On very seriously.

With respect to Herschel, he had much to lose and nothing to gain by coming forward with this issue. I take him at his word that he wants to help others who may be experiencing the same things. The easy thing to do would be to stay silent.

I do hope that Coach Dooley called Herschel and clarified his remark as I found it very insensitive the first time I read it and I am sure that was not Coach’s intent.

As far as these revelations harming UGA, all I can say is that Herschel would have to do a whole lot more than write this book to undo all he has given to the program. Herschel has been and will always be the yardstick by which UGA players, and college football running backs in general, will be measured. Herschel was and is unusual and unique in many ways. One of the things that seperates him is being the single greatest college running back of all-time.

I’ll admit that I was suspicious until I saw the Nightline interview with Mr. Walker and his ex-wife. It’s difficult to fake that kind of sincerity. Whether or you not you believe DID is a real mental illness or not, there was indeed something wrong with him whether it was PTSD or bipolar disorder. It’s not normal to play Russian roulette or hold a gun to your wife. The man had a problem, dealt with it, and he was brave enough to come forward. Anyone who makes light of that is truly sick.

Folks: We’re all a little crazy. Sorry to disappoint those of you who think you are perfect or close to it. Even the “clinical” psychologist who think this disorder doesn’t exist. Maybe it doesn’t exist because the behavior can be found in each one of us. It’s the degree to which it can be found that should be considered. Obviously, Hershel believes he was affected by it more. It could have been caused by celebrity exposure, pressure, stress.

Or maybe, just maybe, he is more normal than he thinks and we are less normal than we think!

I always wondered why he was so hard to tackle in college and so easy in the pros. I reckon Donald’s money bought him some pills and he was cured.

The guy was a monster in High School and college … and all them people in that head …. OJ one day, Marcus the next, Jim Brown most of the time.

Wanting to be a FBI, a GI JOE, talking in third person all the time. Hershel this, Hershel run fast, well now we know why, there was 10 or 12 of him at all times. Or was they?

One of them got a new car the as soon as he got the UGA and he was as poor as dirt. Well at least a “few” of “Hershel’s” did.

Now the experts say all of this is a crock of bull. I tend to believe them. Since Ole Hershel lives in Texas now maybe he needs to visit Dr. Phil and see what he thinks.

I loved to watch one of them # 34’s run … now I wish I knew which one it was …. Maybe Buck knows the real truth … the QB is the brain of the team ….

Is this the UGA Beat Blog where we are supposed to come in here today and discuss College Football and how The SEC is so much BETTER than the stinking Big 10 and stinking Pac-10 ?

I do not know what the man love this blog owner has for Southern California’s Schedules, last year and this up-coming year as he has stated repeatedly herein, with this type of analysis once again of non-conference games and games against The Bowl Subdivision he still refers to as 1-A and the Championship Division he still refers to as 1-AA.

A schedule is not one analyzed in this fashion.

A schedule is a schedule. It includes the lack of a “Conference” Championship Games for obvious reasons that they prefer to not have to play a 2nd game at the end of the season – like UGA will face playing LSU twice this season pundits say – and, it includes the conference games front and center. If a Conference has 5 teams in the Final AP Poll Top 15 teams as The SEC did again last season – including Number 1 and Number 2 LSU and Georgia, Number 12 Tennessee, Number 13 Auburn and dragging up the rear Number 15 Florida, then the discussion must be of the Conference as well, right ? Nothing discussed here of that, again.

By ............................................BuLLdawg

April 16, 2008 4:40 AM | Link to this

A BLOG OWNER, SENATOR BLUTO PUTS FORTH THE POINT REPEATEDLY ON HIS BLOG, THAT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’S SCHEDULE WILL KEEP UGA OUT OF THE PICTURE BECAUSE WE PLAY A 1-AA TEAM AND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DOES NOT.

Southern California, by direct comparison, has no 2nd match-up at the end of the season against the 2nd best team in their stinking conference.

Southern California also does not find one opponent in the Pac-10 last season who was ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 15. Not one.

6 Top 15 SEC Final AP Poll and 1 Top 15 Pac-10 Final AP Poll. Or, any other poll for that matter.

So, this blog owner looks at the Schedules of say UGA and he states at UGA this up-coming season, we play a 1-AA team, never mind they beat Appalachian State right after Appalachian State beat Michigan. He states Southern California does not play a 1-AA team. Further, he says this will play against UGA – and, if anyone thinks it will not, we are all wrong.

That that is all there is to a “schedule.”

Really ?

Then, let’s look at the Southern California schedule he states is just as tough as UGA’s Number 7 toughest schedule in the country last season. Shall we ?

1-11 Idaho with the Number 87 Total Offense and Number 95 Scoring Offense. 5-7 Nebraska with the Number 112 Total Defense and Number 114 Scoring Defense. 5-7 Wash State with Number 73 Scoring Offense, 85 Total Defense, 97 Scoring Defense. 4-9 Washington Number 60 Total Offense and Number 103 Total Defense. 4-8 Stanford with Number 105 Scoring Offense 107 Total Offense, No. 98 Total Defense. 5-7 Arizona with Number 56 Scoring Offense and Number 59 Scoring Defense. 3-9 Notre Dame with Number 116 Scoring Offense and Number 72 Scoring Defense. 9-4 Oregon, lost to USC by 1 TD. Beat 1 ranked team lost to 4 unranked teams. 9-4 Oregon St No. 58 Scoring offense No. 33 Scoring Defense beat 0 ranked teams. 7-6 California Number 50 Offense Number 58 Defense, played 3 ranked teams lost 6. 10-3 Arizona St 56 Total offense 30 Total Defense 2 ranked team lost 3 games bad SOS 6-7 UCLA Number 99 Total Offense and Number 29 Total Defense, sucks. 9-4 Illinois Number 58 Total offense Number 55 Total Defense, lost 4 games.

Southern California played 1 good opponent last season, Arizona State who played themselves the Number 49 Official NCAA SOS. At least the Number 49 Strength of Schedule is in the top 50. By 1. That’s a lot better than Southern California’s SOS Number 73.

http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/Internet/toughest%20schedule/ia9gamescumm.pdf

This blog owner, Senator Bluto says that instead this schedule by Southern California was BETTER than UGA’s SOS and that the NCAA uses some crazy method he says to determine what is a great Schedule, like UGA’s Number 7 toughest in the nation last season, and this up-coming season once again – the same.

THAT IS A SORRY STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PLAYED LAST SEASON. SORRY.

Insert here, some further discussion of how it is not Southern California’s fault that Nebraska and Notre Dame were a combined 8-16.

Insert here, some “analysis” that 8 of the 13 Southern California games last season were against teams with a losing record.

5 games against a team without a LOSING RECORD. Jeez. Louise.

In keeping with his 1-A and 1-AA, now BCS are the Big 6 ?

Southern California, you see, plays all “BCS” Opponents.

BS.

Idaho is not a BCS Opponent.

Nebraska has not been a long long long time.

Notre Dame hasn’t been in 20 years.

Washington State, Stanford, California, UCLA, Illinois – none of these teams have been a BCS team for so long no one remembers if they ever did well in football.

All we remember is that the PAC-10 has 1 team.

By ............................................BuLLdawg

April 16, 2008 4:59 AM | Link to this

Always has had but 1 team.

And, the “2nd-best PAC-10 team” Southern California doesn’t want to have to play a 2nd time like UGA will have to this up-coming season against LSU twice – or, so they say.

The point is there are a lot of other teams – IN OUR DAMN CONFERENCE – that figure to put UGA to the test this up-coming season, as they do EVERY YEAR : LSU, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Auburn. Alabama is certainly expecting to start making noise again this up-coming season too, or the year after this. South Carolina and Kentucky would kick the crap out of the PAC-10.

So, who in the hell does Southern California play this season ? 1 game again, like last season ?

Virginia was NOT a Final AP Poll Top 25 team, not with NCAA SOS Number 74.

Ohio State beat 1 ranked team all season long, Wisconsin, who in turn beat NO Ranked team all season long. Wisconsin plays the NCAA SOS Number 50. Wisconsin does this every year.

By ............................................BuLLdawg

9-4 Oregon St No. 58 Scoring offense No. 33 Scoring Defense beat 0 ranked teams.

9-4 Oregon, lost to USC by 1 TD. Beat 1 ranked team lost to 4 unranked teams.

10-3 Arizona St 56 Total offense 30 Total Defense 2 ranked team lost 3 games bad SOS

5-7 Wash State with Number 73 Scoring Offense, 85 Total Defense, 97 Scoring Defense.

5-7 Arizona with Number 56 Scoring Offense and Number 59 Scoring Defense.

4-9 Washington Number 60 Total Offense and Number 103 Total Defense.

7-6 California Number 50 Offense Number 58 Defense, played 3 ranked teams lost 6.

4-8 Stanford with Number 105 Scoring Offense 107 Total Offense, No. 98 Total Defense.

3-9 Notre Dame with Number 116 Scoring Offense and Number 72 Scoring Defense.

6-7 UCLA Number 99 Total Offense and Number 29 Total Defense, sucks.

The Big 10 and the PAC-10 are a joke.

I am NOT impressed with the PAC-10 because they played weak strength of schedules, QUITE DAMN OBVIOUSLY as seen herein, and even with their weak schedules, they still play 8 games of 13 all but 5 of 13 against teams with A LOSING RECORD.

Figure it out.

By ............................................BuLLdawg

It does NOT measure up to The SEC Schedule Strengths. Especially, it does NOT measure up with UGA’s schedule – again this year, as it was last year too.

Top 15 Opponents we play next season ? LSU at least once if not twice. Florida. Auburn, Tennessee, LSU again at the end of the regular season if we get past a portion of these games. All of these 5 teams would kick Ohio State’s butts again. We always do. Every time.

Oh. Southern California’s response ?

Their 2nd best game all season long is against Arizona State, not ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 15 teams – like The 5 SEC Teams in the Top 15 of the AP Poll at season’s end.

Excuse me.

We play them too, Number 16 Final AP Poll Arizona State.

On the road.

We also play Number 13 Florida on the road.

We also play No. 15 Auburn on the road.

We also play Number 1 National Champions LSU on the road.

UGA is Number 2 in the Final AP Poll, not Southern California.

We also play Number 12 Tennessee.

Yeah, right. Adjust your glasses and repeat after me : Southern California’s Schedule is just as good, or BETTER, than UGA’s.

BS.

To me it explains a lot about an athlete who, despite being so loved in this state, has always been a mystery. He never worked out with the team in the offseason, ran track. He joined the US Bobsled team, danced in the ballet, super/hyper interested in martial arts.

I was skeptical when I first read your article a couple months back Chip. Skeptical about the disorder and such. But I’m with you, I thought Herschel and Cindy came off very sincere. The interviewer/”invenstigative” reporter was horrible. But I’m glad they have moved past this bad chapter in their lives and seem to be doing much better.

I certainly don’t think Herschel’s actions, such as allegedly putting a gun to his wife’s temple, are excused because he supposedly suffers from a mental illness. But I give him credit for recognizing he had a problem and going public with it. He has always been a fiercely private man and this is like kicking the double-doors to his life wide open. Perhaps we’ll encounter a more open and outgoing Herschel Walker in the future.

Thanks for a good read, Chip. Heschel really opened up like we have never seen. I wish him well and fell that he is dealing with this now.

Anyone who feels he is doing this for the money is an idiot. Herschel made a ton of money in the NFL and is a smart businessman. His part in Bulldog Lore remains untainted. A class act and I admire him more following this revelation.

Thank God one of his personalities was not the coke snorter that George Rodgers fell into.

Hooray for Hershel for telling his story. For not being ashamed; for not living a lie; & for not being too big for his confession. This only proves to me that Hershel is the solid sole that I watched and yelled for since he was playing football from Johnson High School, University of Georgia, New Jersey Generals and the Dallas Cowboys. Herschel has a disease he is trying to bring forward for healing. I admire Herschel for his dignity, character and contribution not only UGA, but State of Georgia, SEC and his supporters. I wish the best for him to succeed in this unfortunate situation…

Just remember this; while most people were worshipping Herschel there were a lot of people also praying for him as they still do today. God bless you Herschel!

A heartbreak tragedy and great loss of a dean’s list student of a prominent family, whatever the cause, we just morn such a loss of a good-natured young man because it’s tough times for the Tech Family while his teammates have really taken the unexpected and hard to comprehend heartrending dreadful loss on the chin.

We would all like to extend our great heartfelt condolences and sorrow for the loss of the Georgia Tech pitcher, who was found in his apartment in a bad part of town rather than at home in Dunwoody. The funeral was yesterday and the results of the toxicology tests have not yet been released to the public. Michael Hutts, a Junior from Wesleyan High School, is survived by his devastated parents Mark and Vicky in Dunwoody and brother Matthew. His roommate returned home to find him in the apartment by himself. He was only 21 years old. Mr. Hutts was a fun person to those close to him, a good person, a top-student, a fine looking gentleman, and an athlete in top form whose role on the baseball team was expected to expand this his Junior Season with a great ERA this season of 3.38. Michael was a 3-sport letterman at Wesleyan in Gwinnett. In cross-country, he assisted in the State Championship for his team (first 5 runners each school count.) And, while at 6’ 2”, he had also played on the basketball team, Mr. Hutts had set every high school career school record as a pitcher. A southpaw, he held school records for most career wins, most career strike-outs, most career innings, and ERA. At Georgia Tech, Danny Hall had pitched him sparingly only 8 innings all of 2006 as a Freshman, only 13 innings all of 2007 season as a Sophomore, and he had pitched 10 innings in 2008 with a career 1-2 record as a long reliever with a Tech career 6.75 ERA. His role was going to have expanded this year and his senior season next year. Michael Truxden Hutts was a smart man. Danny Hall’s baseball team had just beat Georgia at Tech’s field and a day later, he expired. Tech tried not playing the next game; then added that to a double-hitter the following day. Recently, they had to cancel the game the day before yesterday to try to pull themselves together for the funeral. Last night, they were trying to find the strength together to put their hearts back into the game he loved and made so much fun for everyone. Hopefully, Tech can draw inspiration from the Answers. God Bless.

89 so basically because of a difficult schedule, (only really percentages tougher than any other year) UGA will just not be able to beat anyone worth a damn. How exactly does that work?

Zeb, Cousin Cuz was fired up on the General’s homemade firewater. Cuz takes it neat, with no chaser. Zeb, it seems to Me that You can get a little testy after a couple of snorts Yourself! I catch Myself giving some idiot the what for after a few drinks at times, fortunately, I usually come to My senses and delete it, though a few posts have slipped through. There should be a device on a keyboard that you have to blow into before typing, like on a habitual violators car. BTW, NEVER e-mail Your Girlfriend when drunk, especially if You have had a disagreement!

Chip, I found it unusual that Moreno won the Coffee Couny Hustle Award, I didn’t think it was for a featured player. Also, it was My understanding that Moreno was held out of most of the contact drills. How about a blog breaking down the spring awards? I would also like some info on Our bball recruits, thanks, Shane
