UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Larry, Herschel and UGA hoops
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greetings folks. Back from vacation. It was nice to kick back for a week. Now it’s time to get back to what you care about — University of Georgia sports. I also will be helping out with our coverage of the Athens Regional Foundation Classic golf tournament this week. It’s a Nationwide Tour event held at Jennings Mill Country Club. At least four former Dogs in this year’s field.
Couple of things I need inform you about this week:
First, the Larry Munson bobblehead doll. Since we ran a story I wrote about it last week I have been swarmed with inquiries from people wanting to know where and when they can buy one and so has UGA. Here’s the deal: Some local Athens retailers, such as Bulldog Sporting Goods (706-546-0616) have a few of them in stock. However, the few that stores are selling out so fast you can hardly find them. The best place to get one is to check the UGA athletics website (www.georgiadogs.com) regularly. When the main page comes up, click on “G Shop” on the left side menu, then type Munson into the search window. If the bobblehead doesn’t pop up from the search, that means they’re out. They had several dozen Monday morning but sold out in three hours, according to marketing director John Bateman. They should have some more midweek but won’t advertise them on the website until they physically have them in stock. They’re retailing for $30 with all the proceeds going to charity… .
Secondly, as you probably know, Herschel Walker’s book tour has begun. He began promoting “Breaking Free,” his book about living with diassociative personality disorder, in New York City on Monday and is supposed to be on Nightline tonight and some other shows this week. He will be in Athens at the UGA Bookstore signing copies Friday from 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. As elusive as Herschel is, I can promise you that will be your best chance to get up close and personal with him… .
Also, looking ahead to next week, one of the cool things on tap is the end-of-the-year awards banquet for the Georgia men’s basketball team, given by the UGA Tipoff Club. Should be a doosie this year with the Dogs coming off their first SEC tournament championship in 25 years. The Tuesday, April 22 even is being held at Athens Country Club with social hour beginning at 6 p.m. It is open to the public but reservations have to be made by Friday and there is an admission charge. Tickets, which include a full dinner, are $50 for non-club members. Call 706-542-1432 for reservations. I usually go to this and it’s always a lot of fun.
That’s all for now. We’ll have plenty of football and baseball and other good UGA conversation to talk about all week.

Thank God you are back, I think.
All last week we had this Larry Munson bobble-head doll as the picture and lead story on the site. Now I’m as big a fan of Larry as anyone and recognize the significance of the donations for the doll, but please! It doesn’t need to be the whole site for that many days. Herschel finally came and made up some stuff just to get it off. We had the athletes drawing straws to see which one would jaywalk in Athens just to get arrested so we could change it. (The AJC would be all over that story).
The other lead story up all week was about some guy from Troy who may be the first native Georgian taken in the draft. Sincerest congratultions to him, but the story needed to be on the sports page or the Tech site since they have several athletes who are projected to go high. The story had Marcus Washington buries at a maybe 10th. NOT a lead story for the Dawg site.
Until Bill’s blog today there was no mention of the baseball team sweeping two consecutive national #9’s in two weekends. Only a story about how the bullpen was doing well a week ago. Mention of the Gymdogs regional win but no interview with Suzanne about how she will get around the loss of the very best gymnast in the US.
Please keep us informed about baseball, gymnastics, men’s and women’s tennis, and all Georgia; don’t just sit and wish for the next jaywalking episode or scooter going the wrong way on a one-way street.
Thanks again, hope you had a great vacation, and welcome back!

In the spirit of the Larry Munson bobblehead can we have the Michael Adams pin the tail on the jackass. Sure to be a crowd pleaser at any tailgate party if they still allow them during the 2008 season.

Saw Billy Humphrey hobbling around on crutches on campus last week; he had surgery on a microfracture on his right knee. I wished him well and said he would be down five or six months.

Thanks, Dan. I knew they were going to consider surgery for Billy but didn’t know he had already undergone it. I’ll follow up with some details. Good stuff!

Chip, obviously some of these people can’t read because you did say that Herschel would be in Athens on FRIDAY from 12:30 til 2:30… Anyway, the b-ball banquet should be quite a treat this year, hate that I will miss it. Good to have you back.

Leave Cuz alone! Haven’t You ever had too many mint juleps? I think old Herschel’s problem could be traced to a common celebrity ailment, Book Hypeosis. The only known cure is a swing through the late night talk show circuit. Munson bobble head! For the fan Who has everything? Basketball Awards banquet, fifty bucks for rubber chicken and twenty minutes of coachspeak. I hate to miss that one! How many days was it ‘till kickoff?

Jeez…You guys a terrible. Herschel says he has a mental illness and all you do is poke fun. At least he’s not getting tasered on the side of the road like Worley. Give the guy a break. He’s got plenty of money. I’m sure he’s not making this up just to profit.

In all seriousness, sorry to hear about his situation and wish him well. I only wish he stayed for that last year since was my FR year in Athens.

Herschel, can’t keep a job?, write a book. Fans forget who you are?, get on the talk show circuit. If a guy doesn’t know who he is or was, how can he write a book about himself? This is pure junk and anybody with have a lick of sense will not give it the time of day. Geez, what a pile of poop!! Oops, I forgot UGA grads.
