What do you expect from G-Day?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Well, it’s finally upon us, that most glorified of all scrimmages, the G-Day Game.
These spring “games” have come a long way in recent years. A long way toward what is another question. What once was an intimate spring ritual for a couple of thousand rabid fans in flip-flops has morphed into a modest spectacle. Of course, Alabama famously drew 92,000 for its spring game last year. Am I the only one who came away thinking that was just a tad bit warped?
Some schools have tried to do something even more with it this year, such as Bama, of course, and South Carolina and Florida. But the NCAA mercifully stepped in a couple of weeks back and said rock-and-roll and country music acts and massive ad campaigns aren’t exactly the business model they’re looking for in college athletics.
Georgia, to its credit, seems to have kept the event in perspective. The Bulldogs sell tickets for charity and only modestly promote their beloved G-Day game. They have guest coaches but they don’t fly them in from the West Coast or anything like that. And almost solely based on the excitement and anticipation of this coming season, they’re talking about drawing a crowd in the neighborhood of 40,000, depending on the weather of course (which doesn’t look great as of today).
On top of that, this year’s event is generating the most extensive broadcast coverage in school history. The game will be telecast live by Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) and will have be broadcasted on radio by WSB-AM 750 — it will mark the first time since 1993 that WSB has carried the Bulldogs’ spring scrimmage — and the Bulldog Radio Network, XM satellite radio (ch. 199) and the UGA campus station, WUOG.
GXtra, UGA’s subscription website accessed through georgiadogs.com, will also be broadcasting the game live. It will be first time that the UGA “official” athletic website has ever streamed a football game.
So, all that said, what I want to find out from you guys is: (a) who plans on actually attending the game and who will tune in via these many other options; (b) what are your hopes and expectations for the game? Coach Mark Richt and defensive coordinator Willie Martinez have said they’re going to sit most of their front-line players. So you want to see Caleb King rush for 100 yards? You want to see the defense stone the offense, something it was unable to do last year? You want to see everybody come out injury free?; (c) and who out there considers themselves a big-time fan but could care less about this glorified practice?
For me, I’m most interested in seeing these young offensive linemen in action and see if any of the defensive ends look up to filling the shoes of Marcus Howard and the other great predecessors at the position.
Let’s get the banter going and keep it going through Friday. I’ll monitor throughout, answer your queries and provide some tidbits or two in the meantime.
C-ya.

I will be there! Chip or anyone else, are they going to allow for tailgating on campus for this? By that, I mean will the school be allowing for open alcohol containers on campus (on the north campus quad, for example). If there’s any insight into this, please let me know. I don’t want to be tailgating and get ticketed for drinking a beer!
As for the game, I’m looking to see how much Stafford’s fundamentals have improved. Also, I want to see who’s gonna step up on the O-Line and be consistent. Will Bean Anderson or Kiante Tripp turn the corner? I also want to see who will step up at receiver if Harris and MoMass aren’t playing.
Finally, I will the LBs be flying around to the ball? And will Asher Allen have a spring game that solidifies him as a shut-down corner?
Let me know any info. you can about the tailgating thing.

Will not be there - daughter’s soccer tournament in Knoxville, TN. We will all scrub down upon our return!!!!
Two things I would like to see:
Dawgs positioned for a good year… But schedule is incredibly tough this year:
SC always plays us tough - Bama will be improved, Tennessee has beat us last 3 out of 4, LSU & Florida back to back on the road. Auburn game is always tough.
Love hearing talk of National Contention - but let’s scale it back and focus on the following:
Key to winning SEC EAST: Defense BABY!!! Defense really needs to play like it’s hair is on FIRE to give our young OLine time to gel. If O-Line does not over achieve - we will be merely good - but not great.
Go Dawgs & Hunker Down!!!!!!!

sorry, hit the wrong button. Like I was saying, ESPN hyped OSU for a big crowd and laughed at BAMA for it. In today’s internet, football news is 365 days now. CHIP BTW, have you did a story on Adarius Bowman? He was arrested for mary jane and they are saying his stock just hit rock bottom. Plus, is his brother still looking at UGA? THX

I think it stinks that people like myself who live out of state cannot access a radio station on the internet to listen to a frickin’ football game. GXtra’s strangle hold grip is grossly excessive. And NO, it doesn’t prompt me to spend a dime on anything they have to offer.

It is about assessing talent and performance. It is about gaining experience working in units. It is about timing and technique. It is about playing with disciplined intinsity, It is about the fun of working out at Sanford Stadium in front of the fans. No injuries guys. Give those to the teams next Fall.
PS to Joe Cox. Work on your basics and your focus. The team will need you more often than you realize this coming year to back up Mathew Stafford. Be ready.

Chip, I wanted to be there but My nephew is getting married Saturday. My Brother could have done a lot better job of raising that kid! CSS, WSB, et al are not available down here in the South Ga woods, so I will have to depend on You with Your many skills to be My eyes and ears. As for the game my main concern is that no one get hurt. Stafford and Gray should get the most snaps, Stafford is the present, Gray is the future. I would like to see King do well and the o line play improve. The d usually gels quicker than the o anyway.

By FL DAWG
April 3, 2008 3:03 PM | Link to this
I want to see:
1) No injuries
2) A much better than expected O line. This will be one of the biggest questions next year.
3) Continued improvement from Stafford. He mentioned his footwork and decision making earlier in the year, I guess we will see how much he has worked at it.
4) How good will the back up running backs be. This could be a good reality check for them.
5) Receivers have had MS as QB for over a year now, can they catch his fastball.
6) Who will be the #2 QB?
7) A suffocating and extremely fast Defense. This is the first game of the year (actually second if you count HW)and CWM needs to have his guys focussed! Defense wins championships.

Let’s start with the obvious:
Next Concern will be the defensive backs. I feel good about our front 7 on defense. I know there is talent back there but I am concerned about the mental side of being the last line of defense.
I always leave the g-day game perplexed. Anything good that happens on one side of the ball is a negative on the other.
Cannot get that trip to play Erickson and his boys in the desert off my mind. What kind of salary cap are they operating under?

I personally will be listening to XM 199 from Dallas, TX… It will be a great day to see what kind of off-season the OL has had and to get a good look at which #40-something’s can make an impact on special teams. Caleb King should show us how deep the D is as well.

No injuries and I am looking forward to seeing Richard Samuel. I watched him play against Adairsville this past season (he played both sides of the ball) and the referees had to call him over to the side and ask him not to hit the guys so hard. This guy is PURE ATHLETE. And he has a head on his shoulders. Besides that, he just turned 17…

I want to see NO Injuries, and hustle, hustle, hustle. The news about Wednesday’s practice bothered me. The coaches will get the schemes drilled into their heads, but if they aren’t willing to give it everything every time they step on a practice or playing field, championships, SEC or National, will not happen.

I honestly expect no more then 35,000 to be there. The g-day game is what it is. It’s simple plays called and the kids getting evaluated on the plays being called. Is it competitive? Yes. It’s the difference in a steak or beanie weinies.
If you have memorabilla bring it. Former dawgs always show up and are willing to sign autographs.
2things I have always enjoyed is: 1. Meeting and getting to know the Dawg players families. There are some really proud parents out there and they should be.
About the tailgaiting the guy mentioned above. That would be the first tailgate I have ever seen. Everyone of us meet at the varsity and I show up 2 hours before the game and always park right next to the stadium.

I won’t get to make it this year, but I’ll watch the action on tv. I agree with most everyone else on what i hope to see…
The last time I saw Coach Dooley he was dragging really bad and could barely talk. Saw him today and he is doing great, has his voice back and was very energetic and sharp. Got his latest book (Barbara’s too) with autograph’s. He talked a little about his feelings on the tribute park thang, and he had some numbered prints/drawings of it that he signed and sold to us. It was great to see him again and know that he and Barbara are doing so well…
He still hates Adams and so does everyone else that I know… lol. He did confirm that he plans to transplant some of his plants to the park and seems very satisfied with what they’re doing for him. He feels like a lot of us that believe this will be a very special year for the Dawgs and is predicting that the defense will be a major surprise to everyone in the Country. Like me, he feels like the only chance of things going wrong or bad is if we lose guys to injury or moral terpitude.

I don’t care if Stafford throws for 4 TDs or 4 INTs. I don’t care if King rushes for 200 yards or -200 yards. In the spring game it doesn’t mean a damn thing. All I want to see is hustle, hustle, and then some more hustle after that. That is all we need to go from good to great in ‘08. I usually get nervous when expectations are this high but not this year. These guys are the real deal.

Like every other Saturday, i’ll be at stinking work(thank god for the internet). I just want to hear that we have no injuries, and that Richt praises the team as a whole for their hustle. These scrimmages are like icing on the cake. The plays on both sides of the ball are so basic, no elaborate schemes are called. This game is all about which players hustle or want it more.
Also, Shane#1, I appreciate you using spacing and actual comma’s and periods in your posts now. I’ve always enjoyed reading your comments, but my man, you’ve hurt my eyes so bad in the past by making me squint while reading your posts that i’m now wearing glasses! Sorry to say I cannot make the game. I have to man the forward observation post on the Savannah river keeping an eye on dem chickens. Actually, it is the weekend before the Masters and I have to get my yard ready for all the drunks parking in it. Masters is fun and a pain in the lower buttocks all at the same time. Chip, yours and Carter’s invites to the hospatality houses are still open.
I want to see Logan Gray and Caleb King. I want to see how the defence handles the two of them. I want to see it, guess I will have to listen to the radio while working.
Now everybody play nice or no Kool-aid and cookies later. Just remember WWBCD, what would Buck Cochran do. Why he would proclaim Stafford will win the Heisman this year. The biggest Stafford fan ever has got sky box seats.

Stephen, they’re painting the Endzones this year? Is it because of the water shortage, that there’s not enough grass?
I can tell you what I expect: Kris Durham is going to look AWESOME. That catch and run at the sUGAr Bowl is just the start of what will be an outstanding year for him. I expect C-King to make like Bulldog backs of old, as Special K has done. I think C-King can potentially do one thing better than Special-K, and that’s catch the ball. I expect the o-line to block well and I expect the Linerbackers, specifically Curran and Ellerbe to play OUT OF THEIR MINDS. I expect that the kicking game won’t be resolved until the kid from Florida gets here. I expect Brian Mimbs to boom some big punts. I expect Matt Stafford to heave at least one bomb and connect off of play-action. I expect to see Joe Cox play serviceable. And I expect to see Logan Gray turn a nothing play into a something play with his feet, either by running it or buying time scrambling around to find someone deep. I expect to sit in the stands (hopefully DRY) with my awesome camera which I bought for the sUGAr Bowl and capture some truly awesome football moments.
That’s what I expect. I just hope I don’t expect too much. Haha!

No injuries.
The spring game has never been a good predictor of the next season. Georgia’s defense may be better than any defense our offense will see next year. Our offense may be better than any the defense will see. The players all know what to expect from each other. The defense recognizes plays and tendencies and the playbook is very limited, but there can ber some big plays made against backups that are not yet consistent.
Over the years I have seen players shine in this game I never saw again and I saw stars who didn’t play very well.
I’ll watch it on television and I’ll be very interested, and I will remember some very ugly spring games that preceded SEC Championship seasons.

Bob, Not sure if the water shortage is the reason or not. The new color is definitely an eye catcher though I am a student at UGA and have been able to walk by on the bridge to see it. One endzone is red, but the other one can’t be seen perhaps it is black? That would be kinda cool.

Haven’t read the posts to see if this has been mentioned…if you can’t go, and your cable system doesn’t carry it, you can treat it as a PPV & get it from GXtra on georgiadogs.com for $9.95.
If this flu bug doesn’t clear out by tomorrow, that’s the option i’m going with.

jacksrbettor, I wanted to tell You how much I appreciate Your GridIron Gate blog. The research You did showing which teams have recruited the most four and five star players was great. The next time someone tells you that the number of stars by a player’s name don’t matter mention this fact to them. The teams that recruited the most four and five star players from 2003 to 2007 were LSU, USC, and the Gators. Those teams have won four out of the last five BCSNGS. Texas won the other, and was no slouch at recruiting, coming in at #6. When You fans have a chance check out Jack’s blog, You might learn something.

IMPORTANT DAWG INFO:
I bought 4 season passes yesterday, in section 217. They are putting all of these requests in a “new” UGA Section, 217-219
GO DAWGS!
Please read below:
As previously reported here, there is a great deal of interest from our fans for tickets to the Georgia Bulldogs vs. Arizona State Sun Devils game in Tempe. So the question immediately becomes, how do I get tickets? Well…Kanu (Dodgy at Best blog), and I have done the research and gotten the 411.
Face value on the single game ticket is $55.00. However, UGA fans usually don’t find out until June or July what the away game ticket cutoff score will be for Hartman Fund givers.
Why wait when you can get them now: You need not wait in limbo while air fares rise and hotel rooms get booked up. You can get your ASU vs. UGA tickets today. The Arizona State ticket office is currently selling season tickets for as low as $99.00 per season ticket book (no contribution required). The season ticket package does include the Georgia game. ASU Ticket Office: (480) 727-0000 Hours: 12 pm - 8 pm EST No online sales Yes. That’s right. Season tickets for $99.00. In other words, only $44.00 over face value for the UGA game stand alone. Best of all, these tickets are located directly beside the official visitor section (see Seating Chart below).
this is real, and you gotta love the PAC-10. What a bunch of losers.

For whoever it was who asked, I checked with the UGA event folks and all the regular gameday rules will be in effect for G-Day. That is, mainly, that you can have open container on campus but nowhere else… . Weather is not looking so good right now but, who knows, it could change for the better… . Gen. Neyland, yes sir, the game is on CSS.

New tailgating rules from the desk Dr. Mike Adams. 1- Anyone wearing a jersey will be assumed to be an athlete and will be arrested. 2-The antiquated college custom of “having a good time” is not suitable for the “Harvard of the South”. It is hearby banned. No one on the UGA campus is to have a good time. Not now, not ever. Violations will result in persecusion. I meant prosecusion.

Boy, oh boy!!! G-Day is finally here. I’ll bet most of us Dawg fans look upon this day the same way WWII vets looked upon D-Day. It may be even more important!
Hope I can find enough change under my cushions to buy gas to get to the game! Then I will be enjoying Milwaukee’s Best outside the future Sanford-Dooley stadium! Go DAWGS!!! Sic’ em! Woof, Woof, Woof!!!

Chip,
Why does it seem that NO ONE is paying any attention to, or thinking much about, Kris Durham? We know that C-King is going to be good, the same way most of knew Special-K was going to be good. We know T-King is going to be good. We know that Ellerbe and Curran are going to be heat seaking missles in the middle of the field. But I’m telling you Chip, Kris Durham is going to be THE breakout player of the year for the Bulldogs. He presents a target as tall as a tight end, but with much, much better hands than our current starting tight end (sorry Chandler fans, but until he proves he can consistently catch the ball, he doesn’t deserve many looks per game). I’m telling you guys, Kris Durham will be Stafford go-to receiver on third downs and when the pocket breaks down. This guy is GOOD. Drew Bennett good. He’s gonna be a taller version of Wes Welker for the Dawgs, but without the porn-stache.

Bob Sacamano, funny you should say that about Kris Durham. I was doing a radio show just this morning and they were asking who were some break-out players that aren’t getting a lot of pub. Durham was the first name out of my mouth. You know he’s up to about 210 or 215 pounds and Richt has mentioned a couple of times how good he looks. They love him on “high-point” balls, meaning fades and other routes where the receiver’s job is to out-jump the coverage. We’ll have to wait until the season to see for sure but seems an astute observation, Bob.

Chip,
It’s been known to happen. But thanks. I just remember that he had a damn good spring game last year and was kind of miffed that he didn’t get much playing time until the sUGAr Bowl. How much of a difference would it have made if it were Kris’s soft hands and not Chandler’s less-than-soft-but-not-quite-stone hands in the South Carolina game? I hate thinking about what-ifs, but man, we could be sitting on a MNC right now if that were the case. I just hope he gets on the field a bunch. I don’t like the way that John Eason coaches or handles his wideouts. I don’t like the fact that there’s a lot of rotation with the recievers. We have some prime talent at receiver and it seems like no one is ever producing, and that’s the coaches rotating 8 receivers a game. No Bulldog will put up a 1,000 receiving season, and it has nothing to do with talent or the ability to do so. As long as the rotation is between 6 and 8 deep instead of 5 deep, no receiver will really stand out except for a few bright moments or bright games here or there. With Special-K and now C-King, there just aren’t enough touches to go around. But I really like Durham. I just think he’s going to be the go-to guy. Over the middle, who’s gonna stop him? If Stafford can get it to him in stride, he can bust some Welker-like YAC numbers.

Not going to the ‘game’. I agree with Chip: progress of O-line and DE; specially center. Stafford won’t play much; little will be there for eval; but he’ll do well in that short time. More important will be how the backup QB does. It’s maddening how the good stuff is on Comcast/Charter; how bout us satelite users?! SS/FSS would be a better choice, since both cable and sat subcribers get those channels.

Yes, I will agree. This game is more important than the the war, religous freedom, and independence. I could not sleep last night and my kids were out of school the entire week. I understand that Perdue cancelled all government activity and suspended the state legislature. No room within 100 miles of Athens can be had for less than $300.00 and Athens gas prices are up to $ 5.90. This is, of course, should have been expected. AJC will carry the score as its headline.

OK, im upset and need some help. I’m at work so I cant watch the game. None of the radio stations in my area are covering it. So, I tried to get on the web and pick it up on one of the radio stations. I’m getting messages that say they cant streamline the radio broadcasts and to go to “this link” to access it. “This link” always takes me to georgiadogs.com and they require a fee for me to be a fan. All these “fees” to be a fan are starting to irritate me. It costs me more to park my car last year at the Auburn game did it did for my ticket =( If anyone out there knows how to listen to the game via the internet (minus the fee) please link it. I’m trying the school radio site now. I’ll get back to ya…

ok…Stafford and Moreno got limited playing time. Aside from that, I thought that Knox, Daniels, Gray, and Moore stood out.
But it is scary dawg fans…I can’t remember ever seeing a college football team this good and this deep. If the coaches can keep them motivated…they will need to go ahead and make some room in the trophy case.
