UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Any All-America, All-SEC candidates?

Loyal UGA Blog participant Bob Sacamano asked a good question yesterday which I thought would make a good blog topic. He asked what Bulldogs might have a chance of earning All-America or first-team All-SEC honors this season.

It’s a great question and one for which, of course, there is not an exact answer. As ever, all-conference, and to even a greater extent, All-America honors are closely connected to the success of your football team. It’s doubtful that David Pollack or Thomas Davis, as good as they were, would have been pulling down all those national honors had Georgia not been doggone good those seasons.

But if the Bulldogs come close to meeting the through-the-roof expectations for them this fall, their best players shouldn’t have any trouble getting national attention. Here’s some I think have a chance at national honors (in order of prominence):

1.TB Knowshon Moreno: Duh! The 5-11, 207-pound sophomore from New Jersey rushed for 1,334 yards and 14 TDs as a freshman/part-time starter. Imagine what he might be able to do as a featured back! Health and O-line play will be big X factors.

2.QB Matthew Stafford: I actually think Matt has a chance to have a bigger impact than Knowshon because teams are going to be loading up to stuff the Dogs’ running game. If he gets his accuracy to the rate Mike Bobo wants - at least 62 percent - Georgia could be unstoppable on offense and Stafford will roll up some big numbers.

3.CB Asher Allen: Not only do I think Allen has a chance to establish a national reputation as a lock-down corner but he’s also a return specialist for the Dogs, which can result in SportsCenter highlights.

4.LB Dannell Ellerbe: I’ve never heard Mark Richt gush about a player the way he has been about Ellerbe this spring. He’s got all the tools but is also coming in with the added bonus of confidence and leadership distinction. The sky’s the limit for this guy.

5.WR Mohamed Massaquoi: I’m not sure if a lot of Georgia fans actually realize how good a receiver Mo-Mass is. Forget all the talk of the fabulous freshmen coming in, this guy is mega-experienced and coming into his own. As the main target I see at least 50 catches for him and a chance of becoming a 1,000-yard receiver.

Now that’s just for the national awards. As I mentioned, the Dogs have a boatload of players that will earn all-conference notice and perhaps play their way into national recognition, especially on the lines of scrimmage where it’s harder to get attention. Among them DT Geno Atkins, DT Jeff Owens, TE Tripp Chandler, LB Rennie Curran, FS Reshad Jones, FB Brannan Southerland and OT Trinton Sturdivant.

As always, let me know what you guys think. Have I overlooked somebody? Have I overrated someone?

In other business, I want to solicit some help from the Bulldog Nation. I’m doing a story this weekend in conjunction with G-Day on the tremendous expectations among fans for the football team this season. What I’m trying to find are some tangible examples of that excitement and anticipation. Have any of you already made reservations in Miami for the BCS Championship Game? How about Atlanta for the SEC championship? Anybody already reserved a hotel in Tempe for the Arizona State game? Who has laid down some dough on the Dogs in Vegas? You know, that kind of stuff.

Of course, if I’m going to put you in the paper, I’ll need you to e-mail me directly at ctowers@ajc.com and include your name, city of residence and phone number where I can reach you. I very much appreciate any help you provide. C-ya!

So good to have you back, Chip! Never knew how much I enjoyed the blogs until they went away. I don’t think there is a better all-around fullback in the country than Southerland. Rennie is a darkhorse for national honors IMO, if he continues the play he had down the stretch. His speed is just unbelievable. Taking my two sons to the game this Saturday, as it will be the first football game for them both! Go Dawgs!

AJ Green for Freshman of the Year…SEC & National. This guy is going to make an impact. Long arms, long legs, ups, downs. He can run over people.

Also just got my hotel for the LSU game. I look forward to it being one of the best nights of my life.

We’ve got a crowd of us from Denver heading to Tempe in September! ASU tickets go onsale in August for those interested.

Has anyone organized a tailgate/meeting place for visiting Dawg fans? Is there a local alumni group?

Barring repercussions from his shoulder injury, I expect Jeff Owens to be the guy with the most postseason pub from this team. His play went way up the last half of last year.

I don’t know if there are any national awards for fullbacks, but Brannan Southerland is by far the most under appreciated guy on the team. He can do it all. There isn’t a better fullback in the entire country, and he will play for a long time on Sunday’s. If he doesn’t make first team All-SEC, something is wrong.

Anyone interested in getting ASU tickets RIGHT NOW, can read about the details here:

http://georgiasports.blogspot.com/2008/04/tickets-available-for-arizona-state-vs.html

Basically, you can buy ASU season tickets for $99 apiece by calling the ASU ticket department. This is just $44 more than the face value of the ASU away game ticket that will be available from UGA’s ticket allotment. The $99 ticket will probably save you money anyway because you can go ahead and book your flight now. By the time you wait to see if you meet the UGA away game ticket cut off, air fare will have risen.

An added bonus is showing the country that we are such rabid fans that we buy up all the available ASU season tickets just to go to one game.

Lastly, you can apparently donate the tickets you don’t use to Boys Town or something to feel good about yourself and get a tax deduction.

The above link does a better job of explaining this and gives contact information.

The picks for recognition are spot on. I’m interested to see how our freshmen in the kicking game fair. We might have some potential for freshman awards there.

We already have ASU reservations; I started watching for airfair deals about a month ago and snagged one last week. We also have our LSU/FL plans set - taking the motorhome to both and skimming the Gulf Coast between. We won’t make SEC or Championship game reservations until after FL due to superstition.

Loyal Brethen, we are getting way ahead of ourselves. I do not think Stafford in CMR’s system will make All-American, Knowshon has a legit shot but teams will be keying on him this year. UGA had a reputation for great DB’s so Allen has a good shot.

Let’s just play good team ball against the toughest schedule any SEC team will have this year.

Oh boy, blackdog is back, now if yellowblood will just show up My day will be made. I know it must be difficult to come up with something witty and new all the time, so why don’t Ya’ll take a few months off and the rest of Us will post the inane spooning and tickle pile comments? Now as for all Americans, a healthy Moreno should be a shoe-in. Momass has a shot, but UGA spreads the ball around so much that I don’t see 1000 yds for any one wr. Stafford is a long shot for first team with Tebow around, if He has a good year possibly third team. UGA rotates lbs and d linemen so much that i don’t see any one player putting up the necessary numbers on defense except possibly Geno Atkins. All the other players Chip mentioned have a shot at all SEC if the Dawgs win big. Paul, in My book Southerland is an All-American, but except for an Earl Campbell very few fbs put up the rushing numbers necessary to be noticed by the national media.

Hey Gerry12-

No one mentioned the NC except you. The column asks if anyone, based on expectations, has made reservations. I know a lot of Dawg fans and we don’t talk about the NC because it is not in the control of the team. What they do talk about is the SEC Championship. That is within reach of this talented and seasoned group.

Even if UGA loses in Baton Rouge, which could well happen with a schedule as demanding as the Dawgs have this year, any LSU fan who claims a single loss on the road to a non-division team should stop the SEC Champion team from playing in the BCS Championship is a f*** hypocrite of the highest degree.

Caleb King will be up for freshman awards. So will Ben Jones. Yes, I have called friends in Az. and we plan on being in Tempe for the game. History: ASU has had a storied past that many people are not aware existed before joining the Pac-10. They were in the Wac conference and played great football under Frank Cush(the Bobby Knight of college football) for years ,but were unrecognized in the east and most of the rest of the country. One sports writer who always did his homework lobbied hard for them to be one of the teams to compete in an inaugural bowl. Furman Bisher wrote of their exploits and helped convince the Peach Bowl to pair them against FSU and that was ASU’s start toward national recognition. A receiver for FSU was touted as a sensation (his nickname was “Jinglebones” because he was tall and gangly), but many people are not aware that the Qb for ASU was Danny White who played in the inagural Fiesta Bowl and later took over as Qb for Roger Staubach in Dallas. Other members of that ASU team in those years was a running back named Green and a receiver(I’m old and have brain farts and can’t remember his name at this moment) who went to the pros and later his son followed. All three were in the Heisman balloting one year together. Also, one ASU tailback on the Peach Bowl team was named Monroe Elie(Eley?) who was a Knowshon Moreno -type runner and Kush constantly referred to him as Elie Monroe to such a degree that I’m not sure that I have reversed his name or not. So ASU has a big Ga. connection in their history and you can thank Furman Bisher. By the way, White threw an 80-yd pass to the blazing receiver at the 10-yd line for a TD in the Fiesta Bowl game against Pittsburgh who featured a running back named Tony Dorsett. ASU won. My point in this trivia is to let you know that the “word” on White was that he couldn’t throw the ball over 40-yds in the air, that ASU wasn’t predicted to be tough and to let all my fellow Bulldogs know that this is a proud football school in the same mold as UGA. I’m going to let you look up their coach and find another set of facts we must face when we travel to ASU. ALL of the games on our schedule are set for intrigues we haven’t even heard about(remember Appalacian State?). Pull hard for the dogs and remember every game will be tough and I am not aware of any team that doesn’t have history that they are proud of and can’t play their hearts out. Respect all these opponents and don’t take any game for granted. You will be prouder of the Dogs and feel closer to them if the unthinkable happens.

I never watched much Seinfeld so I don’t understand the reference above, however the most recent Georgia Magazine says that the guy who played Newman on Seinfeld attended UGA: LINK

I am thinking about taking my son to see the Arizona State game. I thought I might be able to get a reasonable flight on Southwest or American - well until talks of price increases started recently. I figured I’d buy tickets from scalpers. I imagine that there will be plenty of people selling them for close to face value, and maybe the ticket office will still have some. UGA should make a special effort to see that UGA alumni out West have a chance to attend the game. Colorado had a pep rally in Athens, sold special t-shirts, etc. For many out West, making it to Athens is not easy and this is a rare chance for UGA to make contacts.

Matt Stafford has the talent, coaching, and ability to do very well this year. Couple those things with the fact that his number one fan has ascended to the great dawghouse in the sky and become a personal angel, perched upon Matt’s shoulder pads, and there is the chance that Stafford will have the best year that any previous Dawg QB has ever had.

CHIP 1. 37 D1 QBs threw for 3000 yds last season. 3 were from SEC (UK’s Woodson, TN’s Ainge, UF’s Tebow). On avg, those players completed about 474 passes, with a 63% completion rate. Will #7 be an ALL American? NO. Going back to 04, no UGA offense has attempted more than 365 passes in a season or produced a 3000 yd passer. To earn AA honors, #7 would need to break some serious trends. He is, however a lock for ALL SEC, second only to last yr’s Heisman winner from UF. Based on offensive production under CMR dating back to 04, I project he will attempt about 358 passes for 2600-2999 yds. He could post even bigger numbers depending upon his accuracy level and Yds per attempt statistics. Although he was 8th in conf with 55.7% of passes completed, #7 did finish 3rd in SEC with 2523 passing yds. I look for him to improve upon his QBR of 128.92 (4th in SEC last season).

By minookadawg

April 2, 2008 3:05 PM | Link to this

CHIP I’d love to see Mo Mass produce the type of numbers you think he is capable of. Can he? I don’t know. Given an additional 18 receptions along with the 15.3 YPC stat he posted last season, #1 would project out at 766 yds for the season. If he is to become a 1000 yd WR, he has got to become a consistent part of the offense and be able to beat double team coverage. I think he is capable of 2nd team All SEC.

Ya’ll beat me to the punch on this one, but I gotta post it anyway.)After FB #36 graduates, UGA should start giving out the “Truck Award,” in his honor. The recipient shows outstanding passion and desire, and gives his all to UGA, even if it means transitioning from a featured role on the offense into a valuable lead blocking position. He is definitely an ALL SEC performer and a possible All American candidate. The younger FBs are skilled as well, but he will be irreplacable. Go DAWGS!

If freshman RB Thomas (not yet on campus), WR TK 4.41 40 according to Rivals, CB #11, or someone I’m not aware of is half as good on ST as Double A, can we please stop risking him getting smashed on a return?! I understand that ST can be an awesome X Factor in determining the outcomes of games (Remember Flowers a couple years ago in Knoxville?), but we need Allen’s presence every week in the secondary. In attempt to get back on topic, I believe S CJ Byrd is poised for a big senior season and capable of All SEC honors.

I can buy the hype around Moreno but the rest of these guys are nobodies. Especially Stafford and Mo-Mass. Neither of them have won a game w/ their play. Stafford choked against SCar and I didn’t see Mo-Mass do thing that makes me believe that he’s ALL-SEC. If you’re looking for an ALL-SEC WR, look for Kenny McKinley to put up some big numbers this year…twice as many REC yards as MO-MASS - like last year.

I cannot believe it took someone this long to figure out the origin of my name.

No, I am not the never seen, shady friend of Cosmo Kramer (and briefly of Jerry Seinfeld during the Kenny Rogers Chicken episode). I’m just a fan, and a blogger, who actually spent a lot of time away from the blogs because of how vitriolic they got. I was actually one of a handful of the original, pay-for-blog guys. I miss those days, but I thought I’d come back for another round.

But, I have to say Chip, I think Curran might be pushing Ellerbe for National Honors this year. He just has a frakking nose for the ball. He’s the kind of guy who could have 5 INTs, 5 fumble recoveries, and 10 sacks. He can have a monster year. I think Atkins is 1st team all-SEC for sure. So are all the usual suspects. I think if the Dawgs win the SEC and make it to the MNC in Miami, I think either Knowshon or Stafford will win the overrated Heisman, unless they cancel each other out leaving an opening for the QB of the team I believe we’ll be playing for the MNC: Mark Sanchez of USC. That guy is the TRUTH. I just want, for once, to be able to turn on ESPN sometime this fall and not find Kirk Herbstreit and Rece Davis pimping the Suckeyes and the Big-ZERO. I understand that ABC/ESPN has all of these television contracts with the Big-ZERO, but seriously, after the last two years, something has to frakking give. Also, I’d LOVE not to have to watch updates every ten minutes of a QB who lost 4 games last year as a starter and was found to be nothing more than a throwing fullback by the end of the year. Yes, I’m talking about Teblow. Also, Gator fans, Moody isn’t looking too hot. Uh-Oh! Haha!

Bring the heat Bob! Passion is always a plus. #35 will absoulety DESTROY the SEC next season!! I thought Gaytor 15 had NO CHANCE at winning Heisman after we finally beat that team in Jax. I have to give him credit, though. That guy IS an awesome talent as well as a great person off the field. If Dawgs needed a QB, I’d wish “Teblow” wore RED AND BLACK! I wonder if #7 feels any pressure to achieve as much as Gaytor 15 has already gotten done at UF!

Hunk, Cuz, I too think of Buck often. Buck never lost faith in His Qb or His team. I thought the Dogs would finish 8-5 or 9-4 with Their rookie o line and rebuilt d. I never saw 10-2 and a Sugar Bowl win. Buck did. Bob, I appreciate Your confidence, but let’s not get too cocky. I remember a QB that ran like a fullback and had a strong arm. This guy handed Our butts to us more than once. His name was Archie, and He has a couple of boys that have done well.

This KM/CK scenario kinda reminds me of the late 80’s. Folks were so enthralled with Tim Worley and Keith Henderson, they didn’t realize how good Rodney Hampton actually was. Until he dominated the 89 Gator Bowl. Best game I ever have and probably ever will attend. Wearing the Green and White of Mich St were would be Falcon Andre Rison, talented tailback Blake Ezor, Tony “Pancake” Mandarich, etc…..Rison TORCHED Dawgs secondary, but Hampton carried UGA to victory in Dooley’s last game.

minookadawg… you just lost all membership and privileges to Bulldog Nation.

Tell me what Teblow has accomplished. Seriously, tell me what he’s led his team to.

Has he led them to any BCS bowl wins? Any regular bowl wins?

Has he led them to a double digit win season?

What exactly has Teblow done for his team?

Oh, that’s right, he had a lot of three yard dives for TD’s, the kind that Brandon Southerland usually gets here in Athens.

Oh yeah, his team LOST 4 games last year.

Oh yeah, he LOST his bowl game.

Oh yeah, after a few of those losses, Teblow, a great kid, was such a poor loser that he walked to the locker room and refused to shake the hands of the opposing players and coaches who beat him. Such a great example he sets, huh?

Oh yeah, his coach left him in the fourth quarter of no less than 3 blowout wins in order for him to pad his stats to win an overrated award.

So, once again, minookadawg… please, please, PLEASE tell me what Teblow has done for his team that is actually better than what Stafford has done as Georgia’s starter for two years.

Bob, take a Xanax!! What has Tebow done? 1. Member and change of pace QB for Nat’l Champ Gator Squad! Everybody knew he was going to run the ball when he would momentarily take over for C Leak, but NOBODY could stop him from gaining yards!!! 2. HESIMAN Winning QB!!! 3. He shows something you apparently lack, CLASS!** I will always support #7 b/c he’s a Dawg, but his collegiate career to date is pale in comparison with #15 of those hated Gaytors! Disagree, BOB? Go argue with the trophy case Tim is building!! Just b/c I can appreciate the talent level, and maturity of a rival athlete, that does not mean in any sense that I am unworthy of calling myself a Dawg Fan!! The kid sets a Great example off the field by voluntarily attending missions aimed at improving the lives of less fortunate people! 4 Losses, Bob?? Our team lost 4 in 06, including a Homecoming Defeat to Vandy and a loss to those pesky Wildcats from Kentucky!! Who was our QB?! I ain’t Stafford bashin’, but that same season Joe Cox had to come off the bench to pull us out of the fire against rebuilding Colorado!Colo-Freakin-Rado, Bob!! Who was our starting QB? My favorite Dawg, Matthew Stafford. He showed tons of class and leadership, while hoisting a beer keg over his head while underage at a NASCAR event. What is the #1 issue Dawg Haters bash the program about? Underage possession/consumption of alcoholic beverages. Sound familiar? We have a TE who is currently putting that very same issue behind him. What was his QB up to? Keg tossing while not quite 21!! Thank you, Bob. You got me so riled up, that I stooped to your level and just lost my sense of class. I apologize for any desparaging comments regarding any current or former UGA student athletes and for any negative connotations my comments may have construed toward the UGA football program!! Chip, To add to what Oledawg wrote about ASU. My grandfather was President of the Peach Bowl when it began and when ASU faced North Carolina and Touchdown Tom McCauley. I was in attendance at Grant Field when they faced each other and sat through the rain and even snow that night. J.D.Hill was the WR (Played for Buffalo for several years) ASU went undefeated that year!!!! Coach Frank Kush was a man after Erk Russells own heart. He revolutionized a training regiment that developed speed and quickness. EX> Had players do sprints downhill to develop footspeed (if your feet don’t hit the ground fast you will be eating some dirt face first.) and increase overall speed. Frog Hops for 40 yards (try it without pauses and then call the coroner) to develop the burst off the ball. And several othe rinnovative routines. He knew he couldn’t get the big hosses so he figured he would out quick everyone. He finished his career with a .700+ Winning percentage. FYI- ASU’s original mascot (until the 50’s or 60’s) was…The Bulldogs!!!!

Wow, who’s the mature one. Notice I didn’t stoop to calling you names, Palooka, though for your post, you certainly deserved them.

Once again… WHAT HAS TEBLOW ACCOMPLISHED FOR HIS TEAM?

He was not the starting QB in 2006. Chris Leak was. He was the FULLBACK that came off the bench of the 2006 team. Big whoop. He’s Brandon Southerland’s back-up. He won the Heisman. Wow! Oh man, let’s kiss his butt like you do! He won an award that is meaningless with regards to actual talent. Jason White won one. Gino Torretta won it. Eric Crouch won it. And Tim Teblow won it. What do all of those guys have in common? No football career beyond their last year of eligibility. He put up a lot of yards in a pass happy offense. Who else did? Ummm… COLT BRENNAN! He’s never won a bowl game. In fact, in the clutch, Teblow has proven to be anything but, as he had a chance to win the game in 2 of his 4 losses and gagged.

Matt Stafford has proven to be pretty clutch when he’s called to it. Who can forget the Alabama game? Or the Peach-fil-A Bowl? Matt Stafford also didn’t lose the Vandy Game or the Tennessee Game. Those are all on Joe T. Matt Stafford also won his first two Bowl Games. He led the Dawgs to 18 straight points against what was the best defense in the ACC (oxymoron as that is). He does what he’s asked to do within the offense. He has more QUARTERBACKING talent in his pinky than Teblow does in his body. Stafford won’t have to change his position to play in the NFL. Teblow will. No one’s ever going to take a running QB again after the Vick, Alex Smith, and Vince Young debacles. He’s also led his team to a BCS win, for his second bowl game. Teblow has yet to win his first. And I say again, Teblow is just about the worst sport in college football today. He’s a spoiled punk who can’t shake another player or coach’s hand when he loses a game, but has no trouble whoopin’ up when his coach lets him play the 4th quarter of blowouts, like against SoCarolina, just so he can have the numbers to win said overrated and meaningless award.

Dude… you tell me to take a Paxil? I’m the picture of serenity compared to your ranting. And I say it again. You are no Dawg. I’d put money that you’re a Bug or Gator in disguise. There’s one thing about saying someone’s good, Palooka. Then there’s you, kissing Teblow’s @$$. “Oh, Timmy, you’re so wonderful, you’re so great!”

oldgold,

Even though, owing to your Bug allegiance, you most likely meant for that to be a putdown, I think that a great many of us take it as a point of pride. To win the SEC is an honor deserving of high praise, unlike winning the AwfulCC. To win the SEC with 1 or 2 losses is better than to win any other conference with an undefeated record because of the nature that is the SEC regular season, heretofore known as The Gauntlet. Beating all of those supremely talented teams and winning an SEC title is something I believe that is worth more than the MNC. Case in point, last season, LSU received far more of a fight from the fourth best team in the SEC after Georgia and Auburn in beating Tennessee, then they did from blowing out the Big-ZERO Champion Suckeyes.

Bob, you need some serious help Peach Bowl? You’re lauding a 9-21 129 yd 1 int 1 td performance?! Tony Taylor and the UGA defense won that game, causing turnover after turnover in the second half! You’re just the type of biased fan that gives Dawg Nation a bad name. I ain’t a Dawg b/c I can recognize and appreciate good talent, even when player discussed does not attend UGA? You’re full of it!! Pass happy Tebow—3286 yds, 9.89 YPA, 32 PASSING TDS, 6 INT, CMP% 66.9, QBR 172.47; Stafford—2523 yds, 7.25 YPA, 19 TDS, 10 INT [more int thrown in 2 less attempts than Tebow], CMP% 55.7, QBR 128.92. 1.Stafford has proven himself to be better than Tebow?!! Stats don’t lie! 2. Tebow put up big #s b/c of pass happy offense?! Then why didn’t Stafford? Tim Tebow threw 350 passes in 07. Matt threw 348!!Plus, #7 had the benefit of a strong running game, Tebow WAS Florida’s running game! The man did it all. Don’t confuse respect with brown nosin’.To be able to complete nearly 67% of 350 passes in a season, tells me that this QB ain’t too shabby throwing the ball. At 6-3 and 235 lbs, he fits the mold of a prototypical NFL QB. Last time I checked, Heisman (I actually spelled it right, this time) Trophy is given to COLLEGE Football’s BEST Player. It ain’t an invitation to the PRO Bowl Game in Hawaii, so keep mentioning Gino Toretta and co. However, if FB #36 can be as accurate and account for as many passing TDs as UF’s QB 15, he will one day play in a Pro Bowl. If not as a FB, then definitely as a QB. I believe he also has Tebow’s toughness and ability to play through pain (Tebow’s shoulder was banged up prior to playing DAWGS and he still gave our defense a hellova fight.

When he does sign a big contract to play in NFL (hopefully after 09-10 season), half of that check needs to go to Willie Martinez! His defensive units put #7 and the UGA offense in position to succeed in those contests. I would love to see #7 put up huge #s and win a couple NC for UGA. Will it happen? Palooka, methinks thou doth protest too much.

You uttered the following statement:

“I wonder if #7 feels any pressure to achieve as much as Gaytor 15 has already gotten done at UF!”

That’s a ridiculous statement worthy of derision and expulsion because once again, what has Teblow done? He’s won some individual awards. What’s his record as a starter? How many bowl wins does he have? How has he performed in the clutch? Eli Manning and Tom Brady didn’t have great Super Bowls numbers-wise when they won their first Super Bowls. But when it mattered, they got it done. Teblow hasn’t. He’s choked. He’s a fullback who throws the ball who won’t be playing QB in the NFL. Stafford will. Stafford doesn’t have to do anything to “keep up” with Teblow, because he’s already had a better career than Teblow so far. Those of who care about how the team does and where the team ends up as opposed to stats and numbers and meaningless awards, that’s the way we think. It isn’t rose colored glasses. Did Teblow lead his team to a win in crunch time vs LSU or MICHIGAN? No, he choked. Has Stafford performed well in the clutch? Yes, he has. Teblow can have all the individual awards, that’s fine. Stafford will win an SEC Championship or two and a MNC or two and Teblow can win two more Heismans. Who will be the better QB then? Those of us who care about TEAM would say Stafford. Stafford will also be drafted higher, and he’ll be drafted as a QB. He’ll make 1st round money as a top-5 pick. Teblow will be lucky to be drafted in the third or fourth round as an h-back, fullback, or tight end. Once again, maybe if you remove you lips from Teblow’s @$$ for a minute, you’d see what I’m trying to say. As it is, you need to seriously take a chill pill.

Palooka, so you’re someone who puts stats above team accomplishments. Intersting. Hey, guess what? It doesn’t matter what the stats are in a loss. A loss is a loss. The team lost. In two losses Florida had last year, Teblow had the ball in his hands last, and Superman looked more like Handiman. All those pretty stats mean NOTHING if the team loses. Does anyone besides me really remember that Thurman Thomas was the best player on the field in Super Bowl XXV? No. People remember Scott Norwood missed a kick and the Giants won. You’re fighting a losing battle here. You wanna be a stat nerd, so be it. But that’s not real football. Real football is wins and losses and team accomplishments. And when measured by those levels, as a QB, Stafford is heads and tails above Teblow right now. Look, if you can’t understand why you’re wrong, that’s not a me problem, that’s a you problem. You can continue to kiss Teblow’s @$$ if you want, and the more you do, the more and more you seem to be a something other than what you proclaim yourself to be.

The reason I put stats on display, is to accentuate the stupidity of your statement that Tebow has a history of choking during UF’s losses. I like Stafford and expect a great year from him in 08-09. However, it is ludacris to proclaim #7 as being heads and tails above #15. I trust stats, because they can be quite telling. If #7 is so much greater than Gator 15, why does Tebow have a higher Quarterback Rating?, Why did Stafford throw more ints in less pass attempts? Why are CMR and CMB concerned about his footwork and decision making process? If UF had a running game aside from TT and UGA’s defense bustin’ heads for the orange and blue, UF would not have lost 4 games! But, that is all summantics.

Individual statistics and honors are nice. However, I’ll take a team with no All-SEC, All-American or whatever for wins. We won’t care what the individual stats are if the Dogs can’t win. It’s a team effort. No one player will win/lose a game. We need to quit putting pressure and throwing out numbers for players to reach and try to find a way to teach them to play as a team with one goal and statistic in mind, a win, one game at a time. Like it or not, UGA with even one loss won’t have the appeal of some teams with two losses. Just look at LSU.

Bob

Please log on this morning and tell everyone that you were drunk last night or that it was all a big joke between you and minooka for 5 hours last night.

Chip leads his blog with a “good question from a loyal UGA blog participant” and you spend the night representing loyal blog participants with what has to be one of the top 3 dumbest arguments since these blogs started.

What other name have you posted under, if you don’t mind saying, because the Bob handle has only caught my attention over the last few months.

My son is an offensive lineman and linebacker for his high school team. Before he went to school this morning, he read your comments from last night, and asked me to politely respond for him.

He said that since national championships, sec championships, heisman trophies, individual accolades, and various awards didn’t impress you, that he would ask you to consider this: Teebow came in as a freshman qb and had a huge impact on his team. He won the hearts of the coaches, fans, and media… but most importantly, he won over his team… especially the offensive linemen. They saw a gritty, balls to the wall, tough guy that played qb with such reckless abandon that it made them play twice as hard.

Knowing that Teebow will sacrifice his body by playing like a wild linebacker that the coaches rewarded by letting him pull a Refrigerator Perry for a few plays, (except it is for real) caused a bond on their team that usually takes a few years to earn, if ever.

Everyone in Gator Nation was screaming for Teebow to replace Leak as a freshman. Guess what happened? It caused Leak to step it up a few notches, and Fla made it through a gauntlet of a schedule (similar to what we face this year) and won a Championship. What must it be like to be a freshman and get sent into the game with everyone in the world knowing that you are gonna take the snap and try to run over somebody, then do exactly that for play after play after play, game after game after game.

I’m also a loyal UGA blogger, people know how much I hate Fla. If you want to also accuse me of blindly brown nosing the Gators, then go ahead and make yourself look more stupid than you already have. Your arguments against Teebow’s ability don’t hold water, my friend. It also takes away the koodos due to the Dawg defense for stuffing him so bad last year (7 sacks and countless hurries and hits), because according to your view he is not a talented qb.

I don’t know the story behind him not shaking hands after a game, perhaps he was embarrassed and didn’t want the enemy to see him crying after the game, which is just as true. Attacking his morals and character as you have make you look like a sad human being. Talking stats, talent, ability, etc. is great but your argument against his character and your reasoning for it went way over the line and only serves to make you look like the one morally bankrupt.

Minooka may have been a little harsh in his critique of Stafford, but that is only a matter of opinion. You sir, were off base in both your evaluation of Stafford and especially Teebow. Your arguments were worse than any Tech or Gamecock fan has ever been on here, and after your introduction by Chip, gives validation to the haters that talk about how sorry Dawg fans are, as a whole. I want to separate myself from you as far as possible as a Dawg fan.

Personally, I want Teebow to be at his very best when we meet them again. No excuses about bruises and the like, I want us to line up our best against their best and do battle.

Anyway, sorry for the long post everyone. I’m sure I’ll need to be around later for a response but Coach Dooley is coming out to speak to our Chamber of Commerce and I have to go help set things up.

Apologies… you say I was off base in my evaluation of Stafford. How so? You don’t explain how so. I thought I was actually a little rational. Teblow plays in an offense where he puts up big numbers. So did Alex Smith. How talented was Alex Smith? I’m sorry if I don’t buy Teblow as the be all, end all. And I will vigorously defend against anyone if they try and call Stafford onto the carpet when brining up the individual accomplishments Teblow has won. Once again, as a starting QB, Stafford has won more big games, brought his team back in the clutch, and has actually won his bowl games. Teblow is a throwing fullback. And he was a bit player on the 2006 team, a trick play player. His career ends in two years. Stafford’s doesn’t. To me, that means something. Stafford is already a better QB than Teblow because of the systems they play in and what Stafford is asked to do in reading defenses. You don’t see Stafford looking towards the sideline before the snap. You often see Teblow doing so. I maintain what I said. The NFL is done taking running QB’s out of college from spread systems who have issues reading defenses and taking snaps from under center. The NFL is a play-action league. Not a shotgun league. The spread is a fad that actually got its first dying death rattle when the Pryor kid decided to go to OSU and actually learn how to be a QB instead of being a throwing running back. Add that to the fact that LSU, Auburn, Georgia, and good Lord, even Michigan, have followed a good blueprint on how to stop Teblow and the spread (two words: pass rush), count me as one who believes he’s peaked.

You can want nothing to do with me. I take that in stride. It’s unfortunate. But as I post more, maybe you’ll let the breadth of my opinion speak for me, as opposed to one conversation. Best regards to you and your son.

Hunk Erdown… I had some more written more, but it had gotten erased, I guess… that’s why it reads like I started in the middle of a thought. Regardless, I won’t apologize for my belief in the team over the individual when it comes to awards such as the Heisman, which I do believe is the most overrated award in sports today. Like Chip said, if you’re winning all-SEC’s or all-American’s, that means your team is a winner. I guess if you’re losing four games, you’re winning Heisman’s. Have a good day.

By Bob Sacamano

April 3, 2008 10:43 AM | Link to this

One more thing… I attacked Teblow’s sportsmanship. Not his morals. I said he was a bad loser and a sore winner, if what I saw in person as well as on television is true. When someone refuses to recognize the other team’s effort in winning while having no problem whooping up blow-out wins over an injury-depleted team, what do you call that, Hunk Erdown? It’s just a question. I’m not angry and not flying into hysterics like Palooka. But to call me morally bankrupt for bringing up a very valid point doesn’t make much sense. Teblow may be an awesome individual off the field and go on mission trips and all of these things. Then again, I know many people in and out of my life who do all of these outward charitable things and get all of this recognition for their good works who are downright putrid human beings behind closed doors. I’m not saying that is true with Teblow, I’m just saying that I am naturally wary of those who ensure other people find out about their charitable works, and if you don’t think Teblow, his coaches, or his parents aren’t slipping that info to reporters, than you’re insane. Better that after you die people find out how charitable a human being you were, instead of reading it in the paper over, and over again. Michael Vick gave plenty of money to charities, don’t forget, and people like Arthur Blank always made sure to let us know that fact before the events of last March and April. To me, Teblow not shaking the hands of another team, even one time, tells me more about him than anything else. How we handle pressure situations and defeat reveal more about our true character than any of the good works we may do. Remember, not by works alone is the Kingdom achieved. If he matures this year, and meets the other team at midfield instead of walking to the locker room, then that would be awesome, and it would prove something to me. As it is, I remember seeing him live and in person walk off the field of Jacksonville Municipal Stadium after the loss and doing the same after the Auburn game, which I watched on television. Emotions is a cop-out excuse, btw. Just thought I’d explain that a little more. As for my personal character, I usually let that speak for me, and won’t devolve the conversation by trying to defend myself.

individual stats aside i would choose stafford any day over tebow. as stated by bobo stafford audibles 70-80% of the time and when he reads a defense he hands the ball off to moreno or brown when necesarry and when he is forced to throw he is running for his life behind a mainly freshman offensive line. unlike tebow he was forced to start as a true freshman and was not given the luxury to come in as a backup in special situations behind a senior quarterback. stafford was thrown to the wolves as a freshamn and as a sophmore started behind a freshamn line and still had the knowledge of the game to make the right decisions at the line of scrimmage to make the correct play calls and led his team to a ten win season and a #2 ranking. this year he will still have a young line but as a junior he will be a beast. i wouldn’t trade him for another qb in the country especially tebow. buck was right in his support of stafford. this season will show that

You have to be kidding. Only 5 players? From all the what if scenarios being thrown out, why not the whole team being All American or All Sec? Your butts still get beat by the OBC in Columbia. Fear the Gamecock crow and bleat me!!

Moreno has already proven himself and will rack up the yards next season. Stafford, Allen, Eller & Mass have huge talent. If all cylinders are firing The Dawgs will be very tough to beat.

Curran barring injury is going to be the real deal. With his heighth maybe the pros will stay away till after his senior year. The boy is fast. when he heads to the ball he is like a heat seeking missile. ASk Mr Harvin (Percy) and TEblow or Just ask Auburn or Kentucky about Curran.

Bob

I appreciate your being somewhat civil in your response. I think its best for me to just drop this because your points of debate are not debatable. You say that you’re not attacking Tebow’s morals or character, then come right back and make plain insinuations that his religious and missionary efforts are some type of conspiracy to toot his own horn to somehow glorify himself.

Be careful, Coach Richt’s missionary work and religious beliefs are well publicised also, and he loves to talk about it. Maybe you feel the same way about him. I can’t/won’t argue “conspiracy theory” concerning what is in a man’s heart, when he is talking about the way he was raised from childhood and the joy and rewards from God that he claims as a result.

Can’t debate about Tebow’s possible future career in the NFL. He is a first year, sophmore starter that won the heisman and racked up very good passing numbers without a decent running back behind him. Unlike you, I have no idea how he will progress in the next 3 years when it comes to whether or not he could be a stand-in-the-pocket passer. No tarot cards or crystal ball here, but he’s got the physique, he’s not scared, and he has done nothing but set records and garnered the acclaim of every coach in the country since he was in high school. I completely agree that his freshman year was nothing more than playing Larry Czonka in the shotgun, but not last year. Last year he showed everyone with half a brain that he is a true threat passing the ball. How you or anyone for that matter could state so adamantly that he stands no chance of being an NFL qb in three years is absurd.

To be honest, I could care less about Tim Tebow, but he was the subject of the debate that got Minooka berated with baseless accusations of being everything but a Dawg fan and brown nosing Tebow when it was obvious that he was simply trying to argue facts.

One other point about Tebow’s lack of sportsmanship that in your words make him a spoiled punk, worst sport in college football because he would not go shake hands with a team that started the game with the most publicised, infamous unsportsman-like penalty in the history of the game… I can give him a pass on that one, myself. I liked the penalty, thought it was brilliant, but I can understand why a sophmore qb being called on to be the leader of a national championship defending team might get his feelings hurt. I think it is hypocritical to berate his sportsmanship after we made a calculated decision to take a sportsmanship penalty or two, or three, or four as part of our gameplan. To me, it’s a wash. We stomped on their endzone and rubbed they’re faces in it—- he didn’t want to shake hands with us. I’ll have to go back and look at the tivo of the game to even allow that he didn’t shake hands anyway… nothing personal, but facts aren’t your strong suit right now in making a case for your beliefs.

Anyway, thanks for not getting too carried away in your response and forgive me if I did. I am officially dropping this debate, I can’t win it under the current rules of engagement and it’s pointless anyway. I just wish that the regular bloggers here could all show some class, its tough enough with the haters that show up without us cutting each others’ throats.

Good day atcha, Bob.

In a recent interview, Snoop Dogg was asked what he would do if someone who came by the house to date his daughter was blastin’ his early music from his car. His response was,“I can’t fix what I done in the past. All I can do is be better today. What I done yesterday, I can’t fix.” Some of my comments directed toward “Bob” last night were out of line. Unfortunately, I can’t erase them. This blog is set up for Bulldog dialogue, not “Bob S” vs Minookadawg. For my participation in last night’s pointless debate, I apologize to all. Go DAWGS!

In the spirit of the Dawg Nation and by the powers issued to me by a hostile takeover, I absolve all who threw themselves under the bus last night in their dedication to making their point, regardless, irregardless, nationalgaurdless of others being of the same position, difference of opinion and their choice of paper or plastic. We are all Dawgs. We all want the same thing. It is okay to have a difference of opinion. Let’s just remember that opinions are like armpits, everyone has two and without the invention of deoderant, they would all stink. As I have said often, football is fun, life is real. Let’s keep the fun in the blog, it is a great escape from the stress of real life.

Its a done deal. AJ Green will not be playing for Georgia in 08. Just a matter of time before the word is out. As far as Freshman making a huge impact and getting honors, look no further than Caleb King. They will not be able to keep him off the field this year.Geno will be an All American with ease. Reshad Jones will be a second team AA.
