UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Incredible interest in spring football
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greetings from the blogosphere!
My sincerest apologies for the prolonged absence. First we had some technical problems, then I was off work for an extended period after Georgia’s basketball season wrapped up.
I’m still trying to get the technical issues worked out but, in the meantime, I’ve got an alternate method for posting them so we should be good to go for awhile. And that’s a good thing because there’s a lot to get to.
So without further adieu - or is that ado? - let’s get to it:
It’s amazing to me how much the whole spring football thing has grown over the years. The interest in what’s going on as the Bulldogs, and just about all teams for that matter, practice six months before the season starts is incredible.
On that note, I found it interesting that the G-Day Game is going to be broadcast live on the Bulldog Radio Network on Saturday. In fact, at one point Georgia legend Larry Munson was going to provide play-by-play of the glorified scrimmage. But Munson’s people decided this past week to pull out. Exactly why is unclear.
I called Larry at home on Monday to talk to him about doing the game and he informed me that he no longer was.
“I think that was on the agenda but I think they changed their minds,” Munson said. “I’ve still got some health issues. I really don’t know what to say. We discussed it a couple of weeks back and I was going to do it and then something changed.”
It wasn’t UGA that pulled the plug, however. I talked to Damon Evans later on Monday and he said, as always, “Larry can do whatever he wants.”
I’ll try to talk to WSB’s Neil Williamson this week and see if I can find out more. In the meantime, the plan is for it to be Scott Howard and Eric Zeier as it will be on road games in the foreseeable future.
The game is also being televised on CSS.
Speaking of the spring game, I sat down with offensive coordinator Mike Bobo on Monday to get the lowdown on how much we might see quarterback Matthew Stafford and tailback Knowshon Moreno. The basic answer is not much.
Bobo said Moreno will start and play in the first half but he doubted if he’d get more than “maybe five” carries. “It’s a fine line,” Bobo said. “He needs work like everybody else but we have to be smart.”
You’re likely to see more of Stafford. Bobo was emphatic that the Bulldogs’ heralded signalcaller needs as much live-action work as he can get as they work to improve his accuracy and the quarterbacks will be protected from contact in the game. At the same time, however, Georgia’s working hard to develop depth so you’ll likely see equal amounts of Joe Cox and Logan Gray, each of whom have been working with the No. 1 offensive unit this week.
Similarly, star wideout Mohamed Massaquoi may be extremely limited because of a neck sprain and defensive tackle Jeffrey Owens will be out with an injured shoulder. So my advice is, if you want to see any of your Saturday heroes, better get there real early.
And to get in real early they’re strongly suggesting buying your tickets online by clicking here so you don’t have to wait in long lines. A pretty good crowd is expected.
Lastly, I didn’t get a chance to share my basketball experiences with you guys toward the end of the season. In a nutshell, that storm at the Georgia Dome was intense and what Georgia did thereafter was one of the greatest athletic accomplishments I’ve ever witnessed. It had all the dramatic elements: a coach whose seat was white hot, a spectacular weather event and four wins in three days by a group of guys that, by all indications, had no business winning a championship but did so because everybody said they couldn’t.
In a word, “unforgettable.”
I could go on forever but I need to save some things for the coming days and weeks. So please forgive us for the troubles with the blog and be sure to come back as I’m going to try to provide some “pearls” in this space every day.
C-ya.

Chip,I certainly hope You meant ado, Your last adieu lasted too long. How much pt do You think Caleb King will get Saturday? Amen on Stafford, and the recievers. I look for other teams to game plan based on stopping Moreno,or at least slowing Him down. IMO, Our passing game will be more important than ever. We have to stretch the field to free up the ground game and We need to take advantage of all those seven and eight man lines. I think We can get Our pass protection problems worked out, I have great confidence in the Coaching Staff.

You’re absolutely right about ado, Shane #1. I was having as little fun with words there… .
As for Caleb, I suspect you’re going to see a LOT of him. He’s the one that has to prove himself. He’s the one that has to learn what to do. I think one of the biggest things folks are overlooking about this team is the possible impact the loss of Thomas Brown, and Kregg Lumpkin to some extent, could have on the team. The Dogs have zero proven depth at tailback and Knowshon still has some holes in his game beyond carrying the football. It needs to be a big, big day for King.

Chip, you’re lucky you showed up today. Shane and I were about to send Seal Team 5 in to get you. Glad you’re back, and please don’t let so much time lapse between blogs. If you’re having technical troubles, just grab someone from North Ave and they’ll fix it. Anyway, Shane, unless CB is hurt, it will be just like last year when everyone wanted to see KM in the spring game. He’ll get his carries. But saying we’ll see more of Stafford kinda worries me. I would think that by now he should have things worked out, or does it just mean they want to see him work with the starting receivers in a game setting? I’ll have to have a friend tivo it for me cause DirecTv doesn’t have CSS. I’ll talk to you guys later on in the day.

Does anyone know if Ian Smith is still on the team? I never heard anything about him after coming back from the suspension. Wasn’t he at one time a projected started for us on the OL going into last year?
Chip, can you also give us an update on how Hebron has looked in practice?

Red Clay Hound: Ian Smith is long gone, never to return… . As for Akeem Hebron, I’ll see what I can find out today. Coach Richt has lauded the linebackers a lot lately but, to be honest, I can’t recall him ever singling out Hebron… . Stay tuned.

We’re going to miss Thomas Brown in the backfield blocking schemes. He was a missile. Although Knowshon appeared to be picking them up last year. CK looks to be a good talented kid maybe he has as well

CHIP I recently read that LB Dewberry will be out of action until June. He was one of the guys cross training at other LB positions in order to soften the blow of losing backup LB M Washington for entire 08-09 season. 1.Will this additional setback provide an opportunity for Charles White, or any other young LBs to step up into the rotation? 2. IF RB Samuel does not secure 3rd string position at tailback, could he provide some depth at LB in 08-09? 3. If Blair Walsh needs a redshirt year to mature into an SEC caliber kicker, are the Dawgs really in dire straits at that position, or can Butler or an unknown asset hold down the fort? Thanks for your time.

Chip, I knew that was Your attempt at humor, though very subtle.{feeble?} You should know that most of Us football fans do not pick up on subtle. When humor gets deeper than the Three Stoogies it loses most of Us. Zeb, remember that Matt was just a sophmore last year, so He still needs a lot of rote work. He improved greatly over His freshman year, but He still missed too many open recievers and His putting the ball in the wrong spot and not having the right touch on the pass caused some of the drops that Our recievers caught so much flak for early in the season. Matt needed to improve His footwork and the only way to do that is endless repetitions. There were also some tiiming problems in the qb-center exchange, Nando’s loss is showing up.

Rampdawg: To quote Richt from yesterday regarding ben Jones, “it doesn’t matter that he’s a true freshman. If he’s one of the best five, he’ll play.” And he might be. Richt loves him… .
John CL: Strickland’s injury issues have become a real problem. Again, Richt heaped praise on jones for fighting through his ankle injury. I don’t see Strickland fighting through a lot of his problems. Then again, they could be more severe than I’m aware of… .
minookadawg: Interesting handle. You’ll have to clue me in on that… . I think Charles White is definitely getting more PT as a result of those injuries but I think the Dogs might go with Ellerbe and Curran and Dent as much as possible this season just because the trio is so good. Barring injuries to those guys, Georgia may have its best linebacking corps in a while… . And just from a personal standpoint, I think the Dogs would be better off with Samuel at linebacker. If the other TBs they currently have in camp and committed come close to living up to their billing, they should be set in the backfield. And as we’ve seen in recent years, you can never have too many hard-knocking ‘backers. It’s a tough position where injuries run rampant… . And redshirting Walsh is a definite possibility if one of the other PKs prove reliable. That position is one of the biggest unknowns facing Georgia in this most season of great expectations.

ARdawg, You said a mouthfull there old buddy. TB’s blocking will be missed, but don’t forget his running. Knowshon did a great job and got most of the PR, but TB took over the Ole Miss game and the GT game when Moreno couldn’t get it going. IMO, Brown will be missed most for His leadership. He was a leader on the sideline, on the practice field, in the weight room and in the classroom. Can Knowshon and Matt lead this offense? Kelin, the leader of the secondary, is gone. Nando, the leader of the o line, is gone, and Howard, the leader of the d line, is gone. Who will step up?
By minookadawg
April 1, 2008 2:44 PM | Link to this
TB will definitely be missed. I remember that killer block he threw on a charging Tiger LB during the Blackout. #20 stuffed him, then pancaked him, allowing #7 to throw a long six-strike to Mo Mass for a 10-0 1st Qtr Lead. The timing was flawless, as Gary Danielson had just finished complaining that KM should have been getting more PT.
24 is awesome, but #20 will be missed in every aspect. Not only was he a leader on the field, but he led by example in the weight room.By birdman

I will be paying close attention to #7’s accuracy during spring game. He completed at least 60% of his passes in 5 games last year. The Dawgs averaged 41.6 PPG in those contests, and were sparked by his 9 TD to 2 INT ratio. In additional 8 games of 07-08, he threw for just 10 more TDs, along with 8 more INTs. CMB,”We have got to get him to play four quarters on a consistent basis. He is going to have to if we want to reach our goals…”

minookadawg: The Iron Dawg Award goes to the player(s) that made it to every single workout, voluntary or otherwise, from the end of the last season to the beginning of the next… . The Coffee County Hustle Award is one of Georgia’s oldest awards and it goes to the player(s) that show the most hustle and fight through the fall camp. Generally not a star player though I think Pollack claimed it a few times.

That Paul Johnson has never been a disciplinarian and he lets his football players run around and get drunk and do anything that they want to do. It makes him out to be the joke of a coach that he is and his teams are a bunch of thugs that do not know the meaning of responsibility. He should be fired at once.
Wait a minute, I got confused. Jaboe is a Tech recruit and Johnson is OUR coach. That crappy AJC is picking on our team again and they have NO business printing this kind of non news about college students just because they play football. All kids make mistakes sometimes and this just shows that the AJC favors UGA and is out to get Tech. THWTAJC

Chip, dude, we’ve been going through some SERIOUS withdrawals here as the Bugs have been getting all of these daily updates and we’ve been subsisting on Barnhart’s meager blogs (Dawg-wise). I’ve always liked your blogs, but damn, you disappearing for pretty much the month of March has made a lot of people realize how much we rely on you for our Bulldog fix. It wasn’t quite as bad as going cold turkey off of heroin, but it’s an experience I don’t want to have to go through again.
I know it’s early, but who do you think on this team are sure-fire First Team All-SEC or even All-Americans?
I think Knowshon for sure, as he’s getting all the early press. I also think Curran has the ability to make a Pollock-like jump in the region’s and nation’s consciousness this year. I think Stafford is a darkhorse for All-SEC honors (they do love their Teblow, after all). I also think Atkins stands a good chance of some honors as well.
Being around practice and seeing what you see, who do you think ends up with the postseason honors, which to me, are always better than the ridiculous “pre-season” All-SEC picks.

Ronnie: OK, as for the spring injuries, I called UGA to get an official list of outs for G-Day but they have to get injury information approved and I haven’t heard back from them. But I compared notes with Carter and here’s what we came up with off the top of our heads …
DT Jeffrey Owens (shoulder), DE Brandon Wood (Achilles tendon), FB Brannan Southerland (foot/leg), WR Tony Wilson (ankle), OG Tanner Strickland (foot/ankle), OG Clint Boling (mono), LB Darius Dewberry (groin), LB Marcus Washington (shoulder)… .
Also looks like WRs Mohamed Massaquoi (neck) and Kenneth Harris (ankle) might not play because of minor injuries… .
Now I probably missed a couple but I’ll let y’all know for sure when I get a comprehensive list from UGA… .
Bob Sacamano: Thanks for the kind words. I was remiss in letting the blog be down so long. Check the last entry on the last blog before this one for more details… . As for your All-SEC/All-America question, I think I’ll hang onto as a blog topic in the next day or two.

THIS JUST IN
I didn’t know UGA was in the market for an assistant director of football operations but apparently they were. Here’s a news item that the Dogs just released:
Josh Brooks Named Assistant Director of Football Operations at UGA
For Immediate Release
April 1, 2008
ATHENS————-Josh Brooks has been named Assistant Director of Football Operations at the University of Georgia according to an announcement by Bulldog head coach Mark Richt.
Brooks has served as director of football operations at Louisiana-Monroe for three seasons.
Brooks will assist in handling the day-to-day responsibilities in the football office as well as team travel, dress lists, participation lists and orientation letters.
The Hammond, La., native spent two stints at ULM where he began as a graduate assistant coach in 2002. He was named director of football operations in 2004, working as an assistant to the athletic director and head football coach for two years. After working for a construction company in Irvine, Calif., Brooks rejoined the ULM staff for his second stint as director of operations in 2007.
Prior to his time at ULM, Brooks spent three seasons at LSU, working first as student equipment manager, then as a student assistant coach. As a student assistant, he worked with the quarterbacks and former offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher.
Brooks earned his B.S. in Kinesiology from LSU in 2002. He is married to the former Lillie Harrell, also of Hammond.

Great blog today , Chip. I can’t wait to get a look at T King this weekend, although I’ll miss the competitiveness of Tony Wilson out there. He works so hard that it seems to spark the other receivers to do the same.
On the basketball note, that was the most incredible few days I have ever seen in UGA men’s b-ball, beating out their final four run. I had a tennis match at Piedmont Park the day of the final, so when I finished and the game had just started, I took a chance and went by. The UGA ticket guy handed me a ticket and said Have Fun! Wow! I graduated in ‘92, and of all of the football and b-ball moments I have seen in person, that one makes the top 5, maybe 3.

I can’t believe you have to BUY tickets to the spring game. I haven’t been before but I was thinking about going this year. I guess I’ll forget it if the demand is that high. I know it’s two TOTALLY different teams/fan bases, but a few years ago a friend of mine who is a Tech fan took me to their spring game and it was super simple to get in, sit, watch, etc and leave. I don’t like Tech but it was a fun spur of the moment drive down 75 from Marietta! And it was free…like I said, it’s not Georgia but still… it’s not even an exhibition game.

Everybody please remember that several 2009 recruits will also be at G - Day this weekend. We will have a small class and want to attract the best, so it never hurts to have a good sized, enthusiastic crowd. Be supportive too; I believe much of the team will be attending Little’s Mother’s funeral on Sunday, so some might have a hard time focusing completely.
Prediction: Barring injury, Rennie Curran is my dark horse pick for 1st team All SEC this year
Small nice side note - I like that Felton or the Athletic Dept. decided to have players call and personally thank people for their b - ball donations starting last year. It is a very nice gesture, and great marketing.

I believe that the days of Munson calling the games will end at the Southern game. As one who listened to him shouting, “Look at the sugar falling from the skies…..” I will mourn his parting and fly my UGA banner at half mast. Larry sounds ill. And if you jealous posters jump on that statement that he has always sounded that way, shame on you. The man has paid his dues and I cannot conceive of the intensity of a game way back in the stone age when the only way we got an away game was on the radio. He let us all get the picture. Just as another great American legend, John Wayne, Larry has earned his right to ride away into the sunset. Happy trails to you Larry.

And Rebel#1 and david, you are not worthy to lick the sweat off of Larry’s balls you fvckin losers. Get off the computer and do your homework you little pvssies. See, now you idiots have done it again. I feel compelled to defend an ICON, with extreme prejudice if necessary. Sorry my blogger friends, but I will not put up with that.
Ok, I just violated my own rule. I got sucked in to a battle with a wizard, or dwarf, or troll or whatever in the hell else you pencil neck little geeks call it. Just go away…..please.
I have complimented your tech team so much, and it’s been sincere. I hope some of the sensible tech posters will come to your aid and kick the sh!t out of you. Talk about UGA football all you want, but leave the old man out of it. Sorry Shane, Cuz, resorvoir and Ga native, and the many other great dogs out there who don’t respond to idiots. There are just some things that make my blood boil. I’ll try and keep things in check.

Alright Chip, you can meet me in section 114 on Saturday and I will eat my crow regarding the comment that I put out there regarding Coach Felton getting the ax right before the season finale. I guess that is what I get for listening to people who say they have “connections” in the UGA athletic department. As for football, I am very excited to see how our recievers do this on Saturday. I am particularly interested in seeing Walter Hill and T. King. I am thinking that we can send in 3 fresh recievers every play next year if we want to with all of them being a high impact player on any given Saturday. Looking forward to the scrimmage, GO DAWGS!!

Zeb I could have sworn CSS was on 630, but you and greenvilledawg say no. I have to admit I don’t have it here at my house in Atlanta, it is in my mountain house and I can’t check it. I won’t have a chance to check it out first hand before Friday night and I don’t have internet there on purpose, so I can’t give a report.
This could really be a problem. I planned on spending the weekend with a couple of Babes, watch the game and kind of ease in between them at during the breaks and halftime. But I can do that any time. The easing in part, not the game.
Tell you what, why don’t you and I go over to Athens and watch the game and I’ll send the girls over to watch the kids. That way we get to watch the game, plus if you have any male teenagers who are slow to develop I can pretty much guarantee they will be jump started into puberty.

Rebel # 1, don’t you ever blasphme Saint Larry’s name again. There are certain things in this life that are off limits to scrutiny, and Mr. Munson’s use of the English language is one of them. Don’t post again until you learn to respect an ICON.

It is a great time of year. I just love it, the football team once again comes together for another traditional UGA Football playing spoonathon.

Be careful if you order css on Dish network. There was a Bulldogs game on that I could not attend. I ordered the darn thing and when it was time for it to come on, the game was blacked out(no pun intended). Needless to say I got my money back.
And someone mentioned that Blair Walsh may need to redshirt. He will be the next kicker at UGA.

I feel good about everything I’ve read on the Dawgs through the mouth of March…except there’s little news about our kickers. Are we waiting for walk-on’s to provide a heighten competition? CHIP, tell us about the kicking game. Who’s consistently puttin’ it between the uprights at the 50?

You are correct sir as usual. TB was certainly a leader and proved it on and off the field. We’ll miss Kelin as well but I’ve got a very good feeling these guys will be stepping up. Stafford and Knowshon is ready and for a soph I think you cancount on Curran. He’s got more raw talent than I’ve seen in a long time. He didn’t hesitate to make his presence know last year.

I also hate to respond to idiots; however, this one i must. I am 49 have listened to Mr. Munson since i was a kid. Sure his voice has lessoned over the years as he has PUT everything he had into his and our beloved Bulldogs. No-one deserves to even breathe a bad word about this ICON, he can do it or say it anyway he damn well feels. When he is gone I also will fly my bulldog flag at half mast. No one will ever come close to comparring to his enthusiastic play by play. Be glad we don’t have to listen to idiots like joe morgan or any other of those moronic ESPN clowns. Nuff said, sorry bloggers, had to say it.

Lane, thanks for the link. I have been hearing good things about Anderson. “Bean” is going to dominate once he gets all the techniques down. A 330lb o lineman nicknamed “Bean” should dominate. Zoo, personally I don’t think there is a real town named Kalamazoo! I am glad to have Our blog back, and I am glad You and Cuz and all the rest are back. Zeb and I have been fighting a lonely battle on the Tech blogs, though some of those guys are good guys. I wanted to say something to the General, I am not making fun of Phat Phil anymore General, but I read on another blog that UT was having to raise ticket prices because the UT fans’ butts were too big. Fewer people can fit into the stands so prices have to go up to make up for lost ticket sales. I am not making this up, I swear! General, don’t serve those people any more hash browns! Especially scattered and smothered! However, if old “Bean” shows up at Your Waffle House give Him all the steak and eggs and hash browns he wants and You can put it on My tab. Up to a hundred bucks worth that is. Damn kid could probably break Me!

The article about Drew Butler is very interesting. I said from the start that he should have never been offered a scholarship. I saw him in high school and there many, many kickers better than him. He got the free ride because his dad put on a newspaper campaign to get him there. Just watch his punts in warmups. Very few could be considered college level kicks. Most would result in long returns due to the low hang time. I hate when politics and family favors takes a scholarship away from a deserving walkon.

The college football season does not truly begin until I hear “Get the picture” flow over the airwaves of Georgia. I’m a Ga. Southern fan and a Dawg fan. Nearing 50, I grew up listening to Larry and Al Ciraldo. Both are legendary. Back in the day, my parents would make me take the radio outside becuase I’d get so intense about the games. Nobody brings the emotion and pulse of a game better than Larry. If our opener turned out to be Larry’s last game on the mike, it would be a bittersweet honor. I still treasure the fact that Larry called our ‘85 semifinal playoff game against Northern Iowa. Even on TV, he got more and more excited as the game progressed, and his calls were thrilling as Tracy pulled out the game in the 4th quarter. I miss the old radio guys. Leonard’s Losers,UT’s John Ward,Al Ciraldo, even Otis Boggs, are all part of a gilded memory of great fall Saturdays when you lived and died over eloquent radio calls of games that seemed to be in another galaxy. Lordy, we’ll miss Larry when he goes.

shane #1, thanks. Been reading some of the blogs but not posting much. Kalamazoo really does exist. At least the snow knows where it’s at. (90”+ this season). Can’t wait for full time football, although I was proud of the BB team and their finish. Glad Felton have another year. He’s doing the program good IMO.

I am certainly not the oldest UGA fan around, but after 4 yrs in USAF, came back to Athens for my BBA & MBA. Left in ‘59. Prior to our memorable Larry Munson, there was Ed Thelaneous (Spelling def not correct), who I thought was superb, but Larry quickly bettered even him. Regrettably, many of our younger fans don’t realize how much Larry Munson has given to, and meant to, UGA football over a lot of years! GO DAWGS!!
