UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Does Richt’s new deal come up short?

This may seem ridiculous, especially to those of us who toil for modest wages, but there are a lot of people out there who think Georgia did not do enough for football Mark Richt when it gave him an $800,000 a year raise to $2.8 million annually. That’s tied with Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville for fifth among SEC coaches and Richt will be back to sixth when Tuberville’s automatic $200,000 raise kicks in next year.

I’m not going to name names, but there are at least a few folks close to Richt who thought the Bulldogs should have extended his contract a couple more years. He currently has six years left on an eight-year contract that expires in 2013.

Some thought the athletic association should have done more to comply with Richt’s request for a true indoor practice facility, one that would include new coaches’ offices and a new weight room. It should be noted that Georgia is building an addition on the north side of the Butts-Mehre Building to expand their facilities.

And, these same people wondered, why not go ahead and take Richt to $3 million a year and make a statement that Georgia is as passionate about football as Alabama, LSU and Florida. Richt still would have been behind three of the five SEC coaches (and most recent ones) that have won national championships and, after all, UGA remains one of the most profitable athletics programs in the nation, largely because of the revenue generated in football, so what’s another $200,000 per?

The biggest thing, those in the Richt camp say, is UGA is not going to find a better representative of the school nor one more committed to staying put and not shopping around for better deals. The Bulldogs should reward him for that philosophy and given him whatever he says he wants or needs within reason.

Now let’s be clear, I’m not saying I agree with all that. I’m just relaying some of the concerns I heard from some people close to the situation. Yes, Richt makes plenty of money, a king’s ransom for living in Athens, Ga. But those are some football-world realities being discussed in the coaching community today.

However, it’s the job of AD Damon Evans to try to keep things fair and in balance and he’s on record as saying he believes that’s the case with Richt’s new deal. And, lest we forget, everything could be renegotiated if the Dogs were to win a national title under Richt. Maybe that’s a carrot Evans want to continue to dangle.

So how do you guys feel? Not enough? Too much? Just right? Let’s hear what you think.

CMR is on track to be the greatest coach in UGA FB history and indeed is an amazing ambassador for the school. All he lacks on the resume thus far is a MNC. He’ll, as you suggest, get that compensation bump among his peers if he wins a national title.

Does everything have to be a competition with the fans? Do we have to be number 1 in everything? This is rediculous. I’m sure MR doesn’t care. I’m sure he feels more than well-compensated personally. I’m certain he’s more concerned with the needs of the program, the players and the assistants. Take care of the program first and the personal rewards will follow.

So where does all the money go? We are a top money maker…but our facilities are lacking, and our coach isn’t one of the better paid even in our conference alone…can someone explain? Why other schools that make less on football can afford to pay their coaches more and have indoor facilities as well? Doesn’t make sense!

I agree with going ahead to 3 but Chip, this “some people” business only serves to stir trouble. Get off the fence and state YOUR feelings without blaming it on Mr.& Mrs. Anonymous. If Richt is satisfied, why not the rest of us.

MR has yet to win the National Championship or to beat Florida, Auburn, and Tennessee in the same year. He has agreed to his contract so he must be happy with it…….for now. personally, I bet he can’t wait until the 2008 season is in the books. The Dawgs will hopefully have a ligitimate shot at the National Title at the end of the season and can anyone honestly say that if they do get to the big game, they won’t win it??? I know getting there is a long way away but I feel sorry for the other team they play if, sorry fans……WHEN, they make it.

If he wins the SEC and NC in the next two years I believe you’ll see CMR as one of the top 2 paid coaches in the land.

This raise left room for rework and if he keeps winning, it’ll be reworked.

Sad to say, but the fact that Richt is not prone to shop around for other jobs is part of the reason his salary is low (among elite coaches, that is). Same is true in all jobs. The only significant raises I’ve ever received were the result of either changing jobs, or using another job offer for leverage. Sad, but that’s the reality.

By JMar

March 7, 2008 2:30 PM | Link to this

You said it yourself: five SEC coaches have won national championships: Les Miles, Urban Meyer, Pumpkinhead, Spurrier, and Nick Saban. Tuberville had an undefeated season. He shouldn’t be getting paid more than those six coaches, and he is getting more than the underserveds like Bobby Petrino and the less successful coaches in the conference. Richt is right where he should be.

By Pitbull

March 7, 2008 2:37 PM | Link to this

CMR has a winning record against every team in the SEC except UF. He is 2-5 vs UF in 7 years; his 2 predecessors were 2-10 vs UF.

He has beat Tech for 7 straight years.

He has a 72 -19 record over a 7 year period.

He has 2 SEC championships, 3 Sugar Bowl appearances with 2 wins, 4 SEC East titles (played in 2 and tied for 2 we didn’t play in).

He is the best coach in the SEC and in the country. We are indeed blessed to have him. Tech people would pimp out their wives and girlfriends for a coach like him.

He is simply the best as a coach and as a person. I hope he is happy with his life, income and job at UGA and hope that he stays with us until he is Jo Pa’s age.

By aa

March 7, 2008 2:42 PM | Link to this

He’s not an elite coach, which is why he’s not paid more. If he wins big next year - after how many seasons at GA? - then start raising his salary to match those around the country who are in that top category. And keep raising his salary if he wins consistently over the next few years. It’s just that simple.

By timthebrave

March 7, 2008 2:42 PM | Link to this

When he wins a NC he will get the bump to 4 million. He is making enough money for what he has accomplished. If he wins SEC or NC in next couple of years they can rework his contract again

By wannabes

March 7, 2008 2:51 PM | Link to this

The fact that Tech would pimp out their wives, etc for a coach like Richt, doesn’t equate to being the best coach in the country. To put Richt in the same category as Carroll, Stoops, and even Urban is just plain stupid. This could be why the Dawgs don’t ever make it to the big time.

we have the worst athletic director in the country and he is only living on coach dooley’s reputation.

the facilities are not state of the art, we make more money than any school in the country. we have a coach who has the 4th highest win total in the country and we pay him only as the 5th highest income in the SEC.

georgia is playing with fire and if we have another great year the offers will be coming fast and furious that could BE INCLUDING an offer of 4mm-5mm and we think he will not be listening, coach richt is not a fool.

what a weak argument to say” well he has not won a national championship, but coach bobby petrino , the ole falcon coach and present arkansas coach is making as much if not more than coach richt. give me a break!

what a crime that is.

damon evans, what are you thinking, this is total stupidity to wait and let our coach have another great year, and risk the chance of losing him, instead of stepping with a package that addresses both the term and compensation that is equal to the top coaches in the SEC. WAKE UP BULLDOGNATION, MARK RICHT IS NOT A FOOL AND IF WE ARE NOT LOYAL TO HIM ; HE HAS EVERY RIGHT NOT TO BE LOYAL TO UGA!

This is the kind of story that is written when the writer is obligated to put in SOMETHING before a deadline and can’t think of anything substantive or actual. Heck, if making stuff up and asking open-ended questions is all there is to journalism then everyone who posts in this blog is eligible for a Pulitzer.

Come on, Chip, and admit when the writer’s block is acting up. Maybe you could donate your space to someone who has something to say. As it is, this is the news equivalent of standing in front of the post office at midnight on April 15, reporting that people are paying their taxes at the last minute. It’s a space-filler.

This is a business and Damon has treated it as such. He knows Athens is a desirable place to be for a head coach. If living in Athens is of value, why pay more in salary if you don’t have too? Mark has been paid to do a job. He is paid well and he has done well. Everybody wins. Kudos to Damon.

I know a lot of people will not like my comment but I do have my right to express. I think they, coaches and ball players are all overpaid.. They, coaches, are making over a million a year anyway and why is that not enough?? There are a lot of kids out here who would like to go to college but their parents can not afford to send them. It’s just not right,my opinion, that so much is paid to sport’s. Not just football, but basketball also. I think they could/should set up a fund for less fortunate kids who want to go to college and Pay/help pay and not give the coach money they could use more wisely. Like I said, this is my opinion.

Coach Mark Richt is more of a man than anyone of you. There is no price tag on a person who has more principal than anyone of us could imagin. We are more than lucky to have such a individual as a leader for our young kids at the University of Georgia let alone a football coach.

So the answer to the pathitic question is…NO

C’mon people…If it wasn’t what Richt wanted, why would he take it? If he is so great, why can he not demand more? Do we just give him the most because we all have man crushes on the guy? Seems to me like its a good deal all the way around. Alabama paid 4 mil and got 6-6…should we be that stupid? Florida pays more because their guy won it all in the CMR era…so did the LSU guy. Richt is a notch below Tubs who has a great record, won conference title, had an undefeated season, beat Florida in back to back years (Richt yet to do that one) and has beat his chief rival sixstraight times (Bama ai’t Tech) Maybe Evans should raise the ticket prices to the highest in the league to pay the total for the coach that all these people want…by the way he only raised ticket prices to the median level. And on the facility end…stop drinking the cool aid. We have everything we need to win, indoor practice does not equal national title…see Florida and USC. Nicer offices…has anyone been in Butts Mehre? How did we ever get Stafford and Moreno to Athens with crap we have?? I love our people…I do, but how many of you wanted to pay CMR more money than them all in Knoxville this year…its a game people. Oh yeah, CMR makes for than Fulmer now. The last two years Fulmer hung 55 on us and gave us the worst tailkicking I have seen a UGA team take since Spurrier laid the wood in Athens! We have a good coach who is highly paid….he got an 800K increase without winning a national, conference or division title. Now lets win the big one…not rebound from mid season butt kickings to make the season look good on paper. Like I said the staff is good, but where did 24 start last season on the depth chart? 3rd string…without injuries making the descion for him does Knowshon have that kind of year? Lets just be happy we got him…where’s he going anyway…!!!

Can’t we find something better to write about? How about some insight on the players? I agree with most of the posts here, Mark Richt is great. He is as deserving as the next, I wouldn’t trade him for another coach, even if he never wins a N.C. He has more class than probably 99% of the people on this planet, and he has won, alot! But, why do we have to spin this like he is being slighted because theres some coaches that make more. Let’s face it, the majority of us would be on cloud 9 if we made 10% of what any of the coaches or pro ball players make. So, it gripes my butt when it is written how any of these guys are underpaid. This is about like feeling sorry for Britney Spears because she has lost from 100 million down to 40 million. Give me a break!

Hold off on making him the Coach of the Universe. You can give him a raise every single year. You don’t have to do everything in one year. If he manages to win it all like every dog fan in the state thinks will happen, then give him another raise and build his little gym. If in fact the dogs lose 2 or 3 games like they probably will, then you won’t all have to come on the vent and complain that the AD gave him too much and zapped his motivation. Either way you’ll be disappointed next year.

Personally I don’t care what his salary is. As long as he’s comfortable with it, that should be all that matters. If he demanded more, I’m quite certain he’d get it. From what I see how he goes about things, he’s happy with being in Athens and would probably push for more pay for his assistants more so than his own contract. It’s not about his salary ranking in the SEC. When you base it on that, every SEC coach would be renewing their contracts every other year to get one up on the others, example - Tubberville / Wingnut.

Hello,

Coach Richt received a fantastic raise in appreciation for his continued excellent achievements in being the football coach of The University of Georgia. Now, the UGA AD, Damon Evans, needs to ensure that the athletic facilities are updated, the indoor practice facility is built, and that the assistant coaches are rewarded justly as well. Those are the priorities now. Go Dogs!!!

If Mark leaves the hedges it won’t be about a few thousand dollars to further pad his pockets. It will instead be about that indoor facility he can’t get. I have listened to the good man talk about his journey in life. Why do you push somones back to the wall unless your trying to push him away? Even a good Christian man can be alienated enough for a Miami or FSU to come calling and say we’ll make sure you have the facilities to make sure you’re as successful as you can be. I’ve seen the public records on how much the university has made off of the coach’s teams since he’s been there. It could be more painful for the program than to spend a few million dollars on facility upgrades. I ask do you really want Jim Donnan back or what? The sore is becoming infected, ignoring it won’t make it go away! I BEG THE POWERS THAT BE TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

I’m not talking about the year 2005 which has nothing to do with my statement. On both of Florida’s recent championships they were fortunate enough to get them with a loss. LSU had two losses last year(SAME AS GEORGIA) and still got to play for it all. If we had won either against Tennesse or South Carolina, or if Tennessee had been beaten by Kentucky or Vanderbilt we would have played LSU. Most of the experts (Including Mark Richt) said we would beat LSU and thus play Ohio State rather then Have LSU play them.

Petrino got paid the big bucks because Arkansas knew that was the only way they could get someone they felt was a quality Coach to come in and take over their 2nd teir losing team.

Saban got the big bucks because everyone else they have had couldn’t see the sunlight because of Bear’s shadow.

Those schools had to overpay to get what they felt they needed to compete in the toughest conference in football.

CMR would be a fool to consider going somewhere else and starting over after what he has finally built here and is now going to be able to harvest the fruit of. The money is more than he dreamed it would be when he was at FSU and when he is able to produce the kind of seasons he has prepared for, he will be vastly rewarded for it. Paying him Saban or Petrino money is not necessary. Those programs were in panic mode. I don’t want a new Coach at UGA, but if its all about money, I guarantee you there are some top notch guys that would give their left nut to trade places with him for far less money.

The thing is… Richt is happy as a pig eating sh!t, its dumbass fans and the media who are making a problem out of it.

OUTRAGEOUS! Fifth, soon to be sixth with the best team in the nation! He should be paid $5,000,000. I only partially gest. The program he runs in the most profitable atheletic department in the nation (or close to #1), should be paid much more. I think he should be in the top 5 in the nation. If you want to keep him at UGA, you need to do more. Give him a $1M raise, or the indoor training facilities he wants. Both, or at least either, are required to be on par with most of the upper level programs in the nation. This, coming from a Georgia Tech fan.

With CPJ’s style of the spread offense coupled with the defense we are bringing back this year it should prove to be a very humbling game for the flea bags. Stop doting over UGA so much lest you be deemed a douchebag when the leaves begin to turn color this year!! GT will be ACC Champions - BANK ON IT!!!!!

Coach Richt has character and has everything he needs being that he’s a simple man. He’s not the type of person that would even think of trying to renegotiate his contract for a higher salary. All he’s asking for is an indoor practice facility. Anything more than that will go to charity or maybe even take the entire team to South America for a missionary trip…something that he wanted to do since 2005. As he’s always said, he’s “blessed” to even have this opportunity. With that said, I think he deserves the raise for getting the Bulldogs to an 11-2 season and Sugar Bowl. I believe once he brings a NC to Athens, he deserves an even bigger raise. So keep the money coming because it will be used wisely by a wise man. Is he underpaid? No he’s not. You reward your men each time they accomplish an even bigger goal. This is unlike most coaches that jump from team to team, college to NFL and back just to get a big raise and was still the same person whey they left the league (sound familiar?). Anyways, I am glad we have Coach Mark Richt in Athens…and I always felt the same even during the “down years”.

Forget what we make this is SEC football. His salary is certainly low in comparison to other teams across the conference, and country. Men with much less dignity, like Bobby Petrino, make more than MR.
As far as the facilities, or lack there of, it’s a reminder that even college football is a business, and that greed at the corporate level extends into our colleges.
UGA posted a larger profit, from their football, than any other school in the country. Nearly $30,000,000!!!!
So for the record, the lack of investment in the coaching staff is understandable, but not funding investing in your own program (ie: new practice facility, training facility, etc. etc) is a shame. Shame on UGA.
Year after year, we watch other teams grab high profile prospects, and it’s not because of our coaching staff. It’s our lack of program funding. Our percentage of funding is less than most teams, including Georgia Tech who posted a $1.5 million profit….

All of this makes me a little nervous about the AD and program. First, we don’t put Dooley’s name on the field or the stadium….then we don’t take Richt higher than midpoint in the conference, and then we don’t build an indoor facility that the coach says we not only need….but we have to have. And add to this that the Univ. failed to put a buy-out clause in Richt’s contract similar to other coaches, so the Michigans and Notre Dames and Southern Cals and Texans of this world can’t/won’t court our coach and try to buy him away leaving us holding the bag? All of this in a year when we will be pre-season top three, depending on the poll. Do we think Florida or LSU will wait for us to catch up? Or Ohio State or Southern Cal? Heck, even Auburn has an indoor practice facility in their plans. Unfortunately, the gap will continue to widen until someone does a “stop-gap”. Who wants to look back next year, after the season, and say what we should have done now, but didn’t.

WJ and you other supoosed guru’s

1)Don’t kid yourself…Southern Cal, Texas, Ohio State won’t come calling…your boy has never won the big one.

2)Faciltities - I read you are expanding the wight room, training room and coaches offices. How big of an office do you need. Oh and guess what Florida and Southern Cal don’t have indoor places. I think they have won a titles.

3) Profit….maybe your school needs the profits because your legend who campaigns for his name to be on stadium did not do much to keep the cofers full. At least your new AD doesn’t need a nap every afternoon and is seldom seen pimping storm doors and his own books…geesh

4) Richt as a negotiator. Good gracious… his name is never mentioned with anything…plus he tells everyone he is happy at UGA. If a coach is happy and makes it known he is not going anywhere, way pay more than market scale!

5) Big games… How many has Richt won? 2005 SEC Title game…that was a big win. 2002 SEC Title Game…yawner against Arkansas. BCS Bowls…beat a second rate FSU in 02, lost to WVU in 05 and played a joke of a team in Hawaii. His teams play great without pressure…see every game after the UT a$$ kicking.

6) Man of the People…Yes..those that don’t give big bucks love him. Those that do must not. If the big money people thought the indoor thing was a big deal, I am sure Richt could ask and he would receive. Haven’t seen any big donors step up to the plate to build what he wants….makes ya wonder.

7) Insecure Georgia fans. You recruit well every year…hell you got the two best players in the league in Stafford and Moreno and Caleb King could be better than Moreno…but still you think you don’t have enough to attract the better players. I can see your point when you superuir talent flopped against the likes of USC and UT. You want to pay Richt big bucks and looks like he did not even have his own team figured out last year until 6 games into the season!

But heck what do I know…I am only a realistic Auburn fan…Beat Bama

I think all this “Richt should be paid higher” and all this other stuff is getting way overrated. First of all, let me clear myself when saying Richt is an excellant football coach and I think he represents our University better then any coach in America. Now I wouldn’t mind seeing his salary go to 3 mill, but 2.8 million is not bad. And the thing I think we have working in our favor is Richt’s attitude and beliefs. I think he really loves Athens and will stay there until Georgia thinks it is time. Richt has strong Christian beliefs that he follows and has great morals that you can’t find any coaches today. I don’t thin he is the type of coach to go around hunting for jobs because “there is more money.” Richt is a great football coach and I think the University will find a way to say the least, to keep him happy and satisfied.

By Will

March 7, 2008 8:56 PM | Link to this

Richt’s salary is quite good. First, to insist that it be raised even higher only contributes to the senseless arms race going on in college football right now. Second, why is being tied with a football school like Auburn a bad thing? Tuberville, too, is an excellent coach. Besides, all four SEC coaches above Richt and Tuberville have shown their backsides. Money doesn’t equal class.

Is there a full moon tonight or maybe it’s just ‘idiot night’..

CMR is the perfect coach for Georgia.

For you knuckle heads who want to bring up the Tennessee game. You show your ignorance of the game.

In the SEC, the record after bye weeks was something like 8-2 (Alabama/LSU played each other). The two losses were Arkansas to Alabama (very early game) and South Carolina to Clemson.

Georgia was playing their 5th game in a row. Tennessee played Arkansas State two weeks before and then had an off week. The Knoxville paper ran a story ‘right before the game’ that if the Vols lost to Georgia - that there would be a coaching change. On that day we were beaten by a well rested, highly motivated and very talented Tennessee team. “WE HAVEN’T LOST SINCE”!!!!!!!!!

You should also know that CMR is uncomfortable with all of the money. He loves Athens. His entire family has moved there. I mean his Mom, his Dad, his sister. He’s happy….

And the Georiga Alumni and Fan base should be thrilled. If your not - your either stupid, unappreciated or both!

Georgia Tech former golfer John Henry Eisenhour III now has been charged with several counts of cruelty to animals and killing a PROTECTED red-shouldered HAWK.

“He drove closer to the bird in his golf cart and started hitting balls at it. Isenhour started again when the hawk moved within about 75 yards, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer Brian Baine indicated in a report.”

Isenhour allegedly said, ” I’ll get him now ,” and aimed for the hawk.

“About the sixth ball came very near the bird’s head, and (Isenhour) was very excited that it was so close ,” Baine wrote.

“A few shots later, witnesses said he hit the hawk. The bird, protected as a migratory species, fell to the ground bleeding from both nostrils.”

“Bartlett said Isenhour’s case, like the Michael Vick dog fighting case, is disappointing for society.

“We look up to professional athletes and we want them to reflect the best of us as a society and I think we’re appalled when it turns out they instead reflect some of the very worst attributes ,” he said in a phone interview Thursday night.

Americans have no tolerance for cruelty to animals. Such a petty, mean-spirited act against a wild bird is inexcusable and prosecutors are right to hold Isenhour accountable to the law,” Humane Society executive vice president Michael Markarian said in a statement released Thursday March 6, 2008.

Both charges against Tripp Isenhour are misdemeanors that carry a maximum penalty of 14 months in jail and $1,500 in fines.

Coach Richt doesn’t strike me as being solely motivated by money. Dangling a $200K carrot for a national championship won’t make him focus more, try harder or be more creative. He should be fairly compensated in relation to his peers, but the kind of effort it takes to win comes from having heart, not money.

The bottom line is “Do we believe Mark Richt or not?” He has not voiced any discontent about his position or compensation package. He has said, again and again, that he wants to be at UGA as long as the school will have him. And is it really necessary to be the school that has the highest compensation pkg for its coaches? Let’s face it, coaching at UGA is a bargan for the coaches. What more could one ask for? Facilities, commitment, recruiting base and tradition. It just doesn’t get any better. And as coach Richt continues to build on what he has started the University will show its appreciation accordingly. Count on it.

DE is smart to do this as it leaves room for more depending on what happens next year. Additionionally, football makes the money but they are running this like a business and just spent a ton on new facilities next to the gym. That was a major project needed for the entire sports program. When you are running this type of program you have to prioritize and I would guess that an indoor practice facility would / should be one of the next things on the list - at least within the next three years. Remember they have other sports and coaches wants, needs and requests to consider and can’t just jump when MR askes for something. The man is overpaid for what he’s been able to accomplish. Mickey and Pluto could win 8 games a year at Georgia with the resources available. While he’s had all these wonderful accomplishments, there have been 3 National Championships come from the SEC. He’s really average with his peers in the conference so he’s still below the more accomplished coaches in pay. Right where he should be. If there is to be more money spent with all the revenue coming in I think the fans should demand that a new basketball facility be built so that a decent coach will come to Athens. It shouldn’t be just about the football program. At least it’s not that way at the elite schools of the SEC. Until something is done about the basketball program, Georgia is nothing more than a new milennium plantation for the red neck fans. 75% of which the only time they’ve ever stepped foot inside an education building in Athens is to relieve themselves from their drunken tailgate before a game on Saturday in the fall. Georgia fans ignorant arrogance is an embarrassment not only to the State of Georgia but to humankind.

In all fainess, Mickey does that that magic flying bag of tools, so yea, he should be able to win 8 games. Pluto can’t even talk…come on, get real.

As a lsu fan i think mark is a very fine coach. but i must say i don’t think he can win the big game every year he get’ts the best players but comes up short. this year uga is picked to win it all, my guess he will lose two games and remember ga must play us in baton rouge we will not roll over for the dawgs

Hey Gerry, I’d rather go 10-2 with CMR than win the big one with your fool. This is college football not the NFL.

Winning it all must have been fun, but are you really proud of your coach. How does it feel to know your coach really loves another school?

Anyway- good job tigers for taking care of Ohio State.

Fecil: This was a blog topic, not a story. If you don’t know the difference then I can’t help you.

Pitbull and BuLLdawg, if you are indeed two different people: I don’t know how you conclude that the AJC (aka, me) is creating controversy here or even displaying an editorial position. As a beat guy — this is the beat blog, after all — I was merely relaying some sentiments I had encountered. The reality is agents and people in the coaching business that command the kind of money that people like Richt do aren’t sure he got what he deserved. I didn’t say if he did or didn’t. It’s certainly not up to me. I just threw it out there for discussion. The great majority here seem to understand that concept.

Where do his assistants rank in pay? I think CMR, although a great coach, needs to keep Coach Garner, Bobo, Searels and Martinez in order to be successful. IMO, as long as his assistants are among the highest paid and we continue to upgrade facilities to keep pace, I don’t mind CMR being on the high end of the middle of the pack until he wins a national championship… in other words, until next year. GO DAWGS!

TO GLORYGLORY,DAMAN EVANS is only following the business model that coach dooley establish some time ago.

he has done nothing since he has been AD.

now, we have a major problem if richt has another BANNER year making what he is today, only fifth in the SEC IN TOTAL PAY!

WHAT DO YOU THINK COACH RICHT will do IF HE IS OFFERED $4-5MM NEXT YEAR.

HE WILL BE LONG GONE OR HE IS STUPID TO STAY.HE IS GOING TO tAKE CARE OF HIS FIRST RESPONSIBLITY AND THAT IS HIS FAMILY.

FURTHER, IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW MUCH HE IS BEING PAID,WHAT DOES MATTER IS DETERMINE By THE MARKET AND WHAT PEOPLE THINK ON THIS BOARD does not matter.

I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISE IF HE GOES TO THE NFL WHERE HE COULD MAKE $5-6MM A YEAR. DAMON, I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU DID NOT STEPUP TO THE PLATE ON THIS ONE,but that is your MO so far.

Hop, please don’t try to speak for Coach Richt as to what he believes is best for his family.

By oldgold

March 9, 2008 9:48 PM | Link to this

Richt has to get his team ready with- out an indoor practice stadium, he has to decide what colors the fans must wear, he has to always have a handfull of bail money and he has to convince all of the players that they will get an NFL contract. I’d say he earns every cent.

altamaradawg, if you do not think coach richt’s first responsibility is not to his family, than you don’t know much about coach richt.

georgia had a chance to step-up and they did not. don’t blame me with your lame post. you should direct your anger at our do nothing AD mr. evans.

we do not have adequate football facilites that richt continues to bring out, but mr.evans has not delivered.

coach richt is the 4th winningest coach in the nation and he is only the five hightest paid coach in SEC. WHAT A JOKE THAT IS!

many NFL insiders have encourage HIM, including hall of famer terry bradshaw to coach in the nfl, because he has the right temperment.terry stated this on fox tv.

the bulldognation does not appear to fully appreciate what they have and think his good nature will keep him at uga forever. there is an old adage,”b****** walks and money talks”, i don’t care who you are.

Chip, once again, stupid media stirring up something that doesn’t even exist. Richt said he was “humbled by the raise”. As we all know CMR, he is not a guy to lie about something about this. Chip, you are going to take something that an extremist would say, and make an article about it! What a joke! Of course he is behind Saban, Meyer, Fulmer, Spurrier, etc. They have NC rings! CMR is one thing away from being paid more than all of them, and that is a National Championship. All UGA is doing is letting him know that he is wanted, and if he wins the NC, believe me, he will be compensated!

I wonder where CMR’s salary stands as far as College coaches who have not won a NC in the last 10-12 years?

Probably pretty good!

Hop, not surprisingly, you totally missed the point. First of all, I am not “directing any anger”. I am pointing out how I think you are incorrect. I’ll leave the anger to you, you seem to have an abundance. And YES, he would do anything to take care of his family. I have meet the man a couple of times and followed him pretty darn close, and I do not believe that taking an NFL job for more money is his idea of taking care of his family.

I don’t think that NFL owner’s would wait till he had one more good year. It seems silly to believe his stock as an NFL coach is going to hinge on the outcome of his 8th year, and not his 7th, or his 5th for that matter. I would think they already know if he was interested or not and would have surely already offered him the big bucks. Who is to say this is the last raise the man gets at UGA anyway? NO, this wasn’t the defining moment in his UGA career.

Oh, and I think the chances that we have the actual “worst AD in the country” are pretty slim to say the least.

By KCL

March 10, 2008 8:04 AM | Link to this

Chip, why don’t you dig a little and find out how our assistants compare to others. Maybe what type of raises they got (doesn’t have to be actual dollars), if any and then see what folks think of that. If my guess is correct MR is trying to take care of those people too so that they stay - and he can stay. Look at the example coach Bobby has set in this area. The smartest coaches and schools take care of those well as they do the lions share of the work anyway. Go Dawgs!

No it’s not enough. He’s the best coach in the SEC and he isn’t paid like it. Who gives a rip if the coaches ahead of him in pay won National Titles years ago.

$2.8 million is enough for anyone, including Bear Bryant, the best coach who ever lived. Better hope that the PLAYERS never realize how badly they are being ripped off (except for the select few who go onto bib $$$ in the NFL.)

By P Dawg

March 10, 2008 11:40 AM | Link to this

I don’t think it would be very smart on CMR’s part to even entertain an NFL offer because college coaches typically don’t do well at that level. Look at Saban and Spurrier, just to name a couple. He might make double the money for 2 or 3 years, but then what. He would regret leaving a situation like UGA eventually. I know I’m biased as a UGA fan but there aren’t many college programs better than UGA football. He WILL win a NC soon and the university WILL make him the highest paid coach in the SEC and the country. I do think that Chip was on target with that dangling carrot.

By P Dawg

March 10, 2008 11:42 AM | Link to this

I think that being paid along the same limes as Tubberville is pretty much fair because Auburn should have and would have won the NC if they hadn’t gotten screwed by the BCS when they went undefeated a few years ago.

I think history will show that if a coach has aspiration to go to the NFL, money is usually only one of the factors, IMO not the prime reason. And IF you were to lose a coach for strickly money, Id say that is a no-win battle.

no altamaha, your the one who does not a have a clue and totally missed the points! your pointing the finger at me for saying ” i was speaking for caoch richt”.that is a statement without any merit and seem to upset you.

you need to settle down and stop being a policeman on this web site.

also, i have met coach richt as well in a private office in north atlanta had a 30 minute conversation along with one georgia’s great players of the past. we also several times since then. please don’t be a name dropper because two can play that game.

as far damon evans is concern he has dropped the ball on this issue and many others and you would be better served to do some homework before you may the mindless comments and homely support continues for this guy.

i do believe i would accept terry bradshaw’s view of coach richt’s ability to be successful at the next level than yours. so far i don’t see much credibility from your post to think otherwise.

richt is an outstanding person and coach and is one of the few college coaches who could be very succesfull at the next level. so to my point once again that you seem to continually overlook, damon evans had a chance to commit this great coach to a long term contract and he did not. georgia and mr. evans may later on regret it. i know it does not. p.s. please do not speak for what is best for coach richt and his family. i think he is capable of doing that. did you ever hear of jimmie johnson? i think he was able to be successful in both college and pros.

Georgia is the most fortunate team in the nation to have CMR. No he hasn’t won a NC but yr after yr he puts a team on the field that competes for the SEC championship. IMO the SEC is harder to win than the NC. The NFL would be in trouble or need minor league teams to prepare for the NFL if it wasn’t for the SEC. Sure Ohio State, OSU, Michigan, USC, etc. contribute. I’d just like for them to play an SEC schedule 1 yr. I think all knowledgable fans will agree, they wouldn’t finish in the top 10. Wake up Adams, Richt is the only reason you have any kind of status or job!
