UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Daily dose of football coming

We know, we know. For the hardcore college football enthusiast — and there is a lot of you out there — this is the worst time of year. There’s just not enough information out there to satisfy your hearty appetites for all things football. Well, we’re here to help.

Starting this week, we’re going to see that you get some kind of college football fix every day, both UGA and otherwise. Tony Barnhart, aka Mr. College Football, will tell you what’s going on around the South and in the nation. And Carter Strickland and I will make sure you know what’s going on in Athens with the Bulldogs.

The idea is, when you log on to your computer at home or at work first thing every weekday morning, you’ll find some football nuggets to munch on. Meanwhile, I’ll still be posting blog topics regularly in this space.

So Carter will have something up today about the realistic impact of this year’s recruiting class. I’ll have something for you on Tuesday, and so on.

In the meantime we’ll need your help to make sure we’re giving you what you want. Let us know some of the things you’d like to read about regarding Georgia football.

See you back here daily.

I’d like to see a little more info about the realistic scenarios for the “Athletes.” Also, given UGA’s tough schedule for ‘08, is that solely based on last year performances for those teams? What are the likely strength/weakness matchups between UGA and each of their opponents. Also would like to be kept informed of any significant events that have the potential of affecting the game, regarding the ‘08 opponents. What’s the top ten areas that need improvement for UGA. Those’ll do for starters.

I live in LA, and out here there are daily reports on the football team. They constantly provide video coverage of the atheletes in the weight room, on the practice fields, passing sessions, and various other periods that show the team bonding or messing around with each other. I would be elated to see what our Dawgs look like on a weekly basis. Who looks in shape, who looks ripped, who has the most dynamic personality, etc. WE NEED SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO SATISFY OUR HUNGER!!!!! A video or pictures are worth a thousand words.

A moment of silence, please, for one of the greatest Bulldogs of all time. Lamar “Racehorse” Davis, who starred on Georgia’s great teams of the early 1940s along with Sinkwich and Trippi, passed away over the weekend in his hometown of St. Simons. He was 86… .

As for your inquiries:

John: Funny you should mention mat drills. I will have an update posted very early Tuesday morning on that… .

ColoradoDawg: The fact of the matter is, other than the four already enrolled at Georgia, none of the freshmen are academically eligible. All must graduate from high school, pass all portions of the high school graduation test (if they’re from the state of Georgia) and have until the end of summer to meet their standardized tests requirements. Let’s just let them do what they have to do between now and then and we’ll see how it turned out… .

Drago: I, for one, think you’re going to see a lot out of Demiko Goodman this season. Don’t be surprised if fellow senior Kenneth Harris steps up either… .

Shane#1: BuLLdawg DID have me spooked for a while but I think I’m recovered now… . As for Southerland, he’s the kind of player UGA simply wanted to get rested and healed up before next season. I’ll set out to get you an update on him and other injured Dogs before the week’s out… .

dcdawg: I, too, was surprised Velasco didn’t get serious consideration to join the combine. I’m sure he’s generating some good free-agent buzz, however… . Not sure about Coutu and the combine but it’s not generally a big deal for kickers. Brandon has very much caught the eye of scouts and he’ll get an opportunity somewhere… .

BeauDawg: We’ll have to wait until they get on the field for spring practice to start making any real comparisons between Caleb and Knowshon. I will say that I saw them both when I stopped in on a weightroom workout this week and they both look ready for battle right now. Moreno is a beast in that regard.

CHIP,

1)——- You have more access to coaches and players than the rest of us, and they are more inclined to give you more meaningful news regarding the team. So anything relating to the 2-deep, injuries, or any praises during spring ball would be great.

2)——- As mentioned in #1, the most important thing i would like to read about is the development of the depth chart— particularly with deep positions like WR, CB, DE, and possible replacements for Mikey as a PR.

Regarding #2, I think we’ll see MO-Mass and mike Moore see the most time, with Durham locking down the slot early in the season. After that, it’s all about who steps up during game time in the fall.

what do you guys think?

overrated, uga is rated so high because they finished with seven wins, six over teams with winning records.uga just nudged vandy, and tech was a battle,as usual, but most of these wins were double digit margins.this was with three freshmen on the o line,a sophmore qb,freshman rb,all new starters at lb,and a rebuilt secondary.three first time starters on the d line,a new oc,and new o line coach round out the picture.the pundits think that with 17 starters returning, who will be bigger, stronger, and more experenced,a top recruiting class, and coachs with a year of working together under their belt, the dogs will be BETTER in 2008 than they were in 2007.there will be 14 players coming off red shirt this year, the competition for slots on the two deep chart will be fierce.

Gen. what up in Vols country? Auburn started spring practice yesterday, otherwise, not much. Bama has struck again with their criminal program. The Vols had a few finger prints taken, but felonies, unreal. What about QB situation at Tenn, who will be back-up? Auburn - Tenn will knock each other around for next two years. Auburn should be win it all in 2009, if UGA does not go wild and win them all. By Chip Towers

February 26, 2008 8:47 PM | Link to this

SamoanDawg: The fact of the matter is there is not much to report regarding the progression of the O-line other than they are working out really hard. As Van Halanger reported Kiante Tripp is standing out in mat drills but he did not single out another O-lineman. Coach Van did say a lot of those guys were “transforming their bodies” and “doing what it takes to become champions.” But that’s kind of strength-coach speak, so take from it what you wish.

UT and Auburn have had some memorable matchups. One that comes to my aging mind is from back in 80-81 or so. Bill Battle was UT’s HC…It was a driving rain of tropical proportions that day. ( I think the game was played at Auburn ) By the fourth quarter, nobody was moving the ball in that slop. UT had the lead. AU would go 4 and out, punt…Battle had his return guy fair catch or hands off, then send the punt team in on 1st down to kick it back. This scenerio went on till games end…UT held off AU by playing D in the muck. Jordan was none too happy with Battle’s tactics afterwards…

Not much on spring ball at this time…

DC,

I saw that Marcus Howard ran a 4.45??? Is that correct? Did the DE run faster than Kregg Lumpkin?

He had a pretty productive senior year and with so many NFL teams playing a 3-4 now… one would think that he will move up the draft charts with that time. He posted a faster time than many top rated WR’s and outran every LB.

Does anyone think he might move up into the 2nd or 3rd round?

Over-rated:

Actually, it is very simple:

UGA finished #2 in the country with one of the nation’s longest winning streaks in what is universally regarded as the toughest conference.

UGA will be ranked in everybody’s top 3 for NEXT season because of THAT performance combined with 17 of 22 starters returning… and having one of the nation’s best recruiting classes in 07 as well as 08.

To put it more succinctly… UGA was one of the best teams from 07, returns a lot of players in 08 AND also will add some of the best players in 08, therefore, they will be ranked near the top of the heap for the pre-season 08.

How about some stats on how some of the Dawgs did at the combine. I saw on ESPN where Marcus Howard ran a 4.47 40 yard dash. Why was this guy not playing LB for the Dawgs? Sounds like Brandon Miller and Marcus Howard would both have been better prepared for life at the next level if they would have flipped positions say some time in 2004.

By shane #1

out of touch, scott left the team, lack of playing time, according to some.john, miller was needed at linebacker untill curren took off.then he was switched to end.howard led the team in sacks,if you watched him against uf and uh you know why he never switched posistions.the nfl is a different game,he is too small to be a traditional nfl de.lbs that can line up as ends are popular in the 3-4 defenses, maybe he can find a home with one of those teams.

outoftouch,no problem,i said according to some.i have heard rumors of something happening off field, but i don’t know if they are true so i am not repeating them.you are right about the o line.did you read carter’s blog about the depth chart?it’s nice to be worrying about finding enough slots for your guys instead of worrying about having a man to fill the slot, like in 2006.at one time we were down to 6 scholarship o linemen.there was even talk of tripp chandler playing an o line spot if necessary!richt took a lot of heat last year.we forget that he had a patched together line,a true freshman qb,and that t brown and bailey were both out with injurys.he got his team going and finished the year by beating three ranked teams in a row.then this season he finished with seven wins in a row and a number two ranking with a rebuilt team.it’s funny that sometimes a mans best coaching job goes is overlooked for ls and ws.

By SamoanDawg

February 28, 2008 10:24 PM | Link to this

Somebody can correct me on this, I remember a little piece of what transpired then, for the reason why Marcus Howard was moved to DE, because Marcus and Van Gorder never sparked chemistry. He didn’t quite fit what Gorder was getting out of him. So, coach Fab stepped in and said, heck, I’ll take him. And then we all know and happy what the outcome was for Marcus in his senior season. I hope he’ll do well in the pro.

So, who’s next to provide pressure from the edge? Last season, almost every writer and some of the dawg fans questioned the DE position because of huge loss of BigBully/QMoses and the same when Pollack left. To be honest, I have never worried about the DE, b/c we always have great ones waiting in the wing for their turn. This year it’ll be, Rodderick Battle, Jarius Wynn and Jeremy Lomax(J-Lo) getting most of the reps. DeMarcus Dobbs/Michael Lemon should be able to see a lot of actions in the rotation. IMHO, I think coach Fabris is one of THE most underrated coach in the country. He gets a lot out of his DE guys every season. I hope he stays with us for as long as he wants to.

samoan, imo, when the lbs gelled, uga was able to turn howard loose to get after the qb.remember how he was able to step it up in the second half of the season?i think wood will be in the mix.trying to make a dt out of him didn’t work so he has dropped his weight down to 270 and he has run a 4.66 40 at 265.wood has a badly pulled hammy so will miss spring practice, hopefully he will be able to get some reps in the fall.coach fab has done some amazing things, taking a converted fullback{pollard},lb{howard},and wr{ball}and making legimate des out of them.i am anxious to see what he can do with wood and toby jackson,REAL linemen.
