UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

How do Dogs’ fans feel about TE defector?

Well, the other shoe dropped. Dwayne Allen, this year’s Mr. Fickle, decided to sign with Clemson after re-committing to the Georgia team he originally committed to in December of 2006.

It happens every year. There’s always one or two guys (and I’m just talking about Georgia) who get totally confused and overwhelmed with the recruiting process and end up changing their minds at the last second. It just reinforces what I’m always saying about following the whims of 17- and 18-year-olds. Why anybody bothered to attend Mr. Allen’s “press conference” on Monday in North Carolina is beyond me. Total waste of time. Unless these kids are signing a letter-of-intent it’s just shadow-dancing.

The biggest problem I have with Allen’s decision is the way he handled it. Had he said “Clemson” on Monday like a lot of people expected him he would, the Bulldogs could have moved on and gone in another direction. But to do it on national signing day leaves them in a bind. Remember, Georgia did not offer several high-profile prospects because it had committed all its scholarships.

All that said, the Bulldogs will be all right. Last time I checked they’re in pretty good shape at tight end. They weren’t counting on Allen’s contribution for a couple of seasons at least. Sure, he could turn out to be the next Randy McMichael. But it’s not going to derail what Georgia has going on in the meantime.

So I’m curious to hear from you Dogs fans about this. Are you angry with Allen or are you understanding of the confusion that clouded his young mind? Will you wish Allen luck and root for him as he moves on to Clemson and the ACC? Or do you hope he’s a major bust since he didn’t come to Athens?

Meanwhile, word is that Georgia more than likely will sit on that last scholarship and carry it on over to next season, since it has so few to offer then. There was some scuttlebutt about the linemen Massie or Love coming but I don’t see that happening. But who knows? This is recruiting. Anything can happen.

Allen as well as some of these other kids are nothing but drama queens. Make up your mind, stick to your word, thats the way I was brought up. UGA will be fine without him, we are loaded at the TE position. Good luck at Clemson….I hope you grown up!

Allen…hey best wishes. I prefer that the recruit be fuly committed. Better today than next year after having burnt a scholly he gets depressed because he is fourth or less on the depth chart and asks for a release. Chip, I would prefer that you correct Mr. Sensationalism (Jeff D’) about writing that this is the “Biggest National Shocker” comeon that is going over the top!

Defections like this only bother me because the commitment ties up an offer that could have been given to someone else. It seems to me from everything that I have read that Hunter, Sanders and Lipscomb were all very interested in UGA had a scholarship been available. UGA and Coach Richt, based on the verbal commitment from Allen, thought there were none available. Now, in the last minute, there is and picking up any of those three is now out of the question.

I don’t hope that he’s a bust but generally speaking, players with zero integrity and credibility aren’t as likely to be successful. They’d much rather take the easy route through life and follow whatever path is most convenient for them at the time regardless of the consequences.

If Dwayne Allen doesen’t want to be in Athens then we don’t want him. I have to say he is a nice guy though. I talked to him at the Troy game and I was impressed with how friendly and well spoken he was. I have no ill feelings for the guy just wish he would have freed up that scholarship for us earlier. I’m just asking the question and not being a smart guy. Have you ever been in the position that Dwayne has been in before? I was a part of a recruiting process years ago and I’m telling ya man, it’s not an easy thing to do for a 17-18 year old. It’s probably the toughest decision he ever had to make in his young life. Let’s cut these guys some slack.

Dawg19 hits the nail on the head. I can promise you Georgia would have inked one of those other guys had Allen made his mind up earlier… . But it’s not like the Dogs didn’t see it coming. I ran into Rodney Garner in the Athens Publix this past Sunday night and I asked him about Allen. He said, “he’s the only one I’m worried about.” So Georgia must have thought he was worth the fuss because it has been there M.O. to move on past wishy-washy recruits.

This JUST in!!!! Dwayne Allen has yet again changed his mind. He was able to put his fax machine in reverse, and take back his letter of intent to Clemson! He’s now decided to sign with UGA!! Kidding, of course. We don’t need this drama queen anyway. The guy holds a press conference at his school, and doesn’t even sign with the team that he said he would at the press conference. Gimme a break….whatever dude.

Allen showed no class in doing this the way he did. It just goes to show you how ridiculous the whole recruiting mess has become. More and more, these kids are playing games. They get so much attention and some of them jerk everyone around. If we didn’t pay so much attention, perhaps they would come to a decision quicker.

The bottom line is that following recruiting should be nothing more than an interesting sideline…people should not be paying money to do it. We shouldn’t be cursing these immature kids for what they do. We give them the power to do what they do by being so fanatical about recruiting.

Folks just need to chill out about recruiting. Stop giving Rivals and Scout and other recruiting services our money and stop treating children’s recruiting decisions as if they are the end of the world. Stop watching their silly press conferences. Stop sending hoardes of media to hang on their every word. Maybe then there will be some sanity to this whole process.

We didn’t really need allen anyway. By him waiting this long, he cost us a chance at Zebrie Sanders or Omar Hunter. So I wish he would of said Clemson on monday and we could of filled the spot with someone else. I don’t want to use it for Bobby Massie since he has to go to prep school.

It’s not like Allen was going to start next year for the Dawgs anyways. Look at his size. He’s a tweener and he’ll get slapped around in the O-Line with his small size at 220 lbs and doesn’t have enough speed to be a Split-end with a 4.7 40-yard dash. The only thing we lost with him defecting is a Tight End on the second team offense that the first team defense can practice against. He knew he wouldn’t start for the Dawgs. As a matter of fact, that scholarship can now be offered to someone who we truly need this year or save it for next year. Smart move for him but no loss for Georgia.

With the tight ends we have, I can’t understand why we offered him anyway????

BTW: Good reason why signing day should be moved up to November. A primary reason is, more and more, high school football players are “de-committing” and making last-minute reversals to sign with bigger schools that have lost their recruits (usually to academic failures) just before signing day.

Like most, I am irritated at the way he handled it. He should have said Clemson on Monday. Beyond that, I don’t care what happens to him at Clemson. He can’t help us, so it doesn’t matter. As far as us, I sincerely doubt one TE is going to have that much of an impact on how we do in the coming years.

It really seems like a good idea to hold the “Allen” ‘ship until next year. Next year’s recruiting class is tiny, and if UGA has a hot run in 2008 then people will be beating down the door to get in. Was it Little that we signed last year at the last minute — we were coming off a not-bad-but-not-great year and we were desperate for OL athletes. Seems like we would have been better off if we had let that ‘ship ride until this year, but hindsight is 20-20.

I personally think Allen is a worthless piece of trash. All this crap about he’s just a kid is rediculous he’s 18 years old that’s a legal adult who should have enough morals to do the right thing..I have no problem with him not coming to georgia but don’t handle is like low life trash who doesn’t have the guts to address the issue and be honest….I hope his career is a flop!!!!!

I’d be less concerned if we’d over commit by a slot or two, just in case. Anyone know of a season in recent history where we didn’t lose at least someone to either last minute changes, or some type of issue before we could get them into school? I’m not saying we overbook 5 ships like others do, but one, two, we should be able to do that will little to no risk.

Commitment = “the act of binding yourself to a course of action.” Hmmmm…….., sounds like somebody needs a refresher course in integrity.

If the kid wants to waste four years of his life plodding around for 3rd or 4th place in the ACC with or without Tommy Bowden (will he be fired at year’s end is the annual question over there), then so be it. But, to handle it like he did, young or not, is irresponsible and unfair to UGA and all those kids (e.g. Hunter, Sanders, Lipscomb) that were turned away because UGA honored its commitment to Dwayne Allen. A man’s word is his bond, and Dwayne Allen’s word is worth ZERO.

He and Clemson deserve each other.

No doubt he handled the situation as you would expect an 18 year old would. Granted it is a tough decsion, however waiting until the utmost last moment does speak volumes for your character. With that said, I am sure the coaches at Clemson wasted no time telling him that Harper had already signed as well as another great lineman. I think Georgia will be fine, we are a TE factory after all. I would have like to have seen another 5 star in place of him but whose to say those stars mean anything, look at Pollack, he was a 2 star…

No great loss but obviously his high school coach had no influence with him. Somebody in the know needed to tell this kid how to handle this, wherever he signed. No trust or communication there. Is this coach the great Daniel Inman’s daddy?

This may be a dissapointment, but remember this an 18 year old kid, so let’s wish him well and move on.After all, we are not hurting at that position, and can use that scholarship next year or for a walk-on.I am sure that the recruiting process can be trying to these kids, and yes, he handled it poorly, but he is just a kid.Lets all of us Dawg fans show some class, even if he did’t!

Chip, I think way too much is being made on “The one UGA lost” versus those UGA got. I commend the UGA Coaches, across the board, on a job well done. If you critique this group in terms of needs the GA Coaches targeted their guys early and bascially had this class wrapped up before the season was even over. That in itself should be headline material!!! Congrats to Coach Richt and his staff on a job well done!

Just returned from the Bulldogs’ signing day press conference. It was quite the spectacle. Football team meeting room was packed with TV cameras and reporters, radio jockeys, sportswriters, recruiting service hacks, all 10 of Georgia’s coaches, the five freshmen who enrolled early and different folks from the athletics department. At the front of the room were head coach Mark Richt and recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner and they briefed the group then answered questions… .

**The most intriguing thing was Richt’s reaction to the Dwayne Allen about face. I asked him if he wished he’d handled Allen’s fickleness differently since they tend to move on from wafflers and they had to turn down some strong prospects because of their commitment to Allen. Here’s what Richt said: “I think could have handled it differently than I did. But I can’t really say anything. I think I could have handled things differently, yeah.” There are rules and ethics regarding what coaches can say about someone that signed elsewhere, but clearly Richt is hot over this matter. Earlier, in an informal session with us, he said, “some guys make it difficult on themselves, their family and their coaches.” But that’s enough about that. Other highlights… .

Richt on UGA’s class being highly ranked: “I don’t really pay any attention to it. First of all, after watching [the first day of] mat drills this morning I think we need to concentrate really hard on our first game because we have a long way to go as a team.” …

On A.J. Green, who never wavered on his commitment: “it seems like we’re really starting to attract that kind of guy. John Maxwell said in a book I read, ‘you attract who you are.’ We don’t offer a lot of glitz and glitter and bling, whatever you want to say. We try to stay as close to reality as we can so that when they show up they don’t end up saying, ‘coach, this is not the way you said it would be.’ … It is gratifying to see what would be considered an extremely high-profile player handle it that way. Coach Fab [Fabris, who recruited Green] said he was the lowest maintenance high profile kid he’s ever come across. He came to a practice one day in the spring, he liked what he saw and the way he was treated and he said that’s where he wanted to be and told us that. He has not wavered one bit. We might have been a little nervous, but not him… . If any of these guys had waited until the last day they would have been higher profile prospects. But they weren’t about that and I appreciate it.” …

Some other tidbits, Garner said A.J. Harmon would start out on the defensive line, “as long as he meets the guidelines.” … New TE’s coach said NaDerris Ward is fine and will compete in the spring… . OL Ben Jones said mat drills were one of the hardest things he’s ever done. “I couldn’t sleep last night” he said of the anxiety of them… . Garner gave a backhanded slap to Allen and to Florida, who pulled out on a couple of prospects late, when he said Georgia is committed to whomever it offers to the very end no matter what. “That’s why coach says we have to be absolutely certain about anybody we offer because we’re going to stick with it.”

Screw him! I’d rather have one star recruit who bleeds red and black over 5 stars with no loyality and weak personality like this kid! however one thing this kid has that all our players don’t: he cracked uneder pressure. this is SEC contry, no room for “girlie men”! go dawgs

Don’t know about B.J. Brand but I forgot to mention that Richt said, as I expected he would, that the Dogs are going to sit on that last scholarship and carry it over into nest year. Who knows? Maybe they’ll sign a 5-star with it.

Those quotes from Coach Richt in Chip’s latest entry illustrate perfectly why I am proud to be a UGA alumnus and equally proud of our coach and program.

The loss of one TE will not have the slightest effect on how we do the next 2-4 years. However, like his own HS coach, I am disappointed that this kid’s indecisiveness prevented UGA from offering his slot to someone else. Such is life.

All said and done, we have a coaching staff that makes us extremely proud.

By NASCARfan

February 6, 2008 4:09 PM | Link to this

Hey Chip,

Is this back-stabbing going to have any affect on Coach Richt’s kid’s commitment to Clemson? I mean, does Coach Richt really want his kid going to a school that never really competes for anything special and who’s coach is always on the hot seat, even if that coach is a Bowden, whom he knows?

And I don’t think there’s anything backhanded about telling the truth about Urban Liar down in Florida. That man will lie, cheat, and steal to get a recruit on the hook, and then arbitrarily dump him before signing day if someone “better” comes along.

This is why although he won a title with Ron Zook’s recruits, once kids really start to figure out what kind of unethical man Urban Myth is and the fact that no one in his offenses are going to have a big impact in the NFL (what these recruits REALLY want to see), the well will dry up for old Urban.

Hey, anyone, and I mean anyone could have won with the talent Zook stocked (well, except for Zook). What does that say about how crappy the Big-ZERO is, that a guy like Zook is a good coach and tactician up there?

Crazy.

Get over it Richt. You have taken guys at the last minute and you like all the coaches put a lot of pressure on these kids. Why al of a sudden does a kid become so underiable when he turns down Georgia. he also gets slower and smaller. had he signed with Georgia then he wold have ben lauded as a “really good kid” like all of you say the dawg recruits are. this is a great class probably the best ever and now they need to be coached or at least not messed up and maybe the dawgs can get it to the elite level. you have been short for a long time.

this is different than getting the jitters, this is a fool doing everything in his power to find greener grass. First, it was UNC, then it was FSU, and now Clemson. The day this kid committed he started looking for another place to play. He gets a 8-5 team for the next five years(yes five, he will redshirt AND never make it to the NFL). He’s not a competitor and is just a waste of God-given talent. Good riddance Go Dawgs!

No, NASCAR, this won’t have an affect on Jon Richt’s commitment to Clemson nor Richt’s relationship with Tommy Bowden. It came down to playing time and Georgia could not and would not promise it to him, hence Richt’s last-ditch conversation with the kid Sunday night… .

Quaildawg, this is bad but I can’t remember the kids’ names. One was from Savannah, D-line I think. Reportedly was going to be borderline on grades and Gators told him can’t take a chance even though he committed to them back in December. I’ll look it up and report back.

quaildawg, it was Chaz Sutton, a DE from Savannah. Poor grades… . And you’re right, Georgia does offer fewer scholarships overall than a lot of schools. Richt and Garner addressed that today. They said some schools, if they have three scholarships for wide receivers, they might offer 10 scholarships. The Dogs try to narrow their focus much more than that much earlier and go after specific ones. That way they don’t put themselves in a bind if several accept. The downside is you may miss in some years like they did a few years back on O-linemen.

By Chip Towers

February 6, 2008 5:19 PM | Link to this

FWIW, Chaz Sutton signed with South Carolina. Rivals ranks him a 4-star. He was supposedly an academic risk, which was what Florida cited, but that doesn’t mean he won’t get in at South Carolina. Remember, this is a place where Steve Spurrier scolded the school president for making it hard to enroll his prospects.

I am sure this is a confusing time for 17 yr olds and I am sure this is a hard choice when you have lots of persuasive coaches pursuing you for their school. However, when you switch schools at the last minute when you thought enough to make a commitment in Dec of 2006 and you called a news conference on Monday to announce your choice you look ridiculous. I am upset that there are players who wanted to wear the red/black but were denied the opportunity due to the selfish nature of this kid. Wish him well? Yeah…sure I do. He will get his playing time but will do so on a lesser team, in a lesser conference, in a lesser stadium, with a lesser coach, with lesser fans, in a lesser state, with lesser exposure at a lesser university. Good Luck with that DA.

You can only judge the impact of Allen’s jerking us around by what we do with the scholarship later. Opportunity cost: what did we gain / lose by losing out on him? We will know in 2 to 3 years. Until then, we can be assured we have a class who wants to compete, succeed and win over the next four years. I still can’t believe we are in such a good spot - #2 in ‘07, killed our BCS opponent and have the #4 class in the country. What’s not to feel good about???

The only thing I am truly upset about is that he possibly cost us DT Hunter from Buford. Hunter going to Florida I believe could be significantly more costly to UGA in the future than losing a tight end needs some time to be able to compete at the Div 1 level.

If recruits starts to play games then Richt should go ahead and withdraw offers and go after others who wants to play for uga. He really should be NBA material (with this attitude), but, he’ll probably end up at a division 2 school in a couple of years.

Crazy.

While it really stinks that this kid’s waffle took an opportunity away from someone else, I still think we are better off without him. I remember when Odel Thurman did the same thing on signing day, except that he waffled on Florida and chose UGA. He then proceeded to make poor choices and create obstacles for himself to overcome.

Odel teased everyone, including the Cleveland Browns, with his ability. He was a 5 star recruit, but he was not a 5 star player because he could not commit and follow through without wavering… in his personal life and on the field. We do not need a guy of questionable judgment.

You’ll do good to good to go 6 - 6 this year which certainly doesn’t give SC the opportunity to “fall out” of Championship contention!!!! I’m not gonna wish him luck at Clemson but I’m not gonna wish him ill will either. He’s a kid. And an immature one at that. He more than likely won’t pan out to be as good as he’s hyped up to be anyway so the way I look at it we will be better served using that scholly next year when we need it more. It was actually funny watching how far they moved Clemson up the rankings because of this one guy. It was like the Omar going to UF all over again. They moved up from 8 or 9 to #1 the instant he said UF. One guy doesn’t make a team that much better unless you’re talking about a GREAT QB or something. Definitely not a freaking TE! Most of the dawg nation will have bitter feelings for young mr allen, but whether those feelings slowly dissappear into afterthoughts, or grow into complete disgust will depend on how Omar Hunter and the other lost recruits develope. UGA’s 2008 Signing Class is ranked No. 4 by Scout.com, No. 5 by ESPN, and No. 6 by Rivals.

Georgia Tech is ranked No. 49 by Rivals and No. 38 by Scout.com.

Tennessee vols’ Phillip Fulmer finds he recruited the 9th best recruiting class in The SEC today and that is the No. 36 recruiting ranking in BOTH Scout.com and No. 36 in Rivals.

Then, we come into the AJ-C and we have an entire conversation about some tight end who has been saying he was going to Climpson to be a farmer and a feel good story question line of how we feel about that.

Gives the AJ-C credibility, you see to have the ONLY AJ-C sportswriter UGA grad have that as his entire thought process on Signing Day 2008.

Auburn is No. 19 in Scout.com and Auburn is No. 20 in Rivals.

LSU is ranked 5 places worse in Rivals than UGA’s recruiting class at No. 11 to our No. 6. LSU is ranked several places worse at No. 6 to Coach Richt at No. 4 in Scout.com.

The Big 10 has 3 of the Top 25 Ranked Recruiting Classes (Zook), while The SEC has twice as many at 6.

Florida is ranked 7 places worse at No. 11 compared to UGA at No. 4 in Scout.com. Florida is ranked worse than UGA by ESPN as well. Rivals says Florida is 3 places better at No. 3 to UGA at No. 6.

Spurrier is No. 35 Scout.com and No. 22 Rivals.

You know what I would say Chipper boy ?

What in the hell has happened to Phillip Fulmer’s ability to recruit ?

UGA picked up 3 top-rated players in the state of Florida including the top kicker in the country and a DE who had 125 tackles and a RB in Florida who is rated 4-Stars by Rivals and the No. 13 best running back in the nation, half an Offensive Line from Alabama - both of whom are top students too, top wide receiver in the nation from South Carolina, 4.42 in 40-yard dash cornerback with 1580 SAT and 3.5 GPA from North Carolina, a 6.2 weighing 215 lbs. running back with 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash rated one of the top RB in the country from Virginia, and we wrapped-up and closed the borders to this state.

14 of the 24 commitments run the 40-yard dash in 4.5 or better for UGA this Signing Class.

13 Super Southern 100 AJ-C players are UGA Signees. 1 is signed by Georgia Tech who is listed on the Super Southern 100. ( I guess we can expect to hear how Uzzi from Chamblee High is doing, since he is the ONLY Super Southern 100 AJ-C rates as 1 of the top 100 players in The South. )

Oh, and the vols of Phillip Fulmer signed 2 Super Southern 100 AJ-C players ( to Coach Richt’s 13 ) a LB from North Carolina and a TE from Tennessee.

Why don’t you tell us all vols’ fans how great your TE and LB are ?

Coach Richt signed 2 top RB, 2 top WR, 1 top DT, 2 top DE, 1 top CB, 3 top OL, 1 top LB, and 1 top Athlete - all 13 of which the AJ-C said were 13 of the Top 100 Football Recruits in The Entire South.

12 of the 24 are ranked by Scout.com as in the Top 15 players in the nation at their position. That’s half the Signing Class Top 15 nationally.

15 of the 24 are ranked by Rivals as in the Top 19 players in the country at their position. Rivals also says 13 of The Bulldogs’ Signees are ranked in the Top 15 at their position nationally.

Not that the AJ-C is capable of such an analysis, because is sounds like a homey analysis.

Guess what ?

If you report what the top recruiting services actually say about the rankings, it’s called reporting the news instead of trying to make the news.

Something ESPN could use some lessons on too, trying to tell us how Tom Petty was a staged rush to the stage for a 57-year old rocker at The Super Bowl. Excuse me, that was the greatest halftime show in Super Bowl history ESPN.

This may sound crazy, but with the recruiting classes we’re getting, I’m glad we’ve got an extra spot. It would be great, imo, if UGA had one spot open every year so that they could reward an outstanding walk-on. There’s always a chance that another “pulpwood” type player shows up and proves himself on the college gridiron. It could even inspire more good players to try to walk-on to earn the spot.

hunk,i look at the situation with allen the same way you do,an open slot could be used for a deserving walk on,like a running back that could be elevated to third on the depth chart.this would allow us to red shirt jackson and samuel.samuel will red shirt anyway, and with ealey coming in next year he should be converted to lb.if the opening isn’t used for a walk on it could be saved for next year.richt wants to sign two qbs next year which will leave only thirteen scholarships for FOOTBALL PLAYERS.i know you have to have qbs,but imo, that is the most overated posistion in college football.both qbs will red shirt and it’s possible neither will start until their jr year.we could use that scholly for a big old lineman or stud linebacker that could contribute right away, instead of another te.we already have four good tes.why are so many of us worrying about one recruit when we should be celebrating a great class?coach richt doesn’t have any hard feelings toward bowden, neither should we.i think the most intresting class this year belongs to ga tech.johnson has scoured the hedgerows for two and three star players that he thinks will fit his system, rather than compete for four and five star players.can these guys win against the all star players recruited by uga, clemson, miami, and fsu?if johnson wins nine games next year he should be coach of the year!

I hate to agree with a Tiger but the truth is UGA got AJ Harmon under similar circumstances. These are 18 year old kids making decisions that will effect the rest of their lives- how about cutting a kid a break for liking 2 schools and choosing 1. UGA will be just fine and I wish this kid the best— after all, he has to live in Anderson, SC for the next 4 or 5 year. There’s really no need to pile on.

I feel bad for a guy like Lipscolmb who I believe wanted to be a dawg but we couldn’t offer. Allen should feel bad about doing that. Seems that not enough emphasis is put on a players character in these recruiting rankings. Clemson signs a RB that claims he’ll be in the NFL in 3 years… not exactly what I’d call student athlete material. Julio Jones holds out to feed his ego until signing day making coaches and media follow him around night and day while Green is comfortable in commiting early and staying out of the lime light - all the while he becomes not as good as Jones because he’s not a hot story. I’m extremely happy with the young men Coach Richt has recruited. Good luck to them. Welcome to UGA. Go Dawgs!

To me it seems like the whole recruiting process is getting a little crazy. It’s even being reported frequently that UGA doesn’t even have to do much recruiting anymore. Out of the few scholarships we have to give next year, we’ve already offered most of them and they have been accepted. There are a pile of high school players that don’t blossom until their senior year. Don’t get me wrong, I’m damn well excited that UGA’s program is so desirable that the coaches just answer the door for guys wanting to get in, but is there a chance that we are going to miss out on some real good players because the kid grew 3 inches of height and 30 pounds of muscle in the summer between his jr and sr year? If our program is so strong that we don’t have to be concerned about that, then that’s great, but there have been hundreds of all-american players that were’nt that highly regarded as juniors in high school… and a lot of them walk-ons. If my son were to be one of those that matures late and is faced with the choice of being an invited walk-on at UGA versus a full ride at VMI guess what I have to advise him to do? Yes, I think it would be great to reserve a scholarship or two to reward a walk-on who can earn it. I even think it would be good to make that a policy for every year. Can you imagine the competition that would enable during mat drills and spring training. I think if you studied the last decade or so and compared the high rated stars that flop to the amount of players who over achieve after walking on it would be justified to have a program that advertises having a couple of spots reserved for earning with on-the-job performance.

The new ‘U’ ..UGA. Richt is doing his best to emulate the Hurricanes of old, complete with the thuggery doing the Soulja Boy. He learned a lot from Sweet Ole’ Bobby down in Tallahassee also. Preach the scripture, but rely on the outlaws for your success. Too bad it will never equal those two fine bastions of criminals and thugs. And if that isn’t enough, now your professors are getting in on the act ! What a fine institution you have there.

Well, looks like we can add paws4thought to the idiot list, that didn’t take long.

As for “checking the facts”, UGA beat Clemson in 2002, 2003 (30-0 LOL)… and will repeat the process in 2013 and 2014. What, 2 beatdowns every decade isn’t enough for you?

But at least one UGA player didn’t score at death valley 25 years ago… at least you have… that.

Yeah KJ, Georgia did beat a weak Tiger team that year. I think the other one you didn’t give the score on came down to a missed CU field goal at the end. That doesn’t change the fact that Dooley chickened out on the annual and geographically natural rivalry.

It’s understandable though KJ. Seeing how any shade of orange always turns into your kryptonite. Want to discuss beatdowns now ?

Wow,

Did one of our incoming corners really score a 1580 on the SAT?

Very rarely is someone given those kinds of athletic AND academic gifts.

Impressive!

paws4thought,you guys should know all about beatdowns, you lose to tech enough.how about these facts,a losing record in bowls for the last ten years, seventeen years without a ten win season, and when did you last win your conference?mark richt’s average for the past seven years is over ten wins a year.why are you talking smack on this blog anyway?news flash, you are in a different conference,ga tech, not uga,is your rival.why don’t you go on the tech blog and talk smack?hey, there’s always next year, you could tell the techies that!

Predictable, I smash a giant hole in your retarded claims, and you revert to “butbutbut UF/UT beat you, so THERE”. You sure you’re not a Tech fan?

I’m sorry UGA can’t find room on their schedule every year for every third-tier team that happens to be gunning for them. It’s difficult enough making room for all the teams in a real conference (hint: ACC isn’t one).

The way I see it…we’re better off without him. We’re not talking about some “nobody” team, that doesn’t win. This is the University of Georgia. We deserve players that are committed. Dwayne Allen could only be so lucky to play for us. Go ahead, Dwayne. Good luck at Clemson. Hope you have fun in the Chick-fil-A Bowl next year!

I think it is crap. Now I am not blind to know know about what all of these schools do to get kids to come to their schools. The bags of money in the trunks of cars, and maybe I just wish we would of gave a little more money to get him. I have been around college football my entire life. My dad is a retired college coach. Hes told me the stories, and his friends have told me, some who are still at dominent D1 programs. Now dang how much did the IPTAY pay allen? Give me a break CLEMSON? They cant even win the ACC. They choke every year! As my best friend says, who is a huge Clemson fan and dad is one of the Large IPTAY donors, the phrase all clemson fans use the most, Wait till next year… guess what they have to use it ever year! They go to the chick-fil-a bowl as the ACC rep and get beat by a less than average SEC Auburn team that Georgia dominated a few weeks earlier. ACC football is a joke. Did anyone realize that two seasons ago their was not a single ACC team that beat any SEC team. Go for it Allen you may have gotten more money from Clemson. But the closest you’ll ever come to having a rock on your finger is howards rock that you touch before you go on down the field. Now thats a tradition some guy went out west picked up a rock in the desert brought it back so lets frame it and make it into a tradition. Guess what Georgia fans Im going to Colorado get a bag of snow and were going to make it a tradition. We’ll keep it frozen for years! and before every game we are going to touch the fridge for good luck. hahaha. Clemson and Allen your a joke. Allen I hope you flop! When you make a commitment stick with it, and if your going to renig on it at least pick a school that you have a chance to win at not the school where you are going to make the most money.

WHAT IF SOME OTHER KID WAS AFFECTED BECAUSE MR ALLEN WAS SELFISH. MAYBE THE DAWGS WOULD HAVE RECRUITED ANOTHER KID SOMEONE WHO WANTED TO PLAY THERE BUT INSTEAD HAD TO SETTLE ELSEWHERE.

Dewayne to Jon Richt in the huddle “Jon I ran that fly route all the way to the endzone like you said 25 times this game and you haven’t hit me once, you haven’t even thrown my way. Heck, they stopped covering me after the 10th time”. Jon, “Dewayne I am committed to throwing the ball to you on this play just like the previous 25. Just like you told my dad you were committed, oh never mind run the same route…..now don’t screw this up.”

Allen leaving by deserting the people who recruited him and held a scholarship for him has hurt some one else who would have got a scholarship to be a Bulldog. I just read an article in Savannah where one of the states best linemen did not receive an offer from Georgia due to scholarship problems, now he will play at Florida Sate his second choice, he just may have been a bulldog if it had not been for Allen holding a scholarship.if you’re going to bale out give the coach a week notice have some respect for his position.

I know you’re disappointed you had a scholarship left over, and that’s too bad. Although that’s a crummy argument because most everyone oversigns and attrition or gray-shirting someone takes care of it. But you can blame the last second switch on Allen’s Dawg-goned high school coach, Inman. He publicly told everyone the kid’s mind was Jello (while still commited to UGA)and met with him repeatedly (after Allen returned from Clemson) to convince him to stay at UGA. Afterwards, he publicly expressed his disappointment in Allen. What a great coach! At least support your players, even if they didn’t get you great seats for next year!!!
