UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Dogs awesome at home, awful on road
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Drove back from Columbia, S.C., early this morning after watching the Bulldogs get dismantled by South Carolina last night at the Colonial Center. Never mind the final score, I can’t tell you how bad Georgia looked most of that game. Especially early.
When it comes to playing on the road versus at home, this is truly a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde team.
Last night represented an almost exact duplicate of what happened to them against Tennessee and Mississippi State, albeit against a far inferior team, hence the six-point margin. I’m not sure how to describe it but it’s like they’re already defeated as soon as they step onto the court. They play nervous or tight or dumb or sloppy. Whatever you want to call it it’s just flat-out bad.
Compare that to Georgia’s play at home and it’s almost like they’re a completely different team. Now you and I know there’s almost disparity between the way teams play at home and on the road but with the Bulldogs it’s just ridiculous. Just look at the last six games: Georgia averaged 74 points at home and 54.6 on the road; it shooting .472 at home and .346 on the road. Not coincidentally, it was 3-0 in Stegeman and 0-3 at other places.
You could say that’s just part of being a young team. But if you look close at the Dogs, they aren’t really all that young. Six players gobble up the majority of the minutes and they’re two seniors, three juniors and a true freshman.
If you ask me I think it’s mostly a mental thing with this team. Perhaps they could use a session with a sports psychologist or something. Granted, without Takais Brown and Mike Mercer this is not a great team. Maybe not even a good team. But at least they used to be scrappy on the road.
Anyway, Kentucky is coming to town on Saturday (1 p.m., CBS) and that’s followed by a visit from Vanderbilt. To the Dogs’ credit, they’re 10-0 at Stegeman and their students are flocking to the gym in big numbers. Based on what I’ve seen so far, Georgia best take care of its business at home because I’m not seeing much hope for them on the road.
What’s your thoughts on it?

They play poorly on the road because they are poorly coached. They can’t make simple passes…dribble…get open shots.
We have never had any semblance of a half-court offense since we’ve had Felton. Our offense is either Sundiata drive and take a circus shot or Sundiata drive and kick it out to someone for a 25-footer. We are terrible.
Felton is not the man to coach UGA. He can’t keep his players interested, eligible, or even in school. His job is to win games and he just hasn’t done that through 6 years. Only in year-one (with Harrick’s players who actually knew how to score) has Felton ever gotten close to the NCAAs.
Maybe after we score our first basket against UK, we should have the whole team run out onto the floor and celebrate!
It would at least make me feel like Felton is doing something.

I have watched GA BB from the same seat for 35 years. I’ll be damned if I know why these current players will not try to win on the road. We had 3 players standing in the paint at Tennessee and made no effort to contest layups or dunks. When Billy Humphrey is afraid to shoot, something is going on. Maybe starting a different 5 would get their attention. They could not play any worse than these current starters.

Have to at least give Dave Bliss credit. He is slow, can’t dribble very well, not much of a shooter - but he plays his rear end off every time out and gets everything out of what he has. That’s something that the coach hasn’t been able to cajole out of anyone else in the past 4 years.

LOL! That last comment attributed to me was actually from my 7-month-old son, Bryson. I was holding him and he likes to run his hands across the keyboard and he somehow got the cursor inside the comments window and hit the enter bar… . So there you go. No arguing with his logic!

Billy Humphrey was 1-12 from 3 point range. I don’t think he’s ever been “afraid to shoot”, and that was one of the main problems for Georgia last night.

Hey Chip, looks like your kid has good hands. Can he shoot or dribble? Sign him up! BTW, please get a new coach at UGA. Anyone can see if you aren’t hitting your jumpers, then throw it inside or make penetration and maybe draw a foul. USC had 3 fouls on them in the first half. 3!!! Instead, let’s keep shooting 27, yes 27, 3’s.

Hey Gamecock, congrats on your team making it back to .500 ball. Hmm, am I talking about your basketball team or football team? Amazingly, they are the same. The little USc will be 17 point underdogs come September. You beat UGA in how many years? 6, 7, 8? Keep running that chicken mouth. Make sure you come back in September.

Worst offensive scheme in the country, and no good big man = No Chance. Felton can recruit, but he cannot coach offense. With how poorly our team shoots we must try and fast break the entire game. If we slow it down we will not score. Dave Bliss is one of our best players this year, and if you crunch his numbers over his career he has been the worst player to ever see significant minutes as a Bulldog. Minutes played to score differential and he is the worst to ever play ball at Georgia. Kenneth Harris and Walter Hill were recruited to play basketball let them play.

I have to say, Gamecock Henry, I admire your spirit…misplaced as it is.
Seriously, Gamecock fans talking smack to UGA about football is like if I got on a Yale academics blog and bragged about how we had more Rhodes Scholars than them this year and thus are a better school.
That’s called an analogy, brother. Maybe you can figure it out.
Dude, you won in 2007. Well done and I give you SC all the props. But you’re not a better football school or even our contemporary. I’m sure you’re smart enough to figure that out, too…right?

I’d be willing to bet, you didn’t even know who the basketball team was playing Wednesday night and couldn’t name 2 players. I know this is all new to you , but the way it works is, SC still plays in Athens later this year.
Do you even know where the baseball field is located in Columbia?

Gamecock Henry, Not a basketball fan but you really need to quit talking about things that may or may not happen next football season. The series record is 47-17 in football so UGA owns the Gamecocks. You beat us once every 5 to 6 years so if you are predicting South Carolina beating Georgia in football next year automatically you are crazy. BTW: Future is bright? You have got to be kidding me if you think South Carolina is going to be even close to winning an SEC Championship in the next 100 to 500 years.

Gamecock Henry, or Lamecock Gary, you obviously enjoy making yourself a pest but you are showing yourself to be a delusional twerp without substance. You aren’t welcome here like fans of some other schools such as War Eagle and Gen Neyland. Unlike you they represent schools with a respected football history. South Carolina rarely beats Georgia and has a football history that should embaress anybody. It is one of the sorriest programs in the history of Southern football. You have never won a championship of substance.

BuLLdawg,
Just curious. Do you have the stats on NCAA major violations? I can help with the Tech part: 1 in football (2002) and 1 in tennis (1989). What is Georgia’s record? The only one I know of is men’s basketball in 2002. Are there more in other sports?
By the way, I’m not using that or academics as an excuse for Tech not being as good as Georgia in most sports, so don’t go there.

This is a big announcement. Coach Richt has yet another protégé’ quarterback. Figuring that unless Matthew Stafford does something this up-coming Junior Season that he hasn’t so far, three (3) of the Top Scout.com Top 15 Quarterbacks in the country 2009 have UGA picked among their choices.
Obviously, they feel that with Matthew Stafford and Joe Cox both being Seniors the season after this one coming up, that they could come in and Redshirt their Freshman Year while our 2 Seniors then play. And, then they would be in line for Coach Richt’s 3rd Freshman Quarterback to be his Starter. Coach Richt does have a History of this.
http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=4&pid=10&yr=2009
The 15th top-rated QB in the nation from Alabama also at 6’ 4” is considering this situation.
The 7th top-rated QB in the nation from Oconee County Zach Mettenberger leaped at this chance and he has a huge arm at 6’ 4”.
The 5th top-rated QB in the nation from Indiana is considering this situation and he is 6’ 3”.
Coach Richt only has 17 on Scholarship who are Seniors this up-coming season, so he doesn’t have many slots.
Getting the No. 7 highest-rated Scout.com Quarterback Nationally with obviously the arm and size to step in after Matthew Stafford’s senior season, redshirting the season after this one coming-up, is big news. Signing Day is 3 days away for 2008 too, if you want to talk about Recruiting like you say.
