UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Hawaii appears to have emotional edge
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Happy New Year from the Big Easy! Well, almost. I was in the French Quarter last night and it’s hard to imagine the way people were partying down there that they’d have much left for the actual New Year’s Eve celebration tonight.
That was one observation I made. Another is that there are a LOT of Hawaii fans here. It’s going to be interesting to see exactly how many when everybody pours into the Superdome for tomorrow night’s Sugar Bowl matchup between the Warriors (12-0) and Georgia (10-2). I’ve heard estimates ranging from 25,000 to 50,000 and coach June Jones said 35,000. I’m inclined to think it has to be on the low side of that scale but we’ll see.
Conversely, there are plenty of Georgia fans here but it doesn’t appear to me that there’s as many as I’m accustomed to seeing for a Sugar Bowl. Perhaps it’s because of the BCS Championship Game snub or maybe it is because the Bulldogs have played in this bowl in three of the last six years. Whatever it is, there just doesn’t seem to be the excitement and electricity one usually feels from the fans for a major BCS bowl.
And like I said, Hawaii folks are going bonkers over this. That were certainly in a celebratory mood down in the Quarter. I read in one of the Honolulu papers that the undefeated Warriors playing in the Sugar Bowl is the biggest thing for Hawaii since it was granted statehood.
On a related note, I heard last night that Georgia was trying to organize its “Dawg Walk” before the Sugar Bowl but was unable to because of logistical and security issues.
So heading into tomorrow’s game, I’d say Hawaii has a big edge in the intangible department when it comes to emotion. Maybe I’ll be proved wrong when we get closer to kickoff but that’s the vibe I’m getting right now.
Do y’all think that will make a difference? Can Georgia still win if it’s not as emotionally invested as the visitors? Do you think the fans will rally?
Meanwhile, the news hasn’t been great for the Dogs on the injury front. Georgia has been real vague about it but linebacker Dannell Ellerbe clearly does not feel well and we just found out he’s been battling an Achilles tendon problem, too. Meanwhile, fellow linebacker Marcus Washington is still not fully recovered from an ankle injury and Knowshon Moreno has a heavily-taped ankle, though he insists he’s 100 percent. That’s not good considering the track meet they’re about to enter against Hawaii.
That’s all I’ve got for now. Coach Richt has a press conference at 2:30 ET followed by June Jones at 3 p.m. So I’ll let you know here if anything interesting comes out of that. Let me know if you have any burning questions in the meantime.

Intangibles don’t sufficiently compensate a ‘fake’ team that had the nation’s weakest schedule and had to rely on a call that was crooked or horrendous in order to defeat Boise State and maintain its WAC [ha ha ha] championship. So, a lot fat cannibals are in the stinky city to cheer on a team composed of jailhouse “athletes.” Hope the Superdome has laid in a supply of Spam at the concession stands to appease the HA crowd.

I would count how many HI fans are down in the quarter 2 nights before the game as more of a factor of how many have ever been to N.O. before. I would think many many UGA fans in town have seen it all at some point. But, good for them, they should party.
Game time, won’t matter. If we must factor in the emotional side, I believe the Dawgs are not on the short end of motivation. To me Hawaii is a novelty right now, they are going to get thier 15 minutes of fame, (well deserved) but a month from now they will be out of the national picture. No matter the outcome of the game, even them winning, they are simply going to pack up and go home. UGA seems to me to be the one with something on the line. Unlike last Sugar Bowl, this bowl IS the big game. In 2005 the SECCG was the climax of the season. That Sugar Bowl was just the parting gift. Really even last year, the CFB didn’t seem as important as just the idea that they turned around the season to even qualify. This year’s bowl really means more to them, I would think. I don’t recall any talk of how important winning the bowl game is, as much as I have heard them talking about it this year.

Speaking of “jailhouse atheletes”, have you checked the UGA roster, Billy Boi? GA should beat Hawaii, it’ll be no big deal if they do. But if they don’t, it’ll be HUGE! I think it could go either way.

no reason to get fired up before the game……just do it during the game…..and shut these warriors up……we’ll be talking about it on wednesday about how it should have been a better game…..but, what happened to the vaunted hawaii passing game? let the big dawg eat…..i predict a georgia offensive show that will dwarf whatever it is hawaii has to offer…….go dawgs….sic ‘em…..woof woof woof.

First of all, Locals ( what Hawaiians called themselves)can party with the best of them! Everyday in Hawaii is a party! I have lived there for 7 years but I’m orginally from Georgia and a die hard Dawg fan. But don’t let the strong show of support fool you, the Warriors barely get 10,000 in Aloha Stadium on Saturday nights and thats with being the only football team on all of the islands! Apathy reigns supreme on the island and the fans are about as fair weather as they come! You can drive around the island ( Mauka side to Ewa side to Kailua side) and not find any Hawaii sports gear or team wear! It’s easy to be excited about your team when they win! The Warriors are the only undefeated team in football and the WAC (or WACK) champions and are not even the #1 sport on the island! Check out the stands at the Wahine Warriors (women’s) volleyball team! Hawaii beat sub-par teams to get to the big dance and I hope the Dawgs lay the wood to them so I can walk down my street in Makiki (which is around the corner from UH) in my Dawg gear and say “HOWZIT!”

The “emotional edge” lasts until the end of the first play when you get hit in the mouth.

Why do you keep pandering to this “BCS snub” thing?
What’s Richt going to have his boys do this time to “motivate them”? Wear black underwear?
They better come to play or it could be a disaster for them Dawgs.

Unfortunately, Hawaii will still not get much respect even if they beat UGA. Many “sportswriters” will say we should have won and that Hawaii plays in the weak WAC, etc. If we lose, we will be called the overrated team that didn’t deserve to play in a BCS game. I just hope we come out mad and fired up. The Dawgs need to knock the rainbow warriors in the mouth quick and never let up.

Don’t you think Hawaii’s fans have a lot more to be excited about though? This is their biggest bowl game ever and quite a huge opportunity for them. It’s no wonder our fans are probably more reserved due to quite a few of them most likely being to New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl before. Or they may just be pacing themselves… Regardless, let’s just hope that the Georgia players and coaches show up to play. Keep us updated on Moreno, if he’s not 100% that is not a good start. I don’t doubt that he’d play through a minor injury, but being 100% for a big game like this is a must.

Chip, have you heard anything about whether or not KJ is back to full speed? I am very worried that for our defense to succeed, either KJ or Ellerbee will have to be on the field at full strentgh. They are our emtional leaders on the D side of the ball. Also, Stafford has been very quiet, at least in terms of saying anything about the game to the media. Is he ready to go? Is he fired up? I sure hope so…

Aloha, from the Big Island of Hawaii, the land of fire and ice. We in Hawaii are both humbled and proud to be playing such a fine team as the Georgia Bulldogs. Yes, we do not play in a conference with the stature of the SEC. Yes, our schedule was not loaded with top-ten teams like Georgia’s. We do, however, have pride in our team and their accomplishments. We do play an exciting and fast-paced game. We do have the spirit of our island home behind us. We already have won something just by being invited to play such a strong team, and who knows, we might have some surprises. We DO have Madame Pele on our side. No ka oi e malama pono, Hawaii Warriors.

reservoir dawg…. you must be all dried up thinking the dawgs will be puttin the Warriors away by the third Qtr. The Dangerfield dawgs will struggle defending the COLT. He is gonna sling it all over the field and the dawgs defense will be confused with Willies wait and see defense. Dawgs will embarrass the SEC. Dawgs need to be in the ACC. Clemson would be better to represent the SEC in the Sugar for the SEC. I think these two teams should swap Conferences! Go Rainbows!!!!!

any dogs fans in ATL need tickets? my brother can’t go for family reasons and he can’t seem to give them away. i think the team will be very fired up but the fans’ enthusiasm seems to on a steady nosedive since the peak at the Auburn game. interstingly, from watching national tv coverage, it seems the media has this game pegged as the most intriguing matchup of any bowl this year. i would love to see LSU and UGA win convincingly and end the season with 2 SEC teams in the top 3. Go DAWGS! Chip, Let us know what Richt has to say in the press conference as soon as you can! SEC 2-0 in bowls so far. Kentucky is a lock against the remaining few Criminoles. AU? UF? UT? ARK? UGA? Any time there is a game like this - first BCS game for Hawaii and second bowl game period in the content. US - the “underdog” team will be fired up more than the favored team. No big surprise. You will also have a lot of the “neutral” corporate types pull for David against Goliath. This is where the better team just has to man-up and play like they are capable of playing. One other note: a lot of the Georgia fans are traveling today or even tomorrow to the game, so you would not see them boozing it up with the AJC staff in the hell-hole that is the French Quarter. That place was a pit BEFORE the hurricane. I wish the bowl would move or lose its BCS status and let the SEC sign up with the Cotton and make it a BCS game.
As for the injuries, that is just football. Sucks because you’d like to be at 100%, but a lot of other teams are dealing with suspensions and injuries, so the Dawgs will need to have other players raise their game. We can do it.
I think the team will be fired up. If we keep the game to a tie by end of first quarter, we win running away with it later in the game. Hawaii can score quickly, so our running game will be key.
Chip - is anyone hurt or suspended for Hawaii?

You know when it was first announced that UGA would play HAWAII in the Sugar Bowl,I was actually worried. So, I went to the Hawaii website and looked at their schedule. Needless to say, I am not that worried anymore. They had a couple of close games to a couple of no-namer’s. I hate to be so overly opptimistic however it is just so difficult. Georgia rolls and Hawaii is thankful they don’t play the schedule the DAWGS play!!!!! It’s good Hawaii has the emotion edge now because once Knowshon scores a TD,their emotion will be a distant memory.

Has anyone watched Hawaii play? It’s easy to get a good lead on them in the early quarters, but because of their system of adjusting to defenses it’s just a matter of time before they pick apart the coverage and get the ball in the endzone enough times before the final whistle is blown. Then again, it’s nice to see everyone so confident, because it’ll only make Hawaii’s victory even sweeter. Bring it on rednecks, KEFE!!!

As someone who grew up on the West Coast, Hawaii football is a legend out there. Teams fly into the islands to play and they forget about football. The old adage about the Warriors always losing on the mainland is over! This game will be decided for Hawaii if UGA falls behind and tries to pass instead of running 90% of the time. The Hawaii linebackers will take advantage of the line and blitz like a tidal wave! UGA doesn’t have the speed that the Warriors do, so they better keep the ball away from Mr. Brennan! By the way, the Hawaii subway fans are legendary! The only other team with similiar interest is Notre Dame.

This old dawg fan is happy to see the enthusiasm of the Hawaii fans. I confess I’m not up to speed on the history of Hawaii football, but it is my understanding that this is a first for your program. Good luck and enjoy New Oleans.
If nothing else, New Orleans is chock full of world class restaurants. Hope y’all brought some pants with elastic in the waistband.
As far as the game, who the hell knows? On paper, Dawgs should win big. Of course, the game isn’t played on paper, is it?
There are some key points that I would like to make:
Hawaii, if nothing else, will come into this game with a lot of enthusiasm. If enthusiasm didn’t count, Richt wouldn’t have okay’d the td celebration in Fla or the blackout against Auburn, would he.
UGA has a history of coming out flat against teams that they SHOULD beat and letting them stay in the game longer than they should. Do that against a quick strike offense and you might find yourself down several td’s before the dust clears.
UGA has played a very soft coverage all year long. Add to that, there have been lapses in open field tackling in the secondary. All of which plays to Hawaii’s strengths.
I dont think Hawaii has played anyone who has the athleticism of UGA’s linebacker and defensive ends. Nobody has had any success turning the corner on UGA this year.
UGA has a pretty fair quarterback, in case you haven’t heard. They’ve put up some big points against some might good defenses.
The key to this game, IMHO, is UGA’s running game. Put together some long, clock eating drives and you keep Hawaii’s offense off the field. Sounds like a plan to me.

Best way is to lead by example and support the Dawgs by building them up instead of resorting to the classless bigoted crap cowards are so fond of posting anonymously on blogs. Just ask Mark Richt how he would like to see UGA fans support the team. I guarantee 100% class.

Yes the rest of the nation will be rooting for the big H. If MR had not whined so much and dragged the Dawg nation down with him because he wasn’t in the BCS championship game it might be different. Being respectful of your opponent and being grateful for a great opportunity just isn’t in the Dawg Nation’s DNA this year. If UGA looses the rest of the nation plus the BCS won’t be very kind.

LOL, seems like every week there’s some retard posting under the name “dawgs will lose”. Maybe it’s a good luck charm, since the winning streak stands at 6.
So keep posting, you might actually be useful this week, unlike in the rest of your pathetic life.
Also, pointing out how retardedly inconsistent the polls are isn’t “whining”, no matter how much you haters like to think so. But go ahead and repeat it for the 5000th time, maybe if you say it enough it’ll come true.

If Richt is out of gimmicks we may have a hard time. He needs to get his head out of the clouds and make the boys play football, not hype and hoopla. Hawaii should be comming to play football. Hopefully Ga is not playing in the quarter to much.

I’m in NOLA right now and I see Dawg fans everywhere I go, all over the city. I used to live here and we’ve been everywhere but the French Quarter. Experienced Dawg fans know that there is much more to this town than the Quarter. Hawaii folks would not know where else to go but the Quarter.

Varsity team versus a JV…check out the recruiting classes on rivals.com for the past five years at each school…the practice squad at UGA could handle Hawaii. Glad Hawaii is having a good time now, because it will be a nightmare for them once the game starts. When it comes down to it, football is about size and speed - can’t hide either of them. Hawaii couldn’t beat ANY SEC team this year, and they will get smoked tomorrow night by one of the best. Simple math.

Chip,
Why the 2 totally opposite points of view from New Orleans French Quarter? Did you happen to read your blog partner in crime, Tony Barnhart’s blog today?
You two guys paint totally opposite pictures. Who is telling the truth here? In case anyone missed it….here is Tony’s blog comments on the fans in NO (French Qtr):
” Hawaii’s here and their fans are great, but Georgia OWNS this town for the next two days: It was a Sunday night and a couple of our favorite places, like the Napoleon House, were closed. But that did not slow down the Bulldog Nation, who are already out in full force and barking their way through town. These guys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, already have their game face on. They want a win over Hawaii and a preseason Top Five for 2008. They will be ready tomorrow night.”
Now which one is it Chip? You both go to the same place and yet the disparity in opinion. Something tells me that the truth lies in the middle?
What is the story? Maybe next time you should compare notes and get the story right. Otherwise, what is the point of either blog when they may be erroneous!
BTW…To all the foul mouthed haters of UGA on here:
You haters can disparage the Dawgs all you want but you can’t dispute the facts. But your philosophy is: Don’t let facts get in the way of your opinions!
GOOOOOOOOOOOO DAWGS!!!!

UGA needs to totally demolish the Warriors in order to maintain any shred of respect, especially since this is being played in the SEC’s backyard.
They need to beat the Warriors by at least 40 points. Anything less than that would be considered a complete and utter humiliation - might as well be a loss. Especially after whining about belonging in the BCS CG.
Beat the Warriors by 40 and collectively, we’ll say, thats what we EXPECTED you to do - no big deal. Anything less than that, UGA is a second-rate POSER of a team.

Playing in the SEC backyard? I think we are playing in the west 40. All the fans from Augusta GA that I know, were leaving today. I did Nawlins for four days in 1980. Getting up at 6:00 am after going to bed at 5:00 am after beating Notre Dame was one of the most difficult experiences of my life. And I was in my early twenties back then. Four days in Nawlins now would put me on the liver transplant list.
Chip you are a better journalist than this topic. Emotion by fans is one thing, emotion by the team is another. Hey if emotion by the fans won games, we would have won more than three games in the last fifteen years in the Gator Bowl.
Knowshon hurt, well we have a couple of pretty good backups at that position. Both may play on Sundays in a year or two.
I think the Warriors score some points, just not as many as the Dawgs. Just a haole point of view.
Our DE’s will get to know Colt so well they will exchange Christmas cards next year.
I say spot em two touchdowns just to make it fair. They flew half the world just to get here. Show some good Southern hospitality. Then kick their butts.

Yes we can play with the boys in the SEC. The SEC is overrated… Heck Fla . State in which their program has been on the decline since the dawgs beat them in the Sugar a few years back, almost beat Kentucky without 36 players. Pathetic! My georgia boy Cullen Harper is better than that spooning Stafford kid. We lead Auburn 7 - 3 at the half and Cullen is just starting to warm up.Cant wait to play the Dawgs again because that game the dawgs won a few years ago 30 - 0 was a FLUKE! Well let me get this right. The Dawgs should have been playing for the Championships but they claim to have been humped out of the that game. Instead the game has LSU and OHIO. Now if the HA team beats the Dawgs, and they go undefeated, then they should be crowned the CHAMPONS since no one else has gone undefeated this year. So all you Dawg fans, SEC, ACC, powerhouse whinners better hope you win because if you don’t, this is a definate case for the HA to be the College Football Champions. It is also a rason for a “PLAYOFF FORMAT” Perk up those ears, get rid of all the purina dog chow out your rectum and “LET’S BRING IT ON.” If you lose, the WARRIORS are this years CHAMPIONS

Award winning stuff my man. Let us know if you’ve got any more “vibes” to share with us. I’m on the edge of my seat. rolls eyes
The media coverage for this game has been an absolute joke. They might as well be calling it the Hawaii Bowl. You media geeks can’t even feign objectivity any more. As soon as Georgia stones this patsy posers you won’t have a single positive thing to say about it. Just more criticism and negativity. Richt had a hair out of place or something. Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to you all,
Well I have been in NO since Saturday and I have seen lots of other Dawg fans like myself having a good time. I have had a lot of friendly banter with Hawaii fans as well. This should be an interesting game and as oldtimer pointed out on paper our Dawgs should win but ballgames are not played on paper they are played on the field. IMHO if the Dawgs come ready to play which is what I am hearing from a close friend of mine on Georgia’s staff then we will win. Also another good sign is Lee Corso picked us to lose this morning.
Go Dawgs and Go SEC 4-0 so far.

The media seems to be making a lot of this ‘dance’ the ‘Bows’ do…if this is part of the ‘emotional edge’ you’re talking about then I suggest a couple of ways to handle it. First, and this is clearly not the preferred way, the Dogs simply watch them do their little routine, then turn their backs and ‘drop trow’ - a ‘mass-moon’ would send a rather crass message but pretty much covers how I feel about it. Then again, and if the officials ‘flag ‘em’ for unsportsmanlike conduct for the throat-slashing motion, I say decline the penalty and get on with it. After all, the first ‘foreigners’ that this dance was used on, simply ‘opened fire’ and brought a quick end to the silly mess - sorta like the first Indiana Jones movie…only in our case we’ll be firing on offense and hitting on defense.
Go Dawgs!

Man, the quality of these posts suck. Good sign that most hard core fans are in NO. Chip, by the amount you have been posting & writing this week and the depths of these blog postings (“Hawaii is excited!”), either you are really busy covering the Lady Dawgs in basketball or you are hitting the big Easy pretty hard yourself. Hope you are having fun - you’ve earned it this year.
By the way, Colt Brennan is only the second coolest named QB we play this year. Still think John Parker Wilson wins that award. Plus, this ex-convict (felon at that!) was originally at Colorado before he was in the center of the sex scandle that got Gary Barnett fired. Colt is a thug with a good arm. (Michael Vick comparisons?)
Dawgs will play a solid game. We intercept Colt twice. Our LB’s being sick / hurt allows some undercoverage passes but we will show these Rainbow receivers what it means to get hit SEC-style. Game within 10 at half-time. Dawgs by 20 when the clock expires. 41-21, Dawgs win.

Dawg88: I was with Tony when we walked through the Quarter and found Napolean’s to be closed, etc. And he and I had the conversation about how the Hawaii fans were viewing this game as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity while it’s almost old hat with the Dogs’ fans. That said, Hawaii is never going to outdraw Georgia or any other SEC team, in New Orleans. There are going to be way more Georgia fans there tonight than Hawaii fans and when they get drunk they bark. So Tony and I did not have totally disparate views. You also need to remember — we’re two different people. Not everybody views the world the same way.
Obnoxious Georgia fan: I could not think of a more appropriate handle than the one you’ve chosen. I didn’t write anything about the way I thought the game was going to turn out (for the record I expect UGA to win quite comfortably). I simply shared an observation about how Hawaii fans are viewing this game and many believe it’s the biggest thing since statehood. Got it? …
On a lighter note, saw Buddy Guy at the House of Blues last night and it was the most incredible blues show I’ve ever seen. I think somebody said he’s 68 now but the man still rips it like he was 30. It was a great way to ring in the New Year.
Happy New Year to all you guys. New blog coming up shortly.
