UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Searels speechless about O-line’s play
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Just came from the Butts-Mehre Building and what essentially Georgia’s last practice in Athens. I say essentially because they’ll come back Friday morning and have a real quick workout, then disperse just as quickly to their respective homes for the holidays.
With the Bulldogs’ work here pretty much completed, it was an extremely laid back coach Mark Richt that greeted reporters after practice in the team meeting room. The only news of the day was that there was no news regarding academic casualties.
“Everybody’s going [to the Sugar Bowl,” Richt said. “It’s awsome. It fired me up. Just got the word today.”
After getting some comments from Richt on Kregg Lumpkin for a story I’m working on, the conversation turned to offensive line coach Stacy Searels. As he has all season, Richt just raved about the job Searels did with the offensive line, which featured three freshman starters. “It’s obvious he’s good at what he does,” Richt said of the first year coach.
Richt said Searels was deserving of at least a mention for the Frank Broyles National Assistant Coach of the Year award but nominations for such things have to go out early in the season. At the time, both Searels and the Bulldogs were still trying to figure each other out.
In retrospect, though, Georgia and Richt were very fortunate to be able to pluck Searels from LSU and bring him to Athens. The Bulldogs had lost previous O-line coach Neil Callaway to the head coaching job at UAB and, with the rebuilding job that had to be done, finding a good replacement was critical for this season.
“It was a crucial hire with all the youngsters we had,” Richt admitted. “But if you’re going to hire a new coach it wasn’t a bad time because we had just two seniors coming back. And I think Stacy would tell you he probably couldn’t have done it without [senior center] Fernando [Velasco]. He was a really big help.”
We’d like to tell you more about Coach Searels and the two true freshmen he coached up this season but Searels doesn’t do interviews and he doesn’t allow true freshmen to either, even 12 games into the season. But all you need to know is right there in black-in-white in the standings and stats.
So what do you think of the job Searels did? Any problem with his philosophy of not talking to the media or not letting the young pups be interviewed? And do you think the Dogs would have done as well had Callaway still been at the helm of the offensive line?
Don’t hesitate to ask questions. I’ll be sure to answer. In that regard, we’ll be getting into Hawaii more in the coming week.

I love it that he doesn’t talk to the media. Gives him an aura of mystique. And I love that he doesn’t let the freshmen talk either. Teaches humility.

Obviously, Searels is a large improvement on Callaway. If he doesn’t like talking to the press, fine. If he doesn’t want his freshman talking to the press, fine. Hiring Searels was the second-best move Richt has made; the first was replacing himself as offensive coordinator with Bobo, who has emphasized the running game (with great success) far more than Richt would have.

Chip -
Saw the info on the o-line for next year earlier this week. Great stuff.
If you had to make a call right now, would you say Tripp or Vance at the other tackle spot? And is Anderson really the beast they make him out to be.
No doubt this group will be a strength next year and beyond.

searles did a great job.the old adage is that it takes two years to build a good o lineman, but just look at trinton and boling, true freshmen and playing great ball.could callaway have done as well?who knows?uab must think he can.i have no problems with searles’ press blackout.o-line is a difficult job and there is a lot to learn.these kids don’t need distractions.

Max, I agree except one point. Searels was the 3rd best move. Originally pressing hard to keep Rodney Garner as the D line coach and recruiting coordinator was his 2nd best move at worst. Might have been his best move to date. People don’t understand the impact and importance of keeping Rodney Garner. Just ask Auburn. They are constantly trying to get him to come home to Auburn. But I think RG is very happy now in Athens and works for the best man in the business.

Skydawg— I completely agree about Garner!!!
Yes we are better today because of Searels than we would have been with Calloway. One main reason his Calloway’s line seemed to always have shoulder injuries. Which has been non existent this year with Searels. He really knows what he is doing and understands the game. Thinks him and Bobo work well together on the game plan and execution of the plays.

Nola Dawg: Tough question but, since you prefaced it with “if you had to make the call now,” I’d say Vance gets the nod. Vance has quietly gotten better and better this season and will end it as the No. 6 lineman capable of coming in at either guard or tackle. He ended up having a very good year… . Tripp has a tremendous upside but he just has so far to go in terms of learning this system and bulking back up into a full-grown tackle. Either way I think both will play extensively… .
NOLA and shane: By the same token it’s tough to say much about Little and Strickland because Searels doesn’t handicap them for us and we don’t get to see them practice other than a little drill work. The general word is Little, since he got over his wrist injury, is a great looking prospect but needs some kicks in the butt as far as hustle and get-after-it attitude. Same goes for Anderson. But both are difference-makers. They say Strickland, now over a foot problem, is a ready-made lineman… . There’s no question the future is bright on the line.

Serales has done the best coaching job on the UGA staff.. (NOT taking anything away from the others as Gardner did a great jog getting the Dline to gel too)..
We were so young but talented.. Too bad it too until the 4th 1/4 in the Vandy game to gel on the oline.. Amazing what 2 more seconds can do for Stafford in the pocket.. The future is very bright!!

Really good blog chip. I think Vince Vance is a beast and with a solid year of D-I ball, he should clearly be a starter. I was looking at the 2008 depth chart as it would stand as of right now… it’s ridiculous. Road trips to Carolina, Arizona State, Auburn, LSU and the trip to Jax make next year seem tough schedule wise, but my god what a team we will have (on paper) in ‘09. We’ll be the most upperclassmen loaded team in all the land!

I think Nick Saban said it best when he turned down a scheduled interview in the Spring. Something about not having time for this stuff. The maturation of the O-Line has been down right remarkable, thanks Stacy—although I know you ain’t readin’ this. Garner is one of the most important parts of the coaching staff and that has been true for years. Stability, cohesion, success! No wonder we keep reeling in top-flight recruiting classes.
Chip, I remember reading somewhere during Spring practice that Searls was anything but verbally restrained when getting after his guys. From your conversations with the two senior linemen, what impression do you get about his style, how the players respond to it, and do you know if he was able to calm down a bit after the line started to gel? Just curious.

If Coach Searles wants to be a mime, so be it. The man has done an awesome job. With him and Rodney coaching the D-line, our lines are in great hands. No I don’t think Coach Callaway could have done as good a job with this group, just my opinion. I am really looking forward to watching the unsung heros, the linemen playing in the Sugar Bowl.

I have been saying for weeks that Searels is the MVP for UGA this year. I could not stand Callaway; the way he used up our young O-Linemen was criminal. So many never made it to their Junior years before they were out of football with cronic shoulder injuries - Josh Brock, Bartley Miller to name two, but there were so many more.
As for his media-shyness, no problem, just win baybee!
Chip If I had a question dealing with the O-Line, it would be - Do you believe that UGA will start three Sophmores and two Freshmen in the O-Line next year? And who are the freshmen likely to be - Anderson & who? How about Chris Little (who isn’t real little)? How about Kiante Tripp (a rising RS Soph) or Josh Davis, Keven Perez & Vince Vance? We are okay, aren’t we!!?

I’m super impressed with the job the O-line has done, but let’s not forget that UGA was (along with Auburn) projected to have the best recruiting year in that facet of the offense last year. It’s a combination of their talent and a very capable coach who got them to play to the skill level they’re capable of. It definitely bodes well for the future if the Dawgs can keep him as our coach but he obviously has a very bright future. Congratulations to him and his players.

Without question, Searles is a HUGE upgrade from Callaway. I always felt that Callaway was the weakest link on the staff and not a factor on the recruiting trail. Concerning no interview policy, I am only concerned with production from O-Line, not quotes for the newspaper. The offensive line is beginning to take shape for the next 3-4 years and looks very promising. SEC championships are always won at the line of scrimmage.

Remember this blue chip’s name: Ben Jones… O-line from Bama state. He’s an old school hard nose linemen. Don’t be surprise if he works his way in with in the rotation with Chris Davis or Kevin Perez at center or either guard position right away.
Coach Searels has done a super job coaching up the youngsters. Yep, the o-line is looking pretty awesome in the future.
Chip, what about my man Brandon Wood? I’ve noticed in one of the games he was playing at DT. Did they move him back inside? I rather see him at DE… b/c of his speed/power and low to the ground.
Also, why did we or they drop Cinci out of our ‘08 sked? We picked up Central Michigan instead. I hate to see that we dropped a BCS team for a non BCS team. Any info on that?

ugadawg hit the nail on the head about the shoulder injuries. Why none this year? Must be technique. I have said it all season long that the O-line wasn’t going to be a problem this year. Searles did an excellent job at LSU and has proven himself this year with a very young line. Greater thing ahead. Maybe it is a good thing he doesn’t do interviews. Hell there are head coaches that shouldn’t be doing interviews. Good for Searles.

The core of any good team is the line. Coach Searels has done a masterful job at taking a bunch of younsters and turning them into SEC beasts. These guys are gonna hit the weights in the off season and with the red shirt backups and freshmen coming along be one of if not the best in the nation. I hope Coach Searels continues to keep a low profile and stays at UGA for his career. Now, if we can just get Grambling or some other school to get Eason out of here, we’ll be doing fine.

Coach Searles seems to have been a great upgrade. I think Herbstreit called him the best in the land. I saw that John Eason is considering a move. I also saw that Michigan just fired all their assistant coaches, and their WR’s coach, Cambell I think, is pretty good. I wonder if that would be an upgrade as well?

I was fortunate enough to be at Appalachian State when Coach Searels was the O-Line Coach there in the late 90’s.
He made me a believer when we started a True Freshman at Guard in the ‘99 Auburn game, threw the ball about 30 times, and gave up zero sacks.
Working with the team a few years later, and watching him in practice, he was a valuable influence on not only the O-Line, but the entire team. He accepts nothing less than the best, but will also do what he needs to to get you there.
I knew UGA was getting a top notch coach…perhaps the best O-Line coach in the country…when they hired him.
Winning begins in the trenches, on both sides of the ball. Once the local NFL team realizes that, they might start winning too.

Everyone is excited about how well the OL developed this year and Stacy and the players deserve all the credit they are getting.
Anyone know how the backups are looking at safety? Quinton Banks, Donovan Baldwin, and John Knox would figure for some playing time. Banks seemed to get some PT on special teams this year… anyone know how Knox looked in practice this Fall? Will Baldwin hold them off and get some playing time at safety?
I was wrong about being concerned about the depth at LB going into this recruiting season. Dent and Currie are playing much better (sooner) than I ever imagined. With Hebron coming back this position is really loaded with five players returning with experience and a 5 star RS Soph in Hebron trying to get on the field.
Will Hebron get a look at Safety this Spring?

Searles was one of the missing pieces to help us move from being a very good team to a NC team (program). For whatever reason through selection, coaching, execution the OL was not as dominant as it should have been. If you asked most Dawg fans the OL unit would be singled out along with the WRs as one of the underperforming units on the team for the 2002-2006 yrs under CMR. It appears that CSS and Bobo have a real good chemistry and the playcalling didnt cause the OL to falter. In years past it seemed that the playcalling (CMR) and OL (Callaway) were not on the same page. I see bright days ahead with CSS on the staff.

Larry M: Coutu is fine and has been completely cleared for everything. So is Kregg Lumpkin, though it remains to be seen how much work he’ll get at tailback in the Sugar Bowl. At the very least he’ll be on the No. 1 kickoff return team and be available as backup help at tailback should Moreno or Brown be sidelined for any reason… . LB Marcus Washington aggravated a chronic ankle injury in practice but we’re told he’ll be ready for the game. WR sean Bailey had some postseason arthroscopy but will be able to play as well. That’s all I can think of for now. Should be pretty healthy.

Searels did an outstanding job this year. I’m OK with him not talking to the media, just build good lines, men, and recruit well. I think this year proves he was an upgrade over Callaway. The only ? I have is, how many more OL recruits do we want this year? Any Jucos being considered? I think we need 2 more in addition to the 3 already verbally committed. This is considering our flaky past on the OL with regards to recruiting, injury, quitting, and academics.

yellowblood (or whoever you are)
I read the blogs on both pages and have seen your childish posts on the Tech blog and shame on me, even laughed at a few . Now it looks like you have picked a fight and managed to drag it over onto this page. We can get pi$$ed at the troll but if you would grow up and shut up, we could all go back to reading and posting about the matter at hand instead of having to read all this crap.
The troll offered a truce and I (and I am sure many others) hope you a smart enough to take the deal and put your tickle pile obsession behind you. It looks like the fight will be fought here and we don’t need it here.

Yeah, whatever INDawg. Your analysis is dead wrong! I have never been to the Tech blog in my life. They are not my childish posts. I merely responded to that tool on our blog. You, are obviously the only fool dumb enough to let him bother you. The answer is to scroll a few lines further knowing that he is the one wasting his time and not you but I guess you’re not that clever. Also, don’t forget the real yellowblood was hardly more than a troll or our blog in the first place. Go ahead lash out at me. That’s what this dolt wants.

SayItAintSo,
WHAT???? I was not directing anything at you or responding to your post. I was directing my post to the fool yellowblood that has now messed up this blog by posting on the other blogs. You obviously read something I didn’t write. I do read the Tech blogs from time to time and can see where he has now managed to bring his fight to this page.
Whatever. The guy has a chance to end it and I hope he does because I am tired of the troll M.S. already.

Searels is incredibly talented and that’s why he could afford to make a lateral move from LSU and join Georgia. Ask Saban and Miles how good he is.
He is a genuine family man who recently lost his dad. He simply wanted to move closer to his mother (NW Georgia).
But he should have played for the Dawgs as well. I’m still upset that Dooley didn’t visit the Searels family (in 83) until AFTER Pat Dye had already stolen him from under our noses.
He is a great “fit” with Richt and his staff and teaches the “little things” that obviously make a big difference. He expects (and gets) a lot more from his players because he leads them by example. He is consumed with helping them achieve their goals so he can achieve his.
He deserves everything he gets! And that includes a free pass from Terence Moore and some of the other idiots at the AJC.

Fake, I can respect your reply.
Yellow, quit acting like a dork and talk real football.
Fake, if Yellow stops, I expect you to live up to the Varsity Convention. If he does not, let me know, and I will rain on him with the former FANS OF CHAN.
All, this gay bashing has got to stop.

Fake, just checked the Tech blogs. Man it is lonely out there. You are over and above anything that yellowblood has hurt your feelings. No one goes on the Tech blogs. Not saying it as hate, just the truth.
If someone insults you, and I mean insult, you fire away ten times the amount. Dude, fire back as I do, and get over it. No need to bash gay people unless you are a closet queen who cannot deal with it. I really do not think that is true. Fire away with pithy commments. I would love to discuss football, not spooning nor tickle piles.

The Success of UGA this season is a direct result of Coach Searels.
Top 10 Hawaii beat a Final BCS Top 25 ranked team, Boise State, who represents the WAC (0-1) tomorrow night in a bowl game. Hawaii has a good defense and is ranked in the Top 10 of every Poll including Top 10 team AP Poll and Top 10 team USA Today Coaches’ Poll. Hawaii QB Colt Brennan is 3rd in the nation in every measure of this year’s best college football player, and he has the only 3 receivers over 1,000 yards on 1 team. Hawaii is undefeated at 12-0. Georgia will be the 8th SEC team of 9 SEC teams in Bowl Games, 7 of which are New Year’s Eve or later and is in the BCS Sugar Bowl for the 3rd time in the last 6 seasons under Coach Richt - who is now 71-19 for a .788 Winning Percentage.
There are discussions about the .41 percent GSR (Graduation Success Rate) issued this 2007 year by the NCAA for the football players at UGA. This is a 4-year calculation for recruits who came in in the 1997 season. That was Jim Donnan’s recruiting class and covers the 1997-2000 seasons’ recruits, which also are only Jim Donnan’s recruits - the entire team of which are in The NFL League. In fact, only Miami 46, Ohio State 44 and Florida State 44 have more in The NFL on Opening Day NFL Rosters this year than UGA in 4th in the nation.

There is no penalty to Coach Richt for what happened in 1997. Just want to be clear on that because I have, as I said, heard discussions otherwise.
UGA had 15 football players earn their degree two weeks ago in the Graduation Ceremonies at Sanford Stadium. And, UGA has been ranked in the Final AP Poll now 11 consecutive years, more than any other college in America. Coach Richt has recruited the No. 2 recruiting class for a Number 4 Ranked Football team today in both the AP and The Coaches Poll, and has a great football team and program both on the field, in strength of schedule, in attendance (only 4 with greater attendance), and in the classroom.
By the way, the NCAA demands that every recruit be handed this APR. The GSR is not involved, and now you know why when you hear folks try to make it sound as if it is what is important. I am not down-playing the fact that both Georgia in the SEC and Georgia Tech in the ACC have the worst GSR in both conferences, but again that is not what The NCAA considers important – now, is it ?
Also, yellowblood, Georgia Tech lost 6 Football Scholarships for 2007-2008 football season because Georgia Tech is on PROBATION in Football in the NCAA Major Infractions Database for 2007-2008 Football Season for cheating in academics. Academics ? Great topic for Georgia Tech in football yellowblood.

The Measure that the NCAA uses now to actually show the progress of the current coach, and to have some meaning to today’s football players, is called the APR Academic Progress Rate which was released also this year April 30, 2007 and shows that UGA is 963 to 959 for Georgia Tech, for example - also an NCAA multi-year running average for Coach Richt in fact.

This APR is the one the NCAA uses to impose penalties against a school for having poor academics of its football team.

Cuz,
Thanks for taking on the challenge.
I may have been over the top but I hope it will serve the purpose. yellowblood has been there most all season and it didn’t matter the subject, he would have at least one or two posts. Obviously, I have only been firing back for a week or two. I could re-post some of his posts but they are not appropriate and were already removed by the AJC. Although my posts may have hinted at sexual orientation or suggested under aged drinking by an athlete, they never went any farther. The link posted may have suggested a little more but it was your choice to use it or not.
A deal is a deal and you will never see or hear from me again unless yellowblood posts (obviously I have no control over what name others use). I will even leave the new suggested chant alone. I will honor the Varsity Convention.
Everyone have a Merry Christmas and a good time in N,O,
Matt Stafford, over and out (I hope)

Hey ………..BuLLdawg,
The scholarship/probation issue at GT is now a thing of the past. Much like the four issues UGA had with their program.
I guess that’s another stat in football where you have the advantage, four NCAA major infractions to our one. Granted your four have nothing to do with Richt but ours had nothing to do with Johnson or Gailey. Furthermore, we brought the issue to the attention of the NCAA when it was discovered.

Chip?
Why does the AJC continue to “harp” on Mark Richt’s salary? Is the newspaper trying to cause a rift between Richt and the University? What is the possible motive for constantly mentioning his salary as compared to other coaches?

About Stacy Searles, An All-American football player from Auburn under a blue collar guy named Pat Dye. I think he knows hard work will get you to the top, he was opening holes for Bo Jackson so he knows technique. As to why he is in Athens, he is from Georgia and wants to be near his lovely mother and family. Go Dogs!!

I have no problem with Searles not doing interviews. The media typically screw up and twist so much of what is really said that if someone takes that route, he loses no respect in my eyes. Good policy with the frosh, too. They need to stay focused. The success in spite of the greenness speaks volumes for his ability.

Stacy is from little Trion in NW Georgia about 25 miles north of Rome. The Trion High School mascot is a Bulldog so he continues with the tradition. Everyone there is proud of him for the responsibility he has now helping the bigger DAWGS!! He is a fine man from a fine family. We just wished he had played his college football at UGA instead of at Auburn….but we’ll forgive him for that one slip up!! Go DAWGS and GO STACY!!

Hey Chip, happy holidays to you and your family! Any word on what position Brandon Miller will play in the Sugar Bowl? D end or LB? Also, how much weight lifting does Coach Van Halenger require these guys to do in preperations for the bowl game?

gosh, it’s great to read all the good remarks about stacy searels. i have known stacy since he was a baby. he might not do interviews because you can’t depend on the press to print things exactly as you say them and they might change the meaning of what he has to say and as far as freshmen doing interviews, they might not be experienced enough to give a positive interview. i have a grandson that is in his second year at georgia and he is so excited to be going to new orleans. GO DAWGS! i hope stacy is a dawg coach for many years to come.
