UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Moreno lived up to lofty billing

I’m not going to say I told you so because, the truth is, just about everybody was talking about Knowshon Moreno even before the season started. But what also is true is that nobody really knew for sure what Georgia had in Moreno until he was unleashed during the regular season.

I found it very intriguing when, as I was doing some research for another story I’m working on for our Sugar Bowl coverage, I stumbled across the story wrote on Moreno that ran the day before Georgia’s season opener against Oklahoma State. The excitement about Moreno was palpable even then. Of course, he was the leading rusher against the Cowboys — a relatively modest 70 yards on 20 carries not including long run off a screen pass — but we still couldn’t be sure Moreno would turn out the dynamic tailback he eventually was.

Anyway I thought I’d share that story with you guys again here today because I found it particularly revealing knowing what we know now — 1,273 rushing yards and several freshman All-America honors later. If you don’t feel like reading the whole thing again, just skip on down to the comments section.

Meanwhile, for the sake of discussion, let’s hear your theories on the maturation of Knowshon Moreno. Lest we forget, if not for the injuries to Kregg Lumpkin and Thomas Brown, Moreno may not have gotten the opportunity to prove himself to the extent that he eventually did.

So do you think he would have eventually surpassed Brown and Lumpkin anyway? Do any of you think Moreno suffered some from overuse as the end of the season approached (remember his struggles in the Georgia Tech game)? And, on that note, Lumpkin is coming back for the Sugar Bowl. Should the Dogs jump right back into an equitable three-back rotation between him and Brown and Moreno?

Let’s hear your thoughts on that and other theories you might have. In the meantime, for your reminiscing pleasure, here’s that story on Moreno that ran on Aug. 31:

Back with a ‘Wow’ factor

Raves for Moreno: Though he hasn’t yet carried in a game, his running has seized the attention of teammates and coaches.

CHIP TOWERS / Staff ctowers@ajc.com

Athens —- It seems everybody around Athens has a Knowshon Moreno story. Georgia players and coaches like to tell one in particular.

“I think it was the spring of last year, ” quarterback Matthew Stafford said. “I threw a little screen to him, or a pitchout wide or something like that, and he ended up one-on-one with one of our corners. Knowshon broke him down with a little juke move and then jumped straight over him and kept running.

“Never broke stride. Took it to the house.”

The cornerback’s identity was withheld by teammates to protect his dignity.

“Several times in practice he’ll make a cut here or a cut there or jump over somebody or run somebody over, ” fellow running back Kregg Lumpkin said. “You never know what he’s going to do.”

Even running backs coach Tony Ball, who has tried to steer clear of the hype surrounding the former New Jersey high school player of the year, is hard-pressed to quell his excitement.

“He’s always doing things that make you go, ‘Wow, ’ ” Ball said. “The thing that got my attention was the other day when we were working on conditioning.

“He was coming back from one of his reps and, all of a sudden, he does a one-hand cartwheel and finishes it with a somersault. It was like over my head. With pads on. Now that was impressive.”

But lost in all the buzz that has surrounded Moreno since he arrived in Athens last summer is the fact that he still hasn’t played in a game for the Bulldogs. Buried on the depth chart behind Lumpkin, Thomas Brown and Danny Ware, he redshirted as a freshman last season.

All that will finally change Saturday when Moreno suits up for Georgia in its season opener against Oklahoma State.

He remains behind Brown and Lumpkin but, as Ball said enthusiastically, “Oh, yeah, he’s gonna play.”

Brims with confidence on field

Coaches and teammates describe Moreno’s on-field demeanor as confident, almost cocky. They say he’s even a bit of a trash talker.

“On the field, you might say he’s arrogant, ” Ball said. “Really, he’s not. He’s just a confident athlete. When he first got here, because of his upbeat attitude and his energy and his confidence, some of the guys were rubbed the wrong way. But that’s the kind of personality that he has.”

But when it comes to talking about himself, Moreno is as humble as a monk.

“I’m just going out there and working hard every day, trying to do whatever I can to help the team, ” he said.

As for remaining behind Brown and Lumpkin on the depth chart, Moreno said, “They’re extremely hard workers. Whoever is the best guy is going to play. Whoever is preparing right, whoever’s doing what they have to do during practice, that’s who plays and that’s up to the coaches.”

Moreno grew up in Belford, N.J., a little hamlet just across Raritan Bay from New York. He was raised by his grandparents, Mildred and William McQueen. Mildred —- aka “Granny” —- is a retired contract worker for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and she ran a tight ship based on punctuality, respect and education.

“I guess you could say he was a typical suburban kid, ” she said. “We just tried to give him a suitable home and the love and financial support he needed to excel in all his endeavors.”

Moreno’s initial endeavors included art and school plays. Finally, at age 12, Moreno’s mother let him go out for football.

“I remember going to his first Pop Warner game, ” Mildred McQueen said. “He had what I thought was a pretty good game for his first one. But his team lost and he didn’t like that at all. I just remember him being so upset. That’s when I first realized how competitive he was.”

Liked Georgia’s tailback tradition

Moreno didn’t lose a lot after that. By the time he left Middletown South High, he’d scored a state-record 128 touchdowns, racked up the second-most rushing yards in New Jersey history (6,268) and led his team to three state titles.

Georgia, which had Moreno in its camp the summer before his senior season, beat out Boston College, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and others for his services.

Moreno liked the Bulldogs’ winning tradition, their history of top tailbacks and playing in the SEC. He knew that others would be ahead of him in the backfield but he didn’t mind the competition —- or redshirting.

“He concentrated on his schoolwork and tried to do everything his coaches asked him to do, ” his grandmother said. “He definitely wasn’t angry about it.”

Moreno’s mother, Varashon, his high school coach, Steve Antonucci, and McQueen will be in attendance Saturday, when Moreno could play a big role.

“I couldn’t give you a number, but if he’s making plays and gets into a flow and he’s making things happen, then we’re gonna keep him going, ” Ball said.

Coach Mark Richt preaches cautious optimism.

“What if he goes in there and the first time he gets hit —- really gets hit —- the ball goes flying up in the air?” the coach asked. “I’m not saying he’s a fumbler, but we don’t know. Let’s just give him the ball first and see what he can do.”

Tech’s overcompensation to stop Moreno was the reason Stafford was able to run for that touchdown. It’s also why Brown lit them up for 130 yards. And let us not forget Moreno forcing a fumble on what would have been a sure Tech touchdown. The dude is a baller and a WINNER. Even when he isn’t lighting up the stat sheet he’s helping us win. I hope to see him for another 3 seasons but I’m not counting on it.

Unless you are playing for the MNC, I always felt that a bowl trip was to reward the players for having a good or great season, and should be played to have fun. In that vain, I would give 90% of the playing time to the seniors to thank them for all they have given to us. CMR, however, says that he plays to win in bowl games; that being true would dictate that Moreno gets 90% of all the playing time. Will be fun to watch, eith way.

Moreno is a gamer for sure. Let’s not forget that Thomas Brown had a great senior season when he was healthy.

I think this season proved that rotating two backs or just featuring one back works a lot better than a 3-back rotation. We saw Moreno and Brown get into the flow of games this year, and the results were impressive.

What’s really exciting is that Bobo seems more comfortable committing to the running game than did Richt. To his credit Richt does not seem to meddle much with Bobo’s game plans. I’ll be dreaming of a Moreno-King rotation in ‘08 for the next 8-9 months.

I knew Moreno was going to be a huge success when I first saw him spooning with Matt. It was magical!!! The fit was like, well, two spoons. Not like Barnes, I’m not surprised he left. He just didn’t seem to spoon like the rest of our QB’s.

*Lest we forget, if not for the injuries to Kregg Lumpkin and Thomas Brown, Moreno may not have gotten the opportunity to prove himself to the extent that he eventually did. *

This has been my matra since the UT game.. I hate tht KL & TB were sidelined (it is a physical & controlled violence game).. Great to have the ‘ace in the hole’ back that is KNOWSHON MORENO!!

I believe Moreno gets 20 totes, TB 10 & KL 5ish… Southerland will get 5 too..

On another note: Do not discount the maturation on the O-Line.. They have improved by leaps & bounds since the OSU/SC games..

The sUGAr Bowl is to WIN Baby.. Not pump up the Seniors!! What team goes thru the motions in a BCS bowl game??? If you are UGA Tech, then Yes, play your Sr’s.. But even they will play for next season (remember last season Bennett started over Ball!)

Go Moreno & Go Dawgs!!!

With all of the excitement about Knowshon and indeed it’s truly due,we need to keep in mind that we also have a RB that was at one point considered the best RB recruit in the country. For all of the success Knowshon has had, I believe Caleb King will have alot to say this coming year. That bodes well for both of them because the competition between them and the resulting devastating running game we might get out of this will benefit the whole team. Imagine the opportunities for the WR’s with the addition of the 2nd rated WR in the country. We may have a killer schedule next year, but we also have all the guns we need to grab that National Championship. Git ‘er done!

BLACKOUT!!!

I would like to see Georgia open up a sizeable lead by half-time so that most of the 3rd qtr and all of the 4th qtr are given to the senior RB’s Brown and especially Lump. That would be my ‘best case scenario’. Knowshon get his 100 yards by halftime and let the others pound and pound the game away.

That being said, if we do NOT have a big lead, I’d like for Knowshon to get his reps and improve for next year. Neither Brown, nor Lump are going to be drafted high (if at all) for the NFL, so they really have nothing/no one to impress. We love them and are thankful for all they’ve done for the Dawgs over the years!

Go Dawgs!!

Shut up Chip. Again you’re the genius after the fact.

You were one of the people who was saying there was no need to play Moreno (I’m not confusing him with King) earlier this season while he was sitting behind Brown and Lumpkin.

90% of the guys that come to Gerogia have a “Lofty Billing.” Many of them don’t live up to it. It’s easy to write an article like this after one player has an amazing season.

Yeah, poeple were, including you were “talking about him,” but not about playing him this year.

The kid is amazing to watch. I really didn’t realize it unitl the Alabama game. Our offense just seemed to gel/click so mech better with him in the game. The crazy thing about the kid is not any of his tangibles. He doesn’t have incredible size (I’d even go out on a limb and say he’s a tad bit undersized) and he isn’t really a track star like McFadden or Kentucky’s running back. Rather, it appears to be his intangibles that make this kid special. He can catch, he hits the holes, he breaks tackles in the open field, he lays the wood when blocking for Stafford on pass plays (surpisingly), and most of all the kid hustles and adds charisma/energy to the team as a whole.

As for the overuse issue. He could have gotten a little burnt out at the end of the season. But I’m going to have to agree with obnoxious ga fan that Tech told themselves they weren’t going to let Moreno beat them.

Talent like Moreno is very hard to mask. Yes he was third in the chart to start the year but is there really any doubt had Lump and T Brown not gotten injured that he wouldn’t have moved up to certainly #2 and most likely #1. Not in my mind. He is one of those special backs that only come along every so often in terms of years. I don’t wish him any undo pressure but this kid is the real deal and is currently flirting with greatness. I’m with georgiagirl, Heisman talk should certainly start with Moreno next year provided he stays healthy and starts next year in the manner that he finished this year. Thank you Tebow for opening up that Heisman sophmore door.

Moreno is a true game-changing player. In the Florida game when he started right and then stopped, changed direction and went left and jumped into the endzone, he showed me he was one of the best playing now. After that play the Florida defense was scared of him and they were reacting to his moves the rest of the game. They were scared to be too aggressive in trying to tackle him. Against a great defense like Auburn, his constant effort, always pushing forward turns 3 yards into 5, 5 into 7 and 20 into 30.

As far as your mythical nat’l championship is concerned, here’s some talk. LSU doesn’t deserve to be in the big game. Anyone who loses the No.1 ranking at home in the final weekend to their unranked archrival should thank their lucky stars they get a chance to play in the big game and just shut up.

Oh, and speaking of next year, it should be a wonderful one for the Dawgs, especially after a victory in Tiger Stadium….

It’s Miles playing Hester, we’re glad he is a Senior. We have a stable of backs who can handle anything needed for next year. Keiland Williams and Chalres Scott are the true tandem who will run all over teams next year. Pete Carrol wasn’t in their homes the nights before signing day for no reason. Just ask Vatech about Keiland Williams, he dropped 120 on them this year off the bench. It’s a shame Miles was so high on playing Seniors Flynn and Hester. With Perriloux and the backs next year we’ll be running and throwing with the best of them.
P. S. Check our running stats this year, I think we lead the SEC in total rushing yards with our white boy and his boys behind him.

Chip… this statement needs to replace “finish the drill” as our new motto for next year:

LEAVE NO DOUBT!!!

We need to beat the tar out of teams. We need to leave in our starters until the final whistle, like the Urban Myth did this year to pump up Teblow’s stats with every 3 yard TD run so he could win an overrated award.

We need to LEAVE NO DOUBT, so that hypocrites like Kirk Herbstreit (who last year had no issues with a Michigan team playing for the title when they didn’t even win their league title, yet this year led the media charge against the Dawgs) don’t have anyway to logically dis Dawgs, which seems to be the ESPN and SI pastime.

LEAVE NO DOUBT!!!

And no, I do not believe Lumpkin should touch the ball until the fourth quarter when we have a huge lead. He didn’t look good before he got hurt and he’s not as good as Moreno, and neither is Brown.

Moreno deserves 25 carries this game. Brown about 15.

It needs to be the Special K show in the Superdome.

Once again… LEAVE NO DOUBT!!!

NO Show,

Your post revealed how little you know about the sport of football. When Knowshon was on the field, running the ball, the defenders were right there to meet him in the hole and the backfield Thus, the Tech defense must have schemed our offense (ie keyed on what the blockers are doing and Knowshon) in order to stop him from running it down your throats like Brown ended up doing.

Re the Tech game, Richt made a good point afterward, which was that Tech’s defensive style favors a slasher like Brown rather than a runner like Moreno. Sometimes, it is not about “who shows up” but about how the defense works. That is why a 2 back system (with different type backs) is superior. It’s a team game, after all, no matter how much we focus on individuals.

By Dorsey Hill

Moreno is going to take us to another level. We will go from a top-10 program to a top-5 program simply because of his presence.

However, that doesn’t mean that we can just ride him and let him go 30 to 40 per game. He’s no Herschel Walker and the defenses he’ll see are a lot bigger and faster than they were 27 years ago. Plus, he’ll get hurt, we’ll be too predicable and he won’t be as effective.

I like what we are doing with him now. It looks like we try to get him 5 to 8 touches in the first half and then use him in the second half 10 to 15 times in the second half when the defense is tired. Further, as we saw with Tech, when a good DC decides to shut the guy down, he can, which is why we always need back ups who can play. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Caleb or Carlton Thomas or Dontavious Heard have some big games next year because the defenses will relax when Knowshon is out. We’ll hit some big plays with those young guys.

Just wait to you see what happens when A.J. shows up and forces other teams to provide safety help for the corners. I’m telling you, we are going to be a tough, tough team to beat the next 2 years. I think we are just going to score at will and we’ll still have a solid D to boot. I predict that we will be discussed in the same breath with those great Neb. teams of the mid-90’s and those USC teams earlier this decade. We will be that damn good.

To borrow a phrase: “You might not like it, but you better learn to love it.”

to the LSU blogger on her get off and shut up!! You were ranked #1 two different times this season and lost both times. You didn’t deserve to play for the MNC. You got put there because of potential and because sports writers hate to be wrong. you should thank your lucky starts that it was UT not UGA in the SECCG. I was at the game…if that team that showed up against UT had done the same against UGA you would have been blown off the field. UT couldn’t do anything on offense and still should have beaten LSU. I’ll say LSU has more talent than anyone this year but as a team was just above average. Your coach is an egomaniac (you better hope it’s not close against OSU…he’ll find away to lose it), and the fact that you are in the MNC game is a joke. That said, I hope you beat state by 14…geaux tigers!!!

I agree Tech shut down Moreno, but in the words of UGA’s former basketball coach Hugh Durham, “Statistics are for losers.” Herschel Walker never scored against Clempson but that really does not diminish the work of the best collegiate football player ever. I think the AJC should have a contest (or at least a blog) to name the King-Moreno tandem for next year — my initial thought is “Moreno and King will Do Their Thing”. By the way I LOVE the slogan “Leave No Doubt” posted above; I think it is brilliant. I think the various shake-ups in SEC coaching will open up offenses more in 2008. Coach Richt joked about the wishbone several years ago but never ran it. I’d like to see it for a few plays in 2008. I’d like to see a few reverses, some fake reverses, and some passes off of fake reverses. I hope Bobo uses the offseason to open up the playbook. I have said this a dozen times but A.J. cannot get to Athens fast enough. I believe he will cause the receiving corps to improve the same way Moreno made the other RB’s improve. I also recall what Verne Lundquist said about Georgia high school kids emulating Moreno.

For around five years, Auburn fans have been saying “why would RB’s want to go to UGA when they know UGA won’t have one RB run the ball much?” They can’t say that now - in fact they fired their OC because they acknowledged that they have trouble recruiting WR’s.

Final point: I hope Coach Richt plays Barnes in the Sugar Bowl and I hope Barnes gets to pass a ball or two. Also, Cox is in the same boat as Barnes but Cox is staying so he deserves even more credit.

Oh the memories that are yet to be made. I just hope Knowshon is up for it!!

UGA has had it now. With Van Gorder going to SC, UGA fans must be paralized. All I have read for the past 3 years is that Martinez is 3rd rate and the defense went to Hell, bla, bla, bla when VG left. I can’t wait to read what the KoolAid Factory has to say about this event. I’m sure what I will read tomorrow is that “well, he really ain’t that good”

LSU fans, just play us. Go ahead. You can run your mouths all you want, but the bottom line is that Georgia is better than you are right now, and you know it.

Tech fans, whatever. You’re irrelevant. Say what you will, Moreno had a great season. If it makes your pathetic lives better to say that you shut down Moreno one game (a game you lost by two TDs, I might add), go right ahead. No one else cares.

Yeah, No Show we hear ya’. All that tripe being spouted about the Jackets, NATS, “good ol’ fashioned hate”. Once, a long time ago, maybe. As far as I am concerned, that all ended the day Tech left the SEC. Remember why they quit the conference? Too rough for ‘em. Ya’ll played ‘Bama, and Chick Granning got his jaw broken. Next thing you know its time to p** on the fire and call the dawgs! Maybe ya’ll should’ve just p** on the fire. As for “no shows” where the flyin’ @&*%!@ has Tech been for the last 6 years? best UGA freshman tailback since Hershel Walker…best sec freshman tailback since McFadden.

He is a special player that made Richt look like a good coach this year, and he has the ability to carry the team. (Just like McFadden, Carnel Williams, Garrison Hearst, Bo Jackson, and Hershel Walker, etc.). The sec has a long history of great TBs, and I think UGA can ride Knowshon’s legs to a couple SEC titles and perhaps the MNC. Time will tell.

Good luck in the sugar bowl.

No Show, you are an idiot! Why don’t you go back to the Techie blog? Ohhhh, wait a minute, the only thing you guys have to talk about is how your offense will be going back to the 1950’s huh? The fact of the matter is that Knowshon Moreno was the best running back in the state of Georgia. I am sorry that you and your little boy B*** Choice can’t handle it. Moreno had 1273 yds on 239 carries and 12 TD’s. Choice had 1310 yds on 249 carries and 10 TD’s. How many more games did Choice start???? That is what I thought. Technically, if Moreno carried his average on the 10 carry difference between the 2, that would put him at 1326 yds. So why don’t you go back to measuring the electrostatic discharge released while you punch your clown, and stop talking about “No Shows”. That must be the nickname you gave your prom date pimple face.

Now back to the topic at hand… What is really going to be scary is when we have Caleb King in the back field with Moreno. We will also be adding AJ Green and Tavares King, who will be able to stretch the field. Then with the TE we have, Georgia’s offense could be really scary next year for opposing defensive coordinators. GO DAWGS!!!!

Man, I’m just sitting here cracking up laughing at the posts from the Nerd Herd. I mean, how jealous can a bunch of losers be? The jealousy stems in every one of their posts.

Keep knocking Stafford Nerds. Better yet try tackling him before he runs for 30 yards for a TD. Yep, throws for a couple hundred yards and runs one in. That is killing you guys.

Don’t even get me started on that wuss QB Bennett. I’d trade him for a sick horse and shoot the horse…
