UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

View from the press box

The first thing that hits you here is the cold, the second is the fact that not all the stands are full and the third is Georgia Tech. The Tech defense has set the tone early with Georgia not going much of anywhere on its first two drives. Georgia has also narrowly avoided a couple of big mistakes. Stafford threw into traffic and had the ball batted and nearly intercepted. Mikey Henderson nearly fumbled away a touchdown on a punt return. Brannan Southerland is dressed but not playing much ealry. He has a bum ankle. Rennie Curran was back in as a starter at linebacker and has helped hold Choice in check.

Georgia is having trouble moving the ball but a big run of 32 yards from Thomas Brown and a 17-yard catch by Mohamed Massaquoi on Burnett put Georgia in position for the field goal. Still Georgia is having trouble with the defense. Chester Adams and Fernando Velasco, Georgia’s only two senior linemen, have both been called for holds.

Georgia cannot figure out how to defend Choice in the wildcat formation. The running back took over for Bennett at quarterback and kick started the Yellow Jackets’ drive. After putting Georgia on its heels, Choice took a hand off and went 12 yards for a touchdown to put Tech up 7-3. Remember Tech has led in the last two Georgia games.

Georgia has lost defensive end Marcus Howard to injury. The defensive end suffered a right hip injury and is questionable for the rest of the game. Howard is backed up by Jarius Wynn, Jeremy Lomax and Brandon Miller.

Marcus Howard is back and Tech is still running Choice right at Georgia

Stafford just ran in his second touchdown in the last two weeks. This time Stafford went in from 31 yards out. Against Kentucky Stafford used the same play to go for a 10-yard touchdown. Stafford has run considerably less this year than last but it has been successful when he has pulled it down.

Georgia’s defense starts slow a lot of the times but the unit appears to be confused against Tech. Everyone is keying on Choice and that has allowed the receivers some room to find openings. Bennett has had a couple of chances at touchdowns, one has been dropped the other was a bad throw. He finally hit Colin Peek for a 17-yard touchdown. Peek was wide open. It was his first touchdown of the season.

Andy Bailey is warming up to kick a field goal. Georgia also Drew Bulter as an option.

Bailey missed so don’t be surprised if Ben Wilson or Bo Stansill becomes the kicker in the second half.

The score of the Tennessee game has not been announced here. But when it is it will be interesting to see the reaction of the Georgia team. The Bulldogs already appear to have their hands full with Georgia Tech. If something distracts Georgia it could be trouble for the Bulldogs.

Mike Bobo just had his first look at the UK Tennessee game. He didn’t have time to watch the end and went back to the coaches’ box.

Sean Bailey had just added to the long plays at Georgia this year. Bailey hauled in a 55-yard pass. That is the 52nd play for 25 or more yards Georgia has had this season. Southerland punched it in and Bailey made the point after. The kick barely made it through.

Thomas Brown’s 32-yard run was Georgia’s 53rd play of 25 yards or more this season. It was the third touchdown run of 30 or more yards for Brown. He had 50 and 41 yard TD runs against Ole Miss.

It may not be what Georgia fans want to hear, but the Tennessee win could be considered a good thing. The Bulldogs, provided they hang on, are a solid at-large BCS team and would be very attractive for the Orange, Rose or Fiesta bowls.

Number seven sure has been lucky for Georgia.

There were three huge plays that could have turned this game around for Georgia Tech. The first came in the first quarter when Mikey Henderson bobbled a punt only to scramble back and cover it in the end zone for a touchback.

The second huge play for Georgia was a lateral that missed the mark and Morgan Burnett grabbed. Burnett was on his way for a touchdown when Knowshon Moreno knocked the ball out of his hands. Moreno then covered the ball in the end zone for another touchback.

The final big play involved yet another touchback. Mikey Henderson was back once again to field a punt. But he couldn’t grab it before it bounced off the head of Ramarcus Brown. The ball bounded into the end zone and Brown covered it for a touchback.

Like I said, it’s not a shock the little bulldoggies aren’t going to any SEC championship. Heck, they choked that away when they lost to South Carolina. Most doggies realized it was over after that loss, but it was sweet seeing y’all get your hopes up again. Next year fer sure, right?

I have never heard such bias from announcers than the ones that are announcing this game! Tech truly have 2 more touchdowns and the true score shoud be 31 to 23 although GA should not have one of the touchdowns since clearly it was offensive pass interference during the 1st quarter so the refs gave GA that touchdown and PLEASE SHUT LARRY MUNSUN OFF NOW

Some perspective from far up North where it’s even colder than there in Atlanta …

I can tell you that the Tech-Georgia and Kentucky-Tennessee football games had the full attention of the folks here in Big Ten game. I’m here at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis., covering the Bulldogs’ basketball game against Wisconsin. But the media corps here barely made it out to the court for tipoff as we were watching the two games simultaneously. Clearly, judging from the oohs and ahs and oh-nos, the Wisconsin folks were rooting for Kentucky to beat UT… .

Anywayu, they’re just about to tipoff here. I just wanted to let y’all know I was paying attention.

Have fun taking it all in.

God bless America. For the third week in a row, I get to watch my Dawgs, even if it is 4AM over here. Our offense looked shaky in the first half, but TB just ran a long one for a TD. MM has done nothing; maybe because our OL is being eaten alive by the Tech DL. The special teams play is the worst I’ve seen in a long time. Speaking of the Kentucky-UT game, we would be heading to the SEC title game if 1) we would have taken care of business earlier in the season, and 2) Kentucky’s secondary went to sleep in the final overtime period while UT started from the 40 yard line. UT proceeded to score on one pass play. Kentucky stole defeat out of the jaws of victory. By the way, does anyone find it ironic that UT is headed to play in the SEC championship game and are ranked well behind the Dawgs? Even with both teams having two SEC loses, shouldn’t rankings play a roll in deciding the tie-breaker? GO DAWGS!!

NW Ga Dawg, don’t you know that the UT win was just part of a left-wing conspiracy headed by the Clintons because of the conservative base of UGA. Can’t blame Our Man Chan for this one. He completely opened up the playbook today and pulled all the stops. The difference is quality of players. Choice is ACC version of McFadden, real deal.

Congrats Vol fans, you earned it. Even if you win out, you might crack the top-12. Meanwhile, we’ll just sit it out at #4, hopefully we’ll get the BCS runnerup game. Not bad at all for a rebuilding year with a freshman RB and a sophmore QB!

WVU will play for the title, and deservedly so. I predict the Big-12 teams will cancel each other out. Here’s my Monday morning forecast:

1: Winner of Kansas-Missouri 2: West Virginia 3: Ohio State 4: Georgia 5: Virginia Tech

BASKETBALL UPDATE

Hey, FWIW, Georgia is hanging tough up here. Dogs lead 32-23 at halftime despite being whistled for 14 fouls to Wisconsin’s 5. Badgers are 95-5 and have won 26 games in a row under coach Bo Ryan in this building.

Wondering, how’d the football Dogs get the ball back late in the fourth and did Richt have ‘em take a knee in the red zone again?

Addendum: that means adding further comments, etc. for the uneducated. The University of Georgia Bulldogs will likely be Number 4 in the BCS come this time tommorow night. A challenge to all Dawg haters and other non-desirable sorts: come over here and see us next Saturday evening and thereafter until New Years. UGA=highest ranked team in the SEC (by far) and W I L L go to a BCS bowl game at worst.

Meanwhile, if LSU were to loose (doubt it) to UT, they will be out of the top 10. If UT loses, the CO-Champions of the SECE will be UNRANKED—although they will remain rank. Go look that one up.

As someone who is from Georgia, and grew up watching both teams (and, by the way, was accepted at both schools with a scholarship), I think that I have a very strong opinion about today. I have always had a healthy respect for Tech (yes, a great academic institution), and its football tradition dating back to John Heisman. Actually, this game ceased to be a rivalry after Tech left the SEC in 1966. For 30 plus years, this game, along with Alabama and Auburn, was a key game at the end of the year that determined the SEC pecking order. Therefore, some of the sizzle was lost. At the same time, Bobby Dodd retired, and Vince Dooley was rapidly ascending as one of the best coaches in his generation (much as Dodd was). A third factor in the watering down of the rivalry is the simple fact that Tech’s mission as an engineering institution has changed. Academic standards have changed (as have Georgia’s). The student composition has changed quite a bit in the last 40 years, and many recent graduates and current students do not share the same passion for this game (or for ACC or SEC football at all) as their predecessors did. On the other side of the coin, Georgia is still the state’s flagship university…although, to my dismay, most students now come from the Atlanta area, and their families are not from here and don’t have any idea what conditions are like economicaly or politicaly outside of the metro area (hint, these things go hand in hand. I could go on and on, but I won’t. I do hope for a good game today, and I think it will be - “rather beat them than eat” as my dad says. With that said, UGA 21, Tech 17. Tech…please, please, please, BEAT UNC TWICE THIS YEAR!

Hey Chip, I’ll have to defend KevDawg a bit. Have you not read some (a lot) of the bug crap here in the past week or so?? Com’on. ‘Tech deserves EVERYTHING coming their way. Another thought comes to mind: SECE and SECC are nice, but winning the Georgia Championship is essential! Something the Dawgs just did—again. Thank goodness them ‘Dawgs didn’t need almost 6 hours and 3 OTs to beat UK.

UGA: the SEC’s best team and 2007 Co-Champions of the SECE.

I’m sorry GT bugs; you will not beat us for several more seasons. We own your sorry team. I know the typical excuses. UGA had two Rhode scholars to GT’s none. Find a new excuse such as a sucky team and coach. UT should not be too happy. LSU will beat UT by 20 points. I have a great idea. UT vs GT in the Southern Joke Bowl in WhoGivesaCrap, Texas. Why are UT fans using UGA sites? Oh that’s right, their newspapers suck. UK revealed the truth about UT. They are an average team that will be dominated next week. What is the ranking of UT? UGA? The only thing larger than a UT’s fans mouth is Phillip Fulmer’s waist. My god is the dude 400 pounds. The truth is that UGA would gain nothing by playing in the game against LSU. We are going to be ranked higher.

Isn’t it funny the ONLY thing dog fans can say at this point is something like=Wait til LSU whoops you….well, two things here…35-14 and have fun watching the SEC title game next week!!! Also, to all the red neck UGA fans who were at Taco Mac Perimeter, suck on that!!! I’ll give you all the credit in the world for pulling for KY as that would have sent you to the dome…but to show you classless a* by cheering whenever a UT player went down with an injury just shows how inbred redneck classless asses you really are…

Congradulations Gen Neyland, your guys played and won the right to defend the East in the SEC Championship. To the Vol and Dawg fans on this blog, three words, show some class. Be classy in winning and be classy in admitting that if we wanted to go to the SECC, then we should have won on the checkerboard. UT has the tie-breaker, they go to the SECC. And I am pulling for the East since the team that beat us is going to play the former overrated number one team in the country. Okay maybe not that overrated, it is the SEC and we whip each other weekly.

Right now Buck Cochran is telling Lewis Grizzard, “See, I told you that Stafford kid was the real deal.” God bless you Buck, rest easy my friend and I will see you in the bye and bye.

Joe, I’m a Dawg fan and I have no idea what you are talking about. I have never cheered for an injury. That is stupid. I’m cheering because we beat the sucky GT bugs again. I expected UT to defeat UK. GET A CLUE. Why are UT fans reading UGA blogs? We played several weeks ago. Why are you focusing on UGA? I’m not searching for blogs from Knoxville. Reading the heading again for this blog. No, UGA players can’t work for GT grads. How many NFL coaches have GT degrees?

GEN Neyland,

Thanks for showing the class that should be exhibited on this blog. Being a lifelong UGA fan, I was sorely disappointed that UK lost today and as a result UT goes to the SECCG. I would like to wish you and the VOLS the best of luck next week, even though I am rooting for LSU and already have tickets for the Sugar Bowl (banking on LSU playing in the NT and UGA going to the Sugar Bowl). Great game by the DAWGS, even though there were way too many penalties again. Unfortunately I only got to watch the 4th quarter, as the stations here decided to show KSU and Fresno (no idea what they were thinking). KM looked very frustrated, but is the back of the present and future here at UGA. Go MU, they will lose to OK next week again and UGA will move up even more in the BCS.

General Neyland… I suggest you get a broom and get your toothless, inbred, hillbilly kin off of our damn porch!!!

And us in the Bulldog Nation have to believe that Buck in Heaven gave Matt a little bit of vision to pull that ball out of Moreno’s belly to take the rock to the house for the 10-7 lead.

I think Buck in Heaven would want people to realize that Stafford could have the kind of numbers Teblow has if he played in the same offensive system and didn’t have a running back who could be trusted to dive one yard into the endzone in goaline situations. Oh, and if Stafford had the kind of coach who is shamelesly doing everything he can to win his QB an award when he realized his season was basically over after the Dawgs beat Teblow up in Jax.

Dawg fans, lets just enjoy the win over Tech! Leave the trash talk to people on other boards. As for the Vols, congrats on winning the East. Wish we had showed y’all a better game, but we didn’t and now we’ll watch y’all in the game next week. Sure would appreciate some class from both sides on this board. Funny that it is a UGA board though, huh? If you need to come over here to talk trash, that just proves you are one of “those fans.” Every school has ‘em, and they ruin the reps of each school’s fans unfortunately. Go Dawgs, and, again, congrats Vols and LSU on the game next week.

Why did David Cutcliff return to UT? Doesn’t the dude have heart problems? Solution: Return to a staff with John Chavis and Phillip Fulmer. The summo twins. Don’t hate because we are the superior program. Get used to the Jersey kid. He will look good with the big trophy next season. What about Kade Weston? Why are UT fans searching UGA sites?

What are you planning for next Saturday? Going to Wild Bill’s and getting drunk as usual, I suppose. Probably sit areound and say ‘We shoulda been in the Championship game.’ Well, tough shi%. You lost to S. Carolina and Tennessee and you are not going!

I read this stuff every year and every year stupid tech fans are talking trash they KNOW they can’t back up on the field. Even when we beat you, you still act like we are nothing. Are you serious? Do you ever compete for your own conference? NO! We, on the other hand, do and are able to win our conference. Now listen very closely… WE OWN YOU!! We have always owned you!! We are a REAL football program that considers you our 3rd biggest rival AT BEST. So shut up and take what we give you year after year. By the way, where did you guys get that quarterback? The Salvation Army? That guy made Reggie Ball look like Tom Brady. Hope you enjoy the next 365 days. And after those are up, don’t worry; we will give you another 365 days to suffer after that. Please forgive Erics posts as he really doesnt have a clue. He is in complete DENIAL that the mutts didnt even win the SEC East, much less the Conference. I keep trying to tell him you have to earn things in life, not have things handed to you because you could close the deal. They needed UT to lose to get a shot at the Conference title and LSU to lose to get any shot into the top 6 of the BCS, and if the stats are correct, both teams are 9-2, but LSU is going to the Conference championship and UGA is second in the East. If Im the BCS I wont take a team that couldnt get their on their own over one wins their division and Conferece.

FROM AJC

“Georgia has never been in the Fiesta Bowl. The last time it was in the Rose Bowl was Jan. 1, 1943, when it beat UCLA 9-0. The last time Georgia played in the Orange Bowl was in 1960, when the Bulldogs beat Missouri 14-0.”

Acting like you have been there before must be hard when you cant remember the last time you did.

Oh, and it is pretty funny to hear people from georgia call people from tennessee hillbillies….if that is not the pot calling the kettle black I am not sure what is.

I hope UGA gets USC in the Rose so they can get RUN!

For UGA to make it to the national championship the following things would have to happen next week:

1) Oklahoma would have to beat the winner of Missouri-Kansas (it’s probably best that Kansas gets beat tonight)

2) West Virginia would have to lose next week

3) UT would have to beat LSU in the championship game.

Very realistic possibilities considering what has happened all this season.

As of now it looks as if UGA will go to the Orange Bowl against the VT- Boston College winner. I’m guessing that VT will win and face Georgia in Miami. Considering how this season started, I think that’s a great finish.

DAWGS BCS Bowl Scenarios: 1.Rose - DAWGS vs. Southern Cal 2.Fiesta - DAWGS vs. OK or Hawaii 3.Orange - DAWGS vs. VT/BC winner

By chase

Yeah the VOLS won and they beat UGA BUT have you seen a less deserving team? look at the Vandy/Kent games and the FLA, ALA, and CAL games

THE FIRST TIE-BREAKER SHOULD BE OVERALL RECORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the SEC records of UGA and TENN were the kept the same (w/ tenn winning head to head) DO YOU REALIZE they could have lost all 4 NON-CONFRENCE GAMES and been 6-6 and STILL GONE TO THE SECCG!!! Because of head to head tie-breaker

That IS RIDICULOUS….a 9-3 20th ranked team is going to play in the title game instead of a #4 Ranked 10-2 team…

What the current system does is favor weaker teams that may have ONE GOOD DAY rather than the team with the BEST SEASON!

I don’t think UGA will need TENN to beat LSU to get to the NC! They and OKLA will be too far behind UGA (3-4 spots)to jump us..

CBS SPORTSLINE has an article in which a Jeff Anderson of Anderson/Harris comp. poll says that “a two loss Georgia team has a chance to jump a one-loss team in the computer polls….I really don’t think they are out of it”

Go check it out online if you don’t believe me!

In fact, LSU, who also didn’t play for the SEC Championship last year yet played in a BCS Bowl didn’t think they’re bowl was useless.

Methinks you are an idiot who is suffering a fit of jealousy knowing that the Dawgs will be playing in a far superior bowl to your Hillbillies and that y’all will be coming right back to Atlanta for the Peach or out to Nashville for the Music Bowl.

It’s okay, MattVol… embrace your petty jealousy. It’s really all you have left.

I mean…The NFL goes by overall record when deciding who goes to the playoffs and THEN if that is equal they go to Confrence record and if that is egual they will then go to head to head!

Best record + Best Ranking = Best Team! + Georgia NOT the vowels

HOW BOUT THEM DAWGS!!!! Another year, another victory. How sweet it is.

There is one thing that has GOT to stop. Yes, I can understand Tech fans are angry, frustrated and depressed… another loss to Georgia. But that it no way gives you any right to throw stuff on the field. What if you hit someone in the head? It’s immatue, it’s stupid, it shows just how much of a poor sport some Tech fans are… and there’s just no excuse for throw bottles and stuff on the field. GROW UP, TECH FANS. Get used to it, you’ll be losing to Georgia for years to come. Throwing things is for five year olds… not college football fans. It’s babyish and shows that some people at Tech really aren’t too bright.

And then Tech has to put that crap on the screen how an average Tech grad makes $55K? That is so freakin upitty and snotty… yeah that might be true, but has NOTHING to do with football… I hope that it makes Tech fans feel better about themselves… that crap has no place in a college football game.

Who cares about the Vols or LSU — Winner plays in Sugar against Hawaii — Nobodu will watch that — With all the crime in NEw Orleans — Not sure your going to have a turn out — First year the SEC Championship doesn’t mean anything — we go to a bigger bowl! What is really funny — All th Vols and other scholls have to go to Atlanta to get jobs — Great state of Tn, La, Al and SC can’t support those Grads’ — Just like the great state of Georgia supplies all the SEC schools with talent, I guess we have to help the economy as wel — Certainly not enough high paying jobs in those states — LOL

Volfan660 just made an excellent point.

All this year did was give Fat Phil another few years to run the Good Ship Hillbilly further into the Sea of Mediocrity.

So wow. You guys have to keep Fat Phil a few years more, knowing that true SEC dominance, the kind that the Dawgs have enjoyed the last 7 years, with 5 ten win seasons, 2 Championships, 4 SEC East titles, and what will be yet another top-10 finish, probably our second top-5 (to go along with two No. 6’s and a No. 9) finish… will be something that y’all won’t ever experience again.

Seriously… Tennessee hasn’t won the SEC since 1998. They haven’t finished in the top-10 since 1998.

Seems to me that since 1998, Tennessee has been a bit average. Lots of 8 win seasons. Ten years, no top-10 finishes or SEC titles.

Yep… have fun with all that Hillbillies.

Hey VolFan4Life (a.k.a Eric’s Momma). You’re as useless as Juspost. So you bring up the fact that Tennessee has a tougher schedule yet I slapped you with the facts that Georgia has a tougher schedule than your coon dogs. Then all you can come back with is the score when Georgia played Tennessee. If it truly makes you feel better to go back in time to convince yourself that Tennessee is good when they are really overrated, so be it. If you’ve looked at the Tennessee games since Georgia, Tennessee has slowly digressed to a mediocre team…especially the last two games. It will all culminate with some @$$ whipping by LSU on the coon dogs next week. NUFF SAID!!!

UGA and TENN are CO-SEC EAST CHAMPS….both schools get a Trophy and it goes in the record books for BOTH teams as a EAST division Title…

TENN simply gets to play in the SECG b/c of a tie breaker! BUT both are East Champs!!!!!!!!!

Oh and IF Ohio St. gets into the NC…GEORGIA will play in the Rose Bowl…Mark it down…b/c the Rose would get to pick the first replacement!

Also…if VaTech goes to the Orange Georgia WILL absolutley NOT be playing them because according to the BCS.org one part of the selection process involves not having two teams play a bowl game against each other in consecutive years!!!

Jim, I’m not sure how this works, but I believe the score of a game tells you who won and who lost. The team that gets the most points is the winner. Since Tennessee scored 35 and Georgia scored 14, that means that Tennessee won and Georgia lost. I know that’s kind of hard to get your arms around when you’re busy trying to equivocate how a 10 point win over Troy is much better than a 21 point win over Arkansas, but if you try really hard, I bet you’ll be able to get it.

Nice game, you won. Just a few comments though.

One – Please inform you cheer squad that when the American flag is presented to lead out your team, it is not appropriate for another flag to be flown higher (even if it is your G flag).

Two – I found it hilarious that the girl in front of us at the game referred to Tech fans as nerds but was continually texting her friends on her phone (as many of the other Ga fans around us were doing especially at the start of the second half).

Three – It was my first time to attend the GT – UGA game and for the most part, the UGA fans showed class, rooted hard for their team but showed they had class. However, after reading many of the posts above, several of you fit the profile of the one that was in section 211, row 7 and around seat 28 (red short sleeved shirt over a white long sleeved shirt). He had absolutely no class on the street before the game or in the stadium and is why the word obnoxious is uttered so often when talking about UGA fans. Some of your posts would lead me to believe you could have been the UGA fan that set next to me that I found out through an intelligent, civilized conversation lived close enough to me that we could be called neighbors. He had class and it showed

Again, nice game, we thought (as many of the UGA fans around us did also) that Tech would pull it out tonight but didn’t (those hopes ended for us in the third quarter). The only positive thing that can happen now for the Tech program this year is for Chan to say good-bye. Hopefully your win will help seal his fate.

Good luck in Miami or wherever you end up.

I don’t care where we go but I’d love to see us matched up again with West Virginia…only this time the officials will be required to call offensive holding on their damn O-Line. Defy anyone to review that game - I had made the mistake of TIVOin’ the thing, but I at least had the chance to go back over some key plays…in every case there was at least two OL’s holding - with the spreads and their speed they only had to hold for a second or two, but holding it was.

By the way, people keep going on about how those guys blew us out…sure they scored on some long plays, but when I ask them what they thought the final margin of victory was - nobody guesses the three points that it was and that we were only on incomplete pass from the second all-time comeback in a major bowl - we already had the first one.

That said, it appears a graduate sat next to you and could discuss the finer points of football, 3-4, 4-3, defensive scheme. Sorry, we all get poor fans. My crazy Marine brother and I usually prowl the area to make sure our guys are behaving. We let visiting fans have fun as they should. Nothing against you, but before you go calling out Gen Neyland to corral “his” people, you might wanna know that 90% of these “hillbilly vols” are actually Tech fans. Before the Cocktail Party this year they were all Gator fans. I guess they’re ashamed to pose as Gamecock fans, since SC has lost six in a row. Man, that emotional pot is boiling over!

Speaking of SC, did Spurrier call for a RED-OUT? Guess he’s reverting to his pre-losing streak quips: “We want to be where Georgia is.” Well, I ‘m sure you do! At least the Carolina red looked better than those gawd awful Clemson getups. Purple pants?!! Tommy Bowden should be run off for that alone!

Ellen, I’ll give you 1 bad call - the one where Tech’s # 1 was called for interference. The rest of them looked right to me, and to the TV broadcast crew. Both teams got away with some holds. If you didn’t realize it, that happens in every game. By the way, it is the referee crew you should be mad at, not the announcers. Guess that shows how much you know about football, hehe.

By heeldawg

November 25, 2007 6:40 AM | Link to this

First of all, congratulations to UT in earning the SEC East slot in the SECCG. As a Dawg fan I’d like to have been there, but you beat us decisively in Knoxville and earned the right to represent our division. No excuses there.

Second, for folks like Matt Foley, keep your posts elsewhere if you have to resort to racial slurs and bigoted comments about other peoples’ religions. I’m proud of all of the Georgia players. I don’t care where they come from, what color they are or what religion they profess to follow. They’re all Dawgs to me, and we’re happy to have them.

Third, as a matter of grammatical correction, the operative term is “whining,” not “whinning.” Please make a note of this. There is such a thing as spell check.

Fourth, it would be impossible for the Vols to “jump” the Dawgs in the BCS even if they win the SECCG. If LSU wins the SECCG, they’ll be 11-2 and in the Sugar Bowl. A 9-4 UT team would then be in the Capitol One, in all likelihood. Georgia, at 10-2 and with a #4 or #5 BCS ranking guaranteed, would get an at-large BCS bid. If UT wins the SECCG, they’d be SEC Champions at 10-3 and would go to the Sugar Bowl. LSU, also at 10-3, would likely go to the Capitol One Bowl, and would certainly be lower-ranked in the BCS than Georgia, who would still be #4 or 5 in the BCS and would still get an at-large BCS bid. So the Vols can knock LSU out of the BCS, but not Georgia.

Finally, for the Tech fans who complain about the refs, there was one blown call in the game—the pass interference call on Morgan Burnett against Mohammed Massaquoi in the end zone. The touchback calls were bizarre plays, but the correct calls were made by the officials. One one play, the ball went out of the back of the end zone; on another, the Dawgs recovered the ball after it was punched out of Burnett’s hands by Moreno. It wouldn’t have made any difference anyway. The Dawgs won by two TDs and took a knee within sight of the Tech goal line as time expired. If all three plays had taken a Tech bounce, the Dawgs would have still won the game on that final drive. (And if you want to second-guess officiating, you’d have to start with the “non-fumble” by the Tech QB on the game-winning drive a few years back, or with the infamous Jasper Sanks incident, when a downed ball was called a fumble after the fact and then was carried out of the back of the end zone by the Tech player who allegedly recovered the ball, which would have been a safety. That call was blown so badly that the officiating crew was suspended). Controversial officiating happens. It decided the two games I mentioned above (both Tech victories). It did NOT decide this game. The better team won this weekend at Grant Field. And you’d better get used to it. Tech won’t beat Georgia next year (14 senior starters on this Tech team; four senior starters for Georgia) or the year after. The streak will reach a record nine games before the Jackets even have a shot. Pretty soon, there won’t be anyone on Tech’s team who can even remember the last time the Jackets beat Georgia.

Congrats to the Vols You won it even tho I hoped your team would lose. Good luck to you and live long with Fulmer. The first half of the year TN and GA seemed to be a scourge of the SEC and now they are the cream. You beat us fair and square. Now beat the chitzu out of LSU!

Spurrier just lost his 5th straight. Am I suprised? NO. It’s not like the lamecocks are any kind of power team or anything. Afterall they lost to Vandy and just about every other SEC team.

How about Dem DAWGS!!! For a Co-East champion you play like a National Champion. Tech looked good in the first half but unfortunately for them there are 4 quarters in a football game. It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog But just think it’s only going to get better next year!!

I did predict Auburn 8-4, Bama 5-7, UGA 10-2…Dawgs you got a solid foundation to built a great team next year, but other SEC teams(Florida, Auburn, LSU) will be strong, but advantage UGA with #24 and #7, plus AJ Green moving in.

I don’t remember us offering to share the east title in the 3-way of 2003. (I’m not real sure what the actual SEC word is on that) Lots to be said for finishing tied for first, but as far as I’m concerned the East Crown goes to the Vols.

This is 2 years in a row , that Vandy and Ky have p** me off.

GATORMANIA, Auburn 20- Florida 17, Tedow healthy, also against LSU he seems right on target. Florida has soared since UGA defeat(average 50 points a game), and Tebow should win the Heisman, but UGA has improved since Florida game also with a more balance offense, plus defense grew up. UGA is best team in SEC today, Tebow was limited in the Cocktail Classic, but the records would be the same as today.

Your mania is showing.

The Gators lost, and it wasn’t all that close. Get over it.

Tebow was hurt. Big whoop. You beat us 14-10 in 2005 when DJ Shockley was out with an injury and Joe Tereshinski had to play unexpectedly. If we’d have won that one, we’d have beaten you three out of the last four times out. But we didn’t, and the rest is history. Injuries are part of the game. Deal with it.

Oh, and by the way, with your defense, I wouldn’t bet on anything next year. At least not with anything you’d like to keep. ‘Cause you know what? Everything you saw this year comes back next year and then some. You’re 9-3. We’re 10-2. You lost. We won. Grow up.

Well I must say good game to the Dawgs. However, tell me Dawgs does it really feel that good of a win to know that you had to win the game with it being 16 against 11 the entire time on the field? Please do not get me wrong those boys played a heck of a game but with the calls that were made on three differnt plays were unreal. I myself am a ref and that call on the first punt sorry guys that is a Safety the momentum of the ball was caused by the body. You do not make that call when the ball is touched at the 4 sorry it does not go that way.

Then you have that amazing pass interference call wow does that bring back memories bad. Once again we have another punt at which time GT covers the ball in the end zone and they give the ball to UGA anyhow what is that. These along with Mikey Henderson getting mauled at the Defensive end with no calls is amazing to me. Yes that is why he got the big penalty with all the no calls that were taking place. Do not get me wrong those boys played a great game but when you have that much help from the striped shirts who do you think is going to win?

Yes it has been 7 years and that is all good as a fan I do take my hat off to each and every kid that was on the field playing but we as fans saw the game and myself doing what I do as well as coaching hate it that games are taken away from one team due to the calls. Take it as you will but what is right is right and wrong is wrong just too bad the DAWG fans are not reaslistic and can admit when a game was given to them.

As much as I hate to say this Good Game from all the boys that were on that field.

GT4ever,

You are one of those guys that makes excuse. Here are the facts: Georgia has better players, better coaches, better fans, etc. Georgia spent the better part of 2 quarters trying to give the game away and the nerds could not muster enough fight to take advantage of the situation. In fact, most of Georgia’s sideline was more concerned with what was going on in Lexington than they were about the 11 bugs on the field…and the Dawgs still won by 2 touchdowns. Enjoy the Emerald Bowl, or tech’s second home field, the blue turf in Boise.

We lost two conference games and that knocked us out of the SECCG, but I’d rather be where we are than having lost two games to… say… Florida and Auburn. CMR gets a nice bonus and UGA gets a trophy, but as far as I’m concerned, Tenn is the SEC East Champs. Congrats Tenn.

I am not in favor of deciding the SEC any other way than the way it is now. Having it determined by the whole schedule versus the conference schedule would lead us back to scheduling more patsies, just when there is a movement to get away from that. Conference champs need to be determined by how you played in your conference.

I would love to be playing in the dome next week, but I also love where we are… wouldn’t trade places with Tennessee for nothing in the world. The Vols deserve props for finishing the year like they did… strong. We all have some close calls, we just need to make sure they end up in the “W” column. UGA does not need to “go there” in pointing out close games that Tenn won, or vice versa… that’s a no-win debate for either side.

Again, I like where we are at, and obviously Tenn is happy with where they are at… let them gloat in it, I’d rather be in the thick of the BCS any day than the consolation of the SECCG with no chance of cracking the top 10. Hell, I hope the Vols win and Phat Phil gets to hang around for several more years.

Go Dawgs!!!

sounds like some SOUR GRAPES!!!!!!!

How about the BS Jasper Sanks Non-fumble, the Joe Hamilton fumble that wasn’t called! They both DIRECTLY cost Georgia very close games!

This game was not as close as the score!

Georgia out gained you by close to 250 yards! and beat you by 14!

The “refs” didn’t have anything to do with that!

Stop crying! 7 in a row is no fluke! But hey I guess the refs won those games for UGA too? Give me a break!

Hey GT4ever,

I too was a ref at one time and played football from 5 to 18 years old and coached my sons football teams. You of all people should know that when making a split decision call on the field, as a ref, it is difficult at times and you don’t always make the right calls. If I recall, Georgia played Tech, not the ref’s and yes sometimes a bad call can change a game. Have you ever made a bad call and did someone come on this blog and call you a block head. As much as you would like to say this game was handed to Georgia you are crazy if you think that. If that is the case, then you techies laid down and let it happen. Either way Georgia BEAT Tech, so get over it and quit being an arm chair ref pretending like he has never made a bad call himeself.

OK dreamers. I just read the real truth about the bowls and here’s the scoop. If Tennessee beats LSU then they go to the Sugar Bowl. If not they go to the Outback Bowl.

Georgia will go to the Cottonmouth bowl and play Kansas. Two teams with two losses seem like a good matchup to me.

By Lee

Great win for the Dawgs, even though when I looked in the mirror this morning, I saw a few more gray hairs…

A few observations:

  • They key to stopping Ga’s offense is to put pressure on Stafford. Tech did a good job at that… for a while. One drawback to a blitzing/stunting defense is that it takes a lot of energy. Not a problem if you have a lot a depth, big problem if you dont.

  • The difference in having one quality rb (Choice) as opposed to two quality rb’s (Brown/Moreno) was very evident in the fourth quarter.

  • Ga put the ball on the ground three times and recovered in their own end zone. Tech gets a couple of those,,, you do the math.

  • Okay, it is the twelfth game of the season. If you haven’t figured it out by now, you take your helmet off in celebration you’re gonna get a 15 yard penalty. Has this begun to sink into your thick skull, Rashad Jones? Stupid. Bear Bryant would have benched your butt for the remainder of the game.

  • I’m a Ga fan, but even I will admit that Ga got a break on the pass interference call in the end zone.

Hey Rocky Top,

Just how do you figure Georgia goes to the “Cotton” Bowl? Also, is math a challenge for you? Kansas has 1 loss last time I checked and I do not believe they play again till the bowl. Outback it will be. Lose again to Penn State or some other Big Ten team and then watch UGA in either the Rose or Orange.

BTW, to the other Vol fans, especially Gen Neyland, congrats. You deserve to go because you whupped us fair and square. I would rather be in Atlanta, but Pasadina or Miami ain’t a bad consolation prize.

GT4ever: Shut up. All week long the Tech fans have been taking shots at UGA for everything from being a bad school to having unethical coaches. We won the game by a wide margin that could have been much wider had our “unethical” coaches not had mercy upon your team. There was one bad call against Tech: the interference. We might have scored anyway. There was a no-call on an obvious holding on the second Tech touchdown. Maybe you would have scored anyway. Point is, we won by a comfortable margin and are off to a BCS bowl and top 3 ranking to start next year. Have fun in Idaho and we will talk to you next November when UGA again thinks about the yellow-headed step-child in the family. Have a nice Christmas, and Go Dawgs!

By Kent

Yes! Tennessee wants to keep their coach. Most teams want to fire coaches when they can no longer beat the team they hate the most. Tennessee has no problem beating Georgia. Even when the red colored glasses wearing georgia fans think they rule the world it is Tennessee who dictates where they will play. Georgia typically waits for anothe rteam to help them as Tennessee takes care of the job at hand. Say all you want about UT but they are playing for a ring while Georgia plays for a watch ! Championships are what seasons are about , not bowl placements. 3 years from now if you ask anyone who won the 2008 Orange bowl only a uga fan can answer ask who won the SEC any SEC fan will know the answer. GO VOLS and continue the dominance over uga !

Business as usual Georgia looking for another team to lose in order to help their ranking. Georgia I hope you do land a game against USC or WV so you can have your over rated butts handed to you. Tennessee has an additional loss because they play quality teams outside the SEC. Georgia who do you play year after year outside of the SEC? NOBODY ! You play simple games to pad your even soft SEC schedule. Rare that you play Alabama, you play UF away from the swamp, and dont even say they dont have to play in that ugly Sanford because that house is as ugly as the basketball barn !Who else in the SEC gets to play UF outside of the swamp ? Tennessee has done nothing but improve with a younger team week after week than uga . Tennesseee starts 3 more freshman than you do ! Get over yourself ! Tennessee kicks your butt’s again next year.

La Jolla Dawg,

Actually, the results you are worried about won’t really matter much as far as where the Dawgs go. All of those are conference games and the winners, regardless of who they are will go to the Orange, Sugar and either the BCS Championship Game (Mizzou) or the Fiesta Bowl (OU). We will still be the highest ranked at-large team even if one or more of those jump us in the BCS. And then you have to win the bowl game to move back up.

Kent, good luck in the SEC CG. Of course you are right, people remember who won the SEC. It would a great prize for you guys since you haven’t done it in so long. Then again, nobody remembers who lost the SEC CG either. Have fun and good luck.

The Orange Bowl NORMALLY gets the first shot at At Large teams this year. However, if Ohio State makes it into the BCS Championship game and the Rose would get first choice since they lost their Big Ten hook up. The question is would the Rose follow their desires and pick a 13th or 14th ranked 3 loss Illinois or would they pick a 4th or so ranked Georgia? They make no secret of their desire to keep the Big Ten-PAC Ten family hook up, but in this case the disparity in rankings might force them to select UGA. Remember last year, before Florida got into the BCS game, LSU had pre-sold 45000 tickets to the game. Worst case, UGA goes to Miami to play the ACC Champs.

Tennessee is very happy. Unlike uga fans that always want to give excuses as to why Tennessee is where they are is becuse they did what they had to do in order to get there. uga always want tto make an excuse as to why ! Then again, we do regularly play Auburn, the team otherwise known as Bama’s Daddy. No we don’t play the Gators in the Swamp but we never play them in our “ugly” stadium either. LOL.

I do not know what all this fussing about won-lost records is all about anyway. Someone I once knew and loved said “It’s just a game, dog.” I think we should all think about that. If you get upset about a tech loss, then concentrate on your SAT score. If the team has a bad day, think about the amount of money you THINK you will make when you graduate. Tennessee fans kill me.

Typical of the creamsicles. Instead of being happy that you team has won the right to go to Atlanta, you get on here and worry about a team you BEAT. Talk about ENVY. You guys have completely overachieved just like we have this year.

Good for you guys, you beat two teams this last week who had no business being in the game at the end.

I would have loved to have put truth serum on most of you guys at the beginning of this season to see if you were happy with your team and your coach.

I would be more concerned about that defense of yours instead of on here ragging UGA.

I would also be more concerned about that coaching staff which quit on your players during the second half.

You won the game in October. Get over it. The fact that we are ranked 4th in the Cluster F that is the BCS is what you ought to be mad at.

We’re ranked higher than you. That’s life. People and computers this year feel that we don’t need to get an SEC championship to be better than you. Unfortunate maybe, but that’s life.

I’m really kinda p** that you won, because I really wanted the opportunity for UGA to do what you guys won’t do, which is beat LSU. It’s all good though. Strap your coon skin caps on tight with your hunting gear and make sure you represent the SEC EAST WELL BABY!!

I’d ask you guys to bring some water down, but I know by passing through Knoxville a few times that you have no idea what I’m talking about.

Be concerned about winning next weekend, or if you’re not careful, you could be OUTBACKING…

And know that still, on one of the greatest days in Tennessee history-

UGA was still better than you…

Rocky Top

Congratulations on winning yesterday and representing the SEC East in the Championship game. I had a feeling that the Vols would win and I also have the feeling that you will acquit yourselves quite well in the SEC Championship game and LSU had better come ready to play.

First I don’t know what you read but it was wrong because there are only 4 BCS Bowls with an extra game- The BCS National Championship game that is also hosted on a rotating basis between these four. Second the four BCS Bowls are the Rose, Sugar, Orange and Fiesta with the Sugar Bowl hosting the extra BCS NC game one week later this year. The Cotton Bowl is not a BCS Bowl last I checked. Third Georgia is guaranteed a BCS Bowl under the BCS rules because they are # 4 in the BCS ranking. Only way that changes is if someone jumps them after the ACC, Big 12 and/or SEC Championship games next Saturday and that isn’t likely to happen.

As it stands right now it looks like we are headed to the Rose or Fiesta. Could also be the Orange if Boston College wins the ACC instead of VT.

Kudos to the O’line too. Stacy Searls should be up for assistant coach of the year with what he has done with those guys. And, a thanks to Knowshon and the O’lineman who never gave up on that bad latteral. The O’lineman slowed up the Tech guy and Knowshon got him before he could score. Thanks to everyone for making this a memorable year for the Dawgs.

The Rose gets first at large choice if the Buckeyes go to the BCS game and the Orange gets it if Mizzou makes it to the BCS game. Regardless of what happens this weekend, Georgia will remain by far the highest ranked at large team. It is not likely to happen, but even if USC, Va. Tech, LSU and Oklahoma were to win and pass us, we would remain the top ranked at large team, so there is no way UGA does not go to a BCS Bowl. Looks like it will be Pasadena or Miami.

This whole blog is ridiculous. Teams have good days and bad days. Refs have good days and bad days. You win some and lose some. TN is no better or worse than GA. FL is no better or worse than TN or GA. Teams in the SEC East are so close now that any can win on a given day. I know some of you feel the need to use the blogs as a vent, but you’d be better served to find a healtier way to deal with all that pent up anger and frustration.

Did anyone else at the Georgia vs. Georgia Tech game last night notice those horrid interludes between plays, led by “Hometeam” Brandon Leak?

The gimmicks reminded me of the promotional anticks of an Atlanta Knights home game, or perhaps a minor league baseball game in some podunk town.

What’s next? Karaoke contests? Dodgeball? Fans wrestling wearing pneumatic sumo wrestler suits? Frisbee dogs? Maybe some dancers can walk over from the Cheetah and serve as cheerleaders?

Mind you, I am a Georgia fan, but I do respect Georgia Tech, if for no other reason than the fact that I live in Atlanta. But this is disrespectful to Georgia Tech AND Atlanta.

Is what they must resort to in order to fill the stands? It’s shameful, to say the least. I also have to believe that Georgia Tech alums are beside themselves.

If Georgia Tech decides to fire Chan Gailey, they also need to nuke Jennifer Pierce, the wunderkid who cooked this nonsense up. There is no doubt in my mind she hasn’t a clue about NCAA football. Alienating your core fan base violates the basic principals of Marketing 101.

I hope the Georgia Tech program recovers, to at least make this annual game against Georgia an interesting match, and to give them a fighting chance. But I certainly will not visit their junior high school stadium again if we are to be entertained by pizza giveaways every time Tech fails to convert of third down.

Guess this was the only way to keep the insect faithful from running for the North Avenue MARTA station.

Dawgs, I would like to see a Southern Cal and UGA match up in the Rose Bowl, good for SEC and Western exposure, plus I think dawgs would win. Great season, its exciting for the State and UGA fans. Auburn had a nice win and will be just fine next year, hopefully in the same position for a BCS bowl. Suitcase Saban might be looking for a job next year if we go 7 in a row.>>>>It looks like Bama will be left out of the bowl picture this year>>>> maybe Shreveport, LA where La Monroe is located!!!

War Eagle, I agree. USC vs UGA would be intriguing. USC looked awfully good the other night so it would be a big challenge. My gut tells me if Illinois is in the top 14 the Rose would likely select them just to keep that Big Ten and PAC Ten thing going. I bet Pete Carroll and company would prefer to play the Dawgs.

I suspect you guys will be in Atlanta to hammer an ACC team. Maybe BC or Clemson. Whatever, hope you guys win. Good win last night. BTW, was that Dog handler a Bama fan? Took a bite out of your DB in the endzone.

SEC v. ACC - 2007 Results

Univ. of SC beat Univ. of NC LSU beat Virginia Tech Florida beat Florida State Georgia beat Georgia Tech four wins for SEC

Florida State beat Alabama Clemson beat South Carolina Wake Forest beat Vanderbilt three wins for ACC

Record in 2007: 4 to 3 in favor of the SEC. Total points: SEC - 197 v. ACC - 126.

To the idiot Tech fan who keeps posting the 2-4 record under various names… I thought you were supposed to be good at math. I hope you are not engineering any large buildings downtown anytime soon.

Fire Richt.com,Do yourself a favor and become a Clemson fan or a jacket!Anyone who says fire Mark is a total idiot who doesn’t Knowshon or UGA football. Before Mark, UGA was always 7-4, 8-3,but with Mark we have averaged ten wins a season!

War Eagle,it’s cool a rival realizes that UGA has turned up the dial, and could play with anyone in the country right now!GO DAWGS!!!

Enjoy Atlanta, UT. It will be YEARS before you have another easy SEC schedule and manage to win the East. Oh, but you’ll be welcomed back to the Peach Bowl!

Last time I checked a BCS Bowl was better that the Peach Bowl. Its all good that the VOLS get to go to the SEC Championship! Good Luck with that! But oooohhh if you lose you will be right back to where you know the most. Atlanta GA Peach Bowl Bound

Congratulations to the VOLS 9-4 season and I will even through a bone to GT for getting rid of Chan Gailey today! Better luck next year!

Happy Dawg!

Hey tech fans; your WR dropped a WIDE OPEN TOUCHDOWN early in the 1st quarter!!! He makes that catch and your up 2 TDs early!! Was that the refs fault too?!?!? Face it. Better athletes, facilities, coaches, town, women and now a degree from your school is no longer superior. HOW DOES IT FEEL?!?!!?!

I think it’d be poetic justice for GT to get Will Muschamp as HC. Could/might happen! Don’t say that he’s not good either! A LOT of you wanted him to come and take WM’s place.

BTW, what is the point spread in the SECCG with UT/LSU? UT will win in a close one. LSU’s just as tired as Tenn, but they’re also dejected after losing to an unranked Ark squad. UT will (now) also have the home crowd on their hands since many Tiger fans won’t bother making the trip to Atlanta.

Better luck next year pups.
