UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Keep your hand on the TV clicker

I’ve caught a lot of heat, particularly from fans of teams other than Georgia, about outlining a scenario in which the Bulldogs could play for the national championship this season. And that’s fine. That’s what these forums are for, to give people a place and an opportunity to express their views and opinions.

But as I’m sure many of you guys saw, Step One of that scenario was completed Thursday night as Southern Cal steamrolled Arizona State in Tempe. Since the Sun Devils were ranked one spot ahead of the No. 7 Bulldogs in the BCS rankings, it should follow that Georgia should move up. That would only happen, of course, if the Dogs took care of Step Three, which is to beat Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Saturday (3:30 p.m., ABC).

By halftime of its game, Georgia should know whether or not Step Two was successful. Success, of course, would mean Kentucky was able to beat Tennessee for the first time in 23 years, one of the Giant Ifs in this formula. Those two kick off at 1:30 p.m. (CBS), so Dogs fans watching from home likely will be wearing out the “jump” button on their remotes during the first half of the Tech game. That is, assuming UK-UT is still a game in the second half.

You won’t be able to watch on TV to see if the “Biggest If” in the formula comes through in Georgia’s favor - Step Four: UConn (9-2) defeating No. 3 West Virginia (9-1) at Moutaineer Field. However, ABC may offer you a few glimpses. It is one of three regional games ABC is broadcasting Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (the other one is Oregon-UCLA).

Finally, if all that works in Georgia’s favor - as you can see it would have to be quite a fortuitous day for the Dogs - then UGA fans might be more apt to watch ABC’s 8 p.m. broadcast of No. 2 Kansas at No. 4 Missouri in Kansas City, Mo., rather than ESPN’s 8 p.m. showing of Alabama at Auburn. Missouri over Kansas is Step Five but it’s not an absolutely necessary step. A Jayhawks’ win and then a loss in the Big 12 would serve as an adequate substitute scenario.

The bottom line is this: What a Saturday to be a college football fan and a Georgia fan in particular and watching games at home on television! Never have the Bulldogs had more of a vested interest in what all is going on elsewhere, except of course 1980 when they found themselves rooting for Georgia Tech against Notre Dame (the Yellow Jackets came through with a 3-3 tie for youngsters).

Again, I’m well aware all this is quite a long shot for Georgia and I qualifed that when I first broached the subject. But it is a real possibility and sure is fun to follow.

So which of these steps do you believe are most likely to happen and which are least likely to happen? Anyway the Huskies can handle West Virginia in Morgantown? Can UK break the streak? Can Tech break the streak?

Beats me but you can be sure I’ll be watching on the tube up in Wisconsin. Well, at least after Georgia’s basketball game against the Badgers is over and I’ve filed my story. That’s right. I’m going to miss a lot of it. But you can bet I’ll have multiple browsers open.

What an exciting weekend to be a Bulldog fan! I look forward to seeing the ‘Dogs give the bees a sound swatting on Grant Field. A UT fan was telling me last week how fierce the border rivalry between Tennessee and Kentucky has become. I look forward to seeing Kentucky break Tennessee’s win streak tomorrow.

It’s highly unlikely that UConn will be able to pull off a victory over WVa, but I’ll be cheering for the Huskies. I like Missouri’s chances over Kansas as well.

Does anyone like FSU’s chances against Florida? How about Hawaii vs. Boise State? The ‘Noles did manage to beat a strong BC team this year. Besides, are they really going to award the Heisman to a 3 or 4-loss QB? With a win over Boise State, Colt Brennan should be in the thick of the Heisman running.

Until then… GO DAWGS!

I was a the Falcon’s game last night. Sitting in section 131 row #30. Right across the aisle from me in section 130 was the fatest, drunkest Manning fan I have ever seen. He noticed a man wearing a Georgia hat in the row in front of me and started berating him about his mighty Vols. Nothing would please me more than to have his mighty Vols lose to lowly Kentucky and have those nasty Bulldogs representing the East.

Please Coach Richt, prepare yourself and the team. You are facing the most diabolical mind in college football, CHAN! Just writing his name sends chills down my spine. What other mad genuis would intentionally lose to UGA every single time just to get us overconfidant. Let’s face it, even the Tech fans have no idea the genuis level of this super-extroidinary coach. But with some help from some wealthy UGA alumni and some candid photo shots of some of the state regents, CHAN has been annointed HEAD COACH FOR LIFE! Oh the inhumanity of it all.

What’s that smoking over at Tech, it’s Chan the man driving the rambling wreck.

Either that or the team got their weekly ganga delivery.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

Chip as usual a great topic to get the discussion started.

As for those steps you were talking about I think # 2 may be the toughest as IMHO Tennessee has had Kentucky’s number and those things are hard to overcome. As you have to not only beat the other team but you somehow have to convince yourself that you will win. As for WV and CT no one is giving CT a chance so I believe they may just pull the upset.

I do believe Mizzu will fall to KU but will lose to OK or TX…

Been a fun season.. If UGA gets to the UGA Dome Dec 1, Great.. If not, it’s still been a very successful regular season with a record of 10 - 2…

Thanks Chip for reminding us that this really is the fun of college football!!! How many of you (rivalry’s and differences aside) simply just look forward to the College Football season every year? I am regularly counting down the days to kickoff after the final second has ticked off of the clock for the BCS Bowl. These are good days - win or lose. And this year has proven to be a gangbuster due to the parity in the leagues. It’s great to be at this point in the season, and not have to be told who will be playing for the NC by the host of sports writer gurus. Instead, they are as out in left field as everyone is this year in terms of predictions. Tony, I applaud your attempt to bring the fun into the predictions - humbly reminding the readers that you are simply guessing based on the history of the season. Great job and thanks!

Now, to all of you idiot morons who dog on Tony for his picks, how many of you have the kahunas to make your own picks - right here on the AJC blog? It’s easy to pick at a willing target - go ahead wise-a$$ - pick em!

I’ll start:

LSU-Arkansas - Arkansas Upsets 20-17 UT-UK - Kentucky breaks streak 34-13 UGA-GT - UGA falls, too many distractions 14-10 (I’m a HUGE Dawg fan!) Mizzou-Kansas - Mizzou wins 45-27 WVU-UConn - WVU at home 34-10 Auburn-AL - Alabama redeems itself 28-21

So… jackwads (meaning all of the non-UGA fans on our boards) go for it! Then go back to your own pathetic discussion boards (I’ve checked the official UT discussion boards and blogs… yeah, no Dawg fans wasting time up there - surprised that they’re still here?)

I’m not. Dorks.

Step #2 doesnt even necessarily have to happen for the Dawgs to get to the BCS title game. As long as LSU falls (today or next week, even if to UT), BIG 12 north team falls in Championship game, and WVU falls to either UCONN or Pitt, Dawgs still have a chance to be playing for it all against the Buckeyes (unless the voters decide to let some teams jump the Dawgs). I know you non-Dawg fans hate to hear it, but it’s a lot more attainable than you want to admit. (of course, it remains that the nerds could make it all moot if they win tomorrow).

By Matthew

I think the hardest piece in this scenario is the UCONN vs WVU game, but everything else seems to be falling into place.

Some have speculated that with USC’s win over Arizona State that they could jump over Georgia… but that would be a jump of six spots with a loss to lowly Stanford. I don’t see that happening.

Georgia will end the weekend in the BCS top 5 with a match up against the number one team in the nation. A win next week (should Tennessee fall tomorrow and LSU hold on today) against the #1 team, should be enough to jump Ohio State.

Either way… we end this season in the top three with a sophomore QB and a freshman RB… not to mention the young defense starters and young O-line. This year is a spectacular appetizer for the next two seasons.

And Tennessee fans, every comment you post, you show how jealous you are.

You know… even with LSU’s loss, if Georgia plays them in the SEC Championship it’s still a game between two top-ten teams. I don’t think everyone is taking into account what happens if we beat Tech (which is the biggest if to me right now) and then DON’T play in the SECCG. I think LSU’s loss hurts us in that scenario because the BCS may only want one SEC team, which would have to be Tennessee or LSU. Of course, being where we’d be in the polls at that point, we’d still be a pretty attractive at large team. Man, I don’t know anything about this season anymore. Let’s just beat Tech!!! Has anyone else ever seen Tech this motivated?

I’m afraid this will hurt us with LSU out of NAT CHAMP game if they play Tenn. winner goes to SUGAR what happens to us?

By Chip Towers

November 23, 2007 7:54 PM | Link to this

LSU’s loss was NOT the best scenario for Georgia but it is not a deal-killer. The Dogs’ odds would be better beating a No. 1-ranked LSU team in the SEC championship game… . Where it could effect Georgia more profoundly would be if the Dogs do not go to the championship. If LSU wins they’re now in the Sugar Bowl as the SEC champ. Guess so for Tennessee, too. So Dogs bowl prospects are altered… . Who knows, maybe Orange if they win out.

By Bob

November 23, 2007 7:58 PM | Link to this

Regardless of what happens WVU would have to lose to UCONN and even in this goofy year, that is unlikely. Now we would have to win the SEC to go to New Orleans so we really have to hope the Cats can win tomorrow. We might/possibly/probably get into another BCS game if we go 10-2 and miss out on the SEC CG. Plus, like it or not, USC will have picked up a bunch of style points yesterday. It probably would be best if USC wins out and Oregon loses, reducing the PAC 10 to 1 BCS team in the Rose.

But as others have pointed out, it won’t mean crap unless we buck this upsetting season trend and spank the Jackets.

By La Jolla Dawg

November 23, 2007 7:58 PM | Link to this

RugbyDawg, I am wondering the same thing. If we don’t play in SECCG then we don’t go to the Sugar Bowl. It is hard to believe that if we beat Tech and wind up 10-2 with no loss since October 6th that we won’t go to a BCS bowl, but it looks like that would be the case due to LSU’s loss today. Winner of SECCG automatically goes to Sugar Bowl—right? Chip?

Chip … isn’t there a rule that if you are in the Top 4 or 5, you automatically must be selected as an At-Large team (if not a conference champion). I find it hard to believe that if we win tomorrow, we will not be a Top 4 (hopping over ASU, LSU, and loser of Kansas/Missouri). Then next week, when Oklahoma beats the Kansas/Missouri winner … we’ll be #3. The #3 ranked BCS team is DEFINITELY going to a BCS bowl!!! Come on UCONN!!!

By Bob

November 23, 2007 8:12 PM | Link to this

If we don’t get to the Dome, I think this is the way it will shake out.

Big 10…one team to Rose (OSU)..next best team with 3 losses

ACC…winner will have 2 losses…goes to Orange Bowl. No other team with less than 3 losses

Big East…WVU probably to NC Game. No other BCS team

Big XII..KU, Mizzou or OU. Two teams make BCS from Big XII. Only two teams allowed per conference. I think Mizzou plays WVU for NC and KU gets at large.

PAC 10..USC, Oregon, ASU all still possible. Best Scenario would be for USC to win out and have Oregon lose. I doubt ASU is a threat to UGA if the Dawgs win out.

Non-BCS Now with Texas and ASU losing, I expect Boise or Hawaii to get to #12 and a probable Sugar bid.

Scientific Wild A$$ Guess that will be worthless by mid-afternoon tomorrow:

NC….WVU vs Mizzou Rose..USC vs OSU Fiesta..KU vs Arizona State Sugar…LSU vs Boise Orange..Va Tech vs UGA

By CapeCodDawg

There’s just no way that UConn will beat WVU even though they have a highly ranked defense.Just wont happen. They haven’t seen the type of athletes and speed that WVU has…and its insane.

By Eric C.

November 23, 2007 8:16 PM | Link to this

For those doubting UGA’s BCS chances, I can’t see them getting left out if they finish 10-2. As it stands, they would move up to the 4th spot in the BCS and it is hard to imagine the 4th place team getting left out. Has that happened? Now, I would be concerned about Va Tech and/or OU (if they win big 12 CG) leap-frogging UGA…that might be a bit shakier.

That’s right, La Jolla. Winner of SECCG is automatic to Sugar Bowl UNLESS the winner is in the BCS championship game. That remains very unlikely for Georgia but still possible. Gotta have some help from UConn and Oklahoma as far as that goes but still numerous scenarios. There’s a chance Georgia could be the highest-ranked team left out of a BCS bowl but not likely, J-Mo. … Main thing still, gotta beat Tech.

By J-Mo

November 23, 2007 10:54 PM | Link to this

OK, here are the rules. There are 6 BCS conferences with an automatic birth. The NON-BCS conferences can have a qualifier if ranked in Top 12 (i.e. Boise State or Hawaii from WAC). Notre Dame won’t be going this year - LOL!!! Thus, there will be at least THREE At-Large bids. The first At Large would go the #3 ranked BCS team (if not a conference winner); the #4 ranked BCS team (if not a conference winner) would be the next At-Large winner. As a result … if Georgia is ranked #3 or even #4(if UGA and Tenn. win tomorrow and Missouri/Kansas winner loses next week), which is looking pretty good right now … we’ll be going to a BCS bowl. I can’t really see a scenario where Tennessee wins SEC and UGA wouldn’t be ranked in Top 4 (and LSU will be nowhere near us with 3 losses). Let’s go UCONN!!!

There have now been 12 top ten teams lose to unranked opponets this year, which broke the record a long time ago. So why not WVU? Stranger things have happened: USC-Stanford, Michigan-Appalachian State. With that in mind, we cannot afford to look ahead at any scenario tomorrow.

If we win on the flats, we’ll no doubt be the highest ranked SEC team on Monday. If UT takes UK in Lexington, we’ll have a two-loss team playing a three-loss team for the crown. UT can ruin the SEC. Oklahoma can ruin the Big-12.

UGA is the highest ranked two-loss team in the nation, over some high-profile programs including the Trojans, the Sooners and the Hokies. How silly we must’ve sounded with all the crazy BCS talk earlier. I won’t guarantee a win tomorrow, but I won’t say “Wait ‘til next year” either.

I say just take care of business, Dawgs, and let the chips fall where they may. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it?

FWIW….I think winner of Missouri/Kansas lose to Oklahoma next week. WVU wins out and plays OSU for nat’l title. UGA beats Tech and goes to either Fiesta vs. Oklahoma, or Rose vs. USC/Oregon.

Different topic…. why should I be worried about Tech? I’m 31 and we are 23-8 vs. tech. To me they are not a rival of ours like Aub, Tenn., or Fla. Richt has not lost to tech, and Chan has not beat UGA. Am I just an overconfident UGA fan, or have I seen this UGA team enough to believe that they will always find a way to win this game?

Kmart, I could be wrong about this, but I believe UT was ranked when they beat us, and they are ranked now. USC was ranked for several weeks during the season, perhaps not when then beat us, but they still were ranked. Also, we beat UF(ranked #6 when we beat them) Bama (ranked #16 when we beat them) Auburn (ranked #18 when we beat them) and Kentuck (ranked #23 when we beat them). That’s pretty darn good.

Actually South Carolina was ranked when we played them and rose as high as # 6 before all those debilatating injuries started catching up to them. Tennessee wasn’t ranked when we played them but have risen to # 19 AP or # 18 BCS.

kmart: I don’t necessarily disagree with you that Georgia may be ranked a little too high but it is what it is. The computers and writers and coaches are all putting them up there. What do you want them to do, decline the ranking? … . And Willysee, that’s why you need to hang out here. As long as you’re not lewd, crude and/or racist, your opinions are welcomed.

Wiily, you must have posted that Gen Neyland and I were the same person again. We have the NSA monitoring you for posts like that and we then get you blacklisted. This should keep you from messing with two former government deep cover agents. Unfortunately the AJC uses the first ammendment to stop us. Now you know that the FANS OF CHAN is actually a group of former government operatives.

Congrats Gen Neyland. You beat us fair and square on the field and earned a hard fought win today. That blocked FG was crucial.

4th Quarter. Let’s take care of business!! GO DAWGS!!!!

Congrats to TN for winning the SEC East. You deserve it and I hope that General Neyland is enjoying having a shot at the SEC Title.

War Eagle, congrats on number 6 against Alabama.

How do Al fans feel about Saban. He has only about twice as many wins as his QB has names. At $4,000,000 a year, AL is paying about $750K per win. For The Tide is looks like a new coach with the same results as the last three or four coaches??
