UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Buck from NW gets best seat in house

Today’s blog is dedicated to Price Cochran.

Say you don’t know who he is? Yeah you do. He’s better known as “Buck from the Northwest” in this space. He’s one of the most loyal bloggers I know of and, as I’m proud to say, one of the most sensible and even-keeled.

As “Cuz” announced in a small post on the previous blog, Buck passed away yesterday after a yearlong battle with cancer. Now I won’t profess to knowing Mr. Cochran very well though we did exchange a couple of personal e-mails in the past few months.

The most cherished of those I received was when Buck finally got to go to the Georgia-Florida game this year. It was his last wish.

He was so happy to have finally seen in person what all the fuss is about. And then his beloved Bulldogs went out and won one of the more amazing games any of us have ever seen.

Anyway, Buck sent me a link to a “shockwave photo jam” website where the pictures he took during that trip to Jacksonville are posted. “So you can see what one of your bloggers looks like,” he wrote to me then. By the grace of God I saved that e-mail and that link and I’m going to encourage y’all to check it out today:

http://www.shockwave.com/contentPlay/photojam4.jsp?doc=8370657/1193787051681_403.

Meanwhile, I’ll include below the notice from Cuz of Buck’s death. After that I’d say it’s only fitting to make “thankfulness” the theme of today’s blog (I won’t be posting tomorrow but I will on Friday). Let’s keep it Bulldog-based though.

So you guys tell me what about the Georgia Bulldogs you’re most thankful for. You know, Knowshon or Richt or beautiful fall Saturdays or what have you.

And remember to tip your cap toward the sky on Saturday because you know ol’ Buck from the Northwest is going to be looking down on his Dogs as they toil with Tech on the Flats.

Happy Thanksgiving y’all.

Here’s Cuz’s original note:

It is with deep regret that I inform the Bulldawg Nation of the passing of Buck Cochran in the Northwest. Buck has had terminal cancer for over a year and he and I have talked and corresponded for a long time. He was a true friend. a loyal fan, a staunch Matthew Stafford supporter and a defender of Dawg sports from any outside hater. But he also had a love for sports period, especially college ball which enabled him to become great friends with Gen Neyland and an admirer of Wareagle.

Buck never complained about the hand that life had dealt him. He and I were firmly convinced that he was just going to a better place with great seats.

Buck was able to see his beloved Dawgs one last time this year when he attended the beatdown, our turn, in JAX. If some of you remember, I said I knew we would win because I had a good luck charm attending the game. I knew there was no way we would lose Buck’s final game. The dawgs gave him a going away present that he cherished. The trip took alot out of him, but he told me that he would have it no other way.

Our season is not over, we have one tough regular season game left with Tech and a bowl game to go. Buck’s race is done, and he has taken the prize that was waiting for him in the end. I mourn the loss of a good friend, but I celebrate the life of a great man and a true Dawg fan. Buck and Erk will be watching the game together this Saturday. God rest you Buck and save me a seat. I will see you in the bye and bye.

Thanks Chip for this one last tribute to Buck. Its funny how you can become close friends with someone you never met, but he was that kind of person. He loved life, the Georgia Bulldogs and college football in general. I enjoyed talking to him through these blogs as well as over the phone the last year and a half and I have an empty place in my heart. Once again Thanks Chip and may our Father God and our Lord and Savior hold him in their loving arms forevermore.

My prayers go to Buck’s family and friends. I always enjoyed reading his comments. You are in a far better place now. We all need to realize that football is just part of our lives even though it sometimes consumes most of our thoughts and energy. I am thankful for being part of the Bulldawg Nation. Go Dawgs

I haven’t been on this blog long enough to really know Buck in the NW as well as I wish I could have.

But he’s been a defender of mine for this year, since I began blogging, even when we disagreed. We always had a mutual agreement that Stafford and only Stafford should be the Dawgs starting QB.

I hope his family is doing well during this time, because I know Buck is finally doing fine. He’s up there right now talking to Charlie Trippi about the Single Wing, I know it.

And I don’t know what will be on his tombstone, or if he will even have one, but I hope it reads something like this:

Price “Buck” Cochran

A Bulldog born, a Bulldog bred

Here he lies, a Bulldog dead

By the Grace of God, a Damn Good Dawg

Now boys, go out and and do your best for our friend Buck in the NW!!!

Go Dawgs!

Buck was a big Nascar fan as well and he pulled for Jeff Gordon. As for a tombstone he will not have one as he has requested cremation with his ashes being spread in Jacksonville. Yes he was a Good Dawg and he is with the Father and Jesus now looking down on all of us.

Big Dawg,

I know he was a big Gordon guy (so am I). In the very few blogs or columns written on the subject this last year, we’ve had the chance to talk. He was actually really excited about Junior becoming Gordon’s new partner.

And him and I also shared a distaste for the (unfortunately) current Champion, the punk Jimmy Johnson.

I wish we could have talked more about NASCAR, because I think he and I could have connected even more on that.

Cuz, I know you’re out there and I know you’re mourning your friend. As well as to his family, I send my condolences out to you. You’ve lost a good friend and I know how hard that is. I’m sorry.

After the game, I promised him that he would NEVER miss another Ga-Fla game as long as Daddy was “breathing”. Of course, we will be at “Grunt” field on Saturday trying to complete the sweep of Florida, Auburn and Tech. Go Dogs!!

Don’t guess I’ll ever watch Stafford play without thinking of Buck. He’s probably up there getting a tour business put together so he can show us all around when we catch up with him. Maybe his reptile relative will stop by and visit us here on the blog from time to time. I’ll miss you Buck and I’ll try to make sure that no one comes around here taking the name of Stafford in vain.

Buck Cochran’s words on these blogs will be missed, but not forgotten. He was true to his Dawgs, never once do I remember him calling for the firing of Asst coaches or the HC…He did feel CMR should have used Caleb King this year, as most of you concured…He had his opinion and didn’t mind standing behind it.

I use to call Buck in the later evening hours ,ET, which put him early evening, PT…We’d chat about whatever he wanted to. I asked him about family, he’d tell me his stories of how he became interested in the tour guide business and how much he loved meeting people… Mostly, we’d talk football, not just UGA, but football.

He never fudged on the reality of his situation, never complained of a raw deal. He mentioned he had had a good life and was ready to meet his Maker. His faith sustained him throughout.

The last few days he was able to spend in his apartment, he watched the UGA-UF game repeatedly. I would like to take this opportunity to express my personal gratitude to his Church for assisting him in getting to JAX. They bore a load of Buck’s trip…His Reptile Relative family, Hal and Dee, made sure his trip to JAX would be comfortable and enjoyable.

Knowing Buck for just a brief moment of our lives has made us all richer. Rest well, Buck…

Buck was truly a class act and a old school blogger. I have often mentioned of the days when we paid thirty dolaars to be a member of the AJC and Buck was one of those original bloggers. I never had the chance to truly bond and build a relationship like several fellow bloggers here had, and that is my loss. Thnak god that one day we will have that chance.

My heart felt condolences to Buck in the NW’s family. I know he is in a better place and will have a hella-uva seat this Saturday with Erk and Grizzard!

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving my fellow bloggers!

Buck mentioned meeting up in Jcksonville last month adding that it would probably be his last trip there.I didn’t know what he meant, maybe I should have.My dad died last year and I went to the game with a brother I hadn’t seen since the funeral. After learning from my brother he’d have to be at work because of an emergency on monday I thought about it most of that week before letting Buck (Price) know I wouldn’t have time to get together.I wish I’d known his condition I would have made time, I know my brother would have understood.I’m not unfailingly possitive like Price was,as my dad used to say it takes all kinds I do know this world would be a colder place if not for his type,I’ll say again, he’ll be missed.

For those who might be having trouble with copying and pasting the URL for the slide show, the period at the end is not part of the URL. It should be simply

Anyone that would like to see the photo jam of Buck at the Party, send me an e-mail with Buck and Party. I will send the photo jam to you. I would like to warn you. Knowing what we know, that Buck burned at least a month of his life to do this, it is emotional. But is is awesome. I have been unable to post since the eulogy I posted that Chip re-printed. I will be back soon, but right now I am a little out of sorts. Anyone that would like to see Buck at the Party e-mail me at emrbg@aol.com . I will send it to you, if this does not get you fired up, go to the Tech blog for free pizza and a coke.

NCT, it works, I just tried it. What many of you will not know is that Buck had seats in the nosebleed section. When he showed up in a wheelchair, the staff said wait a minute. The grabed a person working the game and said, put him in the disabled section. Those are the seats you see Buck in. Down on the field watching like he was on the sidelines. He raved on the staff at the Gatorbowl for taking care of him. Much props to those who cared to take care of my friend. You have no idea the impact you made.

This is truly humbling. I lurk here and have read Bucks comments. His impact on so many is inspiring, to say the least. I didn’t know him, but I see in the affection felt for him that he touched a great many lives. For that, I have to say “thanks” for embodying all that it means to be a true Dawg. On Saturday, I’ll have “Buck” scrawled on my hat as I watch the Dawgs take care of business in Atl. Wouldn’t it be a sight for him as he watches from above to see his name on the hats of the Dawg nation?

Rest in peace, Buck. Keep the faith. The Dawgs can never have too many angels looking down upon them.

I’m Buck’s reptile cousin in Jacksonville. I wish to thank each of you for the friendship you extended to Buck over the web. We would talk almost every night since he learned last winter of the terminal nature of his illness. He would often mentioned your blogger names in our conversations and I just marveled at the number of friends he had developed by the web. A little background you may not know. His mother and mine were sisters and we were both born in Douglas, Ga. His family moved to Jax, Fl. before mine did. We would travel to Jax and attend the GA.-Fla. game in the early 50’s (Bob Woodruff & Wally Butts, era) and stay with Buck’s family. At that time, he was a staunch GATOR and I was a true DAWG. It wasn’t until we graduated from H.S. and I attended UF and he went to UGA that we changed our loyalties. May God bless each of you. Hal Taylor

To Buck’s Gator Cousin,

I’m truly sorry for your loss, Sir. He looked very happy in those pictures, and I’m glad he got to spend his last Cocktail Party happy and maybe getting in some good natured ribbing at your expense.

I only wish that I started blogging earlier and had become a founding member of the FOC with he, Cuz, Altamaha, Hunker Down, and the others. And I also wish he and I could have talked some NASCAR shop, because of all the Dawg fans here, he really got NASCAR and how it is the great American sport.

Take it to heart that your cousin touched many lives of people he never met simply because he was a gracious member of the Bulldog Nation.

And Buck’s Reptile Cousin… remember one thing: It doesn’t matter if he was a Gator fan early in life. Remember, we’re not born perfect. We attend the University of Georgia and emerge perfect as a died in the wool graduate and lifetime member of the Bulldog Nation.

To echo what others have said, I know he’s up there right now preparing a great tailgate for all of us.

Buck, we may not all arrive there at the same time (some will arrive later than others, and some may arrive before they are ready), but always remember to keep the Terrapin on ice and the charcoal hot. And I take my steak medium with a baked sweet potato and an ear of white corn.

Hal-

We hope you’ll come back and spend more time with us. Buck was a special blogger among the regulars here. He used to drive me absolutely nuts with his feelings on Stafford. It was almost like Buck himself drove Stafford out to Athens and convinced him to become a Bulldog. When Stafford did something good in a game, Buck was quick with the “I-told-you-so” posts. There is no way in Hell I thought we would beat Florida this year, but now I understand why… Fla didn’t stand a chance with Buck in the stands pulling for Stafford and the Dawgs. I can only imagine that it made it easier for Buck to let go of this brittle thread we call life, after “willing” the Dawgs to victory in Jax. I know that Buck had looked forward to his trip to Jax and it appears thru the video that you made his trip as comfortable as he could have had it. It truly puts a smile on my face to know that ole Buck got to witness a dream come true right before his very eyes, in his last days here on earth. God bless and keep you and your family.

May God bless NorthwestDawg! That’s what we called him when I began blogging two years ago. I’ve never considered myself amongst the “regulars” but there was a time (when I had time) when I read the blogs every single day.

Though I rarely posted, I could easily identify the one constant on the Bulldog beat blog, as well as Bill’s blawg, and that was Buck Cochran of the NW!

Long working hours in recent times have deprived me of daily reading, and that is exactly how I feel today, deprived. I knew Buck was battling cancer that was accelerating, but like many of you I didn’t realize the severity of the situation.

My last interaction with Buck was before the game in Jax. When he announced that he was attending the “party”, I felt good about our chances, and all during the game I thought of him. What a thrill it must’ve been to see “his boy” engineer such a monumental win on a glorious day.

Upon returning to the blog just a couple days ago, I was devastated to learn about the unfortunate events leading up to this truly sad day. I asked Cuz to e-mail me about the details, and he not only sent me the crushing news, but he added a highly emotional tribute to our fallen comrade that has left me numb for days.

Cuz, if you are reading this, thank you for that theraputic session, and I will return an e-mail soon.

Bulldog Nation has lost a hero, a real supporter who stood by his morals. And in this day and age when there are so few like him, he has taught us that courage and perseverance can earn a well-deserved dedication. Thanks Chip.

There is a huge void in the blog today, a hidden treasure that will never be forgotten. And since I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye, let me take this opportunity to say: Fare thee well old friend, we will miss you, and may you find peace in heaven, Buck Cochran.

I had known Buck in high school, but had no contact with him since early sixties. I was not aware of his avid support of the Dawgs until I met a relative of his within the last few years. Having also attended UGA, I, too, am a big fan and am extremely glad that Buck got to attend the great Ga/Fla game, thanks to Jim D., and see the Dawgs win. We also would be on the phone together during the games and he actually called me during the GA/FL game. Of course it was so loud we couldn’t hardly hear each other but it was still a great jesture on his part knowing how much I wanted to be at the game as well. As for this Saturday I hope the Dawgs take care of business.

It’s always easy to be a great BullDawg fan sitting somewhere in Dawgs country. The thing I think I’ll remember most about Buck is how he described being the ONLY person in the bar/resturant out there wearing a UGA hat, insisting that the rest of the place turn on the UGA game. I can see it now, everyone saying, “who the heck is that” eventually pulling for the red and black before the game is over.

I had the privilege of being Buck’s pastor in Seattle. We occasionally sat at Starbucks and Buck would regale me with tales of his beloved UGA, and non-flattering tales of those reptiles (his word for Gators). Buck’s faith will always be an inspiration to me. He loved his Dawgs and loved and trusted his Lord even more. Buck, put in a good word for my floundering Ducks!

The prime difference in the 2007 and the 2006 DAWGS is Moreno. Without him we would not be as good as the 2006 team. However, if we put 11 Morenos on the field at the same time for all our games we would would now be 0-11. He is the difference but the others make the team jell.

What a great tribute to a DGD. I’m thankful for that. Unfortunately for me I didn’t have a close relationship with Buck as other FOC but became email pen pals at the end of his journey. We volleyed blogs for the last couple of years and he was always a treat and an example of good decent people who loved football and the Georgia Bulldogs. The dignity and grace in which he accepted his end is truly an inspiration for us all. I am a much better man for knowing him.

You rest in peace my friend and go long, we’ll celebrate in the end zone.

I’ve been reading this blog and posting occasionally for about 2 years now, and Buck’s posts were always among the ones I enjoyed reading most. I’ll definitely miss his posts and his voice of sanity during periods of chaos. God bless you and your family.

On the topic of thankfulness, I’m glad we at Georgia have such a quality man at the helm of our program. Coach Richt is, to be cliched, the epitome of class. At the same time, he knows how to push the buttons of this team and get them excited and jacked up to play each week, which in turn jacks up our fans. I hope he never leaves.

Lastly, thank you Chip for honoring Buck with this blog. Although we are of all different ages and backgrounds here, all hiding behind the veil of the internet, we are a little community none the less. That’s pretty cool.

Happy Thanksgiving y’all and BEAT TECH!

I would like to take this moment to thank the AJC for giving us this forum. I have met some truly great friends through the blawg.

I would also like to thank all the people that have said such kind words about Buck. There were only two people like Buck in the whole world. He was both of them.

Thanks Chip for this column. It means alot to me and other friends and readers of Buck’s comments.

I would like to thank Vince Dooley for finding such a class act for a head coach. Coach Richt has embraced the concept of the Bulldawg Nation and he realizes his role is not just to win games, but to make better men.

I would like to thank the team for not giving up after the disaster on the checkerboard. You showed us you are true Dawgs all.

I would like to thank the Noble and Sacred Order of the FANS OF CHAN. Hopefully we can save CHAN’S job one more time after we beat the dawg out of them this Saturday.

And last and not least, I would like to thank my friend Buck Cochran for letting me be a small part of his life and making me a better man because of my knowing him. I will always remember you my friend, you lived your life with dignity and grace. Our loss is heaven’s gain. Save me a seat in that skybox, I will join you eventually.

Hey y’all.

I wanted to take this moment to come back to the blog to profess my great sadness that one of the great Damn Good Dawgs is now watching the Dawgs with the Lord.

I left the blogs awhile ago because I got sick and tired of the ignorant faction that took over after the site went free.

Along with some of you, I was an original.

I paid for the service.

And yeah, I could be an ornary cuss quite willing to argue with everyone, but it was more civil than when the ignorant faction who would never pay got to do this for free and ruined the blogs.

So I left.

But not before I had the chance to have a few discusions with Buck in the NW.

He really was my favorite blogger here.

And even though I left and stopped blogging, I still read the blogs every day.

I really think it’s funny when people accuse random people of being me, as if only I was the ONLY person unhappy with Bobby Cox, or loved Michael Vick (not so much now).

Irregardless, Buck made the blogs more civil, and I have a feeling things will just get worse now that he’s not around any longer.

So, Buck, tread the soft paths my friend.

Enjoy the place where you are now, which I believe is heaven, where it’s always autumn and you and Lewis Grizzard can sit and discuss Matthew Stafford, Herschel Walker, and every bit of Bulldog minutiae until your heart is contented.

I know others have said it before me on this blog, but Buck, By the Grace of God, you were and still are a Damn Good Dawg, and you will be forever missed.

Thanks, y’all.

I’ll be reading.

Mike T,

I am thankful to have a great coach who is a man of God and decency. I am thankful to the Dawg Nation for supporting the seniors during the Auburn game. I am truly thankful for the support and unity shown here for the late Price Cochran, including the ‘Nation, War Eagle, Gen Neyland, Atl Gator and others. I am also thankful to the many flamers who have shown the decency to avoid this blog, especially during UGA-Tech week. You know they are chomping at the bit to see another blog.

My condolences go out to the Cochran family, including Hal and Dee, Cuz, Gen Neyland, and others who were closest to him. Godspeed Buck, and go Dawgs!

Chip, awesome blog to a damn good dawg. Thanks. And thanks for the links to Buck’s trip. I didn’t need to shed any tears today but who couldn’t help it if you have been posting on here for any length of time and knew Buck. Buck’s support of Stafford was relentless and I will always think of him as Buck’s boy.

I remember a few posts but didn’t know Buck very well. Wish I had.

Buck obviously began his ascent into the hereafter by going to Jacksonville. His heavenly reward began that day. I notice that Buck was not without the G cap during the whole pictorial.

Here’s to a DGD. Rest in peace buck. Enjoy your front row seat in the ultimate sky box.

Although I’m no fan of football, I came to this site to read the dedication to Price and am so touched by all the tributes from his cyber friends.

My husband and I got to know Price through our church and he became a friend. Price was a real presence in our congregation. Whenever he volunteered to be a scripture reader he didn’t just read from the Bible - he memorized the whole passage and delivered it with a drama worthy of the stage. And after the service at coffee hour he preached the good news about football!

I’d like you all to know that Dick Lootens, who shot and produced the Photo Jam of Price’s trip has been an incredible support for Price. Besides making all the arrangements for the trip and accompanying him, Dick has spent countless hours ministering to Price’s needs as he became less able to care for himself.

I last spoke with Price on the phone last Thursday when he had been taken to the hospital. It seemed at first that he was going to rally one more time and be able to go back home to his apartment but his body was done and instead he went to his real home to be with God his Father. Touchdown!

I just learned of NorthWestDawg’s passing from an email from Cuz. I told Buck he could change his handle all he wanted but he would always be NW to me. I am deeply saddened although I knew the severity of his condition. NW was a koolaid drinking supporter of Matt Stafford from the beginning and I’ll never watch Matt and not think of Buck. A DAMN GOOD DAWG and I’m gonna miss his passion and enthusiasm. Godspeed NorthWest!

Here is Buck’s obituary from the Seattle papers.

Price “Buck” Cochran

Born in Savannah, GA on Aug. 5, 1942, he was called home to heaven on Nov. 20, 2007. He attended the University of Georgia and was a proud supporter of the Bulldogs Football Team. He moved to Seattle in 1999 and started a walking tour named “Stroll Seattle” and also worked with the cruise ships. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and asked that memorials be sent to Trinity at 1200 Tenth Ave. East, Seattle, WA 98102. Price’s memorial service will be held on Dec. 16, 2007 at Trinity. We will hold our regular Worship Service at 10 AM followed by a Fellowship Reception at 11:15 and Price’s Memorial Service at noon.

Hey everybody - I just heard about Buck Cochron and did a google search that led me here. I had wondered what had happened to him. I knew him in Jax. I was not aware he had moved to Seattle, nor was I aware that he was a contributor here. I knew he was a UGA fan. What some of you may not know is that he was a pioneer in sports talk radio. He had a restaurant in downtown Jax about 1979 - 1980 I’m guessing. It was a sports bar/restaurant called The Pressbox (if memory serves correct) He did his sports talk show every afternoon from his restaurant and it was called “In The Pressbox.” I can still hear him saying “You are in the pressbox with Buck Cochran.” The whole concept was just a little before its time. Downtown Jax was absolutely deserted and empty after 5 pm in those days, talk radio was more or less in its infancy, his show was on a small all talk sunlight hours only station, WEXI (again, if memory serves correct), and all of this was before the concept of sports bars became popular, at least in Jacksonville. So the show, the restaurant, and even the radio station didn’t last long.

I think he later went into radio, either as an announcer or newsman on a more mainstream station. I recall him hosting a candidates debate in 1991. Buck got involved in politics and ran for the State Legislature in 1986, finishing 3rd in a 4 candidate Republican primary. That is sort of my last memory of him (although not the last time I saw or talked to him) He was leaving the vote counting at city hall after getting the losing results. He looked a little down in the dumps naturally, but he was being escorted down the hall by not one but two pretty good looking women who had their arms around him, and I did detect a wry smile there after all.

Sorry I had lost touch with him. We all went seperate ways. He was an interesting character and is surely missed. I’m glad he made it to the game, especially glad the Dogs won.
