UGAUGA

UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Dogs did what they had to do

That stiff breeze you may have felt in Atlanta was the collective gasp of relief let loose from Georgia’s sellout crowd at Sanford Stadium 65 miles to the East. The turnover prone Bulldogs got away with one here today, ladies and gentlemen, winning 24-13.

Georgia played much the same way it did last year in Lexington when it lost to the Wildcats. The Bulldogs had four turnovers, all of them of the ill-timed variety, and after spending the whole first half playing from behind, could never shake the Cats in the second half. But give Georgia credit. It overcame a lot of distractions to do what it needed to on this day.

There were several key differences in last year and this one, however.

  1. Kicker Brandon Coutu wasn’t injured this time. His 46-yard field goal with 2:09 gave the Dogs the breathing room they needed.

  2. Georgia has Knowshon Moreno this year. He became the first UGA tailback since some guy named Herschel Walker in 1982 to rush for more than 100 yards in five consecutive games. The freshman finished with 124 yards on 22 carries.

  3. The Dogs’ defense is better. They gave up three points in the final three quarters and made fourth-quarter stops this time, as opposed to letting the Cats drive the field like they did at the end of last year’s debacle.

But Kentucky had the Dogs worried the entire day and well they should have been with Andre Woodson under center for the Wildcats. The senior signalcaller didn’t have his typical game but his presence was a constant threat to the Bulldogs. None moreso than when UK trailed by eight points and took over deep in their own territory just under five minutes to play. Tight end Jacob Tamme was wide open in the middle of the field, three steps ahead of linebacker Rennie Curran, and Woodson’s pass was just out of his reach. Otherwise we might have been looking at overtime.

Here’s the most impressive stat of all: With the victory, Georgia has won 70 games in seven season under coach Mark Richt. He’s just the eighth coach in college football history to do that.

Now, let’s see how that Tennessee-Vandy game turns out.

Great win, ugly game! You have to win the ugly games to be a great team. 12:30 games can be tough. It’s not on national tv, its a big hangover off of the huge blackout Auburn game. The fans and bloggers said Georgia would have to start winning without gimmicks and they did today against a good Kentucky team, and they did it with 4 turnovers. Great defense and a great mix of T. Brown and Knowshown. Vandy is now up 24-9, 24 minutes left in the game…

That was a difficult win but we’ll gladly take it. Looked like UGA might run away with it in the 3rd, but KY didn’t go away quietly. Given the run the Dawgs have had starting with Vandy and the emotions of Senior Day, it’s not surprising they didn’t play their best today. But a great win nevertheless. GO DAWGS AND BEAT TECH!

And those of you who have “screamed” on here(bold type and all caps)to fire WM, I hope you saw the great game he coached today. Van Gorder couldn’t have done as good, much less, better. NASCARFAN you are one who should feast on crow tonight.

Great win over the guys that beat the number one team in the nation. The heck with worrying about the Dores and Vols. We now have to contend with the greatest mind in college football history, CHAN! He has lulled us into a false sense of security by beating the Heels in the last seconds. What a stroke of genuis. Not since Lex Luthor has there been such a diabolical mind. Move over SOS, CHAN is the MAN.

Dawgbyte… I eat no crow.

I decided to be against Martinez because of the inconsistant nature of the Bulldog defense under him.

And I maintain the defense is still inconsistant. The SoCarolina game. The Tennessee game. The Vandy game. Last year, too many games to remember. The year before that, the Auburn game, Florida game, the Sugar Bowl. I mean, the man had just about the exact same game plan against Tennessee the last two years, play zone, bring no pressure, and let Ainge pick us apart, both leading to humiliating losses.

Under Martinez, our defense has given up 30 or more points I believe 7 times. Under Van Gorder, they did so once.

Martinez started this game off as bad as he did the Tennessee games the last two years, bringing no pressure at all. It wasn’t until the second half that he started bringing pressure, which worked wonders the last three games, so why is he always seeming to be so reluctant to bring pressure using a linebacker or DB?

I believe the defense playing better this year has more to do with Mark Richt becoming a head coach who oversees the whole team as opposed to anything Martinez has done.

And I stand by that. The defense under Martinez is not as good, and will never be as good, as it was under Van Gorder. And the improvement this year has more to do with Richt than Martinez.

I’m not a hater of Martinez. I don’t hate him. I have no emotion in making my decision against him. Unlike your stupid @$$, I’m leaving emotion out of it.

You target me, instead of targeting what I had to say, because you can’t tear it down. Because I used dispassionate logic to make a case against Martinez. And you, being the complete and utter moron you are, are defenseless against the use of logic. What use does an idiot like yourself have for logic?

So you attack the messenger of the logic instead of trying to make your own logical argument.

If Tennessee play as badly as they did today (lucky win, BTW) then Kentucky will destroy them.

Excuse me if I won’t wish you hillbillies good luck next weekend.

Oh, and I’m not one of those Georgia fans who really cares all that much about winning the East if we already have a guaranteed berth in the sUGAr Bowl for going 10-2, so you won’t see me crying if Fat Phil saves his job.

Which, come to think of it, wouldn’t it be better if Fat Phil saves his job by winning the East this year? Y’all get humiliated by LSU and play in the Peach or Music Bowl, and we get to play whomever in the sUGAr Bowl.

I’d say it’s a win-win proposition for the Dawgs. And please, older Dawg fans, stop saying Phat Phil. It’s Fat Phil. When you spell fat with the ph, you’re actually implying that you like Fat Phil; that you think he’s cool. Trust me, the aliteration is not lost betwen an f and a ph. Plain and simple. Vandy is a team that just can’t stand their own prosperity. They’ll always be losers. They play just well enough to make games close, and steal one every now and then, like against UGA last year. But the bottom line is that they just don’t know how to consistently get the job done. Too many negative yardage plays on their last drive that cost them field position on that final field goal.

Tennessee might beat Kentucky … and then again they might not! Guess we’ll just have to wait another weekend to find out. I’ll say this though. The Vols didn’t especially impress me today and if they hadn’t had the refs and slow clock operator on their side this game may have had a different result. But the Tennessee home cooking probably didn’t affect the outcome as much as the Vandy coaching staff who seemed to just shut the playbook after they took a 24-9 lead. To their credit the Vols didn’t quit but they’ll have to put forth a better effort next week against a Kentucky team who will be out to best their own effort in Athens today. If the Vols win and take the SEC East I’ll be one of the first to say congratulations boys, you whipped our a* and deserve the honor. But if you slip up and lose I’ll still admit that you whipped us good but also add the team that laughs last laughs best. Can you boys up in Knoxville finish the drill? We’ll see next Saturday!

You know what I find humorous? There are so many UT fans in Atlanta… Why is that? Is it because they don’t have enough jobs for everyone of their graduates in middle management positions in Nashville? Or does Knoxville just graduate their students for learning their theme song “rocky flop?” It really does stink that they have beaten us so badly in the past two years - and they are so out for UGA these days, they just about pee in their pants whenever they get a chance to throw some mud our way. Wow. Get a real rivalry UT fans. UGA spanked you guys for so long that the recent spell of wins has you guys in a state of dementia. Hehehehe… I bet this post stirs up a frenzy of Erange lovers. If KY shows up next week at Lexington, and UT shows up… it will be a UGA trip to the ATL for a SEC Championship opportunity. A HOT 10-2 GA team would be the most attractive At-Large team and not to mention possibly the highest ranked non-division winner available. Plus, the Fiesta Bowl has already scouted GA during their win over Auburn. New Orleans has the NT game so they will pick for the Sugar after Fiesta and Orange.

“Here’s the most impressive stat of all: With the victory, Georgia has won 70 games in seven season under coach Mark Richt. He’s just the eighth coach in college football history to do that.”

Okay, Chip. Richt’s done well as Georgia’s coach, but that is a VERY DECEPTIVE comment.

You conveniently forgot to mention that most of those other coaches in college football history DID NOT HAVE 11-12 regular season football games and a championship game opportunity to boot. That is the same mistake sportswriters, analysts and fans make when comparing today’s players’ full-year statistics with players of the past. There are more games today in a season and that makes the comparison apples to oranges.

http://www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=4350267

This link will guide you through the EASY process of getting a brand new retail Playstation 3! Here is how it works!

First and foremost this is NOT like those other offers you see all over the web, where you are required to sign up for a million “free” offers that end up taking forever and costing you a bunch of money and a headache.

You click this link and sign up for their referral program. With this program you are required to participate in only ONE of their sponsor’s offers, I suggest the Stamps.com free trial, not only is it 100% free, but you also get $5 in free postage and the offer credits to your account instantly.

Once you sign up for your ONE required offer you use the link they provide you and post it on forums, or send it to friends, and if someone uses that link to sign up and complete one offer of their own, you get a referral. Here is the cost breakdown of the referral system.

8 Referrals = New retail 40gb PS3 10 Referrals = New retail 60gb PS3 14 Referrals = New retail 80gb Ps3 and two games YOU CHOSE (includes new releases like Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune or Ratchet and Clank Future etc…) Plus many more PS3 offers and others including up to $475 in CASH

I have been a member for 3 days and have 10 completed referrals on my account, well on my way to my chosen 14 (Already enough for a 60gb or 40gb PS3). I also have 250 people, who have signed up; if any 4 of them complete an offer I have my Ps3 and two games. It can take up to 3 days for a completed offer to process, so I may have already reached my goal.

The company even covers shipping and handling so there is no hidden costs of ANY KIND.

This website even has you create an account so you can track your progress the entire way through, and once your package ships, they supply a UPS tracking link. It is extremely user friendly

I recommend you research this company online, as they are proven legitimate and not in any way a scam. EGM magazine actually did a story on them 2 years ago to see if they were legit and did in fact get a free system… so they proved it worked!

The way it is possible is these sponsor’s pay this company money for referring people to them, and using a portion of that money, buy you a PS3 as an incentive for helping them advertise. It is a pretty nice scheme, but it results in me getting something for free so I don’t care.

This will be my third free thing to get from this company; I have a 360 elite and iPhone for the cost of ZERO dollars.

Enjoy your free system, free isn’t a bad deal for a great console and a Blu-Ray player!

Congrats to Tennessee for lucking out on a Vandy team that actually has a manual on ways to lose a ball game.

UK will beat you, not because you’re a bad team, but because UK plays well at home and besides Berry, you don’t have a playmaker against the pass. I just bought 4 tickets to the SEC championship game in full confidence that I’ll be watching the Dawgs give LSU a hell of a game.

And I know - UT handled us this year. You played great and we played like we were stuck in quicksand. Good for you.

National Championship my behind. The mythical NC is a joke and too often highly political. Auburn’s 13-0 season in ‘04 wasn’t good enough (think about it - an SEC team runs the table, and doesn’t even get a shot). Colorado won one year with a loss, a tie, and a bogus 5th down win over Missouri, mostly because they were the media darling that year. BYU won one year after going undefeated with a weak WAC schedule and beating a 4-loss Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl. Florida backed into its two championship games in ‘96 and ‘06 after stunning upsets of Nebraska and USC, respectively, and even then they had to rely on voter distaste for an OSU-Michigan rematch in ‘06.

Georgia’s 13-1 season in ‘02 was good enough to win the championship in over half the seasons, but even a 14-0 season wouldn’t have put them in the title game over Miami or OSU, who were also undefeated.

Just win the SEC. That’s the only thing teams in this conference have any control over anyway, unless they happen to be ranked 1 or 2 going into the season. If you’ve won the SEC, you know you did it on the field. I still like our chances to win the conference. We’ve learned to play defense and pound the ball, Tennessee has laid some eggs on the road this year, Kentucky is pretty good at home, and LSU is overrated.

You also have to wonder if Tennessee will have much left in the tank after today’s squeaker. The old nerves have to be a little frazzled at least, and Andre Woodson and the UK offense are hard on the nerves, especially in Lexington. Just ask this season’s media darling, LSU.

Tennesse has played only four road games so far this year. They are 1-3, with a 12-point win at Miss. State and a 14-point loss at Cal, a 39-point loss at Florida, and a 24-point loss at Alabama. In other words, their average result on the road this year is a 16-point loss.

Hey we had the chance, we lost in Knoxville, case closed. UT has every right to play for the SECC, if and when they beat Kentucky. If we wanted to be in control, well we should have won on that funky checkerboard.

That said, I am proud as I can be of the way the Dawgs have played in the last few games. Last years team would have lost to Kentucky today, but this is not last years team. Great for the seniors to go out with a win. Now lets prepare for the new evil genuis, the diabolical CHAN. He has us lulled into a false sense of security by losing to us everytime he has played us. Now he has us where he wants us, the dastardly foe.

Nascar, top off the tank, skip the tires and get off the net and speed off to the nearest bar. It is Saturday night in Athens after a win. Go to a bar and spend some time with a few dozen beautiful women instead of typing on a blawg with a bunch of old guys. Go out and procreate. The chicks are waiting.

You would think that Thomas Brown would know to carry the ball in the outside arm as a 5th year senior. When I was a back in h.s. if you did that in a game you were benched the rest of the game. If you did it in and second game you were benched 2 games. A third offense and you were off the team!

One other thing… does anybody else notice that when UT has a close game going on in Neyland Stadium, that the referees have some pivotal call that always…ALWAYS goes in favor of the Vols? I mean really, did you see the replay of the “roughing the kicker” call today that really turned the momentum to UT? Oh my gosh - it was no more roughing the kicker than Tim Tebow is a Heisman candidate! PLEASE! Will the SEC just take a look at the record of BAD calls made in favor of UT at Neyland? I mean really - we all know that Fat Phil is a cheater - proven cheater - and a baby at that - but how much evidence needs to be shown that the guy has so much pull within the SEC that he can get away with saving his own hyde by using “bad” officiating.

Hey, UT, you kicked our a*******es fair and square for the past two years granted - no whining about those two games from this Dawg fan - but I’ve seen at least three calls THIS YEAR in Neyland that even the TV announcers were questioning. Good luck next week against KY without the officials in your pocket…

And no, you can’t have a job. Go pick some corn.

Yellowblood, how does it feel to have the greatest mind in college football history as your head coach? It must be awesome. Win loss records, who cares? CHAN is beyond that. at first, i thought that UT would win out and we’d go to the sUGAr bowl. but, i was listening to the end of their game on the radio today and their idiotic announcers, and they are idiots, were giving UT’s stats for the year, they said that they ended the year undefeated at home. so, i was thinking, that means they lost all of their games on the road. therefore, i think woodson will have his way with that UT defense in lexington. Looks like I gots a fan/stalker/idiot. Autographs at 11…So, now that the Dawgs are hanging by the back door, will the Vols give them an opening..? Guess you unknowing of the Red and Black don’t seem to understand the game. You see, ya gotta beat the ones in front of you. You didn’t (UT) and you did(UF). BUT, the one that controls your destiny beat you. Isn’t that a riot..? Hard to accept..? Take a pill. Tell the UT D how Moreno ran all over them that fine Saturday in Knoxville…Cuz, I’m drowning here in stupidity created by the dumbmasses that don’t know Jack Schitt…Please Dawgs and Enemy Blawggers alike, keep Buck Cochran of the NW in your prayers tonight. Up here in North Georgia, we have a creature we call a Turkey Buzzard. He sits and waits for something to die before he eats. He doesn’t hunt it, or kill it, or invest time or energy in it’s destruction, he waits for something else to do the dirty work then claims his prize. Beginning to sound familar..? If the Vols lose next week, UGA gets to the Dome. Rah. Win or lose, I like the position of being the proactive hunter verses being a dam Turkey Buzzard in waiting for something to die and claim a prize…Go Vols…

As for us Dawgs, I hear there is already a run on the Raid at Home Depot and Lowes so please get there and get yours before it is all gone. A flyswatter will do as a replacement. Go Dawgs, and long live the FOC. God bless America and may God watch over Buck.

Hey guys, don’t forget about me. I used to be one hell of a ball coach. All this talk about Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, etc. just makes me sick. We still have a shot at 7-5 and a bowl sponsored by Poulan Weedeater or Budget Car.

Oh well, Nick Saban’s bunch just lost to the SouthCentral Louisiana State University Mudcats, who hadn’t won three games since Bobby Buchar graduated some years ago. Urban Meyer’s Gators just got eliminated from the SEC East race by Georgia of all people. Tough year for us “genuises.”

As a resident of Atlanta, but graduate of Tennessee and huge fan of football, I normally come to the AJC sports website to read stories and blogs. I do get a kick out of reading the Dawg fans’ assessments of games along with their omnipotent wishful thinking,’wait till next year’ refrain, not to mention the ‘woulda shoulda coulda’ argument from the most bitter fans.

I happened to be at the only SEC game that mattered today, and I’m always thankful for a win whether it’s tough or easy. To say that the officiating was in our favor is wrong, however. First, the roughing the kicker penalty would’ve been a first down even if it were running into the kicker since it was 4th down and 4 yards to go. Second, the official that called the phantom pass interference to give Vandy new life at the end was literally 25 yards away from the play while the side judge was facing the play less than 5 yards away and did not throw a flag. There are bad calls in every game, but blaming the officials for a loss is a cop-out (a common Dawg reaction I’ve noticed, by the way) when a game has over 110 plays and 60 minutes of action to determine a winner.

Don’t be surprised with a Tennessee victory next week. We tend to play better when everyone is counting us out (for example, verses your beloved Dawgs or the Hawgs of Arkansas). Same goes for the SECCG. Look at all the improbable upsets this season and tell me that a team with the talent that Tennessee has can’t win against LSU, even playing as the underdog.

Anyways, keep up the wishful thinking…Dawg fans should be used to it after wishing for a National Championship for 28 years. I, for one, will be in the Georgia Dome in two weeks, wearing the same color orange as the team on the field, celebrating as another top ranked team is upset this season.

Volgrad,

Let’s say that both UGA and UT win out. Who do you think would end up ranked higher? Would a 3-loss UT be more attractive than a 2-loss UGA to the BCS? Would the 20th-ranked Vols overtake the 9th-ranked Dawgs if neither loses?

I know who the SEC wheels are pulling for, sorry Gen Neyland. Congrats to you both for your convincing win (over us) in K-ville, but this Georgia team is not the same as the one who stumbled against you earlier. This young bunch has grown up in the last month.

And mediocrity? The Dawgs are ranked in the top ten at the end of the season for the 5th time in 6 years. UT has finished top ten once in that span. And I recall a certain orange SEC East team losing seven games just two years ago. OUCH!!!

By MadMerf

November 18, 2007 2:54 AM | Link to this

The bowl prospects are shaping up nicely. #1 LSU awaits the SECCG. Both #2 Oregon and #4 Oklahoma go down. #3 Kansas still plays #5 Missouri. The winner of that game plays a peeved Oklahoma squad. #6 West Virginia still plays a ranked UConn team and Pitt. #8 Arizona State plays #11 USC. #10 Virginia Tech awaits #17 BC in the ACCCG. Only #7 Ohio State, whose conference has no championship game, has completed it’s season.

What this means is that everything is still WIDE open! The way this season has played out anything is possible.

Maybe the Vol’s comeback over Vandy was a blessing in disguise. UT’s emotional win will sap the energy from them next week in Lexington. If Vandy won today, then the Dawgs would be less likely focussed on the task at hand (GT in ATL) than, say, LSU in two weeks. Nothing would be more disastrous than the Dawgs to fall flat on the flats!

Solid win today and all the pieces are falling into place. Go Dawgs!!!!!!

It’ll work out better this way. Had Vandy won, can you imagine the difficult job the staff would have had keeping this team focused on squashing the NATS? Now they can prepare all week for the real task at hand. Then of cource, UT still has to travel to Lexington. That’s the game I think everyone assumed was the best chance anyway.

By GT76 is Correct

November 18, 2007 8:11 AM | Link to this

GT76 as usual, nails it - almost. As Cuz points out Chan the evil genius has concocted a diabolical plot to lull UGA into complacency. On top of that, Tech held BOTH Duke and UNC to under 30 points!! Incredible. Furthermore, UGA will be looking ahead and I expect them to come out and play an uninspired game with numerous turnovers and lots of stupid penalties. Also, don’t think UGA will be able top fully contain Tech’s potent air attack. As a result I think the score will be much closer than it otherwise would be. I predict UGA to win 56-3.

I am amazed that the Maritinez debate has momentum after the effort this week. They shut down an NFL quarterback with reeivers that tower over our corners. Kentucky also has used a powerful running game all year. They average over 5 yards a carry. Remember what they did against LSU?

Think what you will, but the scheme this year was predicated by the lack of experience in the secondary and huge questions relating to a viable pass rush. The group is also undersized at corner, defensive end, safety and linebacker… You can’t play smash mouth if your strength is speed. Finally, some leadership on the field has emerged and that has given the coaches more freedom in allowing defensive adjustments at the line of scrimmage.

The fact is the defense carried a team whose offense was mediocre at best yesterday… and Stafford was terrible. He finished with 98 yards of passing and some horrible interceptions. If it were not for Maritinez and his players, Kentucky could have put the game away early and forced us to throw down the stretch on a day when our young Quarterback did not have it going.

Thanks Dawgbyte for the props for Willie and Nascarfan you have revealed your incompetence when it comes to unbiasedly observing and critiquing what takes place on the field. You pick out the games that UGA failed in which I am sure if we breakdown there are several opportunites that the O didn’t deliver or turnovers that placed our D at a disadvantage. You called for pressure on Woodson early. Why? so we can get man situations with four or five wideout sets and get toasted? I felt Martinez called his blitz’s at appropriate times but did the right thing and challenged his front four to put the pressure and they delivered. The D just held KY to their lowest output for the year and this done while our O gave them four turnovers!!! THE D GAVE UP THREE (3) POINTS off those tunrovers!!!!!!!!!!!! I will quote Matthew STafford, “It’s a bunch of guys believing in each other. We never once questioned what we were doing on offense or what we were doing on DEFENSE. We knew it was up to the players to get up there and make plays.” Nascar and the rest of you “fire Willie” posers how about taking off your blind biased glasses and appreciate the job this unit and team has done since the 10rC no show. BTW-Are y’all really serious about Muskrat as our D coordinator?!!!! By my count UGA has lit his D’s up like a pinball machine and this goes back to his last LSU year. Speaking of LSU I’m not afraid or impressed. Unlike you Nascar I like our chances, if we get it. Go Cats, beat UT.

By Lane

A couple of weeks ago Richt indicated “Stafford did well when not rushed”, yesterday proved that point with the interceptions. Stafford’s “cannon” will only take him so far.

Havercamp has left the team, official reason was lack of playing time. Rumor, was he was about to be suspended for alcohol infractions. We loose so many OL’s it is unbelieveable.

Ok, so Vol fans are hillbillies in trailer parks and UGA fans are lowly direct reports to higher paid Georgia Tech grads. Not sure with whats the deal with all the personal shots against other fans… we all have our rednecks.

As a UT grad, I can only bring up that we have beaten you all 3 out of the last 4 years so your little win streak from the early 2000s is a distant memory (much as our 10+ straight victories over you all prior to that are also long gone).

And the think about the UT grads working in Atlanta becasue they can’t find jobs? Lets not forget that about 3 quarters of metro Atlanta is the equivalent of a 3rd world country that youth groups from Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga have to come and help try to clean up.

Vols may or may not beat Ky. Smart Dawg fans will pull for the Vols so they can take a likely licking from LSU and the Dawgs can keep coasting to a solid BCS bowl bid.

Vol Fan, I am not sure how wise or reasonable involving youth groups in a “diss” session against Atlanta and Georgia is, but using your logic, I guess New York City and Chicago are the pits as well since lots of youth groups go there on mission trips too. Just to let you know, the last church I was a member of before moving to Atlanta took trips to places in Tennessee on mission trips as well. Memphis seems to be a place I remember them going to at least twice. Metro Atlanta has its bad parts just like Nashville does, oh and have you visited Memphis lately? But according to Forbes magazine, Atlanta is the 6th fastest growing city in the nation, and U.S. News and World Report names it second in the South in terms of best cities in which to live. We have almost reached the 6 million mark in terms of population. I have a question though. When did third world nations get mass transit, a rapidly increasing number of new subdivisions, and new retail and industry establishments almost monthly? If you are wondering where that is happening, check out all parts of metro Atlanta. I have to admit, I love Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville. Memphis is decent, but I don’t think you can make any of those cities any better by ridiculously trying to make Atlanta look bad. Come on man, everyone calls the ATL the capital of the South.

In terms of football, I don’t hold a grudge against Tennessee; they beat the snot out of us fair and square. And I even rooted for them against Cal. But you do have to admit, Tennessee next year is not as promising as UGA looks.

by gatoray to dawgoneit: you are correct about the last score in jax- enjoy the victory while it lasts-for a year only probably- your comment is fair and justified-about game results unlike those of some people who make derogatory remarks about young men playing the game to the best of their ability and for little remuneration. Their comments are often unfair, untrue, and uncalled for in my humble opinion. Of course this is a UGA blog and I seldom enter into it and your people can say anything they want to {and they do}.

Wel LSUfan, last I checked, no one was making you read this blog. Go away and we won’t miss you. My point is that we lost control of our destiny on the field in Knoxville. Now Tennessee is in control of it’s destiny. It will go to the SECC if it takes care of business. The pressure is not on the Dawgs. It is on the Vols. I expect the Vols to suck it up and win because they have something to play for, the SEC East title.

If we want a good BCS at large bid, we have to take care of business and beat the greatest mind in college football, CHAN. Who else would lull us into a false sense of security by purposely losing to Coach Richt every time. What a diabolical genuis, he lost those games just to prepare for when we would be looking past him. CHAN is the “New Evil Genuis”.

Anybody heard how many from Tech were named. I mean, all you ever hear from the Tech folks is how vastly superior their education is. Surely if UGA had two Tech must have had half a dozen or more, right?

Anybody know the actual number?

Let’s see: 3 losses in-a-row in the East (Vandy, UT, and UF), and 4-in-a-row in the conference (Ark). Once again, great timing on your part!

Dawgbyte, I encourage you to rethink your position. As a founding member of Fans of Chan I am contimually dismayed by Tech fans who do not understand Chan Gailey. They beat him up constantly when in fact Tech has been the most consistent college football program in history under Chan. Except for the aberration last year Tech has won seven games and gone to a bowl under Chan every year he has been there, and there is an excellent chance it will turn out that way this year too.

That type of record deserves support.

Pago Pago, I’ve lived in Baton Rouge right down Highland Road from TIger Stadium the past 25 years and there’s no way LSU would have Nick Satan back. LSU fans are the most insanely rabid I’ve ever encountered and they are unforgiving. The Dawgs are always first in this heart, but I enjoy LSU football. However, if you think UGA fans are ugly, those Cajuns are truly nasty when it comes to harassing out of town fans. On other subjects, UT, which has no better than a 50-50 chance to beat an irate Kentucky team, would be cut to shreds by LSU’s D; and, those fast LSU backs and receivers wouldn’t even wave as they run past the Vowels secondary. Final note: Texas Tech and Cincy looked pretty cool in their flashy black jerseys with red trim; but, the Dawgs black look is the class of the class.

Looks like I’ll take some crow to go with my turkey this Thursday. UGA really displayed that it is a team of championship caliber against KY. The defense rose to the occasion and was quite impressive against arguably the best offense it has faced this year. UGA overcame its t-o’s to still win in convincing fashion. Great job Willie. NASCARfan, I agree with you. After what I saw Saturday, Kentucky will beat Tennessee and they will make it look easy. Kentucky’s got 25 player on its team from the State of Georgia and Kentucky hates Tennessee. The Wildcats will be up for this game and Tennessee does not have the speed on defence to stop Kentucky’s offense.

Nascar Fan:

Once again I find myself agreeing with part of your post, but disagreeing with the balance.

VanGorder was the best D coordinator Georgia had in the last 25 years. Martinez is no Van Gorder. Van Gorder was probably the best defensive coordinator in the country, but he is gone.

Martinez the last two years hasn’t had quite the talent that VG did, but they are really starting to respond. This game was won by Martinez’ D, plain and simple.

Kentucky has a great offense and the Dawgs held them to 29 yard rushing on 29 carries! 13 point? That is an amazing peformance especially considering the O had four turnovers. The D saved us on Saturday.

I understand what frustrates you about Martinez’ defenses. Next year, the Dawgs are absolutely loaded on D. If we don’t have a dominant D in 08, I’ll be as critical of Martinez as you are. 13 points

To Gatoray, I guess I was a little harsh there. Honestly, Tebow is much deserving of the Heisman. I hope he wins it. For one, he is an SEC player, and anytime one of our boys down here in the SEC wins, it makes us all look good. Secondly, he is a really neat guy. I hear a lot of great things about him.

It looks like the LSU fans are getting trashy with it already, and we haven’t even won the east yet. LSUFAN, you call us trashy? What about the 900 plus voicemails that Tim Tebow got on his cell phones from rude, trashy LSU fans? Some were even threatening to hurt him and his mother at the game!!! Then, to add insult to injury, the students in the student section were yelling “Teabag Tebow!” For those of you who do not know what that means, lets just say it involves perverted things. Yeah, we UGA fans are a bunch of trashy rednecks, huh? It looks like there is no dirth of banalities in Baton Rouge this year. Sorry fellow UGA fans, if we have to play these guys in Atlanta, we can expect more of the same crap like this from the bayou.

To poman: So someone broke your headlights on your car last night in Atlanta because you had a UT license plate? Of course, it could have been just thugs who were out and about vandalizing, but you would assume that a UGA fan did that regardless. Perhaps you should think about that before outright blaming someone for something you aren’t sure they did. I would assume that you were more likely to have that done to your car by a UGA fan after the 35-14 whipping you guys gave us in October. As for throwing us all into oblivion: why the heck are you in Atlanta around all these UGA fans then? I am sure the UT fan base in Knoxville or Nashville would love to have your car, complete with UT license plate, parked in any of their subdivisions. Remember, I75 runs northbound too!

The spring draw play was huge!

That was a HUGE 3rd down we picked up with the sprint draw. KY was surprised by it because we haven’t run it 10 times a game.

It is so effective with an offense like ours as long as we don’t overuse it.

That was an awfully big first down!

If you look way up in the national rankings you will see UGA sitting at #6. You still have to get by KY to claim your 2nd SECG appearance of this century and if you play like you did at home to Vandy on the road AT KY… UGA will be going to it’s fourth. Has TN won a conference title in this century? Not yet!

You beat us fair and square at Neyland this year, but there hasn’t been much accomplished on Rocky Top since the new millenium. Talk about wait until next year!

Let’s say something crazy happens and UT gets to Atlanta and knocks off LSU, the big 12 teams knock each other off, and WVU loses another game. If UGA beats GT…then that would likely put Ohio St. #1 and UGA at #2. Soooo…would UGA not play in the NC game because they didn’t win the SEC?

Please, no smart a$$ remarks from dawg haters…I’m really curious to know how the system would work in that case.

What if: Arizona State would have to lose to either USC or Arizona, and of course, that is quite possible. There are about 6 things that have to happen for Georgia to get into the national title game. Here they are: 1. UGA must defeat TECH.(likely) 2. Either we or Tennessee have to knock off LSU in the dome.(unlikely) 3. Missouri has to knock off Kansas next Saturday. (probably will happen) 4. Oklahoma would then have to defeat Mizzou in the Big 12 championship game. (most likely will happen) 5. West Virginia would have to lose to Conn or Pitt in the next two weeks.(will never happen) 6. USC or Arizona would have to defeat Arizona State in the next two weeks.(USC players are salivating at the prospect of knocking off ASU, so this one will most likely happen) That would put Ohio State number 1 and UGA number 2. However, the possibility of all that happening is very remote. I feel that our guys should concentrate heavily on defeating Tech and getting a decent BCS bowl invitation, then trying to win it and round out the season in the top five.

My predication for the national title game will be LSU vs. West Virginia, and in that case I hope the Tigers destroy the Mountaineers.

A win is a win. The black out shows fans, even the older ones, how much fun games are when everyone yells and claps.Against UK,the crowd seemed louder than usual,-excluding the blackout-even 106 started to yell more[except me I always yell as loud as I can].I think UGA should do six things differently next year though to create a better home field advantage: 1]Give all students, who want tix, tix,and let them fill up each endzone, I think that would give all students the will to be really early to games also they could be LOUD.Do not cram students who pay tons of tuition money in the upper decks,at Alabama, I went to that game, the students filled a big area of the lower deck and they were very loud. [2]Keep the “It’s Saturday” thing, it is awesome, but bring back “I’m Georgia”-Ben Watson got me super crunk on the big screen! [3]Every away time-out,play review, and some commercial time-outs,the cheerleaders should start the GEORGIA—-BULLDAWGS stadium cheer.During away time-outs,this would distract the away team’s focus during the time-out,and get UGA some momentum. [3]I love the fourth quarter video, but instead of “Here comes the boom”, the PA should play “Who let the dogs out”.I think this would be crazy, the whole stadium could join in the barking parts of the song. [4]Crank the Soulja Boy at least twice during the games, even though next year the song’s popularity will not be as high, it will still get people crunk. [5]When the band plays before the game, the crowd should all join in the cheers,we all know them, so join in.The stadium did respond to the band pretty well the last two games, but next year, let’s up the response! [6]Fans should strive to make kick-off,and DAWG FANS SHOULD NEVER LEAVE EARLY!! These six things are fairly simple to do,and if UGA can do these six things, Between the Hedges can be up there with Death Valley at LSU.

J-KEEZA:

I agree with your observations about the crowd, band, etc. I went to the UK game Saturday (my only game this season) and the crowd had it’s really loud moments. But others tell me that the crowd was “electric” at the AU game. I noticed that the band was experimenting with a few new tunes - the one that comes to mind is the Led Zeppelin tune that UT’s band has been doing for years. I’m fine with that, but I hate some of the Redcoat Band’s regular tunes. There’s one that they started 3 or 4 years ago called “Dance di Bacchanal” that sounds to me like “Nanny Nanny Boo-Boo.” They only play it on defense. Who picked that tune? The Redcoats didn’t play that when I was a student. I personally think it would be really cool if the band could do a version of “Who Let the Dogs Out” and get the crowd into it.

On Saturday, they played “Crank That” once on a tv break, and later played another tune that had Knowshon grooving on the field. He needs to be careful because he might draw an unsportsmanlike penalty on himself.

I was an 9-4 predictor this year. I had no idea that Stacy Searles would turn three freshman and two seniors into the best O-Line I have seen here in years. I had no idea that a kid from New Jersey would turn around a stagnant running game and electrify the offense. I had no idea that an undersized freshman named Rennie would equally energize a heretofore plodding read and react defense. I had no idea that Mark Richt could rise another level on the greatness meter as a college coach. But all these did happen. Of course, UGA could still go 9-4, but let’s no go there.

I so totally agree with toemeetsleather that I think Tech should anticipate such a great victory and extend Chan the Man’s contract another five years right now, today. Why wait, right toe?

82DAWG, that explains it all. Just 2 weeks ago when you called this georgia defense the “worst performing defense in the History of the Program”, you didnt know about the freshman backup linebacker.

Since Tech is projected to go to the Emerald Bowl I checked out the Emerald Bowl’s official Website. It turns out that just two years ago Tech lost its “bowl game” at the Emerald Bowl. It turns out that Tech lost to the third best team in the Mountain West Conference. It turns out that Tech lost by 28 points to the third best team in the Mountain West Conference. It turns out that Tech lost by 28 points to the third best team in the Mountain West Conference whose quarterback was playing only his second game as a starter. I looked for attendance numbers on the Website but the Website failed to mention that fewer than 2,000 “fans” cared enough to go see the team play. Of course the team from two years ago had Calvin Johnson and the current team does not, so I expect performance and attendance will be off a little. Maybe being off probation this time will help Tech. Maybe not. Of course Tech will be without the services of alleged drug possessor Reuben Houston, WHO STARTED IN THE EMERALD BOWL in addition to being arrested for carrying a hundred pounds of pot. Surprisingly, only one of these two facts is listed on the alleged drug possessor’s bio on the Tech Website.

Georgia Tech’s official motto for 2007: Only two fewer Rhodes Scholars than UGA.

gator ray:

Tebow is a great player. How can Florida have lost 3 games already with all that talent?

I’d rather watch my dawgs in the fourth SEC title game in the last 7 years AND/OR A BCS Bowl and yet another top 10 or top 5 finish than watch one of my players win an individual award any day of the week.

Enjoy
