UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

History points toward Auburn victory

I’m working on a story this week on the Georgia-Auburn football series. In addition to being the oldest rivalry in the Deep South — been going on 115 years folks — it is also one of the most heartbreaking rivalries you will ever see.

By that I mean, whichever team has the most to lose in any given year usually does. Last year is a perfect example. The Tigers were cruising along, ranked No. 5 in the country, eyeing an SEC Championship and an outside shot at a national title and facing at home a Georgia team that had lost four of its last five games.

So what happens? Georgia thumps them 37-15.

That’s been the tendency over the years. Remember 1997, 1983, 1978, 1971, 1964, 1942? Certainly there have been exceptions. The 2002 and 2004 seasons immediately come to mind. But in the grand scheme of 110 games over 114 years heartbreak has been the overriding theme.

And that’s why this year’s game sets up perfectly for Auburn. At this point, Georgia has everything riding on this game. The Dogs HAVE to win to keep alive their SEC title hopes. The Tigers have possibilities of their own but not quite as much to lose.

I know there are some of you that have witnessed this game even more than I have. Am I crazy or does everything about this game point toward Auburn victory?

The one thing the dawgs have going for them in the Head Coach. He was in charge when the dogs won the Auburn game to clinch SEC Eastern title. That team had to come back and won that game in the 4th, don’t be suprised if it is a close game taht the dawgs win on the last drive.

the only way UGA can win this one is to play loose. With the obvious exception of FL game this year, UGA tends to play tight. Not sure why?

Chip, shhhhhh! You can’t say that out loud. Sure it does and we all know it does that’s why us dawg fans try to avoid bringing that up when thinking about the game this Saturday. Tough, tough defense to face this Saturday. Hope Bobo plans well. I think our defense will play well. Hopefully Cox will throw a few picks. Turnovers will be key, And playing the full 60 minutes. And remember to get off the field if we have a concussion.

No doubt about it. That ‘97 game was as painful a loss as i can ever remember. We were coming off that great win in Jax and got down 31-0 to AU in the first half!!!

I even think there was an early UT game(just like this year with Ark and UT at 12:30) that had some bearing on whether we went to ATL.

Truly a pick’em game.

Well Chip-a-roo, I think it comes down to the Dawg’s O. As of now, the cowbarn’s D is playing stout, but I think our D will be able to keep Cox and co. under control. We blitz Cox a few times and we knock and hurry him, he will be peeing his panties so much, he will look like Tinky-Winky Taylor did last Thurs vs VT. We need to establish the running game with the Jersey Boy, and run sime screens to “defend” the blitz. Then Stafford can do what he did last year. Make the sedcondary his red-headed step-child. They won’t need to offer free pizza, Big Boi, and coke to fill the stands this Sat.

Yep the Tigers could definatley break the dawgs hearts. I think they will becuase the defense is so good and everyone healthy for the first time all season. DON’T forget, Auburn will want revenge from last year’s loss to the dawgs too. Auburn wins this one.

Over the years, these two programs have had similar coaching, similar facilities, recruit the same players, and similar fan bases. Both schools are big time and attractive to students and recruits. The national TV cameras are regularly on campus. The overall record is so close in this series, you could flip a coin.

Tee it up boys-let’s play some football.

Nice article, does everything point to Auburn for a win? I would have said yes three weeks ago. Auburn played LSU off its feet, should won the game in Baton Rouge, Vandy, Florida were nice wins.. The Moreno arrival along with Stafford`s more play action offense, has made a different story. If Auburn contains Moreno as they did McFadden(47 yds) and Jones(27yads)at Ark., Auburn should win ball game. The advantage Auburn has over dawgs is defense while offense leans toward UGA. so maybe special teams will be difference, it will be a great game.Moreno has not seen a defense like Auburn, although we have only 3 seniors in the rotation.

Kalamazoo-come on buddy-jump back on the wagon. Hold out some hope that the D will show up like last year and we can overcome to home field jinx.

We can beat these guys. Missy State and South FL didn’t have any problem.

Cox can be rattled. He’s just like Reggie Ball-get to him and he’ll fold. Everyone is so in awe of the Auburn defense, and I think we have enough play calling ability to put them on their heels. Remember, Arkansas was one dimensional-we’ve got a lot more weapons.

Yep, unfortunately it is uga’s year to lose. But looking at the match up, I think Ga will prevail. The only big run team AU has played is Arkansas, but that could just have been a fluke and McFadden wasn’t at his best health (he was limited to 17 carries as opposed to the usual 25-30+). Secondly, Brandon Cox sucks. Third, Stafford’s passing game has looked great the past two games. Fourth, the defense has been making some great plays. Last and most important… KNOWSHON MORENO. Sorry Auburn, you will lose this one.

History?, Didn’t we celebrate penalty that away already?

What I remember about the 97’ game was sitting in the stands at halftime thinking, ok here’s what has to happen: we get it, score, holdem, score, turnover, score, holdem and then we are almost back in this thing. We didn’t, we never were. A couple of AU fans were almost appologetic back at the tailgate. They knew how it felt, from the years before. Damn thing is I believe AU had been shutout against Miss State the week before, and they had no chance that night.

I’m afraid the detail of the 42’ game are not quite as crisp in my mind.

In order to break this home field disadvantage, I think the Dogs should wear their road white jerseys for this home game. The Dogs have played their best this year wearing white, FL and AL for example(we can forget about TN). It would be a nice follow up to the Florida trick CMR pulled. How about all the fans wear white too and call it a white out?

Toss in the fact Aub. has a stingy D (Auburn leads the SEC and is ranked fifth in the nation this season in scoring defense (14.5) and is eighth nationally in total defense (293.8)), rarely gives up over 20 points (During Will Muschamp’s two seasons as defensive coordinator, Auburn has held 19 of its 23 opponents to 20 points or less), and gobbles up the run (Auburn has held four of its last five opponents to single digits for the first time since 1988), then yes many things do point to an Tiger win. But that’s why they play the game. Last time I checked, Auburn wasn’t the only team playing Saturday nigh that gives out scholarships. What we will find out is if the O line is made up of pups or Dawgs.

Looking at ‘02, ‘03, ‘04 and even ‘05 and it would look like the heartbreak tendency had changed. After last year it may be back to the same thing. So, in the face of logic, knowing the history of the series, having watched it closely for nearly 30 years, I would feel a lot better about Saturdays game had I no knowledge of last year. But then again I was probably thinking the same thing in ‘02. Who knows…it’ll be a great game!

Chip, based on what you wrote. I don’t see this as an automatic Tiger victory. Two years ago we had a player put his “I want to play over the good of the team” and last year we burst their bubble because they underestimated Matthew Stafford and boy did they pay the price. They have and outstanding defense but as the Reptiles and then the Trojans found out, with this Ga. offense you get to pick your poison. That’s really a no brainier. They’ll try to break Staffords rhythm, maybe put a spie on him, CTT learned his lesson in ‘06.

Yeah it will be tough fought. It always is. The ky is what War Eagle mentioned, can a team that shut down the SEC’s 2 leading rushers stop Moreno. If thats the case its a long day in Athens if not the rushing attack will hide Staffords inability to be a high % completition QB.

Auburn DOES NOT have enough Offense to win this game

You can’t judge Georgia’s “D” on the Fla and Troy games b/c they play a gimmick spread offense that Auburn cannot play! Auburn’s offense WILL LOOK SLOW in comparison to those two!

Georgia will be fired up, especially if TENN loses earlier in the day!

Moreno, play action, and pressure on Cox gets it done…DAWGS WIN A CLOSE ONE 27-17

The game this coming Saturday should be a very intense battle. Coach Tommy T. and DC Will Muschamp will have the Tigers ready to prove that they will be able to notch another victory Between the Hedge’s. I feel confident that the Auburn Tigers will come away with the Victory in a hard fought spirited game. RB Moreno is an excellent player for the Dawgs but can carry Uga only so far. The QB Stafford is a good QB but not great and has only good receivers to compliment him as well. The offensive line seems to be improving but still lacks cohesiveness. QB and Receiver play just hasn’t lived up to its expectations but is good at times. The Tigers should be able to keep Uga in check in those two areas. Uga’s defense is an area in which has been plagued with problems of inconsistency. The defensive schemes Uga employs is suspect by players not being disciplined and not being well coached. Auburn exposed these problems two years ago in Athens and was able to win that game in the wainning moments. Teams were able to follow suit as did WVU, Vandy, Kentucky,Tenn, and SC. Even in some of UGA’s win’s , teams were able to take advantage of uga’s inconsistency during the past three years. Granted the dawgs are a well coached but are a little overrated. Uga will have problems with their up coming game with Kentucky as well, because the Wildcats match up very well with the dawgs simply because of the defensive issues. IMO Uga isn’t a top 10 team but a good team. Coach Tommy T simply prepares for away games better than CMR who BTW does an excellent job himself. This game should be another competitive classic with the Tigers prevailing. I know Dawg nation is very excited as all of us in War Eagle nation. Everything points to an Auburn win…so Georgia will probably end up blowing them out by three TD’s. Okay, maybe not, but while I’m a big believer in trends in college football, this is the year where you throw out conventional wisdom. We had won 22 of our last 25 true road games before our trip to Tennessee. We had won three in a row on Rocky Top and the road team had won 5 of 6 in the series. Everything pointed to a Georgia win. Then we go down there and get stomped 35-14.

Auburn will win.

No doubts. UGA fans will be crying ” if so and so just had made that block/field goal/1st down we would have won ”

I have always thought we should try the white jerseys when we play Auburn in Athens. However, I think mcdawg is correct about the NCAA rules. Tech used to wear white at home too, but changed a few years ago and now LSU is only Div I school authorized to do so.

Maybe we could a banner up proclaiming it Jordan-Hare Stadium. Then again, maybe we should just man up for what will surely be a slobberknocker.

Yeah, that’s right dawgies… Brandon Cox “sucks”.

In three years as a starting QB in the SEC, he’s won 27 games (thus far)… but he “sucks”.

On fourth down late in the game between the hedges two years ago, he hit a strike to Devin Aromashodu that put the nail in the dawgie coffin… but he “sucks”.

His record against eastern SEC opponents is UGA (1-1), UF (2-0), South Carolina (2-0), Kentucky (1-0), Vandy (1-0), against the west Bama (2-0), LSU (1-2… the two losses in Baton Rouge), Arky (2-1), Miss St (2-1), Ole Miss (3-0). Winning records against every SEC opponent except LSU and UGa (with this year being the tie-breaker)… but he “sucks”.

My hope is that word gets to your boys on defense about just how much ol’ Brandon “sucks”. I remember another game back in 1999 when an Auburn squad came in with a QB that every UGa fan just KNEW “sucked”… his name was Ben Leard. And he lit up UGa like a Christmas tree. Sanford Stadium was half-empty by the 3rd quarter.

Just keep on repeating it to yourself. Maybe by gametime both you and your boys on the field will actually believe it.

Tville Dawg said “We can beat these guys. Missy State and South FL didn’t have any problem.”

Actually, both State and USF needed 5 giveaways from Auburn to win and both used their last score to take the lead for their win (USF on the very last play of the game in OT). Auburn was also missing multiple starters due to injury in both those games including stud linebacker Tray Blackmon.

Fact is, AU is a much different and much better team now than it was back in early September. Assume otherwise, and you’ll be crying in your beer saturday evening.

Regarding JimDog85’s idea for UGA to wear white at home; it would have been a great idea, except the home team has to make that decision before the season starts. It’s too late now, and in addition to the road-field advantage normally enjoyed in this series, the Tigers have won their last 15 games playing in all-white uniforms.

I hate to be the Ga fan that keeps bringing up the GA/Fl game but I saw something in that game I haven’t seen from Ga in a long time, confidence to win the big game. I think AU is a great team but I also think GA is clicking offensively on all cyliders and has the confidence they need to win. Am I wrong? Tough call. I agree all signs point to an Auburn victory (but I don’t believe in signs, so those things don’t really mean a lot to me).

Looking at the two teams, it’s Auburn’s stout D versus Georgia’s better O, and Georgia’s good-but-not-great D versus Auburn’s mediocre O. In games like these, turnovers and special teams win the day. I have no idea how it will turn out, but it will be close. Ultimately, it will come down to who makes the big play when.

Here’s hoping it’s the Dawgs!

I am glad to report that the Sanford Stadium expansion project will be on schedule as the home football season comes to a close. Soon after the Kentucky game the expansion will begin immediately at a cost of 11.9 million dollars. All proceeds have been set aside by the athletic department and shouldn’t effect ticket prices in the near future. The need for expansion will be evident particularly after both games with Auburn and Kentucky. The expansion plan consists of widening the aisles for easy exit of disgusted and disappointed Dawg Fan’s. A need for this project was also justified because of Sanford Stadium being the loudest stadium in college football, particularly midway in the third quarter with the slamming of car doors. Any donatations for this project will be gladly accepted. John Finkelstien Stadium Project Manager

We’ve improved, they’ve improved, two teams peaking at the same time in the season. We’re going to see some real SEC football this Saturday. The reason why these games are so tough is because it’s like fighting with your own kuz. Our advantage is the fastest defense we’ve had in many years. We need another six-pack sack-attack.

Cause you know Auburn’s going to be keying on Moreno, another advantage could be a big if. IF we pick up a pair of fresh legs in the backfield. We’ll probably know something about that after we read how practice is going… Chip.

With 2 minutes left in the game, Auburn had the ball on their own 45, and Harvard had the ball slapped out of his hand, and this guy recovered the fumble. This same “guy”subsequently caught the winning touchdown pass with 8 seconds left on the clock. That made the score 13-13. Who caught the winning pass from Tarkenton, who also recovered the fumble. Also who kicked the winning extra point?

This will be a difficult game and a pickem contest. It could be a blowout for either side, but it could also be a triple overtime game.

Obviously, a Georgia win will be huge because I believe TN will lose one of their 3 remaining SEC contests. I’m just glad it is November and UGA is vying for another top 10 finish and SEC championsip game appearance.

Auburn is always a physical team (except for last year when some of their players quit). My biggest concern is… can that young and improving OL handle the physical nature of Auburn’s play?

Florida had such a weak D that it is hard to evaluate the OL in that one and Troy is the same situation. We could run or pass at will on those two defenses. Auburn will be much tougher defensively.

Just how far has our OL come? We will find out Saturday night, but that is the part that scares the heck out of me about this game.

None of the other stuff about home field, uniforms, stats… matter. Two evenly matched teams.

If the running game is shut down… UGA can certainly be successful through the air, unlike AR. I hope that proves to be the big difference.

What changed between the NY Yankees and Red sox ?? Curt Schilling came along with a big pair of balls and common sense.A championship caliber program shouldn’t carry an astrology chart around to tell it when it’s turn has come. They should step on the field every game prepared, with the expectation of winning.Sorry Chip but who gives a fat rats a* who won in 78.I say f** who’s turn it is,we have more talent and home field, we should win.

To those who say Brandon Cox sucks, etc must have forgotten his game winning pass the last time AU played betwixt the hedges. We had better receivers then but Cox can make plays when necessary. If UGA gets a big lead like last year we’re toast, but I don’t expect such a let-down again, particularly on a road trip.

Jake, I played in that game, it was Jim Herring who caught the ball from Fran. It was a tough Sunday practice on the Plains, Coach Jordan was UPSET, typical UGA-Auburn game. MURPHY,Moreno has added attraction to this game with his Carnell Williams style(same jersy #24). UGA has advantage offensively and Auburn defensively.SPECIAL TEAMS, COACHING, PENALTIES, TURNOVERS..one of these could be the factor for the win.. Nice to hear from you…

Pardon the tangent, but did anyone else see Coach Spurrier go off on his kicker and the assistant coach that tried to intervene last Saturday. What a total jerk.

McDawg, I am certain I have never seen Hegel referenced in a football blog before — Like we need more hegelian dialectic here.

UGA and Auburn have both played hot and cold this year. I wonder if the “home team loses” gets into the players’ heads. I bet both teams get beat up, and I hope we spend this week working on north-south passing for distance because Auburn has a good fast defense and they will surely play stop the run and blitz on defense.

In all the years of following Georgia football (about 45) this is the one rivalry that has truly been a consistently intense rivalry. It is their oldest as well as most evenly matched series. And the penchant for the underdog to win has also made it compelling. It never occured to me that it could just be the jersey. JimDog makes a good point. Lets try the road jerseys to shake things up. (Is it allowed? Does Auburn have to agree?) It can’t hurt and as far as I know, there’s no sportsmanship penalty involved.

Jake, I knew it started with a “H”, my name dialogue is slow at times. It was like 90 degree that day, I believe UGA concession sold a record high Coca Cola`s. I was talking to Bryant Bryant at the Auburn-Vandy game(1957 NC Reunion), about how seconds can cost a team SEC championship. It was a terrible lost for Auburn. Do you know Bill Herron? I talk to Fran Tarkenton about 8 years ago and he remembers the day well. Pat Dye, Don Leeburn are two notable who played in that game. Of course Coach Dooley was on Auburn side lines, never realizing he would be a history making coach on the other side..

By Cuz

I have consulted the stars, voodoo queens and my ex-wife’s second cousin who said that he once met Fran Tarkenton. The overall conclusion is Dawgs win in an upset.

Why not break another hex and win in Sanford. If ever the time was right this is it.

Auburn has revenge in it’s corner. But we are looking for the positive, not the negative. Knowshon brings a passion to the game that is infectious. I hope they never find a cure. With his attitude, the fire in the belly, we cannot lose. If we play sixty minutes of football, we cannot lose. Sure there will be a fumble or an interception, but if we stay focused, we beat the jinx and take it to our Cousins from the Plain.

Brandon Cox is not a QB I take lightly. But he is not playing that spread option that gives us fits. Coach Willie will be ready. Our defense will take up the banner and play with all their heart.

I say we win, by how much I do not know, could be a point or three or by a larger margin. I just feel as I did the UF game that it was time for a change.

It is going to be a great game, must see TV if you cannot be there. Health issues will keep me on the couch once again.

My opinion and everyone has one.

You cannot compare Georgia to Arkansas. We actually have a quarterback and a recieving corps. Go ahead and concentrate on the run, the recievers have discovered they can catch and when the do, it is off to the races. Mikey, MoMass and Sean have a big game. Greeting AU and UGA Fans,

Now this is a series two great schools can be proud of.

UGA - I love how our offense is starting to jell. Stafford is playing under control and leading the team. Knowshon is running, WRs are catching, OL is maturing.

Defense is also jelling with good safety play. DL coming along, LB’ and CB’s seem to be improving.

I feel good about UGA’s improvement and focus…..That is why I am picking AU to win!!!! This series is so quirky.

For those that bash Cox - he broke our hearts two years ago when he hit the WR in our two deep zone. The kid takes a beating and never quits…an excellent leader.

AU’s defense is ahead of UGA’s - and that will be the difference.

Best of luck Dawgs…lets see if we can change the history of this series.

The morons who keep perpetrating the rumors about Coach T going to A&M are probably wishful bamers. Tommy is not leaving Auburn. There is more talent in our bottom three classes than anywhere else except maybe USC. As far as the game… You can’t count Auburn out in big games. That is when we are at our best. Combo that with Auburn being an underdog and wanting payback and finally our team is all healthy…
This game always makes me nervous but I am confident. War Eagle! Burn the Bulldogs!

Tubberville is a class guy he represent our University with class we are loaded with talent he has a buyout of 6 million dollars and for anyone to pay that and then turn around and pay more than what hes making at Auburn with the talent we have bs. At auburn we recuit AL,FL GA, TN MS LA he has an awesome place geographically to recruit its a coaches dream to be able to be able to draw from such tallented areas .Wishful thinking and just like clockwork bammers trying to do anything they can to try and distract from our 2 rival games of the year its pathetic but predictable behavior by Alabama media .

Pay close attention to what the fans are saying before the game as they are usually an accurate bellwether for what the team is thinking heading into this game. The more confident the fans are, the more overconfident the team tends to be, and the more likely the Dawgs lose. Conversely, if the fans are nervous about the game, Georgia usually is very motivated, plays very well and wins. I remember with bitterness the ‘97 game in Athens. I was hopeful for a victory, but ever mindful of the history of the series I was very concerned. That concern turned into dread the more I heard, “Oh yeah! We’ll handle Auburn!” from so may Georgia fans before the game. Even took a couple of nice cigars with me for a victory smoke afterward with my buddy. Unfortunately, one @$$-kicking by Auburn later, there I was giving away my cigars to some deserving Auburn fans. My friend was ticked at me for doing so, but as I explained to him, since those cigars were meant for a Georgia victory, after watching Auburn spank them with that diminutive white guy at running back, well, those cigars may as well have been soaking in urine for all I cared. At least some nice Auburn folk got to enjoy them. And Auburn has plenty of nice folk in their ranks. I probably would have thrown the cigars away were it any other team we had lost to, but Auburn kind of feels like family. Family you can’t stand sometimes, but family you love nonetheless, and it’s always easier to love them AFTER YOU BEAT THEIR ASSES!!!

I can say I did finally get to enjoy a post-game victory smoke in Athens in 2003; still have the ticket stub from that one. That was also the last time before a Georgia-Auburn game in Athens I actually felt good about the game going in.

We shall see. GO DAWGS!!!

I usually go into this game with a bad gut feeling but I really feel good about this one. I don’t see Auburn’s offense getting a whole lot done against Georgia. I know this is not one of the Dawgs greatest defenses but I see them blitzing the heck out of Cox and beating him up real good like last year against Auburn and this year against Florida. I see Georgia scoring at least 31. The offense has come together just as expected now that the offensive line has come around. Moreno and Stafford have proven to be dangerous weapons with a seasoned offensive line. The defense will force Cox into some mistakes and the Dawgs will win 31 to 17. Go Dawgs!

i haven’t read through this whole thread, so forgive me if someone mentioned this. the uga senior football players asked coach richt to send a request to the bulldog nation. they want the fans to do a blackout game. i know a lot of you are probably against that because red tops and silver britches is tradition. but this request comes from the team, not the general student body. so dawg fans, if you’re coming to the game, wear black just this once. the players want it and if it fired them up, i’d wear tie dye.

On another note… who out there agrees with my wild idea that we go recruit us some more Red & Black coaches back to Athens. Specifically, I’d love to see Will Muschamp back on the UGA sidelines in place of Willie… Talk about bringing some pride back to our defense! That man can put the junk back in our JunkYard Dawgs! Forget history…Auburn’s defense scares the he11 out of me…limiting UF to 3 pts in first 3 quarters and holding Arkansas to under 100 yds rushing.

I can see this being similar in style to the SC game earlier this season. The Dawgs may be frustrated at times on offense…especially in the red zone. However, the Dawgs offense is running much smoother these days and I expect that one or two of those FGs they kicked in the SC game will be TDs instead giving the Dawgs 20 pts instead of 12.

If Dawgs win, it will be something on the order of 20-16 and I’ll be surprised if they score more than 27 pts on Auburn.

Defensively, they must get some pressure on Cox! As strong as the Tigers defense is…after facing tough spread offenses of UF and Troy…expect Tigers offense will seem relatively weak and the Dawgs may get stingy in yards allowed department.

Against Auburn, UGA absolutely cannot afford to come out flat like they have in most of the games this season…that will be the early key. If they come out flat offensively and get behind by 10 or 14 pts in the first half…it will be a long day.

  3. Cox lights up Sanford with 231 Yards, no INT and 3 TD’s.

The big surprise of the game: Because of Auburn’s huge effort to sack and pressure Stafford, he will pull a tebow and run for some crucial 1st downs gaining 70-100 yds rushing. Will it be enough?

I think Knowshon will be held to a little less than 100 yds, so it will depend on Stafford being accurate with his passes, which he has problems with.

I look for another classic match-up won by a late field goal or even another 3-4 overtime runs.

History also said that FL would be UGA this year…..and as for schools in AL “owning” UGA? Hmmm, last two times UGA nas played AL, how has it turned out. Oh yeah, UGA won. Last year, UGA dominated Auburn at home. Year before that Auburn did win, but it came down to the wire….someone needs to figure out what “owns” means. I smell a victory.

Phillip, Well, none to be correct. Then again we won a National Championship with our undefeated season. And last time I checked, an unbeaten SEC Champion counted no more than a one or two loss SEC Champion. That column is still 12-6 in the Dawg’s corner.

Bulldawg I Lickit Jr-It’s absurd to think CMR would even consider the ND position. First of all, polling the fan base, where could one find the love. Second, the stamp of approval would probably have to come from Lou Holtz who would veto anything DAWG related. Third of all, the worm is turning-ND now has its own NBC network, airing all its nationally embarrassing games. The DAWGS also appear regularly on national TV and represent themselves well. We may not be regarded as a national program, but we certainly have exposure. CMR can build himself as a legend at UGA.

Reply to Philip Sturgis:

You said that two years ago, Auburn exposed the GA secondary with the 4 and forever pass completion to set up the winning score. Well, what really happened was Tra Battle got whacked so hard he ended up with a concussion and didn’t know his own name. He was the one supposed to cover that middle route but was in la la land. Coulda, woulda, shoulda but if GA had recognized this and called timeout, GA probably wins that game.

I dont understand all the AU comments about auburn being a better team..Im sure there are reasons why Auburn is ranked 18th and UGA 10th. Troy has better athletes on offense than Auburn and a better scheme. I promise you that. The only way AU can win this one is with defensive turnovers that lead directly to points for them. If they get that they can win, otherwise AU wont score enough to win. UGA has the better offense and the better special teams, which will be a huge factor in this one. It will be a fourth quarter victory for either side, not a blow out this year like last year. Redemption and Cox wanting to make amends for last year dont guarantee anything for Auburn. The QB with the confidence right now is Stafford.

GloryGlory,

I have never seen anything that would lead me to believe that Chris Fowler hates UGA. In fact, I think he and Herbstreit kind of like the Dawgs, unlike Corso. The only guy who really seems to have a grudge against UGA is Lou Holtz. Then again, looking at his record against Richt we should not be too surprised by that.

By Jack

Both teams have the talent & determination to win. I feel good about UGA’s chances, although I felt the same way about the TN game. Basically it boils down to which UGA team shows up. If it is the one against Florida then UGA victory. If it is the one against TN, SC & Vandy then Auburn wins.

I am anxious to see if T. Brown returns for this game. The Moreno & Brown combination could make for a long day for AU.

Auburn’s defense is awesome against a one sided attack. Yes they have had injuries on their mediocre offense but the defense has kept them in the game. The Dawgs has forged a pretty solid offensive attack in the air and on the ground in the last few games. I agree with others on this game it’s going to come down to turnovers and special teams as it appears they are pretty even. Auburn hasn’t played a balanced offense as UGA since USF and Georgia hasn’t played a defense as good as Auburn all year.

I don’t think Auburn has the kahonahs to score many points. If the Dawgs put up 3 plus TD’s we win. Anything less and Auburn beats us. We’re evenly matched on different sides of the ball.

History be dammed, doesn’t mean a thing. Preparation and the best team wins.

Instead the idiots coaching at ugay redshirted Moreno last year, benched him for half of this year, and who knows about next year. If this was last year, or the year before, or the year before…..then history would play into this. As it is, it means absolutly nothing. The only way history would play into something like this would be as a motivating factor, such as UGA knocking auburn from the conference last year. Of course, the Dawgs have something at stake this year, so that is voided. It’s ridiculous to hear about “well, last year” or “the year before last” or any other history comment. A prime example is the florida history. Sure, they won plenty during the last 17 years but who really cares as far as the games go? All that matters is as far back as the current senior class, in which we are currently at 2-2. Heck, I could go back to the fanny whipping we’ve put on the lizards throughout history, but no one brings that up. Why? Because it isn’t relevant to this year. Let’s tee it up and get on with the present. That’s all that matters this year.

History would’ve said the Gators would win again in Jax a few weeks ago, should I say recent history, last 10 yrs.

History are those Riddell, polyester coaching shorts, “nutters” that coaches wore in the 70’s and 80’s are thank goodness out! Except for Ron Zook, I think he was wearing a pair a few seasons back when he ran to the wrong bench in Jax.

History is astro turf in the 80’s at Florida field, that was cool history. Those awful, bright orange and blue colors, with the astro turf background and Gators griping, that was cool history.

By Two Things

November 6, 2007 1:09 PM | Link to this

Two things … 1) Regarding Pac-10 vs. SEC … I’m a lifelong SEC fan but they don’t have it this year. It is a tough league, but with no dominant teams it equates to a non-dominant league. The SEC hasn’t dominated anyone significant outside of its conference (And, no, VaTech is not significant). Oregon is the best team in the country right now on both sides of the football and has played one of the toughest complete non-conference schedules of any school in the nation.

2) History obviously has no impact on this bunch of Bulldogs. With three losses, Auburn is still overrated. All this gnashing of teeth is ridiculous. The Dawgs will win going away as Auburn hasn’t faced an offense with all the tools at every position that’s clicking.

Gone is the Florida run in the series with the Dawgs. And by Saturday night, the history of not beating both Florida AND Auburn since 1982 will be gone … And somewhere (probably Roswell) Roswell Ed will be forcing down a plate of crow.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Auburn is if not the best, one of the best coached teams in the country. While I would certainly put Richt, Searls and Gardner among the best - we lack very badly at DC and wr coach. Auburn does a better job than just about anyone in the country taking raw talent and turning it into SEC caliber talent. Our wr coach takes 4 and 5 star kids and by the time they leave, they belong at Georgia Southern. I love WM as a secondary coach, what he did with Minter, Jennings, Blue, Davis, Oliver and others was exceptional. I would love to have him back in the secondary full time. He is very talented in that roll. As a DC, he just is a not a great gameplanner. As far as the game, it comes down to these things, which young offensive line plays better, can uga hold Auburn to 21-24 points, can KM have another 150 yd type outing, can the defense get a couple turnovers, if three of four of these happen UGA wins.

Last year we were able to stretch the Auburn defense by hitting some long passes early. Look for the Dawgs to do that again. Also, we’ll counter the blitz with screens to Special K Moreno and watch him fly. Our offense is hitting on all cylinders now so if Auburn stops us they’ll deserve to win.

I like our chances on defense too. Auburn better not get behind early like they did last year. Dawgs will be charging with their ears pinned back and smack Cox into the turf.

Crowd will be loud and Dawgs are actually playing for SEC Championship. Auburn is looking at another Peach Bowl birth.

If T. Brown is out or not effective, I’d like to see Southerland get a couple of carries. I’m not talking about limiting Moreno, he will get his 25 or so in this game (if we have any success running the ball, which is not a given).

War Eagle, glad you are doing as well as can be. Keep fighting the good fight. What’s to say LSU doesn’t have another “off day” in them. They have been cutting it close here of late. I contribute that to having to play in the SEC week in and week out. However, all of the penalties show a lack of concentration. I do agree, and have thought it all year long, that they are the best team in the country. The reason they have won is just sheer determination. KY was a bad call by Miles. One of several he has made this year, but the only one that didn’t work.

I am fearful of AU’s running attack with Brad Lester. I am NOT fearful of Brandon Cox. UGA needs to load up against the run and get the kind of pressure on Cox that we got on Tebow. He will crumble just like last year on The Plains if we do. In 05 we were beaten because of soft zone coverage and Kenny Irons. NOT COX!! If the UGA defense that showed up in the UF game, Bama game, and Ok St game comes to Sanford Stadium we win. If the soft D that went to Knoxville shows up we lose. UGA can score with Moreno and Co., but they may not have the ball enough to take advantage of their offensive balance. I believe we will play with fire…UGA 21 AU 20.

I actually agree with most of what you say. However, LSU hasn’t shown a balanced offensive attack all year. What I’ve seen of them anyway. LSU has been the epitome of good ole fashion SEC smash mouth football. They have had a semblence of a passing game. They did play poorly against Bama but not Kentucky. Kentucky played over their heads. I personally believe LSU to be the best team in the country despite being under coached. I thought your boys were going to beat LSU and I hoped that they would. Doucet and Hester had they’re way in that game. Miles isn’t the “riverboat gambler” the media is calling him. Doucet and Hester isn’t much of a gamble in my mind. They are that good.

Anyway War Eagle you are a good blogger and fun to banter with. Good luck to you and your team but I hope they lose

I agree jdawg, we have to bring the pressure on Cox. I really don’t understand why we don’t blitz more. We have the athletes in the secondary to play man to man. I’m sure I’ll catch hell for saying we can play man to man but think about it. We have a lot of speed in the secondary. In my opinion, a lot of the problems in the passing game have come from playing zone and being 10-15 yards off the line of scrimmage. Auburn has a young offensive line, just like we do, and I believe we can take advantage of it by mixing up our blitzes.

Hope I am completely wrong, but the problem is this: Watch out for the road underdog. In the past 23 years, the underdog has won 10 times, including 7 of the past 11 games. Auburn’s overall record in Sanford Stadium is 18-9 record while Georgia has a 13-9-2 record on the road at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

One thing you fail to realize Chip is that, although Georgia is higher ranked right now, it’s Auburn not Georgia that actually controls it’s own destiny to make the SEC Championship. If Auburn wins out, they’ll win the SEC West because they still have to play LSU & Alabama. They actually have more, or at least as much, to lose than UGA who needs help to win the SEC East.

Hey Dawgs, you are reading a blogger who hopes UGA wins every game except AU. This is best blog on the net with very little BS and ego. I have picked every game correct on UGA, like the loses to SC and Tenn, so my pick this week will be later. thanks for nice comments zoo and crs, where you been? UGA moved up to #2 in recruiting behind Notre Dame??

Another recent trend in this series, at least in this decade, is back-to-back victories. Auburn won in 2000 (home) and ‘01 (away). Georgia won in ‘02 (away) and ‘03 (home), and Auburn won in ‘04 (home) and ‘05 (away). Georgia won in ‘06 (away), so if recent history holds, they should win again at home in ‘07.

There is no homefield jinx. The team that outplays the other while minimizing costly mistakes will win on Saturday. What the series history shows is that the chance for each team is about 50-50, regardless of the venue.

If Dawgs want to win, they better get a big lead going. If Auburn gets the ball with 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter and needs a score to win, Martinez will play soft zone defense and let the Tigers slowly move down the field. (See Vanderbilt 2006 or Kentucky 2006.)

Villa Rica Wildcats Dawg,There is no circumstanmces in UGS-Auburn football. Forget 2004, 2005, 2006 even 1995. Different strokes from different studs. Auburn had Campbell, UGA got Stafford, Auburn had Caddy, UGA got Special K, so . Auburn will be introducing a young crop of offensive and defensive players who have several nicknames as “Little Ball of Hate”, Trey Blackmon(LaGrange),leading tackler, Josh Thompson,(Statesboro) Bluto, he beheaded Popeye. Auburn leading SEC in scoring defense.Brad Lester(Parkview) Lighting, he hits the holes like electricity

Johny Danger,

That is what scares me too. Auburn having the ball last. Actually, if there are 3 minutes left, we might have 45 seconds to get a last 2nd field goal. I don’t want them having the ball with LESS than 3 minutes left.

I think I would actually go for it on 4th and 2 from Auburn 45 yard line, if there were 2 minutes to go and we had a 3 point lead.

All signs point toward an AU win in Athens, but then that’s why they play the games.

Whoever said we need to play loose is dead-on. We’ve got to come out and have fun and open up the attack. That is the only way Knowshon won’t fall to the same fate as McFadden & Jones against the War Plainsmen. On D we’ve got to put as much pressure on Cox as we did on Tebow. It will be another nail masher.

Unfortunately, our defense will not stop Auburn. Our Offense will score some in this game and if the D can hold Auburn to under 20 points we will have a chance to win. I just don’t see our D stopping them much at all. Please prove me wrong, DAWGS!! Go out there and be tough and perform solid tackling. The defensive backs have to get off their blocks and make something happen. Our offense is starting to come around but they can not do it all, especially against Auburn’s defense. Our D must make a game of it or we are toast.
