UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

‘85 Georgia-Florida memories still vivid

Let’s talk about favorite memories from the Georgia-Florida game today. Or maybe not just favorite memories, but just memories period.

I’ve been coming to this game off-and-on since 1985. I’d have to say that first experience was the most poignant one for me and for a lot of reasons.

To start with, that was the first real road game I ever covered as a “sports reporter.” I use quotation marks there because I was still a student at the University of Georgia and working for the student newspaper, The Red and Black. Harry Montevideo, who remains general manager of the R&B, allotted another writer, a photographer and myself a whopping $25 apiece a day for lodging and meals. I can’t remember the name of the place we ended up staying but I remember it was a motel, had one floor and wasn’t anywhere near The Landing.

Anyway, Georgia was 6-1-1 going into that game and nobody was giving the Dogs much of a chance that day, myself included. Florida was undefeated, ranked No. 1 and led by quarterback Kerwin Bell, wide receiver Ricky Nattiel and running back Neal Anderson who had torched the Bulldogs the previous season.

Two things I remember vividly: The way the crowd was divided into quarters back then — or was it eighths — so it was blue-and-orange, then red-and-black and so on. And the smell of liquor. The Gator Bowl smelled like a giant sniffer of bourbon.

Well as everybody knows by now, a couple of freshmen named Keith Henderson and Tim Worley ripped off long TD runs — 76 and 89 yards respectively — and an until-then-little-known defensive end named Greg “Muddy” Waters made life miserable for Bell and company and Georgia won 24-3. That, of course, touched off a wild celebration by Dogs’ fans and I recall them jumping the fences and running onto the field to actually rip up Gator Bowl turf with their bare hands. Suffice it to say the whole experience left a lasting impression on me.

For you younger folks, that was the way it was back then. Everybody wondered what Georgia was going to do to break the Gators’ hearts every year. Times have changed a little I’d say.

That’s enough about my memories. Let’s hear about yours. What’s your favorite recollection of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party? What about your worst? What’s the best place for Dogs’ fans to gather? What are some cool things to do?

My favorite will always be Lindsey Scott’s 99 yard run in 1980. Every Georgia fan new the game should be over before that play, but somehow never gave up hope we could pull it out. Hershel Walker may have been the greatest bulldog ever, but that day in Jacksonville, Belue and Scott were the heroes. What a play!

Too young to remember, but 1980 is the obvious choice…As far as personal favorite I would either go with the 1985 game, 1997 when I decided not to go at the last minute or 2004 when I acually got to see Georgia win against Florida in person for the only time to date.

A couple of losing games:

One of the best blocks ever was a downfield block thrown by Frank Harvey(?) on a Garrison Hearst 80 yard td run in the second half of the ‘92 game…the year we somehow lost to UT and Fla by three points total as our only two losses and we seemed to have a better team.

1993? when Zeier threw that TD pass only to have it called back because Florida was given a timeout call was a great game. For a split second it was great when Munson said Zeier back in the rain and mud he’s got a man TOUCHDOWN!! and then thought of the two point conversion for the win…but it was not to be.

Go Dawgs! We still believe.

One of the best was the 1983 game I believe, with night falling on the Gator Bowl, the Dogs trailing 9-3 in the fourth quarter. We get the ball on our own 1 tard line. 99 yards to go for the TD. Somehow I remenber all of us knew, we just KNEW, the Dogs would drive down, score and break the Gators heart. They did and the Dogs hang on for a 10-9 win. Ahhh, those were the days when the Dogs were the Dogs. Dooley would gave them ready to play the Gators. And yes the 1985 game was a great one. The Gators were ranked for one week, until they played UGA.

1980- I was six and at the game with my dad, mom and brother. I don’t need to go into details but that was the day I became a DAWG for life.

2004- Also a great memory. We stayed in Amelia. Went out Friday and saw this chick named Reggie Blue that sang like Janis and ripped on the guitar like Stevie Ray. On top of that the dogs won and it was just a memorable weekend.

I was at that game too Chip. As a matter of fact, that was the only time I ventured down to Jacksonville, I don’t remember much, but one thing I do remember was throwing my drink in the face of an extremely obnoxious male Gator fan due to his bad behavior during an after party in one of the Jacksonville clubs. Honestly, I have yet to meet a Gator fan that wasn’t obnoxious, I hate to say that, I am sure they are out there, but I have yet to meet them. That’s why I never root for Florida, even when they are representing the SEC. I will root for most of the other teams, but not Florida and the fans are the reason why.

Ah 85’, my senior year. Was a beautiful day in JVille. what I remember most about teh game was that out offensive line lead by center (Wheeler?) absolutely blew Fl up. Can you beleive the best way to get booze into the Gator Bowl used to be just pour it into an open container and walk right in.

The huge upset in Spurrier’s Heisman trophy year, Appleby to Washington, Goff (the quarterback, not the coach) leading a comeback after trailing by 2 touchdowns at the half to win by 27 points, the 10 to 9 game already mentioned in 1983, and of course “Lindsey Scott” in 1980 are favorites that come to mind.

1982…I was a sophomore and it was my first GA FL game. We won 44-zip! It was awesome. The fans were sitting in opposite corners of the stadium and by the beginning of the 4th quarter all the gator fans were gone. It looked like all the Dawg fans stuck around till the very end. Those were the days! Time to bring ‘em back! Go Dawgs!

Don’t remember the year I was so young. But the end around pass from Appleby to Washington was awesome. It really made a big impression on this young lad. Didn’t realize it but reality check says that was Spurriers Heisman year. Hmmm that makes it even that much sweeter.

There are so many memories. The game used to be secondary to the real action, as I recall total domination for most of the 80’s. My most vivid, to use the word loosely, was sharing a hotel room a few blocks from that crappy stadium, no less than 12 to a room. Three in each bed and 6 on the floor. I also recall the pre-landing years and the party was at the Bennigan’s. We rented a Winnie one year and used it as our mobile hotel in the parking lot of Bennigan’s after the game.

La Jolla Dawg——I also attended the ‘85 Florida-Georgia game. The Dawgs were spoilers in that game (and others over the years), and that is among the reasons I will never tire of watching the Gators score another touchdown in Jacksonville. Back in the day, even when the Dawgs were mediocre and the Gators were in the top 10, the Dawgs would find a way to pull out the win on the field, and I have personally witnessed Dawgs fans taunting crying Gator women. I would suggest to you that there has been plenty of obnoxiousness on both sides of the Florida-Georgia line. I recognize that disappointment has run deep in both fan bases across these winning streaks, but if your fans want to be treated with respect, then they have to be willing to behave in a similar fashion toward other fans, including Gators, and that includes policing your own when you know they are over the line.

Good luck in Jacksonville.

Go Gators!

I’m showing my age a little her, & I agree the Applebee to Washington was my 1st real experience with a classic Larry Munson call.

I believe it was 1978, the infamous “4th & dumb” call when FL led 24-0 & went for 4th & 1 around midfield late in the 1st half. GA stopped the drive & scored a quick TD before half, then absolutely dominated the 2nd half winning 42-24.

That was back in the good old days, when we routinely beat FL like a drum, most years with FL having superior talent.

We were in their heads just like they’re in our heads now.

Actually, Jack, the Appleby to Washington pass was about 10 years later than Spurrier’s Heisman year. Sorry ro mislead. Those were two different games, and both of them highly satisfying.

In the “Spurrier game” they had beaten us the year before and he hasn’t just come by his arrogance recently. But in his Heisman year we beat him like a rented mule. The game was never in doubt and he spent plenty of quality time on the ground after being repeatedly sacked.

The Appleby to Washington game was very different. In that game Florida took what looked like a comfortable lead then the dawgs started coming back. We ran the ball almost exclusively back then - maybe two or three passes a game. We made the score close late in the fourth quarter and were still running the ball. Appleby was running a flanker reverse then pulled up and passed for the go ahead touchdown. It was one of the most stunning plays I ever saw.

1984 was my first GA-FL game. A bunch of use in Creswell, male and female, loaded up in a van - people, ice chests of drink, trash can from the dorm, and a roll of toilet paper (just in case). We must have left Thursday afternoon and drove down. Someone on our floor had a relative who was a teacher in the Jacksonville city schools. The kids wore their UGA or UF shirts to school. The teacher said it really was 50-50. After winning for so many years UGA lost in 1984 - we painted “What do you do when you lose?” on the back windows of the van. I think we were so depressed that we played Putt Putt in Jacksonville. The next year in 1985 I decided not to go (my have been a financial decision) but I told a grad student from California that I was sure, definitely sure, UGA would win even though FL at No. 1 was obviously favored. Two things I remember from the 1985 game: (i) painted on a window of a car next to Creswell Hall was “No. 1 for a week — Oooh I’m impressed”, and (ii) one of the players said “Balance has been restored to nature”.

In 1987 I was in grad school at UGA and was too busy to go. We actually had Sataurday classes from 8 to 1:00 (no joke). After class we had an exam we had to study for the next week. I skipped out on several occassions and watched the game. After UGA won I headed the Chapel Bell and let it rip. Some campus visitors were clueless as to why I was doing it - “We beat Florida”.

I know we lost but ‘93 sticks in my mind. Chip - It seems Terrance Moore’s artcile about excuses was a shot at your piece about the Bye weeks, how do you feel about that. I think the bye week is very important and we should be able to see if that indeed really matters this week.

Hopefully the off week was used to study film and find a set rotation of guys to play. Make Tebow fumble like we did last year. Hit him hard and hit him late, a late hit penalty early in the game isn’t alwasy a bad thing and sometimes pumps up the D. I love what Washington said and I hope the D plays with that mentality. Keep Bailey and MoMass in the game that way we can develope some timing and a rythm. Don’t pull the redshirt off King, look how that year helped Moreno and hurt Brown and Danny Ware at the RB position, and other players like AJ Bryant, Brandon Miller, CJ Byrd, and Durham. Let Stafford make some plays, unlike yall I loved the fact we let him throw it down the field against Vandy it spread out the D and gave other teams something to Think about. If we do use the short passing game then we might as well spread it out go 5 wide and get rid of it quick. Let Rashad Jones play a majority of the game, he is always around the ball. Secretly root for Carolina to beat Tennessee, the Cocks still have Florida while UT only has Vandy and Kentucky. Go Dawgs hopefully the coaches give you the best chance to win and don’t listen to a majority of the people on here who tell you how bad you are.

My fondest memory was being on the sideline as a freshman in 1974 when we beat them 17-16 and I almost got into the game. That was a real up and down year for the Dawgs. I hurt my knee the following week in our JV game and didn’t get to make the trip to Auburn. I did get to play in the South Carolina and Ole Miss routes of 52-14 and 49-0 respectively though.

But as a fan the 1980 game stands out in my mind because we could have folded but we didn’t and found a way to win on the Belue to Scott TD pass.

Atlanta Gator, I am in no way suggesting that UGA fans are not obnoxious, I am just saying that in my opinion, based on my interactions, the Florida fans are the worst. I live in the San Diego area and the UF alumni here are horrible too. The San Diego UGA alumni group has watched various games with other SEC almuni groups—UT, LSU to name a few, and the group from UF was the only one we won’t watch with again.

Again, I am sure there are Georgia fans who are bad sports, pouty and rude, but that has not been my experience, I am only commenting on my experience. The comments made on these blogs are proof enough that there are obnoxious fans on both sides. For example, I cannot believe that grown ups insist on using the terms: Gaytor or UGAY.

There is a lot going on in San Diego right now, and much of it is not good, but our alumni group is still planning on getting together to root for our dawgs!!!! Let’s all try to remember to keep things in perspective. Sorry if I sound like a mom, but I am one, so what do you expect?

La Jolla Dawg——I have seen more than my share of obnoxious behavior from SEC football fans over the years, my fellow Gator fans included, and not enough Southern graciousness from anyone. Most fans, Gator, Dawg and otherwise, blame the other side and excuse their own. Personally, I have been treated with kindness and courtesy as a visiting fan in Atlanta, Auburn, Knoxville, Tuscaloosa, and even Tallahassee, and I do my best to reciprocate. Having lived in Atlanta for years, maybe I’m more sensitive to to the bad behavior than most. My advice, which has worked quite well for me: kill’em with kindness. It’s a gentle form of shaming that works very, very well.

Okay, I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but my best Jacksonville memories were in 1980 as a UGA freshman and 2004 with my new husband.

Now 1980 was a true student experience…I won a ticket in the lottery, but only decided to go down at the last minute. My friends didn’t have any room in their car, so they found me a ride with a classmate of theirs that I got acquainted with on the 6-hour ride down I-95. We never really went to sleep that Friday night, and it was a good thing because there were about 8 people crammed in our no-name hotel room, at least that was what I only ever saw their luggage. The game was tight and I chewed about every fingernail I had down to the quick. Then, at the last possible moment..LINDSAY SCOTT! LINDSAY SCOTT! LINDSAY SCOTT! I remembered jumping up and down in the arms of perfect strangers while standing on top of my bleacher seat. THE PURE UNADULTERATED JOY OF IT!

In 2004, I got it into my head that I had to go to Jacksonville because this was gonna be the year. I just knew we were going to win and I became obsessed with making the trip. So I paid an ungodly amount of money for two tickets on Ebay and we flew down Friday night after work. We arrived in town and drove straight to The Landing, arriving just before midnight, late but we still got to party for a couple of hours before checking into our hotel. The next day we parked at The Landing hours before the game so we could soak up the atmosphere. After walking around around shopping, eating and drinking my husband, who is a UVA grad, paid me the ultimate compliment by saying, “This isn’t like anything I’ve ever seen before. Rival fans joking with each other, liquor so cheap you almost feel guilty about it and everyone with smiles on their faces. It really is the ‘World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party’.” The game was great…WE WON, just as I knew we would! We sat in the South End Zone with a great group of students who stayed on their feet the entire game. Then we adjourned to The Landing and danced the night away. My husband said he’d never had a better time at a football game. Well except for when UVA beat Florida State in 1990.

1982 was my freshman year at UGA. I had never known that the GA/FL game was held in Jacksonville because I had just moved to Atlanta from New Jersey. I remember sitting in the north end zone watching Herschel Walker running right at us. A message on the scoreboard said Walker was the first back ever to rush for more than 200 yards against the Gators - and it was still the 2nd quarter!!! We won 44-0 and I was officially baptized as a Bulldog. I live here in Jax now and I have not missed a game since ‘97.

1) Watching Elec”Tron” Jackson scoring 2 td’s in the second half of the ‘82 game after Herschel was pulled in a game that UF was never in. 44-0.

2) Emmitt Smith going 0-3 and never getting 100 on the UGA D.

BTW: While we’ve been getting beat we’ve always scored. We’ve also gone 12-0. UF hasn’t, but they have gone 0-11.

I have fond memories of the Belue to Scott touchdown pass and run also! Watched it on TV. I was so young and naive. After that game my best friend and I decided we would drive out to New Orleans and get tickets there. Surely there would be some available right? We wound up listening to Munson call the game on the way back home. Don’t know how we were able to pick up the Georgia Radio Network all the way back to South Georgia but we did. It was the best road trip of my life.

My favorite memory is from the 1989 game, a year before Spurrier came. Before the flood. We won that game as we had won 9 out of the previous 11 but my favorite sequence was on a pair of punt returns just before halftime. The Gator returner hauled in the punt just as Audell Grace knocked him senseless. He was flagged by Al Ford’s crew (imagine that) for not allowing the returner enough room to catch it. So Joey Hester blasted another punt sky-high and Grace leveled the guy again. Only this time he stumbled back a few yards before taking a fall as a host of Bulldogs were about to finish him off. Bryant Gantt couldn’t stop in time so Ford’s crew slapped him with a personal foul only to have Florida take a knee to finish off the half. We need to take that same attitude into Jacksonville on Saturday and hit Tebow and any other Gator in sight then line up and do it again and again and again.

Man, there are some very confused people on here. Appleby-to-Washington during Spurrier’s Heisman year?! LMAO!

The worst memory is the 1992 game when the best team in the SEC that year (sorry Bama) was out-coached for the second time that season and blew a game that basically was the beginning of the end for Ray Goff. The one and only UGA-UF game I attended in Jax. I still find it hard to believe we couldn’t find a play to get Hearst into the open for a pass where he could out-run Monte Grow, the designated player (by Spurrier) who tormented Hearst all day shadowing him and simply put, cost him the Heisman (which he would have won).

I have to wonder about some of you.

In 92 it was Harvey who MADE the long run, he wasn’t blocking.

In 80 it was a 91 yard pass completion to LS, not a 99 yard run.

Appleby to Washington was like 9 years after Spurrier won the Heisman.

Chip, I agree. ‘85 was an amazing game considering we had tied Vandy the game before ( if memory serves, Vandy had missed a chippy FG as time expired to beat us. The next day Vandy called the game thier greatest victory in school history ). According to everyone we didn’t stand a chance against the #1 gators. We came into that game and kicked thier teeth in. It wasn’t even close. It was an unbelievable feeling seeing Kerwin and the crew shaking thier head in disbelief as two true freshman (Worley & Henderson) destroyed them all day. I was a true freshman on that team and it started a great streak for us to finish the decade. I always remind people of the ‘85 game when the gators are heavily favored (the spurrier teams notwithstanding). We have a talented team this year that should compete, if a couple of breaks come our way, anything can happen.

chattanooga dawg,

I apologize for the inaccuracy on the long run in ‘92. It has been 15 years and unfortunately because it was done so in a losing effort I can never find a clip of that run. I will trust your memory over mine on that one. If it was Harvey with the run, who laid the block?

Chuck UGA, you couldn’t be more right about ‘92, just a frustrating year considering the talent. Had a chance to beat UT at the end after Hastings’ catch, but then he fumbled. At least we beat Herbstreit in the Bowl game that year although it probably shouldn’t have been as close as a touchdown game (21-14). If I remember correctly we looked like the better all around team and ended up slugging it out, luckily John Cooper was on the other sideline.

Richard I think you are a little confused as to the year because we beat the Gators 49-7 in 1971, we also beat them 10-7 in 1972 and barely lost to them in 1973 10-11, we also lost in 1970 17-24.

There are so many memories … Bobby Etter’s (UGA kicker) touchdown run with a bad snap in (I think) ‘63; the ‘66 game (Spurrier’s Heisman year and my 1st game in person) when Lynn Hughes, Bill Stanfill, George Patton and the entire Dawg defense gave the gators a rough time. With Georgia wearing their red jerseys and Florida wearing their blue on that green grass and the GatorBowl bathed is a bright sunshine I think that was the most beaufiful game I have ever witnessed; the ‘67 game when my wife (before we were even engaged) jumped up and cheered, in the middle of a UGA section of fans, when Florida kicked the winning fieldgoal at the end of the game. She wasn’t a UF fan or even a UGA fan. She was cheering for the kicker, a guy named Wayne Barfield, who she went to high school with in Albany GA; the ‘68 game (51-0) in the driving rain; the ‘75 game and the Appleby to Washington pass play; the ‘76 game and the comeback from 14 down at the half to win big; of course, the ‘80 game (and “the play”) leading to the NC; With the “off week” maybe we have set a trap for the gators this week. I hope so.

Well…… my favorite games were 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2006.

The Run Lindsay Run game was so long ago that I doubt Lindsay can still run anymore!

The 2007 version is Jump Linday Jump (as in Lindsay playing checkers at the old folks home)

My wife and I were married on Georgia/Florida day in 2003… we hadn’t planned it that way, but it was the only available weekend November 1, 2003, the Gators go on to break our hearts on a last-minute field goal: 16-13. My Dad mentioned the battle cry we’ve come to know all to well, “We’ll get ‘em next year.” He passed away 5 months later but his words rang true in October of ‘04 when Pollack and Greene gave us all a much needed win over UF. I was in North Carolina watching that game on tv and remember just crying on the phone with my Mom… saying how Dad was right, we got ‘em next year. Why does this silly game do that to people?!

Dumon, you may recall another frogger, that I ran into a few years back down in Jville, Kersmacky, from Sav. Had not seen him since the mid 80’s and just bumped into him at the game. gave me his card and he now handles all my insurance. So, its a fun time AND a business right off.

General - I’ll haul it anyway! Me and my buddy “Snowman” (along with his trusty dog Flash) will run it. Don’t worry about that Buford T. Justice guy, I’ll keep him busy. You need any clam chowder while I’m at it?

Oh and General - You did such a good job on the Trailer that I won’t need it pressure washed for a good while. Instead I should wager that Cuz trim of the frayed hems on ALL of my jean shorts. I keep thinking that a spider is crawling on my knees.

  1. I was in my final year of grad school at UGA, my wife was two weeks away from giving birth to our first child, and she walks into the living room to see me kneeling on the floor, weeping into my hands. She asks me what’s wrong, and I look up to her and say, “We’re going to win the football game.”

I did not see David Greene kneel. I only heard Larry Munson call it. Having gone into that season picked by some to win the National Championship, the only thing that could have salvaged it was a win over Florida. And we got it.

Gosh! That was the one and only Ga-FL game that I ever went to. I was a sophmore at Ga. It was awesome. The only thing that would have been better was if Fl was not on probation that year. Then the loss would have hurt them that much more!

You forgot to mention “Le Sack”. Richard Tardits. Waters got freed up some cause they keyed on Tardits.
