UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

SEC upsets giving Dogs a chance

Don’t look now but Georgia is not out of this thing yet.

As is becoming increasingly evident with every passing Saturday the SEC is anybody’s to take this season, particularly in the East where the Bulldogs hang out.

As I’m sure most of you couch potatoes have already seen, South Carolina lost to Vanderbilt 17-6 today — what do you think of the Commodores now, Steve Spurrier? — and Tennessee went down in flames against Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The Dogs could not have asked for a better scenario.

Well, actually they could. Though ultimately the outcome won’t have much to do with them, Georgia would just as soon have Florida go ahead and beat Kentucky today (the Gators have scored 14 unanswered points to go ahead 14-7 in the second quarter at this writing). That would put Georgia, Florida and South Carolina in a three-way tie for the Eastern Division lead at 3-2.

Georgia would control its own destiny with Florida and Kentucky ahead on the schedule and needs some help with the Vols and South Carolina, which has the head-to-head on the Dogs. The Gamecocks are likely to lose again, either at Tennessee, at Arkansas or against Florida. UT needs to lose again against either the Gamecocks, Arkansas or Vanderbilt, all of whom they play in Knoxville, or at Kentucky in the season finale on Nov. 24.

Obviously a lot still has to happen and, ultimately, it all comes down to Georgia winning out the rest of this season. That’s remains quite the long shot if you ask me. Except for Troy, the Bulldogs might not be a favorite in another game the rest of the year. But the point is, after this weekend, everything is still possible Georgia. That’s one heck of a positive note to kick off the week. And as we’ve all seen this year, crazy things happen.

What do y’all think? Any way the Bulldogs pull this off?

Well, well, well…..it does set up the rest of the year for some drama.

I am doubtful that the young pups can go 3-0 against Fla, Ky, and Auburn, but, as we have already seen….anything can happen.

I normally don’t participate in this kind of stuff, but I have to wonder whether Ole Stevie will have his quote after the GA win shoved up his arse. I think it was something like “well, it not like they were some big, powerful team…..Vandy beat em last year”.
Congratulations, Mr. Wonderful….would you like some fries with your order of humility.

The lesson in all of this for me as a fan is that my team isn’t as good as I think they are nor as bad as thier critics say they are.

Go Dawgs.

What a day for college football and the SEC! I hope that SOS can now back off UGA a bit… he has now lost to Vandy! All I can say is thank you ‘Dores. You are now my second favorite team!!!!!!!! What a way to kick the old ball coach in the mouth!!!!!! Big Time!!!!

So this goes out to all of those who were calling for the job of CMR claiming that the Dawgs are a team of under-talented, underachievers. Georgia has two loses this season; this week the teams that gave Georgia those two loses lost to team that have been beaten by Georgia. What does this prove? The SEC is, without a question, the most competitive conference in the country. This further stands to illustrate the utter stupidity of many of the comments about the state of Georgia football.

Finally! The Dogs are the cream of the SEC and will begin to work their way to the top. As everyone knows we are an extremely young team. We’ve played three F and RF offensive linemen. (One of our seniors has been more offensive to prove the point). We knew we would be getting better each and every week as we got experience and it’s beginning to show. Look how Vandy (that we manhandled) beat USC, generally regarded as the best.

Consider our young QB. If it wasn’t for dropped passes he would be the leader for the Heisman. I heard on this blog that 8 passes between the numbers were dropped against Vandy. If we hadn’t dropped passes against USC and Tenn we would be #1 right now and pulling away. We have the best backup QB in the SEC according to CMR and we don’t even need to use him! That is a testament to the play of our starter. The backup threw a perfect TD pass in mop-up against OM and we had to take him out so we wouldn’t look like we were running up the score. He won that game last year against CU and we don’t even need him! Besides our starter and the media might develop some insecurity if we take away snaps.

Our young defense is beginning to play over their heads. We had Vandy all the way after those excellent halftime adjustments. We could have stripped that ball away at any time last week, but just chose to wait to see what would happen. Coutu deserved that moment. The defense tried to get it for him against Ala but he just missed.

Now we have everything just where we want it. We will take care of business next week in Jax. no matter who wins today. The way we are playing with our youth is downright scary for the rest of the SEC.

And are the rest of you keeping up with recruiting? We are getting all the ones we want and will continue to reload in the coming years.

Go Dogs!

While it’s not very likely, it’s a hell of a lot better than not having a chance at all. Remember, as long as we’re not mathematically eliminated yet, we still have a shot.

But they would have to concentrate at an immense level, and most importantly, take it one game at a time. I think Florida’s the toughest game for obvious reasons, but remember 1997, when we were a 20 point underdog, and then finally went down there and beat THEM by 20 points? Most glorious game ever. I had a date that night, and was late for it because I refused to get ready and just kept rewatching the highlights on ESPN over and over.

Mr. Karma, I’d like to introduce you to Coach Spurrier!! Ha! Good for Vandy!

I don’t know that Georgia will be able to capitalize on the loses today, but for today, I am happy. If we can’t win the East, I would rather see Kentucky win it, or even Tennessee, but definitely not Florida. The only downside to today’s games (at least as I type this) is that Florida is back in the hunt.

I love optimism my good man (go dogs)

I would love to see CMR and his team come out smokin,swinging,gunning….. for Urban Wiener’s nuts and Teblow’s helmet!!!!!!!!

Lets get our assistants coaching like they belong in big time college programs instead of highschool schemes and preparation. I have seen all too much of this woefull underpreparedness this and last season.

If we come out preped/coached etc….aka Alabama/Ok St. games we have a chance against the Gators.

AS for winning out I am a true realist when it comes to UGA and football. I was there for the Ray Goff era. These last two years have truly rubed that old 90’s feeling back in. I challenge the entire team/staff to bring the fire and passion back to this football team like it was in 2002,2003,2005 and for the last 4 games in 2006!!! If so, we have a doggone fighting chance to build on something this year and move forward into 2008 with wins over UF/Aub/oh yeah UK now too! (praying for this honestly)

Will the offensive minds release Stafford to run and throw deep (accurately) in JAx?? Will Willie become a reborn BLITZ defensive guy against UF? and look like Alabama did in 1991 with 10 defensive guys on the line all wanting a sack and knowing they each were gonna get their turn. We all wish this I believe!

I am hoping and praying that my team gets 1. Smarter 2. Better coached on both sides 3. MORE PHYSICAL on defense (force some turnovers dudes!!) 4. Better line play on both sides 5. And a coach that cares and gets into these remaining games on the sideline!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did anyone see Alabama’s level of play in the 2nd half after Saban just about had a seisure on the sideline towards the end of the half. That crap works!!! CMR learn it and live by it, I wanna see you throw something like you should have up in Rockytop or reward some great plays with some ENERGY!!!!! We beat gators only if!!!!!

I was kind of surprise at Spurrier’s comments about Vandy after the Georgia game. Was he watching the same division I was last year? You can no longer pencil in Kentucky and Vanderbilt as a W’s..League play has improved. If my memory serves me correct didn’t we (Georgia) kind of back into the SEC Champsionship game in 2005, thanks to a defeat of the Gators by the Gamecocks. Anything can happen. I am not giving MR any slack no matter how competitive the SEC is. Ga produces the most talentive athletes in the country but Richt doesn’t allow his athletes to display their full potential. If Lumpkin and Brown hadn’t gotten injured, we probably wouldn’t know who Moreno is. We have one of the fastest defenses in the league but Richt refuse to allow his lbs and ss to make plays by blizing the qb and disrupting the running lanes. The only player that he will allow to make plays is his mediocre qb. I guess he’s trying to convince us that Stafford is the best qb he has ever coach. I’m very supprise that(Hiesman Trophy Winner) Charlie Ward isn’t on top of Richt’s best qbs list. If Richt doesn’t allow his linebackers and safty to bliz and be more active on defense they will lose to Kentucky, Florida and Auburn.

Can only speak for my self, but I just saw two teams come into a game and both teams played to win. No backing off, no thought of balance just do whatever it takes to win. Reckless, hard hitting and no quit. TD on the last play. Great game. Will Ga. come into the “Party” and play to win? Will the Coaches have a game plan calculated to win? We’ll find out when the ball is K.O……..Altahama, oh I hope no one sets out to fire SOS, I want him to live and breath every day while he hears about the Vandy game. Just think we can ride him for a year and give’m payback in ‘08…..The Reptiles showed that they don’t have a good defense. All of their young “D” players played like what they are, young. How did Ky almost beat them today? For sure they weren’t to concerned about balance. One time? yep that’s how many times the Reptile RB ran the ball. Do we have a player on our defense that can lock on to Tebow for the whole game. Make sure he’s throwing then drop back to cover or face him up when he runs? We’ll see but I do believe we can win and it’s up to the coaches.

I just hope this latest week in college football will shut up some of you anti-Richt d*******. Everybody was griping about how we barely beat Vandy last week, and more than one comment talked about how Spurrier was in a different class than Richt. Well guess what, Spurrier just lost to Vandy, so who should be our coach now?

The lesson in all this is that college football, and the SEC in general, is more competitive than ever. It is EXTREMELY hard to go undefeated. However some Dawg fans want to fire our coach if our QB doesnt complete 85% of his passes and we don’t stop the opponent on every drive.

There’s not a single team this year that can say they have done that people! We are TIED with Florida in the SEC for pete’s sake! And we have a legitimate shot to beat them. We’re definitely not as good as we were in 2002-2005, but neither are any other teams in the NCAA! People who want to replace our coach shouldn’t be allowed in Athens…ever.

WTF you idiot, Georgia will never go 0-12. I’ll admit UF looks better than us this year, but I feel a lot better about our chances now than I did 10 years ago.

The point isn’t that UGA is great this season, because they’re not. Our 2002-2005 teams were much better. The point is that NO coach will field an amazing team every season. Dooley didn’t, Bear Bryant didn’t, Spurrier didn’t, Bowden didn’t, Stoops hasn’t, and neither will Richt

What this week does say is that we aren’t that far behind anyone else, and Richt is probably ahead of most.

Reading this blog you’d think the Dawgs played and won a game today! UT losing to Ala and Vandy beating SC has nothing to do with the quality (lack thereof)of the coaching of the Dawgs. “Backing” into the SEC Championship Game is not something we have to even think about. We’ll be lucky to win ONE of the Fla, Auburn and Ky games. Don’t believe me? Wait a week and see what happens. The reptiles are going to eat us alive in Jax. I’d love an upset but I don’t see it happening in Jax next week.

Thank you, Saban. Thank you, Vandy. It will be watching the Dogs and the Gators next Saturday. It should be a great game between two very young, but very talented teams. The score might be 65 to 60 with the way the Gators defense is playing…or not playing. But it is hard when 3 of your 4 defensive backs are freshmen, with 2 of them being true freshmen. Stafford might throw for 400 yards like Woodson did today. But good luck stopping Tebow and his gang when the Gators have the ball.

He shouldn’t have to raise he.. or show a player up on national TV like some coaches aka the old ball jerk to make some of you happy. Apparently that’s how you handle things. The OL is very young, inexperienced, and not bulked up at this point in their life. the QB has no touch on the ball. Constantly overthrowing WR’s and also behind them often. I’m watching (among other things) the Auburb-LSU game. The Auburn defense just punched the ball out of the LSU QB’s hands, picked it off and turned it into a td.Most of this season our defense has hoped for turnovers, last week they made them happen.Along with containing Tebow and hitting a long pass or two Martinez has to have his guys hitting hard and going after the ball.If Stafford hits two long ones and we get three turnovers against their offense I like our chances.I guess both of those things come down to being aggressive in smart ways.

**Loyal Dawg Fan, et al:

Do you know what a fair weather fan is?

A bandwagon fan, also called a “fair-weather fan” supports his team only when it is winning. He will often “jump” on and off the “bandwagon” of the teams having the most recent success in the major professional and college sports. He generally doesn’t care if his adopted team has a bad season, or even a bad game, as they ultimately don’t care too much about the team.

People who get upset when Gerogia loses are not fair-weather fans (see definition above). Many of these fans are more FANatic than those of you who passively accept losses.

People who criticize poor performace, have a right to speak their mind. Coaches and athletes are adults, they can take it and sometimes deserve it.

Most of the true fans who are passionate about Georgia football are just expressing their frustration with poor coaching, etc and want change in order for the Dawgs to be more successful. Once again, not characteristics of a fair-weather fan.

Most of these mislabled fair-weather fans are some of Georgia’s most dedicated and loyal fans and will still be around cheering the Dawgs (and pushing for change) long after those of you who are calling them fair-weather fans.**

I think this game sets up nicely for us frankly. We’ll be the underdog, which we like. With the way this season is going, it’s good to be the underdog. I think IF MS has his B game, I don’t think we’ll see his A game this year, and our WRs catch the ball, we can score and score a lot. KnowMo will bring his A game and open up the pass. What we need is for our D to stand up and hit Tebow A LOT. This year is taking its toll on him as was evident by the end of the game. I’m guessing that at some point he ends up hurt, might as well be us. Just in case you’ve missed it, Tebow IS this team. That’s great for them until he goes down.

You are probably one of these guys that has never supported the program but are one of the first ones to cry about a loss! By the way, I don’t need you to tell me what a fair weather fan is because I’m talking to one!!!!!!!!!!!!! Agree with replay’s comments. Give Tebow credit. He plays hard, takes everyone’s best shot, gets up and does it again. I would absolutely love to have him on my team! And he’s YOUNG; he didn’t get to play that much last year. A lot of our fans criticize him for his enthusiam but praise Moreno. Go figure.
Of course we have a chance in Jax. It is the GA-FLA game. We cannot play like we’ve played at any time this year, however. Tenn’s loss just makes me wonder how bad or how poorly prepared we frequently are. That first half of the Tenn. game will take a long time to overcome. I challenge anyone to point out a worse half of UGA football in the past 50 years. 1st half against WVU in the Sugar Bowl? NOT EVEN CLOSE! Don’t see anyone on our D who can match up, but hope I am surprised. I will be there and God knows it gets old walking out of that stadium as a loser. Go Dawgs!

I’m soooo glad you will be around “pushing for change”, cause I’m sure that’s going to make all the difference in the world in the program. I’m sure first thing CMR does in the morning is pick up the AJC to see what the all knowing armchair quarterbacks have posted.

I hope the coaches have great game plans ready for the Florida game, and that the D is rested and ready to swarm their skill players. We better have LB’s and DT’s ready to really do some damage and disrupt.

Then too, the O-line will really need to be executing. I think they will play well after a week off, and I think that we will have a few more guys ready to go like Haverkamp back I hope. I think the trenches once again will be the difference.

The only pleasure I get in seeing another team lose is the case where their loss puts my team in better shape to win our division. I don’t give a rat’s nose whether Vandy beats SC. If the dawgs can’t beat SC and Spurrier, their loss to Vandy is irrelevant. I’ll brag on my team when we beat a team….not when someone else does. I hope for the best in Jax. and hope everyone is healthy before and after the game.

Replay, Thank you firstly!

I am a fan for life. My first memories of any kind of football were the Walker years and during the eighties when we spanked the ol Gators for the most part. Then I attended and graduated during the Goff era. Now I am a realistic UGA football fan for life I must admit.

Loyal Dog,

I appreciate your passion for the team as well. We are ALL IN THE SAME BOAT TOGETHER. I will admit it was 24 months ago I began posting in the AJC chat rooms. I realy just read and laughed before. Untill Gator nation went insane on roids and the no salary cap rule in college!!! Now on these chat rooms I am constantly defending/pointing out all other things about UGA that whip UF to those over zealous and quite cocky lizard people. So as a fellow fan I will agree to disagree with you for now and not get rude. I am arguing bigger battles with lizard people on our own AJC turf.

I am not a fairweather fan! I will always pull for and yell for my dawgs on gameday. Hopefull to get back and attend some of the games again when my boy is older.
I would like to know how far are you willing to let OUR program slide back down again with CMR at the helm?? Why do you and others freak out when many great fans are starting to ask questions about large gaps in our overall schemes and game plans week after week that look SO bad (like Goff years). Or pointing out the obvious that as of late (past 2 seasons) the consistency and “heart” is totally lacking on both sides of ball. It all comes down to coaching LDF!!!

I am truly hoping the reverand gets the ship turned this next Sat!!! and then STAYS consistant after that for like the next 6 seasons or more strait!! I mean the UF domination of this series is really all that stands between UGA and another NC!!! ITs so simple. Sick to the stomach though when thinking the last time we beat the Gators 2 years in a row. I quit watching knowing we had a victory and went outside and played kick ball with my gang of 9 year olds!!! This is the saddest part of UGA football, its despicable. I want a coach that is 6-1 against these damn Gators (I will never wear those sickened colors Loyal Dog and shame on you for those comments!!)

I think if the “OLD” coach Richt shows up in Jax next week we have a GOOD chance. Our old Richt offense plan will be efficient mix of run/pass ++ keeps Teblow off the field. Stafford learns the ol Dave Green CAMERAS ARE FAKED handoff and throws at will on play action!!!! Knowshon gets 145 rushing. BIGGEST KEY is that our defense knocks there socks off and keeps them under 17 pts untill late when it shouldn’t matter. But wait that was Van Gorder’s department and he is gone now. (insert WIll MUSCHAMP here!!)

Loyal Dawg, lets both dream softly this week of Willie in practice going nuts!! Bleeding because he is head butting all of his main guys coaching the boys up with all his best blitz trickery scemes and focus defensive drills on tackling and body smaking.

I just don’t understand Coach Richt anymore!! Its been some of the most frustrating GA football for me recently. Cause we used to look SO DAMN GOOD!!! I will give the guy more chances but realy am waiting for the light to go off, mainly on defense or we will be back where we were in the 90’s beating who?? now in the SEC EAST. KY and Vandy are way better!! We better start progressing and kicking some SEC east A** or Richts own early UGA success will be his undoing. The fans have now tasted the blood with SEC champ. games and want more. Our college is a huge power machine of money and talent that could own UF and the SEC if UGA went after it. I will as an alumni demand it!!!

For the record, during the SOS post game interview he made the comment, ” Well, we can’t trade our players so we might as well coach them up better.” What a classless POS. USC will now start unraveling. All is right with the world.

As for this Saturday. WM had better have the Dawgs ready to play some defense. Give the devil his due, Tebow is a good football player and a heck of a competitor. IMO we must assign a spy on him the whole game and not take his eyes off him no matter which direction the play is going. Auburn just scored, what a ballgame. These are 2 teams giving it all they got for 4 quarters. WM, I love you man, but if you will watch Auburn’s WM for a little while you will see what it takes to compete in the SEC on a regular basis. Auburn seems to get meaner every week. God bless and GO DAWGS!

I lived in Cartersville back in the late 80s and got to know a radio sports announcer in the area.I’d read a story about Richard Samuel being asked to not hit so hard by an official in a recent game. The guy was afraid he was going to seriously injure somebody.I talked to the radio guy tonight and he confirmed it happened.I’m told Samuel hits harder than anybody he’s ever seen for his size.I’d hate to lose him at rb but we could sure use a slobber knocker like him at lb.

We bloggers are hilarious! One week, last week, we’re calling for CMR’s head. Martinez is a joke! UGA is slipping! This week, one of us says “Georgia is the cream of the crop.” All of it is ridiculous. UGA is a young team that has great potential, but lacks consistency. That’s the truth. We’re neither the cream of the crop nor a slipping program. We are young, talented and full of potential. Next year we’ll be better than this year. But we play in the ultra-competitive SEC where dominance is a thing of the past. Even if UF goes to Atlanta this year, they’ll do it with at least two losses. That’s not dominance, that’s survival of the fittest.

Georgia has the talent to beat any team they play. But they expected a win against South Carolina and lost… and they failed to show up against Tennessee. Usually, the season is ended by this point.

However, this year, Georgia has a chance for redemption and to make a statement about who they are and where they are going.

I hope they answer the call.

Bulldog Bill, your insight is remarkable. You condensed the UF an UK games down to the obvious. Both of those teams will score points, we have to score more if we have any chance to win. Good point.

On the subject of critiscism. I don’t mind the pointing out of flaws in strategy or even bad plays. But some of these crtitiscism’s border on hatred and personal attacks to someone’s character. I don’t like those. Critique all you want, just show some class when you do.

Showing a lot of emotion as a head coach is fine, but I’d rather have a coach like Richt that shows class than Spurrier any day.

Tell me again how great Spurrier is? What has he done with the last two teams he has coached. He barely has a winning record since leaving FL.

Was Vandy trying to run up the score on South Carolina at home with 2 minutes to go? USC fans shown streaming for the exits with about 7 minutes to go!

Spurrier shows a lot of fire on the sideline and did it help his team win? He then threw his team under the bus (not taking any blame himself). “We can’t trade any of ‘em, so I guess we will just have to coach them up”.

I’ll take Richt and his winning percentage and class over Spurrier.

Other excellent coaches such as Pete Carrol and Urban Meyer, don’t look like they live and die with each play and don’t get in their players grills in front of the cameras.

If I were a FL fan, I would not be able to forgive Meyer for stating in USA Today that Joiner would not see the field while he had a felony pending and then play him in all the rest of the games. Not only is it clearly wrong to play Joiner, but to flatly state one thing on Tuesday and then care only about winning against LSU on Saturday night, is unforgivable.

There just aren’t many SEC fans that can feel good about their teams this season:

South Carolina: They were one of the few teams that could feel good, but they just suffered a humiliating loss to Vandy at home in a year where most fans probably thought this would be the breakout Gamecock year. Likely to suffer a 3 loss season at a minimum which prior to the season that might have been considered good. Not in OCT when you lose to Vandy at home as a top 10 team with the inside track to win the SEC East for the first time in school history.

TN: After manhandling UGA to quiet some of Fulmer’s critics, TN gets crushed by a team that UGA beat on the road? I don’t think TN fans saw that coming and it is likely to start the unofficial search committees in motion.

FL: The Felons get a win by outscoring KY to avoid a 3 game losing streak going into the party. If the Felons can beat the DAWGS, they will be in good shape to win the East, but are their fans happy with a 2-3 loss season? Especially after sinking to historic depths by playing Joiner.

Georgia: While the Vandy victory at SC takes some of the sting of a last minute victory against the ‘Dores away… UGA still has not played well since the opener.

Auburn:

A win against LSU would have set up the possibility of a great stretch run after beating FL in the swamp after a terrible start to their season. Auburn played well at LSU, but fans can’t be thrilled with 3 losses with a couple of tough game still to go.

It is a wild year in the SEC with Vandy, Kentucky, and South Carolina showing significant improvement. Halfway through the conference schedule everyone but Vandy has a chance to win the East.

BulldogBill, Bingo! The game this year will be a shoot out and if our Coaches don’t think so then we’re hip deep in Reptiles. Speed does kill but do we have anyone who is fast enough to stay with the Reptile receivers? This won’t, IMO, be a game like the last couple have been with 14-10 being the final score. I admired the way both Ky. and the Reptiles played last night. Both teams came in playing to win. Reptiles have more overall talent and in the end it showed. If we play with the idea that we’ll do whatever it takes we’ll have a chance. I’m glad the Coaches decided to protect CK so he’ll be there for 4 more years because we don’t need him, we have enough running backs. Come back on me after the game but the Reptiles will put at least 28 or more on the board and if they don’t I don’t want to ever hear another word about how Martinez can’t coach. We have no reason to hold anything back on offense and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that Moreno doesn’t go down.

The SEC, WOW what a conference. If Ohio State and Boston College were in the SEC they would have at least two losses by now.

To the Ol’ Ball Coach. Pphhhtht. So Georgia lost to Vandy last year at home. Join the club. By the way in case you didn’t realize it, you have no class. Why would any recruit in his right mind want to set himself up for your kind of abuse. Be a man and take the blame.

Tennessee? Snicker, Snicker. One good thing for Phil is that he should qualify for the maximum unemployment check.

Any reasonable person would doubt the Dawgs chances of making it to the Ga. Dome but hey, stranger things have happened and this definitly qualifies as a strange season.

Florida and Kentucky are all offense and no defense. The Dawgs get the gators after a bye week on a “neutral field”. We have a chance if we can play good D and don’t make mistakes. May take a miracle play on the order of Appleby to Washington or Belue to Scott. It can be done.

We get Kentucky at home. (See above analysis)

Auburn is the team that scares me at this moment. We get them at home, but homefield advantage doesn’t seem to mean much in this rivalry.

In this crazy season WHY NOT US? It can be done. Hopefully we are jelling just as we did around this time last year. An upset in JAX would go a long way confidence wise for a young Georgia team. We need to find a way to make the gators one-demensional on O and I can think of no better way than to “spy” Tebow with a ‘backer and knock the snot out of him. I know he’s a big strong kid, but with his style of play his time is running out. The gators don’t seem to have much confidence in their running game outside of Tebow. We gotta make them beat us through the air.

I know it’s a very long shot, but at this point in the season it’s good to still be able to say that the DAWGS still control their own destiny. GO DAWGS!!! Woof!

Ironic that by having the toughest and best conference in the country we actually hurt ourselves in the BCS in the long run. Check amout of Bulldogs in the NFL , check winning percentage compared to active college coaches. I could go on and on and on. I live in the Pacific NW as I’ve said before there are at least 6 high level division 1A colleges that would pay CMR millions to coach their team. Ask Washington about their coaching savior (Willingham) how about Nebraska’s savior (Callahan) how about Notre Dames savior (Weise) how about the guy that was going to save TA&M (Francino). People you need to Freaking wake up and realize we have a competitive top-notch program that is one of the best in the country. Top 5 easy. The country knows about UGA and their good coach. New blogger here. Here’s a thought: Everybody loves their team (go dawgs), but I think it’s great that the SEC is the most competitive conference in the country. I love to win, but football season is so much more fun to follow now that any team can put it all together and beat any other team on the schedule. Everybody has to bring it every week…and that makes all teams better, and all games more fun to watch! The Dawgs have a realistic chance against FL. Naysayers, would you be so negative about the game if it were to follow this year’s GA-BAMA game?? Again, the season has ups and downs for all teams, and that’s what makes the SEC so great. You just never know. Another thought: Put Ohio State in the SEC, and they are a two-loss team like the rest of us. Who agrees??

Really, it doesn’t hurt too bad. I said from day one, Tennessee had a bunch of holes to plug and to date, they have only found a way to plug them well in one game. Always hope for the best though…Saban pulls a Zooked’em with somebody else’s recruits. I already posted my congrats to the Red Elephants. Won’t do it twice…With two freshman starting in UT’s secondary, John Bubba Parker Wilson had his way with us. The UT D continued it’s solid 2007 meltdown. Isn’t this where all 2nd tier teams say, ” We’re young in spots and rebuilding. A learning experience for the kids..” The Crimson Fried had a good game plan on both sides of the ball. What with amassing over 500 yds of total offense, they had a good game plan. Even an average scheme would have sufficed… A.Foster ended the day with a 7.0 ypc for the Vols…Rah…

Has anybody mentioned it appeared Tebow took some whacks to the right arm/shoulder against Kentucky and showed wince..? At games end, he had the arm held tight to the body. Is the punishment of being UF’s offensive catalsyt starting to take it’s toll..? Doubtful that it’ll be mentioned as even a minor concern to the Urban Cowboy, but if I were WM…Beat the body and the mind will follow…Good Luck in JAX

Gen. Neyland - Yes, today’s news is that Tebow will have no contact all week during practices. His right shoulder is very bruised from last night’s game. Two other Gators are hurt worse and will also miss practice time.
Reality - FLA does clean up annually in recruiting. Who is the #2 QB right now? If Meyer doesn’t back off Tebow a little on the run, that #2 QB better be ready…and soon. Tebow is a hoss, but he can’t do it all. Teams will key on Percy and the FLA offense could grind to a halt.

Why isn’t anyone shooting flames at that total pu$$y cheap shot artist Chaz Ramsey. Replays showed Auburn offensive guard Chaz Ramsey diving at Dorsey’s knee as Dorsey was engaged at the line of scrimmage with another Auburn offensive lineman. That A*******hoel should be suspended for at least one game and not allowed to make the bowl trip that Auburn will make. If not, then Tommy Tuberville will be just as low class in my book and should be fired!

I may disagree with the way CMR does some things but one thing I know for sure. He won’t have his players going after Tebows shoulder. I’m glad we have a coach like that. The responsibility lays with Meyer to not put his QB in a position to be hurt. Tebow won’t run as much so take two guys and put the fastest on Percy and the hardest hitter on Tebow then let the other 9 play regular FB. Tebow can indeed throw the ball so we better be prepared.

Buck I agree our defense shouldn’t go after Tebow’s shoulder. On the other hand, it’s a contact sport. We’ve lost two out of three RBs.Do you think the UF defense will pass on a chance to hit Moreno ? I wish we had players who could (would ?) really lay into people.I’m guessing Meyer is glad they’re facing us and not Auburn or LSU with Tebow injured.I disagree with those who say the defensive scheme isn’t effective,it is.The problem with our defense is a lack of aggression. As coach Richt has said, they just need to be meaner.I saw where Van Halenger is working more with the players in season now.I’ve said they need a designated motivator and tackling coach, maybe coach Van can bring out the mad in these Dawgs.

Okay here is the deal. Don’t go after his shoulder, but for God’s sake don’t hold up on a hit cause the guy is injured. This is college football, not PE. If you don’t go after the guy, he is gonna burn you. Hit him with everything including the kitchen sink. Not to hurt him, just slow him down cause I don’t think you can stop him. If he gets hurt, hey he made his choice to play this game. He knows the risks and he has seen the rewards. He is a great player and I respect him, but he plays on the opposite team and I want to contain the son of a gun.

I have been following UGA football since the days of Francis Tarkenton. Although I am not a fan of Auburn and/or Tubberville, you have to give Tubberville credit. The Auburn team is as young as Georgia and, after their first two games, they have improved every week. With Tubberville on the sideline Auburn always has a chance. Do you die-hard UGA fans, who believe the sun rises and sets in Richt, think his team would have performed as well as Auburn in Tiger stadium last night? They would have gotten run out of the ball park, which is what very probably will happen to them in Jacksonville this Saturday. Richt is not the coach Tubberville is and, yes, I remember Auburn last year. Fact is, Tubberville has a good staff behind him and the GUTS to get rid of them who ain’t. Try saying that about Richt. Richt has been lucky but luck is not eternal. If Georgia is fortunate the rest of the season, they may beat Troy( although I wouldn’t bet the house on it) and, maybe, Tech. Extremely fortunate, and maybe one more. It takes more than being Mr. Goodguy to win big-time in the SEC consistently. Nothing personal, just politics.

Is it likely that Georgia will win… no. I quit thinking that way about 8 years ago…the gators always seem to bring their very best game to Jacksonville… but is it possible for the Dawgs to win and then put together a run? Absolutely. Florida and Georgia are both young and inconsistent. Tebow is hurt. Georgia had an off week to heal and get ready. Nobody can predict the way things are going to fall this year… call it the season of uncertainty. This Georgia team has underachieved the entire year and may be due to break out… let’s let them play the game and then we can all talk trash.

MCG 73 - You say you remember the Auburn/UGA game last year. Well, what’s your explanation of the outcome? Your boy Tuberville was on the sideline making decisions, and Richt was on the other, making decisions that won the game. Your post makes no sense.

MCG73, nothing personal, but you’re a moron. Richt has a better winning percentage than Tuberville, more championships, and pulled even head to head with him in last year’s beatdown. IMHO with the Dawgs being down to one true Tail Back they need to take the shirt off of Caleb King. As for Tebow, football is a contact sport and I wouldn’t go out of my way to try and injure him but I also wouldn’t take it easy on him either.

By Chip Towers

Two things on the “go for Tebow’s shoulder” strategy:

1) Could you be any more low class than intentionally trying to injure an opponent?

2) Have any of you guys been anywhere near the field of an SEC game? Have you any idea of the speed of these athletes? You can’t “go for” a shoulder or a knee or anything. They’re trying to bring these guys down with anything and everything they can get their hands on. If you’re lucky enough to get a full on shot on somebody, believe me, you’re not thinking about which body part you’re going to try to hit.

tebow is a big guy and presses 400 lbs,he is also a very good runner,as good as most fullbacks i have seen.instead of going for anything, especially on his upper body, they had better try to wrap his legs or grab him and hold on untill help arrives.hit him high if you want, but you may be the one carried off the field.this kid knows how to DELIVER a blow, unlike most qbs.

Tebow’s shoulder will be fine. It was actually hurting before the game. Evidently in an attempt to mesh with the Lexington locals, Tebow joined in on a musical armpits concert at a local eatery. After a night of arm flapping, Tebow’s shoulder was sore.

The only sore shoulder Saturday will be from the officials signaling first down and Touchdown repeatedly as the we make it 16-18.

Most people fly the flags when the hill is taken, not lost…pick a school, local or abroad…

Tebow has earned my respect. Being 60% plus of the UF offense has begun to take it’s toll. I believe this will be his first SEC game at less than 100%…I feel he’ll do his best to steer clear of over-stuffing his body between the tackles, but I believe he’ll continue to run. If any body part is to suffer the wear and tear he goes through, the right shoulder vs left, legs, head, etc was the one. He took alot of blows to that shoulder with Kentucky. He’ll put it on the line, he won’t back down and he’ll give it his all. Tim Tebow has shown me he is a warrior…

I agree with you. I’m definitely no Tebow fan because he is a gator but that kid is an awesome football player. Florida is no secret this year. To beat them Tebow has to be contained as much as possible. He’s already proven thats easier said than done. Florida has other play makers but they cannot make the plays without Tebow. He is the entire key to the Gator offense this year. I’m glad we got them with Tebow at least a little sore. We’ll need all the advantage we can get. We have a chance to beat Florida this week and I think we can do it. As crazy as this year has been it is almost in the stars that FL goes down just to muck up the water a little more.

Chip:

Yes, You can cheat by spying on teams and then follow that up by lying about it. Or you can be a coach who assaults your own players for celebrating a victory, then be so arrogant you refuse to apologize for it.

Why don’t you tell the best defensive players in the SEC that they don’t oftentimes have the choice of which body parts to hit when tackling a player. What an ignorant comment and an insult.

You can keep your rose-colored glasses. If teams committing NCAA violations were outed right now, half of Bowl Championship Division Schools would be on probation right now - AND many of the teams in the Top 25. but I don’t suppose you think that’s happening.

Okay, the Jacksonville Convention treaty is now suspended, so let the Gators-Dawgs smack-talk begin … .

  1. First things first: the name of the game. Originally, Dawgs called it the Georgia-Florida game; then the Gators called it the Florida-Georgia game. After that, everyone called it the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party,” but unfortunately, that name has officially passed into history. Now, my UGA buddies just call it “the Holocaust.”

  2. What’s in a Name, Part II: Let’s just agree that whichever team wins the game this year, their school name goes first in the order (i.e. the Florida-Georgia game). Tony Barnhart and Chip Towers, time to update the AJC style book.

  3. Overall series record? Georgia still leads the overall series, but the head-to-head record is really 45-37-2, or an 8-game UGA advantage through the 2006 season. The UGA athletic department claims the overall record is 46-37-2, or a 9-game advantage. The difference? UGA’s athletic department claims a 1904 win over an East Florida Seminary club football team (i.e. non-varsity, non-university sanctioned team). Nice. You doubt me? Really? Look it up for yourself——the University of Florida did not exist under its present name until 1905, did not hold classes in Gainesville until 1906, and did not have a varsity football team that played the Bulldogs until 1915. Who’s stretching the truth to claim the extra win? Well, it seems a little churlish to claim the extra win, but I’ll let you be the fair-minded judge. In nine years, it won’t matter anyway… .

  4. The “Mythical” National Championships? The Gators have won 2 national football championships on the field (1996-97 vs. FSU; 2006-07 vs. Ohio State), and played for a third (1995-96 vs. Nebraska), during the BCS/Bowl Alliance era. The Dawgs’ athletic department claims 2 consensus polling championships (1942 & 1980), and acknowledges at least one polling service “championship” among the multitude of football polls in the pre-Associated-Press-Poll-dominant era for three other seasons (1927, 1946 & 1968), but none since 1980. Likewise, the Gators could claim a New York Times Poll championship in 1984, but do not.

  5. The Conference Championships? The Gators have won seven SEC conference championships (1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2006), played in two more SEC championship games (1992 & 1999), and also had the best SEC records for two other seasons (1984 & 1990). During that same time period, the Dawgs have won two SEC championships on the field during the championship game era (2002 & 2005), and previously won 10 more (1942, 1946, 1948, 1959, 1966, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1981 & 1982), three of which were shared titles with Tennessee or Alabama (1946, 1966 & 1981).

  6. The Heisman Trophy? Two apiece for the Gators and the Dawgs. For UGA, Frank Sinkwich won the award in 1942 and Herschel Walker in 1982. For the Gators, the Evil Genius won in 1966 and Danny Wuerffel in 1996.

  7. The SAT scores, for the record: UGA 25th-75th percentiles, 1130-1320; UF 25th-75 percentiles, 1140-1360. Gator freshman are apparently better standardized test takers.

  8. U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings? Florida is ranked 49th among 124 first-tier national universities; UGA is ranked 59th.

  9. Football graduation rates? Most recent (1996-1999) NCAA graduation success rate (GSR) for UF is 80%; UGA’s most recent GSR is 41%. The NCAA GSR tracks the academic progress of freshman scholarship athletes for the 6 school years after enrollment, so the current 1996-1999 GSRs are actually current through the 2006 graduation year. BTW, the Gator basketball team had a 100% NCAA GSR during the same time period.

  10. Best obnoxious white-shoe-polish-on-the-car-window taunt: “You have to win one to call it a rivalry.”

Okay, smack-talkers … have at it. Let the annual games begin.

For a minute there I thought you were giving a pretty decent history lesson until you made statement #3, then subsequent #4 and #5. Theres where you bored me with the “same time period” slant bullcrap. Why do you only wish to acknowledge national championships and conference championships of Ga and FL post 1982 as if pre 1982 doesn’t exist?

True, your teams of the last 15 or so years have been dominate in the series. Except for a peppered win here and there for the down team the pendelum does tend to swing both ways every decade or so. Why don’t we choose a cut off date of 1990 and bragg about Florida’s accomplishments prior to that? But why do you harp on the history anyway? It has exactly dick to do with whats going to happen in J’ville on Saturday anyway?

Why not discuss the team your bringing to the field on Saturday? You know, the one that has already proven it can be beaten by both unranked as well as the top ranked teams in the country. I tend to think you might possibly be a bit scared that the Dawgs can or will upset your beloved Gators. Thats the only rationale I can see for you attempting to focus on the most recent successes of Florida since (oh pick a date ) 1990

ARDawg——I think I gave the Dawgs their due and omitted nothing in the series history that is favorable to them, but I also think it’s also as fair and valid to discuss the recent series history over the last 20-30 years as it is discuss the lop-sided records of the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s in favor of the Dawgs.

As for the overall series record, I think you have to agree that the inclusion of the UGA varsity eleven’s victory over an East Florida Seminary club team in 1904 is unworthy of the series. BTW, the University of Florida celebrated 100 years of Gator football in 2006 (i.e. 1906-2006). If the UGA athletic department wants to claim the extra 1904 win, please don’t be upset when others question whether it’s valid or not.

As for a little smack talk among football fans, well, as my friend Cuz instructed me when I started my time on the AJC blogs: “Lighten up, fella. A little good-natured smack talk never hurt anyone.” Time to get in the spirit of the thing. As for me, I will be hosting a Florida-Georgia party at my house in Atlanta for my friends who are Gator and Dawg alumni. I figure the least I could do is buy you Dawgs fans a drink or two. LOL

Trust me here friend, I love and encourage the smack talk. As you and Cuz declare, all in the spirit of the rivalry and sportmanship. It is not only needed but required of us fans to perpetuate the excitement.

However, I wasn’t in any form questioning the 1904 game. It really doesn’t matter to me. But I do question your need to take snapshots of history to illustrate your point. It would appear that you want to take FL history 1984, 1992 onward and pretend that the other years are meaningless. Look at the history as a whole. The entire 100 years of Gator football not just one Pell year and Spurrier on. Okay, we’re only 8 wins better than FL at the moment. Look for a bonafide 9 wins come this Saturday.

BTW, the latter part of my previous post was smack and all good natured

Lowcountry Dawg——Y’know, UF alumni include astronauts, athletes, congressmen, senators, governors, journalists, popular authors, Fortune 500 CEOs and Nobel Prize winners, but ol’ Jed Clampett always epitomized the wisdom of the simple, common Americn man. We’ll claim him. I think I’ll wander down to the concrete swimming pond, sip some white lightning from my Mason jar, and toast ol’ Jed.

ARDawg——No, sir——as a real fan, you have to be willing to cheer through the good and the bad and accept it all. When your boys do something naughty like Charley Pell and his assistants did in the 1980’s, you can’t ignore or disclaim that part of your history, or the mediocre seasons in other decades. Better to admit it, take your lumps, move on, and encourage your people to do the right thing in the future. Loyalty is admirable, blind loyalty is

Whenever I attend a Gator coach’s off-season alumni gathering, I always make the point of congratulating the coach on his or her recent successes in front of the audience, but I also always remind them of their other duties to the university and that this old Gator will be the first to organize the campaign for a new coach if we ever get hauled in front of the NCAA again. I honestly believe that our president, AD and coaches are committed to athletic (and academic) excellence without fudging the rules. There is a lot more at stake here than just wins and losses——and that is reflected in value of our academic degrees.

BTW, I expect that the series margin will be SEVEN (7) games after this year’s Annual Bulldawg Beatdown at the Beach, but opinions may differ. = )

Feel free as long as that Mason jar gets passed up here to Charleston!

Whats bad is going into this game its clear what UGA needs to do…Pressure Tebow, hit him alot, don’t let hi gash you up the middle. Then when it comes to passing lock down Harvin and make the other phenoms beat you. Although I susppect depending on the severity of his shoulder you may see alot more of Tebows are than legs.

Now with that being said it may be near impossible for our D to do that. If a defense hasn’t been able to do it yet, why should I feel incouraged that our D is going to finally be the one?

Not getting my hopes up to high, but damn it would be great to steal this one!

Can Vanderbilt still not receive any respect from UGA fans. UGA did IN NO WAY manhandle the Commodores two weeks ago, so you obviously missed the game or couldn’t read the score. A late fumble handed you the game. And don’t forget what happened last year in Athens. Just accept the fact that our program is catching up fast. Go Dores!

Well stated and I completely agree (sic) with you the gator fan. Unfortunately there are still plenty of coaches that subscribe to the “If you’re not cheating…you’re not trying hard enough” mantra. But hopefully they will all get their just due.

For the sake of furthering this pleasant banter with you I will officially denounce the 1904 game as the most insignificant and irrelevent in Bulldog history. Unless of course in the HIGHLY unlikely event Florida actually in the next 40 years does actually come out ahead in a series lead, I’ll recant this statement….L

I’m with you. Tebow is the entire key to the FL offense. We’ve got to stop his run but also be ready for the option. They’ve not perfected it but certainly like to use it with regularity. Thats a weak spot. Stay in his face and make the others make the plays. It’s much easier to type than to do I’m sure. If we see that defense that showed up to play bama or the 2nd half of Vandy we have a legitimate shot of knocking FL off. Our offense while sluggish can put up some points. Our key is defense. Which one will Martinez have ready to play?

Martinez needs to take a page out of the Tampa Bay Bucs and Carolina Panthers defensive playbooks. When Vick first came into the league, he killed those two teams with his improvising, until they took Simeon Rice and Julius Peppers and played them as a “spy” on Vick. After that, they were able to shut down Vick, for the most part.

Not saying the gators are the falcons, honestly, the gators could probably beat the falcons, but our defensive ends, while they may be undersized, definitely have the athletic ability to hang as a “spy” with Tebow….wonder if we’ll try anything like that?

This is one of those games where Stafford or Bailey or Moreno can create a legacy a UGA with a big game and big win over our biggest rival Florida. Who was the last UGA quarterback who graduated with a winning record against FL?

By crs

October 23, 2007 1:01 PM | Link to this

Just as Spurrier did when he came to FL to beat UGA, Richt needs to make the same commitment to beat FL, you know as long as Urban is there he is going to have a mobile quarterback and a lot of fast, quality wide recievers, hence you have to recruit depth and speed at cornerback and recuit either a fast and strong linebacker or saftey to spy their quarterback. We have had a lot of success in the Richt era but you have to beat your biggest rival to truly be successful. And lets be honest if we get back to beating FL most years, we will be winning most of our other games. Its nice to beat Auburn and GT but nothing is sweeter than beating the Gators! In the teams goals for the year, beating the gators should be number one yearly.

By Atlanta Gator

October 23, 2007 1:42 PM | Link to this

CRS——The last UGA quarterbck with an overall winning record against Florida was Wayne Johnson. Johnson was the starter for one year in 1988; he was 1-0 against the Gators. Greg Talley was UGA’s starter for the two seasons following (1989-1990); he was 1-1 against the Gators.

Bama beats LSU, Ark beats LSU and Auburn wins out…see you in Atlanta, THAT IS DREAMING, here is the real story: LSU kicks Bama butt, wins out, Auburn finishes 9-3 or 8-4, depending on UGA game, LSU slaughters Oregon or Southern Cal for the MNC.. UGA 24 Florida 17, I have been correct on EVERY UGA game this year.

You know, it’s just like some of you UGA fans to act that way. My following comments are not for the mass of UGA fans that know how to behave appropriately. They are for the few that are bringing down a great program:

I have to admit you have some of the worst fans in the world! Who’s the idiot who made the comment, “we man-handled Vandy!” What crack pipe are you smoking? Yes, your defense played pretty well that game, as always. But guess what? A game that is decided by a red-zone fumble and a last second field goal is not a man-handling on any part. Get your head out of your as* and pay attention. Don’t take away the big win for my Commodores just because you’re feelings are still hurt after getting spanked in Knoxville. I hope Florida crushes you this weekend! Having lived in Tampa, Florida for the last 4 years I have noted on fact about the Gators. However overly obsessed they may be about their football program they always seem to carry themselves with a bit of class. They seem to call it like they see it and not come up with BS excuses. When they lose they respond with we shouldn’t have done this or we shouldn’t have done that. Not grype about petty calls and fire up their own players and coaches. Why don’t you step to the appropriate level and learn a little from them. Have some class, realize that you don’t make the SEC what it is…you are 1/12th of whats the SEC what it is, and whether you like it or not the conference is changing and we’ll be gunning for you and every other program on our schedule for years to come. Act like a fan, support your team to the fullest, and show respect for the game…on and off the field!!!

Go ‘Dores!

I really don’t see what the big deal is with Richt kissing his wife. It has to be better for the ratings than to see Stafford spoon his “backup”…

Richt says the the guys didn’t understand his celebratory instructions. That’s still a direct reflection of his leadership. This team is looking more and more his Richt’s alma mater. (Without the National Championships to back it up)

Hard to believe a man of “faith” would allow his players to taunt the opposition. If he truly believes in each aspect of faith. Then again, maybe the players are unable to interpret his faith? Especially since they can’t seem to interpret his coaching decisions.

As much as things change, they still stay the same. Taunting without the NC’s to back it up… Pathetic

Am I to understand you are saying you have an MBA from UT? In that case, it’s hilarious that you don’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re.” I correct my grade school daughters on this, but, heck, they could get a business degree from UT right now!

They also understand that we are ranked #10 in the BCS and “your” ranked #27. Even if you win out, you’ll be playing in the Music City Bowl after losing 48-0 to LSU whereas if we win out we’ll get an at large bid to the BCS.

Nice showing of class there by running onto the field after the first touchdown of a game. Great, classy move. Par for the course for UGA, I guess.
