UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Dogs’ season reaches fork in road

We’re going to keep it real simple today, mainly because I’m heading out of town (Knoxville, of course) and I don’t have much time.

First off, who’s going to win this game Saturday and why? Now I’m not interested in any of that, “Georgia is great, Tennessee stinks” nonsense. I’m talking about Xs and Os and matchups and homefield advantage, etc.

As everybody knows, the Dogs have won in their last three trips to Rocky Top. Does that give Georgia a psychological advantage or does it motivate the Vols that much more?

I think the game boils down to two things in particular myself: Georgia’s running game versus the Vols’ suspect defense and Eric Ainge and Tennessee’s passing attack versus the Dogs’ inexperienced secondary and linebackers. I might give the Dogs a slight edge in special teams. But, all things considered, it appears a pretty even matchup. Last I heard was the line had moved from UT as a slight favorite to the Dogs as a slight favorite. Definitely a pick ‘em in my opinion.

Meanwhile, I was the guest on four different Tennessee radio shows this week and every one of them talked about how important this game is for Vols coach Phillip Fulmer. Not sure what AD Mike Hamilton is thinking on the subject but what about you? Should a coach that has won more than 75 percent of his games and a national championship be in position to lose his job?

OK, I’ve got my Verizon card with me so I’ll tune in and respond to your comments every chance I get. So let’s hear what you’re thinking.

On that note, I would like to personally thank all of you for slowly but surely turning this into one of the most popular online communities on our website. I appreciate the feedback on what we’re doing so, as always, you’re suggestions are welcomed.

Y’all play nice now. C-ya!

If our O-line can keep the running game alive, which in turn will enable the passing game, we win this thing.

I think Martinez and company can keep Ainge in check (meaning under 20 points) and not allow another disaster like last year’s second half.

If this works, I plan to replace Lou Holtz as a motivational speaker.

You hit the nail on the head: It’ll be Tennessee’s passing attack versus Georgia’s running game, so a time of possession game favors us Dawgs. However, the team that makes the fewest mistakes and has the fewest turnovers should win.

Just don’t turn the ball over, Dawgs…don’t turn the ball over…and you’ll win…We should also do our best to get into Coutu’s range on every drive…we should strive to get an automatic 6 to 9 points out of him every game…Sobedawg

It seems to me that Georgia has not shown a whole lot of diversity on offense and this has to be the game where they open their bag of tricks. As South Carolina’s speedier atheletes showed, those dump offs and screen passes don’t work nearly as well against the upper echelon SEC teams. I understand Bobo tries to keep if relatively simple for the young pups on the O-Line, but UT has had 2 weeks to review the current Offensive packagaes of the Dawgs. The same ol’ same ‘ol will get beat this saturday. New wrinkles and some surprises will shake the Vols confidence.

As long as the Georgia defense is patient and tackles well, there will NOT be another 51 points thrown on the board by Ainge and co.

Hostile crowds are clearly not a factor under CMR, and I think the depth (young or not) on both sides of the ball will pull the dogs through.

prediction: Ainge throws 2 picks and the dogs control the clock on the ground. Georgia 30 UT - 21

Should be a good one - those predicting a blowout in either direction I think are off base. UGA has a huge task on their hands keeping Ainge in check and if they don’t get pressure on him then it’s going to be a long one. I believe TN is going to pull an extra man up and stop the run…well at least give it their best shot. It’s going to be on #7 to complete passes and those on the receiving end to catch the ball.

Personally, I am very concerned about this game. Something just doesn’t feel right and it hasn’t all week long. Maybe a play maker will step up this week on D and make a huge play for the Dawgs. It might take a key pick and a big ST return to win this thing.

I’ll be decked out in my red and black tomorrow afternoon hooping and hollering - expecting nothing less than another SEC battle royal.

I just hope it’s not as close as the UGA-Alabama game. We cannot continue to have close games against really good teams. Everthing considered though, this game looks to be another one of those stress-inducing nailbiters. Of course, I choose the Bulldogs to win but I’ll have Maalox next to my Miller Lite. Go Dawgs

I’m like pj, I worry about our play calling. sometimes it does not make sense. I hope we don’t drive the field running the ball then get to the 20, throw 3 incomplete passes then kick a field goal. We also need to do some stuff they haven’t seen to keep their defense from gearing toward our bread and butter plays. Defense will be ok but will give up 14-21 points. Special teams ( KICK OFF COVERAGE) worries me some. They don’t need to start at the 35-40 yard line EVERYTIME ! DAWGS 31 UT 21. Ball control will be key, it will be 88 and hot and their D needs to be on the field all day, not ours !

This game worries me a little—ok, a LOT. Why?? Because GEORGIA has been up & down last year & this year. We should’ve beat SC, but we didn’t. TENN has had an off-week to get ready, and although the DAWGS have won @TENN their last three trips, TENN’s big win last year (51-33) probably washed away that physiological advantage. And the fact that GEORGIA hasn’t shown it can come out & play 60-min. of lights-out ball worries me. I’m pull’en for my DAWGS, but I’m not sure I could—or would— put money on this game.

Jack, you are right on! I say this not in jest - you are ready for the TV booth. You can’t be any worse than some of those guys from the Dept. of Redundancy Dept.

Like any SEC slugfest, UGA/TN will have nothing to do with records or rankings. It’s this simple - if UGA executes and controls the clock along with adequate D, they win. If they bog down on O, have 2+ turnovers and let Ainge and Co. hang around - anything can happen. Should be another great game to watch in the southland!! Even a Dawg has to love the wild atmosphere of Neyland. Just keep the ‘Rocky Top’ down to 20 times or less, ok??

By Skydawg

Turnovers cost the Dawgs that game last year and it will determine the outcome this year as well. When you turn the ball over 4 times, twice inside your own 20 yd line and get a punt blocked for a TD..sure you’ll give up 51 pts. Lets not make UT out to be some giant killer last year. If the Dawgs control the ground game and the clock, Dawgs will win. I look for Moreno to have a BIG game.

By Brian

Turnovers and penalties. If we avoid those two things ala Ole Miss we win going away. I dont see UT sustaining multiple long drives against the Dawgs, so if we play mistake free football we have the more talented team and win in the fourth quarter.

O.K. - I’m a Bulldawg, through and through. I’m also an alumnus and season ticket holder for twenty-five years. Yea, I’m biased. I’ll try not to be here.

Tennessee is two and two, their losses by top-ten teams. In both games, the score indicates they had their pants taken down. Their two wins are against cupcakes. Georgia lost to one fairly good team (four points) and then improved to beat a fairly good Alabama team in Tuscaloosa. Good wins, but not the calibur of competition Tennessee has played. I think the face-plant given by Tennessee to Georgia in Athens last year erases any momentum Georgia had in the recent series (I’m still cussing our losing a 17 point half-time lead). Yea, Fulmer is worried and he has an extra week to focus on Georgia. He also has us at home. I’ve got the game dead even for all the reasons mentioned in this thread. Georgia needs to control the line of scrimmage early and take the crowd out of the game. I think controlling the line on both sides of the ball will be key here.

Finally, concerning Fulmer, a Tennessee fan said, “I know Fulmer played here, coached here and won a national championship.” “But when the tire goes bald - you replace it.” Fulmer’s tire isn’t bald yet, and they would be foolish to let him go right now. He is still a good man, and found a way to beat us pretty good last year when most teams would have rolled-over after that half-time lead. Go Dawgs!

I think this will be a great game filled with a ton of emotion. This is growing into one the best rivalries in the SEC thanks to the tenure of Richt making this the game as crucial as is now in the East.

Bottom line is something is going to give, from UT playing D, to Stafford having to throw, to whoever has the ball last could be the the one who wins. Bar none this is looking like a game with 60 + points. It is without a doubt a pick ‘em game.

Should be a classic!

Chip,

Put me down for a big DAWG win on this one. X and O wise, I think that Richt has an excellent road record in the SEC, the dawgs O-line will continue to improve along with TN’s defense giving up a lot of rushing yards. I also don’t think that TN’s special teams (punt and kick coverage are very good).

I think UGA’s pass defense against Ainge is a pick ‘em.

Unless UGA has a lot of drops, penalties, and turnovers, we should win this one by 10+.

I normally have a lot of respect for the TN team, but they just don’t look that good to me this year.

I think you absolutely right JB. Field position is key…more importantly for Tennessee in terms of not starting at mid-field. Our kickoff coverage has been subpar all year. Ainge starting with only half a field to play on could be disasterous for us.

Both teams will score. The team that wins will put up 7’s in the endzone. As far as defense, I think if UGA follows the ‘bend but don’t break’ philosophy we should be able to force Tennessee into kicking field goals. We all know that Ainge is going to throw passes and move the ball. Redzone Offense and Redzone Defense. It’s a toss up.

I like our running game outlasting UT’s offense against our defense. I expect a high scoring game with the Dawgs coming out on top by 6 or so. Our secondary is very young, but, how much longer can we use our youth as an excuse? Our whole team may be young, but, they are some of the best young or old athelets in the country. Our OL is still a little suspect, however, they have proven to be better than expected. I will take Stafford over Ainge all day long and I will definately take our running game over just about anyone any day of the week. We should be in for an exciting game tomorrow. GO DAWGS!!!

I read an article today about TX and FL leading the nation in arrests. FL has 9 and TX has 7. It was in the Denver Post.

Interesting that this is one of the worst TX teams in a while in that they struggled against a few lesser opponents and then got crushed by KS State last week. The Long Horn arrests are things like battery and burglalry with a few DUI’s sprinkled in as well.

FL’s arrests including the team captain this past week including things like drugs, guns, and burglary. FL is also THE MOST penalized team in the SEC this year.

One has to think that the off field issues are a syptmom of an overall lack of discipline in these programs this past year.

TX has had top 5 recruiting classes each year, as has FL… but I expect TX to lose 3 games this year and I actually expect the same from FL.

Before you label me a hypocrite because of the rash of UGA suspensions this year…Here is the key difference in my opinion:

All the UGA off field problems were for drinking (without driving) and simple traffic violations (passing on the right and going down a one way street the wrong way both ironically on mopeds? Pretty tame stuff that was met with serious disciplinary charges by the team and school.

I believe there is a huge difference between assault, drug charges, and robbery vs. open container and going down a one way street on a moped (though that can be dangerous for the moped rider).

I believe the off field issues for FL and TX are catching up with these teams on the field.

I expect an LSU win Sat. night, partly due to FL’s lack of discipline, but also due to their lack of diversity in the offense against a tough LSU D. One would have to think that LSU will be ready for the Tebow draw plays.

Everyone keeps harping on what happened last year. Yes they beat us and hung 51 on us, but we gave it to them. As far as the halftime lead and losing it, if you’ll recall the “Great Joe T” through a pass to the wrong team that got the ball rolling for the Vols to get the momentum from us. And correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t UT score right before halftime to make it a 10 point lead? Needless to say, you can’t compare last year to this year because we went up there in 2003 and throttled them 41-14 only to have them come to Sanford the next year and take us down. Dawgs in a rout…

I hope we win the toss, TAKE THE BALL and score right off. THAT shuts up the crowd, gives our young OL confidence and fires up our D. We can NOT let them jump out 14-0. You can’t hear yourself think in that place. We play pretty good on the road and when the other team is a NAME team, plus we run the ball pretty damn good and we can PASS. vols have their hands full.

Any time you play at UT is cause for concern. The UGA running game is critical; however, Stafford has to play consistently and avoid making the bad throw. A few bad decisions, an interception or two and we’re in deep trouble. Stafford’s inconsistency killed us at S. Carolina. If he hits 55% of his passes, we win that game. If he learns to throw the med/long ball with any level of accuracy, we win the game. He’s good, but he’s still a sophomore.

I’m not sure our play calling is all that predictable, though I agree that there were times we were running the ball late in games and started to throw and get away from what was working.

We had a lot of screens against SC and Okie State, but we are relying a little less on those now.

We are running the ball with different backs and it is hard to key on any one receiver. Any one of five guys can have a 5 catch game (a TE, Bailey, Mo Mass, Mikey, Moore) even Wilson or a back could have a 3-4 catch game.

So, I just don’t think we are as predictable to game plan against for an opponents Defense. I look for UGA to go away from the screens for the most part in the first quarter, unless it is a 3rd and long and we are expecting a blitz.

Am I the only one who saw “fork in the road” and then thought “spoon” and then thought “Stafford”? If Bobo and Stafford come out aggressive and carve up Tennessee’s D (like at Bama), then it does take the crowd out of it and does keep momentum on UGA’s side. If UT does not sell out against the run it will totally shock me. Throw away from Eric Berry. I’ll go contrarian again (and assume low scoring) and say UGA 13 - UT 9.

By GFan

October 5, 2007 3:27 PM | Link to this

Chip, I agree that it’s a pretty even matchup. Tennessee is still a 2pt favorite I believe. In the Cal & Florida games, UT didn’t look to have the athletes/speed in its front 7 on D’ that it used to, which should be an advantage for Georgia’s offense w/ its running game. However, the Vols have by far the best passing game that UGA has faced, including better than the Alabama team that UGA barely beat. Because Tennessee doesn’t have much of a running game & Georgia has a better D’, I believe UGA has a bigger offensive advantage than UT. EDGE: Georgia

By ChampDawg

I, of course, hope UGA wins. But this is not the team of the past 3 years on offense or defense. This game worries me because the DAWGS have been so inconsistent but that’s what you get with a young team. Many will disagree with me, but Stafford still fails to impress under pressure. The game squarely depends on the OL. If we can sucessfully run the ball and therefore open up the passing game, I think we have a chance to win in a real high scoring shoot-out. I say high scoring because I don’t think our defense is yet up to the task- particularly the secondary. If we can run the ball and Stafford doesn’t make dumb mistakes like he’s prone to do, we have a chance to win.

Chip:

The teams look to be fairly evenly matched … on paper. That being said, these games generally are decided by three factors.

Execution - yards on 1st down, 3rd down efficiency. Mistakes - turnovers, penalties, dropped passes. Field Position - sepcial teams play and turnovers are the key here.

I’m guessing the game will be within a touchdown when the 4th quarter begins. The winner will be the team that is able to keep the other team out of the end zone in the 4th quarter.

A make or break game for both teams!

I think UT won’t be able to handle the Dawgs rushing attack. That is what it will boil down to. Stafford is better than Ainge, but the Dawgs secondary is a bit suspect. So Ainge should have a pretty good game. Stafford will too and the droped passes will not be as bad this weekend. We won’t see as many screen passes as in the past few games. The Dawgs O line should have it’s act together enough to open some holes and give Stafford some time. Call it even between those two. Richt and Bobo won’t unleash a pass heavy game plan. That being said, UGA’s dynamic duo(Moreno and Brown) will control the outcome with just a good or great game. UGA will have the ball longer and will wear down UT’s defense. That will keep UT’s D off kilter and will allow Stafford to pick ‘em apart for a good game. UGA Rushing 230 yards total 3 td’s UGA Passing 190 yards total 1 td UT Rushing 125 yards total 1 td UT passing 175 yards total 1 td UGA Field goals 2 UT Field goals 3 Turnovers UGA 1 UT 2

My keys to a UGA victory:

1.) In order for the dawgs to win, Stafford and the receivers will have to beat the UT defense through the air. UT has had two weeks to key in on our running game so they will be ready to stop it at all costs. I predict that the variety of screens GA runs will be very important in this game to offset the blitzing of UT.

2) The D linemen must pressure Ainge otherwise he will pick apart a somewhat suspect GA secondary (hopefully CWM won’t stay in a soft zone the whole game either).

Dawgs win by 6 in a back and forth game.

GO DAWGS!!!

Until I watched the Kentucky-SC game last night, I didn’t know what to think about tomorrow’s game. Our defense gave up way too many yards last week. Not a lot of points, but way too many yards. Then, last night, I had an epiphany…that match-up was eerily similar to ours this weekend. Great passing attack (Kentucky/TN) against strong running attack (SC/UGA). Small, fast defense (SC/UGA) against relatively stable offensive line and experienced quarterback(KY/TN). And all of a sudden I didn’t feel so bad. It was clear to me that if Kentucky had played at the same level as we did against Ole Miss. They would have won. Even with SC’s great defense, Kentucky would have won if their quarterback and running back had played even a little bit better. The offensive line gave both of them enough time to pick SC apart, but neither did their jobs. The quarterback was inaccurate and the running back was slow to the hole.

Our guys are better than that. Sure, Stafford has thrown some really suspect passes in the first five games, but he also knows how to improvise if the protection breaks down. Woodson didn’t do that last night and he got creamed…several times. And we certainly have the advantage at the running back position. It’s like CMR said this week, even though our young line didn’t always make the blocks, our running backs made yards because they are fast and really good decision makers. They hit the hole as soon as it opened up, followed the WR blocks down field and turned on the jets. Kentucky’s back lost a lot of yards and didn’t make several first downs that could have kept drives alive.

So okay, our defense may not get to Ainge as much as we’d like and our secondary is making way to many tackles right now. But if our offense works as well as I think it will against a very shaky TN defense, we won’t have to worry about it. Our defense will be sitting on the sidelines resting while we play ball control football.

Georgia 20, Tenn. 17. Based on clock control with Dawgs’ running game.

The hostile stadiums at Tenn, Ala, S.C., Fla, LSU, etc., have me wondering what can be done to jack up the volume at Sanford. (I’m sorry if I’m on the wrong thread-please redirect me if you will).

I’ve heard that the way Sanford is designed with seats in the center pulling away from the field is the cause of decibel loss there. How about some aluminum wing-like structures jutting out from the top decks to capture the roar of the crowd and keep it down on the field? Surely there’s some architectural feature that would help. Am I nuts?

Or maybe everyone should just yell louder. :)

I’m an Auburn grad, so I have no dog (no pun intended) in this fight.

I think Tennessee is getting more credit than they deserve. They played two good teams and gave up 104 points in those two games, while only scoring 51. Not good. Not good at all. In their other two (against a better than you think Arkansas State and a horrible Southern Miss) they gave up 46 points. Not good at all. UT has no defense to speak of, especially stopping the run. I think Georgia moves the ball at will. (If I were CMR, I’d take the ball on the opening kick, if you win the toss.) March down the field and shut the 110,000 up, and the field is yours. Auburn went up there in 2004, scored quick and we ardly heard Rocky Top at all.

I think Georgia wins easier than most here think. I’ve got UGA 31, UT 14.

I agree that this is a very even game going in. Anytime you are facing a senior QB at home, especially one as good as Ainge, you’ve got your work cut out. What concerns me most is that we’ve played two physical games back to back and TN had last week off and played Ark. State before that. So TN should be fresher and they have had plenty of time to game plan and plug the holes that showed up vs. Cal and UF.

The question we need to answer is whether the talent gap that showed itself over the last several years has shrunk because of our young OL and young secondary. If not, we should win, perhaps easily. If the gap has in fact shrunk then we’ve got a fight on our hands.

My guess is that both teams play this game tight. I would expect a lot of running from both teams as I think both have a reason to fear a shoot-out. TN doesn’t want their D out there all day and we don’t want Ainge throwing it all over the place so we may actually ‘force’ TN into running situations with our looks.

Therefore, I would expect that TO’s and special teams will be the big differnce. Whoever gives up the easy points will lose.

With respect to Fulmer, I think if he wins Sat. he is fine for now, but if he loses and finishes perhaps as low as 5th in the east, I think that TN has every reason to consider going in a different direction. The reason is this: TN has no in state talent. They have to recruit from all over to be competitive in the East. Once there is that chink in the armor, as we have seen, the talent dwindles. And I don’t feel sorry for Fulmer. He did this to himself by taking talent over character and by the time he started doing anything about it, it was too late. While I’d love to see them keep him, I can see a reason to make a move. Such a move would not in my opinion suggest that he has done a bad job. He really had a very, very good run for a long time, but I think once you get knocked off the mountain it is real difficult to get back on top. Richt is in a similar situation. If we won 7, 8, 9 games over the next three years (we won’t, I assure you), the talent will dwindle and we’ll be fighting to be in the top-3 in the East. With SS in Columbia, and Kentucky playing well, the ‘good ol days’ of being mediocre and third isn’t in the offing anymore. Mediocre gets you just ahead of Vandy in 5th. Its a tough business, but there is no time to wait around because if you do, you’ll just die a long slow miserable death until you have no choice but to make a change. If you aren’t moving forward or holding steady at or near the top, you are gonna backslide in a hurry in this league.

Now let’s Go Dawgs and put Phat Phil out of his misery!!!

Whoever has fewer turnovers wins, it’s that close.

If UT loses, Fulmer is gone at seasons end regardless of how he finishes. The NC in 98 bought him a pass on the 5-6 season but he’s used his mully. He has to win the SEC east this year to save his job which means winning 8 in a row. Fat chance. Been a PF supporter for years but the energy is gone. Should anyone be happy with 8-4? Is that what UGA fans want…I think not.

Chip, With all the talk about Tenn. having the lack of a run defense, something tells me they step it up tomorrow. I believe Stafford & the receiving corps need to deliver big and pick up the slack. He needs to have a stellar game.

On defense, we absolutely have to put pressure on Ainge, even if it means giving up big yards at times. Our DB’s need to play above their heads too.

ICE,

I agree that its always a good idea to blitz a senior QB at home. Show him some single coverage on the outside with no safety help. I’ve seen that work before. Remember when LSU came to Athens in ‘04 and blitzed all day and gave us single coverage? It worked great for them. They only gave up 45. If they would’ve scored 46 they would have won. Brilliant idea ICE, let’s do your plan.

Are you the same guy who suggested that we blitz Bama like Ark did? Yeah, they only gave up 40 plus too.

If people keep this blitzing crap up my haeds gonna explode. Please, please stop it!! The idea isn’t that they not gain a yard or complete a pass, the name of the game is that they score less points than we do. We beat Ole Miss by 28. What, is that not good enough?

It was once said that if you listen to the fans it won’t be long before you are sitting with them. God help us if Martinez missed that lesson and listens to people like you.

All you UGA fans saying you’d take Stafford over Ainge are nuts. Who leads the SEC in passing and who connected on one good pass in overtime to beat the tide? No way Stafford throws for more yards/TD’s than Ainge. However, that won’t dictate who wins the game on Sat. The key is how TN’s D fairs against GA’s run game. Whoever wins that battle wins the game plain and simple…assuming the special teams and turnover stats are equal.

Week after week, CMR and Bobo have said that we would go down field with the ball and then in the game we don’t do it. We’ll throw the ball deep a couple of times. Stafford has over thrown a couple of times and we wonder why so we blames him. Not many of each but still 7 TDs and 3 pics. It is time to have the “OL” pull an Ala. and carry their part of the load. As several of you have said, they’ve had 2 weeks to game plan and I can’t believe that they won’t be ready to stop the screen passes and run by using an 8 man front but it will be disguised trying to confuse Stafford. Under pressure he’s done a good job so the Vols won’t scare this kid. If we come out throwing and CONTINUE TO DO SO WE’LL WIN 30-24. IF WE PULL AN ALA. AND SWITCH FROM THROWING TO RUNNING WE’LL LOSE. Throw to set up our running backs. Pressure of some type on Ainge is a must. He’ll still get some points. Our kick coverage has me scared because we use that darn directional kick and then don’t tackle. I wasn’t kidding earlier when I said that may be they’ll put Reshad Jones on Ainge. A couple of real hits and Ainge will start dancing, Stafford won’t. Brown and Moreno all purpose yards will average 125 each and Stafford will throw for 250. Dawg win.

I don’t see how this is an even matchup. Tennessee is getting way too much credit for getting its doors blown off by some top teams. It would be one thing if Tennessee had actually competed in those games, but they didn’t. They are a horrible team. Dead last in the SEC in scoring D. Second to last in the SEC in total D. Second to last in the SEC in rushing offense. Let’s see, no defense and no running game. What does that get you in the SEC? It gets you an awesome New Year’s eve because you sure as hell won’t be good enough to play football in January. ‘07 Tennessee is another meltdown waiting to happen. Georgia BIG.

Pi and others state the offense hasn’t shown diversity. The one thing lacking has been the deep ball.I think we’re all a little itchy to see a bomb or two and it would loosen and stretch defenses.Accept for the long stuff we’ve been diverse though, using a good variety of passing routes and running plays.

This game will turn on mistakes. But not just who makes the most because based on what I’ve seen of both teams they are likely to match each other mistake for mistake. The difference will be who capitalizes on the others mistakes.

Another thing to keep in mind will be which team can put up 7 when they get close and which team settles for fieldgoals. 3’s represent missed opportunities. Mistakes and missed opportunities will make the difference because these teams are relatively equal from talent perspective.

Everyone and their brother knows Georgia is going to run the ball straight down the throats of TN this game… which is exactly why I expect Stafford and MoMass to step up and have a huge game. I think the passing game puts us ahead by three at half-time and the running game runs like crazy in the second half. All the motivation and psychology is out the window 5 minutes into the game. Dawgs win and 50 more Tennessee siblings get married over the weekend. Go Dawgs!

uga will win if it controls the clock and doesn’t make mistakes.i look for an eight man line or some type of run blitz from ut.i would like to see some deep balls thrown off play action from the power I formation, especially on first down early.maximum protection with brown, sutherland and a tight end.that should hold the d long enough for the wr to clear, play action should make young berry stop and think.if stafford throws the ball with enough loft our wr should be able to run under it.could be six quickly,or at least stretch the d enough to give our backs a little running room.i think fulmer will stay as long as he wants,as i hear there is no buyout clause in his contract.should ut beat uga i still see three losses possible for them in the sec, bama and certainly usc are capable of beating ut.there is bad blood between ut and both teams,so both will be rivalry games for ut.if ut goes 8-4 or worse, loses to bama and loses another bowl game i think phil will be asked to resign by the ut potentates.i think he would have too much pride to stay without support from his bosses.

IMO its our O line vs their defense. They must open some holes for the dynamic duo and protect Stafford long enough that he can plant the front foot and throw.

The Dawgs defense must get after Ainge. and the linebackers need to play smart and not over execute, otherwise TN will kill us with those little 10 yd dump passes over the middle.

Vols can’t stop the run. Bobo should attack with the 3-headed monster Brown/Moreno/Lumpkin with just enough passing to keep ‘em honest. That keeps Ainge on the sideline where he is harmless. Dawgs’ D should blitz early & often but that’s not Martinez’ style. I see this one still being up for grabs in the 4th qtr. Dawgs win when Coutu kicks their a$$ with a hobnail boot.

At some point this season our defense has got to create turnovers. UT had to replace 4 OL so it is important that we creat some pressure on Ainge and create some fumble or Int’s. Big game and the SEC is turning back to us if we can just keep winning!

Lowcountry Bulldawg, the really good news it that we havent been turning it over either. It’s the differential that matters I think. But yes, it is oddly low so far this year. Would have to be personel IMO since the defence has created almost the same numbers of TO over the past many yrs. (with the exception of 2002). Tommorow would be a good time to go up about 3 in that TO margin.

Get ready for a carbon copy of last weeks game, but Tennessee will keep it closer because of a home game and Ainges’ throwing ability. Georgia will win because of special teams, clock/ ball control, and play action passing. Brandon Southerland will play a big part out of the backfield. Stafford will have to be smart with the football and get off his back foot. Mo Mass has been relatively quiet and likely has been waiting for an opportunity to bust loose.

As for Fulmer, if Georgia has something to do with his departure then so be it. The way I remember it, he drug Johnny Majors under the bus to get the job in the first place, and sold Bama down the road to get ahead. As for the latter, I realize that he isn’t the only one who practices that sort of thing in the SEC, but “What goes around comes around.”

Phil doesn’t seem to have a lot of back bone while blaming coaches, players, and referees for losses. Has a tough time looking in the mirror. I hope he stays because CMR has a pretty good record against him.

If UT loses it’ll start looking pretty dismal for Phil. If I was a UT fan I’d be ready to see him go. Peyton Manning was the best thing to happen to Fulmer. But as good as he was, UT won the NC with Tee Martin, and he turned out to leave a ” black eye” on that achievement.

Georgia plays well on the road. Georgia has gotten better every week. Georgia needs to score early to put the Vols on their back and shake their confidence.

Tennessee has had two weeks to prepare whick is an advantage. The Vols needed the break to re-group. Phillip Fulmer is in a must-win situation which increases their chances of winning.

Georgia will score some points. The question is can the Georgia defensive backs stop the Vols Wide receivers? Or can the GA line get enough pressure on Ainge to cause problems? If they do, Georgia Wins.

These two teams are equal on a talent level… both have underachieved in recent years. It is inconceivable that Fulmer is even rumored to be in trouble… who in the history of the school brought them to such prominence? It is indicative of the “live in the moment” reality that plagues college football. As a Georgia fan, I hope they do fire Fulmer so they can go back to the mediocrity they so enjoyed before he arrived. How many national championships did Shug Jordan win? As far as who will prevail tomorrow, Heaven only knows. These are two also-rans who are looking to define themselves… The winner earns the right to maybe be a factor in the big picture. There are too many variables for anyone to honestly predict this game. I live and breathe Ga. football, but I know that the Vols are going to bring their best game. Well, first of all, a UT win makes me sick for a week and irritated for a year. Three wins out of the last four games, and I can call in to the Mark Richt show Monday night and let him know Tennessee OWNS Georgia again, and casually mention our 0-6 record versus SEC East teams spanning two seasons. This would be fact, not an irrational statement. Personally, that would mean Richt would be 1-3 last 4 vs UT and 1-3 last 4 vs Florida….didn’t we get rid of Jim Donnan on account of that?! You can count on one thing. If UGA loses this game, and then loses another game unexpectedly, and then loses once again to Florida, I SERIOUSLY believe Mark Richt will be in trouble unless he wins the SEC East in 2008. Sounds impossible, but just check back here if we lose the game. This is a MUST WIN for both teams, and I don’t want to think how ugly it will be reading about how we lost to a team that lost to Florida 59 to 20 and was DISMANTLED by California. Simply put, NO EXCUSES for Richt, Bobo and Martinez if we lose to the worst UT team in the last 15 years (yes, worse than 2005).

Johnny Majors was walking to the grand colisieum on the river Tennesse when he saw Phat Phil and some other non-distinguished assistant coaches walking up to him. What can it be now, thought the head coach for life. I have given them championships, I have given them play schemes I have read them bedtime stories of General Neyland, what do they want now?

All of a sudden the assistant coaches gathered around the August Majors and flung verbal knives into him. Reeling Caesar Majors reached out to Phat Philius. And Phat Philius, stuck in the verbal knife and twisted. Caesar Majors saw his entire career flow out of his body and join the twisting currents of his beloved Tennessee. His last gasp before he went to the great gridiron in the sky was, Et Tu Phil.

In fact we won one game for sure using this tactic. 1st blush, I think that most Dawg fans remember Stafford going deep and completing passes but what else did we use in that game? Stafford running! he’d done a little during the season but in that game they turned him loose to git on his hoss and ride. Now they don’t want him to get hurt so he goes down before he’ll take off but in a few key situations he’s see the chance would they give him the OK to audible into the QB draw. He’s proven he knows how to use the play so what if?

Buck, why do I get the feeling that this may be a break out game of the season for Stafford? These are strange times we live in and I have a feeling that last weekends shake up won’t be the last one this year. Florida kicked Tennessee’s a$$ but that Cal game was closer than the score. It was still up for grabs in the 4th quarter. Tennessee ain’t great and we have more talent, but they are better than Bama, Ole Miss and the GameDicks. We need to play well to win. The formula is simple.
Blocking + Tackling = Victory. GO DAWGS!

After that loss last year, every time I see that ugly Tennessee Orange I know something ain’t right in the world. There’s something missing. It’s been nagging me all year long, and after reading Obnoxious Orange’s comments, I just figured out what it is. It’s Justice! After we gave that game away in the second half last year, the Dawgs needs Justice. The coaches know it, the team knows it, Bulldog Nation knows it — and come Saturday at kick-off, we’re going to see Justice done!

One things for sure, none of us know a whole hell of a lot about the final score of UT-GA. But we do know it is the journey that counts. Little things determine games, watch the respective offensive line play the first quarter and you’ll have a great insight. If Ainge has time to throw, expect to hear “Rocky Top” quite a bit. If Ga has success running, “Glory, Glory” will ring out. Its TIME TO DO IT!! HAVE A GREAT DAY!!

TB or not TB. That is the question. Whether it is nobler for Stafford with his arm to sling the arrows to Mo Mass and cause the outrageous misfortunes of the Vols, or with one run, just end it.

Don’t say we gave last year’s game to them. Those “giveaways” were Tn. “takeaways”. The open date for Tennessee gives them a tremendous advantage. There is an extremely strong correlation with winning when the home team has a bye and the road team did not in the SEC. Not so much in the pros.

It’s in the same ballpark as in my day when I tried , as Sports Director, to have the money put into the year end budget to but a new camera to be used for Sports only at WECA in Tallahassee Fl. The station wasn’t part of a chain but was owned by one man and he needed the tax breaks at the end of every year. Thanks for pushing and getting what was needed. My writing was and is terrible and that’s why I ad libbed. Forced me to make the point with in the time for Sports…….BTW, last count I have for true freshman was 7 playing this season. I missed my guess because I said 10 would play. When you get a chance would you check and see what the number was or is. Confusing? I just read a quote from Bobo that he’s still working with Stafford on being consistent with his footwork and trusting his protection. Sounds good to me…Hold on just a second. Hasn’t CMR been talking about how much the QB has help carry that same “OL”? OK, Matthew, concentrate because the Coach has told you to play as a QB should…..BTW, if you want to get a little negative shot at Stafford you “haters”, be sure to read Josh Kendall’s columns in the Macon Telegraph or on dawgpost.com(cost)He’s always good for a dart at the QB.

What’s that coming down the track? It’s the Bulldawg Express in Red and Black! Brown and Moreno, and maybe even Lumpkin too will run wild today, with the Dawgs getting nearly 300 yards on the ground. Trip will make some key catches and Stafford will hit a receiver long for a TD. Our “D” will play more than well enough for a win and our boys put Tennessee away by at least 14 points as we continue to grow and mature as a team. I’ll be thinking about all you delirious Dawg fans as we pound the Vols with our running game but won’t be able to personally enjoy the experience in real-time as duty calls me to sacrifice that pleasure in favor of my daughter’s wedding. Ms. 59 says no tv today even though the reception hall has a big screen. So it’s a complete sports blackout today until I get back to the Tivo tonight. Even though I’ll be as nervous as long tailed kitty in a romm full of rockers I think at the end of the day it’ll be another road win for CMR! GO DAWGS! SIC EM!

My God almighty, did you see what he did! David Greene just straightened up and we snuck the fullback over! Haynes is keeping the ball! Haynes is come running all the way across to the bench. Could go one of two ways. If we run the ball, and are able to use play action on offense, we win. That gives the defense the rest it needs, and the motivation to get after Ainge. If they show up, the defensive speed we have is impressive.

If UT coming off of a bye week really shuts down the run, I do not like our chances. Our defense will have a hard time if the Time of Possession is in the Orange favor. That same motivation will not be there.

Just my two cents. It comes down to the running game! Go Dawgs.

By brokebackvol

October 6, 2007 11:25 AM | Link to this

Honestly, it probably is going to come down to whether or not Fulmer and his staff have been able to teach the Volunteer Defense how to successfully tackle during this off week. UT has a pretty stable passing offense, and can move the ball. If the Vols can open some holes for their RBs (and they don’t get ‘fumble-itis’) then it could be a pretty close and exciting game.

If the Vols didn’t use their time wisely and fix their problems, then Georgia in a walk (if the Dawgs don’t make too many costly mistakes and beat themselves.)

First five minutes of each half often determine alot, and the Dawgs had better beware cause this is a UT team looking to prove itself after losing to two top ten teams.

Bottom line, This is a statement game for the Dogs. The team needs to put it all together today and put a solid whipping on the Vols. We owe them from last year and we have a chance to get back into the top ten and possible Nat’l Championship hunt. The reason Big Phil, i’m being nice today, is on the hotseat is due to bad play by the Vols. We do not need to serve as the healing medicine that saves Phil’s job. I don’t care how big a game it is for Tenn, we should win big and put ourselves in the same league as USC and LSU. Go Dawgs, win big and make us proud.

Stafford must execute today and we will win. UT will try to stop the run and if we can have the passing game working we should win.

On D we have to blitz more today. If we only rush four all day and play zone coverage we will get beat. Ainge is good enough to beat us if we give him time.

Pressure Ainge, and throw and catch on O with a solid run effort and we destroy them. If not it will be a long day.

And why could we have not played like this before. See I said fire nobody, just asked a question.

Whoops another lighter fluid shot, you know after awhile they just taste like keorsene. I think I will mix some peppers or gunpowder with the lighter fluid.

3:26 left in the game, and Fulmer is already getting his Gatorade shower. That shows you how bad this games was. Dawgs showed no heart at all, a pathetic effort when it really counted. Losing is one thing, not even showing up in inexcusable!!!

Oh we showed up, we just did not play. Either that or they knew exactly what play we were going to run. Hard to say when I have seen one team so prepared and the other caught so flat.

Vols this is yours. Enjoy it, have fun, just do not forget about next week as we obviously have done.

Vols, you were much better, if someone says that the dawgs just beat themselves, send them to Cuz’s evil twin. I will shoot them down as fast as you shot us down; faster than doves on a baited field.

We are not number twelve, I think now we are number two. Well there is always the toilet bowl in Syracuse.

CMR, what happened to finish the drill? Win a couple of SEC titles and then nuffin… back to another more seasons of disappointment… I think I’m a flashback to Goff and Zier…

First of all, the 75 or 77 per cent winning record for Fulmer is deceptive. Most of the wins were in the 90’s, and his recent record, this decade, against ranked teams and decent competition is horrible, being below .500. Fulmer doesn’t have a .750 winning percentage this decade, overall. Fulmer might be a decent human being but he isn’t a football coach. He knows how to do public relations work, and kiss babies, but he has a highly exaggerated sense of ability, ability that was used up in the nineties. Fulmer is a very old 57. He is a 67 year old 57 year old. He has no charisma, no spark, no fire and is past his prime. Just watching him wrinkle up his face and talk reminds me of an auto mechanic being asked about brain surgery.

This blog string should be retitled as “Stick a fork in Georgia - she’s done!”

Quote from an AJC article: The Bulldogs “gave” Tennessee 411 yards. They “gave” quarterback Erik Ainge enough time to go 17-of-22 for 165 yards. They “gave” clear lanes for the Vols to rush for 190 yards. They “gave” up a blocked punt. They “gave” up a 56-yard trick-play touchdown.

Just like a Doggie fan not to accept the truth. TN TOOK anything it wanted. It wasn’t given. TN manhandled the dawgs like Bill Clinton handled Interns. Read between the lines!
