UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Seeing game from different angle
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greetings from Bogart, Ga.! That’s right. I’m not Tuscaloosa. I’ve been grounded. Well, actually I was ordered to stay home in bed this weekend. I started to get a cold last weekend and it kept getting worse to the point I could not this past Wednesday. Went to see my doctor and he was afraid I might have pneumonia. Tests and x-rays were negative but he did determine I had bronchitis. He prescribed drugs, rest and, that’s right, no driving to Tuscaloosa this weekend.
Just the fact I’m chiming in here today should let you know I’m feeling markedly better, thank you. In a way I feel like I’ve landed on another planet or something (and it’s not the drugs, I promise). This is the first college football Saturday I haven’t been working since 1997 and you have to go back to 1988 before that. So it’s a bid odd.
Obviously I’d rather be in Alabama where the action is tonight but it has been somewhat refreshing and enlightening to sit (or in my case, lay) at home and watch all the games on television. Usually, we just get occasionally glances at the television throughout the day when we’re wroking a game. And in the case of a prime-time night game, we really see almost nothing of the telecast, except for the occasional instant replay. And because of deadlines and everything we have to write, we probably don’t get to watch games as close as many of you at home late in the second half as we feverishly try to pound out our copy for you. Hopefully it all makes sense by the time it reaches your doorstep — or your laptop.
Anyway, I decided I felt good enough to maybe throw together a blog here tonight and keep it going throughout the game (that is, if anybody out there peers in and see there’s something going on). I’m gonna try to listen to Scott Howard call the game some, too. So we can weigh in about that as the night goes on.
If it all gets to be too much, I’ll let you know and gracefully bow out. But you guys stuck at home like me stay with it and we’ll carry this thing on into Monday morrning. Hopefully I’ll be back to feeling like myself by then.
OK. Florida wins, LSU wins. What about your Dogs?

It has to be ‘84, right? Wasn’t that the last year, or was it later?
I’m not making any predictions, but this is the game in which we’re going to find out what kind of team we have.
Wow… could there be a worse idea in the world than have someone like 50 Cent rapping in an ESPN promo for the game? I mean, I don’t know about y’all, but when I think college football in the SEC, OF COURSE I think about 50 Cent.
Stupid.

And Chip, I’ll be here all night. But I don’t know if that’s comforting to you or not.
Why is Matthew Stafford and our wideouts ALWAYS out of synch on long passes, Chip?
Other teams don’t seem to have these issues.

I AM SICK OF SEEING THOMAS BROWN GETTING A YARD PER CARRY AND UNABLE TO BREAK TACKLES!!!
On ESPN.com and SI.com both said Moreno needs to be the guy because Brown is a third down back at best. That Coach Richt needs to ensure that Moreno gets 25 carries a game.
WHY THE HELL CAN’T BALL AND COACH RICHT SEE WHAT WE ALL SEE!?!
Frustrating.
In other news, Dawgs score on 3rd Down on a screen to Brown.
See… third down back for his blocking and his catching. He has a place on this team, and it’s not on 1st or 2nd down. I think back to all of those good NY Giant teams in the 90’s (my Dad is a G-man Fan). Dave Meggett was an extremely important part of that team. Hampton was the 1st and 2nd down guy, and Meggett was the 3rd down guy.
That’s the set up we should have with the Dawgs.

NASCAR, did you see anything you liked on Georgia’s drive? …
Perfect start for Dogs so far. That stadium is considerably quieter now… .

By the way, in case you didn’t see it yet, I spoke to Larry Munson on the phone. Kind of sad actually. He was home by himself watching the game on TV and listening to the radio. No fishing, no cabin on the lake. He was kind of bummed, as you might imagine… .
I could get used to this, working while supine!

Does anyone else think (besides me) that because of our weaknesses in blocking straight up with a young line (Moreno gets stuffed behind the line by 4 Bama guys who blow through the blocks) that it might be a good idea to run some of the old Joe Gibbs Counter-Trey running plays?
Bad call by Bobo to run it on 2nd and 12.

I see lots I like, Chip, except for the INT, I’ve seen a lot a like.
I just think, and I’m not alone in this opinion if you read the national media, that Moreno should be the guy right now, and as far as total performance on the field, he’s been far and away the better back.
I’m really liking the defense right now. I like Asher Allen more than Evans. Wilson looks confused (why does he have a serial killer type name, anyway… why not just John Wilson… I mean, if his name was Billy Bob, it would make sense, but John Parker… I don’t get it)

I’ll have to tell you, I don’t usually listen to radio broadcasts during the games because I have so much else to do, but I like what I’m hearing so far. Obviously Scott Howard is going to give you a lot more accurate than Munson did, or at least does here late in his career. But I’m really impressed with Eric Zeier. Really bringing a lot of insight to that color position. And a lot more excitement and energy than I expected. I guess the ultimate test will be if and when Georgia executes one of those memorable plays.

Nice half for Georgia. Pretty solid. Chandler’s drop hurt… . I think Georgia is playing for a deep the ball in the second half. They’ve been really sticking with the run despite Bama playing eight and nine in the box. Think they’re just biding their time before trying to hit another one… . Defense really needs to stuff the Tide to start the second half… .
Perhaps warm chai tea at the half, NASCAR.

thanks for doing this chip. though maybe the drugs have a bit of effect seeing the typos in the original post. lol the defense played very well in the first half. the offense had its moments. i really thought we’d do a better job on the ground then we have. we started to pick it up near the end of the half.

Chip… thanks man, I’m glad you’re looking out for me. I’m thinking more along the like of some Chamomile. That’ll calm me down a bit.
Verminator, I contend that if Coach didn’t shut down the dadgum offense and actually played a little football with 2:18 to play, that Wynn wouldn’t have been in that position.
Just like if Bobby Cox had left in Mike Bielecki who was killing the Yankees, then Wohlers would have never been in position to throw the slider.
Cause and effect. Gutless coaching begats momentum changing drives or scores like that Bama fieldgoal. Call it what you want, but I call it gutless.
Better watch out, Bama is going to come out psyched up knowing they should be shut out right now but aren’t. I hope to God we can hold this game together.

Oh, and Buck, since the AJC stupidly doesn’t have a blog which caters to our second sports love, let me take a minute to ask you: Are you worried about our boy, #24? Are you hoping for a last place finish from that POS #48 as much as I am. And man, how weird is it going to be next year watching #20 driving a Toyota? People can’t get mad driving Toyotas. Soccer moms drive Toyotas. What do you think about the new #88 with Mountain Dew? To me, #88 is still Jarrett, although he’s #44 now. I hope Junior does #88 proud. Also, I was kind of hoping that they would have gotten a number for him that had no 8 in it, so all those rednecks would have to sell their trailers for the laser removal surgery. Hah!

Buck-
I agree with Chip, I think we were setting them up for some post, stop and go routes for the 2nd half. Don’t take for granted that we just went into their house and pretty much shut them down, with a pretty hostile crowd. Saban was doing a good job of mixing Stafford up by changing up his defensive look til just before the snap. We need to quit worrying so much about what they are doing and do OUR thing, play OUR game. I like the slants across the middle, Chandler dropped that one, but we don’t need to stop because of a dropped ball. On the run, it seems like the toss sweep with Southerland lead blocking is there if we’d run it. Our running game seems to be too much of running it right into the teeth of their defense. All that being said, we are controling the game and need to come out with more of the same. Our defense is real close to a big interception or two. I like the pressure we are putting on John Boy Parker Billy Bob Slim what’s his name.

I don’t like defense burning timeout right there. We will need that later. Stafford just cannot complete a long pass. I think the WR drops come from complete surprise that Stafford hit them in stride, they don’t know how to react to that. Our WR are so used to dropping to their knees or reaching back to catch balls.
By the way NASCAR… it’s not gutless to try to run the ball deep in our own field. The way Stafford is throwing picks, a turnover that deep in our own territory would absolutely kill us.

Knowshon brings that extra bit of effort that Brown seems to lack. I’m not calling T out for a lack of effort, I believe he’s a high effort guy.
But that screen on 3rd and 7 that Knowshon barely pulled in, stumblin and rumblin, and then stopped 2 yards short, and STILL managed to get the first down…
He’s more special. I think that’s the only way to say it. He’s special, in the way that Harvin is special. Or Cal’s Jackson is special.
Knowshon is just special. Garrison was special, too. But Knowshon has better coaches than Garrison did, with all apologies to Coach Goff, who is a great, stand-up guy who led us to our most surprising SEC title in 1976. Can we say it any better than that?

Absolutely no excuse for not having Moreno in the backfield after Bammer got their field goal. This may be the first time in the history of football that a player’s ability to rehab so well after acl surgery ends up hurting his team. I love T Brown and his DGD heart, but Moreno should be our #1 back right now, especially after the way he has played tonight.

OVERTIME!!!!
This game reminds me of Georgia at LSU in 2003 whenh Billy bennett missed three field goals. Great kicker, bad day. and the Dogs have largely outplayed Bama in this game. Just haven’t made the crucial plays at critical times… . Coutu’s a good one and those are tough circumstances, including wind and field condition in addition to situation… .
So, generally, you like overtime on the road if you’re the visiting team. Let’s see what happens.

The GOOD
WILLIE MARTINEZ!!!
The TD in overtime.
Moreno and Brown running for tough yards.
THE O-LINE WAS MAN ENOUGH, BABY!!!
The defense, for the most part, was doing well all night even in being put into two tough spots by Stafford.
The BAD
The offensive playcalling after the first series was just crap. We went conservative.
Matt Stafford’s passing tonight was again, very hit or miss. Not good at all for the most talented QB that Richt’s coached.
Coutou only hitting 50% of his field goals. I know he was good, but he’s better than that.
The UGLY
Two horrendous, and yes Chip, STUPID penelties that kept Bama drives alive which led to 10 points.
Tripp Chandler’s night until his first and only catch of the night.
The decision to shut down the offense with 2:18 left in the first half.
The decision to shut downthe offense in the fourth quarter.
The decision to leave Moreno on the bench on our second to last drive.
A wins a win, but Coaches Richt and Bobo made it harder than it should have been.
Whew… I’m emotionally drained right now.

OK, that one’s in the books. I’ll tell you what, Mark Richt gets questioned here and second-guessed a lot, but his road record improves to 23-3 at Georgia. That obviously does not include neutral sites such as Jacksonville or bowl games. But that’s dang impressive no matter how you slice it up… .
Biggest thing tonight was Georgia did this with the Bama Nation at its peak and with its offensive line in really bad shape. Starting guard Scott Haverkamp got hurt on Tuesday and didn’t make the trip and true freshman Clint Boling, who replaced him in the game, also was hurt in practice this week and missed two days… .
And probably the most important thing was Matthew Stafford getting a game-winning touchdown pass. Should do wonders for his confidence and for his teammates confidence in him. Still a little shaky on the accuracy. Final numbers: 19-of-36 for 224 with 2 TDs and 2 Ints… .
Moreno and Brown combined for 148 yards on 74 apiece in a night when Bama was bowed up to stop them… .
Georgia defense was stout except for that last drive… . Good start and great finish. A lot for Dog fans to be excited about.

Okay. I’ve had time to cool down. There hasn’t been a bigger Richt defender before tonight and maybe that’s why he’s 22-3 in enemy territory. I still hate that play not to lose style but can’t argue with the results. Can’t argue with the W I know. I just hope this will be a big confidence booster for our boys as they step into some big games coming up.

Willie Martinez once again proves that he’s a good defensive coordinator, and I’ve never maintained otherwise.
But I’d love to see the passion he showed tonight, rallying his guys for the overtime period… EVERY GAME.
But I won’t say that the offensive playcalling was good in the 4th quarter, it wasn’t.
I have a question Chip:
I know you have to remain objective, and I commend you for that.
But tell me that you didn’t come off your couch and yelled and screamed and woke up your baby on that last TD. Tell me that the Dawg inside your Grady Graduate body didn’t explode.

Michael G, you’re the idiot. It was a good win and MR should get some credit, but it shouldn’t have been like this. Brick Chandler…enough said already. Michael G, as for that last pass, great call, but it wasn’t pretty, like all others by Staff, it was short. He is simply OFF on 20+ passes EVERY TIME. After all this talk about what can get down field quicker, Goodman’s legs or Matt’s ball, Staff should NEVER under throw him. This has to improve. Look at the SCar game again, Staff was off all night on 20+. His touch passes are too lofted and soft, his firmer throws are simply not pinpoint beyond 15. Great win though, glad I don’t have to listen to more Finbaum’s Saban worship this week here in Montgomery, GO DAWGS!!! And how about them Reb’s, could’ve pulled it off against them reptiles.

If the second and fourth quarters were only 10 minutes long, Richt would be a good coach. They’re not and he’s not. His conservative play calling gave Alabama 3 points before the half and allowed the tie in the fourth. Richt is supposedly a great QB coach and Stafford is supposedly a potentially great QB? When’s Richt going to coach the kid up to his potential? No national championship with Richt. Never.

Yep, I’m just a big ole dummy, especially because I don’t buy into the Bobby Cox is a Genius worhip that Dave O’Brien perpetrates on his blog.
If knowing that the Braves would have won more than one World Series if they had any other manager than the choketastic Bobby Cox mismanaging some of the most talented baseball teams in history (1993 and 1996 come to mind) into the ground makes me an idiot, than thank GOD that I’m an idiot.

Hey Nick, by the time you get home you’ll have a brick through your front window and your house will be rolled. By tomorrow morning you will be able to log on to www.firenicksaban. Dawgs played with more fire when they were “unleashed” than Alabama did. We had some stupid penalties and some dumb mistakes. Just can’t make ‘em again. We Win! Go Dawgs!!

AWESOME WIN!!! Yeah, we should have won in regulation, and I don’t know where Knowshown was hidden that last drive before we punted, but oh, well. Great throw and catch w/Henderson.
SEC proved today it is the most competitive conference in the nation. Exhibits A and B: Kentucky and Ole Miss.
Had pneumonia last week, Carter, no fun. Take the drugs and get rest.
Oh, yeah, Tech lost again. Hee hee. What a great day.
Congrats, Dawgs. Not a perfect win, but we’ll take it.

Fellow Dawgs,
Great win tonight, the OL did a great job and deserves a slap on the back. Tripp Chandler needs to be set down especially with those 4 drops. Stafford continues to improve like I said before this team is going to be dangerous down the road as they get more experience. Knowshon Moreno should be starting and getting the majority of touches, he simply is the best and most dangerous RB and gives us the best chance to win. Lastly thanks Chip, great job as usual and I will pray for a speedy recovery. God night and God N Bless you all.

One last comment before bed.Every replay of the game winning throw looks better. When Stafford can make the ball do that on a fifty yard throw,by that I mean the timing, accurracy, touch and angle,he’ll be a great qb.The arm strength is already there, and then some.I have no doubt after seeing the improvement since the SC game that he’ll get there.I believe it will be soon,I can’t wait.Coming dear..night all.

Not to burst your bubble, but there are A LOT of schools who use that chant. It isn’t that Van Pelt knows Georgia football, just that he has been to a football game at some point in his life. Cool, it’s a big part of the Redcoat Tradition, but it is not solely our own.

There used to be a Coach that carried around a rolled up sheet of paper during game week. The paper had some plays that the Coach wanted to try to work in for the game that week. Plays that he felt would fit in nicely based on the other team’s defense. Plays that had notes about when and under what circumstances they would work. The rolled up sheet of paper had a letterhead that served as a reminder for the Coach. The Coach’s name was Paul “Bear” Bryant. The letterhead said, “Don’t worry about winning the game, just try not to lose it.”
The conservative playcalling, with a lead, worked pretty good for Bear, and so far it has been adequate for CMR. My biggest problem, like in tonight’s game, is if you are going to run conservative, why not run it with someone like Moreno getting the ball… someone who could still break one loose, even with a dive play. Personally, if it were truly in our best interest to sit on a lead and play conservative in order to win one particular ballgame, the importance of getting Stafford on track by being able to get good at passing down field would over ride the conservative approach. If we had done that against Okie St. the USC outcome may have been different. Even if we were up by three TD’s tonight, all on the running game, it would be a great time to give Stafford some practice in a real game enviroment to get his timing/accuracy down. It would be a big boost to him in experience and would help him and his recievers in their confidence. Besides all that, we didn’t have a big emough lead to be sitting on it anyway. There’s abig difference in playing not to lose and sitting on a lead. Nothing wrong with playing not to lose, but sitting on a lead can be very dangerous. Playing not to lose can mean running a pass play that you don’t force if the guy is not completely open. Sitting on a lead means not even trying to run a pass play and takes the fire and emotion out of the game. If the opponant makes a come-back, its hard to crank up that fire and emotion again. Playing not to lose means running plays that give you ball control and keeps the momentum on your side, or at least keeping it longer. Tonight’s game had serious momentum shifts that kept Bammer in the game til the end. There’s a difference in playing not to lose and sitting on a lead, a big difference that some of the bloggers here don’t seem to understand. UGA don’t need to sit on any leads until every facet of our game is working like a well oiled machine. Stafford shows glimses of greatness but he ain’t no well oiled machine by a longshot.

That td pass form Stafford was a timing pattern where Stafford threw the ball to a spot then let his reciecer run under/to it. THAT is what he needs to do more of. He is waiting untilthe guy gets open before he even throws the ball. Our guys have the speed to get to the ball, they just need to know where it is going to be. Throw it to the pattern , not the man. The man can get the ball if Staff will just lay it out there. Its like a pitcher who can’t throw strikes because he is aiming the ball, instead of throwing the ball.

For a night when people were so critical of the conservative offensive play calling (NascarFan going so far as to call CMR gutless), that was a pretty strong gamble to throw that 25 yd pass to win the game. You’re down by three, all you have to do is drive the ball down to the goal running it, if you don’t get the TD, you’re in Coutou’s automatic range when you first get the ball, anyway. If the pass is underthrown, which under the circumstances had a higher probability than not, it could have been intercepted… game over. When you consider the alternatives, it was a damn gutsy call.

Sorry but this was a game between TWO teams that are just Okay. Stafford, other then that last TD pass, looked as bad as he did against SC. Bama has holes a plenty to fill.
And I have a lot more faith in the future with Saban and Bama then I do with Richt and the Dawgs.
Neither team would be able to hang with Florida or LSU, as you will all see soon enough.
All this crowing on here over an OT win that could have gone either way? You Dawg fans should be thanking your lucky football stars you pulled that one out, not bashing Bama. That type talk should be saved for a route.

Still hate the Dawgs,
You are a putz. This Dawgs team traveled to T-Town and improved an incredible road record under Coach Richt. I agree with your Florida and LSU comments but F$U, are you kidding me??!! They play in a sorry conference they ruled for years and are now playing down to the sorry “competition” of the ACC.

Big win for the Dawgs!! Not many comments on the drops by the recieving corps. Looking at Trip Chandler out there I thought I was looking at Martrez Miller. How did that guy ever find his way onto the field? I don’t understand why we can’t fix this problem. It continues year after year and is sickening to watch. What was nice to watch was the play of the defense and King Knowshown. Martinez deserves a ton of credit. Hopefully when we get a hold of Florida somebody will step up and knock Tim Tebows teeth out!

I am a college football fan. period. I follow many teams. I graduated from a big time basketball school, football is my passion but my Big East school sucks so I just watch other schools. I never made a comment about FSU.
I have come to hate the Dawgs because of the fan behavior. You all were ready to tie Richt and Stafford to a car and drag them out of Athens after that SC game. Now you love them. Same type crap for years. You squeak out a win and brag like it was a blow out.
If you didn’t see a LOT to be concerned about last night, you were too deep in your beer.
Both teams are young BUT Richt has been at UGA for years, Saban is in his 4th game. And yet they were two equal teams last night. One had to win but it could have gone either way. Check out the list of recruits that were at the game last night for Bama. Then check out who has been visiting UGA. HUGE difference and again, Saban has only been there for 4 games.
I predict that this team will lose to Tenn, Florida, Auburn and Kentucky. POSSIBLY beat Vanderbilt which will leave you with a 2-4 SEC record.
Alabama will beat Tenn, Auburn, Miss State and Ole Miss and only lose to LSU which will leave them with a 4-1 SEC record.
Which team will you say had the better season if those predictions come true?

Hunk, I still think shutting down the offense at the end of the half and in the 4th quarter was gutless, play-not-to-lose b.s. and cost us winning the game in regulation.
But it was nice to see that Coach found his b@lls in overtime.
People can learn from their mistakes and become better people (or coaches), it happens all the time.
I fully agree with you about Moreno. If you go conservative, why don’t you have the guy on the field who can make something happen against a 9-man front?

Good game last night. Congrats.
However, I have to agree with Hate the dawgs about your fans. Go back and read the blog right after the loss to South Caro. “FIRE RICHT” “BENCH STAFFORD!” and now, its all love and kisses.
True fans hang with their team, win or lose. On my Bama blog, a main one, the fans for the most part are disappointed but realize its a young team. NOTHING like what I read on here after the SC loss.
All the dissing of Holtz, May etc but you fans were AFRAID to post anything positive. You were just as leery of this game.

No, actually I thought the game was a toss up and that is exactly how it ended up being.
If you lose the games I predict, just watch. The hate machine will fire up. Have a season like Notre Dame and then you can act that way. Bringing out the hate for a loss to South Carolina was ridiculous and the reason why I have never been able to be a Dawg supporter even after living here for 15 years. These are kids, not pros.

I thought we gave Georgia the first half as we were still in a hang-over from Arkansas. Georgia should have taken us out by half time. The resolve and adjustments made at half-time by Alabama’s coachs shows a significant improvement over the previous coaching staff. I really like Moreno for Georgia and I dont understand why they dont use him more he is a beast. I would rate both John Wilson and Stafford the same at this stage both are too eratic. Both missed open receivers Parker more so in this game than Stafford. I would say both Alabama (us) and Georgia are above average teams. We will both have to play perfect to beat LSU or Florida but hey that is why we tee it up. Georgia fans I met prior and after game very gracious. Hope you guys enjoyed your vist to Tuscaloosa congrats and see you next year in Athens

Big win for our freshmen guys upfront. Got one under their belt in a hostile environment. Awesome win! We should’ve put them away early, but we couldn’t capitalized on few 3rd downs.
Love the enthusiam our D had all night. We gave up few big plays but we few 3 and out as well. Awesome!
Special teams played great. Coutu will come back strong. Mims had few close ones… he made me nervous all friggin night, but he got the ball off in a nick of time… whew! Mickey is the man. He is very consistent returning kicks. He came up very big at the end, of course.

Sunday morning comments.
What a lot of you fans do not realize is that the fire Richt and bench Stafford comments after a loss are not from dawg fans. They come from gator, lamecock and bug fans that do not have the courage to admit that they are fans of other schools. Sure I get fed up with them, but since there is no way to filter their krap, it makes it look like alot of dawg fans are ready to fire the coach at the first loss. If you follow the members of the FANS OF CHAN you will notice that we may be dissappointed in a loss, but we do not call for the removal of a coach. Except maybe Coach Eason because his boys can’t catch a cold.
ESPN sure played up the Nick Saban is the next Bear Bryant angle during their game day presentation. They even went with the fact that there is enough room next to Gene Stallings statue for a Nick Saban staute. That gratuitous love fest made me want to barf. Thank you Lee Courso for putting on that Pachyderm head. You guaranteed us a win.
Reading the blog, some of you guys probably do not need to post during live time. Every dropped pass, every run stopped at the line and you all flip out. I was convinced from the start of the game, through the tie and into overtime that we were going to win. I knew it was all over when Bama got the ball first and could do nothing but score a field goal. I knew Matthew would get it in the endzone and did he ever in style. Just learn to have a little more faith and if that does not work repeat like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, “It is only a game, It is only a game”. Remember what is important in life. This is fun, but not that important.
I went to a Sports Bar here in Rochester to watch some of the early games. I could only find one tv that had the LSU-USchickens game on it. The management decided to put the Minnessotta-Perdue game on the big screen. Watched some ball and drank some beers with a displaced Auburn fan. Then I left and came back to the hotel and watched the UGA game with my personal hero, my 11 year old daughter. We ordered pizza and watched it on the big screen in the lobby. Turned the rest of the hotel into Dawg fans. I was right where I wanted to be, with my daughter. I know what is important in life, she is, football is not. Baylie and I had a great time yelling GO DAWGS, WOOF WOOF WOOF!
What everyone seems to forget is that we played a pretty good Bama team and won in their house. Just cause we won does not make Bama lousy. I think they will go on and have a pretty good year, although I don’t see them stopping the LSU steamroller. We got a pretty good team guys and we are going to have to play lights out to beat Ole Miss.
See you on the blogs. godawgs, still planning that FANS OF CHAN chapter meeting before the Ole Miss game?

The Dawgs were the better team. The drop passes kept it from being a BLOWOUT. Moreno should start next week, damn good football player.. If CMR runs him 20-25 times a game and receivers start catching the ball, UGA could get serious..

I am a Bama fan, but if my coach’s name was displayed in headlines all day long on Friday along with the headline, “Is He Man Enough?”…I would personally throw myself under a moving bus for my coach. If losing isn’t enough, my Auburn graduate husband just informed me that Pat Dye was the one who started that saying years ago, when he said The Dogs weren’t man enough to cross over into Alabama. Good game, Dawgs. We’ll have to wait and see on what has begun as am exciting year for everyone who loves football!

One big difference between last night and the USC game is even though we played it conservative for a lot of the game, when we needed to move the ball there at the end, we did it, even though Coutou missed the field goal. But thats okay, he got it out of his system and will be dead solid the rest of the year.

Well…where are the bashers now…? How ‘bout them DAWGS! I was at the game and that place was electric. The Alabama faithful were gracious loosers for the most part. Only had one tide fan throw something at my car.
As we were pulling into Gainesville (Georgia that is) at 4:45 a.m. I heard BTO’s classic and fitting song…taking care of business and working overtime!

A few observations:
The game was about what I expected from two evenly matched teams. Great win for the Dogs in a hostile environment.
Seems like Ala made the adjustments throughout the game whereas Ga seemed content with what they had.
Notice how Ala would line up on defense and force Stafford to audible - then shift right before the snap? Sometimes, I think the offense gets too sophisticated for it’s own good. I seem to recall how Auburn had David Greene (who was one of the best game generals around) twisted like a pretzel a few years ago by doing basically the same thing.
One side benefit of having a back like Moreno on the squad - I think Brown is running harder than he ever has. A large part is due to the increased level of competition that Moreno brings to the table.
The offensive line did an adequate job. Give them credit where credit’s due.
I think I may have a bucket of “Stick’em” from the 1970’s. Reckon I could sneak it in to the receivers?
Finally, I’m glad to see Stafford take a few shots downfield. The biggest benefit to that is that it keeps the opponents defensive secondary honest.

Some of you still choose to point out negatives, and I hope you had fun watching the game on your t.v. instead of going to the game like some of us. Now go away and never come back. Difference between last night and the South Carolina game was largely due to play calling. Bobo tried to out-cute Spurrier and called too many borderline trick plays that didn’t work. Play calling last night was excellent. Took advantage of holes in Alabama defense with passes to backs, ran inside the tackles when needed and Brown and Moreno were alternated effectively.
Good call to throw it one more time late in regulation on 4th down to give Coutu a better shot at a FG. Nice play by Chandler to put Georgia in position to win. Drops are a tradition for Georgia tight ends, why should he break the mold.
Richt may tend to the conservative side when it comes to overall strategy, but it’s well-considered, even if it may not suit the mood of fans who want to go for anything and everything. With the game on the line, however, some great calls, especially the TD pass to Henderson. Just wish the receievers would catch the ball a little better. Might keep winnable games from going into OT or turn into losses.
Great job by the defense except for the late 90 yard drive. The DB coach needs to provide more instruction on how to pass interfere better. The interefence penalty on 4th down late in the 4th quarter could have cost Georgia the game and was not a very smart play. Dogs DBs need to learn how to trip receivers better like the Alabama guy did late. You can get away with that, not grabbing or shoving with the hands.
Sorry you couldn’t make it to the game Chip. Need to have someone other than Strickland write the game stories. Needs to be more about what actually happened in the game and anaylysis of it, and not so much obsession with personalities, which bogs down way too many sports stories these days.

WHILE THE LAST MINUTE WIN WAS EXCITING AND LUCKILY IN OUR FAVOR I STILL DONT UNDERSTAND WHY IT HAD TO COME DOWN TO THE WIRE…I HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR YEARS THAT THE MOTIVATION LEVEL OF OUR PLAYERS IS THE REAL PROBLEM…NOT THE TALENT OR PLAY CALLING (ALTHOUGH THE LATTER IS SOMETIMES QUESTIONABLE)…ITS AS THOUGH WE CAN ONLY EXPECT A QUARTER OR TWO OF “HIGH PERFORMANCE” OUT OF THIS TEAM PER GAME (AND IN THE CASE OF THE S.C. GAME 0 QUARTERS)…THE ABILITY IS THERE….THEY SHOW GLIMMERS OF BRILLIANCE FOLLOWED BY POSSESSION AFTER POSSESSION OF MEDIOCRITY. The WRs… who am I kidding… they wills still drop balls, but at least we’ve been able to overcome that. KnoMo needs the ball more. All in all a great game and one that I think we will build upon.

If any of you are watching the San Diego Green Bay game Favre just threw a perfect td pass on a shotr slant. The commentator said Brett is as proud that he can throw those types passes and get them over defenders as he is the arm strength. The game winner Stafford threw last night was about as good a throw. The thing that really impresses me about it is I don’t know that he’d have made that play just a few weeks ago.He had been throwing those more flat and I think the defender would have had a chance to knock it down. Not to mention it would have been a tougher catch for Mikey.Point is the guy’s learning fast and it may have been the difference in being 3-1 instead of 2-2 now…WAR DAWG—-Come on,Richt is 23-3 on the road, you don’t fall backwards into that kind of record.

Hey, “Still hate:”
Who gives a crap about your “predictions?” They are based on nothing except your impressions, which are as subjective as anyone else’s. And they mean exactly nothing.
I agree that these are two young teams. That’s about all we agree on. Georgia has had some execution and play-calling problems on offense and those problems cost them a win over a South Carolina team that had inferior talent. The problems were identified and (largely) rectified.
Is this team a national title contender? Of course not. Could they lose to all of the teams you listed? Possibly. But the odds are not high.
I think Georgia wins against Ole Miss (in a tough home contest next week—we’re a little banged up), Tennessee (no defense for the Vols, and Richt has NEVER lost at Neyland), Vandy, Troy, Auburn and Georgia Tech. The only near-certain loss on the schedule is to Florida. The UK game is a tossup, but we get them at home, and it’s late in the season, so I’m hoping our offensive miscues will have worked themselves out by then.
As far as Bama goes, I think they’ll lose to LSU, and that’s about it. So they’re looking at 10-2, which is my prediction for Georgia.
You call these two AVERAGE teams? I cal them two young teams with tremendous potential. Both will be playing in New Year’s Day Bowls, and both will return almost everyone next season.
Seems to me you don’t know much about football. Of course, that’s just my opinion.

A lot of negative comments about Stafford’s accuracy and inability to throw vertically. By my count there were 4 gut shot drops. He had 19 completions in 35 attempts for a pretty mediocre ratio of 54%. If those 4 passes had been caught his % improves to 66%. Not bad for a kid barely turned 19, especially behind a predominantly freshman O line. I thought the line looked pretty impressive and Stafford awfully cool. Saw him play a number of games in high school and can assure that he has the downfield ability in a big way. This was a tremendous confidence boost to a group that is just learnig including a new O coordinator, and young QB, o line and really talented young back.

Great game Dawgs. Just one observation that I think all observant Dawg fans notice. CMR lacks the killer instincts. You have to realize that in the course of this game fans know that the dogs had Bama beat. We had more intensity and the game plan was seamless except for Tripp Chandler’s glaring drops. At the end of the 2nd quarter with the ball and 2 + minutes to go CMR decided to shut down the offense and head for the locker room. What further evidence do we need to prove that the head coach lacks the killer instincts like say the remaining head coaches in the SEC-precisely what Georgia needs to get to the next level. I argue that we go out and recruit these high visibility players but we stagnate their growth by not allowing them to show their full potential. How did we throw deep? Once and even then Mikey should have caught that ball. We keep playing conservative and I would not want to come to Georgia if I’m a big time recruit on the bubble. Why come to Georgia and do 3 yards and a cloud of dust where instead SC, FL, and LSU go big, throw big, and seem to have the killer instincts. It is time to let the reigns go. LET THE BIG DAWGS EAT CMR!!!

bob - dead on. Nice touch using UGA celebrities to identify the players. I don’t watch morning news so I didn’t recognize her but wasn’t the first name Deborah? She did a fantastic job. I thought UGA used the passing game to set up the running game very effectively (when normally it’s the opposite). I thought the UGA defense looked good. I can’t wait for the 5 star wide receiver from Carolina to get here. I think there’s way more upside with Massaquoi but that’s just a gut feeling. What’s up with NaDerris? I think Major Applewhite was a good acquisition for Saban, and his future looks bright right now. Know-Stopping-Shon.

I really have to give UGA congrats after the great, inspired way the team played against Ala.. You could tell the team was fired up and was going to leave it all out on the field. I loved the call in OT !! Our coach would never have made that call…no guts, no glory !!It’s painfully obvious our coaching is very ordinary , on both sides of the ball . Against BC , we were beat by a better team, but against VA we were *outcoached * Again , great win Dawgs , and I really think you should win the rest of the year, except for Fla, as much as I hate to say it.

Brett Favre just tied Morino for most tds in a career.I don’t want’a get too crazy but every pass he’s made today Stafford has the arm to make. That’s not to say he’s Favre, alot of what Brett does is because he’s got that intangible stuff running out his ears.Still, Stafford may well be the top player in the draft some day.Let’s hope it’s after a national championship winning senior year.

Ditto Alabama fan. I would like to say basically the same thing. Congrats to CMR and the team on a hard fought victory. We’ve both got young teams with tons of potential but IMO ya’ll simply wanted it more. Good luck with the rest of your season and who knows, both teams grew up alot last night, maybe with a little luck vs LSU/Fla respectively we may even get a rematch in Dec. Both teams are certianly capable especially with a few breaks. Lastly, if any of the UGA team or staff are reading I want to personally apologize for the shameful way the greek students acted after the game. Throwing object on opposing players is PURE TRASHY and doesn’t reflect how the majority of our fans act. The President should try to identify as many of these people as possible and discipline them accordingly (starting with revoking student tickets for the rest of their time at Bama). Roll Tide!!!!

Bama has a very promising future with Major running the offense. Big difference from Shula’s. He is a bright young coach, he’ll make a good head coach someday. Bama has a good team… need more depth, IMO.

Can some of my fellow Dawg fans imagine being one of the proud programs that are in the tank?
Can you picture what the Notre Dame fans are going through? 6 straight blowout losses? No bowl wins in about 15 years?
Nebraska, barely able to hang on against teams like Ball State and Wake Forest? 10 years ago, that would have been unheard of!
Michigan? Back to back losses in the big house to Oregon and Appy State?

I-Dog, THAT is my point. UGA has a great football tradition AND has done very well over the past decade. However, apparently to some fans, a loss to South Carolina or a year when they don’t win the SEC etc and they stink and FIRE THE COACH. Its not just the trolls and/or bandwagon fans on this blog either. Its the people I work with, my neighbors, people at church.
You brought up Notre Dame. I suggest you take a tour of some of their blogs. Frustrated yes. Heartbroken. Absolutely. But they love their team and the past means something to them. There is not a darn thing wrong with that. I saw on the GT blog an Irish fan get taken apart because he dared suggest that even with a suck year, the Irish were still special. Well, more power to him.
Go on the Bama forums, they are all talking about how this loss could be a good thing, they are still hyped about Saban and their team AFTER A LOSS. More power to them too.
This is college ball. If you are a fan, stay one, through thick and thin. Save your “fire the coach” and “bench so and so” for the pros who make the big dollars. My kid is a D-1 athlete in a big time school in another sport. I know first hand how much these kids give and give.
If I ever got the feeling that UGA fans were the same as Notre Dame, Alabama etc, I would jump on board. Maybe its just the Atlanta fans. My neighbor didn’t even put his UGA flag up until AFTER the game last night.

I think coach Richt was smart when he reminded the team thursday how they’d whipped Saban’s LSU team 45 to 16 in 04 at UGA.He didn’t brag, it was in context of ‘this is how we did it then’ but I think it set a tone of ‘we can do it’.

Bama fans has done the same to Tenn. and LSU. I had a friend in 2004, that got struck with a stick walking to his car after a hard fought Auburn win. Stafford has got to be more consistent with the downfield pass. The receivers have gotten a little better with the drops. A little better than terrible still isn’t very good though!! We’ve missed several big play opportunities down field already this year. Wide open receivers who are overthrown, and also a drop or two. These can be game changing and demoralizing to the opponent. Gotta play well against ole miss and get ready for UT. Big win though. Let’s keep it up!

dawgfacedboy, interesting you say that about Stafford, that is the one thing i have been most consistently disappointed in is Stafford’s lack of touch of the long ball, usually the guys with the Stafford arm throw that ball well and struggle with the intermediate touch passes. Stafford is actually most comfortable with the short stuff and 15-30 yard passes over the middle. All of that said, I have to keep reminding myself he is just a true sophmore playing behind a very young oline. Looking ahead, I am hoping to see a more inspired home effort this week, the last season at home, the guys have done a poor job protecting the home turf and we seem to come out not ready to play ala SC this year. The crowd needs to really get up and get loud when we have Miss in third down. Athens continues to get more wine and cheese. TN in two weeks really scares me, I think our defense is really getting by on a lot of smoke and mirrors and we give Ainge the amount of time we have given Mitchell and Wilson, we will get shredded. TN doesn’t seem like a great matchup for us this year. We have to start getting more pressure or long days are ahead against TN, FL, KTY, and even Troy.

Fulmer is sweating bullets. Prior to the California game, he knew he was on the hot seat. I don’t feel Cutcliffe is the answer up there. The UT football program has shown me it may need a total make over. UT is averaging apx 37.5 pa in 4 games. The D doesn’t have a leader, nobody has stood up and said, “Enough”. GaBama, Pleeeze…you’re talking ‘bout Bama fans. How many coaches have you run off in Tuscaloosa? And look how many coaches turned you down before Saban took that job. Bottom line is fans everywhere tend to have unrealistic expectations. Just wait til that honeymoon is over with Saban and they start to lose a few games. Then it’ll be back to over-reaction from the majority of Tide fans!!!!

Spike, that was so that they could rinse the bottles out before they were tossed. I would consider that polite because I have heard that that MadDog 20/20 will stain a uniform something bad.

Spike, UGA was damaging the property, I think a UGA official said the same would have been done at Sanford.
