UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Dogs, Cocks also battle for recruits

Sorry just getting around to the blog today. Been a busy one but enjoyable as the week kind of winds down for us on Thursday evening. Friday’s are wonderful for me in the fall. Saturday’s are, too, but for us they can be extemely intense workwise, especially with evening kickoffs.

It appears this is going to be a huge recruiting weekend for the Dogs. Now I’m not a recruitnik and I don’t call prospects every day and Georgia, of course, can’t divulge whom they might be hosting on any given weekend. So I can’t detail you on which blue-chipper from where is going to be in Athens this weekend. If you know, please feel share with the distinquished audience herein. But I saw Bryant Gantt, who helps coordinate the Bulldogs’ recruiting visits, and he did confirm that it was a big weekend.

I would assume wide receiver prospect A.J. Green of Summerville, S.C., will be on site. Of course, this 5-star recruit has been a solid UGA commitment for a long time. But South Carolina has been hot and heavy after him and has never relented in their pursuit, as I understand it. Which makes you wonder if the outcomes of these games really make a difference to the eventual destinations of these individual recruits.

Most of the time most of the SEC schools are all after the same recruits. If you’re a 4- or 5-star prospect, you can bet every one of them knows about you and has at least made some phone calls and asked for you to visit. Makes you wonder if Tennessee mounting that big second-half comeback on Georgia in Athens last year had any influence on Eric Berry eventually signing with the Vols. By the same token, could Green’s eventual destination be swayed by the outcome of Saturday’s game?

Traditionally — and especially under coach Mark Richt — the Bulldogs have been able to go into the Palmetto State and cherry-pick the best players to come play for them in Athens (see Richard Seymour). Georgia has only five South Carolina players at the moment but three of them are at least part-time or full-time starters (FS CJ Byrd, DE Marcus Howard and CB Prince Miller). DB Antavious Coates was a prep All-American before four knee surgeries sidelined his career and the Bulldogs expect Charles White to star linebacker before he leaves.

But South Carolina and Georgia are increasingly going head-to-head on top recruits and the Dogs have lost more of those battles recently. I wrote a story that was in this morning’s newspaper about the mysterious loss of Clifton Geathers to the Chickens and Georgia also lost out in the battle for Cliff Mathews of Cheraw, S.C., who will play Saturday as a backup defensive end for the Gamecocks.

All of which is to say, the Bulldogs have to be very diligent about staying on top of South Carolina in recruiting and continue to win the battles for the blue-chippers. That makes the sweepstakes for A.J. Green that much more important, in my opinion. What do y’all think?

Chip,

Good article on Geathers today in the AJC.

My only question is why didn’t you ask him if the many false and unkind things Carter Strickland had to say about him is one of the reasons he wasn’t “feeling” Georgia?

We all know the deal here. There was massive unprofessionalism on Carter Strickland’s part in dealing with this story, and to fans, it was unconscionable. To Geathers himself it must have felt like a direct attack against him.

If that’s the case, I can see why he would want no part in that.

One of these days, Carter Strickland is going to have to pay for his numerous indiscresions.

And that day can’t come too soon.

2 big uncommitted prospects will be in Athens this weekend. Zebrie Sanders a highly recruited OT prospect out of Ohio. His mom is a UGA alum and Jeremy Brown a highly touted DB recruit out of Florida. As far as AJ goes. Even if we lost the game it won’t have an effect on him. He has been a UGA fan all his life and can’t wait to wear the red&black

In my humble opinion, IMHO. Geathers stopped being a Georgia recruit when the Ignorant Slut, Carter Strickland, called him everything but Downs Syndrome. Just my opinion, notice the legalalize, but Carter in my opinion, seemed to imply that this kid was “retarded in his mental capacities” and that he would get into Georgia by Georgia bending the rules. Now that is just my opinion, but there are others who may share my opinion of the way the Ignorant Slut treated this recruit. Opinions are like rectal orifices, everyone has one and ours is named, by me, the Ignorant Slut. I would like to thank Carter Strickland for his invaluable contribution to this rant. Carter, your admiration society meets in the closet next to the fourth floor mens room at the AJC. Every sixth Tuesday in a month.

Cuz, you and I are on the same wavelength.

Chip, please answer the following:

Why didn’t you ask Geathers the one question that any single one of us would have asked him, about if he decided to not be a Georgia recruit BECAUSE of Carter Strickland’s unethical attack of him in AJC?

Were you afraid of the truth that might have been told in answer to that question, Chip?

Once again, Chip, I know it may seem unfair, but we really do trust you because of your professionalism and ethical clarity as a journalist. And with that trust comes the expectation that you would ask the hard questions that WE would ask, or that WE would want answered.

I know all of us to a one would want to know if Carter Strickland’s unprofessional written hit-job on Geathers had anything with him going to South Carolina.

It’s a fair and very logical question, Chip.

It should have been asked.

Were you worried that the truth would have gotten a collegue fired?

I mean, I’m sure you know the power that the local teams have. You were with the AJC when Arthur Blank and Little Jimmy Mora, that petulant, spoiled brat, had Matt Winklejohn reassigned.

Now me, personally, I would kill to have Strickland reassigned. All Matt Winklejohn did was call a spade a spade in Mora’s case when he said he was acting like an idiot, which he was. What Strickland did to Geathers should have been a firable offense.

You want to know why we still hate Carter Strickland beyond the fact that he makes it known through his snide comments that he loathes the Bulldog Nation?

Geathers is why we hate him.

He’s a two-bit hitman.*

chip,i don’t hate carter and i don’t hate you.i enjoyed carters article on our running backs.it was very refreshing and i would have liked to be able to post about the rb situation.as to this blog,it serves no purpose, other than follow in the footsteps of every other writter at ajc sports.that is to write about usc,and not the real one.did spurrier slip you guys a fifty under the table to get him some pr?yes we do compete with usc,we have forever.do you know so little about uga football that you think this is news?i usually enjoy your blogs and will be glad when you guys decide to write about the dawgs so that we could write about the team we support.by the way guys, the athens banner herald has some good info on their web site,i went there last night when i got tired of reading about spurrier.he may be the hero of the ajc,but since leaving uf his record has been rather ordinary.he may beat the dogs saturday,he will upset a ranked sec team this year.but it will be just that,an upset.that is all he will have to look foward to untill he retires, the odd upset.year in year out he is outrecruited by uf,uga,ut,and lsu and au in the west.with saban at ‘bama, i expect their recruiting to skyrocket.ark also recruits pretty well.sos will be stuck in the bottom half of the league because he can’t compete for recruits.he has enough trouble trying to hang with clemson in his own state.

I really had no idea what the Carter Strickland thing was about till now.I live out of state and didn’t start reading the AJC on line till last fall.I did a google search and after 15 minutes I think I located the article of contention.Go to google type—— Geathers story gathers drama…carter strickland…6-26-2006-3:53 PM.Even though he may have been making a valid point,it seems to me he used Cliffton in a thoughtless, mean spirited, sarcastic way to make it.I have a brother who was dyslexic, another brother (his twin) tells me stories of how he was treated by some teachers. There is never a good reason to humiliate a person for something they can’t control.I know it’s all about football with some of you and to me that’s about as bad as what Strickland did.

ranger, thanks for the heads-up.iread carters blog,he seems to think uga standards are low for football players.on the contrary standards at uga are higher than the ncaa requires.there are at least three players on the usc team because of strict requirements.the twins were recruited by uga,but they wanted to play together and coaches thought only one could qualify.then of course geathers.richt has also sent players to sylvester crooms and others outside the sec when he realized they could not be admitted to uga.carter could have cost the dogs with this blog,it’s one thing to report a problem, another to name names and point fingers.which carter did.this article had to hurt the young man, nobody wants their problems aired in public.now i see why these guys are so angry with carter.

Cuz and NASCARfan…

I want to apologize to you guys. I was reading the blog and all ready to saythat you guys were wrong about slamming Mr. Strickland the way you do. But not knowing the whole story about the Geathers situation, I took A-ville Ranger’s advice and looked up the blog archive and read the article for myself. What really got me was the flame in his last couple of lines…

Maybe Georgia is the place where Geathers can turn his academic future around. It’s doubtful, but it has happened to other players at other places.

There is an obvious bias against the UGA athletic program by Mr. Strickland.

Mr. Strickland needs to keep his personal bias out of his “journalism.” If he wants to spew his rants and personal dislikes of people, he can join jay bookman, and cynthia tucker in the opinions page.

Ya’ll know I didn’t like Carter’s article… there have been a bunch of his articles that I haven’t cared for, but consider this- If Clifton read the lead-in, doesn’t it make sense that he would have also read the tremendous outpouring of support that followed, Carter was taken to task in a mighty way for that piece, and has been for over a year now. I have to say, if I were a recruit and saw a blog like that, where the real fans came out in my defense, that is exactly where I would want to play. I doubut it had anything to do with his decision, at all.

As one of his most vocal critics, I have to say that the last several articles Carter has done have been exceptionally great work. If he turns into Mr. Hyde again, I’ll be right in there with you guys on the hate train, but since I last took him to task, he has done really well. Would it have been nice for him to at least acknowledge our complaints for his article on Geathers and some of the other ones that seemed like under the table hatchet jobs? He!! yes, but I honestly think the man was playing a role, part of the territory, to get responses. If you doubt his talent as a sportswriter, you just aren’t paying attention.

I would say there was pretty good chance that Geathers did not factor in a comment, in a sports blog, by a staff writer in a newspaper 70 miles away from that campus, when making a college carreer decision. Its pretty remote he would even know what anyone was talking about. He doesnt know Carter Strickland from Adams house cat. (Hey, thats an idea, lets blame Adams, can’t go wrong there)

It’s possible that the actual colleges, coaches, family, and circle of influences involved had some input.

NASCAR, Cuz, HunkEr, I was extremely PO’d about that attack on Geathers. Still am. Who knows, something like that can effect a recruit. I say ban Carter now from even commenting on AJ. Have his computer locked out somehow from even being able to type AJ Green. AJ will see the future with Stafford on Saturday and see what his future holds. 2 years with a top notch QB? Or four years with some Smelley QB or a QB that will key your ride if you drop a pass?

By AltamahaDawg

September 7, 2007 11:04 AM | Link to this

As I recall, the attack wasnt so much on Gaithers. Didnt he just state the widely accepted situation that Gaithers himself readily speaks of?

Very similar things have been implied in here about Caleb King. How many Dawg fan have listed his pending failing as a reason to play early??? Not sure the King’s thought that was real cool or supportive.

He did take a shot at UGA as not really the place to go if academic improvement was the goal, but surely his family could have decided that for themselves.

Was a worthless , classless blog topic, but lets not act like this is really some highly influential forum.

Who cares why he didn’t come to Athens?!?!? He’s not here and any guesses as to why is pure speculation and pointless. Let’s focus on playing well tomorrow so that the recruits we are trying to get NOW are excited about coming to Athens. S.C. always plays the dawgs close and I’m expecting a pretty stressful 3 hours at Sanfor Stadium tomorrow. Hopefully our boys will come out and play fired up, play smart! I’m sick and tired of people bashing Carter over a blog from more than a year ago. Carter did not write one thing in that blog that was not the absolute truth. All he did was look into something hundreds of people were asking about — which was why didn’t that 5-star recruit Clifton Geathers ever sign with the Dogs like he said he would? — and tell you guys what he found out and what he thought about it.

If you think that one blog from one sportswriter would cause an athlete to decide not to sign with a school, then that school hasn’t done a very good job of recruiting that athlete… . The truth — which we don’t know unequivocably and probably never will — is that Georgia probably backed off because of all the academic red flags and South Carolina was willing and able to step in.

If you truly cared about the University of Georgia, you’d be glad that it occasionally steps up and says ‘no’ to questionable academic circumstances. Sure, the Dogs would love to Geathers on their team, as they would the Brinkley brothers and Jamar Chaney and a Michael Grant and many. But the point is, they have standards they won’t compromise and that’s a good thing. Isn’t it?

By wondering

There is no way that Geathers had academic issues after Hargrave. As we saw with this past recruiting class when Spurrier got upset, SC doesn’t let academically inept students in. Theres more to this story then we will probably ever find out…

What’s South Carolina doing on offense these days? If you’re an AJC reader, you have no idea. What kind of defense might the Cocks employ against Georgia? Again, AJC readers are in the dark on such matters. But danged if we don’t know who the most hated coach in the SEC is. That’s some valuable information. “the Bulldogs have been able to go into the Palmetto State and cherry-pick the best players to come play for them in Athens (see Richard Seymour).” Chip - Seymour was considered a ‘project’, only achieved All-Region Honors and was not even offered a scholarship by Carolina or Clemson. Chip - I agree that if someone goes to another school because of a blog article we have some major issues in the recruiting office.

I think the issue readers took with Carter’s article, and with many of his articles, was his tone. I believe that the facts he reported were true and nothing was made up or libelous. Now, it has been, as you said, a year since I’ve read the article but it has stuck in my memory. If I remember correctly, the problem was that he came across as 1) piling on when it simply wasn’t necessary, 2) borderline making fun of whatever the issue was with Geathers, and 3)making fun of the University, its admission standards and its fans. You know the old saying of “it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it”? Many times, Carter may be making a good point but he also comes across as making fun of the school and its fans. Personally, I would MUCH rather read your blogs and articles than Carter’s because I know that even though you will make the occasional sarcastic comment (as we all do) you’re not condescending about it. Anyway, not trying to add to the argument, just my 2 cents.

Off of that subject. Chip - How do you see the Green thing playing out? Have you been able to talk to him? Does he seem like the kind of kid who may get caught up in the attention he will be getting this year and buy whatever snake oil the Visor throws his way?

Mark and Suwanee,

You’ve hit the nail right on the head.

Chip, you have to understand that the vitriole that Carter gets, he’s brought and brings on himself.

With every snide comment, every sarcastic putdown, every backhanded thing he says… he calls are anger to him.

We’re not stupid, or as stupid as he thinks we are. We didn’t appreciate the thinly-veiled contempt he had for us when he began this job. The man could hardly hide his loathing.

That’s not what Bulldog Nation deserved from our beat writer. Respect flows two ways, Chip.

You’re right, I want my academic institution to play by the rules and bring in players who can at least maintain a C average in college.

But his comments were unprofessional and out of line, no matter how much truth was draped around them.

And he even continues his attitude to this day. It might not be in every article he writes, but he can’t help himself to slip in some kind of backhanded remark when the mood strikes him, and I can tell you right now, I don’t care for it at all.

Stick up for your boy if you must, but I’d rather have you and Matt Winklejohn working this beat.

Chip:

In one sense, the Geathers article/blog by Carter Strickland is no longer relevant since Geathers was never admitted and never enrolled at UGA. On the other hand, Strickland’s coverage of the Geathers’ situation is but another prime example of HIS lack of professionalism in journalism. Your defense of Strickland is predicated on the assertion that Strickland “didn’t write anything that wasn’t the absolute truth.” Yet, you also admitted that Strickland was “telling what he thought” about Geathers failing to sign with UGA.

To be sure, Strickland’s thoughts are not the absolute truth… they are just his thoughts, as subjective as they are. More important, if anyone reads the specific article in question(http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/uga/entries/2006/06/26/geathers_story.html), the snide, sarcastic comments and tone employed by Strickland when discussing UGA and its football program, as well as Geathers, are conspicuous for all to see and demonstrate that Strickland has not confined himself to “absolute truth.” Strickland’s “thoughts” or comments about UGA, its football program and Geathers in his article were unjustified and unprofessional, and for that, he will carry that article around his neck as an albatross as long as he continues to write about anything concerning the University of Georgia because it shows his bias and negativity toward UGA and its football program.

I also believe, Chip, that even though I find your articles to be quite good, your defense of Strickland and his article negatively impacts your credibility as a journalist covering the University of Georgia and its football program. You should be careful not to tie your future to a sinking ship, lest Strickland then becomes an albatross around your neck and you become hoisted by your own petard!

I’m sure a young man like Geathers loved the fact that he was being ridiculed by a Bulldog beat writer. Whether it was true or not has absolutely nothing to do with it. Just because it’s true doesn’t mean it needs to be put out in the open. Usually when a kid goes off to college they revel in the fresh start. Geathers sounds like a good kid who works hard to overcome obstacles, he didn’t need to be called out like that. Carter’s a grown man who made fun of HS grad’s academic victories.

What I said is Carter told readers what he had found out, then told him what HE thought about it. Don’t be confused, blogs are different than actual newspaper articles. We provide these forums as a behind the scenes look at what we do, as a place to get a little deeper into things and, for us reporters, to share a little of our insights and opinions… . Carter and I are teammates. We work for the same newspaper. We may not do things the same way or have the same style or share the same backgrounds but, ultimately, we work together and must function as a team. I say that as a response to your reference of tieing my career to a sinking ship. Some folks’ opinion of Carter aside, he is in very good stead with his employers and an award-winning writer besides. He also authors very positive and enlightening works, such as his recent story on Mark Richt and how the players feel about him. Neither Carter nor I are here to promote UGA; we’re here to report on it. And that means the bad things as well as the good.

Eric4Carolina, don’t be rediculous. When was the last time you took a stroll through downtown Columbia? It is an absolute sewer of a campus and even less of a town. Athens on the other hand has been consistently named as one of America’s most beautiful campus, favorite college towns, and one of the best venues to play for. It is hard for anyone who has visited both schools to understand why a highly touted athlete would choose SC over UGA.

Chip, I’m a fan of what you are doing and I understand you want to defend your friend and colleague. I have a mixed view of what Carter has written. As I have said before I think his articles are good.

I took great offense at what he wrote about Clifton Geathers. I haven’t said anything about it since and I have been prepared to let bygones be bygones, but since it is being drug back up, I’m weighing in. Carter called his educational and mental ability into question and I think it is disgusting for any newspaper to criticize any young man struggling to overcome a learning disability the way Clifton Geathers has.

My son has the same learning disability and I’ve watched him struggle with it. He’s a kid with an IQ well into the genius range, but in the second grade he was struggling to read at the first grade level. His math scores at the time were 12th grade, and as his teacher said, he knows things about science she didn’t know. If I had to guess he’ll wind up being a doctor like his mother, but believe me it has taken years of specialized education for him to overcome it and the biggest struggle was for him not to feel terrible about himself.

So you go ahead and get p** off, but I’ll tell you one thing. It is a good thing Carter Strickland didn’t write that story about my son, because if he had I would have personally kicked his a* up around his ears, consequences be damned.

Chip,

It’s not about one style v. a different style.

It’s about respect.

It’s going about your job in a professional manner. It’s about not talking down to your audience because you feel like you’re so much smarter than they are. It’s about keeping whatever bias you have out of your writing. It’s about stop being as @$$, stop with the disrespectful backhanded and snide remarks, and stop with the thinly veiled loathing for Bulldog Nation.

Once again, Chip, respect is a two way street. It’s why we respect you, and don’t respect Strickland. I don’t care if Carter Strickland wins a damn Pulitzer. He’ll still be what he is: an @$$hole, until he changes his attitude. I fully believe that a leopard can change his spots. I’ve seen too much in my relatively short life to believe otherwise. But the leopard has to want to change his spots. He can’t say he’s sorry, and then 3 months later, writer another story with yet more sarcastic, infamatory, and snide remarks imbedded in it. The say he’s sorry, and two months later do it again.

It doesn’t work that way, Chip.

So … the bottom line of Carter’s blog entry on Geathers is to point out that UGA “has standards they won’t compromise, and that’s a good thing” lmao, yeah, right. I doubt that even Carter would try to choke down that chicken neck.

First off, because of a recent, and humiliating mistake on my part, Carter and I got to know each other on a more personal level. I consider him a friend and a stand up guy. I felt like friggin’ Jimmy Swaggert, but I made a friend.

As a journalist, he is and has been an award winning sportswriter. For example, one article he wrote in Wash. was so good and employed such investigative skills that Sports Illustrated was, reportedly, scrambling to their attorneys and baffled that he could get hold of the information that he found. There are many great and informative articles in his resume.

So I ask myself, “Why would such an intelligent and talented individual use techniques like implying that Geathers would have meant ‘millions of dollars’ in revenue for the University of Georgia, and seeking a way to get around NCAA rules, or at least stretch them to the outer limits would be ‘profitable’ for the University, and by the way, maybe the kid can get a devalued sheepskin out of it. Where was the part about UGA won’t compromise on their standards and that’s a good thing?

Let’s say that Geathers would in fact have meant millions of dollars for the University… does the fact that the 4 star recruit that we “did” get in his place at least bring in a million or two? Is the difference so disparaging in who we recruited and who we got that it needed to be pointed out in print that we are merely money hungry minded when it comes to who we seek to bring into the fold? It went way too far, it made Geathers appear to be a dumb lumox looking for a way around NCAA rules, and it wasn’t right. Carter is a much better journalist than that, he has proved it, but geeeesh its over, let’s put it to rest. Playful banter like my friend Cuz employs is fine but this cut throat stuff is just too much. I want to see the kind of reporting that Carter did in Washington… I told him so. I am staisfied by the proof of his work within the last several weeks that he is, in fact doing just that. I’m not implying that I had anything to do with it, but the record is true, you can go back and look at his work lately.

I think Carter did a hatchet job with the Geathers story, but it is old news and the work he has done lately shows me that he does value his job and he plans on being fair in his reporting.

BTW, I will be the first to admit that a lot of us in here can be like sharks in the tank during a feeding frenzy, and I am a freaking Maco the way I jump on fresh meat sometimes. We’re not hard to hate.

Look at the bright side, we could have Terrence “it’s a race thang” Moore to have to live with.

By 2N4YEARS

What you have to understand that every one of these recruits are different. You mention that the GA-TENN game last year might have convinced a recruit to go to TENN, but when GA lost to Kentucky last year Caleb King said that it was a ‘sign’ for him to come to UGA. Just goes to show you never know how someone else may think. A win may convince one guy to go some where as a loss may convince someone else of the same. As for AJ Green, I think he’s pretty solid on UGA, regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s game (although I think UGA will win big). Athens is 3 hours from Columbia, so anyone that’s being recruited by both UGA & SC isn’t going to be swayed much by location, and UGA has a MUCH richer football tradition. If a guy chooses UGA he’s almost certian to be in a SEC Championship game within his 4 years on campus.

Reality Check

I just wanted to say, it’s parents like you that give me hope for the future of our country. Keep pushing your son to succeed where it matters the most. Keep encouraging him to never give in to his own fears, disabilities, or to what people like Carter Strickland may say about him.

It’s time that the stigma of “special ed” and “learning disability” by wiped clean out of our lexicon and lives. I’ve worked with high school age kids like your son (not too much younger than me) who have learning disabilities that range from moderate to severe. From AD/HD to Autism. I was never more amazed at the daily struggle some kinds of learning and education can be for these kids and the way in which they overcome them on a daily basis. They are fighters and survivors. They refuse to be prisoners of their disability. They are far from “handicapped.”

From a human standpoint, a standpoint of empathic human decency, Carter Strickland should have been fired or demoted right off for his intense insensitivity.

Chip, I really don’t want to get into the middle of this but, you have to understand that the hostility you are witnessing towards Carter is directly related to how he handled this blog as opposed to his articles. He always treated this blog as something he was being forced to do and he was not shy about letting us know how much he disliked it. It was very unprofessional of him to say the least. You should be aware that the posters on this blog have a 180 degree attitude towards you. This is for the simple reason that you are much more professional in your attitude towards the fans who post here and you seem to enjoy the interaction. I personally stopped coming here over a year and a half ago because he allowed it to become a circus. I have come back only because you have taken it over and I wish to thank you for doing so.

I really don’t understand why a lot of you guys can’t just let it go. I don’t know what happened and you don’t either, but if that blog played any role in his not coming to Ga. we’ll never know it. From the start there was something wrong with the whole deal, I mean like he picked the Dawgs but never sent over the signed commit papers. for 2-3 months or so he stayed in touch as if everything was fine then in Nov. he all of a sudden disappeared then showed up in Columbia. You don’t like Carter, so what. I don’t care for what he writes a lot of the time myself but he has put out some good columns lately. We need to be eyeing what’s happening now. Tavares King now has left the door open a bit for Clemson, Allen in N.C. has opened his recruiting door a lot and a couple more have done the same. Lets quite wasting time over something that’s dead and gone. I’m much more worried about tomorrow than anything else. I’ve just wasted to much time posting about Carter Strickland, my wrong.

This is a late entry in the who’s the best coachin the SEC conversation. I was driving back to my Black Mountain NC home this afternoon after a great day kayaking the Green river.I turned on the radio and there was a conversation (on NPR I believe).A hospital chaplain was telling about a six year old girl who had died of cancer with her mother and eight year old sister at her side.Something about the story got to me and I choked up.I’m not a christain in fact I’m agnostic and I’m turned off by much of what I see and hear from the so called christian community.Listening to that program though I was reminded of coach Richt’s wife on the sideline with their little daughter last week.Is Richt the best coach in the SEC ? I don’t know,I do know that I wouldn’t trade him and his family for any of the others.

The Lord said forgive, he did not say forget. I have forgiven the Ignorant Slut a while back. I will not forget that he seemed to make fun of the disabled and since I have a disabled daughter, it affects me personally.

I have been head over heels delighted with Carter’s new journalistic profesionalism this spring and now fall with his articles(always liked them, go to past blogs if you don’t believe it) and his great work on the blogs this season. The Geathers thing busted a scab and broke open an old wound. I call him the Ignorant Slut now just for the fun of it. I think the man is capable of Pulitzer work and I anticipate his articles. And no I am not sucking up to the Ignorant Slut.

As I said earlier I am prepared to let bygones be bygones about Carter and I like Carter’s articles. My son is doing extremely well - all 4 of my children are - and life is good.

I believe it will be a great game. I will be in my mountain retreat and after a full say of splitting firewood for the winter I’ll drink some cobeer to rehydrate, throw a steak on the grill, and fire up the satellite to watch the game.

I think we are slightly better on both sides of the ball and way better at quarterback and depth. Spurrier’s reported comments about South Carolina’s stopping the run are spot on. If they can, they have a chance. If they can’t, they don’t.

Spurrier is a great coach. It should be a great game between two great teams. Usually the loser is eliminated from the championship race. This year I don’t believe that is the case based on the balance in the SEC East

I must say, sitting here in the San Francisco Airport and reading posts by people that have absolutely no understanding of journalism blows my mind. Really, as a two-time graduate of UGA, I am disheartened that our fans believe that our beat writers should be cheerleaders for this University. You all don’t come right out and say it, but that is what you believe. Their job is to report what they see, that’s it. On a Blog or Column, they have some latitude to express some opinion. As a person who had classes with many a football player in my years at UGA, I don’t see much wrong in what Carter wrote in the infamous blog from June of last year. It’s true that he wouldn’t even be considered if he wasn’t a football player AND it’s true that we have let in some very questionable guys in the past. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s no different than any other school, so what’s the problem here?

Let me ask all of you this, what do you think scares a recruit off more, a beat writer that could care less about the success of the program he covers or a bunch of fans that have nothing better to do all day but discuss the lives of 19 year olds on the internet. As someone who deals with the media all the time, I can tell you that you all scare the hell out of me a lot more than a guy with a typewriter… My God people, Carter is a dove compared to the scrutiny that these guys are under on blogs like this and the Dawgvent.

Another thing that you guys don’t seem to realize is that your b*** and moaning doesn’t hurt Carter in any way. Quite the opposite, the more you spend your time on this forum talking about him, the more his editors tell him to keep up the good work. People didn’t watch Monday Night Football because they loved Howard Cosell, no, they watched because the hated the S.O.B. so much they couldn’t turn away. So, NASCARFan, you and your crew can continue the Sisyphean (look it up) task of whining that your beat writer doesn’t say what you like, or you can suck it up and realize that this is the friggin’ AJC and not Rivals.com.

Now, discuss amongst yourselves, I actually have work to do…

While you may think that we’re all rednecks, you are painfully wrong. We’re made up of all classes of workers, from CEO’s to people who are trying to find a job. Well, I have to admit it, Husk has opened my eyes. First of all, I said that I work with journalists, I am not one. In fact, I also work with CEO’s on a daily basis. As I read back on the posts on this blog, it is now obvious to me that these are the words of senior management. I can’t tell you how often “ignorant slut” comes up in conversation with CEO’s. And really, most Senior VP’s I know are at home by 4:30 on a Friday to catch Jime Rome’s show…

I too went back and read Carter’s post. As I read it, I could not believe the level of ignorance displayed in his well-researched opinion. Logically, I came to the conclusion that he also had many whorish tendencies because I disagreed with some of his views. How could I have missed that the first time?

Watching the UGA/USC game I can see why the SEC is the best conference in football. There is so much speed on the field between both teams. If UGA had a good offensive line they would be awesome. Moreno is special, but he looks to be too much of a showboat.

It looks as though Spurrier has finally got some blue chip talent at SC. Looks as though this one will go down to the wire.

Whatever the diagnosis of Stafford’s problem for missing those two passes (at least), whether he’s just excited or the ball is sailing on him, it should have been 2 tds. We just can’t afford that stuff.

Looks like Stafford may be getting his scope zeroed in. That Tripp Chandler is a friggin magnet to the ball, exploit it, dammit.

Soon as I say something about Chandler, he’s wide a$$ open for a td and Stafford didn’t even look at him!

Objective analysis on Stafford. He has hit three long plays downfield but they were all in zone coverage. Man to man coverage and Stafford is way off. Missed Chandler big time and made a bad read or else UGA was really in business. Stafford has talent but he has a lot to learn even in his Sophomore year.

You can’t fault the defense tonight,Bobo’s calling a very weak game as of the start of the 4th quarter.

I have to admit. Ever since the Lou Holtz era, and you can research all the games we have done this, we ALWAYS give up 3rd and long. Take it from a USC fan, this has happened over and over and over the last decade.

jdbts Stafford hasn’t hit any long pass,he’s hit three flat trajectory mid-range but no long, touch, timed routes.Threr’s objective and there’s facts.

Have to say you’re right about Mitchell jdbfs, he’s playing one hell of a game. You just can’t say enough about those 2 years difference in age. A world of difference in decision making.

Once again the a-hole has humiliated us….this one hurts.Stafford’s inability to throw that lofted, timed, deep ball limited that last drive. If Spurrier had our offensive players the Cocks would have won by thirty.

Congrats to the Gamecocks! The better team won tonight for sure! I told you not to overlook and underestimate us. We were better than UGA in every phase of the game.

Hunk Erdown —I watched Bradford, a rs freshman throw the deep lofted pass time after time for Oklahoma today. He did it last week too and that was the first college game he’d ever played in .Stafford has been with the team since jan-06.Last year a freshman played great for Texas,David Green played great in his second year for Richt.Stafford has 5 TDs in the last 6 games, top QBs get the ball into the end zone more than that. There were 3 times tonight Stafford had good opportunities at TD’s he missed 2 and didn’t see the receiver the 3rd time.If he had made 2 of those we win.

When Spurrier said :we match up well against Georgia we just hadn’t done it lately: he clearly was saying they are better coached.Mark Bradley wrote about how different Steve is now.Mr Bradley I’ve said before and I’ll say again you’ve got the worst judgement of any writer I know of.

OWIE, MY HINEY-HOLE HURTS

Congrats Gamecocks… jdbfs, gary, chrissy, all of you. Your team wanted it worse than our guys, no excuses from me. Great game.

Stafford has been over rated by me at least. I really thought that he would come out this year and be “the man”. Tonight Mitchell took him to school. Those gamecock running backs are awesome. I feel like we could have won the game with better play calling, a better performance by Stafford, and better blocking and tackling. I just cannot understand why we run a play that works so well then don’t run it again. The fake-a-ruskie was a bust for the first time and the corners, linebackers, he!!, the whole defense for USC played a masterful game. Kudos Gamecocks, you beat us and I have to admit you beat us even with the refs leaning our way with some calls and non calls. For UGA to see film of La-La and USC, realize that we coud sweep around the end, do it on two plays very well, but limit it to two tries baffles me. Chandler was prepared to have the game of his life, was wide open all night, but we negate that, and it frustrates me. Maybe we can regroup and salvage a decent season, but we have some training to do, some film to study, and some soul searching to do. I love my dawgs and tonite hasn’t changed that one whit, but we have work to do.

Good luck gamecocks on the rest of your schedule, enjoyed the banter, hope you won’t rub it in too bad on us, remembering that tonite is one out of the last 6, but enjoy your win, and don’t get locked up celebrating too much. See ya next year in your house. Hope you’ll treat us with the same good times and class that you have in the past.

You notice that Stafford throws more accurately into traffic than if the guy is wide open? Not a good sign…

Watching LSU-VT…We of the SEC East are outclassed…Saw you Dawgs with USC…Coach steve’s Cocks played a good D. Stafford does better on the roll vs pocket. We Vols are not blowing ‘em out but we’re up. Auburn..? I said prior to opener Dawgs roll into Knoxville 4-1…Sorry Buck…LSU looks to be the team to beat in the SEC tonight…and I don’t see any of us East teams capable at the early juncture…Back to the bunker

I was just watching LSU and thinking the same thing Gen…

I don’t know about Tenn., but our guys are very young and hopefully can grow up soon. Our coaches are good, but got out coached tonite. Our QB can throw a missle, but right now its not a guided missle. The defense of USC had some holes we could have exploited, but it seemed like, for the most part, we played right into their teeth instead of playing to their weakness.

Hunk Erdown

With the exception of Chris Brown (TE), Foster (RB), Ainge (QB) on offense and another handful on defense, we’re young, too. We both are looking to tomorrow when one sees the play of LSU…But they say it’s early. Will it matter..? I’m not gonna put LSU in the BCSNC game quite yet, but they do look good. The SEC East winner will have their hands full in the Dome…Whoever comes out of the West just may be the team to beat…Sorry, gtdc
