UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Unknowns can make ‘07 exciting
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s official. College football season has arrived. And I’m not talking about those pretender games that were on ESPN Thursday night. The real deal is this weekend. And, for me, it became official when I saw my first RV, Georgia flags a-flappin, rolling into Athens on Highway 316 this morning. Man, that gets your blood pumping!
This is the time of year I love most in college football. Some people worry about all the unknowns. I love the unknowns! That’s why we show up, isn’t it?
And boy does Georgia have some unknowns! Which Matthew Stafford will show up, the one that threw 12 picks and only 4 TDs in his first nine games or the one that oversaw wins over Auburn, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech to end the year? And what about that offensive line? I don’t think I have ever seen a greener bunch start for the Bulldogs ever. Well, at least not since 1990, Ray Goff’s second season, and we all know what happened that year.
And how ‘bout that defense? Brand new defensive ends, brand new linebackers, two new corners and a new free safety. And they’ll be facing an Okie State offense that averaged 200 and 200 in rushing and passing last year!
That’s what I like about the Dogs’ opener against Oklahoma State. This is a dangerous game for Georgia. The Pokes can flat out play. They’re strong where the Dogs are weak and vice versa. But the interregional flavor is what I like about it the most. Big 12 versus SEC. Our way of life versus theirs!
I spent some time cruising Oklahoma State message boards and newspaper sites that cover the Cowboys this morning and, I’m here to tell you, this is a media base and a fan base that really believes they can take down the Dogs between the hedges. There’s some trash-talkin’ going on, and it’s going both ways!
What do YOU think? Do the Dogs win despite all their obvious youth and flaws? Are you worried about Georgia in this one? Or are you like me and you just love the pomp and circumstance and the complete do-over that every college football season is?
Oh, yeah, and this: 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms. Who does that favor and would it deter you from attending the game?
I’ll be checking in later. Let’s hear it folks!

Chip, sounds like you are as excited as I am. I would think rain would help the dawgs if it would make the cowboys more towards one-dimentional. Would you mind posting some of the Okie sites you refered to. I’m sure it would be good reading. Thanks

We’ve heard no end to how explosive the offense is and how much experience their O has this year. But what I don’t hear about is their number 2’s. What is the skill level of their backups? Anyone know? Their starters can’t possible play the whole game and if their 2’s don’t have the talents and skills of the 1’s I believe they’ll be in trouble as soon as they start subbing. I think BoBo will go after their 2’s and exploit the weekness. My two cents.

Guys,
Getting ready to hit the road myself. I wanted to drop a quick line and say UGA 27 OSU 20. I think its the passing game setup by the run that is our key. OSU out gains us, but a couple of turnovers is the undoing for them. Thats my take, guys enjoy the game and the Labor Day Weekend.
P.S. -General and Buck…GO VOLS!

What a boring game last night. Les Miles vs Sylvester Croom was a matchup of the two worst coaches in the SEC. If I hadn’t have watched the game, I would have thought that LSU is going to be unstopable this year. Talent will help Miles hold onto his job for another two years.

A lot of people are comparing this to the Boise St opener two years ago…not even close. This Oklahoma St team is for real. This could be one of the best offenses we see this year, just behind Florida. We are a green team, but I would like to think of it as more of a “blue team”. We are loaded with blue chip prospects that have been patiently waiting in the wings to show Georgia fans why the celebrated when these kids signed. The upside is tremendous. Even if this year is shaky, the next two years will be unbelievable. As for the rain, there is no way that will deter me or any of the Bulldog nation from attending. The buzz in Athens is tremendous and Sanford will provide the Cowboys with the most intense environment they have ever experienced.

If Georgia protects the ball, and does not drop key passes, Georgia wins, plain and simple. If Georgia struggles or loses, I bet turnovers are the key driver. The Kentucky and Vanderbilt debacles last year were a direct result of dropped passes and turnovers.
While Ga is young, there are alot of guys on the field that while they did not start last year, they have played and know what it feels like in Sanford Stadium. I think OSU will try alot of misdirection, reverses, bootleg, and likely a couple of trick plays on offense to catch our DB’s asleep. Surely, our guys will be looking for it.
I expect OSU to rack up some yards between the 30’s, but not alot of points. I think Reid will have to have a great game to keep it close. I don’t think their offensive line is probably that great… Reid likely scrambled out of alot of sacks (ala Shockley) last year to give their O line better stats. Be interesting whether our smallish but quick DEs and LBs can harass (and tackle) Reid.
Eveyone knows the offensive line issues, but there are still 2 pretty seasoned guys there and don’t forget about Sutherland who will be providing some of the more critical blocking to free the tailbacks. Yes, there will be some off-sides and motion penalties, but likely a better result than what is anticipated.
My worry is breaking in a new punter. However, I think our special teams otherwise will be solid and could break the game open mid-way through 3rd quarter.
Weather probably is neutral to either team. Both teams skill players are pretty experienced and shouldn’t let some rain cause them to do something stupid. Don’t know how much we practiced in wet conditions but I know there was some. Field won’t be impacted at all. It will only be an issue if its coming down in buckets on a critical drive…
Dawgs win it 31 - 24.

I too have been the OSU message board, orangepower.com is pretty entertaining. They are very confident that they will win this game. The national media is also confident in OSU. I am predicting a GA win. I am not sure how close the game will be, but I would like to see us run the ball down their throats and keep that dangerous O off the field. I think Stafford will play well and I am very confident in our D. Maybe the rain will be a good thing for us. It might keep Bowman in check. Go Dawgs I am excited. I’m leaving for Athens after I get off work at five it should be a long 3 hours.

With Tebow at QB Florida’s offense is nowhere close to the level of OK State’s. This is the best offesne we will face all year, I would put Florida about 4th or 5th unless they get a new QB. Remember they couldn’t score on us last year with a good QB

Tomorrow’s game should be very interesting. Just like everyone else, I am curious to see how our offensive line holds up. I truly believe our defense will be just fine. We have some tremendous athletes at every position on the defensive side of the ball. We will make some mistakes but in the end, we have more horses than the Cowboys. Stafford rips apart Okie St. secondary and the world will be introduced to the greatness of Knowshon Moreno. Bulldogs struggle early but roll 34-17.

Rain would help the Dawgs. We need to play a ball control game. Run the rock and work some play action into the plan. If the weather is anything like today it is going to be perfect. The babybacks will be on the smoker by ten and then we’ll sip some Makers and talk football. I hope you all have a great Labor Day weekend and let’s kick some OSU a@#.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Okie State flat out play themselves into a barely over .500 record last year with a non-conference schedule that included Missouri State, Arkansas State, Florida Atlantic, and Houston? Mmmm…creampuffs are good. Yeah, I thought so. Alot of good that high powered offense did them, eh.
Seriously, are we talking about the same team here Chip?

I think the most exciting thing about this game is the unknowns. It could be a huge win ala Boise St. or it could be a nail biter like Co last year. No matter what happens, I’ll be yelling for my Dawgs.
I had a prediction of 33-27 before the weather updates, I’m trimming 10 off of each side if it rains.

MeanMachine,
Couldn’t agree more. Everybody seems to forget that even though we only have 3 “starters” back on defense, most of the new starters, and a decent number of the backups have been in the system for at least a year or two and have seen legit time between the hedges.
As far as offense goes, I’m not as worried about our offensive line as some people are. We’ve got a game-proven senior “quarterbacking” the line at center in Velasco. He and Stafford will keep the youngins on task, and Sutherland and Brown will do a good job of picking up the blitz when necessary. Not to mention, with the quick release and the rocket arm that Stafford has, he won’t need a lot of time in the pocket.
“Starters” or not, we’ve got a lot of talent with legit playing time under their belts on both sides of the ball. OSU has played some good teams (and lost to them all, I might add) but their not ready for the speed or physicality of SEC football.
Man I can’t wait for that lone trumpet and 6:45….GO DAWGS!!!!

If OSU is so good why are they barely breaking the top 50 team barrier in the nation. Is UGA overrated or OSU underrated with only a six point spresd. If UGA wins by a touchdown or less it will a big burst in the bubble. UGA should dominate OSU if they want national recognition.

Wes, I’m getting chills just thinking about the Lone Trumpet. Everyone is talking about our young D, but no one mentions OSU’s D. Their D Line is just as green as our O Line without the blue chip players. This should give our line some confidence going into USC.

I think our denfense against their offense is the biggest key to the game.If we had a veteran O-line I’d agree with what seems to be the majority who think ball control offense is key.Thing is I think about the odds. What are the odds a group of green linemen can control the clock ? Then I ask myself if this athletic bunch on defense can disrupt their offense. It just seems like we have a better shot at disruption than control. That said,of course we try to establish a running game and I have confidence in coach Bobo and Searles, again I’m just thinking odds and what’s most likely. ok state is a good team, but this team with all of that offense won only 7 games last year and one was against a pretty pathetic alabama team. read ching’s blog for some real info on how they actually performed. http://ching-athens.blogspot.com/
David Ching exposes them for what they are. They play great and put up points on sorry defense, but they don’t do that much against decent defenses, much less great ones like that at UGA.

MeanMachine,
I put up a post a few days ago about what I think the key to a dawg win will be. We’ve seen our share of “Bowman’s” in the past few years…Calvin Johnson and Sidney Rice come to mind. I have no doubt, especially given the speed of our LBs and DBs, that Richt and Martinez will have a good game plan, even without Paul Oliver, in place to deal with their star receiver.
I think it comes down to the play of our defensive ends. If Roderick Battle and Marcus Howard can get a good rush on Bobby Reid, and contain him on broken down pass plays and designed QB runs, we should be set.
I’m not saying it’ll be a walk in the park…any team that averages 200 and 200 in a season, regardless of their conference, has a good offense. As long as our ends aren’t caught out of position and can keep Reid between the tackles, we should be able to keep their offense in check.

Before we start shaking in fear about this unstoppable offense, let’s remember that Oklahoma State only won 7 regular season games last year and only won 2 of 6 away games. Then they barely beat an unranked AL by 3 in a bowl game. I’m not saying we should overlook them, but I don’t think they’re our scariest opponent this year, either.

Are you guys anxious? I know I am but we are truely excited to play at UGA.
This is huge for us and we will be prepared….that’s why I am calling the OSU win a mild upset.
Yeah Yeah Yeah…I know how athtletic UGA is…but both teams strengths matchup up to each others weakness.
The difference is that last year - our offense was good - but young. Now we have everybody back in our strength area and should be better as we gained huge amount of experience against UGA type teams (OK, TX, NE).
Our defense makes me very nervous…but our replacements are upgrades from last year. And we had an awesome camp…..but again, defensively, we will not be setting the world on fire….but neither will UGA with all that you guys are replacing.
The difference…..your OL is a little green and it will take a few games for your athletic defense to gel. OSU offense will click and our defense will be stubborn enough against your green OL to slow you down to where we win a close one!!!!
I sense we are catching UGA at a great time to get the upset.
Write it down!!! OSU 31 - UGA 28 in one heck of a game!!!
One last thing - go UGA against TN & FL - the only team I like in orange is OSU (although Auburn is easy to root for because they got hosed a few years ago).
GO POKES!!!!!

Hey fellow Dawg fans, I just got on those 2 websites that Chip pasted, and he is absolutely correct. Those folks are very confident, if not borderline cocky. I think the key will be getting some pressure on Reid and disrupting him. The other key will be our offensive line. I sure hope Coach Searels has these guys ready to play. We may be young & inexperienced in some areas, but we can make up for it by using good technique & playing hard. Unfortunately, I cannot make this game, but will have the surround sound & ESPN2 cranked up in my living room. I will be at the Dawgs-Cocks game, and sure hope that we’re not 0-1 headed into the showdown with the chickens. GO DAWGS!

CowPoke Fan,
Welcome. One thing you’ll learn quickly about true dawg fans is that we always enjoy a good pre-game debate. Especially before the season opener.
I do have to say a few things (wouldn’t be football season without trash talk.) First, I’m a little upset that you would consider Nebraska to be a “UGA type team.” I would consider them an “Oklahoma State type team” (notice the subtle trash talk) but not a UGA type team, at least not during the Richt Era.
Second, (more subtle trash talk coming) didn’t you lose to Oklahoma and Texas last year?

Does OSU run alot of no huddle? Also, which conference supplies the refs for this game? I know that Richt went away from no-huddle because you must put some time in there between plays to allow substitutions. Just wondering because we probably would like to switch out our interior D linemen alot… Does SEC have a tighter rule on no-huddle or is that an NCAA rule in terms of setting the ball for play?

I have to second what Wes said to the cowpoke fan. It’s good to have an opposition fan on the blog with more to offer than some of the stuff we have all seen posted by others. I think we will win, but there is no way I would bet on it. There are too many unknowns. If the talent clicks and the dogs get momentum… it could be Boise State II. It could also go the other way if penalties on the O-line kill every drive and we force Stafford to have to constantly try to save us on third and long. The thing that is really interesting to me is the effect the new kickoff rule will have on the game. We could do some serious damage returning kicks and blow this thing out if some of our speed breaks loose and we control field position. Only Larry can give voice to the mysteries and anxieties of such an opener… the countdown is almost over.

Okay, I’ve held my peace about as long as I can…GO DAWGS, SIC ‘EM. WOOF, WOOF, WOOF.
Now I feel much better.
I read this blog and all Dawg Reports from the AJC and Athens Banner Herald daily to try to get as complete a picture as possible of our team’s progression in practices and here’s my thought…
Guys, we’re getting better day. I get feeling, not just from what’s begin said, but from what’s not being said. Sure our O-line is green and in some cases, a little small. But for the first time, we’re entering the year with most of them HEALTHY! Remember past years when all almost everyone would have a bad knee, ankle, shoulder, etc., etc. This year, only Scott Haverkamp is seriously gimpy and I can live with that. Here’s my point: what good is experience when that experienced lineman is playing at 60-75%? I’ll take a young, hungry, healthy inexperienced lineman playing at 100% anytime.
And I too think the D will be just fine. Unlike OK State’s D line, these guys have significant playing time under their belts. And frankly, they’re looking to make a statement. Many of them have underachieved as back-ups and sometime starters and are looking to make the positions their own. I think this game is the perfect platform for a “statement” game.
God, I’m pumped! I think I’ll mix up a pitcher of margaritas in anticipation of tonight’s slate of lollipop games and sedate myself until 6:45 tomorrow night.
Did I already say, GO DAWGS!!!!
If so, pardon my redundancy. :-)

Ugagal,
Good points about the O-line. Another thing to keep in mind, the line may be young, but this is the first time in a while that I can remember DEPTH on the o-line not being too much of an issue. We should be able to keep a good rotation of fresh legs on the line throughout the game, and it should help that the D-line for OSU is relatively inexperienced as well.

Appreciate the feedback…..regarding NE - they played a whale of a bowlgame against AUBURN and were in a position to win the game at the end - which tells me there is parity. We beat, make that spanked, NE last year and outplayed OK - but lost that one in a nail biter. Our self inflicted mistakes really cost us in that game.
OSU will be improved this year…and again - opening against UGA is great as it has given our team urgency and focus.
We can play with the big boys and all I am saying is that we are catching UGA at a great time due to your OL situation and your Defense rebuild/reload - which will take a game or two to gel.
We are not Boise State - When Boise palyed UGA - they played that first half like a deer caught in the headlights. They got caught up in the SEC Hype and just had a nightmare first half….make that first quarter. But they learned from it and beat OK in the bowl games of bowl games last year.
OSU plays in bigtime venues - TX, OK, NE, TEXAM. Big12 not as deep as the SEC - but our top 3 can go toe to toe with any conferences top 3. SEC’s top 6 can go toe to toe with any conferences top 3 - therein lies the difference in the SEC to the rest of the conferences.
OSU needs to do the following to win:
Don’t panic between the hedges (see Boise State).
Play our game.
Win the turnover battle.
Corso needs to pick UGA (thanks Nascarfan - we feel the same as you on Corso picks).
If we can do the above 4 - we will win a squeeker. I am honest in telling you that playing you early in the season is to our advantage. If we played you mid season or end of season….advantage UGA as your team will be seasoned by then.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Go Pokes!!

About the most you can say about Tim Tebow at this early stage in his career is that he is one heck of a fullback. This year, we will actually get to see him play quarterback. We’ll see how that goes.

Cowpoke, I know you guys are not Boise boys. You practiced in the heat as we did. Boise was not prepared for the devils cauldron that is Sanford stadium on opening day. Might I suggest to you that you go to the bridge corner on the South side and look at the mausoleaum of entombed Uga’s, our beloved mascot. It is really worth the look. Please be nice to the hedges. There is a ground crew that does all the trimming they need. Most fans will treat you decently. Unfortunately, there will be the occasional over served fan who will show his behind. They are at every schools stadiums and somehow they do not administer an IQ test to get tickets. My crazy Marine brother and I just about beat the fool out of one of those one afternoon after the drunk started using foul language to an elderly opposing fan base couple. He apologised to us and the couple. Good thing for him.
The reason I think we win is coaching on the D-line. Coach Rodney will have those monsters ready to go. And our secondary is faster than any secondary we have ever had. I hope you enjoy your stay but I hope it is bittersweet with the Dawgs pulling it out in the fourth quarter. And just to throw in the voodoo, Coach Richt has never lost an opening home game. Oh and God wears silver britches. Have fun, come in here on Sunday if you can, we love disecting the coaches decisons. Our hindsight versus their foresight.

Georgia’s O line in 2003 was completely rebuilt with freshmen and redshirt freshmen. The best wound up being drafted in the fourth round 4 years later. We were the SEC Eastern Champions with a top ten finish that year.
By comparison, this year, 2 - 40% of the line are quality returning starters. Another is a junior who started as a freshman for a respectable division 1 program before attending juniopr college. The other 2 starters are a talented redshirt freshman - this is his 3rd year in the program - and a freshman who is very talented.
Everybody was nervous about our offensive line last year and we were good. Our offensive line is going to be good this year, probably better than last. Milner is the only offensive lineman from last year who will be playing on Sunday. This year we have several of them.

I think the O-line will be fine and Staffords bodyguard, Super Southerland will take care of the rest. Yes Knowshon will play. There is no way to keep that hoss off the field. I predict we run one kickoff back for a touchdown. Warp speed Mr. Sulu.

All about the LBs today. If we have indeed fixed this horrendous problem in Athens then we will see a dismantling the likes of the Boise St. opener. However, if our LBs show up with the same mind set as last year and allow Heisman performances out of either their QB or TB (both ARE capable of it) then we will have to hope we get the ball last.

As soon as the first notes are played on the trumpet and Munson’s voice fills the speakers, the stadium will go wild. The big screen will run the tape and by the time Herschel runs over Bill Bates the crowd will be in a frenzy. Who would not want to suit up and play between the hedges then? Did you guys see the interview on last night’s UT/Cal game of some tree hugging hippie who was protesting, along w/ his queer buddies, about how wrong it was for Cal to want to cut down some 75 year old oak tree’s that were planted right outside of their stadium in order to build a new athletic complex?? It was classic, I know it’s Cal-Berkely but I didnt know those smelly tree hugging Hilary voting hippies even existed anymore. Even Brent Mustburger thought the guy should have shut his pie hole. Too funny.

Jimmy,
I agree that the hippies got too much attention. Who knows, by the time the end of the season rolls around, there may be so many greasy freaks up there the tree may actually fall to the ground. They weren’t the only ones, however, to hog up the airwaves. My condolences go out to the victims, families, classmates and friends of the VT disaster, but c’mon, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
That tragedy is four months old, and they go on and on and on and on about it like it happened yesterday. Besides, it has nothing to do with football, just like Katrina last year. That and all the DUI commercials just about killed the annual “buzz” I get on college football’s opening weekend.

That’s ESPN for ya. They’d rather talk about “human interest” stories rather than just about good old fashion football. I guess its all about the ratings though. Dawgs looked good!! Tennessee got beat and Auburn was getting beat most of the game…I love it! Florida is still going to be hard to beat…they looked good.
Everyone ought to recognize the efforts by the Dawgs new line coach Stacy Searles. He did a hell of a job getting our young line ready to play yesterday. He is a heck of a coach.
I regretfully hope Jones gets punished though for that punch he threw when he floored that Oklahoma player. And contrary to what the AJC article says…it WAS a punch….a hell of a punch! It was not a proud moment to see that.

Lilburn Dawg,
The Cal Bears are a good enough team without the revenge factor thrown into the equation. Those guys were fired up. Still didn’t expect to see UT give up so much. Bears ranking may be legit, but I’ll bet they couldn’t handle an SEC slate week after week.
Not sure what to make of the Auburn game. K-State’s defense spent a lot of time in AU’s backfield, or so it seemed. The Tigers have a very favorable schedule to work with until they land in the Swamp on week five.
Speaking of the Swamp, the Gator’s strengths (and weaknesses) are difficult to gauge against a team like WKU. Then again, you could say the same about Michigan vs. App. State. I’ll reserve judgement on Tebow until he faces a real (SEC) defense for a whole game.
Oh well, looks like Lumpkin’s broken thumb has thrown a wrench into the RB depth chart. Caleb’s redshirt is fading fast! He may have seen playing time against Carolina this week if he wasn’t injured earlier.
Coaches are still iffy. We’ll see.

Actually R. Jones was defending himself. That Okie St. player hit and shoved R. Jones first but Jones was called for it ( the retailater always does). Jones was just letting that fella know he was not a push over. But in the near future he has to be careful because that type of hit could cause you a play, yards or even the game.
He just has to play smarter next time maybe sneak a punch this time.
