UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Richt: This team young but talented

Just returned to the office from Georgia’s pre-game press conference over at Stegeman Coliseum. As always, the session started off with coach Mark Richt addressing the media in a somewhat formal session, then breaking out into one-on-one interviews with selected players.

The theme of Richt’s first presser of the 2007 season was the enormous amount of youth and inexperience on this year’s squad. Richt estimated that we will see between 18 and 20 freshmen play in the Bulldogs’ season opener Saturday evening (6:45 p.m.) against Oklahoma State. He wasn’t sure but thought that is probably the most he’s fielded since becoming Georgia’s head coach in 2001.

“A lot of it has to do with us redshirting an awful lot of players last year,” Richt said. “But I think there’s at least seven true freshmen that are either going to start or play. It bodes well for the future — I hope.”

Yes, but what about the here and now?

“Does it concern me?,” Richt said. “Yes. But I like the way they’ve practiced… . I feel better now than I did when camp started… . If the pressure doesn’t get to them, then I think they’ll be OK.”

Richt went on to say he believed Georgia would be a very good team four or five games into the season when the many young players will have gained a measure of experience. But opening with a team like Oklahoma State, considered one of the best teams in the Big XII, then following with an SEC slugfest against South Carolina, means the Dogs’ young pups will have to grow up on the job.

“Some will perform on a lower level than they’ve been practicing, but a lot of them will perform a whole lot better,” Richt said. “We just don’t know who those guys are yet.”

Richt lauded the talent the Cowboys will be bringing to Sanford Stadium.

“This is a team there’s a lot of buzz around and for a lot of reasons,” he said. “mainly because they have one of the best offenses in the country.”

In addition to ballyhooed offensive stars such as quarterback Bobby Reid, tailback Dantrell Savage and wide receiver Adarius Bowman, Richt singled out Okie State linemen David Koenig and Russell Okung for their abilities. Richt also said the Pokes’ defense, among the worst in the Big XII last season, “Has a lot to prove. They’ve been hearing it a bunch.”

“They have a lot of momentum right now,” richt said. “they finished strong last year, improved on their record from the year before and are trying to make a name for themselves nationally and in their league.”

In depth chart news, Richt said redshirt freshman NaDerris Ward will start at tight end and Brian Mimbs “will punt the first punt” rather true freshman Drew Butler. Butler, however, will likely get a chance as well.

In conclusion, Richt said: “It’s going to be exciting for everybody, even the coaching staff. We don’t know what’s going to happen.”

That’s all for now. Carter will be providing a practice update later.

I still think we will be fine on defense. If our offense can run the ball we will be fine. I am confident that Bobo will give Stafford and the receivers plenty of opportunities to move the ball through the air. Dang…is it Saturday yet!? Let’s play some ball. Go Dawgs!

We may be young but coaching plays a hugh part in what happens. This will show what the coaching staff is made of for sure. Martinez seems to have the defense working every year (with a few adjustments here and there) and this year shouldn’t be any different. That young O-line is very well coached. I think people have been focusing on the personel there and forgetting about the coach. Searles is one of the best in the country.

I’ll tell everyone why I’m so confident heading into Saturday. We’ll be very hard to prepare for on offense. Reading Chip’s article in the paper yesterday, Richt made a good point. The OK. St. defensive coordinator can’t just watch film from last year and say “this is what UGA will do” because we’ve got a new OC who will deploy new schemes and use different formations. Not even Richt professes to know what the offense is gonna do. Plus, Bobo will be coaching from the box, where he’ll be able to see things a lot clearer and he can exploit certain weaknesses and other tendencies. This is the same reason that the Patriots have been so good during the Belichick era, especially on defense. They give offensive teams fits because Belichick isn’t afraid to switch up looks and defensive formations. Sure, the scheme might break down into the same result, but when you give different looks, it makes it difficult for the team on the other side of the ball to anticipate what’s coming. That’s why I’m very comfortable with our offense being able to score points.

And I think our defense will be fine as long as Martinez shows the ability to make adjustments from time to time and blitz in the right situations. I am not worried about our Dlinemen because Garner will ALWAYS have them ready to play and we are stockpiled with talent. The LBs will be underrated this year and they’ll compensate for a few shortcomings with their speed. The DBs (I’m not sold on Flowers manning one of the corners) should be OK as long as Kelin keeps them in check. I think what people don’t understand about our defense is that while there may not have been many starters that have returned, there are some players who’ll be starting this year that have considerable game experience. So I think that’ll make us just fine.

Is it Saturday yet?!?!?!?

Noyellow, your “coached up” comment is dead on. That will be the difference. And IMO, I like our coaching staff’s chances against anybody.

That OSU offense is nothing nice. 200+yds on the ground and 200+ yds in the air…and a QB that can run. We win if we do well offensively, and I think we will. If this defense steps up, the Dawgs will have some momentum heading into the USC game, but with all of the distractions going on over there recently, they may not be in the right mindset anyhow.

Buck you need 2 more true freshmen to play for your number of 10 to come through.

I think that we have to keep this in perspective. Think about how many upper classmen some of these freshman had to outplay in practice to earn a starting job or playing time.

I know this is not the subject of this blog, but this OSU team is starting to scare me. Pre-game jitters, I guess. What is the difference between the OSU offense and those high powered offenses that Texas Tech had a few years back?

By Palmetto State Dawg

OSU also racked up all those yards on Big 12 opponents. They haven’t seen speed like they are going to see on Saturday. Just ask Ohio State.

By A-ville Ranger

August 28, 2007 5:10 PM | Link to this

The key to beating the Pokes last year was containing the qb Bobby Reid. When he was held below 175 yards in total offense they were 1-4.I see this game as being won or lost by the play of our D-line.Martinez is the guy who has to come through. If he can devise ways to disrupt the OK ST offense and force them to react, I like our chances. If we’re forced back on our heels in reaction mode too much it could get ugly and end badly.

By RAWDawg

August 28, 2007 5:17 PM | Link to this

I agree, Palmetto… overall team speed will be a big factor in this one. The DAWGS will be fast on both sides of the ball- I will be looking for a big play to open things up in the first couple of series, and if it hits, it will take some serious wind out of the Pokes’ proverbial sails. If that happens, look out! 93,000 will be raucous on Saturday in Sanford Stadium!!!

Great stuff guys. In the coaches we trust. Young talent old guys who have been in the sytem for 3 or 4 years, is doesn’t matter. The coaching staff is one of the best in the country!

Fabris won’t say it, but we have a GEM in Demarcus Dobbs and I predict him starting by the 3rd or 4th game.

He will be a all sec performer and might become a AA by his senior season.

I think that coaching will get us past the Cowboys in the opener. We won’t have that luxury when we meet the g’cocks. If our freshmen perform well against them, I like our chances the rest of the way.

By puppydawg

With all those youngsters and our inexperienced D, we just need to move the chains with our trio of RBs & just enough passes to keep the Pokes honest. Plus, we need to save a little something for the evil one when he comes to visit next week. That’s just how I see it but I know that whatever Coach Bobo has in mind will work just fine.

Practice update: The players went in shells this afternoon instead of the typical full pads. Sean Bailey (concussion), Thomas Flowers (shoulder) and Darius Dewberry (shoulder) were the first team players still in green. All are expected to be fine by Saturday’s game. Bo Stansell, who was heavily involved in the kick off race, was in a green. He did not take any kicks in prepractice. Brandon Coutu and Ben Wilson were taking most of the kicks.

First, I’m a huge college football fan so I’m looking forward to being in a great football atmosphere. That said, I think several Dawg fans might be overlooking the Big 12 — especially the South division. Sure, Baylor is the weak sister there but the other five are fairly solid to very good teams: Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Texas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Of those, Texas A&M might have one of the best atmospheres in all of college football. Add to that playing Nebraska twice every four years and I think it’s safe to say Oklahoma State won’t be a stranger to hostile environments. (For anyone who hasn’t been to game in College Station, you should check it out.)

As for the competition level, don’t forget that Oklahoma State didn’t play a great game but still beat Alabama in the Independence Bowl. The OSU offense seemed to do well against a quality SEC defense there. In addition, don’t forget that Kansas State, while down last year, fields a solid defense every year. Last, both Texas and the Sooners have top-notch defenses year-in and year-out.

One last thing: Some friends decided to tag along at the last minute with us and don’t have tickets. I’ve found several online (eBay, StubHub, etc.) but am not sure if I should buy now or try to buy from scalpers at the game. Suggestions?

Oh, and what places are going to be places to check out while I’m there. I have to apologize that I’ve been busy lately and have slacked a little on researching local bars and the like. Any input would be great.

OK Dawg Fans..and anyone else who bleeds RED & BLACK!.. This is HOW its gonna go down starting sat.night..First..it DOES NOT start at 6:45…we GOTTA get them HEDGES juiced as soon as the DAWG WALK starts…let our guys AND anyone wearing orange KNOW that the 12 MAN is hear and is gonna be heard!!! .. Second..we gotta make them ONE-Demensional(spell check if needed LOL)…STOP THE RUN STOP THE RUN STOP THE RUN!!!..in a battle of QBs passing the rock I DEFINITLY like our Stafford to shoot the lights out over Reid…Third.. we GOTTA double Bowman ( He is THAT good ) … Forth.. Be alert for screens … they will try to exploit our inexperience and over-eagerness..we gots HELLA-Speed on defense but you negate speed with screens and misdirection so we gotta play under control there..and last..we are not gonna make every play and when /if things start going bad DAWG Fans gotta show our boys that WE GOT THEIR BACK…NO BOOING..Be THE 12-MAN of ALL 12-MEN… our house can be every bit as intimidating as Death Valley or The Swamp…far too often Sanford Stadium has not been ROCKIN’ like we KNOW it not only can but SHOULD..we are blessed with a great leader who has shown that he not only can get the athletes but can also coach them to win championships…deep down we KNOW we got the team..and with a little bit ( NO A LOT ) of help from the 12-MAN then we can TRULY take our rightful place ATOP the pigskin world…last night I was in Tulsa and tomorrow I will be in Oklahoma City and the feeling I’m getting and seeing is that they THINK the cowboys can hang but I’m not so sure they BELIEVE that they can..we Dawg Fans not only think but BELIEVE we will win!..in reading the local paper in Tulsa last night I read where OSU was piping crowd noise in their practices this week in preparation for saturday night..and I was thinking ‘that ain’t gonna do us justice!’..so lets show em what it means to BE A BULLDOG ON SATURDAY NIGHT! puppy-d——It will be great if we can play ball control offense and keep the ball away from the Pokes.I think it would be a big mistake to count on that though.First off the line is very green, second the defense should be ahead of the offense this time of year anyway. The best chance we have is to take what the OSU’s defense gives and play a disruptive defense and not let their QB play in his comfort zone……Chip mentioned the other day how these D-linemen remind him of the great athletic FSU lines from years past.Take a page from them and pressure the hell out of their offense. We also have the athletes at linebacker and in the secondary to play containment once Bobby Reid (the qb)is flushed out.

I am pretty sure these Dawgs are going to look a lot different than last year as far as schemes go and the level of intensity. Do not forget the last three of 06. Those were a glimpse of what we are in for with Bobo calling the plays and CMR keeping WM and the rest of the staff involved and advising of any changes needed. I can’t wait. I’m not sleeping well, and I have this recurring urge to yell GOOO DAWGS at work this week. I think I will hold it till I get ready to leave on Friday then let all my Clemson and Carolina compadres get an ear full. I see that the Bulldawg nation is not impressed with OSU coming to town. We have simply ‘racked’ up yardage and points in the ‘weak’ Bid 12. The Big 8/Big 12 has won 6 national titles in the last 17 seasons. The SEC is a close second with 5 titles. Since 2000 The Big 12 has won 2 titles and the SEC 2 as well. Oklahoma won a title in 2000 against a great FSU team that only scored 2 points! The offensive coordinator was no other than Mark Richt.

All I hear is that the Big 12 has no team speed compared to the SEC. Go play Oklahoma & Texas every year. Texas A&M isn’t shabby either. The Talent that comes out of Texas High Schools is as good as it gets in the country.

I predict we will silence Sanford Stadium. Your linebackers heads are going to be spinning from the offensive fireworks! You can cheer all you want, but it will be Cowboy Orange running down the sideline! OSU 41 UGA 27

Well said Georgia girl. There should be absolutely no booing this year. There also should be alot of noise for 60 minutes. Some of our fans have really disappointed me the last 2 years. As for the freshmen, there should be no concerns. The ones we know are ready like Jones, Banks, Moreno and Sturdivant are getting their chances to shine. Some of the others will get in a play or two here and there to see how they play in a real game. It’s not like we are going to play 18-20 freshmen extensively.

I am kind of concerned about letting Brandon Coutu do any kick-offs! Just seems foolish unless he is really much better than anyone else. He is one of the most valuable players on the team from a scoring perspective, its like having Stafford play on special teams! Well, almost.

I”m sure they know what they are doing, but I would keep the guy for the automatic 3 pointers from the 50 yard line. For sure.

I HAVE A CONFESSION……..I’m a die hard ‘Dawg lover, live in this beautiful state, work in God’s country (Georgia!), have had season tix for many years….but…..I was born in Ohio…..a town called Massillon, where football was really started (don’t buy the Canton crap, that’s like sayin’ Bama’s the bomb). Every boy born in Massillon gets a Massillon Tiger football in his crib in the hospital. That’s some serious football up there. But…..by the grace of God alone, I was moved to the Peach State as a youngster and have been indelibly a ‘Dawg ever since. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been disheartened by the BOO’s at hallowed Sanford Stadium when times were tough. This includes the Goff and Donnan years. I’ve had seats behind the recruits, and folks, I’m here to tell you they notice that stuff, and, regretfully I must admit, how “dead” it is when a UK or Vandy come to town. ‘Dawg Nation, we need to make our house a complete h e double hockey sticks (hell!) for ANYONE that comes into our backyard!!!! This is our sacred ground! Let us unite as one big Red DAWG and slap some ‘Pokes around. ANYONE REMEMBER THE LSU GAME 2004???? CBS had the sound level displayed but I remember the friggin’ stadium shaking, that’s what we as fans and more importantly, Dawg lovers (please, no Vick jokes!) need to bring to the table EACH and EVERY game! Tired of seeing folks SITTING?? during a game. Let’s make our house, THE house!

Just for grins……let us remember that many of our “freshman” have game experience, they have superb coaching (IMHO, second to none in this country), and are fantastic student-athletes. I’m cautiously optimistic about this year and all the years to come, but irregardless of the outcome………WE ARE GEORGIA!!!!!!!

Go Dawgs! Go Munson, live to be 200!!!!! “….man is there gonna be some furniture destroyed tonight….”

oh btw…don’t buy the hype where I was born? My Grandma would woop your arse….check out www.massillontigers.com for the history!

I think this game will be a squeaker like when Clemson came to town a few years back. Plus, that was one of the loudest times I’ve heard Sanford Stadium and I imagine it will be rockin Saturday too.

Hey Pups…here is some reality.

You’ll be out-gunned by Okie State.

You won’t be physical enough to be Tebow/Florida.

And this year, you’ll be out-smarted by the mighty, mighty yellow jackets!

Enjoy your Music City Bowl.

UGA is great in August, that is true.

UGA is also great in Sept. I can’t remember UGA losing a game in Sept in like 5-6 years. Can you name one? tech has lost a lot of games in Sept.

UGA is pretty good in January too, where the DAWGS have ranked in final AP poll in the top 10 four of the last five seasons…tech? not so much. No top 10 finishes.

A-ville, I’m witcha on taking what the defense gives but the scenario I described would be my first approach. I would like to see rushing account for about 75% of our offense. Obviously, if OSU stacks the line or does something insane like put 8 in the box, we burn ‘em deep. I would still like to see us stay as vanilla as possible for this one, keeping something in our back pocket for the evil genious next week.

Buck in the NW.

I was just trying to stir up the Dawg nation. No disrespect intended. I defenitly respect UGA’s tradition and am looking forward to being impressed with their game-day atmosphere.

OSU had a similar returning team in 2003 and opened at Nebraska. We thought we a good chance to win, but lost 17-7. Although Neb played poorly, 15 yard fumble ret for TD and 15 yard TD drive after TO. But OSU played worse.

I’m looking forward to just soaking it all in. Who knows what will happen with the bouncing ball? Are Bulldawg fans feeling uneasy that Dooley will be missing for the first time in 43 years? Sounds like some story out of Bedlam.

Cowboy Magic:

First of all, let me say that there is no lack of respect for the Big 12. We all respect the members of your conference and realize that this is no Mountain West we’re dealing with.

That being said, you’re delusional if your think that any team will come into Sanford Stadium and blow Georgia out. That’s only happened twice in the Richt era: against national champion LSU in the SEC championship in 2003 and against the best Auburn team ever (13-0) in 2004, a team that won the SEC and finished 3rd in the nation. Do you think that OSU is at that level? Unless you have a +5 turnover margin, I think not. It may be a war, and you may win, but it’s more than arrogant to predict a Cowboy blowout. It’s downright stupid.

I agree wholeheartedly with HeelDawg…and to nip this in the bud…the game last year against Fat Phil’s boys was due to our giving excellent field position to the Vowels via turnovers. If OK State pulls it off, it’ll be a nail bitin’ experience. I respect the Big 12 much more than the Big 11 (Ten, I believe they call themselves), but, look at the Dawgs history against your conference and it doesn’t bode well for the Stillwater slingers (I still see that UGA triumph over Texas vividly…was in Dallas when we did it!)

Cowboy Magic, I didn’t take what you said as a lack of respect. My point is that Dawgs are pretty knowledgeable FB fans and I can only speak for myself, but I think the “Pokes are a team on the rise and I don’t take them lightly. I’m looking for a Dawg win but you have the people to spring the upset if every single Dawg doesn’t play pedal to the mental. I won’t be there but welcome to Athens. I won’t be there next year but I’m sure that the Cowboys will roll out the Red Carpet for the visiting Dawgs fans. Who am I to argue with the Great Gen. Neyland? Phil may have hit the Atkins diet, but our QB play was sad that night….how many of you Vowel fans left early that night when we jumped out to an early lead (must admit, I was shocked!). But….let us allow last year to be what it is….history. We will renew our rivalry in KnoxVegas for braggin’ rights this year (oh…btw…I don’t think Richt has lost @ your stadium…yet) …by all means…may your boys in orange spank the “Bars” from Californee. More on Bobo’s play calling. The second half against VT :the #1 defense in the nation: he called as good or better a game as I’ve seen in Richt’s tenure. If coach Searles can get the line clicking we could see this offense take off big time.Let’s hope it’s sooner rather than latter.

I agree with A-ville. CMR stated that he really did not know what Bobo might or might not do. This is very telling. First, it shows he does have complete trust in Bobo, and second it speaks volumes about where he has been focusing his attention, and it isn’t the offense. Has he been in Willie’s back pocket these past few weeks? I think so, “Hey Willie, I know you enjoy the soft zone; however if you have herd of race horses I would recommend you let them run. What do you think there old college buddy?”. Yes sir.

I fully expect the Pokes to bring the house after our youngsters upfront. When the Pokes blitz, Stafford will counter it with some of his magic… like perhaps, sprint draws/quick slant etc…

Definitely we need to play discipline D against their balance O. We need to cover the flat… buffaloes burned us last season in that area. Our front four must dominate upfront.. easy win if we dominate the line.

Cowboy Magician, I respect your team more than I respect your conference. Your North division sucs eggs as we saw in Colorado not being able to put us down like a Micheal Vick pit bull in the fourth quarter last year. As you learned from your defeats, we learned from ours and our close wins. You should have played us last year if you wanted a win. We, meaning our team, are pumped and will get the job done on the field. I know you have played in hostile environments. Wait til the trumpet blows in the South endzone and Munson starts talking on the big screen. Goosebumps cannot describe it. 93,000 roaring fans and you may have 2,000. I am sure they will be vocal though. But really, we have speed you have never seen. Your win just will not happen . But if it does, I will be on this blog on Sunday eating crow. I have had it fried, sauteed, grilled, and even sushi. If we lose, highly unlikely, let me know how you want me to eat the crow, last one was feathers and all, the beak bout made me choke. That said, you lose. Dawgs 48 Pokes 24. Good luck on the rest of your season. And I mean it. I as a fan of college ball have always pulled for the pokes over the soon to be known. By the way, which school has the Ag school?

MJ, a good piece of advice on getting tickets. Wait till the game starts. Once it does the scalpers get nervous and start cutting losses. I have gotten two for one pricing on a Georgia Auburn game that before kickoff was selling at $200 per ticket. I got two tickets for $24 halfway through the first quarter. You have to have intestinal fortitude and be willing to be firm. If that does not work, I suggest the Blind Pig below the railroad tracks. Great bar, friendly servers, they make you feel at home.

General, without you and your dedication to SEC football, I would not be excited to watch you play California. How much bleach does it take to get my Orange work shirt that funky shade of gold for you and your team. I am with you brother. And any homers that want to give me the finger for pulling for Rocky Top over the Surfers, bite me.

Cowboy, I hope I was not too harsh. Have fun and I am impressed with your dedication to your team to make the trip in one of the most hostile environments in the South. Just remember. You are not playing the Tide. We know how to coach and get the best out of our players. Just watch and see.

Jacket attack, it is your turn on dungeons and dragons and the wizard has got you in his grasp. Leave football to people who know how to play it. Go back to your Star Trek convention. By the way, have you ever been laid? Go meet some girls from Agnes Scott if it is still there.

Buck you are all wrong. Only nine will play. Good guess though. Keep the faith my brother, you know what I mean.

7mm Dawg, have you ever considered joining the FOC. Your kind of post gets you immediate consideration. Most of us constant bloggers are members of the FOC.

By Lane

Miller, was dismissed from the team last year.

Offensive Line

Sturdivent(LT), starting a true freshman and Boling(true freshman) in the rotation at guard. Haverkamp(JC transfer) and Davis(REF) have never played a down. These guys have to grow up fast-big time.

If you look at nationally ranked teams the OL, was comprised of RS Jr’s. and seniors.

OL’s require at least 2/3 yrs. in the system before being ready too play.

Start of the season could be and adventure.

Kregg Lumpkin - I can’t understand the coaching staff’s decision not to start him. He has proven in all pre-season scrimmages and in 2 straight regular seasons that he is a superior running back to Thomas Brown, and the offense is much more prolific when he is in the line up. I understand that Brown is a hard worker with a great attitude, but he just doesn’t have “it.” Lumpkin worked his tail off during the off-season (I believe he won the best conditioned award) and seems to be a great kid. I thought he earned the right to the starter, and I am disappointed for him. I am also disappointed for the offense as I think having Brown in the line up instead of Lumpkin or Moreno will result in us falling behind in the OK St. game. I just hope we don’t fall too far behind before the reins are handed to Lumpkin and Moreno.

Wow, for Bruce Figgins to get the start over Naderris Ward and Coleman Watson seems pretty… interesting. He must either have quite a bit of talent or those two are underperforming significantly. I remember there being quite a bit of buzz about Naderris Ward last year, so I’m a little surprised that a true freshman is starting. Wondering if it’s the catching or blocking that Ward and Watson were having trouble with. I guess it speaks to the talent level of these freshman if they’re able to come in and start over guys that have been in the program for at least a year.

Andy.. Ward is he starter.. Re read the article..

As for the Dawgs O.. The ‘Boys D is not ‘barnburners’. I believe MS will get time needed to hit short routes early. The RB’s are playing for their blocking ability, not their running abitity & Southerland is a beast, so I believe that with that protection MS will have time to dice their D..

UGA’s D (Martinez & Co) will have to make adjustments on the fly. I want to see our D STICK the muthers this season!! FORGET holding up a runner & stripping the ball!! We will have to have good one on one open field tackling..

Will be interesting to see how the KO from the 30 work out but I believe we have athletes to cover well..
Question? Before this season, on KO coverage, keeping a team at or inside the 20 is considered very good.. THis season what will be considered ‘very good’? inside the 25 - 28? Just askin’

Go Dawgs 31 -24!! (IMHO)

What worries me the most is that we wear out our freshman o-linemen again before they are physically ready to play and the cycle of being forced to play freshmen continues. How many more talented guys are we going to lose to chronic shoulder injuries because they were forced to play before they were physically ready? The list is already long. It seems like 90% of our o-line signees either quit or are lost to shoulder injuries. I am hopeful that with Calloway gone, this trend may be stopped. However, if we continue to play them before they are ready, will it? On the other hand, at this time, what else are we going to do?

I liked an article I read yesterday where VA Tech is encouraging applause at pregame for the visitors. Seems to stem from support they received from other schools during their tragedy. Reminded me of last year’s DAWGS fans who were very vocal that the Colorado buffalo should come to Sanford Stadium. Let’s show some class this year and quit the BOOING at pregame. Applaud them for being here before and after the game, and create a lot of home noise during the game to show support for our DAWGS. Welcome to the deep south where common courtesy is a way of life and not just an option.

BullDawgRick, Chip did an update., Figgins is the starting TE….82DAWG….I’m glad Callaway is gone also but there’s a big difference now. 1. we have a better class of freshmen just because of the numbers. 2. we’ll be rotating them in and out plus in some sports we’ll be 3 deep.

Read Chip’s latest practice update. It states Figgins as the starter.

I think if Ward had come back stronger from his shoulder injury he would be the starter.

You know we have debated CMR recruiting in here tons, but I still am shocked to see on Saturday out of our front six, three will be Freshman. They better learn quick or Stafford will be running around like a chicken with his head cut off.

My Bad.. Did not read thru the entire blog.. Both will be really good.. As for the OL & shoulder injuries.. Remember Zeb McKinzie from Parkview? The AAAAA player of the year as a Jr. and benching around 500.. Never panned out.. Too much too early.. But the Stinchcomb boys played early as did Big Max.. So I am hoping it can work.. Am looking forward to seeing what Justin Anderson does, too.. I think Southerland will be key for the passing game too… Love those “chips, then fade in the flats catches”… I am excited to see what Bobo does…

On another note.. I have to say that I am proud of CMR & the UGA program & how he holds the players accountable for their actions.. Did you see in the fishwrap the OK St. starting MLB Chris Collins is accused of sexually assauting a 12 year old girl?? Do you think CMR would keep a player on the squad muchless START the guy?? The key to victory on sat. will be a controlled short passing game (5-10 yard patterns) mixed with quick hit slants in the ground game. This will force the linebackers to back off trying to blitz Stafford in obvious passing situations if he is able to execute. We should avoid trying to get it all in one play. The best way to demoralize a defense is to pick them apart little by little and score. I would love to see Mark Richt surprise the OK Corral Kids with a surgical offensive attack that will let the air out of their defense. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!

If we’re so worried about freshmen and true freshmen playing on the offensive line, why don’t we start Vince Vance at left tackle? He at least has experience on the junior college level.

General,

I have followed this blog since 2004(or back when it cost ya 30 bucks) and you have got to be the funniest enemy blogger I have ran across. Your comments are often funny and dead on the mark.

Back on topic…I must have listened to Larry for far to long. These group of young men have me nervous as you know what. I think I need a good shot of Jim already and its not even gameday!

ap,it seems that we fans are more worried about the freshmen than cmr. is he just trying to encourage the kids,or does he know something we don’t? i hope it is the latter. i gave up trying to predict ballgames after the series between the braves and the “miracle” mets back in the sixtys,i have no idea how this game will go.richt seems confident however.

shane, our “OL” being so young, it’ll take a while for them to get use to the speed of the ‘Pokes; however, our DB has some PT and should be able to provide deep ball couverage…I like climbing out on limbs so let’s do it again. The Glue, Stafford, will hold us together and we’ll score enough to win. 31-27 Dawgs.

Hello to the ‘Dawg Nation from a proud OSU grad and megafan. I’ve been on here the last few days enjoying the blogs or is it “blawgs”. Anyway, mostly harmless fun and building the anticipation for all of us. Can’t wait. I’ll be watching the game here in OKC with some good friends of mine from GEORGIA. I also want to speak for most OSU fans in saying we are really excited about opening the season against a quality team and traditional power like UGA.

There’s just a couple of items to which I would like to respond. First, to BullDawg Rick. That’s pretty low about Chris Collins. Yes, he has been ACCUSED of sexual assault on a 12-year old. But, it’s still not gone to trial after 3 years and I believe you are still innocent until proven guilty in this country. While at OSU, Collins has been a model student, athlete, and citizen. Over his 3 years as coach, Mike Gundy has dismissed probably 10-12 players for WAY lesser offenses. It just came out in the paper today that one of our backup LBs was dismissed for being underage in a bar. Sorry, but I gotta take up for my school when somebody makes it sound like we allow criminals to play for us.

Now about the game. Where does this notion come from that OSU/Big 12 isn’t used to “team speed”? Ever heard of Oklahoma and a guy named Adrian Peterson? How about Texas and Vince Young? Remember what he did to the “other” OSU (Ohio St)? How many 1st round NFL draft picks came out of Texas this year? I don’t think the NFL is in the habit of drafting slow guys. ‘Course Texas did THRASH us last year! I know most of you are sick of hearing about us beating ‘Bama in the Indep Bowl, but they had one of the top-ranked D’s in the country last year and we “rolled” ‘em for over 400 yards. Does UGA really have that much more “team speed” than ‘Bama?

Just for a little good-natured ribbing, I would like to thank the UGA coaching staff for passing on RB Dantrell Savage when he came out of HS in Columbus, GA. He went to a juco in MS and we snatched him up after that. Last year, he missed the first half of the season w/injury and still got over 800 yards and averaged 6.5 per carry. He’s also been a quality young man and we are pround to call him a Cowboy!

On the brink of a new season, I think we as Dawg fans need to consider just how great a coach we have in Mark Richt:

Remember the last days of Dooley, Goff, and Donnan? There were certain games on the schedule where you just knew in your bones, we would be lucky to hang with the opponent for 3 quarters.

Under Richt, as a fan, you have total confidence that we have a good shot in EVERY game. Look at the schedule… are there any teams you don’t think we will at least go down the very last drive of the game with?

Lets pause for a minute and appreciate what we have in Richt.

Injuries:

I am knocking on wood before I even write this:

Now that the hitting is pretty much over in practice going into the first game, I can’t recall aUGA team in recent memory that is so healthy.

We have some guys with bumps and bruises, but we haven’t lost anyone for the season.

It seems like every year, we have 2-3 guys who would already be done for the year… or missing the first 4-6 weeks.

I know that we lost Coates and I feel terrible for him. I count him a different category as he continually had major injuries to his knee over and over. It just wasn’t meant to be.

I hope this good team health will translate to a great season!

Patrick, welcome aboard. I shy away from using that “speed” term. Ever since a lot dawg fans (I might have been included, probably not though) were talking of team speed in the Sugar Bowl versus West Virginia. Slaton and White, little known to us had their pictures in the dictionary next to the word speed.

Everytime I hear that comparison of “your conference can’t handle our speed” I cringe. Team speed, position speed comparisons can set everybody up to look foolish. OSU v Florida can also be referenced. I just hope we can contain that offense of yours early and often. If we can do that we will be okay. True we could use a rusher like Savage. 6.5/carry comes in handy. Hopefully we have three in the backfield this year. The one that left for the NFL (Danny Ware a Junior) was 2 or 3rd string and looks like he will make the roster for the Jets. Our OL is young but very well coached.

I-Dog-

Get your facts straight. Chris Collins has NOT admitted to statutory rape of a 12-year old. I guarantee if he had, he would not be on the team. The incident happened 3 years ago when he was still in HS. There is DNA evidence on several other guys, NOT Collins. Don’t you think if the State of Texas had a case against Collins they would have tried him by now?

Little Research here…

Since 2005 there have been 96 players chosen in the 1st round of the draft. Of which 25 have been from the SEC. The Big 12 has had 11 picks in that same span.

Patrick,

This is why the UGA is more than prepare to handle OSU. Week in and out we have to face the nations best athletes. Yeah you have Texas and Oklahoma sure, but from top to bottom no conference can put 11 guys on the field with as much speed and athleticsm like the SEC.

UGA should not come out Saturday and be surprised by anything OSU does offensively since they have had 9 months to gameplan for it.

As fot the Collins situation OSU has a history of taking chances on bad seeds. Remember JamesOn Curry? Mr. Norht Carolina basketball who plead guilty to 6 FELONY counts of selling drugs to undercover police in ‘04. So don’t give me that line.

Enjoy the game!

Thanks gdawginkalamazoo. It will be interesting to see how the whole speed thing plays out. Safe to say, I think we are in for a track meet in both directions! My biggest fear for OSU is whether Reid has his head on straight. He sometimes freaks out on the road in big games/stadiums (see at Texas last year). Just hoping he’s matured some and has it together this year because he is quite talented.

I’m sure you guys’ OL will be fine, especially in the middle. We have almost no D-1 experience in the interior of our DL. We do have some of that good old speed on the edges. Your freshman LT, while I’ve no doubt has plenty of talent, may have some problems as we have some really fast & experienced DEs.

Hey Lowcountry. Man, you guys are ATTACK Dawgs. I never tried to say one conference was better than the other or that the SEC doesn’t have speed. Didn’t even make any predictions about the games. Just wondered why everybody seems to think the SEC is so much faster. Believe me, I’ve got nothing but respect for the SEC. Our ex-coach is doing a pretty good job at LSU.

Just for the record, I didn’t say we didn’t take chances on guys with troubled pasts. Doesn’t everybody deserve a 2nd chance? Who the heck are you to say Chris Collins, JamesOn Curry or anybody else is a “bad seed”? BTW, Curry is a perfect example and can be counted as a great success. Never was in any trouble at OSU, was an excellent student, and was drafted into the NBA. Because of the chance he was given by OSU, he’s made something of himself and will have a nice life. Good thing we didn’t give up on him like UNC. Again as with the football team, when basketball players are given a chance and blow it, they are gone. Last year, Sean Sutton cut about 4 guys pre-season and because of that we were short-handed all year and missed the NCAA. So please, don’t go off on me about OSU and any “bad seeds” until you get all the information.

Patrick,

So Gundy dismissed 10-12 guys from the football team last year? Then Sutton dismissed another 4 guys from the basketball team last year? Hmmm.. My point is it looks like from the outside looking in OSU goes out and does risky recruiting to keep up with the big boys. Sure Curry is an example, but my point was look at the risk your university took. Eventually when you keep taking these risks which your university does, it will come back to bite you in the but. Just my opinion…

Patrick, that’s a nice piece of info there regarding Reid. Hopefully we can use that. I didn’t know that was the case. If it is then I could compare you guys to one of our rivals, Georgia Tech. They had Calvin Johnson (Bowman), Tashard Choice (Savage), and Reggie Ball (Reid). Game senario would be Bowman shutdown, Savage 100+ yards and Reid…. Nah, nevermind there isn’t anybody that can compare with Reggie Ball.

I read just last night on scout.com that Ward will start at TE.Where does this talk of Figgins starting come from ? If Figgins does start, coaches must be worried about blocking.Figgins listed speed in hs was 5.09 in the forty, which is slow beyond belief for a receiver of any sort at this level.Word is he’s by far the best blocker from the group and it seems to make sense with this very young, green line to have the best protection. Again though, the only word (supposedly) from CMR is that Ward will start.

Patrick,

You guarantee that? Why did the NY times report that he did exactly that. Admit to having consensual sex with her (which in that state is statuatory rape since she was 12).

If the story in the NY times was not true… Collins would already be a very rich man. His attorney’s would have sued for libel and slander and it would be an easy case to win. Either he admitted to having sex with her or he did not.

Collins says that he did not “forceably” rape her which will be for the courts to decide.

I don’t know why the state of TX has been so slow to get him in court. Sometimes rape charges are difficult because there are usually only two people involved “the defendent and the alledged vicitim”.

I think that little girl deserves more of a 2nd chance than the people who did that to her. I’m not advocating the death penalty, but how about a 2 game suspension just to save face?

OSU faces plenty of speed in the Big 12 which is a good conference. OSU themselves will have plenty of speed and great athletes. I think UGA has more 4 and 5 star type guys AND 92,000 worth of home field advantage and that depth and home feild will be the difference (I hope)

Most Dawg fans think it will be a great game and the line at 7 indicates that nobody is predicting a cake walk.

Right Lowcountry, I’m sure UGA recruits nothing but choirboys and Richt has never had to cut anybody for “character issues”. Sure, OSU has taken risks and when it doesn’t work out they are gone. That’s all I ever meant to say. Tired of this subject. Can we all just talk about the game? MUCH more fun.

Kalamazoo, I didn’t give you anything that the UGA coaches don’t already know about. Pretty well-documented, even in the local papers here. I’m sure your stadium will be PLENTY loud for opening game anyway! I know ours will be when the ‘Dawgs return the visit in 2009.

Not a bad comparison to the Ga Tech players, on 2 out of 3. Bowman compares physically to Johnson, just not quite as fast (there’s that speed thing again) or quite as polished a receiver. BTW, Bowman is from SEC country (Chattanooga, TN). Savage/Choice are comparable. But you’re right, Reid is FAR superior to Reggie Ball. Can you imagine what Johnson would have been like if he woulda had a better QB in college?

By Patrick

August 29, 2007 3:57 PM | Link to this

Won’t argue that UGA has more highly-rated athletes and home-field advantage and again I’ve never made any predictions as to the outcome of this game. BUT, there have been more than a few, including an AJC columnist, that have predicted a cakewalk. 41-16? UGA could very well score 41, but I really don’t see them holding OSU to 16.

i hate to break my fellow dawgs bubble but okstate does have speed.i went to rivals a while back and looked them up.lots of 4.4 and 4.5 forty times.i didn’t spend any time comparing them to us because i have better things to do,but i am sure some asst coach somewhere is doing that.anyway people, they ain’t slow.i don’t know who will win,but i think it will be close.they look too much like us.

Patrick,

Sorry, just messing with ya on the score. I do not think we hold ya to 10. Honestly, the score will be high, more like 34-31, 41-38 ..something like that. Hopefully UGA comes out on the high side!
