UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Was Richt’s retraction warranted?

No sense in delaying. Might as well go ahead and dive head first into the pool of controversy that is the Indoor Practice Facility Debate.

First, let’s get you up to date. Georgia coach Mark Richt has let it be known over the last several years that he’d very much like to have an indoor facility for the Bulldogs to retreat to in the case of inclement weather. Up until this weekend, he has been fairly diplomatic and subtle about it, sort of nudging AD Damon Evans and the athletics board whenever the subject arose. But this past Friday, Richt delivered a relative sledgehammer after an afternoon thunder-boomer forced first a delay and then the cancellaton of a very important practice.

“It’s just a royal pain to have to deal with this kind of stuff,” Richt said on Friday. “It would be nice to have a little indoor facility nearby where you wouldn’t have to spend your whole life trying to figure out a new plan. It’s very frustrating, it gets very old and I’m about tired of it.

“Maybe one day we’ll get that done.”

Now I — as all the beat guys — have heard Richt’s complaints before on this subject. We’ve seen him scramble to come up with Plan Bs and bus the team over to Ramsey or, occasionally, all the way to the Falcons’ complex in Suwanee because of bad weather. But there was much more of a sharp edge to his comments this time. That’s why I chose it as the lead item in our Friday football report.

Perhaps playing devil’s advocate, I followed with the question, “Is this something you’d leave Georgia over?” Sarcastically — and jokingly — he replied, “No. They’d probably say, ‘good riddance.’”

Richt went on to answer all our questions about the depth chart and Oklahoma State and such things just like he always does and we all went about our business thinking little more of it. It wasn’t until after Saturday night’s practice, after we had completed interviews, that Richt sort of casually asked the beat regulars, “Any chance I can renege on that practice facility thing?” We just kind of laughed it off. I think I said something like, “You said what you meant and you meant what you said. You don’t need to.”

I don’t think any of us at that moment grasped how much this had really been weighing on Richt’s mind. Then he issued that retraction statement through the sports communication office Sunday night. For your edification, here is the statement in its entirety:

“I would like to make a public statement following up on my recent comments pertaining to our facilities at UGA.

“First I am very proud to be at the University of Georgia. I have poured a lot of my life and energy into this program and I’m thankful every day for where God has placed me. I’m also thankful for the leadership of our University, Athletic Association, and Athletic Board.

“Friday’s comments regarding the lack of an indoor practice facility were a knee-jerk reaction to a series of events that happened throughout the day ending with the cancellation of practice due to a storm in the area.

“When I actually read my comments late in the day on Saturday I was very disappointed in what I said and the way I said it. It appeared to be someone who was ungrateful for what he had and that is certainly not the case. For that, I want to apologize to President (Michael) Adams, (athletic director) Damon Evans, and the Bulldog Nation.

“I am very blessed at UGA and Damon and I have a great working relationship. In fact, we have been working together in planning a project that will provide a major facility improvement.

“I want to end by saying that this statement is heartfelt and I was not asked to make it by anyone other than my own conscience.”

Just to complete the background on this subject, the whole concept of an indoor practice facility was first initiated by former Georgia coach Jim Donnan. In fact, they had blueprints drawn and donor pledges ready to build one paralleling Rutherford Street across from the baseball stadium. But that fell through due to a confluence of circumstances, including Sept. 11th and the crash of the stock market in 2001.

OK, so with all that to frame your opinions on the subject, let’s discuss the situation. First, did Richt need to issue a retraction or should he have stuck by his comments? Secondly, do you believe him when he says he was not instructed by superiors to issue a retraction? And finally, do you believe Georgia clearly needs such a facility (only the Dogs and Florida in the SEC don’t have one)?

CHIP, GOING BY WHAT YOU SAID, WHEN I 1ST SAW IT I SIMPLY TOOK COACH AT HIS WORD AND DIDN’T THINK ANY MORE ABOUT IT BECAUSE THE SUBJECT HAS BEEN TALKED ABOUT BEFORE. THE RETRACTION HAS ME SCRATCHING MY HEAD AND ASKING WHY? NOW I DO WONDER.

Coach Richt’s comments were born simply out of frustration and probably out of suffering through this heat wave as well.

He has always been most gracious, complimentary and thankful toward the University and has brought great credit upon UGA. He is human and is entitled to a slip of the lip on occasion. I believe his apology was sincere and of his own accord. I would not trade Coach Richt for anyone - even if he occasionally shows his “human side.”

UGA has the second most profitable athletic department in the country - I suppose they could have most anything they want if needed.

I think Richt really wants one — but he was frustrated and did say what his heart really felt. On the other hand, he didn’t mean for it to come across as critical to those over him. I believe he would have liked to have handled his feelings better and communicated them in a more appropriate manner than he did. But I believe two things are clear: He loves UGA and he wants that practice facility. And, we ought to give him one.

Chip, Everybody says things at some point or time that don’t come off the way they planned them to. Maybe coach meant what he said just wasn’t pleased with the way he said it. I do think that he is truly grateful for his job and that he is as he stated in his apology blessed for having it. Don’t think he was pushed into apologizing either.

Why not make the indoor facility duel use? Design the facility to be more than just a bubble (which would be perfect as well as cheap, if that’s all you really need). Design the facility to be an indoor football field but have the ability to host indoor track meets. And heck, why not make it triple use and make it so it could host indoor tennis? That way, many other teams could get something out of it as well.

And Michael Adams and his puppet Damon Evans refusing to build a needed facility for the football team is a shame. The team brings in so much money to the school and the department. The FOOTBALL team built the beautiful new BASKETBALL practice facility next to the Stegasaurus. You’d think that the football team would now be able to get at least a cheap bubble to go into to practice when lightning strikes, but no. No word from Adams or his Puppet.

Born of frustration or not, Richt’s complaint is legitimate. As for his apology/retraction, big whoop. The man has class, realized he put his foot in his mouth and apologized. Of course, I’m sure there were a few behind-the-scenes calls and emails in the meantime, but let’s get serious. Nothing short of getting caught naked in a sorority house is going to get CMR in any real heat.

The Dogs COULD use an indoor facility to escape both inclement weather and brutal heat. It’s not like such a request is unheard of around the country. How ‘bout it, AD Evans?

I think he meant what he said, but later regretted the manner in which he said it. You can’t really blame the guy. He is responsible for looking out for those kids and it isn’t fair to them when they are already busting their a**es in the heat and then have to bus all over creation to practice.

Yes I think the retraction was warranted because it was the wise thing to do. With the hyper-sensitivity that fans have to perceived threats to stability and dissention a quick retraction was the best way to end any speculation that it was/is a divisive issue. Secondly, I do believe him. He’s done nothing but tell the truth since he has been there. Third, I personally don’t think an indoor practice facility is cirtical to the program’s success. But with summer heat being what it is these days an indoor facility is not only another recruiting inducement and preparation venue it is a safety feature of the overall program.

Regarding the indoor facility, the problem is we are like 90 million in the hole with debt even though we are the 2nd most profitable program. We also just finished the new BB practise facility and CMR doesn’t just want a 3 million dollar shell. The practise facility will of course be top of the line with offices and apparently CMR wants a museum in it.

Chip, correct me if I’m wrong but when CMR got here we had the money to build the indoor facility and CMR chose to upgrade the dorms and locker rooms. And the word was at the Atlanta Bulldawg Club meeting that Damon Evans said there would be an announcement coming regarding the football facilities and he looked over at CMR when he said it.

I like CMR have spoke out of frustration and though I meant it I shouldn’t have said it the way I did. I respect CMR for doing what he did.

I also say what ever CMR wants, GIVE IT TO HIM!

CMR is no simpleton, he knew exactly what he was doing. Think about it fans, if any of you in your business thought that a dime was holding up a dollar, wouldn’t you pay the dime? This issue is not dead, and I would be very surprised if that indoor facility was not in place by 08.

Putting the need for the facility aside. When I read CMR’s words friday they seemed out of character. If you’re going to be a certain type of person you don’t have the luxury of acting petulant.I think the apology was more like the person we are proud to have coaching the team and I for one think it was heart felt.

i think we should have an indoor facility,as i have stated here. i know debt has to be serviced and that the school has spent money on the bball program that was needed. i think a fund should be set up for the new VINCE DOOLEY center now. it should be multi use and contain offices and a bulldawg museum. as to richt’s retraction,i think it was heart felt, but i also think that at times he is just too darned nice. there are times that you have to step on somebody’s toes to get what you need. i think cmr needs to develope a bit of a mean streak. he is so popular with the boosters and the fans that he has much more power than he realizes. he has a lot of weight now,but it’s no good if he doesn’t throw it around some.

By A-ville Ranger

August 27, 2007 2:02 AM | Link to this

shane—— CMR has the kind of power that would be diminished by stepping on toes.Good will and trust can be currency and that goes double for a man like Richt. It’s kind of a paradox I suppose but think about how it would seem if all of a sudden he changed,it’d make his whole persona suspect.I believe he’s a wiser and better man than to start ‘throwing his weight around’.

By shane

August 27, 2007 2:37 AM | Link to this

ranger, good will and trust go a long way that’s true, but major college football is a cutthroat business because of the amount of money involved. to use the knife metaphor again,if you don’t develope a mean streak you can be stabbed in the back. i am not saying he has to be dr jeckle and mister hyde,he doesn’t have to turn into bear bryant. he does have to protect his turf. dooley knew this,he always seemed calm and laid back in public, but from what i have heard, dooley could be a real sob if necessary. richt is a good, honest man,but if he thought we needed an indoor practice site he should have never issued a retraction

By A-ville Ranger

August 27, 2007 3:06 AM | Link to this

shane you kind of made my point. If CMR has something to say he should say it in a constructive manner and if possible in private.I earlier used the word ‘petulant’ my pocket dictionary defines the word as meaning ‘quick to ineffectual irritation’.Point is, the way he spoke friday would, I think, weaken his position in the long run.

ranger,i would think that cmr has made his views known in private by now. you are probably right that he would have looked better had he handled the situation more tactfully. showing one’s temper is not always a bad thing however, when you need to get things done. i am sure richt is a better politician than i,at least i hope he is,i could not deal with adams.

Everywhere they looked this summer, there was another clue of what was awaiting Oklahoma State’s football players.

Bobby Reid saw it the minute he walked into the weight room for those 6:30 a.m. strength and conditioning sessions. David Koenig heard it constantly while lifting weights each afternoon. After practice each evening, Nathan Peterson caught a glimpse of the raucous venue he and his teammates will enter Saturday night.

The clock in the weight room counted down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until the season opener. Strength and conditioning coach Rob Glass blasted a song repeatedly in the weight room — the Georgia fight song.

And there was the attention-grabber tacked on a bulletin board leading to OSU’s locker room. On the board is a color picture of Georgia’s Sanford Stadium with a message — “Are you ready?” — written next to it.

Everywhere they looked, the Cowboys were smacked with some reminder of how this year is different.

Nothing against Montana State or Missouri State, a pair of NCAA Division I-AA schools, but neither one is No. 13 Georgia.

“Hey, we don’t have a warm-up game to start off,” head coach Mike Gundy said many times throughout preseason practice.

“But it’s helped our staff from April on. Once we got out of spring ball, our players have stayed focused. I don’t think there’s any question about that. They are aware of how good Georgia is.”

Since their Independence Bowl win over Alabama, Reid and his teammates constantly had Georgia getting engrained into their minds.

“We’ve been watching Georgia since the first day of camp,” the junior quarterback said. “We’ve watched them forwards, backwards, inside and out”

I’m kind of fed up with Georgia about now. To tell you the truth I am.

Koenig was fed up with the weight room music after a few days. Even though he never learned all the words to Georgia’s fight song, just hearing it daily increased the lineman’s intensity in the offseason workouts.

Koenig admitted playing a name opponent like Georgia is a big motivator.

“There were days when I looked up at that clock and saw it was under 60 days to kickoff. Then before you knew it, there were less than 30 days,” Koenig said. “I was getting a little nervous because time was winding down and the game was getting closer. Each time I looked up, I told myself I had to … work harder and harder.”

Peterson knows beating Georgia would help serve notice that the Cowboys can live up to high expectations.

“Starting out at Georgia is going to set the tone for the rest of the season,” he said. “When play someone like Georgia, you know the competition is going to be very high. This is something this team needs.”

We’ve been counting down the days, as well, for our Opening Game against Oklahoma State Cowboys : 5. And, 932 miles doesn’t exactly explain why Our Bulldogs are buying tickets to the Number 5 Stadium in America in Attendance, ‘Tween The Hedges, from your WebPages because you have not sold them out.

Yes, UGA is a ranked team : In fact, UGA is the only team in the country who has been a ranked team every one of the previous Decade’s Worth of 10 Consecutive Ranked UGA teams in the Final AP Polls.

Since UGA has played Clemson twice (home and away) and Boise State once in the last 4 years as Opening Games for us, this is little different for us. And, with your 1st six games last year being not only Missouri State, but also then Arkansas State, Florida Atlantic, Houston, hapless Kansas State and then pitiful Kansas, there is a quite a bit of difference from that and what UGA plays every year in football.

In the Final AP Poll which just ended, Florida, LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, Georgia and Tennessee were all ranked teams in This Number 1 Conference in College Football and always has been. Georgia also had games against Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Colorado, Kentucky, and South Carolina to name but a few more. This, while Oklahoma State had exactly two (2) games against a ranked team last season Number 11 Oklahoma and Number 13 Texas. That is it for ranked teams Oklahoma State played last season.

Put you on the map ? Playing 1 game against a team who plays 10, while you play 3 for a change ? I seriously doubt that. Why don’t you go to the game ? You know we will be there on the re-match, don’t you ?

I love this stuff that the Big XII is such a tough conference, with no ranked team in the Top 10 and only Number 11 and Number 13 from 12 teams.

http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/pastAPPolls.htm

So, you get a game out-of-conference and your QB whines that he is tired of hearing about The Game ?

In this last Decade of UGA Football, we have Wins over Virginia Tech, Florida State, Boise State, Colorado, Wisconsin Twice, Purdue Twice, Clemson Twice, New Mexico State Twice, Virginia Twice, Mississippi State 3 times, Ole Miss 7 times, Arkansas 5 times, and Alabama Twice (both times we played them.) In fact, UGA has not lost to 1 of all these teams in The Last Entire Decade. Not 1 Loss to any of them.

We are 8-2 vs. South Carolina, 7-3 vs. Georgia Tech, 5-5 vs. Tennessee, 4-2 vs. LSU, and we have beaten Auburn 4 times and Florida twice.

What has Oklahoma State done over this same Last Decade ?

4-6 vs. Oklahoma, 3-7 vs. Texas Tech, 2-8 vs. Texas A&M, 2-3 vs. Nebraska, 2-3 vs. Colorado, 2-3 vs. Iowa State, 0-1 vs. Fresno State, 1-0 vs. Alabama who fired their coach, 1-9 vs. Texas, 1-4 vs. Kansas State, 1-4 vs. Missouri, 1-1 vs. UCLA who hasn’t had a team in years, 1-1 vs. Mississippi State - doormat of the SEC West, 0-1 vs. Ohio State, 0-1 vs. Purdue, 0-1 vs. Houston and 0-1 vs. Ole Miss.

See any difference there ?

http://football.stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/all-opp.pl?start=1997&end=2006&team=Oklahoma+State&sort=w

Huh ?

When was Oklahoma State ranked in the Final AP Poll - let alone played someone who was - any of the Last Entire Decade of Cowboy’s Football ?

1997, ten years ago now : That is the ONLY year Oklahoma State was a Ranked (Named) Team in the Final AP Poll. And, you were ranked Number 24 in 1997 and UGA in the Top 10.

http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/pastAPPolls.htm

This while UGA has been ranked Five (5) Times in the Last 10 Years in the Top 10 of the Final AP Poll, and Oklahoma State has 1 ranking at all to our all 10 and that 1 year for Oklahoma State of being ranked at all in the Final AP Poll 10 years ago and that one year only at Number 24.

Know why ?

Because of your schedules as detailed in this article.

And, your QB was sick of hearing about us yesterday ?

And, as for this junk about the recruiting of the Big XII and Oklahoma State especially being on par with The SEC and UGA, you are incorrect too.

That is what needs to be retracted, and that alone.

I’m kind of fed up with Georgia about now. To tell you the truth I am. ” Bobby Reid, QB of the Oklahoma State Cowboys who think by beating us that they will be on the map.

I did think that Richts comments were out of character for him, but with his track record of great personal skills and refined leadership he had no need to apologize. But his apology is just another example of why he is such a class act and why I am so proud that he is our coach.

On that note there was an article in the Athens Banner last year that stated that Evans and Adams gave Richt the choice of either expanding Butts-Mehre or building an indoor practice facility and Richt chose expanding BM. This was all after touring other indoor facilities around the southeast. They found that they were rarely used and were expensive ($8-$30 million). In fact they said the track teams used them for practice more than the football teams. The BM expansion included expanding the weight room, expanding video rooms, expanding the training rooms, expanding the meeting rooms, and creating a large meeting room that previously was not available.

I just want to make it known that Evans is not steadfastly against the indoor facility, he did give Richt the option. IMO I think that we will eventually get a new indoor facility in the next few years because 1) we are profiable enough to afford it 2) we want to keep Richt happy 3) its good for recruiting 4) and least important to “keep up with the Jones’s”.

The Georgia program is the most profitable in the nation. We can afford it and should have it.

Somebody mentioned debt. That is a normal part of capital formation and our cash flow to current maturities of long term debt would comfortably amortize the deal, and we could count on donations as well.

I don’t slam Adams as much as most fans do. I don’t like how he treated Dooley, but he did insist on a change that got us Richt. But this facility is something that needs to happen and he needs to get on board. Evans will follow Adams lead.

Anybody who thinks Richt would never leave is deluding themselves. Frustrations like this are something he shouldn’t have to put up with. He is very gracious and there is no harm in his retraction. I do believe him when he said nobody told him to do it.

dino, interesting opinion, but how does that relate at all to this situation?

Dave, good comments. I thought I remembered that as well. I think Coach knows exaclty when and under what terms that indoor facilities is going to happen. I can’t beleive he and the Ath Dept heads dont talk about it all the time, and I wouldn’t think he would really “ponder” out loud as to something he already knows. I originally took those comments as simply greasing the wheels a bit and preparing the booster that this is something to be looking (paying) for in the near future. The heat and storm cancelled practices where pretty good timing. Then what I took from the retraction is exactly what he said, didn’t mean for the wording to come out quite so harsh. Although I dont think Evans put him up to anything, You know darn well his phone was ringing just to make sure they were on the same page, and Richt decided that, as with a lot of comments that get printed selectively, he might want to calm the hysterical masses, who hang on his every word.

I am pleased to see that the overwhelming majority of fans see Coach Richt’s remarks for what they are. He did not retract anything, he just clarified his intentions. CMR knows full well that he is loved by the Bulldog Nation because of his loyalty to us and his devotion to that which is “right”.

I personally appreciate his clarification even though I was not disturbed by his remarks at all. I knew that the media would be all over it if they could spin some drama into it by implying that he might leave. Coach Richt is happy at Georgia and the feeling is mutual.

As stated many times, if CMR wants the facility, give it to him. Football is the business that drives UGA’s athletic economy. Our team and our coach deserve it.

reality check,i agree it may be possible to build as it is now. i don’t know how uga’s loans are structured. i would like to see something named for coach dooley,he made uga football relevant again after wally butts departed. we had several bad years before dooley took over. the young coach turned a losing team around and took them to the cotton bowl and WON. i was a kid,but i remember how excited everyone was. he later took the team to ann arbor and beat michigan. thousand of fans greeted the plane at the airport after that. the man brought uga back into the national picture with those two wins, much as richt has brought us back today. their are enough of us dooley fans out there that i believe donations would pour in to build a state of the art indoor facility if it were known that it would honor coach dooley. i think it would also help heal the rift formed amoung the boosters when dooley was let go. we could get back some big supporters that we lost when they were snubbed by adams.

1) Richt intentional or not will get that indoor facility noe that he has made such a strong stand public. So whether he stood by them or issued the retraction at this point is irrelevant. He got what he wanted accomplished.

2)CMR in no way, shape or form was coached into doin that. CMR has to much character to let UGA Administration bully him into writing a retraction.

3)Sign ,sealed and delivered.

First, the retraction was for the ‘tone’. He said it sounded like someone ungrateful and he didn’t want to give anyone that impression. The fact that an indoor facility is needed for convenience is obvious…no retraction needed for the facts, just the supposed tone.

Secondly, if Richt said he made the retraction of his own accord then I believe him. Its nice having a coach of such character that we have to find these little minute comments to fret over…basically gnats to gage on.

UGA will beat Ok State like a drum. This game will not be close, and could get ugly early. Ok State == go ask Boone Pickens to buy you a good team. You will beat some patsies in the overrated Big 12 this year, but can’t match up with probably the best team in the SEC this year.

If UGA wants to be a big-time football organization, then don’t be a bunch of cheapskates. Pay the paper! Coach Richt and his team deserve an indoor practice facility, and I’m sure there’s enough money lying around to pay for one. Don’t be ashamed for what you said, coach Richt! You’re just sticking up for your players.

But, uh yeah, So how do you like my UGA shirt? I bought it at Wal-Mart… Wasn’t even on sale. Did I tell you all that I bought some UGA CROCS too? Man, I can’t wait to sport those badboys. I wear jean shorts to the football games. I look like the penultimate UGA fan. Nothing says “Go Dawgs” and “I have a broken down Trans-Am in my front yard” like this discount store UGA look I pull off.

Let the comment go. ALL of us who engage in sporting activities have often been frustrated by late day thunderstorms that crop up in this part of the country. I have often said that if you want to get an activity in during typical summer months, do it before noon, if possible. After noon, all weather bets are off. CMR’s comments are more than anything the product of the heat wave, and having an important practice interrupted.

Let it go, and focus upon winning these first two games. Now, there’s something to be concerned about.

Give CMR a break. A month spent preparing for a tougher-than-normal non-conference opener, and he gets frustrated when a very important practice gets scrubbed? He’s entitled to pop off.

Let’s face it, an indoor practice facility is as much about recruiting and keeping up with the Tennessee’s and the Auburn’s and the ….. as anything. Would it help in recruiting? Slightly — in that kids could no longer question why we don’t have one and most of our opponents do.

And it would relieve the pressure on the coaching staff that situations like the one Friday present. Would I rather have them worried about personnel and game plans than where or whether they are going to get a practice in? Absolutely.

C’mon Damon. Time to step to the plate. The addition to the Coliseum is done. Let’s hear some discussion about where this one falls on the list of priorities. With the Butts-Mehre building now 20 years old, isn’t it about time for a facelift that includes an indoor field?

OF COURSE we need an indoor practice facility. For God’s sake there are HIGH SCHOOLS out here in Arkansas with them! Springdale High School - the one QB Mitch Mustain is from has an indoor practice facility and UGA can’t get one? Rediculous. CMR should feel the way he does about it!

I’m sure there are several academic buildings that can be torn down to accomodate an indoor practice facility. It’s not like they’re important or anything. This is football we’re talking about, so do whatever it takes, now. If our kids want to go to college to get an education, then they can just head to the Flats on North Ave.

Perhaps some of the money that is put aside to bond-out UGA football players could be used for the facility. However, that would have a major impact on the number of players available each week. It’s not often that Richt gets emotional and makes statements, so when he does it carries some weight. I say, start the fundraising now and get this facility built. Georgia is too good of a program to not have this facility, and showing that kind of commitment to recruits would only help. If we’re going to be a premier program, like I think we are, we should have premier facilities for these guys.

Sign that your football coach might be the most upstanding coach in the league: In the days of coaches being on the hot seat for losing games, NCAA violations and having alleged affairs with other women, our coach’s “controversy” revolves around him sternly suggesting he’s tired of having to cancel practice because we don’t have an indoor practice facility and he feels morally compelled to issue an apology for it. I wish all our controversies were this way. One could only dream!! What a blessing CMR is to the Dawg Nation. I only hope the administration follows through on his wishes.

I absolutely think he should be granted his wish. Besides, the football program has been one of the most consistent programs for the past 7 years, rivaled by only tennis, gymnastics and swimming/diving. Tennis already has a state-of-the-art facility and swimming/diving has Gabrielsen Natatorium. Why SHOULDN’T the football program get an indoor practice facility? Especially when there were already plans drawn up and money designated for it!!!

Hey. Now here’s guy that is busting it trying to get things ready for the home opener against a strong opponent. Practices are limited in the number that you can have and the length of them. Time is of essence. So he was frustrated and said something that he might not should have said at the moment. He knows the political fallout and controversy that this might cause. He thought twice about what was said and made amends for it. Glad he is our coach.

mcdawg, congrats to Danny Ware. Got to see him play the other night and he looked very good running the ball. I think he will make the team and go from there. No Brainer, build it. Dawgs football brings more money to the school for everything including education. CMR is working for a mere 2 mill a year when other coaches are make 4 and they have an indoor facility. Take what we are saving in salary over the next 2 or 3 years and build it.

CMR is a class act he usually doesn’t say what he feels so directly he got frustrated & let it out then felt bad about it. However he’s right we need an IPF NOW! I don’t care what choice he was given Evans needs to get the some sort IPF ASAP, let’s go with a bubble for now then plan something grander. ADAMS NEEDS TO GO! I can’t believe he’s still there, the longer he’s there the more I think that CMR might fell lead to leave at some point. All signs point to the contrary but if he keeps having to deal with Adams he just might leave. I agree with some of the other name the facility after Dooley & make it multi purpose.

It’s game Week!

I took a peek at the OSU depth chart and was surprised at how small their Offensive line is (particularly some of the backups).

That doesn’t mean that they aren’t a good o-line and size is only one factor in the OL, but UGA hasn’t had a two deep that small in 15 years.

At one Tackle, they list Bond at 260, RF and his backup is only 275. Can you imagine the talk at UGA if our top 2 at one tackle were that size?

Hilliard is big at the other tackle at 310, but not massive. At Guard, Keonig and Siefried are 290 and 300 and at center the starter is 295 but the backup is only 265

If one or two starters go down from heat injury etc…, it seems like they will be a pretty small much relatively speaking

Compare Adams and Anderson at 320 and 335, Valasco at 315, Sturdivant at 286, Haverkamp at 310 and the little guy is Boling who is fighting for a starting spot at 270

Can we wear down OSU in the fourth quarter? How is their depth at D-line?

What is CMR complaining about? He is at the best university in the world. If its not good enough for him, he can follow his buddy Chuck Amato back to Tallahassee!!! Vince Dooley never needed an indoor practice facility, and he still won a national championship and had a Heisman Trophy winner. Get over it! Being outside makes them boys tougher, instead of being inside in the air conditioning. Richt needs to start worrying about Oklahoma State instead of getting an indoor practice facility. Maybe if he would quit worrying about that he would wake up and realize that Knowshawn Moreno and Caleb King should be in the backfield instead of Thomas Brown and Kregg Lumpkin.

LowcountryBulldawgs, I live in the middle of PAC-10 country. They can’t stand anything that has S.E.C. connected to it. When I wear my red Ga. cap that has SEC on the side, I’m always stopped or spoken to with some type of put down. It’s not easy to pull for the Vols but I’m always pulling for the SEC when we play any outside conference school. Every time USC goes over and steamrolls another SEC team I just say “thank you” because I live in Seattle and people around here can’t stand USC. PRACTICE UPDATE

The Bulldogs started 45 minutes early because of the threat of bad weather. Coach Mark Richt said they have a Plan B but didn’t divulge… . Team in full pads. This will be the last day they hit each other with any authority… .

Speaking of hitting hard, both WR Sean Bailey and LB Akeem Dent were in green and working on the side because of concussion suffered this past Saturday. Both are expected to make it back in plenty of time to play Saturday… . Also, Charles White remains in a walking boot and would appear to be scratched for the first game, if not for the season. He was already a bubble guy as far as redshirting… .

Haverkamp is out of his green jersey and set to start at right tackle… . Looking like NaDerris Ward will proabably start at tight end with freshman Bruce Figgins as second team and senior Coleman Watson at third.

It was nice to hear them talk about something other than Tennessee football, Phil Fulmer, David Cutcliffe, Trooper Taylor, Tennessee men’s basketball, Bruce Pearl, Tennessee women’s basketball, Pat Summit…well…you get the idea.

You did a good job balancing the poor mouthing while dispelling some of the myths, i.e. that the UGA program is on the ropes and in a downward spiral and will be no better than Missisippi State this and in years to come. There are a lot of TN fans that truly beleive that Georgia is out of the picture.(It’s hell sometimes, living in Big Orange Country.)

Personally, I like flying under the radar so I can really enjoy the stunned look they get on their face they get beat. (You know the look. We had it on our faces in the fourth quarter last year.) Looking forward to a little sweet revenge in Sanford North this year.

So, If I understand the OL situation going into game 1 it is:

Valsco at Center, Big Cheese at Right Tackle, Sturdivant at Left Tackle, Chris Davis at one guard, and Haverkamp at the other?

The primary backups would be, Josh Davis (assuming he can get some good work in this week) and true freshman Boling and Anderson (both of whom the coaches feel pretty good about).

Those are the likely 8 to see time in this game.

Vince Vance is someone who may contribute as time goes on and could play in a pinch…

Strickland and Perez are still developing and the coaches feel good about their future potential, but not really ready yet…

and Chris Little is an unknown because of the injury early in camp.

Is that about right?

Anyone know what is going on with Ben Hardin?

Buck, the last I heard Moreno had one of those KO return jobs. So we will see him have an impact early with that.

If he felt there was a need to come back and make a statement, good for him. He’s a truly classy man and we’re darn lucky to have him. His frustration was understandable. We need the facility, so let’s go Dawg donors and get it done.

I applaud Mark Richt, after all he is human! We should have had an indoor practice facility years ago. AD Damon needs to get off his rear end and make it happen but I’m not so sure if he can make it happen with our Snobbish President Michael Adams at the helm. Give’em Hell Coach because you are allowed to do that every once in a while. CMR is a Class Act and UGA needs to keep him. Now coach you can give those Refs Hell too every once in a while as well. Go Dawgs!!!!!

ConyersDawg, thanks for the info. Did you get the cut and paste listing the top 7 receivers according to Eason? BTW, it seems as if in the last few scrimmages that I’ve pick up on a Moreno fumble here and there. Have you or has anyone picked up on that? Could just be my vivid imagination.

Change of subject,I watched AJ Green’s game on ESPN saturday.Don’t be surprised if he doesn’t come in ready to put up star numbers. He is very thin and he has a habit coaches hate,he stands around when the ball’s not thrown to him.I don’t think he’s the top recruit coming in next year either to me Deangelo Tyson has the most potential. If you could design a DT in a lab he would probably be built alot like Tyson. The guy has a huge athletic lower body and wide thick shoulders built for tackling. He’s about 280,light on his feet and he’s only 16 years old.Look out for Richard Samuel as well the RB from Cassville,he’s built right for the position and he has extremely quick smooth cuts and comes out of them at full speed.

Buck, Asher Allen and Th. Brown are also in it for KO returner. Asher dances around to much for me. If Th. Brown looks like he did last year he would be great.

But Moreno is the man IMO. T. Brown and Lump will be looked to a lot and early for running the ball. Moreno got 1 carry last scrimmage and that was a fumble. I say let Moreno return to get his appetite wet for college football. He has great vision and speed and would be very exciting.

For any Falcons fans on here (the birds sites are always shut down)Don’t be too surprised if Harrington turns out to be a better fit in Petrino’s offense than the dog killer would have been. He’s picked up the blitz twice tonight which may be more than D.K. did all last season…..I won’t make a habit of posting bird talk on this site….GO DAWGS !!! ranger,i agree with you about aj. i posted on another blog yeaterday that i didn’t think he was ready for sec defenses yet. he is so thin that i cringe when i think of a big safety smacking him after a catch. i do think he has great hands,i like the way he catches the ball. he runs really well and has good speed too. i don’t think he will red-shirt,i think he will be used on certain plays, coming off the bench. hopefully he will gain some weight and get stronger in the off season, i think it would be too easy to jam him at the line if he doesn’t.

Just for fun, how bad are the Callefornians suppose to beat us weak, untested, full of freshmen, undersized and inexperienced Volunteers..? Haven’t seen a line yet but I’m guessing we’ll be at least a 4 point road dog…Thanks for your support in our opening day battle. Should I feel any different with UGA squaring off against OSU ? Nope, and I don’t…

HAH! the national press gets me sometimes. the better espn sportscasters do admit the sec is the toughest conference in the land. we in the east all have tough schedules, then you have ‘bama every year and we have auburn. then every few years we have the home and home with lsu. so far notre dame is unranked, but if they go 9 & 3 they will be top five. polls are a joke. good luck with the bears!

ranger, with that frame 275 would be a good weight for an end. sounds like johnson doesn’t it. it should be a real battle for spots on the d line next year. we have some all star freshmen coming in,a young line this year, and then the red-shirts that will play next year. i believe tyson could wiin a start as a true freshman. it will be intresting thats for sure. the stats that longo kid from fla put up as a pass rusher are something too. i hope we pick up a couple more star o linemen this year.

Fulmer would have been fired for making a comment like Richt. Of course Fulmer suspended LaMarcus Coker indefinately for a medical violation. Once he fulfilled his committment to the training regimen he was allowed back on the team (though he does not get to make the trip to Cal)and will miss at least a portion of the second game. Of course if you get in Fulmer’s doghouse it usually ends with either the player quitting or getting kicked off the team because FUlmer makes them pay the price to show they really want it.

CMR made the comments out of frustration. I don’t think he meant anything by them and being the conciensous (sp)and honest man that he is, quickly tried to make amends to make sure his remarks weren’t taken the wrong way. He did the right thing. In truth, if UGA is the sports program they say they are, an indoor facility should have been built years ago.

This game should be a real measuring stick for OSU to see how we’re progressing in our goal to become a player on the national level every year — this is the real story. One Cowboy booster donated $165 million (!) to the athletic department … which, through investments, has grown to $300 million. As strange as it sounds — even more to so OSU fans — in a few years Stillwater might just be home to the best facilities in the nation.

The results are already coming in — just look at the upswing in the recruiting classes at OSU. The talent level is improving every year … and this game should give an indication as to where that growth is right now. Of course UGA is going to be expected to win … and why not? The Dawgs contend every year for their conference title while the Pokes struggle to break into the upper-echelons of the Big 12. The results won’t really be in until at least six or seven games into the season when everyone has a better idea of how good this Georgia team is (or isn’t).

While I agree the SEC is the best conference in the country, the Big 12 is pretty solid — especially the South division where Baylor is really the only weak link. Don’t forget, recent national champs OU and Texas are annual foes. Speaking of the Longhorns, the Pokes have given them some pretty serious scares the past few years … including streaking out to a 35-7 lead in Austin … before a monumental collapse at the hands of Vince Young and the rest of the Longhorns.

Obviously, OSU’s strong point is offense — as demonstrated against quality opponents last season. The key for the Pokes is going to be trying to keep the Cowboy defense off the field long enough to stay rested. Three-and-outs, turnovers or even quick scores can contribute to wearing the D down. The defense seems to be improved but, as with any early-season game, no one will know until it plays out on the field. The Pokes do have some pretty explosive special teams so that could be a factor as well.

Can OSU’s offense put points on the board? Seems like most people on here think they can. So let’s say the Cowboys score 20 points … how confident are Dawg fans in their offense to answer that? Even if the OSU defense is suspect — and I will consider it such until I see otherwise — will UGA’s inexperience on the offensive line keep the Dawgs from outscoring OSU?

Tough call. I think OSU makes it interesting … as much as I’d like to see a Cowboy win, I still think we’re still just a bit away from challenging an SEC contender on their turf. UGA 27, OSU 23.

gtdc has been running gassers prepping for the season…To ease the pain associated with my bout of Munsonitis, I watch reruns of the Cal opener last year from which I refer to the severe pounding administered…I try to run out the woe and alas that accompanies a bad case of Munsonitis by doing speedwork at the track…My biggest fear is that my Munsonitis will move beyond the acute stages into long lasting bouts of depression and alcohol abuse…well, Munsonitis does appear to have ONE up side…

A-Ville:

AJ does look very thin, but I think he will be in the mix early in his first season at UGA.

He does remind me of Randy Moss in a lot of ways (except character) in that he is thin but strong, deceptively fast and can catch in traffic.

As the game wore on he did stand around a lot (like Moss) when the play wasn’t going to him, earyl on he was a lot more active blocking and running his routes.

Keep in mind… he played a lot of downs on defense in the first half and it was August in SC.

I think he was frustrated by his performance and that can be a good thing for a future superstar. He has much to work on.

I am as excited as you are about Tyson at DT. That position just doesn’t have the oohh ahhh highlight footage that a WR can produce.

i dawg,i agree with you on aj,the kid’s movements are very fluid and i like the way he catches the ball with his hands. he is the best high school reciever i have seen as far sa concentrating on the ball and looking it into his hands. from what i have read,aj’s forte is the long ball. i see him in the mix next year, but not as an every down wr. i don’t think he could take the pounding, too thin. you are right that tckles are not flashy, but i look at building a football team like building a house, and the linemen are the foundation. the skill position players are the trim. you can buy a beautiful home, very flashy, but if the foundation is no good you are royally screwed. remember that cmr was an oc and we have recruited a lot of high-profile offensive players, but he didn’t put the thought into the foundation that he should have. now he has learned, just look at our recruits last year.

By Buck in the NW

August 28, 2007 3:56 PM | Link to this

shane, I wonder how much of what you’re saying was because of the recruiting judgement calls made by our former Head Offensive line coach and CMR put to much value in his judgement.

By gdawginkalamazoo

August 28, 2007 4:02 PM | Link to this

MJ, Thanks for the excellent post. Good analysis. Everybody seems to be suspect of our O-line due to the youth and inexperience. Sure if you look at that part of it we look suspect. The other part is the O-line coach and we have one of the best in the country. I think he will be the difference in how well they will perform. As far as our offense, hopefully they will be matching you guys and wearing your defense down. Last year our RB’s were hyped like crazy and under performed. Not so much hype this year so maybe the reverse will be true.

I think the key will be to stop or at least contain your offense as much as possible to start the game. The stats of 200+pass/200+rush average have me very nervous because we have had problems stuffing the run lately. Can’t wait till kickoff it might be a dandy.

buck,i can’t say, because i don’t know. how many times have you read that on THIS site? it could be bad input from his assts, more likely just a lack of experence. i read a story a while back about ut and their struggles a couple of years ago. i don’t remember many details, maybe the general can help me out. do you remember when they were picked to win the sec and had such a lousy year? they had mucho star talent and went nowhere. this ut asst,i don’t remember his name, anyway,he said they had a team meeting after the season and fulmer told them to go out and find him some football players and not to spend so much time going after stars. asst coaches love to recruit stars, after all recruiting stars gets them noticed and could lead to a head coaching job someday. but it’s the football players that make winning programs. the guys that don’t get their names in the paper but are busting it in practice every day, providing leadership, and performing whatever duty the coach gives them gladly and to the best of their ability. you get a dedicated core of football players and you will win games.
