UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Intense heat, hitting for 1st full-contact practice
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hazy skies and temperatures in the mid-80s greeted the Bulldogs early this morning and the heat was on a rapid rise. It was not just because afternoon highs were expected to reach 102 degrees either. Thursday morning represented the first of two-a-day practices and the first full-pads, full-contact workout of the preseason.
“The first day of pads, always an exciting day,” said Georgia coach Mark Richt. “It was a very physical day.”
Leather could be heard popping early on and, like the heat, it increased exponentially as the practice wore on. The highlight came midway through with a three-on-three, offense-versus-defense drill on the lower-most field turf field. The entire team, offensive players in red jerseys and defensive in white, encircled the action and cheered on their respective sides. The coaches kept score and the defense won 7-6 (one point awarded for each play won), according to Richt.
That was followed by inside drill, which is essentially seven-on-seven, handing off the ball up the middle to one side or another. That was the No. 1 respective units against the No. 2s, and Richt called it a “dead heat,” no pun intended.
“There was some stickin’ goin’ on, but not enough for me,” senior safety Kelin Johnson said. “Speaking on behalf of the defense, I didn’t think we were physical enough. We’re not tough enough, not yet. But we’re working on it.”
Georgia will go at it again — sans pads — at 4:20 this afternoon. Temperatures should have peaked out about 102 or 103 around then. I’ll update the blog with practice notes this morning and again late this afternoon. Be sure to tune in for that latest.

Blog slow to get up today. Sorry.
Some notable happenings from practice:
Mikey Henderson hurt a hip and Quintin Banks “got hit in the head,” according to Richt. Both will likely sit out this afternoon and Henderson maybe longer if his injury is deemed a hip-pointer. I saw freshman Justin Houston leaving the field late with trainer Ron Courson (under his own power) but don’t know details. We’ll see this afternoon.
CB Bryan Evans (hamstring) was dressed out in full pads but wore a green, non-contact jersey. He said it’d still likely be “the week after next” before he returns.
John Knox did not practice this morning but will this afternoon. He’ll be in shorts and helmet for five days before he’ll be able to join the team in full-contact.
Willie Martinez was working with the gunners in kick coverage on pursuit angles. They were using a big plastic ring, running around it then sprinting down the field and hitting moving dummies carried by the managers.
Mikey Henderson, Thomas Flowers and Knowshon Moreno were all back catching punts.
More later.

Thanks for the update Chip. Living here in Tampa I get no news except from you about what is going on. How well do you think Knowshon Moreno will do in his first year playing? And, do you think the O-Line will be able to protect Stafford this year?
Thanks

I thought our kickoff coverage was weak last year. I remember one game where we kicked to the sideline and the return repeatedly took it back right along the sideline. That was frustrating. I’m glad to hear that Martinez is working on this himself.

Good stuff Chip. So the defense won 7-6? How did the DEs look? How did Brandon Miller look? And in your opinion, with Henderson out, how will that impact how effective he can be on opening day?
Can’t wait to read the rest this afternoon!!! I really think our defense might surprise some this season!!!

Ahhh….Chip, your updates are awesome!! Thanks, man! This is always the worst time of the year for me, cause I get antsy. I can’t wait to see the dawgs start the beat-down!! I would have to predict that Figgins, Troupe, and Moreno, will be the stars of the newbies.
Also, I love the way our entire defense is under the radar! It’s okay though, we should be used to it.
Anyway, it’s nice to hear from you guys again(Fans of Chan)! BTW- I will be tailgating at the Ramsey Center again, but with a bigger party! BE THERE,BE THERE,BE THERE!!!!

Also, I am excited about the Team Coaching I am seeing written about. There was a great article about Coach Searels and Bobo working together.
Don’t we all know, that those behind the scenes leadership dynamics really shape outcomes. If you have any doubt, read this book or get it on tape:
Leading from the Heart by Coach K (Duke hoops). Its an amazing read even if you really don’t care for Duke per se.

Henderson is so small that he may get nicked a lot. Putting him “in space”(wr) is a good move. Is Caleb King doing anything or just standing around? How is Haverkamp doing? He could be a real key to the “OL”.

I think the defense is going to surprise people for 5 reasons:
Georgia has a history of great defense. That is a function of coaching. To me the criticism of Martiez is off base. We were top 10 in defense stats last year.
The young talent on the defesive line is superb and the depth is the best it has been in a while. That will be a huge advantage in early game heat.
Georgia’s linebackers are more talented than they have been recently. The guys last year played really well, but none of them were drafted. Our experience level is down, but some of our young linebackers are going to be playing on Sunday one day.
Our secondary is probably the strongest unit on the team, even with the loss of Oliver. It is one of the best in the country.
I anticipate our offensive turnaround will help our defense. Georgia had far more offensive turnovers last year than any other team in the SEC. I believe that was due to the quarterback situation that is now fixed, based on the results of the last 3 games and the spring game.

Franklin,…son?..This is a blog about college football, unless you didn’t notice(or couldn’t read). After glancing through your “input”, I noticed that your intent had nothing to do with football.Yes, we all know that Florida won the championship, and it was alll because of you! Get a grip. You know, there is a place that you can trade insults with others,..it’s called a playground. Take it there, not here!!
Reality,..I completely agree with you on all counts, but especially #3! I think alot of people forgot about Allen and Bryan.Add a healthy Coates back in the mix, with Byrd and Jones, and you have some serious talent!

Hey Chip, how’s Trinton looking? Is he a man amongst boys? Is he picking up quickly the nuances that Coach Searls is trying to teach him, or is he one of the guys that is a frequent target of Coach Searls’ colorful metaphors?
What about Aron White? Does NeDarris look like he’s going to be ready, and if he’s not, will White be a for sure TE to back up Watson?
Who are you seeing becoming the true leader of this defense? Is it more Kelin Johnson or Brandon Miller? Who are the younger guys looking to for senior leadership? What about on offense? I know that Stafford has stepped into the leadership role nicely, but do you see Velasco stepping up as a leadership presence?
Chip, I have to agree with Coach Van that it’s the teams with good leaders and good chemistry that achieve the special seasons. How are you gauging the team’s leaders and chemistry?

Attempted answers to some of your queries:
sobedawg — Stafford was bragging on the LBs the other day. Said they’re a bunch of freaks because they’re all so big and so fast;
Buck in NW — Havercamp’s starting. Nuff said;
Mike — I’m doing an update on the o-line that’ll be up later today. But, in a word, just “OK.” Oh, and TB looks great;
Scooter11 and Airforceflyer — Unfortunately for the Dogs, it’s 100 in Oklahoma and 100 in South Carolina. Hot’s hot;
TiftDevils — Troupe looks great. Could play STs;
Palmetto State Dawg, Dawg4Life — Brandon Miller looks good and is obviously gaining some confidence. Dominated in 3-on-3 drills today. As for Weston, he’s still behind Geno Atkins, so …
Dave in Tampa — Moreno will be heard from this season. O-line play is the million-dollar question.
More to come… .

Ah, Chip, you’re the guy who blamed Athens PD for doing their job, rather than Richt for recruiting less athletes with less than stellar community values. Now you think that as long as the temp peaks at 103 before late afternoon it’s ok to send those kids back out on the field. Hey, 100 is cool, right. So, maybe we lose a couple to the heat; we’ve got more than enough to spare. Huh? Get a life, Chip. Football is NOT life.

Ah spike and and animaldr, you sound like guys with hair on your palms. Do you have kids, or do you just don’t care if other people’s kids are put in danger? For your info, the football pgm here is part of a public university supported by tax dollars, not a semipro farm team. As such, we are responsible for the welfare of these kids - AND MANY OF THEM ARE KIDS. They’re supposed to be students first, athletes second. We also have more respect for our female students then some of you folks seem to have. Want to see T and A? Go to a strip joint, not a football game.

Chip, one thing I would like you to ask coach Bobo is whether Georgia wil reemphasize the run this year.
Everybody wants to focus on the passing game, and it does appear we have reason to be more optimistic than ever in that regard this year. But the statistics last year were eye popping with respect to the running game.
Last year the games Georgia lost we ran the ball 50% of the time. The games we won we ran the ball 60% of the time. The last 3 games - our best performances of the year in my view - we ran the ball 62% of the time.
We had a bad game plan against Kentucky. They have a poor run defense and the run was working, but we abandoned it. That was true against Tennessee as well.
Are the coaches aware of those stats? The only team that really stopped the run against us was Florida, and they had about the best run defense in the country.

reality check, I don’t put a lot of faith in those numbers because they’re scewed(sp) IMO. Reason being is that our receivers dropped so many that I don’t think the numbers make sense. I’m not saying “don’t run the ball” because we will and my GUESS is about 55% of the time, maybe a little more but it’s hard to get a read on the passing game with Stafford playing his freshman year and all of the drops.

Quit whining caredog. Those “kids” are superbly conditioned athletes who are there because they want to be. They understand what it takes to win.
When I was their age I was in the Marine Corps and I can assure you we got into it in weather a lot hotter than this, and that is true to this day too.
If you want to cope with the heat, stay in the air conditioning.

No, to Stew Mandel at SI.com, it doesn’t matter if over the last ten years you have the fourth best winning percentage in all of college football (better than Florida’s, better than USC’s, better than FSU’s). All that matters to Stew Mandel over at SI.com is a team’s “Q Rating.”
Performance on the field doesn’t matter to Stew Mandel. And that is why he is a joke.
Basically, his idea of what teams are top-tier in Div 1 has more to do with “Who’s Now” than “Who Wins.”
Stew Mandel is an IDIOT.

Another reason why Mark Richt is a pretty cool coach to play for.
With the temperature outside 103 degrees, Georgia players were told they were going to take buses over to the Ramsey Center to practice on the basketball courts there. They did go to Ramsey but, they took a right rather than a left when they went inside the back entrance and ended up instead at the Gabrielson Natatorium and its regulation Olympic diving well.
The Bulldogs have done this before, but what they didn’t expect was what they saw once they got inside. Sitting in a chair atop the 10-meter high dive (that’s 33 feet) was Richt. And he wasn’t there just for show. After jestering and toying with his jeering players, he whipped off his t-shirt, gave a Hulk Hogan flex pose, stepped to the edge of the platform, turned backward, then executed a near-flawless back layout.
The players went crazy and began diving into the pool from different angles and off all the diving boards. Thirty minutes later, they boarded the buses and headed back top reality. An 8:30 p.m. practice awaits them this evening.
“You could say we had a good time,” Richt said. “We’ve been working hard, we haven’t missed a day, haven’t missed a practice and it’s been hot as we all know with record temperatures I kind of ruined it there at the end when I told them we were going to practice tonight. But it will be real light and it should be a lot cooler.”
Richt said he hasn’t executed such a dive in at least three years but used to do it all the time off a bridge growing up back in Boca Raton.
“I’ve been visualizing it for about two days because I knew we were going to do this,” he said. “ Actually I was thinking about sneaking in last night and practicing because I knew there’d be a lot of cameras and people here. But I couldn’t get the time, so I did a lot of praying and positive visualization and it came out pretty good.”

One thing many of you might be overlooking regarding the running game stats and the facts about winning percentages when we run the ball: Often times when we win we already have a lead and just use the running game to run out the clock and get some reps for the back-ups. Just something to consider before we abandon the pass. CHIP: KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK . UGA DOG IN FORT MYERS, FLORIDA

Okay, everyone, THIS is why Chip is such a great beat writer. He gets it, he really gets it. He respects the respectful fans and he respects the team he covers. He is a consumate professional at all times, but you can tell he really, really enjoys his job (even in the midst of 103 degrees and 100% humidity).
I’ve made no bones about the fact that I loathe everything about Carter Strickland. But I finally have a better idea of the kind of guy Carter Strickland is.
I was looking through my extensive DVD collection the other night, and picked an old favorite that I hadn’t seen in awhile. I felt it was appropriate, given the absolute disgrace that happened in the baseball the other night. I pulled out and watched 61()*.
Now, I hate the Yankees with a passion, but this a great baseball movie which stays about 95% true to the real story behind the chase for 61 in 1961 between Maris and Mantle. The guys playing Mantle and Maris (Thomas Jane and Barry Pepper (the sniper from Saving Private Ryan) respectively) are great and the story is great. Unfortunately, the wrap-around story with Mark McGwire has now ben tarnished beyond all recognition. But the movie is still great, showing 100% natural ballplayers (well, Mick was drunk a lot) putting all they had to chase down the ghost of Ruth.
Anyway, in the movie, there are a bunch of beat writers covering the chase, and they focus on two of them, mainly. One is a guy like Chip, very professional, but you can tell he likes the guys he covered. The other guy is a jerk who takes every quote out of context and is always making snide, disrespectful remarks and stories, and you just want to punch him in the face over and over and over again. That is the kind of guy that Carter Strickland is.
He’s a small-minded, petty jerk looking for the negative angle, and doing everything he can to tear down the guys he covers (witness his latest on Caleb King over on rivals.com).
Also, it must be noted, that Chip’s consumate professionalism is a direct correlation to his attending the Grady College of Journalism. I don’t know where Carter went to journalism school (maybe he took correspondence courses from the Univeristy of Phoenix), but he definately does not reflect well on his school.
So thanks, Chip, once again. We’re lucky to have you, especially in the face of the guy that you have to counterbalance. We’d be better off without him, but if we didn’t have you to balance out Strickland, I know I would refuse to ever read the AJC again.

Chip I’m not going to beat this to death but it sounds like Troupe is in the plans for this season. You say there isn’t room for Hill who you say looks like maybe the best athlete on the field.Troupe doesn’t bring anything unique.I can think of half a dozen guys with similar abilities.Hill on the other hand can play a hybrid TE/WR game nobody other than perhaps Durham and maybe one of the TEs can come close to.I think he could be a top safty valve and much more.It just seems to me he would add a dimension that could help open the field for the offense.

Andrew Williams #47 is still playing. He is a beast on kick offs. I think he had over 10 tackles last year and he is always around the ball out there. I think this could translate over to defense. He had that great spring game and then tore his ACL but that has not slowed him down on kickoffs. I wonder if it is because he is not on scholarship? I think he should be given a chance.

godawg/NASCAR, Yeah, Mandel’s an IDIOT for writing that article. If we use his logic, then South Carolina should be a top tier team, b/c Spurrier is known more nationally than CMR. Once again, IDIOT
Caredog.. Seems that the only solution that you would have would be to just not practice at all, which isn’t going to happen. I think we all know about players succumbing to heat stroke in the past and caution should(and I”m sure will) be taken, but let the boys practice. May I suggest www.midol.com?? Good luck with that

Where’s caredog now. The compassionate coach of the Dawgs FOOTBALL team lets them swim inside.
Caredog you’ll have to call the DOT, lawn workers and construction companies now. They’re still out in the heat!
By the way- Chip covers Football/sports for a living. So it may be his life.
Boots- my wife is a vet but does not practice either because she reacts to the chemicals. I called her a “house wife” once but she prefers to be called (politically correct- I guess) a “stay at home vet”.
Chip- this is the best preseason coverage I have seen.

Nascarfan, lil buddy……..its 23 days till kickoff. Jump off the fire Carter Strickland train and join us here in happy town. You seem very well versed in many different areas. I sort of guess you are not quite at the stage with bills, and mortgages, and added responsibilities yet? Enjoy those days. Why soak in bad carma? Its 23 days brother! Focus! And for all of us who do have those anchors, its not real cool to see you try to mess with another mans job. If you dont like the job he does, thats perfectly fine. I certainly have not appreciated a few of his comments either. However, for all you know he is doing exactly what his editor asks of him.

No caredog, I don’t run on hot asphalt in bare feet. What a stupid thing for you to suggest.
Certainly it is sad when someone dies and of course I have compassion for the 30 who lost loved ones to heat stroke.
Maybe you haven’t heard, but there is an epidemic in obesity in this country that is killing hundreds of thousands of people a year. Do you think their survivors are sad when that happens? Exercising vigorously in heat requires some precautions, but I’ve done it all my life, will continue to do it and will live better and longer for it.
Stay in your air conditioned environment and have a bon bon.

This SI- mandel article is very intersting but very flawed.
He uses the most recognized symbol for each program but does not do the same for UGA. The best example would be to take Uga (along with Joe Pa) to the room with 100 montana fans. Now I’ll make you a bet that a bunch of the Montana fans don’t listen to his questions because they are down on the floor taking pictures with an obscure “dawg” that was named college football’s most recognizable NATIONAL mascot by Mandel’s magazine.
Now dawg fan that I am- there is still a pecking order in college football. But first you must not over rate the recent past. Then you will see 2 programs that historically overshadow the rest. But only two. They are Notre Dame and Alabama.
But who care’s- GO DAWGS!

Caredog,…..Reality,Animal, Alt,Cuz, Spanky, NAS, I too was at Quantico(OCS in ‘83)and we did everything but march in formation on black flag days(over 100deg) Like my prior brothers have said, if you are conditioned and are smart(meaning you keep yourself hydrated)then this heat only makes you hot. It doesn’t give you heat exhaustion. Caredog, I’ve practiced football in this heat, in the deep south, in high school and college. Some of the deaths you’ve mentioned have probably been high shool guys, or college guys that might not have been evaluated properly. While being extremely unfortunate to the families, the guys that lost their lives in practice……I’m guessing that they loved FOOTBALL! And I don’t think the good Lord woul’ve took them if it wasn’t their time. This is life dude. In addition to being a Marine, I was also a police officer for 11 years. Every morning when I woke up, I wondered if I was going to see my family that evening….but it didn’t stop me from doing what I knew I had to do. I had a passion for the job, just like players have a passion for the field. The NCAA has so many rules for summer practice, it’s a fluke when someone dies on the practice field. Your concerns are duly noted, but if we went with your theory, we wouldn’t have a military or a police force. Is that what you want?

I just submitted a response to the Mandel article. Her it is, as I do not know if it will make the cut on their site:
Oh man… where is a bulldog to begin? First, let me tell you why Georgia fans do not cry like babies to replace Mark Richt. He is man of integrity, and we know it. We know that something is building in Athens, and anyone with a brain knows it. We know that our time is coming. Jim Donnan won just as many games ( bowl games every year) and he is long gone… think about it. To assert that Georgia fans are OK with mediocrity is an obvious inflamatory swipe at a group that you smugly take satisfaction in belittling. Your argument is predicated on the assumption that people in Montana think Peyton Manning and say ” oooh pretty!” Ok, if we have to get the stupid vote to be in your little club, would they recognize our mascot UGA, or perhaps Herschel Walker? I am so disappointed. I like you Stewart, but you have lost your mind. Your article exemplifies everything that is wrong about the system. I am sure that such ridiculous classifications similar to those that you make influence the opportunities available for good teams who do not earn the rank of kings in your little world. That is why Louisville is fighting an uphill battle. I know that people nationally adhere to such stupidity in their perception of teams from other regions, but I expect more from you. Put the glass pipe down man. Penn State and Tennessee? Based on history, I assume? As a loyal Georgia fan it pains me to say this, but Georgia Tech has an infinitely richer football tradition and history than either of those schools. Check the bowl records and the national championships. I can see that Georgia has no right to claim any dominance and it absolutely kills us, but we maintain faith and we bide our time. With Mark richt, we know that we are very close to something special. What was Florida before Spurrier? How will people view Georgia after Richt?
By joe

Hey Uncle D, wake up and smell the stench coming from your pits…Yes, Penn St and Tennessee are further ahead of good old UGA, because if you look at say, I don’t know, the last 50 years, those two schools year in and year out win 8,9, 10, 11, 12 sometimes 13 games a year as UT did when they won it all in ‘98. Sure, they’ll slip up and have one down year every so often as most teams do. However, pretty much the entire decade of the 90’s was way down for UGA. That is why Stewart and most sensible college football fans won’t rank UGA as a “king.” Richt appears to have you back on the right track, but don’t go patting yourself on the shorts just yet. Let’s see what he can do with a team this year that has many many holes to fill, esp. in the O-line and back 7. And to say Ga Tech has more tradition than Penn St and TN just shows how much you don’t know about college football. Woof…

Joe: Stench from my pits? Wow, clever retort. You must have worked for hours thinking of that one. In case your little mind did not get it, I do not think UGA belongs in any classification as an upper eschelon team yet.We still suffer from a Ray Goff hangover.. but our time is coming… Fulmer’s and JoPa’s has passed. However, let me say that I have enormous respect for Tennessee and Penn State. I also think that Fulmer might make another run… My anger is over the media driven stupidity that prejudices perception of college football and the power that it wields over bowl game opportunities at the end of the year. You are a poster child for such a point of view. Congratulations! Keep posting. You only skewer yourself on your own inability to express a coherant point of view…. this blog deserves better. Next time at least bring some game… Or better yet, go to a Vol blog.

As a fellow journalist I’d be interested in Chip weighing in on Stewart Mandel’s mult-tier college program stature.
As a Dawg fan it hurts to be placed in the Baron category. However, objectively speaking I think Mandel is accurate and correct. Mandel’s position is primarily based on country-wide perceptions and awareness. People in Montana are going to have a lot more awareness of programs like Notre Dame, Michigan, USC and Penn State than they are of UGA - that’s just a fact.
Richt and Damon Evans have an opportunity to make a positive impact on this awareness gap. Coaching longevity, consistent success and national exposure based on an out of conference schedule that includes opponents outside of the Southeast will go a long way to placing UGA in elite program status and nationwide recognition. Just because we here in the DawgNation are rapid about our program doesn’t mean that people in East Bumble Idaho have any clue as to the goings on in Athens Georgia.
Trust me, UGA will get there… success breads exposure and exposure is the only criteria separating us from the King tier.

Attempted answers to some queries:
UGAisGreat — I accidentally left off he injuries to Chester Adams (ankle) and Brandon Wood (back). Richt indicated neither was serious. However, Wood was really hurting after the morning practice and walked like an 85-year-old man to the training room. But I’m sure Courson will get him fixed up… . And, no, Thomas Flowers is not starting ahead of Asher Allen. Richt said yesterday they are not making any depth chart moves at this point but are merely working a lot of people in with the first and second teams. So Flowers COULD move ahead but nothing’s in stone just yet… .
A-ville — You’re right that Troupe has been very impressive. But I still believe, and this is mainly my opinion, that his contributions will come on special teams. He’s not likely to unseat the nine people ahead of him on the depth chart… .
Samoan — Cheese is doing fine. He’s their best lineman. And I would say absolutely not on Vince Vance at right tackle. Vance is having a hard time right now. Maybe eventually, but not before the first game… . And I talked to Cheese yesterday and he was really bragging on Clint Boling. Boling is easily the biggest surprise of camp so far… .
D.Ellis and others — First you need to get his name right. It’s KRIS Durham. And Kris is doing fine. He’ll be in the WR rotation and play a lot. Good inside possession receiver. But that’s where they plan to make some hay with Massaquoi this season… .
LowCountry — Marcus Howard, if he’s able to do what he’s been doing in camp and spring, will be one of the big surprises in the league this year. He’s undersized but REAL quick. He’ll get to the quarterback once or twice for sure… .
Spanky — Benjamin Boyd is one of those priceless walk-on contributors. He played in every game last season on special teams and is an scholar acaddemically. He’ll get a few snaps at linebacker as well but Georgia won’t be depending on him. He’s a junior and may well earn a scholly before it’s over.

i have noticed that there are many veterans on this blog so i have a request of you. i lost a good friend a few days ago,a decorated vietnam vet[special forces]who took his own life. i would hope any of you that are having problems will get some help and not let things go too far. if you are not too busy at around 5[1700 for you vets]lift a glass and offer a toast to “absent friends”. also say a prayer for my friend and his family. i am sorry if i brought anyone down, but some thigs are more important than football.

Richt is just a regular ole Greg Lugayness isn’t he?! I heard the Urban tried the same dive last week, but couldn’t get rotated due to the weight of his National Championship ring.
Cuz - what’s going on? Haven’t heard from you in awhile. Hope all is well in the CSRA!

The most important part of being a FOC is your undying support for Chan.
I love that guy. I also miss Reggie Ball already. I guess we will hear all this new guy stuff this year when we play them. But one thing that has not changed and got locked up for more years is my hero Chan Gailey.
Here’s to 7 in a row!

They just do have fun, don’t they. si.com has a great article about the Reptiles. No problem with that because they won it all in ‘06; however, they start talking about Tebow. What has the writer fascinated is the fact that Tebow isn’t like the rest of the players. He doesn’t walk across the field they have a golf cart so he can ride. I’m not making this up just go to si.com and read.

thanks for your thoughts and prayers guys, some of us are going to our favorite watering hole where our friend would show up about five every day and have a drink in his honor,if possible lift a glass whereever you are and join us. now back to football, chip,i asked about logan gray, how is he doing? has he recovered from mono well enough to take part in drills? if so,is he at qb and how does he look? he seems to be a heck of an athlete. i am glad to hear boling is doing well. we should be having a real battle at wideout, with bailey back and troupe, wilson, and henderson in the mix. i read the si article, who cares what 100 people in montana think. i am not sure there are 100 people in montana anyway, maybe they were including sheep. a new state motto, montana, where the men are men,and the sheep are scared!

With respect to the Stewart Mandel thing two things struck me:
1) If you look at the “Kings” and then the “Barons” I think you’d have to say that we’d be the next to go in. So it was kinda frustrating being on the cusp as it were.
2) I would have felt a lot better about it if Tennessee hadn’t been “astrerisked” in. Sure they had a good run in the late-90’s but were second fiddle to UF the entire time. Their 1980’s were as bad as Georgia’s 1990’s. Hell we beat ‘em 44-0 in 1982 and I don’t know that such a whooping has been put on us like that in the last 30 years. We were more dominant from 1980-1983 than they have been since and we’ve been more consistent since 1997 than they have. I guess my point is that either we both move up or we both stay at the 2nd tier. I’m not saying that we’re MORE deserving, but certainly we are AS deserving.
I do think that once we get that ring again (soon I hope) that we are very close to clearly being first tier. Very few teams have won more games than us over the last 10 years and it just looks like its going to get better.

Chip, do you see Weston winning his spot back, or is he locked up in a back-up role? Oh, and I think the team would have REALLY been fired up if you had thrown Carter’s butt off the 30m platform in to the pool.
Cuz & Animaldr, we need to plan a tailgate party for all the bloggers. My son & daughter are up there in school on scholarships (thank the Lord), but at times I feel like just selling my business and moving up to Athens for good. I could host it at my house!!
Go Dawgs!

Preciate the UPdates Chip. Glad the Dawgs are excited this year.
I get the feeling the spirit is upbeat and the coaching is superb and the talent is really good.

yellowblood,
I’ll answer Jim Rome’s question for you: When has anyone been refused admission to an SEC School?
In the last couple of years, there have been multiple examples at UGA. Michael Grant was denied admission for getting suspended in hs, alledgedly, for having consentual sex on school grounds with a girl his age.
Chaney was denied admission because of suspicion on his SAT score, after his score went up a lot.
Both would have been accepted to tech in a heartbeat, if they had decided to go there.

How is freshman Vance Cuff performing so far. He was a superb athlete and student at Colquitt Co High School in Moultrie GA. I think he is going to be a great edition to the bulldogs. He has superior speed and agility. I hope he gets an opportunity to showcase his talents.
