UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Get your inside info here

Let me first say thanks to all of you who are coming here in ever-increasing numbers to get your Georgia football information and to discuss everything Bulldog. Your participation on this blog is what is going to make it successful and I’ve been very impressed with the insight and knowledge so many of you display and, clearly, your thirst for information is insatiable.

As you all know, this is a free service we provide and, like everything in a democratic society we’re so fortunate to live in, it is driven by your right to free speech. That said, I want to inject some personal requests here.

My philosophy with regard to this blog is to provide a little deeper level of coverage for what I believe is the most ardent and passionate of our Georgia readers. That’s why I’m trying to provide daily practice updates. That’s why I try to tell you the stories behind the stories. I want to give you a little more than you’re going to get in the paper or within our regular coverage boundaries. At the very least, I want to give you information first and unfiltered before it shows up in the next day’s notebook.

What I don’t view this blog as is a fan forum or a vent where Florida fans and Georgia Tech fans come to “flame” or talk trash the Bulldog fans they know that visit here regularly. That doesn’t mean I want to limit it to Georgia fans only. Far from it. I’m not into censorship in any form, unless someone is being distasteful or racist. I encourage Florida, Tech and Tennessee fans — like General Neyland — to engage in thoughtful and sometimes playful banter regarding Georgia and its opponents from your respective viewpoints. The more polar viewpoints, the better, I believe.

But I get really tired of reading comment after comment of guys (and girls) talking trash which essentially comes down to “we’re better than you; nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah.” Childish, immature and completely boring, in my opinion. If your handle is, say, “UFownsUGA” or “gatorthedogcatcher,” we get where you’re coming from already. Please try to make your points without being juvenile.

That said, I’m glad a lot of people are showing up and participating and I’m not going to ban anyone based on that kind of behavior. I just want to encourage thoughtful exchanges. Cool?

OK, practice update coming shortly. And here’s what we’ve got coming: Carter Strickland did a nice piece on linebacker Brandon Miller, “the whole key to the defense,” in CMR’s own words. I’ll be filing some practice notes later and we have some really good stories coming all through the weekend.

Thanks again for hanging out and play nice!

any talk around town about beamer’s comments? i think its ridiculous and even if so, what a smart move to hold an open practice!! just wondering if the team or coaches have commented.

is thomas brown making his cuts the past few days? how does he look? does mikey henderson look like he will be a 1 or 2 on the depth chart as SE? thanks for all of these updates.

Well put Chip and long overdue. As soon as the pads go on, let me know how Moreno’s blocking appears to be coming along. That is definitely one of CMR’s pet peeves. If you can’t pick up the blitz, then you’re not gonna be in the backfield much. I’m curious to know how he is progressing on that front…thanks for an excellen t blog!

Chip,

It has been said or implied that Jeff Owens and Chris Little are way out of shape. Is this a true assessment? Are there any other guys in obviously poor condition, and if so, who?

In contrast CMR has said the team as a whole is in excellent condition.

What’s the scoop?

Just in from the practice field. Another scorcher out there. Today’s observations:

One clear theme was developing out there today. The coaches are starting to get a little testy at this point. I observed four different meltdowns by coaches directed at players not doing what they were supposed to be doing. Even Coach Richt was getting a little aggravated as he personally oversaw a drill on the center-quarterback exchange. He’s looking for a certain sounding pop which indicates the ball has been delivered perfectly. It’s now Day 5 of preseason camp and it’s evident the Bulldogs want to be done with teaching and installation and move on to determining who can play and figuring out what they have to do to beat Oklahoma State… .

Heard a couple facts of interest from Coach Van today. DT Jeff Owens benched 540 this summer and Bryan Evans ran a 4.26-second 40, fastest on the team… .

Speaking of Evans, he was getting around pretty good today. Was working on the sidelines on backpedaling and other footwork. I predict a return of not much more than a week from his hammy injury… .

To watch Georgia D-line coach Rodney Garner at work is to observe a master. He’s always been well known as a recruiter and organizer and as an eventual head coach candidate but I’m not sure he gets enough credit for his on-field teaching abilities of defensive linemen. Just look at the parade of guys he’s put in the NFL. And it looks to me like there may be a few more in the works.

That’s all for now. I’ll try to add some more info as it comes available.

Until then… .

General Neyland has truly hit the big time now. The others mentioned too, but for different reasons.

For what it is worth, I am convinced that the GTDC in here this year is not the same person as a year ago. there.

Answers to some of your queries:

animaldr — Not only is Owens not in bad shape but he reportedly is stronger than ever. He’s big time. I can’t say that Little has been very impressive so far but he has a surgically repaired wrist which may have affected his conditioning. He’s still in a green jersey.

A-ville Ranger — As Matthew Stafford told me in a recent conversation, “Dewberry is a freak.” This was a compliment directed at his unusual combination of size, speed and strength. Stafford claims Dew is a 4.5 guy. He’s 6-3, 230 and apparently impressing at practice.

2N4YEARS — Actually the WRs number 13 on scholly. I failed to recognize Aron White as a wideout in my story the other day. My opinion is the Dogs ought to be able to fine 5 or 6 really good ones out of this bunch.

GINBLOSSOM — I have it on good authority Georgia WILL field a team this season and will show up for Okie State and all the other games. The number of suspensions to me indicates there IS discipline in the program, not a lack of it.

Evans ran that IN FRONT of NFL scouts earlier this summer. Hopefully that provided some confidence for the kid. He needed it last year.

Jeff Owens will be a first rounder by the time he leaves.

Thanks for the updates, Chip. these are crucial!

Big Dawg:

One of the unfortunate victims of the NCAA’s latest Big Brother tendencies is strength coaches can no longer routinely share their data on their players. That is something Coach Van adamantly speaks out against because he said Georgia’s players work so hard in the offseason they deserve some recognition. But the NCAA passed legislation in recent years that prevents across-the-board release of times and weightlifting info. We’re able to glean some stuff from time-to-time from conversations with Coach Van but he can’t just hand us info carte blanche anymore. Not all schools (a certain one a lot of these coaches used to be a part of being a primary) are adhering to this new rule.

Up here in b-ball country, these folks think they have a legit football team now. I still believe we have a better coach and better players and that with Brandon Couto, the game with UK would have been won.

That being said, UK appears to be loaded offensively and have some questions on defense. Do you see enough depth at DL and LB to make a difference ? Is the talent level at LB better but with less experience ?

Good job Chip. Thanks for the information. You’re definitely feeding my need for a daily UGA Football fix!!

One question: What has been your observation of Searels? He’s the one person on the coaching staff that we really don’t know much about. Richt has said that he came in and changed some things around, but what’s his demeanor like. I’ve seen pics of him walking around in a sweatshirt at practices. And I’ve heard rumors that he’s quite the yeller. Was he one of the coaches that had a meltdown? Is he as much of a stickler for technique and fundamentals as has been reported?

Thanks! Go Dawgs!!

Chip, I just heard Josh Kendall of the Telegraph, pushing his central Ga. boy mims(?) for the punting job. How does the battle between Butler and mims appear to be shaking out so far?Kendall said that the coach had rather have a 40 yd. average punter who didn’t hit a 20 yarder or 2 during the season as oppose to a kicker that averaged 45 and had a couple of 20 yarders…….Big Dawg, thanks, it does appear that way.

My observations on Searels are that he’s very intense, very hands on, very, er, vocal, and probably pretty good at what he does. Good inside reports from people in the program… . Chip,

Can you please make it an extra special point to give us an update on what we all think are the biggest weaknesses on the team and how they are improving or not improving. Of course, I’m sure we all have different ideas of what the weakest area is, but we can all agree that LBs, o-line, d-line, and the wideouts are our biggest areas of concern. I am most concerned with the LBs and wideouts. I think the o-line and d-line are going to surprise those idiot “experts” like the ones at ESPN, but I don’t know about the LBs and the wideouts. I mean, last year we were talking about the wideouts needing to step up, and everyone said they had good spring and fall practices, only to fall apart in games. I know I’m not alone when I say I’m beginning to become a little suspicious that it has more to do with a lack of good coaching as opposed to the players. Coach Richt is always saying that these players need to play better, but come on, for 6 straight years it’s all the players fault? For 6 straight years, we’ve had all-world talent and they never come in and produce like they should? I’m trying to take a realist’s point of view here, Chip. When it comes to the wideouts, who is the common denominator? Coach Eason. It’s kind of like when the Braves were making the playoffs but kept on choking every single year in the playoffs. Who was the common denominator? Bobby Cox. After awhile, blaming the players for not playing hard enough just doesn’t cut it anymore, and you HAVE to look at the coaching. As for the LBs, I’m not worried about the coaching there, just the inexperience of the players. Even though Miller is there, he’s done nothing to really stand out from the pack his time here at Georgia. What do you see from Miller? Is he becoming a leader in the defense in the regretable absence of Paul Oliver? Is he becoming a guy that the other guys can all rally around, and whom they really believe in as a leader on the field? What are you seeing out of Miller?

Thanks, Chip.

Great to hear from geechee, who was right about staying away too long. I’ve never blogged much, but I enjoyed reading his posts before he dropped off the face of the earth. Hope you’re doing well geech, wherever you’ve been.

Looks like those cameras we installed at Tech’s practice fields are really paying off! That must be where LSU tuned up for the SECCG in 2005 before we crushed their BCS Bowl hopes.

Seriously, I must admit I was extremely disappointed with Frank Beamer’s unprofessionalism. He is the last person I thought would throw around such blind accusations to an equally respected coach. If he isn’t embarrassed by now, he surely will be soon.

How can he explain the first half of that game when it appeared they knew everything we were going to do on offense and defense? Or maybe Richt wanted to spot them (VT) a three TD advantage at the half so it wouldn’t look so obvious. I believe he (Frank) is still sore about his top-ranked defense getting outplayed by a better squad. After all, coaches are evaluated by their ability to make adjustments at the half, especially when facing adversity.

Chip, I just love the way you are interacting with the fans, answering most of our questions, all while putting the lowlifes in their place. Keep up the good work, and GO DAWGS!!!!

Nurse Cratchett, God Bless Her Sweet Soul, drove me to start this noble movement, but now that I have been forced to pursue a living in the BADLANDS (Tennessee) and no longer live in my beloved Five Points, it is difficult to preside at every home game.

Look forward to ya’ll’s eager response and RSVPs. God Bless the Georgia Bulldogs! WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

Thanks Chip, for the forum. btw:You’re invited too. It’d make a hell’va human interest piece and probably get you a BIG Raise, a Pulitzer, or fired….LOL

BBTW: I wrote so much, I feel like #39….geech, we’ll explain that comment later…..good to have you back………………………

I too, was wondering about Jeff Owens condition. Last season, he seemed out of shape. Not as quick as he was in his freshmen year. But I’m glad to hear that he’s stronger and in good shape.

Kade Weston has so much potential to go on to the next level, but the word is, he’s getting pushed Geno Atkins. Will Geno surpass Kade on first team? I like Kade, but I heard he needs to improve on fundamentals.

Chip, I like to hear more about the back-ups… Tripp Taylor, Corvey Irvin, Brandon Wood & Ricardo Crawford. I’m guessing right now, Brandon/Ricardo are 3rd strings.

Chip,

I appreciate that you want to keep this a pure UGA blog and not have the flames and zings. I suggest that you ask your UGA bloggers to allow the same courtesy. I can’t believe that we still have UGA visitors the the Tech version of this blog that still have the nerve to make comments with regard to “tickle piles” after the pics that just surfaced on the internet of UGA’s two quarterbacks spooning each other in a druken stooper. I have tremendous respect for CMR and imagine that he was less than pleased to have those pictures surface…let me rephrase that…to have had his star QB showing such obvious lack of judgement.

MisterT,

My brother attended Northwestern film school and is now a Hollywood producer (you’d more than likely recognize his name), Mister T spoke to his class back in the ‘80’s and he yelled out, “Who likes Mister T?” Mister T quickly responded, “Everybody fool.”

Funny.

BTW: They’re KIDS having fun at a race. I’d like to see some pics of some stuff YOU did…OH…You’re probably a NATS grad… BORRRINNNG!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn’t realize that the NCAA had problems with posting players bench press numbers. If you told us that already, I apologize for missing it.

That is a shame, I;ll back off asking for it.

godawg, you left me out.

of course, i quit blogging in here too.

I heard to watch out for T. Brown getting his starting position back. T. Brown had a bad year last year in the begining but was poised to have a big second half. The kid is special.

Can’t wait to hear about 2 a days! and how TBrown looked.

Buck, you head up the western conference of the FOC.

Techie’s, once we started the FANS OF CHAN, I laid off your blogs. To much responsibility with my FOC duties.

We also left off Wareagle who is probably recoviring right now. General Neyland I believe has an invite to join our order.

Our last board meeting was a blast and if we have it at the same spot, Shockem will be about 100 feet away.

More on the LB hot seat this year ought to be Jancek. When the opposing RB’s did have a field day on us the past two seasons, and there have been plenty of occasions, our LB’s were out of position and extremely slow to react…coaching.

You know what made it worse? When it became free. I paid my $30 bucks a year to be able to login and blog about UGA and enjoyed all of those guys. Now being free you have a bunch of immature grown adults. Hey, if it improves our quality again I’ll pay.

Maybe you should suggest that your bloggers stop stirring up trouble in the GT blog so that is doesn’t follow them back here?

godawg, I am not sure I am on the official roster. I beleive somebody suggested an induction a few months ago, but I don’t know if that was ever voted on. I am however an original member of the Bill King Ayatollahs, (I’d like to beleive the inspiration) so maybe I can leverage that into official membership into your prestigious club. Or is it a gang?

Has anybody ever noticed that Fred Thompson bears a strong resemblance to what CFP may look like in 20 years, or after the coming season..? As for being mentioned as a candidate for a back seat on the board of the FOC, I feel honored. If any of you full time members of the FOC can submit or endorse a presidential candidate for the 2008 election cycle, please do so…I’m at a loss…

RUMOR FROM ATOP ROCKY—-The UT AD was seen at a Home Depot having a set of keys made. The rumor goes on to say this set of newly cut keys are to CPF’s office’s and will be handed over to David Cutcliffe before our opening day conflict out west…just in case the need arises…

The blog is great, and it will be much better if everyone adheres to your suggestion today.

Has anyone read Stewart Mandel’s mailbag re: Georgia’s place in his self-styled class system? I don’t have a problem with ranking Georgia under the likes of USC, Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama, FSU et al in national prominence; however, I do disagree that Georgia’s “G” is not nationally recognizable, and he does not credit the iconic universal recognition of Uga.

What are your thoughts? Is UGA a regional power or a premiere national player?

NASCAR: Don’t you get it by now ? The whole point of playing for GA is that you can be all-world and sit on the bench for 3 years without playing and without getting hurt. All you have to do is play in your senior year and you become an automatic super-healthy NFL selection. Shockley worked it to perfection.

CHIP, can you give more info on the comp. between GENO ATKINS AND KADE WESTON? what’s up with “WESTON”? when he was being recruited, he was considered to be one of the best recruits in the usa. is he playing to his potential? or is “GENO” just a better player overall? also, give us your impressions of “KNOWSHON MORENO”, as to how good of a back he will be this year and in future years. do you think he will hold off “CALEB KING” in next year’s backfield?
